I love the Broken Spoke when it has county-western swing bands like Bob Will's Texas Playboys and Billy Mata & The Texas Tradition!!!
Loved this place, loved the attitude, the band was awesome and the people dancing impressive - overall a lot of fun!
We were a party of 4! We enjoyed the live entertainment while eating dinner. Then we went back to the dance hall. There is a cover charge but worth every penny! They had a wonderful line dancing instructor that was funny and really good at teaching. The band was fantastic. The entire evening was fun, priced right and we will return again!!! Highly recommend trying it, you’ll be pleasantly surprised!!
I went here with my wife and stepsons and daughter in law and grandchild, food was good but afterward my wife and I went in to dance and we had an absolute great time. It was a Thursday night in October and the band was awesome we pretty much danced every song until somewhere near 1O or 11 PM Next time we go to Austin we will be sure to go to Broken Spoke though I originated in California and live in Hawaii I was lovin that Country music and feelin right at home. Thank you Broken Spoke
The Broken Spoke is an old Honky-tonk, and when I say old, I mean from the days of the Honky-tonk. When in Austin this is a must see. In the back they have a dance hall, and right outside of that room they have a little museum to check out. I give this place a high rating because it deserves it.
Broken Spoke is so awesome! It takes you back to the classic country music dance scene. Vintage feel and lovely staff! I run sound for the Stateline Band every now and then... and it's always been not only a wonderful experience but so much fun. People of all ages dancing... learning how to dance... dance lessons... then a live band to dance with. So amazing to watch the different walks of life joining in one place to just have fun and enjoy the moment. I love being a part of that! If you're looking for a great live band and a great experience...Stateline will be back on May 17th. I'm looking forward to it very much!
The dance lesson was underwhelming but it was nice to hear from to the owner’s daughter. Check out her story on Netflix’s Queer Eye. The band played all the popular favorites, so even if you don’t dance you can sing along. I love seeing the younger crowd dancing alongside the college crowd and the more senior folks. Great scene!
Really cool place to check out if you're into country music history of Austin. Numerous world famous artists have played here over the years. We didnt stay long enough to stay for food or drinks but the staff was nice enough to let us look around and see the history of the music hall! Just be careful of the parking. It can be a but tricky! Only 1 way in and out.
Terri runs the best group therapy session in town. $10 should be reimbursed by health insurance.
I've been in Austin for 13 years and have always wanted to go to the Broken Spoke, and I am not sure why we didn't do it sooner, especially when we are die-hard country music fans. We went on a Saturday around 7.30pm, and the place was reasonably packed but not as much until about 8pm, before the dance lessons started. The instructor, Terri White, is an amazing lady who made it all fun and easy to learn. I had the best time with my big family that day, and I can't wait to go back again. Some things to know: 1. Entry to the dance hall is $15 per person 2. Drinks are reasonably priced 3. Wear your boots and join in the fun
I had family over from the UK, and we had the most amazing evening here.....the dance teacher is great, she's a little fire cracker and a lot of fun, the band was great....and everyone on the dance floor seems to be enjoying themselves and interacting with each other...such a fun place
We truly enjoyed our visit to Broken Spoke last night! The band that played in the dining room played the good old country we love to listen to. We snacked on some yummy cheese fries with bacon and then afterwards moved into the dancehall where the second band also played great dance music. The dance floor was packed but we were able to navigate it and danced the night away! The beer was cold and the ambiance was just what we hoped for.
Great bar with so much history. Live band was awesome. Only partner dancing but there was a cool crowd so you could find someone to 2-step with. We got there after the lesson but it was still fun.
This was one of the highlights if my time in Texas. As a Northern girl who grew up Country & Western dancing and clogging, this place made me feel at home. Lots of history on the walls. Cover charge was $10.00 and they only accepted cash. Credit cards are ok to purchase drinks/Food with. We didn't eat, but Taylor made sure our Patron Margaritas were flowing without missing a beat! The bonus was getting to meet Mr. White and taking a picture. Would DEFINITELY recommend.
A fun old school dance hall. Great vibe. The band Saturday night played a great selection of 90's music.
I've been coming here since the 80's to hear live music and dance the 2 step and Cotteneyed Joe! Good place for chicken fried steaks too! This ain't no fern bar! Don't forget to checkout the little museum dedicated to all the performers that have played since they opened. James White once gave me a tour of it years ago. RIP Amigo!
