Avis sur The Consulate New York
This place is absolutely magic! Our server Lara was attentive and super helpful with recommendations! I started out with the oui. Mademoiselle which was fruity and refreshing! I also had the broiled half lobster to start and it was incredible I could’ve eaten 10 more! My fiancée had the shrimp cocktail. For our entrees I had the ribeye which was cooked perfectly! He had the steak freeze with the peppercorn sauce on the side, it was so delicious I could’ve taken a bath in it. Seriously! And to end tye night I had the ginger, optional, spicy, strong and delicious. I love the taste of ginger! I will absolutely be back.
Consulate is a hidden gem in Midtown Manhattan, blending the charm of a European bistro with a contemporary New York vibe. The restaurant is perfect for brunch, dinner, or drinks, offering an upscale yet unpretentious atmosphere that feels welcoming and relaxed. The interior is stylish, with a mix of modern and classic design elements. Food is delicious, service is great. Highly recommend it!
This is an amazing restaurant in midtown. The décor inside is great, you have a feeling this is a very classy restaurant with a wonderful ambiance. The service is exceptional the cocktails well made with quality ingredients. I forgot to picture the shrimp cocktail and the dozen oysters which were VERY fresh and were gone in a minute. The Branzino would just perfectly cooked, and the Tomahawk steak that folks in my party had was to die for. They did share a small piece for me to enjoy. Just a real classy establishment, great service and for the quality of food it is very reasonably priced. Can’t wait to be back!
It’s my fourth time coming here and every time everything is perfect. My favorite plates are the short rib pasta and the gnocchi one, but the bone with fig jam appetizer is delicious, their mushroom pasta is phenomenal, and the service is excellent. I would recommend this restaurant 100% and for sure come back many times.
Celebrating my birthday at this French restaurant was undoubtedly an exquisite experience from start to finish. The ambiance alone sets the stage for a memorable dining affair, with its sophisticated charm and inviting atmosphere that elevates any special occasion. The culinary journey began with the artichoke appetizer, a delightful prelude to the culinary delights that awaited. The Wild Mushrooms Truffle Pinza stole the show with its medley of sautéed wild mushrooms, creamy goat cheese, fragrant truffle oil, and fresh chives atop perfectly baked Pinza bread. Each bite was a symphony of flavors that danced on the palate. The French onion soup at this remarkable restaurant is a culinary masterpiece that deserves special recognition. The richness and depth of flavor in every spoonful of this classic dish is truly something to behold. The sweet caramelized onions, savory beef broth, and decadent melted cheese perfectly meld together to create a symphony of flavors that warms both the heart and soul. The presentation of the French onion soup is as exquisite as its taste, with the gooey, golden-brown layer of cheese cascading over the rim of the bowl, inviting you to dive into its comforting embrace. The sight and aroma alone are enough to evoke a sense of nostalgia and anticipation for the culinary delight that awaits. Each spoonful of this soup is a journey through layers of complex and harmonious flavors, with the slight sweetness of the onions balancing beautifully against the savory richness of the broth. The melted cheese adds a luxurious creaminess that ties everything together, creating a truly indulgent and satisfying experience. Moving on to the main courses, the Pesto Reginetti Pasta showcased the simplicity and elegance of classic French cuisine, with al dente pasta coated in a vibrant pesto sauce that celebrated the freshness of the ingredients. And then, the pièce de résistance – the Tomahawk Steak for 2. The 48oz of perfectly cooked steak, accompanied by roasted herb potatoes, chimichurri sauce, and tender broccolini, was a carnivorous delight that left a lasting impression. Complementing these culinary masterpieces were the exquisite cocktails. The "Oui Mademoiselle" cocktail, with its tantalizing blend of vodka, elderflower, blackberry puree, lemon, and sparkling wine, was a true work of art in a glass. Its harmonious mix of flavors and elegant presentation added an extra touch of glamour to the evening. Overall, dining at this French restaurant was a sensory experience like no other. From the impeccable dishes to the outstanding cocktails, every detail was crafted with care and precision. For a birthday celebration or any special occasion, this restaurant promises an unforgettable culinary journey that will linger in your memory long after the last bite has been savored.
