So happy to have one of the most iconic old New York hot spots back in action! Been too long. And Isaac was a fabulous opener
i love to come here during restaurant week and enjoy the salmon without paying a fortune. The round tables are the best, to enjoy the classy decoration in a 360 perspective.
Great ambiance, the cocktails and service where great plus live music performance. Very pleasant service staff and welcoming environment.
Small intimate venue. Great for soft live music. Excellent service and atmosphere. Expensive but worth it.
COzy, romantic and wonderful. Food is excellent, service superb, friendly and attentive. A lovely place to spend the evening. WOnderful New York experience. Out of towners love it as a inside New York experience.
A unique East Side institution, good food, Old World service, top-tier bartenders, and magnificent performers. There is nowhere else like it.
There's nothing quite like The Carlyle. It's a unique experience steeped in tradition. If you're lucky enough to catch Earl Rose on the piano, you're in for a treat.
michael feinstein, cafe carlyle, bemelmans's artwork, the bar, the professional staff... all practically perfect. with every last penny.
I had a great time, food was amazing and their waitress Jessica gave us excellent service. I definitely recommend it.
We only had drinks. Good music and atmosphere. Loved the artwork on the walls
The servers were very kind and the food was great. The calm ambiance is what makes you stay
I love the Cafe Carlyle - I used to see Bobby Short and Woody Allen there - Wonderful ambiance and quintessential New York
Fantastic! The food, service, and entertainment excellent. The only complaint I have is if there is a dress code requiring gentlemen to wear a jacket, it should be enforced. I saw three men having dinner wearing just a T-shirt. One was even wearing shorts. Not a good image.
Exquisite food, proper crowd, cozy and home-like environment + you can get Woody Allen playing live (that is a must have experience before you die) next to your table. A 'must be place' if you really want to enjoy NYC.
I am a little surprised how few reviews this high end restaurant got on Yelp. I realized when I dined there. We were surrounded by rich and old folks! I suspect they even know what Yelp is?! But anyway, Cafe Carlyle deserved a great review because the service is superb and the food is excellent. My husband and I came here for our Valentine's Day celebration and it is definitely a romantic and upscale restaurant to take your sweetheart to. The interior decor is expensive looking and the wait staff is all running around trying to please customers. I noticed a lot of older rich folks dining and talking business. I started my meal with jumbo shrimp cocktail. There are about 6 on my plate and they are very fresh and tender. My husband got the steak tartar and it is unique and very tasty. I have never had a beef tartar done this way but it is amazing. For entree, I got the lamb chops and they come with this awesome sauce on the side. The chop is cooked to perfection; it is tender, juicy and fatty. My husband went for their lobster dinner and it is a full size big lobster cooked in butter sauce. We were both really full after entree. Still, we went for our dessert to close the dinner on a high note. I really like my berries crumble; it is slightly buttery but fruity. Therefore, it is not overly sweet and heavy. My husband tried the creme brulee and it is a great choice too if you have enough room for it. We ended our dinner happily and glad we discovered the restaurant thanks to TravelZoo coupon!
If you're looking for an unforgettable experience in New York City, look no further than The Carlyle, a Rosewood Hotel in the heart of the city. As a travel destination and entertainment critic as well as a wedding / event organiser this sophisticated hotel with top-notch music events at the Cafe Carlyle and the Behelmans Bar are our No. 1 recommendation. Just dined at the Cafe Carlyle while being entertained by Cheyenne Jackson. A spectacular event and an entertainer of extraordinary talent. Now that's put New York City top of our list of destinations! Music continues after 9.30pm until midnight with Chris Gillespie and his Jazz Trio at the Behelman's Bar - huge talent and widely entertaining. A vibrant atmosphere in the Bar, wonderful people and great hospitality. Well done!
Cafe Carlysle is a gem, in the old New York style which is so rapidly disappearing. But of course, if you want an evening of wonderful music, and lively conversation with virtually any other guest, when in New York - visit Bemelmann's Bar, right next door. I'm there at least once a week, on average, and have been going for years. If you do visit Bemelmann's, look for Tim, who has been with the establishment for 30 years, and may, indeed, be the best bar man in North America. I kid thee not.
Bemelmans bar is truly iconic and should not be missed whether or not you're a fan of the Madeline books. The bartenders are always pleased to make one of their signature drinks - my favorite is the mojito - and, if you're lucky, as we have been, you'll get a glimpse of Woody Allen acting like any other New Yorker.
