From the moment I entered Café Gijón, I was immersed in its literary atmosphere: portraits of writers, marble tables hosting small literary gatherings, and that unmistakable espresso aroma. I sipped a cappuccino while browsing a community bookshelf. The staff were patient and discreet, almost confiding. Perfect for quiet reading or a creative meeting. Though touristy in parts, there's a genuine local clientele still debating between two historic bars. A place that evokes the fullness of twentieth‑century Madrid.

I have been there twice and both times on the terrace. The food was delicious and the waiters were very nice and friendly. Yes, it is not a mid-budget restaurant but the experience made it worth.

We stopped here after the opera around 11:30 pm night. I wanted something light, but ended up ordering the light white moist and tasty fish in a light cream sauce with peas. I ate at the outside cafe. The service was excellent and the food far exceeded my expectations.

It's not just how confortable it is, it is how wonderful the Service is. Stayed after visiting the museums area, in the original old indoors restaurant in the Street side, not in the terrace. The waiters Pedro, Julian (and all others) were all fauboulus, gentile, nice and gracious eventhough our ticket was smalll. They were very nice with everybody. Just great. And the food was perfect. Highly recommended.

May 2023 Our group had a wonderful custom meal here. Appetizers, main meal, flamed baked alaska, and all you could drink alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Local specialties, and wine. The entire menu had been pre-arranged. We had a private room in the basement. This restaurant is rich in history, and there are pictures everywhere on the walls. Super interesting. Our three servers had a mission to serve 47 of us quickly, and that they did. The drinks were cold, and the food was hot. No fooling around with these men. No joking around, no smiling, just great food and service. They were amazing. I had never had such unfriendly servers, yet awesome service. They worked so hard, and we all appreciated that. I would definitely go back on my own.

A historical café where intellectuals used to meet. It needs to be better kept/ maintained as it looks a bit messy and cheesy and is not the cheapest place for a drink, so not really value for money.

One average quality coffee and a medium sized slice of very nice apple pie: €10,90. Café Gijón is a classic Madrid cafe but nowadays it’s only for the wealthy. If you can afford it it’s worth a visit.

The area is nice, plenty of other bars nearby to continue the bar hopping. Seating outside was nice, service quite good.

We were three for lunch. The waiter recommended the “arroz con bogavante “ as spectacular. 33€ per person. It was the worst rice I’ve ever eaten, no taste whatsoever, and the crab was like an old shoe with the dried, overcooked, shredded meat inside; inedible. A very expensive bad experience. DON'T COME HERE. Let this place close as it deserves to do so. Whoever owns it is milking it's history. Food was incredibly mediocre and pricey. They conveniently failed to share with us the lunch menu which is significantly cheaper and apparently this happens all too often to tourists. The mixed salad was gross/barely passable, especially the white asparagus.

So disappointed. One waiter in particular was very unfriendly and rude. Quite shocking and contrary to how we are usually treated. This restaurant was recommended by Micheal Portillo in his guide to Madrid. We were given a full menu which seemed overpriced for the quality of food being offered. They neglected to offer us the fixed price set lunch - for locals only. We chose not to stay. Decidedly felt like a local restaurant for local people.... Doubt whether Dali or Picasso would choose this restaurant if they were alive today. Ate in a delightful restaurant 2 minutes away. Food delicious and staff a joy!

Awful. The service is bad, air smokey, and food way overpriced. The albóndigas are like chef boyardee with French fries for 19 euros. We won't be back. Place looked promising but I would just show up for a few beers if I were you. Also the bread can be used as a personal defense weapon.

My friends and I stopped by in the evening for some water and ice cream after a long day out in the sun. Besides paying over €40 for three people, we were treated absolutely horribly by our server. We had heard great things about Café Gijón and wanted to go back for lunch the next day, but we quickly changed our minds about revisiting.
