The prices are good, food good, the service was a 10!!! Last minute party for 14 and the take was ready for us, drinks stayed filled, the chips and salsa kept coming. Thank you so much for the wonderful service!!!
I had their flautas today! They were fresh and full of chicken. Their salsa is the spiciest I've ever had that is served with chips. Most places I dip the tortilla chip and scoop up salsa. Here I dip my chip because that's all the spice I need. My wife always gets the quickie plate...2 enchiladas, rice, beans, a queso chalupa and their creamy guacamole on the side. Always pleasurable dining! Too bad their location at Brooks City Base closed. Location location location.
This place is a great place to have lunch and dinner.. I will come again and bring family.. we just moved to the neighborhood we always lived downtown. So in my opinion this place can out match "Mi Tierra" any day.. very clean excellent serve and food delicious. I had The Flauta plate 👍👍I'm glad we bumped into this place you get a 5 from me😉
It was Saturday morning, we wanted IHOP but it was too far/expensive. We decided to go to Walmart since we didn’t know what we wanted so my husband just pulls in here. I was in love with the decorations from the moment I walked in, I didn’t know I was guna become attached lol We sat down and the waiter was super nice and he tells us “Did you want to eat here” we look at him and laugh and we’re like “Yeah we’re sitting down” and then he said “We have a buffet and we also have to order off the menu” we look at each other and we were shocked. YA’LL! This place is amazing! By far our favorite spot! The food was delicious. We literally tried everything! Pancakes, Omelettes, eggs, toast, French toast are all made to order how you want. The food is fresh and taste so good! The tortillas are homemade and hot. The beans are homemade refried beans! The huevos rancheros sauce is my favorite!! Btw I love the faucets lol Definitely give them a shot! 😁
Been going here since I was a wee lass! I love their chips and salsa, their enchiladas, nachos, and even their steak. Everything is really good, though. Staff is friendly and hard-working, and the new bar is awesome. Try the jalapeno margarita - yum! Also, they're open late now, as well. One more thing: their breakfast tacos are the bomb! (And you can get them all day long!)

Out of towners and saw the good reviews. Great tacos, awesome beans and friendly service. Good health rating too. I'd eat here next time we're in SA.
It's not exactly cheap, but they have good food. I definitely recommend the carne guisada taco, one of the best in town.

First time visiting, and it was a really good experience. Our food was delicious, and the service was great and quick. My only small gripe was the margarita — I asked for a regular one but got a strawberry margarita instead. No complaints on the taste, it was actually really good so I didn’t say anything but I did notice we were charged an extra dollar for the strawberry flavor, lol. Either way, we’ll definitely be back! The tortillas were amazing! But I won’t be ordering a $16 Margarita.
Really good food... , authentic as far as I can see... really great service and friendly. It's a cool place inside, reminded me of my trips to Mexico, but I'm not Mexican so unsure of how Mexicans would view it. I thought it was a little pricey, but I think that was the alcohol 🍸. I would recommend it though... we visit San Antonio frequently, so I'm sure we will be back
Nice atmosphere and okay food. This place was recommended to me for the puffy tacos which were pretty decent. The cheese enchiladas were good but they used processed cheese for everything. American cheese is fine it’s the enchiladas are 6.99 but at these prices, no thanks. The floor tortillas had that nice dense homemade flavor to them. Oh and that big chunk of meat on top of the enchilada was very pink inside.
You know how there are some restaurants you went to as a kid and when you return as an adult with adult tastes they just don't hold up? El Tipico is not one of those places. Their menu promises to uphold the founder's legacy, and they do a prime job of that. The tortilla chips are still house made, the puffy tacos are still small and tasty, the salsa will still burn your tongue off if you're not careful. I'm pretty sure the chalupa is even better than it was when I was a child. Every time, the food is hot and fresh. Occasionally the service is not on point, but that seems the norm these days. It *is* always friendly.
Asada was a skirt steak. hardest piece of rock I have ever tasted. I would not recommend the Asada to anyone. take it off your menu