The Broken Spoke is the perfect spot for a taste of the true Texas dancehall scene. Classic homestyle meals with huge portions, two-step dance lessons Wed-Sat, and live music every night they're open! Enormous dancehall with seating & tables, perfect for groups & parties. Hardworking, dedicated staff!
I loved the friendly, down to earth vibe here! If you’re easily offended, don’t take the dance lesson. I personally loved it, and I thought Terry was funny and entertaining. Some reviewers commented that she sexually harassed them, lol which is a complete exaggeration. If you’re doing the two step and you stick your butt out too much, she’ll slap it. I was happy that I could bring my 17-year old here and it was family friendly but also had a live band and you could get drinks. Also, the burger was surprisingly delicious! I wasn’t expecting much from a bar type place.
2 step dance lessons were a hoot with Terri White! The band was fantastic and everyone was having the time of their lives. We went with local friends. When in Austin, this is a must to go to! Everyone dances with everyone. Problems are forgotten and you just plain and simple are having fun. Thanks for a great night out in Austin!
This place is unbelievable. Old-fashioned, it’s been there forever. The history is unbelievable. Music is awesome, the food is even better. And the atmosphere is the best in Texas. Highly recommended.
Had a lot of fun at this place! Went to see the incredible Dale Watson at Broken Spoke and it did not disappoint. The people were two-stepping away on the dance floor while the other clients were drinking cold beer and eating good food on the surrounding tables. The staff is lovely and the 'museum' section is fascinating. Highly recommend!
This is a Texas Western bar for sure. Plenty of dance floor, seating, good live music entertainment. This is long time establishment since 1964 I believe. Lively place here for sure, I've been here a few times when visiting friends in the area. I still haven't seen anything like it in Arizona where I live. This ho down country bar for sure, I love it.I don't any problems recommending this place to anyone looking for a good time!!!
Perfect place to experience old Austin charm with 2 step dancing. The atmosphere takes you back to the old school Texas. Lessons are $10 cash only. They are a good start for someone getting started with 2 step dancing. Instructor has a great sense of humor and tries to get everyone involved during the lessons. Do not expect her to spend more than a minute with you if you are stuck learning though. Parking can be tricky but there’s good amount of free parking in the garage right across the street.
Went to the Broken Spoke for a world Famous Chicken Fried Steak. We had the luck of running into James White's son-in -law Mike Peacock. We relived some of our fun times with Mr. White and had some great food to boot. Make sure to always remember the "Spoke." What a special Austin institution and one I will always be grateful to have been alive to enjoy.
Ate at the Broken Spoke in Austin and it was a great night from start to finish. My friends ordered their famous chicken fried steak and they were happy - crispy, filling, and exactly what you want at a classic Texas spot. I went with the chopped steak with grilled onions. I usually have to ask for extra onions anywhere I order chopped steak, but not here - they loaded it up the right way. Tons of grilled onions, great flavor, and a solid, tasty meal. What really makes this place special is the full experience, not just the food. I lived in Austin years ago and don’t clearly remember the food from back then, but I definitely remember the fun nights dancing here. It brought back a lot of good memories. If you like real country music vibes, this is the spot. The live bands make it feel like you’re stepping into a piece of Austin history. I remember dancing to a lot of bands over the years, including their longtime Wednesday night band, People’s Choice. Best plan: go for an early dinner, enjoy a big, wholesome meal, then hit the dance floor and burn those calories off. They often have dance lessons for just a few bucks, which is perfect if you’re new to country dancing or just want a quick refresher. If you want more than just a meal - if you want a true Austin experience with good food, live music, and dancing - go to the Broken Spoke. Come hungry, stay for the music, and leave with that “only in Austin” kind of smile.
I'm originally from Scotland, so country culture in the U.S is wonderful to me - and there's nothing quite like the Broken Spoke to experience it in Austin; I love two-stepping here with my Texan S.O! From the live band and great music, to the excellent dancers and original decor, there's nothing I don't like! One of the most remarkable things about this place is the range of people in one room including older cowboys and college age couples, all dancing and enjoying this Texas institution ❤️
We went for the 2 step class ... 5 of my friends. We had a great time. The instructions was very easy and no intimidating at all if youre nervous about that kind of thing. Do bring cash for entrance $20 a person... they have an atm if you dont have cash. We ordered nachos and cheese fries. The nachos were great thw fries were okay. The service was nice.
