Not from this area and I spotted this coo little spot called Jose’s Mexican food. I have to say with out a doubt that my Chili Colorado was the bast I’ve ever had and that saying a lot for me. Will definitely be back if ever in town. A++. Do yourself a favor and stop by and your Welcome 👍🏽
So happy we stumbled upon this place. Not only was the food delicious, this is the cleanest restaurant ever. Their salsa should be bottled and sold else where. Service was also prompt and friendly. Yum!!!
I've been going here for over 10 years. I've never had a bad experience. One of the most consistent Mexican restaurants around. Friendly staff but sometimes the wait can get long. Go early, avoid crowds!
First time visiting Monterey and stumbled upon this jewel.. The food, drinks and service were superb.. Rebecca you were amazing and thank you for sharing with us some local venues..
Great food and cocktails and the price is reasonable. I had the Chile Verde plate and a Cadillac Margarita. Delicious
Great menu however; there is a standout dish at this restaurant which, is a must have! Do not confuse this restaurant for providing the "average" Mexican fare you are you used to. Think I'm lying? Well, go to Jose's and order the Chimichanga with shredded beef. The slow cooked meat delivers so much flavor it will change a bad day to good. Paired with a cold beer or margarita and you'll feel like royalty.
Food was delicious. We ordered the carniasada plate with the cheese enchilada. Great flavor, great seasoning. The meat was super tender. The enchilada sauce was the best I've ever tasted. The customer service was also amazing.
We have been coming to Jose's since it's been in this location, we've never had a meal that was less than VERY good. 20+ years of consistency, flavor, and always friendly staff. Their consistency is incredible. I cook, some have accused me of being a "chef"......whatever . I don't/can't cook as consistently as Jose's prepares their meals. The beef particularly, is ALWAYS tender, with great flavor. Whenever we visit Monterey, we always visit Jose's at least once. It's a great place for lunch, we occasionally take a little "road trip", to pick up fresh pasta at Bigoli Pasta (it's right around the corner from Jose's). Always excellent, amazing consistency. A++
Great Mexican food, family run, cheerful atmosphere, small bar area, TVs on wall, and reasonable prices. The fajitas, burritos, and enchiladas are all good. Watch out: the sweet drinks (i.e. blended strawberry margaritas) are intentionally made extra sweet because the management believes that's the way customers want it. If that's what you want, great, otherwise order a lime-based drink. Update, almost a year later. Been back numerous times, still great food and service. It can be crowded on a Friday evening since it's popular. Will return.
Had the carnitas super burrito, I don’t regret it for a second. Took me to flavor town. Red Salsa might be an acquired taste. I found it slightly bitter, which may have just caught me off guard. I favored the green salsa with a strong jalapeño/cilantro flavor. The super burrito was excellent.
We love Jose's. Our daughter was grown on Jose's fajitas! It was all I craved while I was pregnant-- we were there just about every day. The owner and his family and their staff are great, friendly, and will get you seated and fed in no time. Parking is a little weird if you are coming in on Del Monte from Monterey, but just take a breath and don't give up on getting to this place. You have to turn right on Broadway even though it looks like you can turn into the lot from Del Monte.
I've eaten here quite a few time and every time their food is always great. I suggest their enchiladas because the sauce is amazing, the nachos are very good here too there's very few places I'll order nachos and this is deff one of them. Burritos are a really good size and filling. Their seafood is always really tasty, I haven't been here enough to try everything but one day I will! Also they make really good Margaritas and deff try their michiladas! And also there's usually a great selection of local draft beers.
Great family local restaurant. Draft beer and great guacamole when it is avocado season. Beans and rice are clean nice food. Ask for the green salsa or you will only get the red both are wonderful. Right now only take out due to our third COVID-19 closure. Double order of beans and rice lasts us a week.
Felt like I ate a home cooked meal from my grandmother! Everything was fresh and deliciously authentic! Great service! Everyone greats you at the door with a smile! Love it here!
