Absolute perfection.A beautiful afternoon on the patio with the freshest most delectable oysters with a fresh new dip of apples/apple cider vinegar and ...scallions?great creative diversion from the usual cocktail sauce.THE best calamari Ive ever had(and I have calamari a lot) a lovely split of prosecco and lovely fun waiters..Like I said...perfection.
We came in the middle of a snowstorm on a Saturday night. The restaurant was nearly empty, so we sat down immediately. the staff are friendly and attentive and ready with recommendations, including a small selection of local brews. The fried calamari appetizer was the tenderest I've ever had. Of course, the fried haddock was hot, crispy, and deeply tanned. Cioppino was a just right spicy with some XL scallops and mussels, tender. Music was a bit loud at first, but fit the atmosphere with a blues jazz background.
We visited Syracuse from Texas and experienced one of our worst service at the Clam Bar so we researched and decided to give the Fish Friar a try. We noticed the difference of the 2 places right off the bat. We were greeted by both waitstaff even the bartender. We ordered clams with garlic butter, fish and chips, fried calamari and Mac salad. They were all delicious. The seafood tasted fresh. Our waitress, McKenzie gave us great service. We left there satisfied.
This was a really good place to eat. My girlfriend is gluten free and they were super accommodating. Most of the menu can be made gluten free. I had the salmon grilled cheese and the haddock tomato soup and was beyond satisfied.
Food is always good, the staff friendly. As a Mainer, I'm always happy to eat here. Spending is high for my review because I double up and, at worst, take home leftovers. The tartar is phenomenal.
Fish Fryar is the absolute best! They have THE BEST tartar sauce I’ve ever had. The lobster rolls are amazing when they have them on special.
The outside of the restaurant was nice and clean. There were/are a few outdoor tables for those who wish to eat outside enjoying the beautiful weather. The staff was very nice and polite. My whole experience here was lovely. I had the broiled haddock with roasted carrots and fries. The food was wonderful, it was presented very well, and the inside of the restaurant was very clean as well. I will be going back very soon.
Beautiful space with great food, beverage, and staff. All you can ask for
Food was excellent, service was immediate and friendly. The only down side is that the restaurant is kind of small. I will definitely be back
We were passing through on vacation and this place was easy to get to from the highway. We even lucked out to find a parking space right in front of the restaurant. I had the scallop roll, and husband had the spicy po’boy (and it was spicy he says). The server was very attentive and we enjoyed a very good meal as we sat outside.
I love this place. The cocktails are great. Mushy peas and haddock bisque are phenomenal
Found this place last night and had a wonderful dinner with a friend. Mushy peas was recommended to us by another patron and this side dish was simply delicious. The Maine Cobb salad had a beautiful presentation with a fabulous flavor combination. I am definitely looking forward to my next visit to Syracuse and dining here again.
Amazing food, drinks and ambiance! We sat on the patio on a warm sunny evening which was lovely, but inside looked like a great vibe too. The classic scallop roll, shrimp po boy, fish and chips, and clam chowder that were all enjoyed in our crowd were raved about! Some of the best seafood in the area and love that it is wild caught. The homemade condiments are top notch and the toasted butter rolls are outstanding. Service was just perfect as well. Already can’t wait to go back, what a gem.
I was in town for a conference and happened across this lovely seafood restaurant online. I only did takeaway but when seeing how cozy and welcoming the restaurant was I wished I had dined in with my wife. Looks like a great spot for a date night! The service was perfect and the food was out of this world. I think that was the best calamari I've ever had in my life, and the Po Boy was definitely up there with some of the ones I've tried down in New Orleans, which is saying a lot about the quality and freshness of the seafood. Overall, super impressed with every aspect of The Fish Friar and will definitely be back next time I'm in town, probably more than once!
We love fish friar!! You always get a great meal, drinks, and ambiance!
We love Fish Friar! The fried shrimp and the cool boy are so good! Can’t go wrong with fish & chips either! Atmosphere is chill, I love the lighting. Staff is friendly & knowledgeable. We even took my mom there when she came to visit.
Front of house and management is very welcoming - you can tell they have a passion for their job. Love the small menu changes over the years and can’t beat a rotating cocktail list. When we can’t think of something to eat, we always default to The Fish Friar. Very consistent and some of the best seafood around!
I happened to have about 14 hours to kill in Syracuse waiting on a flight. A bartender over at salt city recommended I come here and it was a 10/10 experience. Had clams and beer, a scallop roll, and fries with the curry gravy. My god. One of the most unexpected delicious deep cuts of food in my life. Love this place.
The Fish Friar exceeded my expectations! Their service, craft beer selection and menu are all exceptional. We enjoyed a freshly tapped Keg of Middle Ages Brewery's Batch #13 which was phenomenal just like the waitress and chef said it would be! For lunch we enjoyed a Spicy Shrimp Po Boy, Haddock Sandwich, and a Lobster Roll. The food was fresh, well prepared, and looked beautiful! There was nothing left on any of our plates! I cannot wait to go back and try more!!