What a fun place! The band was great and the crowd was so varied and so encompassing. I did not know how to two step but was asked to dance and taught how to do it. Such the penultimate Texas experience.
Great Austin establishment. Food is great and the live music is awesome. Lots of musicians have played at The Broken Spoke. They offer dance lesson for a minimal cost. So if you can't two step then step right up an take a lesson. I had a chesseburger for my meal and it was great. Try it when you go.
Stopped in here for some proper Texas honky tonkin' and we weren't disappointed! Beer by the pitcher, dance floor packed and a great live band playing quality country and western - what more could you want? It's exactly what you want from a honky tonk, one of the best nights out I've ever had!
My best and favorite place to visit in Austin, my second home. It’s an actual honky-tonk and not a country bar. It’s a place where fights seldom happen because it’s not about getting drunk and trying to pick up a female. It’s about listening to great Honkey Tonk Music in an atmosphere that takes you back to the 60s and 70s. Nothing’s changed there. They don’t have to try to keep up with trends. It’s tradition. I love that you can respectfully dance with anybody and not offend anybody. Just a great atmosphere with pretty darn good food!
I have had several unforgettable nights here with friends! So get those boots on and let’s two step under the Texas stars at Broken Spoke ❤️ I love this dance hall for its chill and classy vibes. It is also open to all ages which we appreciate. The live country music can’t be beat as well. Can’t wait to return.
We visited last weekend from Alabama and it was our favorite place in Austin. The music, the dancing, and just overall vibe was amazing. Our bartender Kellie not only took great care of us there, but we ran into her a couple days later when I complimented her Broken Spoke hat then realized it was our bartender!! Gotta love it, will be back and would recommend, ask for Kellie!
I’ve been to a number of great Texas dance halls and Honky Tonks. Broken spoke just jumped into my top five all-time favorite! Dance floor is nice size with a view from all of the tables. You can dance right up to the stage and it is everyone from a tourist to a real Texas two stepper. The place literally drips with history. Awesome experience. I just felt like I time traveled back to the good old days.
Such a fun place! We did the 8-9pm dance lessons with Terry and she was absolutely amazing, such a funny character, guarantee you’ll have a great time. I would recommend going a little earlier than 7:45 to make sure you get a spot in the lesson, and beware that they only take cash!!! After the dance lessons we stayed and got to listen and dance to live music which made this a 10/10 experience!
So much fun, we went early for the class- $15 cover to get in (Cash only) and $20 bucks a person for the class. The instructor was boisterous and entertaining for sure! This is a historical building with rich history of the country music! You can bring teens to the dance class. I heard the food is great particularly the country fried chicken, but I didn’t get a chance to try it, next time for sure, because I’m definitely going back!
Had my wife's surprise bday party here and they were awesome! GM answered my emails and the young lady, sorry can't remember her name, but she walked me though the process, answered my questions and even lent a hand to help me make it special for the wife. BBQ was great and from what I heard from our guest, 20 ppl btw, there meals were good as well. Live music was awesome in the dining area and dance hall. Didn't give them 5 stars only bc the venue is small overall and in the nicest way possible, it is out dated which of course is been there forever but needless to say it needs a refresh. Last thing is the crowd was chaos on the dance floor lol, just being picky since I spent my high school years in south Texas honkytonks. Overall my family and the whole group were very happy and we had a great time! BIG THANK YOU TO THE CREW!!!!
There are several "iconic" places in Austin, but probably none of them rely on being "Iconic" as a reason to visit as The Broken Spoke. The place is a dump. Everything looks broken. It smells like moldy spilled beer. They charge a $10 cover with an optional $15 "dance lesson" fee. The "dance lessons" entail a 60+yr old "instructor" mostly telling lame jokes in between barking vague instructions to 50 people simultaneously - for about 40 minutes. Then the blue haired red neck band "Wagoneers" eventually introduce themselves and begin playing the most genuine "honky tonk," "Texas swing", music you'll hear anywhere, and within minutes, it all makes sense. You just can't help but kick back, smile and enjoy the place, and the music, and realize that both may not last forever.
