Super high quality sushi and amazing service! The lovely girl who served us double and triple checked ingredients to make sure they would be safe for my mom’s food allergies and even made her a fresh miso soup to make sure that she could enjoy it. We will most definitely be back!!
The tastiest salmon sashimi! The place itself is quite cute and the service is speedy. We came here for lunch, starving, and they served us right away. The best roll we had was the cherry blossom roll (with salmon of course), and the takoyaki was pretty tasty too. The mango salmon roll was decent, but the mango sauce seemed like it had some mustard-y flavor to it, which was odd. Overall, would come back again!
Nice sushi restaurant a few blocks up from Union Square. It was yummy and fresh😌I would recommend it to a friend
After walking aimlessly trying to find a suitable fresh oyster place we decided to back track to this restaurant. Hands down best decision we've made in San Fransico. I never write reviews. Best sushi and oysters I've EVER had. Everything was fresh and taste amazing. Absolutely zero complaints.
I went here for dinner and got the volcano roll, yellowtail roll and a salmon and shrimp udon noodle soup. The sushi was bomb but not so much the soup. The soup was salty but I was grateful for their accommodations. I requested for salmon when it wasn't on their menu. Thank you! No negative stars here.
Maru Sushi in downtown San Francisco is a great choice if you’re craving fresh, flavorful sushi right in the middle of the city 🍣. Conveniently located near Powell, it’s an easy stop whether you’re exploring downtown or grabbing a meal before heading home 🚇. The sushi is consistently impressive. I tried the Powell and Go-Go rolls, and both are excellent if you enjoy a crispy, satisfying bite 🔥✨. They deliver that perfect crunch without overpowering the flavors. I also ordered the spicy tuna sushi, which was delicious—fresh, well‑seasoned, and with just the right amount of heat 🌶️. The ambiance is a bit outdated, but it has a slow, relaxed feel that actually makes the meal unhurried and comfortable 😌🪑. It’s not modern or trendy, but it creates a calm, low‑key dining experience that works surprisingly well for a casual sushi night. Service was warm and attentive, though there’s still room for improvement in terms of speed and coordination 😊🕒. Even so, the staff’s friendliness adds to the overall experience. Overall, I’d give Maru Sushi a solid 8/10—great sushi, good value, and a place I’d happily return to for another round of rolls ⭐️.
That’s one of my favorite place in San Francisco! Tasty rolls and sushi , I like oysters most of all! My favorite rolls are Cherryblossom. Good stuff! I will come back again)
Great atmosphere, excellent and fast service. Tried the 49ers and was so good and was debating if I should order 2nd one but I know I can’t finish 2 orders 😅
This place is definitely a little on the pricey side, but honestly? It’s so worth it. The sushi is absolutely amazing — super fresh, beautifully prepared, and surprisingly filling (and I say that as a proud foodie who can really eat). Every piece was packed with flavor and the quality was obvious from the first bite. What really stood out, aside from the delicious food, was how spacious it is. Unlike a lot of sushi spots in SF that can feel cramped or crowded, this place has tons of room. There’s a large sushi bar area where you can watch the chefs work their magic, plus plenty of table seating that’s perfect for groups or parties. It’s a great spot if you’re coming with friends, celebrating something, or just want to spread out and enjoy your meal. The service was also on point — super fast, attentive, and really friendly. Even when it got busy, the staff kept things running smoothly and made us feel welcome the whole time. Yes, it’s on the pricier side, but for sushi this fresh and a space this comfortable, I felt like I got great value. I left full, happy, and already planning my next visit. Highly recommend if you’re looking for quality sushi and a great vibe in San Francisco!
Such a nice place for a great sushi dinner! The staff were so attentive and so so nice. The fish was great quality and there are multiple options to choose from! Loved it here!
Love the ambience and the best part is the tasty food. The lady who owns the restaurant was welcoming and treated us like we were in home. Visited few times while staying in the city. My go to place for stir fried noodles and sushi when I visit SFO again
Nice little japanese restaurant by union square. Staff is friendly and food was delicious.
So I came here for a quick lunch. Got chicken karage and a la bamba roll. I really enjoyed all of it. The chicken was crisp and the sauce was good. The roll was super yummy and I could barely taste the cilantro, which was great for me (not a fan). The waitress was super nice and the service was fast, but I did go early afternoon on a weekday. If you need a quick bite I would recommend!
Excellent food, helpful and pleasant staff.
My husband has been here lots of times while traveling for business but this was my first time. They serve wonderfully fresh and delicious fish in a very traditional atmosphere that is lovely. We eat a lot of sushi and sashimi and really appreciate how fresh and beautiful their fish is. I cannot wait to return. I’m not sure what the unfavorable reviews are but suspect people may want a flashier place but this restaurant isn’t about that. It’s about quality and serving beautiful food.
After visiting the best dentist office DSF Dr. joseph in SF. We tried Maru Sushi, it's just one minute away from our dental office. It's not the expensive kind of luxury sushi restaurant. It's more like a 7-11 kind of daily meal sushi restaurant around your house corner in Japan everywhere. The price is very friendly. Service is decent. Food is delicious. Sapporo on tap is superb. I always passing by when I was on a cable car riding the hills. Finally get to try it. Will come back.

