This is an old school lunch place for burgers and dogs. Nothing fancy, but very open and welcoming. The gentlemen that work there are absolutely amazing, so friendly.
Hadn't eaten there since 1969. Other than substituting China for Styrofoam, delicious. Also met owners granddaughter. Wonderful stories. Great birthday meal!
Wanted to give my daughters the full Nick Tahou's experience since we were in town for college registration. Not realizing they closed at 7:00pm, we walked in with just 10 minutes to spare. We were going to get our garbage plates to go, but the owner told us we were welcome to sit and eat while they closed down the place for the night. He was warm and friendly and made my family feel right at ease, and even chatted with us about our hometown of Saranac Lake. The garbage plates were every bit as good as I remembered from my own college days. Now that my daughter will be spending the next four years out there, we'll be hitting Nick Tahou's up again with regularity. In my opinion, you just can't visit Rochester without getting a garbage plate.
Ordered food and unfortunately there was a small problem with not getting one of our orders. Didn't realize this until home and after their close time. Called anyway and it was taken care of immediately. The gentleman that took care of us was wonderful. Great energy great attitude! Will definitely get our business again ! We were there on Thursday and I did not get the kids name but I want to give him a shout out ! Thanks for everything...and thanks for what was in the bottom of the bread bag...he'll know...best regards..the annoying people lol
We visited due to hearing that this was the original spot for a garbage plate. While the interior is vintage, it was very clean. The service was super fast and our chat with the manager was friendly and fun. We thought the garbage plate was tasty and the food was good quality. A fun experience.
Never had a Garbage plate before the girl at the counter helped me choose my plate, she was very patient
You are sure to get your meal piping hot and fast, and it's always a little bit of Rochester history when you stop in for the classic garbage plate!
They’re obviously famous for their garbage plate! Can’t go wrong with that.
Excellent food excellent and fast service. Everyone was very friendly.
I love this place. I love these people. I live in the south but I have been wanting to order the famed garbage plate for years. I called ahead because I realized that I was going to arrive two minutes after closing (I drove a long way to get there). They took my order over the phone. For a couple of bucks more they added a couple of hot dogs to the plate. Best hotdogs ever. Fantastic! amazing! It's a long drive but I am already planning my next trip back. Just go there.
This is the place to get into a good meal after a night out
Wow. I’d read about the garbage plate, and on a recent trip to Rochester, decided I had to try it out. I’ll say that it’s a little difficult to find the restaurant. The signage looks like it is a few decades out of date, and you wonder if there’s anything in the building. The building is also kind of falling apart. You’d never know that a veritable goldmine of culinary delight is hiding behind the crumbling brick. Go around the back and enter in the glass door that is unlabeled. The staff was very eager to explain the various garbage plates. It’s not fancy, but it’s great. I loved everything about my dining experience at Nick Tahou Hots. Food was wonderful and served within five minutes of ordering. I’d give it six stars if it were allowed.
Love the food, very fresh and don't have that sat around grease taste.
First time here but my husband worked at this place in his younger days. Have to say the food was delicious
After moving away after college graduation, I come to Nick's any time I'm visiting Rochester. The Garbage Plate is iconic. I no longer try to eat more than one, but they're as good as ever. The mix of carbs meat and hot sauce is just perfect. Soda and buttered bread to soak up the remains on the plate are essential. Don't miss out if you're in the area. There are many plates in Rochester but only one Nick Tahou's, home of the original!
Shoutouts from Pittsburgh. Don’t be intimated by the hometown greasy spoon vibe. Staff was super chill and friendly even though I didn’t know how to order. Get the white hots, they slap. Definitely stopping by every time I’m in the area.
I just had the most delicious garbage plate with white hots. My sides were macaroni salad and hash browns. I also was served two slices of bread, with butter. The bread was fresh and good. The gentleman at the cash register was nice, informative and helpful. The cook who prepared my meal was excellent and knew what he was doing. I sat inside the restaurant and ate. Everything was clean. Yes, dated furnishings but comfortable. I have been craving a Nick Tahoe's garbage plate forever. I am glad I went. I used a GPS to find Nick Tahoe's restaurant. There is a driveway along the side of the building with many parking spaces in the back. Follow the stand up sign, the door leads into the restaurant. There is also a front door to the restaurant from the street side. Kudos to everyone there. Thank you for a great meal. I will be back!