40 years I've been coming here, a great spot for western, country music and dancing. However the new dance teacher isn't hospitable, disparages people, and makes racist comments about how they look. Save yourself $10 and learn two step on YouTube then show up at 9pm for great live music and a great dance community.
If you are visiting Austin for the first time, this place is a must stop. If you’re on a girls trip looking for handsome horse riding cowboys, you won’t find any here, because the majority of attendees are tourists, but what you will find is outstanding music by Alvin Crow and band, lots of great dancing and people watching. There are also a few regulars that like to put on a show too! I visited this place twice and it doesn’t get old.
This place is an experience and a must go to if you are in Austin. The fact the establishment has been in business for the length of time is a success story in itself. The food is great and the staff very friendly and accommodating. Con: parking can be tight but you will figure it out or maybe get lucky and have a spot available in front.
Went for the first time tonight. It's a total gem!! Very old school feel, lots of history to see in all of the photos. Definitely not a modern place if that's what youre looking for, but that's what gives it it's charm! Small dance floor so people are constantly running into people, but there's nowhere to grow, so it is what it is, and everyone does just fine. The floor is concrete which is good because it's all even and provides a good dancing surface. I don't feel that there's enough room on the dance floor for some of the people doing tricks and dips with a leg in the air, but that's just me. I was waiting for someone to get a boot to the face/head. One thing I disliked was the people standing around blocking the view if you were sitting at a table like we were. I was watching everyone dance and a group of people came and stood right in front of me. I would definitely come again though and look forward to doing so. I would go super early next time though because parking was very difficult due to being such a small land footprint. Hard because I know there isnt much anyone can do about it, so just go early and enjoy a taste of Texas!!! 😁
They get great artists and the floor is one of the largest and most respected in Austin. Great place to see some good dancing and if you dance, this is a floor that actually travels, unlike almost all others in Austin. The chicken fried steak may be the best in Austin as well. Service is a bit hit or miss, but always a great time.
It is definitely unique, I enjoyed the music, the crowd it was amazing. If you are above 6 feet tall, be careful the ceiling is bit uneven just like floor. If you are consuming alcohol, I suggest you open a tab. Very unsolicited way of tracking your consumption. I have to say my experience with their was not a good one.
Broken Spoke is a classic Austin dance house with a heavy emphasis on classic. The inside is very historical and somehow shares the same feeling as a dive bar but not as divey. It definitely feels like there’s a lot of culture and history once you step in there. Dancing lessons were $10 and worth it to learn Intro to Two Stepping. The instructor was funny and it was a great way to kick off the evening. Drinks were cheap and the lines move fast (tip: the bar has a front and sides where you can get a drink faster). Drinks were a bit strong but hey, it’s Texas. The dancehall isn’t too crowded and was very much enjoyable with everyone just being happy and dancing. The live music was phenomenal playing a mix of classic country and slow music tunes. The only downside of the evening was the very strange and uncomfortable bathrooms which do rob you a bit of privacy but that doesn’t seem like something too concerning when you are where you are. At the end of the day, Broken Spoke is such a fantastic example of Old Austin’s culture and is a great experience to partake in. We highly recommend it for anyone wanting to two and step and get a little wobbly while doing so. Please note it’s impossible to park in the lot, so expect to find parking elsewhere.
Poor service, in fact rude. Understaffed. Food is OK and fairly priced. The so call Two Step clas s was a joke. Never again
Unfortunately, my visit to the Broken Spoke was not one I’d write home about. The service experience set a negative tone — both the waitstaff and bar staff were unnecessarily rude, which made the atm…
Came for the dance lessons and what a waste of time. Paid for an hour and got just over 40 minutes. All we were taught as to shuffle side to side and then danced to one song and it was different move…
Living on its past. So called 2 step class is little more than a slap stick comedy show. Bar staff over worked which may account for their rudeness. Food OK. Prices good. I would not go back.
Famous country music dance hall; there is a good video on its history available on Prime Video. All the country greats have played here. But as a dance hall they seem to have changed format in the back room, the group they had on Saturday March 15 was playing at a deafening volume, probably 135 dB or more. This seems in tune with the youth of today, who love anything LOUD. But not like the old days in rural Texas. The front room is a restaurant and they have more conservative entertainment during dinner hours. Good food and reasonable prices in front.
