I grew up on Tom Wahl's and love to continue the tradition with my kids. The root beer is fantastic, the ground steak is one of my favorites but even better, they make accommodations so that my mom, who has celiac can enjoy the food too!

Great food, burgers are made from steak. The hod dogs are great, split, and any toppings. Place looks like a 50’s Diner! The root beer is really good, would definitely recommend eating here!

Super good and super big location for Tom Wahls. A great addition to Newark. It's always busy. The service is good. Burgers, hots, and plates are tasty!! Not my favorite overall plate but still very good. Slightly spicy meat sauce.

It was really good!! I've always loved Tom Wahls! Pretty greasy but I expect it for burgers. I got the bleu cheeseburger which was phenomenal and my husband got the wahl burger which he enjoyed. You can play music on the jukebox which is awesome! I love the environment there it's so family friendly, perfect for a date night!!

Tom Wahl's always has great food and good selection of soft drinks and sides. I especially love their Wahlburgers and their own special Root Beer!

Food is always hot, fresh and delicious! During this time of the pandemic, they are on top of cleaning. Constantly wiping down tables, doors, wearing masks and gloves. Definitely felt that safety and cleanliness was at the forefront here. Kudos to Tom Wahl's!

Tom Wahl's is an excellent spot to get a burger. The Newark location has a ton of seating. They have poster sized photos of old Newark school/team photos. It is a burger and fries place, so you kind of know what your meal is going to be like. Heaping order of hot fries. Burgers were delicious. Hot food was hot! I highly recommend the root beer in an icy mug. Really good. Bathroom was clean.

I felt so loved and warm inside. It felt like the cashier was giving me a hug. Though the choice of music was questionable, I'd still give it a 12/10 for the magnifical food and atmosphere. I'm tearing up just thinking about it.

The food was excellent! Definitely a staple to try if you're new to the area and looking for an experience. The junker plate sounds weird, but try it and you won't regret it. The flavoring that they put into their mixes for the meat sauce is delicious. Well worth the visit.

I LOVE Tom Wahl's! I brought my students here and everyone was impressed. The burgers are fresh, hand made and so flavorful. The house made root beer is awesome, especially as a float. With quality and service as excellent as this, it's not surprising that Tom Wahl's is such a successful local chain!

Overall another satisfied customer. I took the food to go. It was good. They cooked faster than the estimated time on the phone call. Which would normally be good for eating there. But since it was pickup the was as hot as it should have been or expected. The cheese curds were magnificent as expected. I say expected because this isn’t my usual Tom Wahls. Had not been for a while since we moved .. still a great burger! Did have a coupon which made it even better . It is clean ... absolutely perfect staff !! They have a jalapeño cheddar burger with raw jalapeños instead of pickled ones . Super hot . They also have great hot sauce ! Have dill and sweet pickles. Sure missed this place !

Tom Wahls makes the best burgers. No joke, I live in another state and every time I visit a place with Tom Wahls, I make it a point to stop. This makes it three days in a row on this trip I've had a burger at Tom Wahls. And the amazing root beer in a frosted mug is the best! I've tried many types of expensive gourmet root beers and brewed root beers and nothing beats Tom Wahls root beer. I really wish they'd open a franchise out in the west. Don't forget to check their website for coupons! They have one for buy one burger get a free one for this whole year, when I checked today. Edit: Came back on another trip. Up to about 5 burgers in a week this trip. Still the best burger place and I've been to quite a few out west.

Oh. My. Goodness. I like spicy, but this sauce should seriously come with a disclaimer. Also, there was no meat in it— shouldn’t there be meat in it? However, my plate was good enough— honestly hard to enjoy eating because of how spicy it is. I love eating whole jalapeños and throwing a couple habeneros into my chili, but this is insanity. Something is off.

It is what it is modern fast food "sloppy burger" would-be retro diner. The meat was cooked as well is it could be but be warned that this style of burger is purposely over greasy. You'll want to flip it over and eat it upside down if greasy fingers upset you. I also recomend eating this style burger over your fries, not your plate, those kringle cut pre frozen fired can be a touch dry otherwise. The root beer was a step up from a generic Pepsi product, but not by much. If your a big fan of small batch or craft root beer (or sasparilla soda) then give it a try but keep your expectations at "fast food" level.

Like the remodel. Food is always good. Fun place to take the kids. They have a car show/rally during the week (not sure what day) but in the summer it's a fun place to take the kids, grab some food and checked out the cars.

Tara was an amazing counter person! I had an old coupon. For $6 cheeseburger meal. She couldn't get the computer to give me the meal for that price. So she asked for help. Another lady told her that she was told to charge to the nearest item they had listed. Tara tried it. But it would be $9+. So Tara told her and I that that wasn't right. Its supposed to be what the coupon states. Tara got the override card. She worked hard to get it to give it to me for the coupon price. She told me that if we're accepting competitors coupons or our expired coupons there has to be away to do it. So the other lady came back and helped Tara figure out how to get the $6. Tara apologized to me and the customers behind me. Everyone was understanding! Unfortunately I my friend had half of her meal eaten. Before my order was even cooked. So that was awkward! But I truly appreciate Tara's diligence to making my meal exactly what my coupon was for. Thank you Tara for incredible customer service!