Saw this joint on YouTube and I had to try the 'Garbage Plate'. Honestly this place is a hole in the wall and could use some TLC. It was reasonably busy and the folks behind the counter were friendly, including the owner, who I'd recognized from the YouTube video. Ordered the classic cheeseburgers on homefries and macaroni salad smothered in meat sauce. The Garbage Plate wasn't spectacular in terms of any individual components, but is a great example of the 'whole being greater than the sum of its parts'. Ate at the counter and it was very good. I may be slightly inflating the rating here with 5 stars, but the originality of the dish and the legendary city-fixture status of the place earns it special consideration. Was certainly not disappointed and will most definity return next time in Rochester.
It's been over 30 years since I've been here. That last time that I went to Nick's, it was about 230 am with a line out the door onto Main St. You used to get your plate and buy a bottle of ketchup for 50 cents to go with your plate as it was the perfect way to end a night of clubbing. It hasn't lost a step. I tried 2 other places that specialize in 'plates' and knew I had to go to the original. I was NOT disappointed. Staff was great and not just to me. I ate .ine in the spot and watched them interact with other patrons. They were very patient with first timers that had never had plates before and even showed what their food would look like before ordering. The place was clean and there was plenty of parking. Spacious seating and they had your meal ready in a reasonable amount of time. I think the portions may be a bit smaller than I remember, but if that's my only complaint, the quality if the food made up for it. Highly recommend and was a great reminder if home. Don't come to Rochester and not try Nick's.
This is a great and iconic eatery in Rochester. Long history and located in a historic train terminal building on Main. Known for their hots and the garbage plate, it's just a good plate of food. The garbage plate has your choice of meat (Texas hot, white hot, hamburger/cheeseburger, sausage) placed on top of fried diced potatoes, mac salad, and then onions under a scoop of their meat. Throw some ketchup on the potatoes, some Frank's on the rest, dig in and enjoy. A couple slices of French bread come with the plate...just in case you didn't get your fill. These plates aren't "amazing", but they are pretty inexpensive ($11) and hit the spot. They keep me coming back. I'm becoming a white hots fan! Tasty dogs! Give it a try, even if just to give the iconic original garbage plate a try!
This place was awesome! The food was great, we got to meet the owner, and the food was ridiculously cheap. Great quality food would recommend to anyone. They're struggling with business and they're considering closing down soon so I recommend that people please check this gem out before it's gone. Home of the original Garbage Plate!
The inside of the building looks like the set out of Saw, the food looks like its out of a college dorm room after a frat party. This is a classic American spot that people from all over come to enjoy. There were people in suits and coveralls standing side by side to get a "gahbage plate". The flavor is here and it makes sense why locals have kept this place alive for 80+ years
If you've never been, please, please go get a plate. It's one of Rochester's best original foods! We have been coming since the 90's and just recently, family that has moved away, had to come here first! Always great, always fun. Go now!
When I heard about “garbage plates” as a dish prior coming here, I was skeptical. We tried their chicken, hamburger and sausage plates, our favorites were chicken and hamburger. Very friendly staff. The portions are quite big , it may not be a bad idea to share a plate if you are not used to eating fried food.
Go as early as they open and its delicious and fresh and you can get what you want how you want it and the pink lemonade is my top notch favorite its the best Everytime I go in there its always good and the place is always clean Don't believe go check it out for yourself Im glad they are still around
Love this place. It's been 25 years since I've lived in Rochester and I stopped in during a visit, the place hasn't changed a bit!! It's exactly the same! Except it was clean 😂. Garbage plates were great, still got the big fork and spoon on the wall, old drinking fountain, old candy machine, menu, payphone. I love that it's never changed. Same surly cooks working 😂. Don't ever change Nick Tahous!!
Everyone working was really friendly. The food is ready quickly and tastes absolutely amazing. Prices are reasonable too. It's nothing super fancy looking inside but they have tons of seating available and you can sit at the counter too and watch the chef at work. Highly recommend stopping by and grabbing a garbage plate if you are nearby.
