One of my go-to places. Never had a bad meal there.
Nice neighborhood vibe. You get what is shown and the food is tasty.
I only have good things to say about this place. Never ever had a bad meal from here. The service is beyond outstanding, they are always so friendly. I love the wings here. Definitely try eating here if you can, you will love it!
Great service, perfect german sausages 👏great team working there
Great neighborhood establishment with great German Beer and authentic food.
Very good food. Felt like a piece of Germany.
Came back here for the first time in years, and the food is still as amazing as I remembered, if not better! Came here for brunch and the place wasn't busy however the service was lacking. We sat outdoor, and we felt unattended. Told one server to get us a to-go box, the server immediately forgot, and we had to flad another server to help us. Other than that, the food made up for the lack of service. Will still go back for the bratwursts and the German mac n cheese spaetzle!
Amazing sausages, pretzels, and real german beers. So happy we have this spot near us. Super reasonable prices, nice big beers, kind staff. Love this place!!!
Excellent veal schnitzel, good variety of wursts and sides. Soft cheese with pretzel bread appetizer was delicious! Everything hit the spot and service was friendly and good. You will not leave hungry.
We’ve been to Max Bratwurst before but it had been a while. On this particular night, after leaving a restaurant in Manhattan without eating due to awful, arrogant service (check my other reviews if you’re curious), Max came through to salvage the night. It’s unpretentious, the service is welcoming, the food is tasty and inexpensive, and the beers are good. It’s always a strong go-to.
They deliver tasty dishes with genuinely helpful service. You'll appreciate the comfortable, clean setting and extremely kind team. The staff balances attractiveness with genuine friendliness. They serve big helpings and the salad was vibrant and fresh. This restaurant will definitely see me again.
This restaurant is valuable to me and I'll visit repeatedly. The bills at Max Bratwurst und Bier are fair for where it's situated. They serve fresh, tasty meals with plenty of options. We received good service and the employee was very attentive. Thank you. I wish I lived nearby to visit more often.
Came here after a ball game. Everything was great. Our server recommended a few beers based on taste preference and he was spot on. Delicious food, shareable portions. Our table of 4 had a wonderful time!
Really one of the best customer service experiences I’ve had. After explaining I was unfamiliar with German cuisine or their beers, but came to experiment, the young woman was so gracious in helping me choose. In the end my meal was wonderful. I had the andouille brat and the beef brat, delicious. The cucumber salad, nice and fresh, home fries, good. The beer (traditional German one), excellent! All those things and an excellent atmosphere too I’ll eat here again to try the schnitzel
Came here January 8th the chicken schnitzel was great and well cooked. My sides were the potato salad and german mac and cheese which were also very good and tasty. The beer i had was the pure cider possmann and it was very good. It tasted like pure apple juice and I didn’t mind that at all. This is a great german restaurant
quite possibly the only legit Bavarian spot in NYC. great staff, great food, relaxed atmosphere, fair prices.
Excellent Food. Top notch service. Welcoming atmosphere. Great tasting, cold beer. Love this place!
Great takeout order yet again! This is my 3rd time here and again I'm impressed. I have to eat my dinner in my car for work so it's always difficult choosing a food. I ordered the Wurstplatte with Rinderbratwurst, Bierbratwurst mit Kase, Kasespatzle, and Sauerkraut. The presentation for a to go order was surprisingly good, and the taste was even better! Both meats were cooked perfectly and the Kasespatzle was nice and firm. The online ordering was a breeze since pronouncing german words over the phone isn't the easiest. When I got there the food was just being wrapped up and the staff was super friendly. As always, a pleasure eating here. 👍
I'm not a big fan of German food, but my friends love it here. The 10 oz burgers are truly delicious, and the prices are very reasonable. It's a lively place, especially on weekends, and there's great outdoor seating. The waiters are friendly and provide great service. Good food, good service, and great atmosphere.
The waitress that served us made some really good suggestions about what was popular and I ended up getting a combo which came with two delicious brats and a cucumber salad and home fries, when I tell you everything was bomb, everything was bomb. The beer was delicious too!!! Would totally go again.
Nice. Quiet out of the way spot with great beer. And good food.
Absolutely love it here, we visit from Iowa about once a year and this is always the first restaurant we visit. Reasonable and always delicious. Great service. One of the best in nyc as far as we’re concerned.
Went there on a chilly rainy dull weekday night and oh boy did the place lift up my mood! 😋 A large beer selection (plus ciders and wines) at a great price and hearty German food. My husband and I had a big appetite and ordered a giant pretzel with cheese, 3 different bratwursts with sauerkraut, purple cabbage and a side of potato salad. By the end of our sumptuous meal we were so full that we almost had to be rolled out. All staff were very kind and professional and gave us excellent recommendations. I would go back just for their hofbrau original and classic brat (and well, yes their potato salad too).