Went last night, great food, service, music, and atmosphere. We had seen the documentary Always at the Carlyle and have been dying to go ever since. You get to step back in time to a grand hotel where service is everything.
Me and my daughter went here yesterday and we had a splendid experience. The place is modern, clean and the desserts were really yum, the food presentation was sleek too.
Food was very good and staff amazingly friendly and helpful. Would recommend even if you don't manage to get a reservation to see Woody Allen and the Eddy Davis band.
Unbelievable, indescribable, cozy & warm. Out of my top 3 hotels in N.Y. It’s #1. Love you, don’t go changing. It’ll break my heart. James Gallagher
The food was impeccable as one can imagine. The service here is beyond the bar I felt like we were the only ones in the place Eventbrite was packed. So good.
I didn't go to the Cafe, I went to Bemelmans for martinis. Bemelmans never disappoints! One of the great spaces in the city. Rashid was tremendous!
It was chosen as the location in the beautiful movie "Little Manhattan" of 2005 (in Italy "Falling in love in Manhattan") with the then 11 years old actors starring Charlie Ray (New York doc) and Josh Hutcherson at their first romantic dinner 👫
Classic NY fine dining. Provides an intimate setting for entertainers to perform. Food was great, service was stellar. The manager, GoGo, greeted us and also checked on us twice during our meal. It would not be the same excellent experience without him.
I can't say enough wonderful things about the staff at The Carlyle. Everyone was so friendly and amazing. David and Jared in concierge were incredible. Demetrius in the bar was the best. The food and drinks were delicious as well. I will definitely be back.
Check their website for upcoming performances. It's small and intimate. Reserve bar seating. Much cheaper and just as good of seats
I loved it there. They had vegan options for me and my sister who are vegan. We saw Dianna Agron perform and she was incredible, I cried a lot as a super Glee fan and just fan of hers in general. It was a beautiful environment, and honestly not badly priced for the food and show. The service was super nice and accommodated to us very well. Great time 👍.
Great art work.. well curated .food is good. Service was great ..till the clearing guy came up who was in super rush and lifted food /dishes while some were still eating... and did not ask (verbally or gestures) for permission before doing so. Dont let that discourage u ...still probably one of the best places in UES/NYC .
Had many lovely dinners with my Father, it was one of his special places. Food, wine, cocktails and the service are fabulous. I met many interesting people always having great tales of their lives. I return a few times a year. Still see some unique people. The Carlyle is more than dinner, cocktails, comfortable rooms. It's an experience to be savored and cherished. Like my Father, it too is my happy places. Thank you 💙
I live near the hotel and am a regular for a reason. It's fabulous. The decor, food and service are excellent. The entertainment is always amazing. I see some negative reviews but they all seem to refer to the pricing in relation to what they received. It's expensive and quality is always expensive. I've travelled the world and this place, where Café society flourishes is definitely worth every penny.
The drinks were superb as was the dinner. Many who have visited here already know this, but be forewarned that this is a very costly outing but, in our opinion, well worth the expense. This is a truly NYC experience that everyone should have at least once. It was such a memorable time that we plan on going back. On another side note, since this was a birthday celebration, we didn't necessarily choose the venue. I did check to see who was performing that night and it was Steven Page, formerly of Bare Naked Ladies. I didn't know a great deal about the band of his solo career but we were thoroughly entertained with his performance so all in all, it was a great evening fill with great food, drink and a wonderful intimate show. I can;t say enough great things about our time at the Cafe Carlyle.
I thoroughly enjoy an evening at the Cafe Carlyle. There is nothing better than a nice supper, surrounded by interesting people from all over the world, with amazing entertainment, in a legendary supper club. This is NYC's best experiences. On our recent visit we saw Michael Feinstein. He delivers an excellent show everytime. Food is terrific and beverage program satisfies cocktail, champagne and wine drinkers. We never miss a visit to CC when we are in NYC.
Afternoon tea time. Perfect for a nice getaway with beautiful interior design, surrounded by historic Carlyle hotel features, luxurious table seating, cozy and comfortable stay. Wait staff were friendly and helpful. Quality quiet tea time with delicious tea sandwiches and English scones. Perfect for ladies and dates!