Correction... went to the UWS Location: My wife and I had a wonderful experience on Tues. 3/26/2024 (our 13th anniversary). Everyone was pleasant... from the hostess to Petra, our server; and the busmen. We ordered oysters and the wild mushroom Pinza bread with truffles for appetizer, and for our entree filet mignon, and hanger steak (perfect medium temp). The food was incredibly exquisite, and the drinks were also amazing (Kiss of life, and Old Fashion). It was our first visit, but we will be back soon (can't wait :-)
Came here for lunch with my wife, we both loved the restaurant. We really liked the interior decoration, the music and above all the way staff treated us. Our waiter was Renan and he was very helpful and kind. He knew the menu very well and I went with his recommendation, (Prix Fixe Lunch Menu 3 Course) Crab Cake as the appetizer, Consulate Burger as the main meal and Bread Pudding for dessert. The Crab Cake was delicious. And I highly recommend the Consulate Burger. My wife and I loved the Bread Pudding with Vanilla Ice Cream. We are definitely coming back next time we find ourselves in NYC.
We had a lovely family dinner, and everything was wonderful. The food was delicious, with great flavors and generous portions. Marvin was an excellent host—very attentive, helpful, and guided us perfectly with both drinks and food. His warm hospitality made the evening even more enjoyable…
Wonderful experience. I love the live music the cocktails and the customer service. Our server Sebastian was very attentive as well. And most importantly there’s foie gras on the menu.
Our 5th time enjoying dinner at The Consulate Midtown in NYC over the past year. Traveling in from Arizona, this past week we were fortunate enough to have Juan as our server twice. Outstanding customer service, Juan was so friendly and delight to have as our server. Great job!!!!! Food as always, was incredible. This is a must stop for dinner for business or family. Such a memorable and wonderful experience.
The meal and dessert were delicious! This is the first time in the U.S. that a waiter has asked me how I wanted my duck breast with foie gras cooked. As a French expatriate from the southwest of France, where duck breast and foie gras are a specialty, it gave me high hopes—and it was absolutely delicious! My cocktail was also full of flavors and not too strong in alcohol. I highly recommend this restaurant!
Our server Cesar was attentive and kept the courses and beverages flowing in a smooth and timely manner. The food was exquisite (get the bone marrow! It is worth it even if you are not an adventurous eater! Spread it like butter across the bread!) and the atmosphere was perfect for an intimate date.
I was brought to the consulate for my birthday and I had a great time! Went with recommendations made by our waiter Juan and the options did not disappoint. From the drinks, apps to the main course, enjoyed everything. The atmosphere was great and relaxing, just what I was looking for on a Monday to kick off birthday week!
Loved the two-story restaurant!! Looking from outside , it had class. Decided to check it out after hearing about it’s opening in Midtown. We had sat upstairs , beautiful dining room. We ordered few appetizers like Shrimp Toast and Grilled Octopus, both were great. Decided to go with the Tomahawk for 2 , asked for Medium felt like it was Medium Rare but no issues we enjoyed it. Espressos Martinis were flowing in the system so it was a great night. Ambiance - 10/10 Service - 10/10 Very Knowledgeable Parking - Street Reservation Needed , I am guessing walk-ins welcomed as well
Great place for dinner before a show at City Center or The Manhattan Theater Club. Beautiful setting, impeccably attentive service, and each delicious dish is artfully presented. Loved the bone marrow appetizer and the roasted branzino with crispy skin over a cilantro sauce. Shaved fennel on top is a perfect finishing touch!
We had such a wonderful experience at this restaurant in New York! The food was absolutely amazing – fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. Every dish we tried was delicious. The service was just as impressive. A special thank you to Juan, who made us feel so welcome and taken care of throughout the evening. We were celebrating my husband’s birthday, and the staff went above and beyond to make the night extra special for us. Their kindness and attention to detail really made the celebration memorable. Highly recommend this spot for anyone looking for fantastic food and outstanding service. We can’t wait to come back!