Such a great and wonderful place! Being Swiss and having grown up in Germany 🇩🇪, I can say that this place is quite authentic and provides really good German food and beer. The service is really great, it’s quiet and a great regular go-to spot for dinner and drinks. Can highly recommend, the food is really good and authentic, which is very important to me when it comes to food from home. ;-) Thank you, Max! Great job! We love coming here!
This place has extensive online presence. The bill stays low while the food portions don't. The menu offers predictable satisfaction. Their staff showed flexibility, offered assistance and maintained warmth. If you enjoy surprising your taste buds, try this place.
10/10 would recommend. Will & the cook (I can’t remember his name it began with a B... I think lol) were amazing. Food was absolutely delicious. Will was a great, attentive & fun waiter. They both made our night filled with laughs & great food. I’ve recommended this place to several people since then. Truly memorable! (Not really memorable if you drink the boot tho LOL). Nonetheless, don’t think twice, just go! It was a great spot to switch up the usual picks of food, which is what my friends & I wanted and it didn’t disappoint.
They recently changed the menu and I feel like there's a greater variety now. We had the pulled pork sandwich (huge and greasy--delicious) and chicken schnitzel with mashed potatoes (classic and great). People always seem to be having a great time eating there (though we ate outside today and a delusional man came through talking nonsense and bugging people). We've been many times and we'll return many more
The overall quality here is simply outstanding. Max Bratwurst und Bier excels in customer attention and service. Their menu items feature impressive flavors. Max Bratwurst und Bier surprises with seasonal specialties. Frankly speaking, this restaurant earns my praise, and it'll earn yours.
It was my first time coming here and first time trying German food ! amazing I loved it! The Kartoffelpuffer were the best , it tasted so good ! I also got the “Hahnchenschnitzel” it was great vibe and so full filling 🥰🥰 So guys don’t sleep on this ! Ya should definitely go & try their food it buss😋😋😋
Every dish shows care and skill in preparation. Their offerings maintain quality and the place sits where I need it. I consider some staff members to be close friends now. The preparation respected each ingredient. I'm giving you my unfiltered take - this spot is fantastic.
Great beer and generous portions! I love this place for some great German food. Their schnitzel, sausages, sauerkraut, and cucumber salad are a must! The prices are great and you don't have to break the bank by getting a good meal and some beer.
The location caught my eye first, then the incredible service won my heart. The place strikes the perfect balance. This place serves clearly distinguished food. Employees create a warmly welcoming environment. I felt satisfied with all aspects.
So, so, so many different restaurants and cuisines in Astoria, and yet my wife and I land here monthly for a date night liter of lager and excellent Deutsche Küche (traditional German). Smallish space (added seats on the sidewalk in warmer months) so it will get busy. But if you come off hours or shoulder dining times, you'll likely wait just a few minutes for a table.
If you're craving authentic German food, look no further! This place is a total gem. The potato pancakes are seriously out of this world – perfectly crispy and flavorful. Beyond the food, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the service is outstanding. I can't recommend this restaurant enough. It's a must-try for anyone looking for a phenomenal German dining experience!
The staff let me in early and as a result I got to try several beers, my favorite being the Kölsch. I highly recommend going here for a meal or at least to eat while drinking. The schnitzel is very airy and light, a classic schnitzel. The pretzels are very solid; in fact all their bread is great. They also have a fantastic goulash if you can get it. Actually I recommend the goulash the most.
This places deserves a Michelin star! Impeccable service, consistently delicious traditional German dishes and a great selection of bier. Currently dining with my partner and we are having an amazing time. The veal schnitzel and brat plates are out of this world and the sides! The sides are just *chef kiss* the mashed potatoes, oil and vinegar potato salad, cucumber and dill salad and sourkraut is exactly what you think they’ll be. Vielen Dank n Prost!
This place is a go-to for me. The food is absolutely delicious and the beer is great (and well priced)! If I have any visitors in town, I always bring them here for a good meal!
Wonderful little spot in the area. I have only visited once but the food was great and the beer selection is nice. The atmosphere is sporty and a bit loud. The service was spotty, but I arrived during a shift change right before dinner and it took us a few minutes to receive the menu. I also think this is the best priced German place compared with other Queens longstays like Zum Stammich and Manor Octoberfest.
