Slanted Door has been serving up delicious healthful Vietnamese food for a long time in the Bay Area. Very happy to report that new location maintain the same consistency - whether it is classics like spring or imperial rolls, crab vermicelli, shaking beef, or newer dishes like Chinese style duck, oysters, roast salmon, and pork chop. Service is warm and attentive, friendly and professional at the same time.

Gluten free Imperial rolls was a winner! We could have just had a few orders of it and call it a night! Of course I forgot to take a picture of it. Mark gave great service!

Love the food here. The imperial rolls and spring rolls are good that we finished so fast. Chicken claypot is tasty 😋 Baked black cod is superb and definitely worth trying. Staff is friendly and nice. Definitely will be back.

The food at brunch was as delicious as we remembered from our past Slanted Door meals at SF Ferry Building. Papaya salad was light and refreshing, accented with rau ram. We went back for dinner service to try the scrumptious 10- day dry-aged salted wood roasted duck perfected by the late Chef Charles Phan. The highlight of the meal was meeting the folks who make the restaurant special: Debbie Phan (Chef Phan’s sister who graciously suggested just the right amount of lime juice to dab onto the shaking beef dish to bring it to the next level and told me about the special duck), server Mark (who recommended the yummy roast chicken topped with sautéed scallions and served with mushroom chicken fat rice), current Chef (sorry didn’t catch his name) whose sautéed fresh bok choy kissed with garlic and soy sauce plus shiitake mushrooms was simple yet full of umami, and the rest of the staff who helped make our meal special. I usually find cheesecake heavy but the Basque cheesecake with apple oat crumble was light yet creamy and delicious! Ms. Phan graciously poured a fruity Pinot Noir for hubby and me that perfectly complemented the duck! Please note photo only shows a nibbling portion of duck because we had just finished our late lunch not so long ago, so we saved most of the duck to eat later. It was easy for us to talk and the music was perfect: greatest hits from Natalie and Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong. It’s unfortunate that we don’t live nearby because I’d happily eat my meals here several times a week!

Visited to celebrate a birthday. The food is expensive but very delicious. Our party thought the ingredients were really high quality. We especially enjoyed the fish, chicken clay pot, and appetizers such as papaya salad and spring rolls. The restaurant is very big and a great place for special occasions. Our waitress was really nice and helpful so service was exceptional.

I’ve been a Slanted Door fan since their days at the San Francisco Ferry Building. The San Ramon location is consistent in their food, quality and service. Nothing better than having some of the staples such as the imperial rolls, cellophane crab noodles and shaking beef. But they also introduce new items on the menu so there’s a good circulation of items to try! I also appreciate how they want to get to know you. It speaks to the family business the chef, Charles Phan, built from a small restaurant on Valencia Street. You’ll realize many are an extension of his family and the long-time colleagues/employees are committed to their loyal customers and to the business. The Happy Hour options are a must-try as well. First two photos are the Happy Hour appetizers that vary from $8-10.

This place is awesome. If you are in the mood for Asian style food with some extra delicious fusion touches , this is the right place. Vietnamese flavours, served family style, great drinks, an extensive wine and bourbon selection, coupled with fantastically friendly, helpful servers will make this dining experience one to remember. Head to bed after dinner feeling satisfied that you did something nice for yourself today!! 10 out of 10 would eat here again.

My friends and I recently enjoyed a group lunch at Slanted Door in San Ramon. The restaurant boasts a convenient location within a shopping center. We tried many of their lunch dishes, and none of them disappointed! A standout dish was their signature Shaking Beef. While the price might seem a bit high, it's definitely worth trying for the exceptional flavor and quality. Additionally, the pho noodle soup deserves high praise – some of the best we've had. We made a reservation beforehand, which turned out to be unnecessary as the restaurant wasn't particularly crowded during the time we visited. However, it's worth noting that parking at Bishop Garage can get tricky on Saturday mornings when the farmer's market is in full swing. We circled the top floor of Bishop Garage a few times before finding a spot. Overall, we had a fantastic lunch experience at Slanted Door. The delicious food and inviting atmosphere make it a place we'll definitely revisit, especially to explore their dinner menu.

