The I Bar is an iconic, military-only bar on NAS North Island, known for its Top Gun inspiration and aviation history. Customers love the friendly staff and unique atmosphere, but newcomers should be aware of the bar's rules to avoid buying a round for everyone.

Avis sur World Famous I Bar San Diego
First time at I Bar. Been a fan since seeing Top Gun Mavericks version on big screen. Very small but very authentic and a tribute to all aviators. If you can go, get there.
Figured i had to stop by when in town to the bar Hard Deck was copied from. Cool place to visit and have a drink. Added my own units patch, met an astronaut, and had a few tasty beverages.
Wife was stationed here as CH46 pilot with Helicopter Support Squadron HC-11 "Gunbearers". Im Army she told me keep hands in pockets dont touch anything or I have to buy everyone a drink. Amazing place great atmosphere. And yes we have that Army-Navy rivalry.
Been wanting to visit this place for awhile since I'm a big fan of TopGun: Maverick. This bar was the inspiration for the Hard Deck bar in the movie, down to the airplane models on the ceiling. It's a very small place and doesn't accommodate a a lot of people. For special events, they do have an adjacent room that's large enough for ceremonies. Some things to keep in mind: don't touch the model airplanes and don't put your phone on the bar (or else you'll have to buy everyone a round). You'll also need a military ID to get in base unless you're with someone who has one.
The *Inspiration* for penny’s bar in Top Gun Maverick. Many elements were taken from the bar into the set used for the movie, including the bell for hats and cell phones on the table. Per CBS8’s segment on it, the bar was too small to film on.
A Navy Helicopter Heritage Bar w/ lots of models. 4 rules: 1.no cover inside 2. Don't touch the models 3. No Phones on Bar 4. Dice off the floor Break one... buy the bar a round. Open to those with base access. One of the top 3 military bars I've visited. Decent well of drinks. Friendly aviators.
Definitely worth a stop in if you are on the corondado base. The bartenders are very friendly. But make sure to follow the rules or you might find yourself buying the bar a round.
Great friendly little bar on base. They have free pizza during "happy hour". I my case it was not free. It was the first place I found after arriving on a Space A flight and checking into my room. Don't be a rookie like me and walk in with a baseball cap (hat) or you will hear cheers and a bell ring. Next thing you know your buying a round for the bar. Thankfully, when I entered only four people where at the bar. The round was $32.00 with tip. Four new friends, great conversation and several slices of pizza (to try to make up for the loss). They also have rules against putting a cell phone on the bar (almost got me on that one also) & touching any of the model aircraft hanging from the ceiling so be careful. Hey, I am retired Air Force what do I know about crazy Navy rules. It was all good.
On board NAS North Island. Inspired a Top Gun 2 movie set. Legendary bar for Naval Aviators. I hope my ashes end up on a shelf behind the bar.
This on base bar/club is a hidden gem. We had a great command outing and I enjoyed a solo visit once before as well. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. Just be certain to read the rules or you may find yourself buying a round for the room!
I DJ events at I Bar. The atmosphere is amazing with plenty of history of North Island & aviation. The staff is friendly. Great place for an event but there is no AC. I highly recommend!
Very nice Officer's Club. Great food and spirits. CONGRATULATIONS to Commanders Allyn and Stacy Uttecht on their Retirement and Thank you for your Service ❤

I finally visited the Famous IBAR I had been wanting to visit since I saw Top Gun. I was fortunate enough to get 3 chips for comped drinks being that people were break the “Famous Bar Rules”! But I really loved this place and looking forward to coming back.
Awesome ! I was feeling like a kid in this amazing bar ! Top Gun vibes but IRL. Staff is incredibly nice and passionate too. If I wasn't coming back to France, I would go there every night 😌 I'll be back ! Thank you K 🇨🇵
This place is normally NOT open on a Saturday. The staff encouraged us to come in and have a drink. After seeing Top Gun Maverick, my son made me take him there. The place is pretty small. The bartender said they had to.replicate the place on a stage. Because all the equipment and Tom Cruises head would not fit.
Military Only , located on base North Island, lots of fun. Fun people, good drinks, remember to follow the rules, if not it will get expensive very quick.
Iconic bar, worth the trip if you have the access. Prices were reasonable and they had decent beer selections. They also have a popcorn machine. Update, I went back, with a hat on. I had to buy a round for about 10 people. Make sure you know the rules.
AMAZING! Our last stop for the night, with our whole wardroom, it was a total blast!!! The bartender handled all of our orders and the whole group very well, despite an extremely rowdy dice game! Full of history from all the aviators who have gone before us, it was the best way to celebrate together and not have to deal with the drama of rides and driving on base... We all simply walked back to our lodging after the night was over!!!
Fun, old school Navy pilot bar on the Naval Air Station. You need military access to get in, but put your phone on the bar and then enjoy the show!
Congratulations and thank you for sending Debbie to lead the I Bar det at Hook ‘25. You truly support the fleet.
