Texas Chili Parlor is a legendary local spot known for its chili, Tex-Mex dishes, and dive bar atmosphere. Customers rave about the chili, especially the meat-only Texas chili, and the generous portions. Some find the service inconsistent.

IN LOVE! Never had a better chilli in Texas in my 35 years of existence! The attention the I’m assuming manager/owner gave us! That tip tier southern hospitality! I highly recommend the chilli dog. The chips and queso with the chilli and the chilli burger and if you like a little spice the MEDIUM is where it’s atttttt!!!! Ohhh and if you like a little drinky drink?! The MAD DOG MARGARITA will get you right! Coming back every time I’m in Austin or PASSING BY!!! Thank you all for the hospitality and experience!!!!
Did you know chili is the official state dish of Texas? I didn’t 😅 Naturally, whenever I’m in Austin, I have to stop by this place near the state Capitol for their Hot XXX Texas chili. No beans, just slow-cooked beef, chili, jalapeños, and onions—with the Mad Dog margs, of course.
This place has one of the greatest atmosphere I’ve ever been, and the food is absolutely amazing. It was my first night in Austin downtown and I really felt as a local.
Friendly staff, great food that is all very spicy, and decent prices! Will definitely be going back on future trips to Austin.
My bf and I LOVE it here. Great food, great prices, great people watching. We were there a couple days ago and this woman got her family kicked out and I reallyyyyyy wanna know the drama I want to know what she did so bad. It was incredible to watch from a couple tables away tho. Love this place and its employees and vibes so much. It never fails me
Texas Chili Parlor is an absolute classic—such a dive in the best possible way, packed with character and history. The atmosphere alone is worth the visit, but the chili is next level. Some of the best chili I’ve ever had. I ordered the chili frito with habanero beans and wow—seriously spicy, bold, and full of flavor. Exactly what you hope for when you come to a place like this. You know it’s good when there’s a 20-minute wait at 2 PM on a Monday. That says everything. Amazing food, awesome vibe, and a true Texas institution. Definitely worth the wait.
You ever walk into a smallish looking dingy dungeon with glowing red lights? That's the ambience of the TCP and it's awesome. You walk into a different world of vintage signs, with a classic looking little bar on your left where you know the regulars sit daily. You're escorted to a table that's jammed among other tables in a rustic setting. And I absolutely love the vibe. The service is amazing and the atmosphere is to match. $25 ribeye steak with potato and salad is the perfect meal for a great price. The chili is spicy as is the waitresses. I would recommend using a bathroom before going into The TCP as you have to duck into the men's washroom through a 20 inch door and avoid the sink at the same time. The washroom is the size of a small closet. But that also adds to the vibe. We had amazing service with Crystal who threw in a couple bumper stickers and that was appreciated. Would definitely eat here again
If you’re going to Austin, you definitely have to consider visiting this place. Like in every downtown, parking is tricky, but it’s worth it. The place has very Texan-style decor, the food is good, but the service from the waitresses is really bad—no interest in providing good service.
Bartender told me "good luck" when asking about service at the bar. I sat at a table instead. Food was very good. Very affordable so the value is there. I had the enchilada and steak plate with a sampling of the XX chili for dinner. The enchiladas were great. The steak wasn't the highest quality but it was seasoned and cooked well. The chili had large chunks of what seemed like chuck. Everything was very good. I went back for lunch and had the two taco plate and the cheese enchilada plate (they were that good the night before). The salsa with the chips and salsa was great. I could drink it. The taco shells would have been better if they had been heated up in an oven or something. The taco meat filling was really tasty. The enchilada plate was fantastic with the ranchero sauce. Service at the table was great both times.
This is a must see and eat place in Austin. The food and service were excellent. We were greeted with smiles and seated quickly. Our waitress explained the menu and the top selections. The food came out quick and hot. The Texas chili is the best for you meat eaters. No beans, just meat. I personally had the lunch special which was an enchilada and a tamale both covered in a chili of your choice and served with rice and beans. My kids got a patty melt and a bacon cheeseburger and my wife got a cup of veggie chili. We destroyed it all and left happy and full. And all for under $50. The atmosphere was eccentric and felt like an old roadside chili bar. I loved it. It got packed by 12:00 with a lot of locals. They know what’s up! Don’t miss out on one good meal at an affordable price at the Texas Chili Parlor.