I went for my daughter's birthday. We arrived around 9:30, the restaurant was not full, but the atmosphere was unique! We loved the upscale decor, the waiters were perfect and the food delicious, especially the Lobster! Nice hotel and people, we will return, thats for sure!
A fabulous place to go. It is an exquisite property that lives up to all the hype past and present. And Bemmealmans Bar makes great hand made drinks in a very comfortable environment where you can be dress to the nines or in casual dress. When you get there ask for Leo he is a wonder representative of the property. All thumbs up
A beautiful setting, excellent food and service, elegant in every way. This is an opportunity rarely found any more. For a special occasion, you can't go wrong at the Cafe Carlyle.
Excellent food, service and decor. Prices are quite steep and you will usually only find the very upper east siders dining here because no one else can afford it. Great for special occasions. Very romantic. Extensive wine list. Everything I have had here is great.
Always packed, but we managed to get two seats at the (Bemelmans) bar. Delicious drinks (we recommend the Fleur de Paradis), fresh bar snacks (we also ordered from the bar menu), AND there was a terrific piano-sax duo (cover required but worth it). Lovely spontaneous NYC experience.
We were there several times in the last two years for cabaret show with our favorite John Lloyd Young. Awesome place, service is beyond wonderful. A bit pricey. But we do enjoy going there. Wheelchair accessible bathroom available on the Madison Avenue entrance.
I don't treat myself to a Cafe Carlyle dinner and show often, but when I do it's always a magical experience. I've seen Dianna Agron there twice (so fun). Sharif at the bar is so friendly and kind!! Alban is also great. Shout out to the staff as they are wonderful and always make it worth the while. Now, the seats are a bit cramped so... you've been warned. Though, I do find it more intimate and it's fun to get to know the folks sitting around you!
Special thanks to Gogo and Romy Roder for making this a night we will never forget!
We were at Cafe Carlyle this week to see Bill Murray, and it was absolutely wonderful! The show itself was fantastic, but the entire experience of being at Cafe Carlyle was top notch. The staff was wonderful, and Mr. Gogo specifically was very helpful and accommodating. It was a very special night and an honor to be able to have the experience of being at such an iconic spot!
Had a wonderful time seeing Sutton Foster at Cafe Carlyle over the holidays. An old school fancy New York City establishment and great vibes. A few helpful notes for those interested in visiting: Opt for an earlier reservation, as the host allows you to choose from various open tables. We had a 645 seating for the 830 show and had a great table near the bar with unobstructed views and a tad more room. Dress code: Formal, however, a man can certainly get away without a jacket these days. I had a jacket and slacks but removed my jacket upon entering as the space is tad stuffy, some men just had one sweater. So dress for style and comfort not stuffy. The food: We had the $95pp dinner (separate cost from the tickets and does not include drinks), and it was okay. Kinda reminded me of airport lounge food, nothing to write home about, but we were there for 3 hours, so we had to eat. If cost is a factor or if you plan to eat before, opt for bar seating, as the minimum spend is lower and still a great view. Overall, a great time, I recommend splurging on a visit for a performer you would love to see up close and personal (which was Sutton Foster for me).
OK, I think we all know this is a pretty classy spot. The room is very attractive. We went for dinner and a show. Tables are tight. It is an eclectic mix of guests. Lighting is low. We were offered a choice of tables despite the fact that we purchased general admission. The food actually exceeded our expectations. Fairly basic dishes but flavourful. Lobster bisque, baby romaine salad, roast chicken & salmon hit the mark. We were treated royally throughout the evening. Service is impeccable. Alberto took very good care of us. Mind you, it is not an inexpensive evening. The show, our meal, pre-dinner drinks, a bottle of wine & gratuity was close to $1000. This is a special night out. You should try it at least once.