They got tons of brats! The sauerkraut has bits of speck, the potato options cover all varieties from mashed to fried to salad! And the schnitzel comes as a regular entree or a BLT sandwich! What? All I know is I liked what I had and there is lots more to try! Not to mention they have ample outdoors seating! Can’t go wrong with bratwurst and beer on a hot sunny day!
A Hidden Gem in Astoria – Max Bratwurst und Bier We had a great experience dining at Max Bratwurst und Bier. The servers were incredibly accommodating and even offered beer samples to help us choose the perfect pint—which was such a thoughtful touch and made us feel welcome right away. The menu had a variety of bratwurst flavors, and we tried the beef, jalapeño and cheddar, beer and cheese, and veal. Each one was delicious, but the beer and cheese brat stood out as a clear favorite—flavorful, juicy, and paired perfectly with our drinks. On the server's recommendation, we also ordered the mac and cheese (with bacon added), and it absolutely hit the spot. Creamy, rich, and indulgent—just the way comfort food should be. There's plenty of outdoor seating, which is a big plus, especially for casual hangouts or group get-togethers. We'll definitely be back to explore more of their menu. Another wonderful spot in Astoria worth visiting!
This place has become one of our favorites near our home. Whenever we want to enjoy good sausages, great burgers, desserts, or beer, this is where we like to go. The chicken sausages are amazing, and the bread is perfect for easy eating. I love to add onions and sweet peppers. This time, I had red cabbage, some fries, a beer, and their incredible Apfelstrudel for dessert. If you're looking for a place to relax and feel safe, even when others are enjoying their beers, you should definitely come here. It's a family-friendly environment, and we always go with our child or take our family members who are visiting us. Even though it is not easy to find a parking spot, it is worth the effort to find a place. Cheers!
Visited during game 6, the first half. I got a burger, fries, Diet Coke and a cake. The burger was so big and good although they use Kraft singles which are mid. The fries were absolutely delicious, and their Diet Coke was average with the canned. The real seller was the atmosphere. Was nice and loud during the big game, if I could give it 6 stars I would. Overall peak.
From the moment we stepped into Max Bratwurst und Bier Astoria, we knew we were in for a treat. The atmosphere was just perfect – a wonderful blend of cozy and lively, making it a great spot for a relaxed evening. Our server was incredibly friendly and attentive, offering helpful recommendations and ensuring we had everything we needed throughout our meal. We decided to try a few different items and were absolutely blown away. The mixed platter was a fantastic way to sample a variety of their offerings, and each component was bursting with flavor. The honey baked Brie was an absolute standout – creamy, sweet, and utterly divine. The soft pretzel was perfectly baked, with a lovely chewy texture and just the right amount of salt, and the accompanying mustard was excellent. Even the simple cucumber salad was fresh and refreshing, providing a nice counterpoint to the richer dishes. Honestly, every single dish we ordered exceeded our expectations. The quality of the ingredients was evident, and the care taken in the preparation shone through. It's clear that Max Bratwurst und Bier Astoria pays attention to the details, both in their food and their service. We left feeling completely satisfied and are already looking forward to our next visit. If you're looking for delicious food, great service, and a wonderful atmosphere, look no further than Max Bratwurst und Bier Astoria! Highly, highly recommended.
I recently dined at Max, and it was an incredible experience! I had the Austrian burger, mashed potatoes, and potato soup, and I absolutely loved every bite. The flavors were fantastic, and everything tasted fresh and homemade. The staff were attentive and friendly. The European vibe and atmosphere really set the mood for a delightful evening. Highly recommend!
Authentic vibe and people, great spot to take the family or catch up with friends. Florian and Lilia are awesome, started us with a round of favorite brews - Radeberger pils and Hofbrau lager and also introduced us to a delicious Apple Strudel for dessert. Perfect with Hofbrau dunkel. They also have 1 and 2-liter boots for the extra thirsty! The Max Platter is amazing, choice of 4 brats and came loaded with extra goodies and topped with eggs!! Perfect as a huge breakfast platter for 4. Very lucky find, will be back for more!
Great place to sit, watch some sports, connect with friends, and enjoy some great German beers. Plenty of seating indoors and outdoors. TV’s all around to catch the game/match of the hour. During the day - you can stroll in with friends for a hearty meal and drink, or you can bring your work and be productive outside with full service. At night, the vibes are especially lively with plentiful outdoor seating. Beers are great, fairly priced The food is also spectacular! The side of red cabbage is a 100% winner. Love to come here!
Our waitress was hot and tired and it showed! Beer was good- you can't go wrong selling radeberger liters. Food was nice.