Delicious food at a reasonable price, in a great, no-nonsense atmosphere. My friend and I had just been complaining about how most places blare music at you to try to make you think you're having a good time, but just make it hard to have a conversation. We immediately noticed that in the Texas Chili Parlor, there is none of that. Just the sounds of people having a good time, without a pumped-up soundtrack. The server was friendly and helpful without being fake bubbly. It was the perfect place to enjoy great chili, eggs, Tex-Mex, and steak.
The food has great flavors, each dish is well-prepared, offering a true taste of Texas comfort food! The service is outstanding. Our waitress was really attentive and efficient, always ensuring that your dining experience is enjoyable and smooth. The experience makes you feel right at home. The decor at Texas Chili Parlor is so lively and inviting, warranting 5 stars! The Texan decor creates a cozy and authentic vibe, perfect for enjoying a meal with friends or family. The ambiance is casual yet energetic, making it an ideal spot for both casual dining and special occasions. All the neon lights make it so cool to see. Texas Chili Parlor offers a delightful dining experience with delicious food, stellar service, and a vivid atmosphere. Highly recommended for anyone looking to enjoy a true Texas culinary experience!
Walked in to eat before UT basketball game. Old school Austin vibe. The food was good. The chili on our enchiladas was the XX but really had no spice so will be back to try the XXX on frito pie. The chips, salsa and queso were tasty.
Stopped in around 9:00 pm 😋 and ordered the steak and enchilada plate, the pork chop (hands down the best), and a chili baked potato. Everything was solid, but the pork chop really stood out. I loved the old-school bar feel—there’s signage everywhere, and I caught myself looking around a lot just taking it all in. The place has character. The environment and how close it was to my hotel are big reasons it earned 4 🌟s. Overall, it was different, unique, and the service was great.
This was on the list of things to do in Austin so when we went there I did not expect to be comforted by a mentally ill man sitting outside the restaurant as I walked in..This man stood in front of my wife blocking the entrance and then came in and spoke to us while we were seated. Not one word was said to this guy by anyone at this establishment!!! The food was okay but I like my Chili with more seasoning. The service was good because our server was real nice. I can say I went 👍🏾
The chili was not like anything I’ve ever had in Texas or elsewhere. It was chunks of beef in a sauce that tasted like straight chili powder and cayanne pepper. I made the mistake of ordering xxx, because I like hot stuff, but this was gratuitously hot with no flavor. Believe it or not, the jalapeños actually helped cool the spice down! Please rework the recipe! 🙏🏽
I came to this Texas chili parlor expecting something hearty and walked out wondering how badly you have to disrespect chili to serve this. What they call chili is a bland, greasy mess with the texture of wet cement. The beans were especially offensive. Mealy and undercooked. While I was there, a huge, out-of-control male customer physically and verbally attacked a small female staff member. Not raised voices. Not a misunderstanding. I’m talking aggressive, threatening behavior directed at someone who was clearly just trying to do her job. And what did management do? Nothing. That’s not “Texas tough” that’s straight cowardice. More disgraceful than the food itself.
See this guy! His name is PEPE AND HE'S RUDE AND DOESN'T LIKE TO WORK! Our last 2 visits and its his shift shift. He tells us we can't sit at the bar because people are sitting there. Both times, we sat at a table by the bar to eat. And both times the seats were still empty when we left. I hope his imaginary friends conti ue to enjoy this place becuase this paying customer will spend our money else where!
6 adults (ages 38-50) visiting from Florida walked in mid afternoon on a Saturday. Place was about half full, decent lunch crowd and lots of open tables. Bartender informed us to seat ourselves. Found two 4-top tables next to bar and proceeded to slide them together so we could sit together (and, seat ourselves). As the tables were almost slid together an older white man who I am assuming owns the place came and aggressively pulls the tables apart rudely saying “I don’t come to your house and start moving furniture around” and mentions we can’t put tables together because of fire code. No, there would’ve been absolutely no obstruction of path to an exit. We don’t run a business or sell a service from our house. We weren’t drunk. We weren’t unruly college students who I am sure they deal with all the time. Just pulling tables together like I’ve seen done in thousands of restaurants. Zero hospitality whatsoever. Menu looked good, too, but I wasn’t about to give that man one dime so my wife and I had waters while others had a drink or two before we went to spend our money elsewhere. This experience motivated me to write my first ever negative online review and that’s saying something. My career is in hospitality, too, so I am more than empathetic to what restaurant owners have to manage and the stress that comes with it. Hospitality industry isn’t for everyone.