This is my favorite hotel in the city because of the old New York charm. Magic always happens here. On this night I bumped into Reese Witherspoon and got to watch a mesmerizing jazz performance by Dianna Agron. That said, I wish they would include the price of dinner in the tickets since there is a mandatory minimum spend. I thought dinner was included with the tickets. It’s not. Alas, it was a beautifully pricy evening winding back the clock to old New York. 🕰️🗽🎷🍸
It’s been for a while since I wanted to come for afternoon tea at the Carlyle cafe, and now it became my second favorite place for afternoon tea in the city. My daughter, my daughter in law and I, we go every month to a different tea salon, but for some reason never got a chance to try it at the Carlyle. Perhaps, we saved it for a special occasion. I loved everything, the red water glasses 👍, the decor, the ambiance small quiet room, the tea selection, the food (little scones baked at the premises are just delicious), and most of all - exceptional service. Gilberto, our server, went above and beyond to ensure that our tea service experience was beyond superb. Everything was just perfect. We came with two toddlers and a month old baby. Our first afternoon tea with the new family addition! Glad we picked this room. What a wonderful and unforgettable experience, we enjoyed every minute of it. Thank you! Can’t wait to be back. P.s. one little comment on sugar packets- brown sugar cubes would make the whole experience even better ☺️
The best hotel because of the people here. It's a dream being here...even though we are not celebrities we felt as though we were. The service is hands down the best we have ever experienced. We just got married and ended out our journey being here which was my surprise gift from my husband. Love this historic hotel..special thanks to Johnathan at the front desk for being so amazing.
Brunch at the Carlyle is so fabulously luxurious. You are greeted, seated at perfectly appointed tables with gorgeous linens and then offered big fat menus. We came on a day that was simply horrid with rain so sitting and chilling was just right and a slow relaxed brunch was heaven. No one was rushing and in NYC that is something of a miracle! Brunch is 3 courses and so large and so delicious. They always have a glorious hunk of meat in the trolley and it is not to be missed. We were stuffed but dessert was awesome. After the longest brunch we headed to the iconic Bemelman’s bar for a cocktail. Now this is what Sunday is all about. Please follow @joannasable on instagram for more food and travel fun.
Went here with my wife for Valentines Day. We had the Travelzoo/Google deal for two which included a select 3 courses and champagne. Usually restaurants narrow down the options for coupons, they did but there were still some great options like lobster and Kobe steak. The food was spectacular, I had beef tare tare (amazing) and lobster (not bad but didn't blow me away). For dessert we had creme brulee, great but forgettable. My only complaint was that the waiter wasn't too attentive when we wanted to pay our bill...but I would imagine it is one of those upscale restaurants that just lets you hang out and dine and chat for as long as you wish.
I had a great dining experience here. The service was good and the staffs are very cool and attentive. The food was delicious, well-cooked and healthy. The restaurant itself was beautiful, very charming and well-decorated.
I came here on a recommendation from a friend, and wasn't disappointed! The food was delicious, and the service was great. I was seated a comfortable distance from the people at the next table--which is unthought of in NYC! Great find!
It's a very small venue, but the drinks are very good and the music is fantastic. Everything is expensive, but you're paying for the golden age atmosphere they're trying to create.
The staff and service were great. The prices are unreasonable. $21 for a shot of Tito’s vodka? Great service experience but I never enjoy feeling like I’m being ripped off.
I'm a native New Yorker; born and bred. And there are still a few NYC institutions I haven't checked out. Bemmelman's Bar in the Carlyle was on that list. But I have to admit, I was a little disappointed and found it a bit (maybe a lot) too touristy for my taste. It's iconic, no question but not the mellow, cool, 1940's/50's, atmospheric NYC vibe I was going for. Three of us dropped more than $300 for a few cocktails and small plates (all good, though Dirty Martini lacked the ice crystals in the drink that make the drink really work; glad I went once but, for me, one and done.
the setting is elegant and impressive. the food was good but not outstanding, especially given the price. the service was an absolute clunker. the waiter seemed to continually forget our table, never checked in on us; i even had to chase him down to get the bill. i would not recommend the carlyle ... it clearly believes its own press, and feels it can rest on that.
Mind the cover charge and you'll have a good time and not feel ripped off. Don't misunderstand, I have no issue with a cover charge if you get value for it and it is well publicized. The band spent more time on break than playing the night I went. Love the bar but could do without the band.
Went to Cafe Carlyle for M. Ward residency, about 25-30 tables, $95 food minimum requirement each for tables and $50 minimum requirement each for bar, dress code requirement- jacket requirement for men, sneakers and jeans were okay. All workers/staff are older men like they’ve all been there a long time? But there was really no bad seat in the house and we were able to change our 1830 reservation to 1930 and still get a good view from stage. Food isn’t worth the $95 minimum each so would do bar seating if we do come back for a show. Overall a memorable experience!