Food was to get here at 6:58-7:18 I've called and called and no answer I've been waiting for my food!!!
San Antonio institution. Have eaten here most of their 50 years in business and have to say to them "keep on truckin'"! As always, great drinks, great meal. Recommended!
We love this place and been going for 30+ years, however the food quality has definitely declined. Their puffy taco didn't have cheese on it and the enchilada sauce tasted store bought. Wish it was like the old days.
1st x here, happened to stop by (since a place we wanted to go didnt open till 3 pm). Area: Very clean, good music, restroom very clean, greated right away (lunch time rush). seated right away. Does get busy (looked like) Food: Chips are toated and crispy, was very good, salsa for me was not for my taste, spouse semi liked it but we didnt not much care for it (taste was very spicey, but ot wasnt due to the spicey, it was to much of the flavor that was not so good) believe me we know salsa. but again some arw ok with that taste. Food was fresh, great taste, very elegant plate and how they serve it. Its not one of them taqueria/mexican.. more of an up-scale place. Very good atmosphere area, staff is good. This place does has its own spereate bar w/giant TV screen. they have rooms for private meeting and you can schedule a private party/meeting. Would we come visit again, not really it was a one time stop, just happen to pass by and it was good.

El Tipico is known for the best mexican food in the city over 50 years going strong, I've eaten here for a very long time and in recent times ive seen the change. The one thing you absolutely don't change is the enchiladas sauce and they did. Why? It was the best for over 50 years. One time they put regular ground beed not the enchiladas sauce in the puffy tacos big mistake it changed the whole flavor! Now to move forward and change the enchilada sauce, its not the same. Its too runny taste like store bought sauce not homemade. The other thing that has changed is the chips, where are the homemade chips?? Used to have corn white and red chips..no more? Now the chips don't even taste fried they are store bought and taste stale. The next thing is different waiters would automatically bring fresh corn and flour tortillas to the table...with butter! You have to ask and I dont even know if they make corn anymore fresh to the table. THE FLOUR IS GOOD, BUT OFFER BUTTER... The beans and rice are still okay and breakfast is okay...but Its the mexican food that went down... The prices were so much cheaper back then and got way more food. You have to ask for more tea once they take your food plate away. Why cant we get El Tipico back??? This change is not welcome to the ones that kept them in business all these years. I dont feel I can recommend it anymore...its dissapointing for sure. Maybe change the name to El Tipico express, because this not the original recipes, its tasting more like fast food.
One of my all time favs has bad management. If you post, you are open in till 9pm. Then do not close at 830, 845, 815. Happen to me 4 times now. I don't care when you close...just Publish a schedule …
Not good. waited 20-30 minutes to be checked out. I almost walked out without paying there was no cashier. Saw a roach by the door inside the restaurant as I was exiting.
I ordered Beef Crispy Tacos for lunch. This was a first and LAST experience. My daughter was treating me to lunch and she wasted her money on my food. I thought it was impossible to screw up tacos …