My boyfriend and I had the Cadillac Margaritas and two platters of chicken, steak, and shrimp fajitas. The waitresses were attentive, nice, and the food didn't take long to come out. When we got our platter it was huge! It was filled with grilled bell peppers, steak, chicken, and shrimp, a heaping serving of pinto beans with cheese and rice. We walked away paying only $70 and we had another round of delicious Margaritas! I forgot to take pictures but this is worth the visit!
Excellent Mexican foods. I have dined at Jose's many times and always enjoyed it very much. In addition to the quality of the food, the staff is so nice and friendly. I highly recommend Jose's!
1/4/23 Jose's is one of a few Homestyle cooking and friendly hospitality restaurants, like visiting family one of a few in the Monterey County area. I ordered Red Chili Colorado plate served with rice, beans and salad, the sauce is a mild Mole thick style sauce, if you need a little more heat just add the delicious table salsa that is part of their complimentary with fresh Tortilla Chips. Jose's has been consistent with their cooking and service for the many years I have visited. Thank you all.
Top notch authentic Mexican food!! A small but mighty place, the food is absolutely amazing! The service is so kind, friendly, and unbeatable. The epitome of the "hole in a wall" place you wished you heard about because it is AMAZING! Ps order the 'off menu' bean dip, it's to die for!
First time to Jose’s and it was terrific. Very friendly staff. Food was great sit down home cooking style. I had a two carnitas enchiladas plate with beans and rice and it was solid! The enchilada sauce was very rich and almost a mole. The salsa that came with the chips was very flavorful and just the right amount of heat. The Cadillac margarita was delicious. Served in a pint glass on the rocks. A generous cocktail.
Im my opinion Jose's is some of the best mexican food here in town . And definitely my favorite salsa . The staff is very nice and have always accommodated any special request . It's a small restaurant so your always week taken care . Always the same staff great food great people. 👍 i would definitely recommend this place . No breakfast opens in the afternoon
Jose's is super good authentic Mexican food. We got there late on a Friday night. Nancy, was so helpful, attending, a wonderful waitress! Our food was excellent! Our drinks were very good, heavy pours. The place is clean, quiet, and I would hang out here every week, if I lived closer!
We enjoyed a delicious lunch here and will be back for sure! Jose's felt very warm and homey. The server was very knowledgeable and was quick to provide extra help with our toddler. She also understood my wife's gluten allergy and most of their food can be made gluten free. The food is delicious and the platters are a good value for the price, which was reduced for their lunch specials. I highly recommend Jose's!
We stopped into Monterey during a short road trip along the coast. Getting in later than we'd expected, after checking into our hotel, we searched Google maps and found this little gem in Seaside. This is a small, well decorated Mexican restaurant that has a coastal feel to it (being on the coast, no wonder). We walked in the door and were greeted by employees at the bar a few feet from the front. The employees were pleasant and attentive beginning to end. The table was clean and had the menu under the table glass top. I personally didn't prefer the salsa (I like chunkier salsa with lots of cilantro), but my travel partner loved it. The chips were really good. My partner had a pork burrito, and I had the chicken tostada. The rice and beans were classic. My meal was very good. It was pleasant to see mixed lettuce rather than just iceberg for once! Partner enjoyed his meal, too. I would definitely come here again.
Absolutely magical enchiladas. Great food and service. What more could you ask for? Highly recommend. What are you waiting for?
Not easy to find good traditional mexican food in Monterey area. Jose's is the best, most consistent in my opinion. Friendly staff as well.
The food was excellent, and we'll definitely return whenever we're in the area.
If you're looking for delicious fair priced authentic Mexican food this place is the place to go. The service is fast, friendly, and overall great. Portions are pretty big and the atmosphere is very nice. Definitely would recommend, and will be back
Been coming here for years. Family owned and they work it which shows they care for their long timing guest. Food is quite good. Their chips and salsa are to die for..favorite local spot to go. Prices are varying reasonable for food and spirits.
The staff were super attentive food was fast, fresh and everything ordered was great. The chips were good, the guacamole was just right, the salsas were tasty. If your in the area and the parking lot is full there is plenty to be found on the street in the right around the corner by the carwash. .