I came here for afternoon Tea with my group this past June. The decor alone takes you in-I looove. Though it is a small space, you do not feel as if people can intrude on your conversation- the layout has been well planned to exude intimacy but also a feeling of spaciousness. The spread was adequate. I recommend the peaches and ginger tea if your into spicy sweet. I had the Tropical green which is more on the herbal side.My only objection is the packet sugar. It screams diner and cheapens the experience. Sugar cubes are a must.
There could be more variety with the sandwich options. Too few savories...you pay for the atmosphere more than anything else.
Went last night to revisit our wonderful times seeing Bobby short and Steve tyrell. Things have changed. It is now a packed price gouge featuring has -been talent. MichaelFeinstein was good 20 years ago. Now, he can barely hit the notes. Don’t waste your money
Lapin and I came here to celebrate a milestone. We made reservations almost a month ahead but when we arrived the place was empty. We were seated right near the entrance way but was okay because it gave us the prime spot to people watch. While I was dressed nicely, Lapin just wore a button down and fancy pants/shoes. We read that he needed a jacket but didn’t remember the day of. However, the host just waved us in and said it was okay and not to worry. Perhaps, they assumed the worst of us that day but Lapin was just happy he didn’t have to wear a jacket in the heat. Although, there was a private party in one of the adjacent room and there were teenagers wearing hoodies, sneakers and clearly clothes meant for the club/streetwear along with men who just wore polo t-shirts. To be honest, we felt a bit out of place it was mostly older couples, people who look loaded (anyone single? :P), and some of the people gave a pretentious air about them. Lapin ordered the Cured Foie Gras Torchon ($28). He never had foies gras and was excited to try it and it turns out he isn’t much of a fan. He also ordered the Escargots à la Bourguignonne ($25). It was a decently sized portion but he liked the escargots at Deux Amis the best. I ordered the Brown Butter Crusted Halibut ($39), which was decently sized and tasted okay. It need a bit more salt and flavor but the sauce it was served with made the halibut taste a bit better. Lapin got the Roasted Filet Mignon (8 oz. - $54). He said it was okay but he could make better at home. I find that hard to believe that he can make anything...let alone better than a restaurant. Either way though, he said he didn’t enjoy his steak for the price and wished he ordered something else. For dessert, I ordered the Cheesecake ($17) and the Chocolate Mousse Tower ($16). Both were delicious, decently sized, and beautifully displayed. Sadly though they were not exceptionally noteworthy which I would have expected from this restaurant. We also ordered two glasses of Prosecco, which was good. Lapin finished his shortly after we ordered it and received it. They charged us an automatic 20% ( 15% for the wait staff and 5% for the service captain -- I didn’t see a captain?!). The service was absolutely impeccable. They checked in every couple of minutes, refill our glasses without asking, and also let us sit back and talk after the meal without rushing us (most of the tables were empty, but still nice not to be rushed). While the service is impeccable, I just wished the food was more on point especially for the price.
Great french restaurant, the food was yummy full of flavor, seasoned well and was balanced. They have to work on their plating almost all the dishes I got didn't look good. Staffs are friendly and professional. Overall good restaurant but way too overpriced for ok food.
When you think of the Carlyle you think of high class, high brow jacket eating style and service that should be top notch. We went for the Debbie Harry show which is classy already. The dinner show required you spend at least $75 dollars before exiting the curtain doors. I figured that shouldn’t be too hard to do here. While excitingly waiting for Debbie to come out to enchant us with her voice the meal was like an expensive amuse bouche. I got the roasted chicken and my two friends got the steak. I also started with the shrimp cocktail and everyone else got a house salad with 3 cocktails. The cocktails was not bad. The shrimp cocktail looked a bit sadly plated with 5 ‘jumbo’ shrimps. While I know it is only the café, it could have been at least presented better than the diner on 10th Ave for $26. My roast chicken was super moist and tender at $39, I hope the chicken had a enjoyable life prior. Able to wander free range in the fresh air of Murrays Farm upstate NY before becoming dinner on my plate. The whole 8oz Beef Tenderloin coming in at a whopping $48 was like a Wendy’s commercial of where’s the beef and the 3oz $16 green salad plate looked like it came from the 9oz $3 dollar salad bag at Whole Foods. The $17 New York Cheesecake was well cheesecake. We could barely get water at our table which we asked for 4 times and finally just gave up. I know, this review is beginning to sound like the Visa/Mastercard commercial. And yes, when the lights dimmed and Debbie took stage and spending time with friends was priceless until we got the bill.