Went here for my Mom's birthday. Everything is amazing the moment you come in. Everyone in the staff was nice, accommodating and attentive and we had Javier especially help us throughout the night. Since we came on a Thursday night, there was a live jazz band playing which makes it feel extra magical. Food was tasty and well prepared, we had the escargot and grilled octopus for appetizers. My mom got the special which was a scallop dish and I got the short rib cavatelli and we ended with a burnt cheesecake for dessert. For drink I got the "Oui Mademoiselle" which I recommend. The serving felt more than enough because we were already feeling full by appetizers. Overall, one of the best places I tried in New York especially after the pandemic. Definitely recommended and will come back (especially on a Thursday night or perhaps a Saturday brunch for the jazz)
Took the wife here for Valentine's Day, and we're BOTH glad I did. Not a huge fan of pre-fix menus, but I'll definitely make an exception for this restaurant. The place has two levels and a grand balcony staircase, which we got seated alongside. Decor was fancy, but probably not as "stuffy" as you might expect from a French restaurant. You can tell this place is trying to attract more than just the "Old Money" crowd. Service was great. Coming in, the hostess handed my wife a rose. And as always, I appreciate places that take extra care to accommodate my wife's gluten allergy. We got free glasses of sparkling wine. For my app, I ordered the strawberry beet soup. For my main, it was the lobster risotto. For dessert, the crème brûlée. "Strawberry beet soup" sounded so weird, naturally I had to try it. It's served cold and creamy (but not so creamy that I felt full before my main was served). The lobster risotto, well, you know that scene near the end of 'Ratatouille' where Anton Ego takes one bite of his meal and gets instantly transported back to his childhood? Yeah, it was kinda like that. Only it was me and my Nona's risotto. The crème brûlée was the venerable icing on the cake. It was my first time having one. An intriguing combination of flavors, with a thin, candy-like outer layer and a creamy depth. Sweet and delicious! It's not cheap, but this place makes an ideal date night. The food was not only delicious, but perfectly-portioned. As in, by the end of the night, we didn't feel stuffed. Just...satisfied. Which is probably the way Humans ought to eat. But I digress. Would we come back to The Consulate on a non-holiday? Absolutely!
The Consulate completely impressed me! The filet mignon was exceptional, the burrata a must-try, and the ceviche incredibly fresh. The staff was warm and welcoming, and the cozy atmosphere made me feel amazing. Drinks were phenomenal—especially their Espresso Martini. Highly recommended!
Juan was our server and he was fabulous. So attentive and knowledgeable. The other staff were wonderful as well. Food is always great.
We went for the restaurant week dinner for our anniversary and everything we had was really good and the atmosphere was classy modern. My steak was cooked perfectly and my husband really enjoyed the scallop risotto. Cardamon PanaCota was delicious. Cesar J was our server and was very attentive and courteous. Rest of the staff was very pleasant as well - even gave us a little photo souvenir for our anniversary.
We had a wonderful evening and dinner at The Consulate. We chose to go there to celebrate our anniversary. We could not have chosen a better place! The service was outstanding; the food was impeccable and delicious, and the ambience perfect. The meal was superb. We give our evening 5, wholehearted stars. Kudos to the wait staff, bartender, and chef. A well-crafted experience! Thank you for making our anniversary night so nice!
Great experience. Good atmosphere, particularly given it was a Sunday night, busy but not overly so. Excellent service from Juan and Santo - we felt very looked after. Food exceptional as you would expect. Thanks very much - a special birthday meal for my wife (and noted the two couples next to us were also celebrating their birthdays too).
Great dinner experience! Delicious food, extensive menu, nice atmosphere, attentive staff. Would definitely return and highly recommend. Highlights: escargot and bread were amazing, special watermelon, mint, & Gorgonzola salad, delicious duck and truffle fries, and great sundae. Soft, jazzy, sultry music sets a nice ambiance for conversation. Soft, ambient lighting. Ideal for dates and visitors.
Me and my husband booked a table for 13 for a post wedding lunch last October 11, 2024. I have nothing but positive to say for our lunch event. We had a nice and quiet table on the second floor and all our servers were very professional and friendly. They gave us a free champagne and came out with two sparklers for me and my husband. We found this very sweet and got really nice photos out of it! The food was delicious and everyone enjoyed their meal from the starters to mains and desserts! They far outweighed our expectations and we are very content and happy. I have no regrets choosing them for our wedding lunch. The ambience was also perfect even though it was lunch time, the lighting inside made us feel like we were having a nice relaxed dinner which we liked and was exactly the ambience we were looking for. Overall, I highly recommend and want to say thanks to the events team and The Consulate!
The entire experience was phenomenal. The management at the front door was kind and welcoming and seated me in their gorgeous dining room. Kevin was a highly attentive server and treated me like a true VIP. I recommend the bone marrow and filet mignon. Be sure to finish with the luxurious lava cake.