Jose’s is great. It has been our Mexican food standard for the last few years. Staff is super friendly and attentive. Food is great and nicely priced. Fish tacos and shrimp fajitas are fresh, yum and they provide generous portions all around. If the standard salsa is not for you just ask for the mild and hot (green) salsas.
Very excited we found this spot! We tried to go to another spot and were treated poorly, so we decided to check Jose's out. The staff is super friendly, the food was very good, and the prices were right! Customary free chips and salsa were great too.
There's nothing bad to say about this place everything is awesome.
I can't say enough about Jose's! The staff is kind and the restaurant is clean and cozy. I have been coming here for over 2 decades and everytime they provide high quality service and delicious food. The garlic shrimp tacos and the carnitas super burrito are my personal favorites. Make sure to try their Micheladas!
I have gone to this restaurant for 25 years and it never disappoints. Tostadas and Carnitas are exceptional
Top notch food and friendly, attentive staff. Service of our main course was a little slow, otherwise they would be 5 stars.
This place was exactly what we were looking for. Food was absolutely delicious, margaritas were on point and service was wonderful. I would eat there every day if it was in my neighborhood!
Been coming here for 5 years and it has always been a place of great comfort and delicious food. The staff really makes you feel at home - combine that with great drinks, classic Mexican options and relaxing atmosphere and you’re all set. Highly recommended. It’s also one of the only spots in Seaside with a full bar. 👌
Great family place. We are travelers this week and felt super welcomed when we walked in and the whole stay. I'm really picky about my chimichangas and this one was perfect! Portions are large, we got lots of drink refills, the place is really clean, loved it all! Well done Jose's 👏 keep it up!
The place has good food run by good people. We had a great time having dinner there and we'll be back the next time we're in town
The best value for Mexican food in town. I got the three items combination plate for about $23. The portions were so large it lasted me 3 meals. The food was delicious.
We’re visiting from Idaho and wanted some yummy Mexican close to our hotel. We felt like we were in a restaurant at home! It was so cute and welcoming. We had the sweetest waitress who paid extra attention to our 4 year old and his special mermaid he got on our trip. Food was delicious (crab enchiladas pictured), and the horchata was amazing. We will be back next time we’re in town!
Best Mexican food! What I love the best is when you cut into their chimichanga, you get all the good bits of meat, cheese, rice, and beans...even at the ends where most places don't pack it in. Ask for extra quac and you'll be in heaven. Get the shredded beef. They are amazing. Friendly servers, cold drinks, and a great chill vibe.
Great experience, very nice, friendly and charming people. Food was delicious. Clean and well maintained restaurant. Highly recommend
We love this place! The food is good and the margaritas are amazing! Nancy, Brian, and Elizabeth make amazing drinks and are so friendly! We always feel at home here!! Highly recommend- the enchiladas are chef’s kiss!
Authentic home made Mexican where the waiter will explain all about the menu and let you know if they think you are ordering to much as the portions are large. Really great atmosphere and margarita's.
Go here for Shrimp Nachos! Or anything else on the menu too :) Eating at Jose’s means that you will encounter some of the kindest folks that either work here or they come here to eat - they will treat you like family and whether you’re just getting to-go food or sitting at the bar, it’s always good food and conversation.
Super friendly folks and great food. We had carnitas (very flavorful and perfectly crispy), fish tacos, and a shredded beef super burrito. It was all wonderful. We also had a tamarind margarita (highly recommend) and Modelo Negra (very nice that they have it on tap)
For the posts about paying extra for sour cream and guacamole, you want that, that is how you know it is a good restaurant. This is the old style Mexican restaurant I drive circles around downtown looking for. I always have thought of these as Sinaloa style. We saw Jose's and circled around the block. For full disclosure, I am allergic to onions. Some Sinaloa restaurants use onions in their hot sauce and some don't. This one does so I had to just look at the sauce. After a misfire on a burrito that has onion pico (the order was for without onion but they got it mixed up with my daughter's burrito which was good because she also meant to order without onion), I ordered the carnita tacos which were really good. My two youngest kids had hamburgers and my oldest daughter actually ordered real food. Everyone was happy.

