Unable to get in for breakfast but lunch was mediocre at best. I had chicken salad on a plate. Way too much mayo and didn’t care for grapes added. My daughter had a turkey wrap and it was nothing special at all. Small portion too.
A great local business. Beautiful space with great coffee, pastries and some light fare. Nice place to hang with friends.
My go-to for delicious coffee and pastries! There is also always a space to work, which is hard to come by in the area!
Excellent coffee, strong & smooth, & the most delicious ham & cheese croissant. Can’t wait to come back!
Great drinks and snacks. A great space to work with Wi-Fi and outlets.
A wonderful oasis with an exceptional chai latte and friendly staff. Can’t recommend it highly enough.
Got a cappuccino and an iced tea. Both delicious. The vibes and look are really great. Will definitely make this a must anytime I'm in the area.
Had a delicious roast-forward Cortado here ~ served by such an attentive and artful Barista.
This place is great. It's quite that make it excellent to work. It has very nice decor including plants for sale. And of course great coffee.
Friendly staff. Reasonable prices for the product. They have Bellocq tea which is a game changer for me. Plenty of space to work or relax. Clean bathrooms.
I like this place as it’s quite and the coffee is really good also give you a vibe you have a roster next to you
A great, clean, cozy and friendly shop. I picked up some beans to go and the espresso shot they pulled for me was near perfection. Looking forward to my next visit!
Beautiful coffee shop with tons of light and plants that add to the coziness of the place. The mocha I got was delicious. Great place to work or meet some friends for a kids playdate.
One of my favorite coffee shops—service is always excellent and coffee is so consistent, I know it’ll be exactly what I want every time. And for my decaf drinkers, BEST decaf espresso in the city!!!
I love this coffee shop. The barista who is always there is very professional and friendly. The lattes and americanos I order are consistently excellent! Also, the space is huge and perfect to hang out, work, or play a game of chess.
Super nice café. The cappuccino was good (and I am Italian 😃) and also the almond croissant and peacan sticky bun. The environment inside is very cozy and enjoyable.
The coffee was absolutely delicious (I had an iced oat milk latte) and the granola bar cookie was great too! Lots of space to work and the atmosphere was pleasant. So happy to have this place in the neighborhood!
Promised I would leave a review and here I am! Love this neighborhood coffee shop!! Such a great ambience, the staff is so helpful and the coffee is so good. Always nice to stop in!!
Good layout to study/ work while you get a coffee/ bite
Great space to work, good food, relaxed and focused vibes.
Excellent vanilla ice latte. A new go to spot. Great environment to do work and nice staff. Breakfast tacos are meh (little soggy)
This is some of my favorite coffee in New York. I buy the beans I make coffee at home with here, and the folks working are always so lovely ♥️
A first sign of gentrification on this block. The barista was awesome and helpful and the atmosphere is amazing. Delicious coffee and pastries, with excellent decor. Bathrooms were really clean too
I’m a small cafe owner who discovered Plowshares’ Harlem cafe while my husband andI had to take “forced” time off to come to the city for cancer treatment. The pandemic wreaked it’s havoc on us, mentally, spiritually, and physically as we worked to feed our family and community during such a painful time. We fell in love with Plowshares’ consistently high quality, the kindness of the service, the compassion of the owner who was never too proud to personally serve us. As I signed on to write this review, I saw what was written recently by thelifeofnay, berating the owner for asking them to purchase something from the cafe if they were going to use the space. That someone would write something so selfish about a small business working to make payroll and cover the overhead is just, well, shocking. Plowshares is safe, warm, bright, welcoming and serves the highest quality coffee in the entire city (With all our weeks of cancer treatment, I believe I’ve tried them all.). This cannot be achieved by the owner alone. Maintaining a space as magical as Plowshares is a community effort. The owners must be supported by the public. Your presence as a Plowshares customer, and your willingness to pay them for keeping the heat and the lights on, for navigating the safety issues through hard times, for standing long hours and going home with pain in their bodies after a hard day’s work, and for sourcing the highest quality food for you, is what keeps them there, and keeps that beautiful space available for everyone. Please remember that we small business owners don’t do this to get rich. We do this because we want to bring something beautiful to our communities. I beg of you not to begrudge a fellow business owner who simply asks you to do more than camp out in their establishment, using their bathroom and their wifi and the seats they need for paying customers. Please help them stay in business. Kudos to the owner for stepping forward and asking you to do your part. Too many of us small business owners are too embarrassed and shy to let you know what we need. Instead, we just go out of business and disappear. Thank you, Plowshares, for your bravery to assert what we all need to do in this line of work to stay afloat. If TheLifeofnay needs a warm place to sit down, with a clean bathroom, wifi and room to work, and they don’t wish to spend money, there are a number of NYPL branches throughout the area. They are fabulous!