This is a great spot - fun assortment of German food (and some random items as well), the vibe is a small and relax beer hall with sidewalk cafe seating. Friendly service and decent prices. I tried the rattlesnake and pork bratwurst on a pretzel bun - it was pretty good, chewy, meaty and satisfying - I wouldn't have know there was snake in there at all. I would definitely come eat here again!
Love this place. Perfectly cooked bratwurst in a variety of flavours (my fav is the mildly spiced alligator brat, and also the plump & savory farmers bratwurst) served on delicious rolls that are the epitome of tradition : crusty on the outside & fluffy on the inside. Also, really nice side dishes of sauerkraut (servrd hot & seasoned with caraway) and cold cabbage salad (thinly sliced & lightly seasoned with oil, vinegar, salt & pepper). Good place to sit & talk with friends over some German beers, too. Thankfully music not too loud.
I was very excited to visit this restaurant with my boyfriend after walking by a few months ago. We both got the two sausages and two sides entree as well as the cambert cheese and fruit appetizer. He ordered the pork and jalapeno sausage and the rattlesnake sausage with potato salad and homefries. The pork sausage was well balanced with a bit of heat from the jalapeno. But the rattlesnake sausage was a smidge disappointing. The potato salad was slightly acidic from pickling which was pleasantly surprising. I ordered the beef sausage and the hot pork sausage with red cabbage and fries on the side. The hot pork sausage is very spicy but delicious and the cabbage was nicely pickled. The star of the evening was the appetizer however! If you're a cheese fan you have to try it~ savory, sweet, salty, perfection. Mmmm :) Sadly, I had to minus a star from our rating because there was a bug on our table. Also we were not offered any water (the hot sausage is really hot).
The food was really good, once I got it. The 4 other people at my table received their food about 40 minutes before I did. I had to ask two servers passing by for an update and I only ordered a sandwich with no modifications. Finding our server seemed like a struggle most of the evening. No one checked to see if we had empty drinks and getting the check at the end took quite the effort and we had to walk inside to ask anyone for it so we could pay. The female servers were hustling and actually helped us receive the check, but the males couldn't seem to multitask well.
Looking for a taste of Germany? You will find it here in Astoria, Queens. We started with a soft salty pretzel accompanied with Obatzda …. a Bavarian cheese spread. That cheese spread, topped with a slice of red onion and a chunk of made for a perfect bite. My entree was a crispy, golden pork schnitzel with a creamy mushroom gravy. Paired perfectly with roasted potatoes and bacon – comfort food at its finest. The creamy dill cucumber salad was a refreshing, sweet delight! Friends bratwurst, potatoes and sauerkraut are classic German fare. Dessert for me was a refreshing Heisse Liebe-vanilla ice cream with hot raspberry sauce. The ideal light dessert to end a hearty meal. My friend finished with a moist apple strudel that she declared was out of this world. And she should know as she lived in Germany for a year . It’s not just a meal, it’s an experience. The staff was really friendly and helpful with beer options. We sat in the heated outdoor enclosed area where we were very comfortable. During warmer weather they have a lots of outdoor seating.
So, I went in here, was seated, and a waitress came over to take my order. I ordered a beer and a meal, and the next time the waitress came by my table was when I had to flag her down for the check. No asking if I needed another beer, no asking if things were okay, no nothing. I wanted to get a water, but she was absent. Food was good, and the patrons and vibes were cool, but I just can't give more than three stars to a place like that. I'll probably go back some time, and I'll update, but that was disappointing. Update: I've been back multiple times, and while the service is still not great, it's not as bad as it was that day. If you want attentive servers, this is not the place for you. Food is always very good, though.
I went here excited to try the beers and sausages and left only getting beer. They came quickly to take my order and brought me my beer then sadly forgot to ever come back. I drank a whole liter of beer (30+ mins) before they came back. It’s too bad! It wasn’t busy, most of the tables were open. I’m not going to knock it and I’ll give it another shot this winter maybe and come back and update. The beer was good though! Decently priced too!
When heard about this place, was excited, drove an hour here but not what we expected. We used to live in Europe for 10yrs. and I am a Haxe(pork shank) fan, every time eating in Germany, either Haxe or Schnitzel. The Schnitzel was good here, but the Haxe was disappointing, no crispy skin, and the meat was not tender and wasn't cut off easily. Even the simple potato salad is not quite the German style one. The beer was good. I guess the search continue.