Nick Tahou Hots, a Rochester institution known for their Garbage Plates, has an exterior that may give you second thoughts, but don't let that deter you from experiencing the delicious food within. I recently tried their cheeseburger plate and was thoroughly impressed. The generous serving of juicy burger patty, topped with melted cheese and accompanied by a mound of perfectly cooked home fries and macaroni salad, was a satisfying and flavorful meal. Once inside, the ambiance shifts from the initial impression of a condemned building to a cozy dining room and bustling kitchen. The staff was friendly and accommodating, enhancing the overall dining experience. The service was prompt despite the busy lunch hour, and my order was served hot and fresh. Overall, Nick Tahou Hots exceeded my expectations with their tasty cheeseburger plate and efficient service. While the exterior may need a bit of sprucing up, the food and atmosphere inside more than make up for it. I would recommend giving Nick Tahou Hots a try for a true taste of Rochester comfort food at its finest.
This is the best food option I've experienced in months. The owner Alex is so kind and so are the employees. The Garbage plate is delicious!! And you can get a vegetarian version. I would recommend this to anyone coming to Rochester. Really good value, you get a ton of food for the price. I'll be eating the rest for breakfast. I was kind of having a difficult week having a meal here turned it around. I will be coming back.
I'm thrilled to give Nick Tahou Hots a five-star review! Our visit to this iconic Rochester establishment was absolutely fantastic. The "garbage plate" that they are renowned for exceeded all expectations - it was an explosion of flavors and textures that left us craving for more. The service was friendly and efficient, adding to the overall wonderful experience. If you're in Rochester, don't miss the chance to indulge in the deliciousness that Nick Tahou Hots has to offer!
Heard about this place from a friend from Rochester and I'm glad I visited. What a unique experience! The staff are extremely friendly and patient. The food is tasty and the restaurant is very large inside. The bathrooms are very clean. It was very interesting to hear the history of Rochester and this location. The staff are very proud to work here.
Respects to the inventor of the Garbage Plate which as an out-of-towner, I wanted to try something Rochester, New York and this was it... Enjoyed going to the original location. The garbage plate consisted of picnic style macaroni salad with home fries and topped with a cheeseburger patty, hot link, and a lighter version of Cincinnati chili IMO. I thought it was pretty good being that I never had it before... but then I thought it was really good after eating it with the bread and butter 😆

Visiting Rochester for the first time and was told to come here to try the original garbage plate (cheeseburger). Garbage plate was good, but would like to try other kinds in the future. Western egg sandwich was as expected. Restaurant is nothing fancy at all, but definitely visited often by locals.
Good quality food. Prices Good. Establishment is clean but very dated. Would recommend.
The customer service was very good. I tried the cheeseburger garbage plate and it was ok could use more, more sauce. My bite was dry. 😔 not enough mac salad maybe I should of added beans which I thought came with it according to other pictures but I was wrong. I took my food to go and I enjoyed it the next day with Redhot hot sauce and more ketchup adding mustard to the pile. 🙂 waste nothing. While there I grabbed a bumper sticker for 2.00 😁 I am now traveling back to Texas to enjoy the HEAT haha.. jokingly and grabbing some much needed BBQ. I'm sure I'll be back to try another garbage plate. Toodles for now.
Was fine. I found out I don't like garbage plate. If you like it its probably great. Lots of heartburn.
First time visiting "the original" home of the garbage plate - boy did I miss that scrumptious garbage plate combos that I remembered getting at 3AM after a college night on the town. As others mentioned, place is run down which we didn't mind one bit, almost feels like nostalgia. Staff was overly friendly and we felt so welcomed!! I enjoyed my plate, definitely felt like it was missing something though but couldn't put my finger on it (I did end up adding ketchup to it too). The macaroni salad was AMAZING, my favorite part for sure. My guest who had never had a plate before was less than thrilled. He thought the burgers were very overcooked and lacked in flavor. Sadly his favorite part was the bread served with it. Would go back again.
The famous Garbage Plate was messy and filling, with layers of flavor that worked better than expected, though the presentation was rough. Staff were efficient, and the no-frills, local vibe made it feel like a true Rochester experience.