Plowshares is a great place. The baristas are excellent, the food and drinks are great, and it is a great atmosphere to come and do some work. I love it!
This is hands down the best coffee shop in NYC. I’ve been going to them for years and am always so satisfied. They have two locations - 105th and Broadway and Amsterdam/125th. Fantastic coffee, great ambiance, class service. Go to them!!
FREE BREAD EVENT every first friday of the month at the harlem location! had such a good time! great wine selection, great live music.
FABULOUS COFFEE ! On Saturday the day after our incredible US Open Tennis adventure my wife and I decided to walk to this coffee shop in Harlem....about a mile from our apartment in Upper Manhattan. OH NO ! Not the prettiest of walks because this strip of Amsterdam Ave is known as UPTOWN and it was in dire straits with empty shops and homeless people everywhere. AND ! This was not just a coffee shop but a coffee bean roaster and a very good one. We had enjoyed their A - Train Espresso at the Sugar Hill Cafe a couple of times and decided to head to the source. MORNING TEA ! We arrived just after 11am....a perfect time for what we call morning tea back in Australia. OOPS ! The moment we entered we could see it was LAPTOPPER'S HEAVEN...virtually every table was occupied by someone with a laptop. My wife managed to find a bit of table space while I stood at the cashier counter waiting for service. A cashier named Giselle took our order for 1 x double shot cappuccino, 1 x Cortado both with 2% milk plus an Almond Croissant....with no artificial flavoring I found out. Within a short time our warmed up Almond Croissant was ready to pick up. Soon after Malcolm the talented barista placed our coffees on the service counter. YEAH BABY ! I totally loved my rich tasting cappuccino and my wife was very happy with her cortado. YUMMO ! Personally I am not a big fan of almond croissants but this one was exceptionally delicious....an absolute gem from Petit Chou Downtown. We were very happy with the polite service, our coffee drinks and the very delicious almond croissant. ANOTHER VISIT BECKONS !
Did you know you can order 5lb. bags of their beans on their website? If you're local you'll get them in a day or two by mail (and for a great price.) We've been ordering their beans for two years now. We keep them in an Airscape tin and the our coffee still tastes great by the end of the month. Best way to buy beans in the city! Also, love this location, not many coffee shops with this much space here in Manhattan.
I visit Plowshares Coffee Roasters every day with my mom, and it has become our favorite spot in Harlem for several reasons. Not only do they serve high-quality drinks, but the staff, especially Elroy, makes every visit special. Elroy is our favorite barista—he crafts the perfect drink every time, which is no small feat considering how picky my mom can be! His attention to detail and genuine care for his customers are evident. He always checks in on us and asks how we are doing, adding a personal touch that you just don’t get at places like Starbucks. The owner is also incredibly nice and easy to talk to. You can tell he genuinely cares about this coffee shop and its patrons. The atmosphere here is welcoming and authentic, making it a perfect spot for studying, working, or just enjoying a great cup of coffee.I come every day and leave happy every single time, thanks to the excellent customer service and consistently great drinks. Shout out to Elroy for making Plowshares feel like a second home for us!