Visited for dinner after a conference. I was not impressed with the place. There was a lot of dust and spiderwebs everywhere in the area they sat us on. Most of us ended up with an allergy. The food was good but we couldn't even stay for the dance lessons because of all the dust and weird humidity smell.
We used to frequent the Broken Spoke when we were younger and it has changed. The service was slow and food was not as good as it used to be. Drinks a little pricey. Band was great.
They should clarify or disclose that from 8 to 9 is two step lessons on their website.wasted our time listening to crude unfunny jokes…we wanted to hear some country music. But the happy hour and tunes before in the dining room was exactly as advertised. The memorabilia and photos were great.
Was a great place, currently not all that great. The restaurant was so loud we could hardly carry on a conversation. The food was only mediocre. They advertise having the "best chicken fried steak in Texas" - it isn't, in fact I wouldn't rate it in the top 50%. It was very tough, I gave up and left half of mine. My tip, if you're going for the music or to dance, stop somewhere else and eat before you get there. The other issue is the staff. Don't expect warm and friendly, southern hospitality won't be found here. The employees demeanor is more like that of tired frustrated TSA agents. Cold, curt, and short - just short of rude. On the positive side the band, Alvin Crow, was VERY good. The acoustics are good and it's a good dance floor (although a little crowded on a Saturday night).
I really wanted to love this place. We did the dance class on a Wednesday evening & stayed for the band. $10 for dancing, $10 for band cover. We enjoyed the dance lesson. Gal teaching it is funny & very energetic. After the class we ordered the famous country fried steak, fries, baked potato & salad. Salad & potato were fine- nothing special. The chicken fried steak was very tough & hard to chew. The bathrooms are nasty & the place hasn't been dusted for many years. The experience was worth it and I would go back on a busier evening with a better band.
Read the other reviews, its all been said. Its definitely a place to check off if you have never been. The food is lacking, the bathroom situation is a disaster, the creepy old guys hounding all of the women for a dance, the dance instructor is tacky. The best part is at 9pm when you can finally dance with your partner.
It's an interesting place for sure. The dance lessons charge a $15 cash cover FYI. The French fries and fajitas are good. I heard the bathrooms are kind of wild aka they have shower curtains as doors…
The place itself was great but our waitress wasn't very friendly which took away a bit from an otherwise enjoyable evening.
I've gone here for years and the current gentrified version doesn't even compare to what this place used to be. Restaurant in the front and dance hall in the back. Another texas icon lost.
The band is fantastic! DO NOT BOTHER WITH THE DANCE LESSONS, instructor is inappropriately rude, not sassy. The bathroom doors are like particle board and the ceiling is falling in above you. The service is waiting 5 deep to get a beer, no waitresses. They stay busy because it is Austin and people want country music and dance, and the other few places in town are filled with college kids standing on the dance floors. Go to Las Vegas for country!
The staff are friendly and helpful, we had a good seat. We didnt like the Fried Chicken Steak (its not chicken) which confused the hell out of us. We were looking forward to dancing but that was $15 each cash in the dancehall out back. It was very cool in there and the toilets were bloody awful. Sadly we wont be back
If you want a bar that looks like there is wee on the wall then this is it. The unauthenticated vibe would be great if the bar staff weren't c you next Tuesdays. Supposedly I am meant to tip for service that treats you the same. Smells like a swimming pool. The only people that make it are the customers who are just there to have a good time. The staff can jog on. More to the point had to pay 15 dollars to get on the dance floor!!! Why? It's not like People aren't drinking...

AVOID THIS PLACE had a terrible experience at this place, and I strongly advise any Brazilian (or anyone who values good service) to stay away. The owner is extremely rude and unprofessional, treating customers with arrogance and disrespect. To make matters worse, a woman working at the bar unreasonably picked a fight with a Brazilian guest, making the whole situation uncomfortable and hostile. Instead of addressing the issue professionally, the staff escalated the tension, showing a complete lack of customer service skills. This place does not deserve our money or support. If you’re Brazilian, do yourself a favor and go somewhere else where you’ll be treated with respect. Let’s not give business to people who clearly don’t value their customers.