Easy parking. Inside & outside dining. Comfortable seating. Nice array on menu from ala carte Mexican Cuisine to Exotic Mexican Specialties with shrimp, steak, pork or chicken. Custom vegetable dishes and sides. Complementary fresh tortilla chips with salsa. Friendly staff and service. My love for Jose's Mexican Food combined with love for western heritage is a welcome home.
This is the spot! Ny partner and I have been on a California road trip all week, we decided to stay the night in Monterey before heading back up north. Joses food first of all is very fresh and well made. The portions are generous. Our server Brian was super accommodating and made us feel right at home. I wish i asked the young lady who served our drinks name was: she was very sweet and welcoming as well. Highly recommend!
Just made a quick stop for lunch on the way out of town. It's a cozy, unpretentious neighborhood restaurant, unlike the tourist traps downtown. Our server had a thousand-watt smile and was very attentive. And the food was delicious! The house salsa was smoky and very different from what I'm used to. A pleasure!
Consistently excellent on all levels. The staff is so kind, welcoming, and competent. Food and margaritas are fairly priced. I highly recommend Jose's.
Server Samantha was outstanding, so friendly. Food was excellent Had shredded beef flautas and veggie burrito.

I loved the food! It looks like a little hole in the wall place but it was so much more! The staff were so friendly and our dinner was ordered and reached us in good time! I would definitely recommend this place to everyone!
Really nice staff and good food. It did take a really long time for the food to come out, but they did make sure we had chips the whole time. Small place, not great for big groups because it can only fit maybe one or two bigger groups. But would recommend!
We came from out of town and couldn't find a good mexican restaurant. Jose's was great! Food was good, service was excellent! I wish I could remember the waitress name but we left her a good tip, she deserved it, we will return.
Lunch was Great. Full of flavor & the chicken enchiladas & beef tacos were really good. Service was quick, even though there was a delay in receiving our food. Highly Recommended !!
Excellent Mexican cuisine which at first we didn't even give a chance cuz it was pricey. I mean $8 sumthin for guac. But after washing our x next door we were so hungry we gave in and actually found it to be comparable to taco bell prices. By that I mean the bill for us both was $24+$6 tip, and we spend that at T.B. Less food maybe but way better quality, flavor and nutrition as the tradeoff. It was bomb food so it gets 4/5 *s from me.
One of our favorite Mexican restaurants. Great service, good food and an overall family feel.
Enjoyed my meal. Had a simple red enchilada with ground beef, a side of sour cream and an iced tea. Slight deduction for not having Splenda for my tea, and for some reason tonight their salsa tasted blah. But no matter, everything else fresh and deliciously prepared and service is always spot on. This makes my 5th or 6th visit I think and I'll keep going back. More items I'd like to try. To note, I usually get the steak and shrimp fajitas and they are bomb too! Sorry no photos this time.
I will tell you if you're in town and you have a chance to stop into this little spot you will absolutely love it it's off the beaten path on style cooking my wife could not stop Heating and shrimp cocktail it was the best we had since being in Cabo San Lucas
I really enjoyed the staff. They are friendly. I tried the lunch special which consisted of a beef enchilada, beef tostada, rice & beans. It was tasty and filling. nothing bad to mention. worth your money.
Small place but very busy was here on a Friday night and it was packed. Had a very small local cantina feel to it, staff was very friendly. Quite noisy but then again it was a Friday night so it's to be expected. Had the chicken nachos and they were very good lots of cheese and a good amount of meat, Did not skimp on the cheese I would say at least 3/4 to a full pound of cheese on them. Spices on chicken were good but reminded me more of a Jamaican Jerk chicken then mexican.
Pleasant little place. Nice people. Good food. Reasonable prices.
Didn't have high hopes. Driven past the place many times but decided to stop. Food was pretty amazing. Traditional Mexican food with some very fresh ingredients. Took awhile for the food to come out the kitchen but was not disappointed when it did. Parking lot was a little funky to get into. Excellent experience.
Good food and service, prices were reasonable, some parking available.