Everything about this place is perfect. Excellent coffee served in real porcelain, no disposables (so rare these days), self serve water, multiple restrooms and plenty of space to relax.
Plowshares is not only a great coffee shop, but a fabulous neighborhood gathering spot. The staff are expert & attentive, genuinely friendly. The space is great for coffee, a casual business meeting, or an evening event: music, open mic, etc.
Big open windows so there's a lot of natural light. There are lots of different sizes of tables so you can work quietly by yourself or at bigger tables and benches for groups to gather. I'm not a huge fan of coffee but I love the smell of it. it's really cool that they roast their own beans! I tried their hot chocolate and chai latte and they were delicious.
Best cafe around Columbia, and jazz music on Sunday!🎹
Wonderful coffee shop! I did a double-take when I saw that this place existed - I live in the area and didn’t know a Plowshares location would be opening up near me. I went in, got a cappuccino, and had a great experience. The coffee is exceptional (rivaling the quality of other large third wave coffee companies) and the space is surprisingly large. Nice staff too :) Will definitely be coming again!
Favorite local coffee spot. Fantastic for studying, dates, or a quick pre-dinner drink (they serve alcohol, too!) Owner is always here busting his butt - really appreciate the quiet space he creates with delicious coffee to boot.
This place stands on its own in NYC. There is NOT any coffee shop with this much space, this high quality espresso and baristas, and food/pastries this good. I’ve been everywhere in NYC and this place is special. The prep for the shots are very carefully done with care and precision, the milk art is on point (most places don’t even try anymore), and they have freshly made breakfast tortilla wraps (they call them piadinos) that really are delicious and well made. On the weekends, they have focaccia sandwiches which I’d make a special trip for just those because they’re insanely good. In the back, they’re roasting the coffee (video included), there’s a little espresso science lab that clearly they use for experimenting with who knows, and it’s super clean. What else do you want? I wrote my dissertation here. Love this place.
Quality of the coffee here is really good. Love the space although I never sat down to enjoy it. Definitely will become one of my go-tos as a girl who loves coffee
Stayed in Harlem for 6 weeks over the summer. Tried several coffee shops in the first week I was there and easily made this one my “go-to”. Their coffee is truly un matched. I consider myself a bit of a coffee “snob” having grown up with parents who owned a coffee shop, and having traveled to countries that are known for their coffee. Not only is this some of the best espresso I’ve had, but the customer service is so wonderful. After only a few days, the weekday barista already knew my order. Iced americano with an extra shot. He was super friendly and very knowledgeable when my parents came to visit and were asking all about their coffee. They also have a cinnamon roll that is very good, if you see one available, snag it! All of their other pastries were good too. Honestly, I can’t wait until we are back in NY permanently because I have been missing this place!
Cozy coffeeshop that offers some daily food selections as well. I had the chai and the potato/broccoli soup and read a book for a while. There were folks working on their laptops too. They have a selection of fresh pastries, including vegan options, as well as pre-packaged vegan/ gluten-free snacks.
Wonderful coffee shop. It’s great Harlem gets to enjoy a spot like this one. Recommend buying their whole coffee beans — freshly roasted. Great variety and wonderful flavor profiles. My favorite shop in the city.
Best coffeeshop I found in this area on a recent 5 day stay. Great coffee, excellent pastries, friendly staff, roomy, and a grand piano for guests to play.
Stayed around the corner at the George for a few nights and got coffee and pastries at Plowshares most mornings. Friendly staff, great pastries and brekkie sandwiches.