Nice little japanese restaurant by union square. Staff is friendly and food was delicious.
We went there twice in a row for dinner and were not disappointed. I loved the Tempura, the Kamikaze, and the Labamba rolls in particular. The Vulcano chocolate cake is also outstanding. Try the Japanese Plum wine. Outstanding food, overall.

Great place to come with a friend or on your own. My go to is Labamba (no tomatoes) and miso soup. Honestly, everything is delicious.
Nice place with some inventive rolls and fresh fish. Daily specials were better and more interesting than some of the standards. Sushi rice was a bit cold. Staff was very friendly and attentive. Romeo and Juliet roll was excellent. So was Hamachi carpaccio.
Had an amazing dining experience at Maru Sushi. I highly recommend their Chicken Teriyaki Bento Box. It’s a well rounded meal for a great price. Their Nabe Yaki Udon soup is also delicious. It’s served hot in a cauldron like vessel, which makes it even more special. The Shrimp Tempura Roll is worth tasting. I wish it had more shrimp though.
Everytime. I mean every. single. time. I'm in SFO, I always stop at Maru. Awesome fish quality. Pretty varied menu and special fish offerings every now and again.
Delicious dinner combo! A good deal, comes with salad, rice, yummy miso soup for a cold San Francisco night. I chose spicy tuna roll and tofu teriyaki as the main and they were both excellent! Will be back next time we’re in town.
Family and I went on a Monday, so the place was almost empty. I ordered the Bento Box w/ 3 items. The portions were just enough to make me satisfied, but not enough to take some to-go. I do not recall which three items I chose, but it is worth noting that you aren't allowed any duplicate items. I also ordered some dragon rolls. A lot of the menu options comes with white rice, salad, and miso soup. The food was delicious. We had a lady serve us and she was very quick to clear our table. I've never seen service that quick. I'd pick up the last sushi roll and she's there to take the plate off our table. I'd finish my miso soup and she's already there to take the bowl. The place was empty, so that could be the reason, but it was still fun to watch. Our table was already cleared before we even paid! I would come back here the next time I come back to San Francisco.

Came here intending to have a quick lunch the other day, but unfortunately received quite poor service. It took a while to get the attention of a waiter to let us order, and while we were ordering our waiter seemed confused with what we wanted and we weren't sure she had heard it all. We ordered a few rolls, a curry, and a ramen, and waited about 20 minutes before inquiring as to the progress of our meal. We asked three separate wait staff who said they would check, until one of them realised our order had not actually been put through. We had a flight to catch that afternoon so it was quite a stressful experience. Finally the waiter came over and explained the situation to us and said the food would be out in 5 minutes. The food did come then which was good, and we were offered complimentary dessert as an apology. The food itself was pretty good, I wish they marked their vegan options though because I had to just guess. I got the Kawaii roll and the Popeye roll, which both tasted good. Overall a good meal, just wish we could have had a better experience with the service.
To start, the price is great. Its surprisingly affordable for the area of town it's in. The food is good, and the service is attentive. I started with mixed tempura, which was seasoned well and cooked perfectly. Next was chicken teriyaki, which was good, but the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars. I felt like the sauce was solid but not great, and I would have liked to see more vegetables worked in. That said, great meal, and well presented.
This restaurant has a nice and cozy ambience. The fish was fresh, but quality is average. I ordered an off menu item (nothing fancy, just an ikura hand roll), and the price was way more than that of two pieces of ikura nigiri, which was a bit of a surprise. The sushi chef was nice and we had a friendly chat.
Typical Japanese food. Prices about what you would expect. Caterpillar roll good but on the small side. The sashimi appetizer was very good. The combo plate of teriyaki beef and mixed tempura was so so as the beef was very chewy. The mixed tempura was cooked just right. Not exceptional but okay for if you're in the area to try.
Fantastic sushi at this rather dim lit, no frills, yet authentic Japanese decor Sushi Bar. Located right off of Union Square in San Francisco, with late hours, it is a great option when downtown. Extremely fresh seafood with a unique menu of fusion rolls, served by a friendly staff and very reasonable prices; this place is a definite winner among the zillions of sushi bars in SF. Oysters and wakame were simply delicious, tempura rolls served at proper temperature, great flav profiles. 👍🏽 Would highly recommend.
After a 4 mile walk in the city, I was craving for some sushi and stumbled upon Maru Sushi. I ordered some gyoza, shrimp tempura and chicken Katsu. The gyoza was mediocre, frozen ones at Costco taste better, shrimp tempura was good, probably the best part of my dinner, fried chicken was crispy and katsu curry was ok. It had veggies like a homemade curry, it tasted more like Indian or Jamaican. It did not have the strong flavors that I had at other Japanese spots. The food is good, not great. It was conveniently located close to my hotel and I did not want to look for anything else. If you are in the neighborhood and want some sushi, go for it. I did not order sushi due to reviews about bad fish. Didn’t wanna mess myself up while on business trip. Place is well priced in expensive San Fran.
Came here for dinner alone for work and they are busy at 9! They could be slightly understaff but they have regulars for sure. The sushi slices are thick! The way I liked it. Overall, great place to have quick dinner.