I tried escargot for the first time here and it was absolutely amazing — a great place to start if you’ve never had it before. The ambiance is warm and inviting, and the personalized service really makes you feel comfortable asking questions or trying something new. If you’re unsure what to order, don’t hesitate to ask for recommendations — Flavio knowledgeable and genuinely helpful. I would definitely recommend this spot, especially if you’re looking to explore classic dishes in a relaxed but refined setting.
Darrani was great (i really hope i spelled her name correctly) she was very friendly and very efficient. I have been a fine dining waiter for more than a a decade and this restaurant had impeccable service. From the host, to the speed of being greeted. To the timed courses. The food was impeccable. The french onion soup, lamb tartar and steak frites were all the best we had ever had. Finally the atmosphere was great. Everything was super nice and classy as well as spotless. The value of this place was urging us to return. Kudos to every worker we ran into for clearly working hard and being at the top of their game
My favorite spot for lunch in Midtown! Torianna is a welcoming presence behind the bar, crafting fantastic cocktails, giving great menu recommendations, and adding to the warm atmosphere with her kindness and wit. My favorite dishes are the croque monsieur on Tuesdays, the tuna sandwich on Wednesdays and the avocado and salmon toast on Fridays. In terms of cocktails, the Malalama, Ginger Optional, French 76 and Consulate Old Fashioned are all wonderfully crafted and delicious.
Had an amazing dining experience at The Consulate in Midtown! The ambiance was stylish yet cozy, the service was top-notch, and the food was absolutely delicious. Every dish was beautifully presented and full of flavor—highly recommend the Steak Frites and Short Rib Cavatelli which we were able to order with GF pasta 😍😍😍. Whether you're looking for a great lunch, dinner, or cocktails, this spot does not disappoint. Can’t wait to go back!
Came for birthday and I'm really glad I chose this place to celebrate my birthday. We had a late reservation but we didn't feel rushed. Decor is beautiful, food was delicious, and staff was very attentive and welcoming. We had the Lamb shank speciality dinner, grilled octopus, broccolini, and mushrooms. The drink I had was delicious AND strong. Thank you to our waiter, Kevin.
Had the most amazing time. The vibes and the food alone are terrific. Our server Caesar made it even more special by surprising us with a special treat to help us celebrate our anniversary. This place takes such special kind care of its diners. 10/10 would recommend to anyone on date night or simply looking for good food! Thank you Caesar and the Consulate Team!!
This place has it all! The brunch menu is fantastic, with everything from perfect omelets to indulgent Eggs Benedict. The avocado toast is fresh and satisfying, and the pancakes are fluffy and sweet. For dinner, the burgers are juicy and delicious. It’s a great spot for big groups with a welcoming, easy-going vibe.
Stopped by after an event at the MoMA down the street and was impressed by the cozy, dimly lit, lowkey vibes of the place. Was even more surprised by the delicious quality of the food. Did light bites and drinks but remember the cocktails being nice and strong, the bone marrow being rich and the tuna tartare being layered with flavor including a nice bit of avocado for consistency.
Had a business lunch at The Consulate and loved it. The tuna tartare was beautifully presented and the perfect start to the meal. The service was stellar and the dining room on the second floor was beautifully designed. The tuna sandwich and perfectly cooked fries were equally satisfying. Look forward to having the excuse to come back for happy hour to try more. Loved my time here.
Went to the Consulate to celebrate my wife's birthday with her father. She picked it because of the great reviews. We were not disappointed. Susana greeted us and got it a nice spot in a quiet area so my FIL could hear us with ease. Cesar, our waiter, was charming and made some excellent suggestions. My wife's Mussels were delicious. Both my FIL and myself had the Short ribs. Tender and mouthwatering! Susana was aware of the birthday and Cesar surprised us with a desert with a candle. Great way to finish up a memorable dinner.
This beautiful French restaurant may not have an extensive menu, but it offers more variety than expected with daily specials and seasonal options. Every dish exceeded expectations in taste, the service was friendly, and above all, the atmosphere was wonderful. The only downside was the limited wine selection, but the reasonable pricing made up for it.
Our waiter Marvin is great! He recommended the special dishes for tonight. Lamb tartare & Bone marrow are amazing. I like the fig sauce. Duck breast is good enough given its price(I like the pumpkin puree more). Wagyu burger is average. This place is pretty close to where I work so I would come next time.
Beautiful and comfortable environment. Enjoyed the delicious food, pleasant atmosphere and friendly service. Love the caviar. The vegetables are tasty. My sister and I had a wonderful time dining and chatting. Had fun taking photo by the stair with my sister and owner Miki. Great for families and friends gathering. Love to come back again and again.