Check your receipts. I was given one price, then another at the window then a third final price. She said it was a credit card fee. But it was put in as custom price. Be honest about the price, feels like you are stealing.
The food and service has definitely changed and not better. Took over 10 mins for our drink order and menus. My house special steak was a very small portion. I wanted a baked potato but got fries instead. No big deal, I didn't complain. My son's hamburger steak came with a ketchup size serving of gravy. The waiter brings a small bowl of enchilada gravy. Wth? We send it back and they bring out a small bowl of gravy. When we go to pay they charge me $5.95 for guacamole. I was thinking it was an honest mistake. When I inform the register girl that we didnt get guacamole, she says extra gravy would be like 50 cents, she calls the waiter, he says that the charge for the gravy. Almost $6 for gravy is ridiculous. I paid but will probably be my last time after being there on a regular basis at all 3 locations for years. Very disappointing. We had already thought the waiter was having an off day and didnt speak up. But the charge for guacamole was just wrong! Looking back...The fact that he didn't hand me the receipt when he rang it up before calling the register girl to collect the money tells me he was being dishonest since the beginning. I have not been disappointed with el ElTipico until today. Watch what they charge you!!! Good bye.
Wasnt what i expected .I asked for a med -well steak . Came out hard & over cooked .disappointed in veggies. basically season salt on it. The cheese on the steak with onions didnt melt well .oily need to re consider the one cooking it . My son asked for carde asada and got a over cooked piece of meat .. the tea was over sweeten and by the second cup I felt a upset stomach .I pushed through it . By the time we got in the hi way my stomach was turning bad .pulled over on hi way. And threw up everything I just ate .I know something wasn't right
Now I have been coming here for a while. And I always gets the same order rice and beef fajitas. Today I went and I spent almost 30$ to only get 3 orders of old Spanish rice that’s so old and ever hard. I was very upset when I made it home. I called they picks up the phone and plays like the connection is bad and hangs up. That’s very very lazy. Their In their Not working Turing down costumers. All because they don’t want to work and fix the food. I went back there the lady took it and I guess she went and showed it to the manager. So she comes back and tells me. We can Not change this Rice this is the only rice we have and we can give u any money back because u didn’t check it before u left. But my receipt shows the timing less then 20 minutes I lives 7 minutes away. She told me her Name was Linda and She’s only a cashier there. I don’t believe her. I said ok I’ll bring it back in the morning to let the manager know what you all or selling costumer. And running away het business. Sorry lazy workers. Everyone Knows and can tell when rice been sitting up for to long
I'm honestly a little upset with this location, it was the first time I try it, I tell them, "Hey please get my order right since restaurants don't always give you the accurate order" It's crazy to think that serving myself 6 bean and cheese, 3 customized with bacon, 2 country and eggs, and 2 menudos comes off to $50. This was during morning time too and some restaurants give you a discount for that. Apart from this restaurant coming off Expensive, they also FORGOT 1 of the bean and cheese which BARELY has any beans or cheese in them, the sauce they gave me was pretty much empty and expired. I simply would not recommend this place to ANYONE I hope to see their downfall someday, I truly do. This is ridiculous
The place is aesthetically appealing, great atmosphere, but that was the best part about it. First of all the service left much to be desired. It did not seem that the restaurant was busy enough for the servers to be so inattentive, but they were very hard to catch right from the beginning, the ones who try to avoid looking at you, so you literally have to catch them. When we finally got our food it was cold. Room temperature at best for both enchilada plates. The burger on the kids plate was at least warm, but the fries were the only thing that was hot. Even when the food was heated up, it was bland and tasteless. I was very disappointed in the food and the service. We went here because someone compared their enchiladas to Jacalas. Wow, was that wrong. We had to work hard to catch someone to bring us the check, even. Maybe we went on a bad night, but that was my experience. Good luck.
The service was bad. We got seated drinks taken and brought to the table then it took 15 minutes for a very nice young man to ask if our order had been taken. Our silverware was brought to us dirty still had avacado on it. No one checked on us we to ask for the tortillas that went with our plate twice. Asked for a small plate for my child he said they where out but they would wash one and bring it to us when he brought it to us it still had queso smeared on it and a piece of lettuce stuck to it. Just horrible never going again. The food was okay. The only clean thing was the restroom.
Not impressed, first off we were seated at a dirty table. There was a weird smell in the restaurant. I ordered enchiladas which came out wrong and with mediocre taste. My wife ordered jalapeno poppers which tastes good but the chips and queso tasted like it was melted velveeta cheese. Bathrooms were dirty and smelly. And we were charged extra for a kids drink even though it said included on the menu. We will not be back here on our next San Antonio visit.