EXCELLENT SERVICE ! My wife and I were more than happy with our first visit here a few days ago. On Wed, Sept 11th we were now into the 2nd week of our 2 week vacation in New York, NY....lots more to do and see. After breakfast at our apartment in Upper Manhattan my wife suggested we walk down here for cappuccinos...and a super delicious almond croissant. SO WE DID ! After walking almost a mile along cruddy Amsterdam Ave in the downtrodden Uptown neighborhood we arrived at Plowshares around 10am. A friendly cashier / barista named Noah greeted us warmly and said he would be with us soon. OF COURSE ! The usual mob of laptoppers had control of almost every table in the place but we did nab a couple of spots at a community table. My wife had made it clear to me she wanted an almond croissant whether I wanted to share or not...in need of a sugar hit. OH NO ! I looked at the display case where they kept their small assortment of light pastries and NO ALMOND CROISSANTS ! We went ahead and ordered 2 x double shot Cappuccinos with 2% milk. BUGGER ! Still in shock that they were completely out of their sensational almond croissants from Petit Chou in the East Village I had to ask Noah why ? A dude came in earlier and cleaned them out. OH WELL ! Noah placed our beautiful looking Cappuccinos on the service counter...I complimented him on his good work but he humbly deferred to Malcom the barista on our first visit. We sat down at our table and totally enjoyed our rich creamy cappuccinos. It's a nice looking coffee shop, great coffee, talented baristas but the hordes of laptoppers puts a big dent in my comfort level. NEXT STOP ! We headed to the subway for a ride to Yankee Stadium in The Bronx !
beautiful space with great coffee, wifi, and lots of outlets. the best coffeeshop to work in i’ve found in this area. i almost don’t want people to know about it so it can be all mine! the other location of plowshares has equally great coffee and service, but smaller space. i recommend the ham and cheese croissants, and the mocha is the best i’ve ever had!
Amazing coffee, beautiful space, and genuinely kind people. You can taste the care in every cup. Plowshares Coffee Roasters is the kind of place that makes you slow down and enjoy the moment. One of my favorite coffee spots—highly recommend!!
Live jazz Sundays 2pm is great. Good coffee, limited food options sometimes. Last time I came they had a tasty focaccia sandwich, maybe it's new
Just tried this coffee for the first time, very good! Awesome and such wonderful coffe spot
The coffee is great, the service is top-notch, love the design and the jazz sessions on Sundays. They even have a chess set. Feels like heaven to me. 10/10!
Delicious focaccia sandwiches, standard fare for coffee (+tea, chai, hot cocoa). Delicious baked goods
We always come here when we visit New York City! Plowshares has outstanding coffee and excellent service. The Harlem store is spacious for a sit-me-down, and the Broadway location is the quintessential hole-in-the-wall. Both highly recommended!!
It’s a delight to find an unexpected jazz Sunday brunch in favorite cafe spot. Made my day!
A beautiful place to work, with many outlets, seat cushions, various seating arrangements, self-serve water, TWO restrooms, that has an amazing free monthly Open mic too! (Definitely sign up for their newsletter — it was the first good thing that ever came out of my spam inbox!) Drink prices are very reasonable to me. I think they serve some soups and pretzels for food; have not had myself yet. My iced chai latte served in a real glass was life-giving on a horribly humid day. They have some beer/ales and one on tap. Day pictures are from a grateful Sunday afternoon where many people were working alongside me with laptops, and it was very quiet, spacious, and filled with natural light. Including one picture of the Open Mic where my partner and I stayed for an amazing show until 10pm on a summer Fri night. With prices so reasonable, I would really love for this cafe to thrive. Please come here. Note: Hours differ depending on the weekday!
This place has had the BEST coffee-responsibly sourced- expertly prepared for years. But today we tried a creation of theirs called a Breakfast Piadina: MIND BLOWN! A fresh-baked delicate Italian flatbread folded over egg, arugula, house-made picked onion with avocado, a little cheese. Worth a trip from afar! There are also beautiful croissant-based pastries. And the owners wonderful community-minded folks. Spacious, bright atmosphere- the best place on this island!
Very fresh espresso and lovely latte art in the cortado. They even roast on site!