My favorite from this restaurant is lamb tartar!!! And ginger cocktail. We also ordered grilled octopus, steak frites and duck - everything was delicious! And our server was the best (I’m not sure if I spell his name right - Bochi), he made sure we had a great experience in the restaurant! Atmosphere in the restaurant was great too!
Happy hour till 630pm. Near our office, so perfect location. 56th St looking good with Whitby hotel, Bread & Butter deli, Dimsum Palace, Korean, ramen. Crowd shuffles in later. So early bird with perks. Ordered much of all... escargot, mushroom & fig pizza, tuna taco, oysters, truffle fries, fish & chips, ceviche... all good but our one pick taco. Alagash, Kronenbourg, IPA beers, happy hour sparkling cava, rose, cocktails spicy mala mala best, old-fashioned good, mocktail pretty... Plating good, tastes good. Kitchen and bars bit tardy at times, but bearable. It's happy hour.
Marvin was an excellent server. The entire staff was wonderful. The food was top notch. We have never had bone marrow with so much marrow inside and it was amazingly delicious. The octopus was divine! The Bronzino was delicious And the short rib was cooked perfection. The absolute best mushrooms I have ever had. It’s a must try.The chocolate crème brûlée did not disappoint, it was decadent The atmosphere was romantic.
We came here to celebrate a birthday. Let me say the hostess was so kind, the server Juan was amazing. Great hospitality and asked if we had any questions about the menu or if our party had any allergies (which a lot of places don’t ask) it was a nice touch on his part. The food and drinks exceptional. The octopus to die for, as well as the Steak frites and the dessert phenomenal. Had a great and amazing time and my friend loved this spot that wants to come back soon.
Yes! Finally, I had a chance to enjoy a proper, generous bone marrow - absolutely delicious! I also tried the ceviche, which was wonderfully fresh and flavorful. I really love the ambience at The Consulate - it feels like stepping back in time into a stylish NYC bistro. The beautiful floor tiles, warm yellowish lighting, and overall vibe make it an ideal spot for a relaxed yet elegant afternoon dinner. A big compliment to the service team as well - attentive, professional, and genuinely welcoming. I’ll definitely be back!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ An Exceptional Dining Experience Our evening at The Consulate Midtown was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment we walked in, we were embraced by a warm, inviting ambiance—cozy lighting, thoughtful decor, and a setting that feels both refined and intimate. Every detail is clearly curated with intention and taste. We enjoyed a beautifully composed array of dishes including escargot, bone marrow, sushi, Brussels sprouts salad, bass, French onion soup, artichoke, French fries, and a perfectly executed burger. Each plate showcased balance, finesse, and vibrant flavor. Everything was rich in taste yet remarkably light, leaving us deeply satisfied without feeling overwhelmed—a rare and wonderful quality. Every bite reflected precision and passion in the kitchen, and the overall experience was one of pure enjoyment. This is a place where cuisine, atmosphere, and service harmonize effortlessly. A truly memorable dining experience—elegant, delicious, and absolutely worthy of five stars. ✨ We will be returning soon.
A memorable French dining experience — the cuisine was fresh and refined, the ambience warm and inviting, and the service outstanding. Juan was an excellent server, attentive and professional, making the evening truly special. The live jazz trio added great atmosphere, though it can get a bit loud if seated nearby.
This restaurant was a real gastronomic delight! From the moment we walked in, the staff was extremely friendly and attentive. We didn't wait long to be served, and the waiter helped us with recommendations from the menu, which meant a lot to us since it was our first time here. The food was incredibly fresh, beautifully served, and rich in flavor. The music and ambiance are perfect for a business dinner, date and celebration. Highly recommend visiting as soon as possible!
I had such a lovely experience here. I came in with my three-month-old puppy in a small carrier, and the staff handled everything with perfect balance — polite, calm, and professional. They didn’t make a big scene about my dog, but they also didn’t make us feel unwelcome. It felt respectful and natural. I truly appreciated that no unnecessary attention was drawn to my puppy. I understand the importance of boundaries and proper behavior in public spaces, and I simply wanted to enjoy a quiet meal. The atmosphere was relaxed, the people were kind, and my puppy didn’t disturb anyone at all. The food was absolutely delicious, the vibe was warm and inviting, and the whole experience felt effortless and comfortable. I’ll definitely be coming back.