The tortilla soup was ok at best, the cheese overpowered everything else. Not much flavor, I had to add my salsa and lemons to give it something. The chips however is the best I ever had.... I know, strange
Such a cute Mexican restaurant off of Del Monte in Seaside. (The entrance to the parking lot is on Broadway). The decorations and ambience were both colorful and fun. Our waitress was super welcoming and attentive. Unfortunately, the food was very frustrating. I say frustrating because they CAN be better. The potential for amazing food is clearly there, but there were a couple of stumbles that made it hard to swallow. For example, their red salsa was amazing, full of flavor and tasted fresh. On the other hand, the green salsa, while still fresh tasting and had a good level of heat, was bland, very under-seasoned and needed more acidity and salt. The beans were blended smooth and creamy; I liked them, my lunch date did not. Steak fajitas - awesome, tamale - broken and cooked unevenly. Shrimp cocktail: the tomato sauce with avocado and onion was great! I probably could have drank it. Then... We got to the shrimps in the shrimp cocktail...the texture and taste were clear indicators that they were frozen precooked shrimps. You might be able to do serve that in a land-locked state but not in Monterey, where other local restaurants are serving fresh shrimp. Hopefully they find a way to bring consistency to the taste and quality of all their dishes. Currently, it almost taste like different cooks are making different sauces and dishes. It is definitely a place that I want to come back to and maybe even bring guests.
Super fresh mom and pop taqueria. Everything had fresh ingredients and was made to order. Don't miss the ground beef tacos...I know what you are thinking...but it was great! Service was fast and friendly, the restaurant was clean and well maintained. The highlight of Mexican food on my visit to Monterey.
This is a small quiet restaurant. Friendly service and speedy meals. They do a good business in margaritas. My combo hit the mark. There is a small parking lot adjacent shared by the three shops.
Busy but it didn't effect service or food quality. Salsa is distinctive- must try! Parking is limited but during dinner it wasn't an issue because other businesses that use parking weren't open.
Service was amazing and the beer was cold. Red salsa could use a little more heat and the green could use some flavor. Meal was good but pricey. Overall I liked it, just wasn't exactly my preferred flavor.

We went there today and this was 2/12, their food was okay. It had some flavor, but, it needs more flavor. Their nachos were delicious except their cheese was wayyy to much! Their guacamole needed some flavor to it! I had two tacos one ground beef and one carne asada definitely needs more flavor! Their chile relleno the cheese was extremely runny, but the flavor in that was good! My daughter had chicken fajitas needs mor flavor she was not impressed, my grandson had chicken enchiladas, i will say the red sauce on those were delicious! Their rice was eh okay, needed more flavor and the beans didnt taste like they were homemade. Although our serverElizabeth was amazing...if i goback i would want her as my server, shes very kind and extremely effecient! If i go back i hope they improve the flavoring of their food! But, who knows they may change up some recipes. I will also put this 9n yelp!!! But try it there you may enjoy it!
Ate here twice. First time was great. Nachos were exceptionally good. Carne Asada burritos were disappointing - mostly beans & rice with bland Carne asada. Burritos were impossible to eat without fork & knife.
Food was great. Service was terrible. Waited after being seated, 1.5 hours til food came out. Granted they had a wedding dinner happening but they should have properly staffed or had a better understanding with the situation than saying you guys came in after sorry.
Food was great, alot of selections. Waitress was great. Got busy fast. Male waiter was rude. Didn't ask about checks. Forced us to pay total on two cards or one card. When we asked, he said .."not my problem". Highly recommend to ask for separate checks, first!!
I have ate out several times last few weeks Local restaurants Chart house whaling station LaLa grill all more expensive then Jose's and all were excellent and if your local you know average for a couple 150 200 with tip easy. But I wanted Mexican so I ordered my meal but did not come with sour cream so I asked the gentleman that took my order could he put a a spoon of sour cream on top of the enchiladas I said I'll pay for it no problem after my wife and I finished dinner which was excellent because we eat there once every couple months came to 43 dollars got off cheap but he charged two dollars for a teaspoon not tablespoon of sourcream well as usual I like tipping great anyways he only took the order a cheerful girl served us I left a tip of 12dollars for her not him when he took the order no personality never smiled and if your familar with joses we sat in the back table it was tilted light was out young girl apologized we never complained for light being out but he never said anything no big deal had to use my phone flashlight to see menu.short story thought it was very tacky just venting like I said I still tipped very well accordingly it's not about 2 dollars He could have said on the house your light is out above your head your table is tilted and I have no personality and I would have understood. No more Jose's for awhile.