First time at Plowshares. The coffee was just right and delicious. I had an iced latte. Service was very friendly and quick. Also, beautiful atmosphere and ambiance. Definitely recommend!

I LOVE Plowshares. Truly my favorite cafe by Columbia. It is large and spacious with many places to sit and great drinks and food to keep you sustained. I have been going here for over three years, and it is my go to place. I really love their soups which are fresh and rotated. There was a period of maybe two months when I came twice a week to work. Not too loud not too busy but still dynamic. my ONLY! wish is that they would carry matcha, but they also have many other non-coffee options (hot tea, hot chocolate, chai latte)
Cafe culture is alive and well here! You can get a lot of work done here. The light is as good as the vibe. I have not been to the live music night yet—but if the grand piano is any indication they take it as seriously as their coffee.
Pumpkin pastry perfectly executed; excellent and flavorful lamination, perfect pumpkin filling—not too dense, and sweet just enough for a breakfast pastry. Flat white well done—no nonsense but still kind staff. Amazing space. There’s care.
Nice service, lots of space (unlike any nyc coffee) and the pastries are amazing. One of my dependable neighborhood coffees for years

Surprised to find this cafe in a such sh*t area. The space itself is bigger than what it looks like from the outside. Plenty of seating. It was relatively at a low volume the entire time I sat here which was nice. Really surprised. The prices were average for a coffee shop. You can tap to pay or pay with cash. If you wind up in this area on a cold day and need a quiet place to sit and do work or just sit, it’s worth the visit.
Good spot for coffee and sandwich. More spacious and comfortable than many of the other cafes in this neighborhood.
We were on our own walking tour of Savannah and when we got hungry for lunch we turned to trip advisor to see what was nearby. Goose feathers was the perfect choice- freshly made sandwiches and a nice seat outside. We had some excellent food in Savannah and this quick lunch stands out as a win for sure! Would most definitely return and want to try breakfast too.
Coffee here is amazing, haven’t tried the pastries since giving up sweets for Lent, but that’s on my to-do list. A large and spacious place to take a laptop and do some work while people watching, which will be taken advantage of by the nearby City College student. Centrally (and strangely) located next to the live kill poultry spot and a small Mexican bodega, it sticks out from the neighborhood surroundings. However, along with Presto Cafe (that just recently opened between Amsterdam and Morningside), this is a welcoming addition to the usual unhealthy and repetitive fast food spots in the neighborhood. Sadly I’m moving, but whenever I’m near I’ll make sure to stop by.
Strawberry cheesecake pastry changed my life. The latte was okay, the coffee is too acidic for my liking, but milk was steamed to perfection and the pastry was so good it changed my life. It was everything you have ever wanted a pastry to be. Buttery and flaky puff pastry but the filling was rich and fruity and tart and creaming and perfectly balanced the puff pastry. You know when you get a chocolate croissant and it’s way too much croissant relative to the amount of chocolate hoped for? This strawberry cheesecake pastry put those pastries to shame. One less star for vibes because I was going there to do work for 2-2.5 hrs but their WiFi policy makes you feel like a nuisance for sticking around even after spending over $15 on coffee and one pastry, even with empty seats. I don’t like overstaying a welcome so places can get business, but I still felt like it was a bit extreme. So if you need to do work there, plan to spend less than an hour and a half.
The coffee is good & the food is really good. The older man (owner?) who works here is really moody though. Whenever he’s here he complains about something, is pouty and ruins the otherwise positive atmosphere. I feel bad for the other staff.