We have been going there for years. Love the food but it's getting too expensive. Stopped for lunch - $15.30. Bacon cheeseburger $7.69; fries $3.99; small drink $2.79. Will think hard about going again. On the plus side, they do a BOGO free cheeseburger that can defray some cost.

Burgers are pretty tasty. I had the mushroom swiss burger. It was a little greasy but nothing wrong with that. It just shows its a fresh burger. The curly fries were tasty. I had the Root beer since its Tom Wahls and why not ! Its a little pricey but its better quality than the fast food burgers so thats reasonable.

Food is always fresh and good, they have some variety on the menu, and the service is always solid. Garbage plate is better than most. Prices are reasonable, especially when compared with the fast-food burger joints in town. Only complaint is that I wish they would salt/season the fries.

Tom Wahl's is always a fave (over bill gray's). The steak sandwiches or burgers are always good just a little sloppy. I love adding meat sauce to it but it can be a little too spicy for my liking. They should consider and small batch of non spicy meat sauce as an option.

I go here several times a year and absolutely love the burgers! Tom whals burgers are honestly the best, but at this location they always seem to mess up my orders which is something they really need to work on. Love the fact that they are redoing the building even though it was in perfectly good shape before. Shows that owner cares about his business and wants the best for his customers.

Newly renovated. Looks great inside and out and still has that reto diner look. Food is still delicious. Big fan of the steak only beef product for the burgers. A step above most other fast food style restaurants. Only complaint is of course it's a little pricey, but you get what you pay for. Love how they use pagers tho. Very convenient.

Love the remodel at the Newark Tom Wahl's. The burgers are always fresh and yummy. Customer service could be made a bigger priority at this location. Very clean inside the restaurant. Love the junker plates and the meat sauce is to die for! Not sure when they do the special on the junker plates at this location?? Doesn't say on their website.

Always the best choice for fast food. Everything is expensive now. Only the downside I can come up with is you don't have a sugar substitute. When I asked, I was told you do not and offered to give me sweet tea. Many people don't and can not drink sweetened drinks. Keep up the great work, I will return.

We stumbled across this place driving through and looked like a mix between Culver’s and Steak ‘n Shake and had great reviews so we gave it a shot. The inside was very clean and it had a retro feel with the music and decor. The service was okay, nothing exceptional but not bad. The prices seemed abnormally high, it was almost $12 for a #1 cheeseburger meal! I might be wrong but I don’t think the patty was even 1/3 lb, but the flavor was excellent. The crinkle fries were also really good. The homemade root beer was sweet and creamy, and reminded me of A&W. Overall I recommend this place but the prices just seemed way too high for what you got. It should’ve been priced around $7-8.

The garbage plate was good and very filling. The place was as clean as it could be for NY in winter. I would recommend, if you very hungry and need something quick.

Pretty large "hamburger stand", with a bit of a 50's vibe. Lots of pictures of the original location and crew. The Wahlburger was a little greasy, but tasted very good. The fish sandwich was good and way to large for the roll.

Aesthetic: 5 stars Food: 2.5 stars We used to love this place when we lived in the area and recently visited for the first time in 4 years. The food definitely tasted different (the burgers seemed a different consistency, they were soggy and had to be eaten with utensils because of it, everything was more bland especially the Mac salad) but we’ll chalk it up to a fluke and try again someday. Husband said the root beer was still 10/10. Still an extremely aesthetically pleasing place to eat for that retro vibe.

I didn't get what I ordered on my burger. My grandson's chicken tenders tasted like fish. Good thing he's not allergic to fish.

Order from Tom Wahls about once a week. During the day, you get better service rather than night. The older woman that runs the cashier during the day is absolutely excellent, but often times she is the only one working the front. There is a lot of individuals with poor attitudes and lacking in respectful manners, especially with over the phone service. Managers I have seen on duty are not very helpful to their staff. I have seen employees ask managers for assistance and for the managers to roll their eyes and scowl. In addition, a majority of the employees act as if the customers are a nuisance.

Haven't been to Tom Wahls in about 8 years. Got the 55 Junker (their version of a garbage plate). Was dissapointed in the flavor, very bland and overly spicy. The house Root Beer was watery and the staff was not at all friendly. Really a shame since when I lived in the area I enjoyed going there. I guess sit down restaurants are really getting killed, and the visit here was a prime example of such.

The young gentleman who took my order was great! I think he was still in training. But...... Now the gentleman who gave me my order, his shorts were hanging off his butt. After I said something the manager also told him to pull them up. My boys loved the garbage plates, but, should have been marked. I got one with cheese, and one without. With all the stuff on top? It was very hard to figure it out. Plus, my youngest is allergic to dairy. My burger was dry and not as I ordered it. The manager was great! She had a great big smile and was running the pass like a pro!!!!