We're long time customers for more than 20 years. It's always been magical. But Bemelman's is no longer a well kept secret. Tons of heathen have decended on the place more to be seen then to appreciate it. Headwaiter told us the line would move quickly, but it didn't. We waited more than an hour but didn't get in. It was disappointing to be lied to about it by someone we had dealt with before. They've raised the price to try to filter some of the crowd. But it hasn't worked because unfortunately, there's a lot of rich trash out there. The place is still iconic and beautiful and, as Bobby would have said, 'Swank'. the music, food, drinks and service are still wonderful. But I think, unfortunately, Bemelman's, as we knew it, is over.
The performance was excellent. The decor had an old school charm. The meal was not special, underwhelming and stupidly overpriced. Excellent music and far superior meals can be had elsewhere in New York for a fraction of the price.
It’s all about the entertainment and the location. Food is anywhere from awful to ok. We ordered a Penne with mushrooms. Dish was lukewarm, bland and the pasta was overcooked. Honestly, at the prices they charge they should be ashamed to serve a dish like this. We should have sent it back, but we picked at it and ate half. This was the equivalent of room service at a motel 6. I told the waiter that it wasn’t good, he told me he’d tell the staff so they know the next time we come back. They had a nice cheese plate, but $49 for a small plate is a lot. Best part was the fries, and the butter (bread was soft). The room is gorgeous and we loved the entertainment, but I’m never going back.
Beautiful old school vibe. Service could use some polish and bartenders don't know how to make drinks outside their menu. Stick w menu cocktails or get some wine :) didnt like the old fashioned or French mule they failed miserably making... Trio band comes after 930pm w cover charge of 35 per person. They take 15 min breaks after playing 15 minutes and then disappear after about 11pm. Not impressed w service or apps.
Snobby bartenders. Cool venue full of history. Classy but there is a distinct difference between class and snobbishly rude service.
Really enjoyed Molly Ringwald. She spoke to her audience and she connected well with her musicians. She was entertaining. The Cafe Carlyle dinner was very sub-par and tasteless, yet expensive - a forced minimum price for food and drink made the total experience additionally disappointing. My entrée could have been a "small plates" or tapas-size serving - it certainly was not an entrée portion with only 3 medium-sized scallops??? Ridiculous for the prices on the meal, and the grit in the scallops made it feel as though I got them from a street vender. The lobster in one of the "signature" dishes (also way over-priced - it was mostly pasta) was so tough and tasteless - it seemed it had been frozen again and again. The drinks were good - also expensive - but then most club drinks are in NYC, so no surprise there.
We were there to eat and see Aaron Tveit. He was great, of course. Too short a show, perhaps (about 65 minutes). We got there exactly at our reservation time and were seated immediately. We got a roll immediately (asked for olive oil, never got that). It was then about 30 minutes before our drink and meal orders were taken. This is totally unacceptable especially when were are supposed to finish eating before the show began.. The prices are also unacceptable. $95 for an appetizer and dinner is insane. It's not THAT good. $22 for a maybe 4 ounce pour of Malbec, $13 for a 12 ounce Lagunitas. The checks are not ready until after the show and the checkout procedure is not modern-give a credit card, wait. Check the City Winery for the right way to do all of this.
Amazing atmosphere but two things: they should make a dress code instead of letting people who don't respect the music ruin the enjoyment of tasteful guests. Also, I am highly allergic to nuts and I started getting hives after 30 minutes. 5 stars for service and atmosphere, but rounding it out adds up to 2 stars for the wallpaper (tasteful) and the hives (very not tasteful).
If you want to pay $75 for outback steakhouse food this is your place. It is absolutely pathetic. I paid $59 for steak and fries that should've cost $12 at the most. I paid $19 for a slice of cake that was one of the worst slices of cake I've ever had. They called it "flourless chocolate cake"...should be called "FLAVORLESS chocolate cake". The bread was the only good part. Drinks cost $20 plus. Tables are so close together and cramped that the waiter has to come and move tables around for you to go to the bathroom. They have a $75 food and beverage minimum. They make you tip the waiter and the "captain". The only reason they are not getting one star is because the performance from Hamilton Leithauser was amazing. I'd be okay with paying the exorbitant prices for an intimate concert experience if the food was halfway decent. People need to stand up against this madness.