Juan was a great server, always keeping my water and wine glass full. The bone marrow stole the show, fantastic in every way, followed closely by the French onion soup- with deep umami. The octopus and maitake were also excellent matched with a perfect drinking St. Emilion. Great service, great food, great wine.
We had a wonderful time here and the food was incredible. The steak was wonderful so juicy and tasty, I would 100% recommend. Our server Juan was wonderful and extremely delightful and made our birthday dinner so much better. He gave us a free slice of tiramisu for a birthday and loved it.
Our new favorite spot... not just in midtown, but one the island of Manhattan. Their Happy hour is a happy hour that's actually worth it. Phenomenal cocktails until 6:30pm during the weekday and each one dripping with quality. I've never had a better cocktail at a $13 pricetag and I've had them coast to coast in some of the finest restaurants, including french restaurants like Le Diplomat in DC and Parq in Philly. Caesar was kind, quick, and eager to serve us during our special celebration. We so appreciated him. Saqueo and Helder were incredible servers as well and treated the table like we were at a 5 star steakhouse. I dropped a steak knife and before I could blinked it was picked up and replaced. Our hostess was also so kind, patient, and connected with our 2 YO daughter. Everything we ate from sushi, to the duck was absolutely top notch quality and presentation. The $11 happy hour escargot was the best I've ever had with a quality of snail that takes on flavor as it should, tender, savory. And the ambiance is truly breathtaking from the moment you enter with the curved staircase to the top floor with the incredible brick and wood covered walls. And I assure you they did not pay me to write this review but I will give another huge recommendation as they are part of the in kind app and you qualify for 20% cash back on your purchase as well as qualify for special discounts. We will be back anytime we visit because they truly set a great standard for a date night in any city.
First and foremost, the best thing about this place is the service. From the moment you come in, they really take care of you. They are amazing and professional! I had the pleasure of being served by Andres, whom I found out afterwards was only in his first day! He was really amazing and is someone with a good and respectful attitude! The food: the food was exquisite. I started off with the French Onion Soup which was super cozy and delicious. The ribeye steak was to die for! The meat was cooked to my liking and was super juicy. I also had The Consulate Pesto which was very green-y and indulging. And finally, capping everything with a Nutella Tiramisu which was a perfect way to end the night! Everything was perfect! Glad I’ve booked this as a Resy Global Dining Member!
We decided go to The Consulate for lunch before going on a walking tour a few blocks away. I've always wanted to try a Croque Madame and The Consulate dit not disappoint! The egg was cooked perfectly, the béchamel sauce was smooth and very tasty, the brioche was buttery and crisp around the edges, the ham front and center/very good and the side salad was dressed just right! I also ordered the French Onion Soup and can honestly say it was the best that I've had from any restaurant EVER. The service from the time we entered the restaurant to leaving was outstanding. The servers were patient, knew the menu top to bottom and were very attentive. The atmpsphere from the lighting to music gave the place a chill vibe and the whole experience was relaxing. A wonderful way to begin our pre-Thanksgiving vacation venture. I highly recommend The Consulate for a great meal. It's worth the calories, so make sure you have room to savor the experience!
We had an amazing time at the Consulate!! We came to celebrate our anniversary and my birthday and we had the best time! The staff was so attentive and helpful and offered us complimentary champagne for the occasion. We ordered the escargot and oysters to start and they were phenomenal. My husband ordered the short rib cavatelli and I ordered the mushroom gnocchi for dinner. Both were exceptional. We didn’t leave any left over! For dessert we ordered the special (I unfortunately don’t remember the name) but it was delicious. It was similar to a large meringue cookie with cream and fruit. They also surprised us with a complimentary crème brûlée for my birthday. We can’t recommend this restaurant enough!! They are fantastic!
We had a nice little lunch here in between visiting the Zoo and the MoMA. My young daughter had an excellent chicken sandwich here which they kindly modified to her preference. I sampled some of it and it was very good. My wife and I each had a French onion soup and their version was the best we have had so far on the entire east coast. Very savory and flavorful, and quite filling as a snack since it was a bit early for us for a proper lunch. Cocktails were excellent, I enjoyed both their take on an Old Fashioned (it included Mezcal) and the Lola. The latter I really enjoyed and while our waiter refused to procure the recipe when asked (boo...), the bartender immediately obliged (yay..). I've made it at home and am thankful for making the visit there if just for this new cocktail addition to my library of favorites. Beautiful decor inside, brimming with the polish and charm of an elegant brasserie without any aloofness. The winding staircase is quite impressive.