Very nice location. Resembles burger joints from long ago. Atmosphere hits it right on. Older woman taking orders not very friendly. On three occasions in row, the mood has not changed. On this occasion I tried the fish sandwich which in my opinion was average at best.

Burger to go was stashed and abundance of French fries. $14. Cost was high.

We found the prices to be fairly high, even after using a coupon. The newly remodeled building is nice but not worth the price increases. Also didn't like the cheeseburger bun falling apart and then needing to eat my cheeseburger with a fork and knife.

First time visit. Awesome dining atmosphere. Prices for basically fast food were a bit steep. We spent $40 on 2 happy hour floats, a garbage plate, and a fish dinner. (Neither meal came with a drink might I add.) I don't think we will be visiting again. Food was hot and fresh but okay at best.

VERY expensive, paid a little over $50 for four meals (3 small drinks came to $7). Food was good, messed up one order, fixed it. Normally we don't eat here, looking at the receipt, I remember why.

The food was okay, but every table in the place needed to be wiped down. Maybe they just finished the dinner rush just before I got there, but there were only a couple of tables occupied when we arrived and the staff just didn't seem interested in cleaning tables until we were almost done eating.

18 bucks for a grey bland burger patty and bland crinkle cut fries. Was my first time trying Tom Wahls and wasn't impressed. 5 Guys is cheaper and much much much better. Freddy's steak burgers are much better. Burger King across the street is half the price and better. Season the food and char the burger and wouldn't be so bad. Restaurant itself is a cool setting.

Walked in 20 min before closing. We told they closed in 20 min and the dinimg room would be closed, was that alright? We knew what time it was. Bottom buns were soaked with grease, which made it almost impossible to pick up and eat in our car. Not very inviting.

Don't get take out unless you want a smashed burger 😒

Usually decent food, a little pricey in some areas. Ordered online and paid extra to have an additional side and did not receive the fries I asked for. When I noticed the mistake I called and was answered completely unprofessionally, not even greeted just asked to "hold on" while the person asked where Mike was and then continued to have no response while there was giggling in the background. No attempt made to talk to me or notify what was going on. Do not recommend.

Way overpriced. The burgers were bland. The bun was pretty good though. The fries were bland as well. Asked for lettuce and pickles on the burger, didn't get any of that. Got a $2 root beer float because it was happy hour and that was really good and big. If I had to pay full price I wouldn't have got it. Doubt I'll ever be back, the food just wasn't that good for the price they charge.

They give you a crap ton of fries and a thin burger that’s 75% bun and sauce and barely seasoned. The root beer is amazing, so I will give them that. This place is way over priced though. It cost $90 for the five of us to eat dinner there tonight. Not worth it at all!

This used to be a great spot to go eat now it's kind of ridiculous the atmosphere is horrible the workers don't even read the order receipts I've ordered there twice in a row now and have gotten the wrong orders I can pass by a couple mistakes but I ordered three burgers with everything on it don't even get meat sauce and let's be real that's the reason I go I did t even eat the burgers I ordered the one thing they can do right is give a refund even called back talk to chase the manager I asked why I didn't get what I ordered but he just says it's a mistake I get it if it was one burger wrong but all three that's negligence especially since it's always the meat sauce missing on two different orders when I got there to pick up my order there was a little blonde girl who gave me my bag didn't read the receipt waited on another customer while I waited for my drinks that she didn't get ready until I told her since I told her she literally scowled acted as if I'm a inconvenience to her sorry I wanted what I paid for I would like some action taken by the managers or even higher ups i worked in these places before its not hard and it wasn't busy I'm highly disappointed

Not very good. Every thing had a bad aftertaste. Seemed like the oil in the fryer was old. Then we had ice cream and that didn't really have much taste at all. Very disappointed. Never had a problem there before.

There are nothing but teenagers who work there And they could care less about customers. They are more concerned about cleaning the walls outside in the vestibule than they are about customers. I have actually seen and heard them sigh as soon as we walked through the door. It's like their job is nothing but doing tasks that a manager assigns and completes them. Customers just get in the way of that. And now it is way too expensive!

It was honestly the worst garbage plate I've had, the fries were soggy, the Mac salad had no flavor, and the sauce was terrible. Go to Salvatores if you want a good garbage plate. The place is also usually filthy with the people who wipe the tables down sagging their pants.

Sorry but I did not have a good meal. Every Friday my granddaughter and her granddad come here for fish sandwich. They love it. I have always declined due to the past times my meal was nasty. I decided not would go. I ordered the Italian said sausage. I wasn’t asked if I wanted anything on it so I was thinking it came with peppers and onions. Nope. I received a very dried out very flat sausage Roll was perfect if you had a huge burger or fish. I’m not kidding you when I say it was less then 1/4 inch thick. Nothing offered on it. I did not take it back due to the very hectic counter. I figured I would eat my onion rings. This visit made me realize I’m not missing out. Thanks.

Burger was very cold, not enjoyable at all ask for cheese fries which had to be accommodated for because they only make chili chess fries. When they gave me the fries was sprinkled with barely any cheese and I asked about cheese sauce and wasn't told there wasn't any cheese sauce.