We came here for a business outing and we were not disappointed at all. Even though we were a large group, we got seated, through the line quickly and more importantly, the food was fresh and delicious. One weekend day I was laying around, feeling sick and overwhelmed. But then I remembered I'd been wanting to come here since I moved, due to loving local coffee shops. So I pulled myself together and walked up here, and I was happy I did! The interior is so peaceful and really a breath of fresh air (literally since there are plants all around you). The lighting is warm, the people working or chatting are chill, and the staff was friendly. They have smart procedures in place to maintain a quality experience, such as using a pin from your receipt to access both the wifi and the restroom. I like this process, I feel it ensures a good experience for customers and maintains a good business operation for them. I had an oat mocha, which is now my favorite one in this neighborhood. So, hallelujah! Finally. First fave since I moved here, and I am a happy gal!!!! I will be back for my studying and coffee. A+
Cool vibes here, roasting set up and exposed brickwork interior make for a nice cafe to spend some time, chill or work. The coffee is good, I had an 8.0 cortado, slightly too over roasted and bitter but the was at least some good flavour coming through. Quite a strong cup which was great.
Good chill music. Ideal atmosphere for those who want to focus and get things done. WiFi, accessible plugs and many tables. There’s a piano and a chessboard. Yummy pretzel and very good pain au chocolate. The coffee was small, but the flavor was great.
This is a go-to place for coffee and a cozy space to work on whatever you are doing. I like the space a lot and they serve pastries from a super delicious bakery which is one of my favorites in lower east side. Cappuccino was decent, although not super creamy. The beans they used were on the mid-dark roasted side, slightly bitter.
Beautiful coffee shop in Harlem. 😍 - perhaps one of my favorite coffee shops in NYC. I’ve been here twice but always satisfied with my cappuccino or latte. I went here last Saturday (images) and it was a rainy day. I was a bit disappointed that I wasn’t asked if I would have my coffee inside or to go, so my beverage was served on a carton cup. But other than that, as an avid coffee drinker, I’m a fan.

Hello I’m thelifeof nay. I’m here to respond to Karen. It’s not about paying ,EVERYTIME I stepped foot in there I payed for something, even if it was something I didn’t like because they didn’t have it. It’s about respect , I was on my college class and while my teacher is telling me about my final and my camera is on , he rudely came up asking me to buy something and when I told him I was in class he didn’t care. It’s not about buying anything it’s about mutal respect . I’m not the only person who said he can have much better customer service. Your pushing about 100 years old coming for a 18 year old. Keep it cute because you don’t know me or the situations so you should mind your business.
Huge space thats beautiful and clean, yummy coffee. A super place to work! Dont expect literally any customer service. Been here twice and any attempts at convo are met with silence lol
Everything was going fine until I began to walk away from the the counter. This older man said I needed to pay for my coffee. I said already paid for my coffee. He gave one of the most insincere apologies I ever received from anyone. I'm unmistakably African American. The atmosphere and coffee though, were very good! I won't be going back.
Both restrooms out of order. Barely heard my food called out, and it was served in the other side of where drinks were served which was interesting. Nice vibes, piano plants etc. I’d go back but both restrooms being down at a coffee shop really multiplies other mild problems. Coffee is a diuretic🤣
Just got an 8-oz. black hot coffee. To my dismay it was a rather sour dark roast, reminiscent of what I didn't like about Joe Coffee down at Grand Central Terminal. But hey, next time I'll add milk & sugar.
Great coffee shop, but 2 stars off for being aggressively dog unfriendly. Came here on a very hot summer day (90° +) and while most places will let you stand by the door with a well-behaved leashed dog, this place will force you outside in the heat to wait for your to-go drink.

Great atmosphere, couldn't get wifi to work on my laptop and had a truly dreadful Americano. Disappointing because I was excited to find a work spot near my apartment. Maybe the cold brew is better and if the wifi works on your computer I'd say give it a go.
Great coffee; service without any care or love. The senior guy isn’t only acting annoyed towards his clients, but also condescending towards his staff. Laziness all over the place.
Coffee and space are good, customer service is terrible. I wanted to purchase a bag of coffee beans and have them grind it. They were quick to refuse to grind it the way I wanted to have it done which makes them useless as a place to purchase beans. I'm not impressed when a place goes out of their way to say no. Double Dutch espresso down the street has coffee that is just as good and they go out of their way to say yes to the customer.