The food was wonderful but service was slow considering I was dining solo and it took nearly an hour to get my entree. Also a bit loud. The servers themselves were great.
Met friends here for a pre show dinner. Beautiful setting with a dramatic staircase. We sat upstairs. For the price, the food was fine but certainly not memorable. The bone marrow is not worth it. The French onion soup and Caesar salad were good. The short rib pasta was very rich. Friend ordered the duck special and they accidentally gave her chicken teriyaki. The manager made it right by quickly getting her duck, giving her the chicken to go, and all dessert on the house. The desserts were very good.
We came from CA for our anniversary. Awesome place! Beautify decorated, with great live music. Sabatien was superb for only a waiter for a month?! French onion soup was the best ever but unfortunately the ribeye and chicken dishes were bland. Will definitely be back to try other items.
The Consulate Midtown is a beautiful restaurant and we were greeted with a smile and kind hostess. We were seated at a quiet upstairs table per my reservation request. As far as the service I’m truly torn. Our server was very nice, but seemed she might be new, if not, she should know more about the drinks and menu. Everyone enjoyed their specialty cocktails. I will add that the Tito’s vodka soda w/a splash of cranberry was $24 +$7 for an extra shot — $31! It didn’t even taste like a double. We know drinks are pricey and are fine with it, but seriously? And then it was time for appetizers. I wanted the Tartare Trio (tuna, salmon, crab), but I don’t eat salmon, so requested to switch it for another of the offerings within the trio, to which I was told “we can not do that.” I did not ask to switch the salmon to lobster tail, so this was very off putting and I decided to forego an appetizer all together (they lost $22 and a star on this review for declining that very easy accommodation). The other appetizers a pork rib special and crab cake were all very good. When it came to ordering our entrees we all decided on steak; two filet mignon and two rib-eye. Again I asked to substitute the mashed potatoes for crispy mushrooms (exact same price on the menu) I was told she would have to check with the chef. However, my husband was able to choose any side with his rib-eye, so he ordered the mushrooms and we just swapped. Both of the filets were delicious and the crispy mushrooms were fabulous. Unfortunately, my husband and our friend who ordered the rib-eyes medium rare were given medium. Anyone that orders steak and has to send it back knows it’s a kill joy for the meal, so they both said the flavor was decent and they would just eat them. We were full and decided to pass on dessert, BUT, our server brought out a Creme Brûlée for our friend’s anniversary. That was extremely kind and appreciated. As we were leaving, the same hostess was kind enough to take a few photos of us. Overall our experience was clearly mixed. The problem is in NYC where there’s so many restaurants to choose from, you really have to hit all the marks. So, we’re not sure if we’d go again.
Absolutely great space. Beautiful bar area and gorgeous staircase leading up to the second floor seating which offers privacy should you plan a private party. Great service, attentive and friendly staff. On the food side… getting there. IMO, it lacks finesse both in taste and presentation. What I am about to say, mind you, is all criticism on high-level. For instance, if a cream-based soup is not balanced with acidity you won’t be able to eat more than 3 spoons until your stomach tells you: enough. The celery-apple soup, a long-time favorite in my household, didn’t offer the sweet and tart apple taste it needs to counter the heavy cream. The French onion soup, IMO one of the best ones in midtown, was filled tongue brim the brim and then overflowed when baked. And my goodness, be gentle on the amount of cheese you want to melt.. and then the pasta dish: why add cream to short rib ragout? It makes it look unappealing and is also not necessary for taste. Tasteless good though, but again, the heavy cream will not allow you to eat much. Again, high-level critique and I would return. But a gentle nudge to the chef to keep finessing so the restaurant will earn its place in the most-desired category.
We went to The Consulate Midtown for dinner after seeing so many strong reviews, but the experience didn’t quite live up to the hype for us. Service was the main issue. The host came across as indifferent / borderline rude, which set the tone from the start. During dinner, when our second round of drinks arrived, the server seemed unsure where they belonged~even though the original glasses were still clearly on the table. The food itself was fine. The standout dish was the lamb tartare, which was excellent, and to be fair, everyone’s meat was cooked exactly as requested. Overall, it was an okay meal, but based on our experience, it didn’t quite match the level of praise suggested by the reviews.