Very good food but service could use an upgrade. They were nice but slow. The food however made everything worth it. I recommend this place. I will definitely be back.

We had 2 rolls the Lion king and the scallop baked roll, and the kansu bowl. Everything was delicious. Giving it 3 stars due to the price. Just very pricey. I've had just as good rolls at other places for less $$.

I am mostly docking stars for very lacking bizarre behavior of our server (an older woman), who at first did not seem to understand I wanted to make sure what I order is gluten free. Then, once she understood, said “no” to an item that was gf/or easily customizable not to include any. We had to ask for soy/tamari mixing dish. They did have tamari sauce, but she poured me very little and then put it away from us. In general there was a bit of stinginess going on also with the fish pieces that were cut thinner than we are used to. I am a bit confused about it. I would have paid a bit more if it was a cost issue. Same goes for the ginger… When we ordered she over explained (like an adult talking to a toddler on why we don’t wear our boots to bed at night). It was annoying, and I had to do my best not to take it personally. The music was “interesting” and aimed at some person who thought that music was “rad” in the 90s. At least it wasn’t very loud. The food was itself was what you would expect from a sushi restaurant in SF where there are so many restaurants, that any restaurant who wouldn’t serve good food will have no repeat customers. I will not be a repeat customer. But mostly because there are so many other restaurants to check out

The sushi is OK and the atmosphere is authentic and nice… HOWEVER, Saturday night three weeks before Christmas they staffed only one poor server running solo around the dining room, sitting and greeting guests, serving, cleaning and sweeping the floor after guests leave. Granted it got slower as we were leaving (5:40 pm) but I hope for her sake it won’t be busier than when we arrived. As my first time here it want a pleasant look when we arrived. As we left, 6 pm, it started getting busier (photo 3). Shame on the owners for not having more help and overworking only one person on a Saturday.
There are much better Japanese restaurants around, so this one is not recommended if you have other choices. It is NOT authentic and any close to it. Worst thing is that many dishes are not fresh. Edamame is apparently cooked for a long time and just re-steamed before serving. Tasteless. The crispy tofu is so poised to be crispy, but due to the same reason it is the softest I’ve ever seen. Worst thing is the oysters. It is listed as daily special, but 5 out of 6 has that kind of smell indicating that it is just about to go bad. They still serve it as if they were daily fresh and they add chili pepper source on them to try to cover the smell! The only thing positive is their descent selection of sake. They are imported from Japan.
My wife and I were visiting from out of town and staying at. Nearby hotel when we found Maru sushi. We were both excited to eat because it was a long day of traveling. We each ordered an entree, I ordered the Chicken Katsu. Each entree comes with a small salad and miso soup which I ate. Then my chicken came out with a bowl of rice, immediately I smelled something off like there was rotten fish or something. I took and bite and it tasted very off. I had my wife try a sample and we agreed it was no good. We had the waiter come over and told her it was bad, so she said she would remove it from the bill. I didn’t order anything else because I was in a time crunch. When the bill arrives, the chicken itself is removed, but they were trying to charge me for the rice bowl I never touched, the salad and miso soup. Now I did have tue salad and miso soup, not knowing the chicken would be bad. We had the soft spoken waitress come back over, who got the manager for us. We asked the manager why charge for the rice bowl I never touched and the other items not knowing the chicken would be bad. We felt that on principle that the entire entree should have been removed because of the rotten chicken. She refused at first because she said that it was our opinion that the chicken was rotten. We argued back that serving us bad chicken was wrong and that the entire entree should have been taken off the bill. After some loud words, the manager does the right thing and removed the soup, salad and rice. It’s the principle of the fact that if I had that chicken, I may have gotten deathly ill. For chicken to smell like that, it would have to be sitting at room temperature for over 24 hours. That’s not acceptable and it can cost someone’s life in the end.

I ordered the spicy chirashi for take out today. The sashimi was not fresh, they used really cheap ingredients and cheap cuts. Even the lettuce the chirashi was served with was wilting. The “spicy sauce” tasted bad, and when I picked up my order the waitress was grumpy about providing me with soy sauce because she said there was already hot sauce provided. I was not given any wasabi. The worst part is that I immediately came down with awful stomach cramps and a bad case of diarrhea after eating my lunch. All this for a $40 lunch. Worst meal ever. Do not dine here.