The Slanted Door in San Ramon proved to be a memorable culinary journey, combining mouthwatering dishes with exceptional service. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere of warm hospitality was palpable. Kristen, our knowledgeable server, expertly navigated us through the appetizing starters, each recommendation bursting with unique and tantalizing flavors. In the midst of this delightful gastronomic experience, a unique spectacle caught my attention – a bottle of Jacob Poli L’arzente Brandy. With its slender, elongated neck, petite base, and an intriguing jewel (see attached photo), it stood as an uncommon artifact in the typical restaurant scene. Noticing my curiosity and the photos I was taking, Daniel, exhibiting exemplary customer service, paused his tasks to engage in my interest. He took the time to ensure I had all the information about this unique brandy, adding a personal touch to the entire dining experience. The Imperial Rolls were an absolute delight, their crunch perfectly complemented by a delectable dipping sauce. Yet, it was the Jicama Salad that ultimately stole the show. Its perfect bite and fresh flavors made it an undeniable highlight of the day. The Slanted Door in San Ramon is a gem in the culinary world, offering not just fantastic food, but also an exceptionally attentive service. The personal attention from the staff, especially Daniel’s, made our visit feel special and tailored. I wholeheartedly recommend this establishment to any food lover seeking an elevated dining experience. July 2023 update: We had the oppurtunity to sit on the bar and talk with an amazing mixologist named Ricardo, we later found out that he’s Daniel’s brother! 🫶😊 I’m a huge daiquiri fan and so he made me a Bumble Bee and it was perfectly balanced with the two different rums, little egg white froth, cherry design on top, there were other ingredients in it but after two of those just remember the fun time and not the recipe! Thanks to the GM Bobby and to Ricardo for making our stay extra special, we will be back soon!!

We came in today with a special request, and Ciara and Francisco went above and beyond to make it happen. Their kindness and willingness to accommodate us truly made our day. This is the kind of service that defines the Slanted Door brand—warm, thoughtful, and genuinely caring. So grateful they were working today. Left with full hearts and big smiles. Thank you!

The staff is great and the food even better. The appetizers are so good, the crispy spring rolls are everything. The sauces are just amazing. The lamb includes huge piece, just perfectly cooked with that wood flavor. Good and delicious mocktails as well. We loved it and can't wait to go back!

I’ve been eating at The Slanted Door San Ramon for years now, and it never stops delivering. I grew up going to the original SF location, so Slanted Door has always been deeply nostalgic for me, and the San Ramon outpost absolutely holds up. The Dungeness crab noodles are still unreal and immediately take me back to being a teenager, ordering them again and again and never getting tired of it. Beyond the food, the service here really stands out. The team is polished, warm, and incredibly responsive, you always feel taken care of without things ever feeling stiff or overdone. It’s comforting (and impressive) to see a place maintain this level of consistency and hospitality across locations. A classic for a reason, and one I’ll keep coming back to.

Modern Vietnamese with clean, bright flavors. The shaking beef was tender and perfectly seasoned, and the spring rolls tasted super fresh. Stylish but not stiff, with a steady buzz in the dining room. Feels polished without losing personality.

This Slanted Door location has quite a large dining room and outdoor patio space in the upscale Bishop’s Ranch shopping center in San Ramon. Blonde wood floors, marble tabletops, and black accents throughout. Definitely a good spot for celebrations, in addition to simply enjoying a nice dinner out. My husband and I dined with two friends, sharing six dishes family style between us—family style is the preferred method of ordering here. We started with the daikon rice cakes, which were one of the highlights of the meal for me! The texture was impressive: somewhat creamy, somewhat spongy, with the light pepperiness of the daikon radish. Another favorite for me was the wood-roasted and dry-aged duck. The duck was cooked to perfection, offering a bit of crunch with each bite of skin and a milder-than-most gaminess to the meat. Nice accompanying hoisin sauce as well. I also thought the shaking beef, served with a vibrant lime sauce, was delicious. Shaking beef has been a favorite of mine since I first tried it at Golden Garlic on the Peninsula years ago. I love how a good crust can seal in great prime rib flavor with every bite, and the Slanted Door’s was no exception. We also shared the stir-fried bok choy, cellophane noodles with gulf shrimp and Dungeness crab, and the shrimp and pork imperial rolls. Those were all good, but not as notable as the previous dishes. The cocktails were expertly made, offering unique versions on classic tiki cocktails, and it takes skilled bartenders to pull that off well. My Singapore Sling—Glendalough gin, benedictine, cherry heering, cointreau, fresh pressed pineapple, lime, angostura bitters—was a delight, and everyone enjoyed their first round picks. It did take a while for our waiter to come by, but he was an excellent server for the rest of our meal, making some recommendations and advising us on how much food to order.

Our first visit in San Ramon. The city center was amazing. We got to experience our di ner with no wait. Service was fantastic. We had a calamari, a shaking beef and a vegetarian meal. All that ate we happy. The shaking beef is normally served medium rare, so if this is not your thing, make sure to ask for it to be prepared to your liking. Seemed a little pricey for this style food, but it was good and we had a great time.