I truly want to like this place so much. It’s in my neighborhood and also the decor and space is very nice but the older gentleman that seems to run the place is so rude and no customer service. He seems annoyed with customers asking for simple things like creamer or a to go cup. Every time I have been here same thing. I have tried to give it more than one chance. Also the cream and milk that sits by the window always warm. And they don’t have matcha which is a big thing for coffee shops. Beer and wine but no matcha. Overall if I need a coffee I probably will stop but the service is poor and makes for a bad experience.
I really loved studying at this place, but the staff is so rude/unreasonable that it's not worth it. They add so much ice to their iced drinks (more than half the cup) that by the time you get home, especially now that it's summer, the drink is watery/doesn't taste good. I politely asked them to do light ice and they gave me significantly less coffee. I thought it was a mistake so I didn't say anything, but the third time it happened, the empty space in the cup (that I paid over $5.00 for) was so significant that I asked if they could add a splash of milk. The guy smugly refused and went on about how they put exactly 4 oz of ice in their cups and the amount of liquid was the same. I go there, i.e., spend money there, almost every single day--the fact that they're so stingy about *milk* is so bizarre. I want to support local, but this place does not care about it's customers. There's such a good opportunity here to build a community space, but they clearly just don't care. So disappointing. For context, this is the drink they gave me. Update: even if I accept the explanation from the business, the core issue was the rudeness/condescension with which the guy at the counter communicated. This is not the first time it's happened either (and based on other reviews, I'm not the only person to have this experience). I'd rather spend my money at a coffee shop that's kind to its customers and makes people feel welcome rather than like inconveniences.

I usually don't write bad reviews, but I had a horrible encounter with the owner. I asked to get a scone warmed up and when I bit into it, it was freezing cold inside. Then, I asked him if he could warm it and he just smugly said, I can't heat it up as it would be a risk. I said what if I cut it off, and didn't budge or refund or anything. Almost, felt racial
Bought beans and food and coffee for $35 and after 1.5 hours the internet got cut off, and when I asked for wifi code, the counter said I need to order more ,,, i spend more than $200 in coffee every month here but was really turned off by that, wont be returning
I came in with my friend who has a service dog a golden retriever, depending on the person who’s at the counter you will get different responses. I walked to the counter and the guy with the red/ginger beard i think named Malcom . Thinking he was doing his “job” immediately saw me and instead of “Hello, how are you” like any other normal barista he just said “No pets are allowed in the coffee shop.” Me , not being the owner of the dog responded that it was a service dog. The law is you ask the owner of the dog/person handling the dog. My friend was still by the door with the dog, she was on the phone with her sister not aware of what was happening . The barista made no attempt to question the owner of the dog. His entire demeanor was very hostile, he asked me “what service does the dog perform “I said “it’s my friends dog she’s a seizure response dog “ right then he should have just started to ask the owner of the dog not me, but he quickly snapped , “I asked what service he performs not your disability”. I responded “he alerts seizures you shouldn’t be asking me, it’s my friend’s dog “ I saw how hostile he was and rude so I walked over to my friend and explained to her the issue , she was going to speak to the guy but she overheard him speaking to someone else that works there “I don’t think it’s a service dog “ so she didn’t feel like debating her medical reality with a barista. We tied the dog outside , ordered two mid lattes and stale pastries and called it a day. To be fair LEGALLY speaking, “seizure response dog “ is a perfectly acceptable answer under the ADA. He was being purposely obtuse. I’m from Harlem, we are both native New Yorkers and it’s a shame to see my neighborhood lose its charm and be policed by hostile white transplants who treat disabled people of color with suspicion like we’re running a scam. Do better, Plowshare. Train your employees to be friendly considering they work for tips. Severe attitude issues with that one. Sipsteria just one block up is a charming ,better, friendlier, smaller place that welcomed her service dog. Maybe because it’s run by immigrants…