I have been many times previously and always had a good experience. This time was just awful. I was supposed to have a bar seat and was placed at a seat that would have NO view of the stage. They explained that there were others who had been given the seats with a clear view of the stage. Why? Why did they sell a ticket to a seat that had no view of the stage?? After much complaining, I was seated at a table, which was still a much worse view since there was a tall guy in front of me that blocked my view. Then, the service was incredibly slow. I had to beg to have my steak cooked the way I wanted it. The steak was only okay - not a high quality piece of meat for $97 (came with just mashed potatoes.) The show started a full 30 minutes late. Although the show was excellent, the whole thing has left me with a very sour taste and I doubt I will ever return. Clearly they don't need my business, but this is unacceptable for an evening that cost almost $300.
My wife and I snatched up the Travel Zoo deal for our visit to NYC from Charleston, SC. We love to eat out and the food at home is always incredible so we were looking forward to some high end NYC Restaurants. We had the Travel Zoo prefix menu which had pretty much everything on it that we wanted. We ordered the Muscles & Shrimp Cocktail as an app. They were both just OK. Shortly after finishing our Appetizers we had both polished off our first round of drinks and were looking for more. One of the SA's came by and took our empty glasses but did not offer another round and walked away before we could ask... Then our entrees came out. For our entrees we chose Lobster & Steak. The lobster was drowned in a rich buttery sauce & cheese. It was extremely hard to eat given all of the butter.. The steak I got was burnt on the outside and med-rare in the middle. It was also hard to eat given the nasty charred taste. I eventually started cutting the outside off to eat the middle. By the time we picked at our entrees till we didn't want anymore we still hadn't seen our captain or waiter. No drinks. No one even came by to ask how our food was. We then sat at our table for another fifteen minutes in disbelief as our captain repeatedly looked at us and kept walking. It was blatantly obvious that we were done with our meals & had absolutely nothing to drink. He even made eye contact with me a couple of times. Finally after awhile I was able to lock eyes with the manager who immediately came over. I told him that we had been forgotten about and he apologized. A few minutes later our captain came over and offered coffee with our deserts, totally ignoring the fact that we had just had an awful experience. The deserts were good. The captain offered us 4 chocolate chip cookies for our troubles. Haha. Awful experience.
Wait line to get in...Wait service slow. Had to leave before getting drink. My husband and I gave up our seats so our daughter, who was with a wedding group, could come in They made her stand next to the wall, not near her group, and never offered her a seat or drink. Terrible system.
Sorry to give this just A star, but I went here just to SEE the Woodman. Not annoy him. Not irritate him. Just to see him in person! Fate being what it is, who should I bump into just outside the Men's Room ...?? Herewith, our encounter: ME: [*extremely* sheepishly] Hey, Woody! WOODY: Silence, goyischer fool .... This has nothing to do with CC's food, drink, etc. That's why I'm giving them five stars each in that regard based on reputation. 🖖🏻❤️
The decoration, the history of the artist is all I will give a positive to. The wait to get in to this bar makes the experience so much less than it should be. They should consider making it reservation based, no one likes to wait in a line and by the time people get seated, they are frustrated and creates a tense energy. If you stay at the hotel it’s probably fine i don’t have that experience to tell you, but if you’re here to enjoy jazz and have a nice evening, you'll have to stand for 45 min at least, in a line like a child in a hallway looking through a glass door as others who chose to not sit at the jazz bar drink their drinks. I stood for an hour because I was really curious what the hype was about. After a long wait you expect to be seated but are directed to stand again near the bar awkwardly unless you are persistent and give off an annoyed, “‘entitled vibe”, in which case you may be eventually seated in a corner of the bar. The service understands this place is high demand so they don’t care to be nice or patient with you so be prepared with a quick order and don’t expect to be treated graciously if you have any questions about the cocktails. The first time coming here as a 29 year old woman who loves jazz and was genuinely interested in a good ambiance and music, I left before entering the bar because an 89 year old man came up to me and my friends sizing us as if we wanted to come sit at his table. He said something like turn around let me look at you to approve you getting in faster. We were dressed conservatively yet he had the audacity to address us as if we were working women. We ignored him and left the bar because his disgusting assumptions left us with a sour impression of the place. So I decided to return because a friend recommended this place and I came back to try it again with my mother dressing even more conservatively, making sure I would not give off the impression I was looking for a man just because I was either young or good looking. I was sized by every entitled 40year old woman who thought I was about to steal her husband or date. I have never felt so uncomfortable at an establishment where I am ready, willing and excited to give my money in order to have a nice classy night out. If I must be old blonde or a man to enjoy this bar, then I’m sorry but I’d like to try out some other places. What an entirely entitled bar. Maybe when I’m wrinkled or walking in with a man will I be treated better, because clearly kindness, patience, and class did not work for me two times in a row.though I’ll likely never come back and give my money to this establishment.