You know what you're getting when you come here, and it hits that expectation well. You walk in and the atmosphere has several staff making food and calling out plates out loud. Decor gives the restaurant a nice vibe. Food is what you'd expect so rating it on that. Large portions and lots of carbs. I got the veggie burger plate and it was fine... It's an experience I guess
This place had been on my list for a long time, but Rochester was never really nearby. That changed with a trip to the Finger Lakes. \n\nStopped here on a Saturday for lunch. \n\nNot the most glamoro…
I guess I was a little disappointed. The service was fine and the food was good. But the famous garbage plate just wasn't what it was cracked up to be. I had the hamburger, hot dog, fries and Macaroni salad garbage played. The topping was nothing great. I was hungry and ate it but probably won't go out of my way again to get it. Tahou's is an OK place to eat.
Food is okay, I’ve had better plates. Service wasn’t the best, I had to read out my card number in front of multiple other customers which was not okay, and after it went through the man serving us said it was cancelled as a “joke,” but it was pretty embarrassing in the moment. All in all I wouldn’t come here again.
Prices were reasonable. Service was good. Food was okay. Not 5 stars because it was a little disappointing being the home of the original garbage plate, and not being the best plate in the area. As advid garbage plate eaters... we were excited to try this home of the garbage plate place unfortunately recommend going to bill grays or any town hots place over this.
So, an iconic Place to Rochester, New York. I can see the draw to this casual diner dive. They’re known for their garbage plates, which is kind of a plate with a bunch of stuff on it. This is not…
Place was very clean, you can tell they care for the place- service was great, the guy was funny and it had unlimited refills for soda... But the food lacked seasoning. But everything was fresh- if you don't like salt or seasoning on you're food you'll love it but I think it was a little plain. - I think the pepsi was more flavorful then the food. BUT if you're watching your sodium then its good for you!
I use to frequent this place as a kid & loved it. When I came to visit Rochester after almost 20 years ai was excited to have that great Nick's hot dog & garbage plate. The portions aren't what they use to be & the flavor is bland. My friends & I were disappointed & will never return again. Not the Nick Tahous I grew up loving
After hearing so much about it, I have to say I'm a little disappointed. How is this place the most well-known restaurant in all of Rochester? That being said, it was indeed food. It tasted fine and it did fill me up! It does, however, win the award for worst-looking restaurant I've ever seen. I assume they are aware of this but wear it with a badge of pride. Surely a two-star review like this one means nothing to a place that creates this kind of vibe haha.
Unfortunately Nick Tahou Hots is no longer the best place to get a plate. Others have come along with better sauce and much better customer service. Service is terrible (honestly though it’s part of the experience) and you come in to see piles of home fries that have been sitting in the grill for who knows how many countless hours. Nobody writes anything down so if you’re with a larger group keep your orders simple or it might come out wrong. It’s the original so you have to go at least once but after you’ve been there a much better places to go and get the same thing. The old timers that grew up with this place are loyal to it and will tell it’s the best but there is a heavy bias!
Really underwhelming food. Everything about the cheeseburger plate except the mustard was bland... potatoes, mac salad, burger, cheese, meat sauce, onions all bland. You can douse that with Frank's…

The cook said something strange to me as she was giving me my food. She said “everything was cooked and prepared fresh.” I found this to be strange. I never questioned anything. I ate my food and then I got sick shortly afterwards. I don’t trust them and I will never go back. It’s not what it used to be. My fries were cooked on the grill, no grease, which to me kills bacteria and the burgers tasted funny. The sauce was nonexistent. It used to be very diverse in the restaurant, it’s not anymore. I’m talking about the workers and the customers. The old Nick Tahou was the joint back in the day. What they have going on in there now is strange. The older man that took my order wasn’t nice at all. I will never ever go back.
I saw One of the cooks take out trash I saw that same cook go back in did not wash his hands and put on already used gloves. I could not and would not order any food. I just left, this was today, August 9, 2025
Stop n my way home and never again. Customer service was very friendly but for the same amount I paid here I could go elsewhere and get more food hotter and more meat sauce. I know times are though but geez u want to keep customers make your plates look like something you would be proud of not just thrown together. Had my food in less then 2 mins did it even get heated up? Think twice about stopping here not the same as it used to be as kids. So sad
Absolutely terrible food. A gristly burger and otherwise flavorless food. The only thing seasoned and with any taste was yellow mustard, and it comes that way out of the jar. Customers arguing with each other about who was first, arguing with the cashier about who ordered first and in what order the food came out. Dirty and uncared for interior. And a lovely narcan dispenser just in case. Would never recommended even as a prank to someone I hated.