While the servers and atmosphere was great. The food was not authentic. The carnitas and carne asada was excellent. I’d return just for that. But for the price. I would have liked home made tortillas and real beans. Still. They are very nice and provided a good experience. The only reason why I even gave them three stars. The food was not bad at all. Just not authentic.
Overrated. Great chips, but food and fries came out kind of cold. I know fries aren’t mexican food, but I’d like my kids to be happy. The chili Colorado was a little bland but ok, the house margarita tasted just ok - but the Cadillac didn’t seem to have any lime in it…maybe boozy - but not very good. Not going back with 5 kids for sure. Also, seemed understaffed. Spicy salsa was great- but the plain was not the best.
I came over for lunch. It’s a tricky parking job because the address is on Del Monte, but the parking area is located on Broadway. I was seated quickly and right away I noticed how clean the interior was and the alcohol on behind the bar. They did have a tv on a soccer match, but they had music playing. They do have high-chairs & booster seats for the kids, and their restroom was very clean. As for the food, the chips were really fresh and the salsa was very good. A little on the spicy side, but good. I had the enchiladas. One was chicken, beef & cheese with green sauce. I like the brûlée cheese on top and the small salad, but that’s where the positives stop. The green sauce that was on top of the enchiladas had a citrus/sour taste. It really made the dish hard to eat. The chicken inside the enchilada was very dry. Very disappointing. With all of the other Mexican options around, I don’t think I’d try this place again. Price: $27 (includes a 20% tip)

With all of the other Mexican options around, I don’t think I’d try this place again. Price: $27 (includes a 20% tip)
I was taken there by my good friends after the passing of my father. I had not eaten in two days .. SO.. they said we’ll go here .. I was Very disappointed after getting ready to munch the Enchiladas were flavor-less and the rice tasted old reheated or something. The server asked if I was Sad .. yes your food is a (C-) worst Mexican Food. Will have to go to Salinas for good Food … Thank you …
We came here because of the great reviews. Unfortunately this place was a bit disappointing. We waiting almost 2 for our food. The 7 mares had very little sea food, the shrimp and asada fajitas was also more veggies than anything. And there was nothing special about the chicken flautas. The staff was very nice and was the only positive thing about our experience.
Mediocre American style food. Nothing authentic about this place. My tortilla was burned on my 🌯 they just wrapped the burned side in.

Service was okay, food was not very enjoyable; I was speaking in Spanish, initially, but non-responsive as they assumed I was 'practicing,' in my native language.
Got a taco rice and beans couldn’t eat. The taco was not good just ate the rice and beans sauce and chips were lousy..Won’t be back.
If I could give a zero I would. The bartender server was lovely and deserves a 5 star. The margarita was the worst by far that I've ever had. The chips and salsa were terrible. The chimichanga was swimming in grease and undercooked. Truly the worst mexican food I have ever had.
I LOVE Mexican food and I am not picky at all. I have eaten at hundreds of Mexican places in Salinas and Monterey Bay area, and unfortunately this has been my only bad experience so far in this area. My child loved the fish tacos (the fish was freshly fried), but the other food seemed not fresh: beans tasted out of a can, chicken fajitas was not hot and tasted as if they were warmed up in the microwave, salsa didn't taste right/like out of a expired store bought salsa jar, food portion was not satisfying, chips tasted like cheap store bought (although spicy salsa was good), and so on. Plus it was more expensive than most Mexican restaurants in Seaside I like. I am being detailed here because I am trying to be constructive, in case management read my review. I went there because the reviews we decent, but I was very disappointed.
Given we went at a busy time but we literally spent two hours here. It took an hour and a half to get our food. The food tasted like it had been sitting under a heating lamp for a while and we were not happy with how it tasted for having to wait so long. We only got one drink refill (we all had water) the whole time we were there! The servers were nice but not communicative or very attentive.