This review is largely based on the horrible “class” experience. The instructor spent much more time commenting on women’s bodies and making stand-up jokes then instructing anything about dance. For the guys there was no dancing whatsoever for the first 40 minutes of class. At the very end, we partnered up and practiced two-step dance for literally three minutes. That was it. For the whole class. It’s the worst $25 (cash only by the way) I can remember paying in a long time. The bar staff by the way were courteous and wonderful, but don’t outweigh how bad the dance “lesson” was.
Over priced, dirty, rude staff, food is sub par. The bartenders are the worst ever. They yelled at customers, get mad for having to serve and just put your food on a table and yell your name. No silverware, tables are dirty and they have no common courtesy or hospitality. Sad to see this place turn off so many tourists. Bathrooms are disgusting. It’s not worth visiting the Broken Spoke.
How do I leave a negative rating? Horrible. Went for line dancing lessons. Started 10 mins late. Instructor rude and condescending. Didn’t actually move for another 15 mins. Finally left after 40 minutes. Never heard any music and only danced once. And did I say this cost $25? $15 cover charge and $10 for the dance lesson. Save your money. Go anywhere else.
Eek! You know those happy, welcoming Texans that make you want to sit down with them, and have a glass of sweet tea? Uh...the owner of this place isn't anywhere near that Texan. She's a million miles from that. I'll never step another foot in that place, after only stepping one foot in, just recently, for the first time. I live in Austin. Queer Eye for the Straight Guy needs to come back and see if they can saw off some more rough, rusty, rude edges. Some things, unfortunately, just can't be polished. If you've never been in here Austinites...it's a skip.Take it off your bucket list.
The waitress was horrible rolled her eyes when we asked for item she looked so lost. My salad was just lettuce no tomatoes my food had no roll, barbeque had no breading what so ever and it is extra for bread and mustard. Our cups were plastic drinking cup ice was dirty and fyi if you order a soda it's $5.00 for every refill. Waitress never said anything to us and just took to long for our service. She lost our ticket and was trying to add it up on a piece of paper in her head. Was charge 3 times credit charge use was 10.00 automatic for usage. 1 guy came out of no where starting say we were cheap cause we did not tip her and that he was watching us the whole time. So we started telling him why and he start talking shit to us and it went both ways. Very horrible place and the Mexican family on the side of us did not get any service so they left. Clear it was a bad place and made us feel like we did not belong there.
*I am a repeat customer* We paid and attended dance lessons. The instructor sexually harassed a number of patrons, both verbally (sexualizing young patrons, performance jokes at men, inappropriate labels based on attire etc) and physically (butt slapping). A number of customers walked out upset and uncomfortable. I am honestly surprised this has not been handled yet. It was such a disappointing experience, from a once iconic and great place. To note- The wait and bar staff were incredible. I admire their resilience to put up with the instructor, who I believe is their boss.
You're reading this because of how popular this place is. It has sadly degenerated into a moneymaking racket. Skip the lesson, there is basically no dancing and it's basically some perverse comedy show held by the main lady. It will actually be detrimental toward learning how to dance. They pack it so tight there is no space for anybody. It's fine if I don't know how to dance, but literally no one knows how to dance. More than that they don't know basic dance etiquette. What's the fun then? If you're coming, come only for the social. I don't recommend it though. There has to be a better place in Austin for two-step. It's mostly just interesting as probably how the real Texas is like since Austin is pretty unlike Texan stereotypes. But it would be better if I just drove into the countryside.
Unfortunately, this place left a really bad impression due to how the situation was handled by staff. My friend was kicked out simply because she didn’t realize there was a cover charge. Instead of calmly explaining it, the bartender immediately became rude, called her a “bold-faced liar,” and handled the situation in a very immature and unprofessional way. There was no attempt to de-escalate or communicate respectfully—just accusations and attitude. Mistakes happen, especially in loud, crowded bar environments. Being confused about a cover shouldn’t result in being insulted by staff. Customer service goes a long way, and sadly it was completely lacking here. We won’t be returning and wouldn’t recommend this place if you expect basic respect from the people working there. I would leave a 0 star if i could.
I was pretty excited to come here after several failed attempts. $15 cover. Lots of highschool kids. Why are kids here? If I wanted to go to a highschool dance then I'd go back to school Band was okay at Best for the cover. Very warm beer and bartenders that couldn't even say hello. This is the best of Austin. Skip and head downtown instead.