I need to start this one with a negative. We ordered appetizers and dinner and our dinner was served while I was still eating my appetizer. This is such an issue for me. I said we were still eating the appetizers and the server just looked at me. Unfortunately this clouds my review because if a restaurant doesn’t think service and the guest experience is important then my opinion of the restaurant falls. We were there at 5:30 pm on a weekday and while the restaurant was busy it was no where close to full. The food was very good and the atmosphere was lovely but unfortunately I can’t get past the poor service. Amuse bouche was very good but thought it should have been served before the appetizer and not with it. Lamb tartare was delicious. Might be my palate but I wasn’t really able to discern lamb vs beef but still a very good tartare. Grilled artichokes were good but could have used a little salt. Kale salad was great, fresh crisp and not overdressed. Burger was also good. Cooked well, juicy snd flavorful. Fries were perfection for me. Crispy and not at all greasy. I feel badly giving the rating of 3 but for me service really matters. I appreciate the owners quick and thoughtful response to my review. Makes me think I will give them another try.
We tried The Consulate because of the high number reviews, but it did not live up to expectations. The biggest disappointment was the food. The oysters tasted like they had been rinsed in tap water - no saltiness or brine, no ocean water. To our waiter’s credit, he took them off the bill. The rest of our dinner was also incredibly under-salted. The escargots, the gnocchi with mushrooms and truffles, even the seasonal duck breast. I’ve never before had to ask for salt in a brasserie. For good seating, you have to go up a long flight of stairs, which was not possible for our 90 year old mother. I think they mean well, but it seemed like they really don’t know how to prepare excellent food. I would not recommend for dinner. Probably a nice spot for drinks and some appetizers - there’s a decent zinc bar type situation on the first floor, and also standing tables in the back.
Things I liked: even on a busy night the restaurant was still quiet with well-sized tables and nice decor. The bar is very cute. Presentation of dishes is nice. People liked the lobster risotto. Things that underwhelmed me: the gnocchi was more generic in flavor It had mostly slightly sautéed button mushrooms and a slight truffle aroma but nothing that carried through into the taste. Service was fine.
Very nice staff, but only average food and high price. Cavetelli which the waiter said was the signature dish was bland. It could have used some spice. The broccolini was most stems. Small portion of expensive mashed potatoes. The $25 lava cake, served with ice cream, was very good. I went because of the I kind app which reduced the price by $60 and the surprisingly high ratings. So if you go I would recommend that.
Let me start first with the 5/5 stars on the service and the specialty drinks. The food on the other hand is uh questionable at best. The salads are what they are just alright, the French onion soup is mediocre at best and last but definitely the least were the steaks. Every steak that came to the table was over cooked, the server did offer to bring the steak back and get us new ones (one person in my party was a bit more vocal then the rest, the rest of us just ate it begrudgingly and held our tongues)but when you are charging 50$+ steaks why are they all coming out over cooked? The back of the house really need to temp their meats much better.
In our attempt to commemorate our inaugural Christmas celebration, we made the decision to dine at Consulate Midtown. Regrettably, the experience fell short of expectations due to subpar service, rather than the quality of the food. We had secured a reservation through Resy and proactively requested a one-hour delay due to unforeseen travel circumstances. Despite providing my full name during the initial call, the reception was marked by rudeness. Upon our arrival, one hostess (presumably a manager) exhibited politeness and professionalism, while the other displayed a displeased demeanor, evident irritation, and unwelcoming attitude. Notably, it was this latter hostess who seated us, and even checking our coats felt like an inconvenience to her. Despite arriving first, another couple who entered after us was seated at a significantly more favorable table, while we were relegated to a cramped table against the wall, leaving me with limited space. When I politely requested a table change and sought assistance from a manager, the same hostess returned and engaged in verbal aggression, offering excuses rather than providing solutions. After all she made us a “favor” and changed our table which was obviously a much better one. The service continued to deteriorate: appetizers were served hastily and in an unorganized manner, wine service was inaccurate (dirty glass and bottle opened away from the table), and the steak arrived medium instead of medium-rare. At that juncture, we were too fatigued to express further dissatisfaction. With 13 years of experience in the hospitality industry, including management roles as floor bar and general, I am well-acquainted with the challenges associated with the holiday season. However, it is imperative to maintain a professional demeanor, adhere to basic etiquette, and uphold high standards of service. While mistakes may occur, subpar hospitality should never be tolerated. A simple smile and basic respect could have significantly improved the overall experience