The ambiance was great, with high ceilings and glass walls. However that didn't justify the marked up prices of the food. The highlight of the meal was the daicon cake and the duck. One of the best duck we've had, super tender and juicy. The daicon cake was moist and full of umami. The rest of the dishes were mediocre. The ribeye was average and slightly in the dry side. The shaken beef was good, but did not wow us away with the price point. The worst dish of the day was the glass noodles... Rather bland and overcooked. The biggest downfall is the speed of service. Our server was nice but unfortunately very slow. We were waiting around in between the food and the check for almost 30 minutes. The 20 percent auto addition of gratuity was not a pleasant surprise either. In general, I really wanted to like the place since I have been wanting to try the place since they opened. But for the price of almost $300 for 4 people, there are better options at city center.

The good - servers speaks nicely and are smily Not so stellar- -Charge 20% service automatically on bill but no where in the menu says so. But server made sure to say welcome to add more on top. Manager said it’s mandatory 20%. -Made reservations yet when arrived the table was not ready and my guests were standing around. Host was suggesting sit my group of 5pp in a table of 4 and she just add a chair, when clearly there is plenty of space elsewhere for proper seating by joining tables. -Server took plates away and I had to rest my chop stick and fork on my water glass! How awkward for a suppose high end place! No napkins or fresh plates to assist. -Food was well made but not particularly impressive. For my Pho, the basil provided had black bruises all over. Not fresh. -Lunch menu was limited and not impressive. Nothing too creative. Traditional Vietnamese items seems very similar to what offered in neighborhood Vietnamese restaurants except the ambiance better. I guess I went to slanted, the original San Francisco branch, and after looking at their website and Google review for San Ramon branch I had high expectations for the food and service, however at the end the experience fell short from advertised. Nevertheless, it’s not entirely bad but not worth me going again. For lunch expect US40+/person.

I found myself in Sam Ramon this weekend and stopped in with friends. The service was excellent. I really like their patio setup. For starts we had the spring rolls, by far the best dish. We shared the Black cod and steak. The steak was ok, I did enjoy the smokey notes from the grill. The Cod was not a keeper. Sides are extra so we got the eggplant. This dish surprised me, but in a good way. Try the first Riesling on the menu from New York you will not be disappointed. Overall. The meal was nice, made better by the service and the Update NY wine. But I was not impressed by the food. The food was good, but not great. Protip! There is a mandatory 20% tip included in your bill. We had excellent service from each staff member we encountered, so worth it. But you are going to pay it regardless.

I have been waiting to try this place since it opened. I really like the the one in SF so I made a reservation for 4 when it opened at 5:30 for dinner. If you don't like to wait, making a reservation is recommended since people are still curious about this place. The atmosphere is nice but gets pretty loud when it is crowded. Slanted Door serves sort of like a family style. It's not the family style that I had in mind which restaurants should really adopted. The tables are too small to have all the food out at the same time so they serve the dishes based on the course from appetizer to entrees. I rather have all the food out and have a real family dinner so everyone can chow down while having a good conversation. Why the 2 stars? Well, I give the stars to the waiter and the bus lady who were very nice and helpful. The food, on the other hand, is not up to par given how much they charge. Actually, the food is not even as good as some very affordable Asian restaurants. I don't think the people who gave good ratings tried other cheaper Asian restaurants in the Bay Area. We got the Hue Dumpling, BBQ pork spare ribs, shaking beef (their signature), whole fish, and long string beans with fried garlic. - The spare ribs were too salty and that made the tangy taste of the BBQ sauce unpleasant. - Shaking beef cubes were very rubbery. The cubes were too big to be bite size so cutting the large rubbery cubes was a pain. Imagine eating that. I can make beef cutes more tender and juicy with my eyes closed. This was very disappointing for $41! - Whole fish is a little better but dry maybe because it is baked to give it smokey favor. Didn't get that smokey taste. I rather have a fresh steamed fish. Go to a nice Chinese seafood restaurant and you'll know what I mean. Be careful of the fish bones if you are not used to picking them out. - long beans could also be better. Didn't have that cooked crunchy texture you normally expect. Expect to pay a premium for this especially when you add the drinks. Even if the food is good, it's not a place for me to frequent often. A party of 4 will cost you around $200. I didn't even order the drinks.

I strong recommend against this restaurant. The decor is lackluster and the food and drinks are way too expensive for what they offer. The portions are small and lack any real flavor depth. The *taxable* mandatory service charge is also absurd considering how unimpressive the service was.

D
Dipankar Mitra

Slanted Door in San Ramon was surprisingly average-to-bad for me. The “imperial rolls” were OK, but lacked any flavor. The pork claypot was fine but overly sweetened. The eggplant was completely bland and kinda undercooked. This would have been fine if they were not charging over-the-top prices (even for the Bay Area), but at these prices, it’s definitely a 1 star.