Let me preface this by being upfront that I hate most food from Europe except Portuguese, British, and some French stewed or baked dishes (like coq au vin and cassoulet). As a former heavy smoker and someone who grew up eating spicy food, my taste buds are pretty dulled at this point in life so I tend to only go for spicy cuisines—which German food is not. That said, my wife and I recently moved from one end of 30th Ave to the other and now live about five minutes walk from this place. Also I’ve had about five friends recommend this place. So, when my best friend/former roommate came to visit us from Newark we went here. We ordered three bratwurst plates and a chicken schnitzel along with a pretzel for app. The pretzel was great and the cheese dip reminded me of pimento cheese. Our mileage varied with the main dishes. The chicken schnitzel was surprisingly good; the andouille sausage and chicken sausage were also great (my friend got the veal sausage and loved it though I didn’t try). In terms of side dishes, there was a lot of discrepancy in quality. The cold salads we got (cucumber and white cabbage) were both great. The cucumber was amazing. The hot red cabbage and hot potato salad were also good. The mashed potatoes were super bland and the regular sauerkraut was very meh and one dimensional. The service was honestly not great—especially considering that the restaurant was not crowded. The server would often wander by our table (we sat outside) and not check in at all—we had to yell at her to get her to come to the table—and again it wasn’t crowded. We were one of three outside tables. Also the music was straight up trash. Like a lot of weird dumb chill wave vibes. So, in summary: if you like German food, it really is good (with the exceptions noted in this review) and high quality. However, I would not willingly go back except my parents are coming in a few months and love this kind of underseasoned food so I’ll probably go with them.
I’ve ordered 3 different types of bratwurst the past 3 times I’ve gotten food delivered, but they sent knockwurst each time. I’m done
Very disappointed, I waited 30 minutes for my first beef bratwurst and it came out with sauerkraut, when I ordered red cabbage, then the second sausage came out. It was pork. I literally spent an hour here on one beer and one sandwich which was supposed to have sweet peppers. However, it was yellow green bell pepper. This is not a place I would recommend if you are a sausage enthusiast.
I’ve dined at Max's a few times in the past with my parents, which made this recent experience even more disappointing. I decided to order from them to celebrate my father’s 93rd birthday. I drove 30 minutes specifically because they were the only place around that carried beer from my dad’s hometown in Germany. I thought it would be the perfect touch to celebrate his birthday. Unfortunately, the food did not live up to our expectations and past experience. The Schweinehaxe was dry and hard, edible, but far from enjoyable. The potato pancakes were completely inedible; after one bite, I had to throw them out. The rest of the food was mediocre at best. To make matters worse, an order of German mac and cheese was missing from our takeout. I called the restaurant, and the person I spoke with checked and confirmed that it had not been packed. She offered for me to drive back and pick up the mac and cheese, but I explained that I wasn’t going to drive another 30 minutes for a side dish. She then offered to take my information so I could get it next time I came in. I asked if they could simply credit my card instead, but she said they "don’t do that". What was especially upsetting was the tone of the conversation. They made a mistake and yet seemed irritated by me calling about it.
During my 4th or 5th visit to Max I had the most upsetting experience. Specifically, from the moment we walked in there were whispers stating, “Get them some margaritas and we were not greeted at the door as the other patrons. This comment was especially rude because this establishment solely sells beer. Meanwhile, it was a completely empty restaurant with the exception of one table that was seated. When we were finally greeted by a waitress, she sat us at our table and I asked what kind of cooking oil they use due to a severe allergy of various oils. Since the kitchen and seating area have an open concept one of the staff from the kitchen sarcastically yells out, “We cook with truffle oil.” Ew. The man made sure it was clearly obvious we heard him because he said it 3 times apparently. Unfortunately I wasn’t aware of the first times, but when he said it the last time, he was very loud and disruptive about it. My friend who was with me has the allergy and felt so uncomfortable to the point she didn’t feel safe eating at this establishment. I agreed it was a rather hostile environment and she proceeded to tell me everything she heard after we had left. In such a culturally diverse neighborhood I was shocked at this kind of experience and extremely upset because I have been to this restaurant several times before. This behavior was clearly racially motivated and even felt celebrated, as two Latina woman walk into a restaurant for lunch and are faced with this kind of discrimination. Food is mediocre at best.
I've waited my togo food for almost half an hour. Not only that my fries was soggy and burger was undercooked. Ridiculous. I won't be back again. There are better burgers in Astoria.
I’ve come to this restaura for more than five years and the food is amazing but today was the exception as soon as I came one of the servers threw the menu on my desk which was rude and never had happen to me before, the total was 43 dollars in total I left him 55 when I was leaving the same servant came behind me with a one dollar bill telling me that he didn’t need a one dollar bill in a rude way with attitude I don’t understand what happened I never gave him 1 dollar and if I did he had no reason to be do rude