Peter Cincotti was fabulous but the dining experience was awful. Tables are way too small for a full dinner, too rushed, too crowded, waiters were angry and very expensive food was sub par.
The overall atmosphere is a great environment for seeing a show and Dianna Agron was fantastic. The good stops there. The service was the worst I’ve experienced in Manhattan. On average, drinks took 40+ minutes to arrive and any time we inquired on the status, the waiters acted as if we were ordering drinks for the first time. Our credit card was lost at the end of the night while attempting to pay which just capped off a bad night. The manager was kind in offering to cover the bill, but it still resulted in us having to cancel our card that couldn’t be found despite us waiting by the till the entire time to close out.
It was almost unfathomably bad service. We ordered drinks, which took 30 minutes to come. They were wrong, the refresh came at an hour and 10 minutes after we had arrived. The seats are tight and uncomfortable. Because of this, the waiters need to squeeze through (was bumped 20+ times throughout the night). Then a waiter dropped a coke and spilled all over everyone in the section. They literally lost our card when charging the bill (after we had to tell them twice to take the charge off for the drinks that we sent back). Finally the manager stepped in and had to agree to not charge us. Truly unbelievable for the Carlyle hotel.
I rarely leave negative reviews, but my experience at this restaurant was truly disappointing. While the food itself was good, the service was absolutely terrible and ruined the evening. From the beginning, our waiter never introduced himself, never mentioned any specials, and didn’t even bother to ask if we were ready to order. We had to call him over just to place our order. I asked for steak tartare as an appetizer and Bronzino as my main course. About 15 minutes later, the captain came to our table acting as though he was about to take our order again, which left us confused since we had already placed it. When we told him so, he seemed frustrated and started removing our menus from the table, in a manner like as it was our fault that the menus were still on a table, asking then why the waiter didn’t remove the menus. When the food finally arrived, a different waiter brought me a dinner-sized steak tartare instead of the appetizer portion I had ordered. I pointed this out, and he said he would “fix” it. Ten minutes later, yet another staff member came over—not to apologize, but to argue with me, insisting there was only one size of steak tartare on the menu. If that’s the case, why did the waiter say he would change it? The staff clearly weren’t communicating with each other and left us feeling uncomfortable. To make matters worse, our drinks took about 40 minutes to arrive. Overall, the service was disorganized, unprofessional, and by far the worst dining experience I have ever had—especially at a place that calls itself a luxury restaurant. I cannot recommend this restaurant based on the service we received.
The reputation does not precede the Carlyle Cafe. The atmosphere is dated but semi-elegant. Their dress code is old fashioned and not needed; times have changed-get with the times! Purchased tickets to see a performer that I had been wanting to see. I was so happy she was performing at The Carlyle as it is a smaller venue and I would get to be up close with the performer. I plaid extra for VIP/Premium Seating. When I arrived (40 min before my allotted time) I was stuck in a a table in a row of 6 tables. The people on each side of me were so close you would think we were the same party. Being forced to dine with the Cafe is the only way they would get patrons-their food Sucks. Their staff is horrible. The room is cramped-the waitstaff continued to bump my chair-never saying excuse me. After paying a premium for the show tickets-I was VERY unhappy to be seated in a squished seating-and then. Forced to purchase over priced food. My glass if Chardonnay was $30 while my after dinner coffee was $15. I don’t mind paying for good food, I have been to restaurants and paid $550 per person for a tasting menu and enjoyed every moment and bite. But to pay $95 for a small salad and steak tartare in a cramped room with rude staff; isnt my cup of tea. LOVED the performance, LOVED it. They wait until the end of the performance to bring everyone-Yes, everyone in the venue (over 60) their checks. Yep, 60 plus checks-and cc-tho be handleded at one time-I had to stand and wait over 20 min to pay and get my cc back. Inefficient. Did I mention their staff is rude? Yes, well, let me mention it a 4th time. RUDE!