Today I got the spicy boy bowl and it didn’t disappoint. I ordered this to go and the order was ready on time and prepared to my liking. The Fish Friar crew is amazing and what’s not to like about fresh, never frozen seafood?
Fish only! Don't go thinking you can get chicken or a burger! The haddock is terrific, but a little on the small side. I suppose you can order extra. The haddock plate is yummy! They get fresh fish in frequently and its noticeable. My son got the fisherman's platter and loved it. Like the outdoor dining. Street parking only.
Absolutely outstanding place to dine!! The flavor combinations and blend of sweet and savory are incredible. We are just up in the area visiting.. we haven't even got our check yet and we are planning our next trip back and what we are ordering next time. The presentation was fantastic, service outstanding, fantastic atmosphere.... a complete win in my book!!!
This place was fantastic. The only issue I had was the fact their website placed it on Genesee St, but it's not on Genesee St. My GPS had me going in circles. Luckily, I finally found it.
Hands down my favorite place in Syracuse. While the fresh fish is without compare, what I particularly appreciate are the wide selection of innovative cocktails at the bar. The syrups and mixes are created in house, and often feature locally sourced ingredients when in season. Happy hour discounts until 6pm. I come back here every time I’m in town.
Came in for lunch during taste of Syracuse. Had the fish slider and seafood soup while the wife had a Home Boy Po' Boy. Both were well portioned, flavorfull dishes. I would definitely recommend for lunch. We'll come back for dinner. The restaurant is pretty small, maybe 10-12 tables. Very bright and clean with nice decor. March 30th: Update: Wife and I ordered delivery got the fried haddock platter and sautéed shrimp dinner. Delivery was fast and the food still warm and delicious. That's the sautéed shrimp below. The mushy peas had a bit of a bite which is a nice surprise, the carrots were well spiced, and the rice pilaf perfect, as were the shrimp.
What a nice find in Downtown Syracuse! The streets roll up early down here but The Fish Friar shines. Very fresh fish, delicious sides like the Roasted Carrots; the Mushy Peas (yes, Mushy Peas!) are a must! Nice vibe with some cool alternative music playing. Outside seating as well for the “Not Winter” season in Syracuse!
You have to try this place! The Fish Friar is by far my favorite place to eat in Syracuse. Very cozy feel to the place. Wonderful craft beer and wine selection. The food is off the charts good. I highly recommend the scallop roll and the spicy shrimp po’ boy. The mushy peas, fries and slaw are all amazing. The staff are super friendly and the prices are fantastic. Next time you go out to eat in Syracuse, go here! You won’t be disappointed.
I really can't say enough great things about the Fish Friar. I've been here 5 times now and can I say that it's better every time? The staff is always accommodating, ready to serve up some of the best and unique selection of craft beers and while you're sipping your drink you can browse the awesome seafood menu! The best tartar sauce I've every had. I could go on and on. Love this place, love Derek, he is just great!
Please follow us on Facebook at SNDTravels. I'm by myself tonight and was wanting some seafood. As we like try to find local places, I took to Google and asked away. The Fish Friar was among the few and at first glance it had good reviews but the menu seemed limited so I continued the search. Finally decided to try it because it was easy to get to off the freeway. What a great choice. I had the scallops roll with Mac salad and house salad. Everything had great flavor and the scallops we're perfectly cooked. Michelle was great as my server making suggestions and having a friendly attitude. Of course I found out she was from Dallas also so it was just some good ol southern hospitality way up north. Overall, a perfect dinner and topped off with great weather setting outside. Come check it out.
First time dining at the fish friar and everything was great! We sat outside on a beautiful day. We had the calamari and haddock bisque to start. The lemon mayo with the calamari was great! Then shrimp po boys on rice pilaf for the main was also fantastic. Drinks were good as well! Will definitely be back.
Pleasantly surprised a place like this exists in Syracuse. I didn't know what to expect going in. The atmosphere had very chill vibes and fitting music. The staff were very polite and attentive. These guys looked like they caught and prepared the fish themselves. I ordered the fish and chips as well as the poutine. The poutine used a curry gravy which was very good. Their fries were very crispy on the outside and soft on the inside as they should be. The fish was well seasoned, flakey, and perfectly cooked. I really like how nicely done the outer layer was as well. The tartar sauce is made in house and complimented the fish well. I would definitely come back here to.try the other things on the menu.
My husband and I were in the city, right near FF and decided to stop in after hearing good things. We got there right when they opened at 4. We immediately liked the vibe. We were greeted quickly and chose to sit at the bar. We ordered a dirty martini and margarita and they were both great. Since it was a weird time we didn’t get a ton of food but what we ordered we loved. We started with the steamed clams, New England Clam Chowder and the Friar Salad. We split the entree of the sampler. I forget what it was called but it came with a huge piece of fried fish, 3 large shrimp, fries and some sauces. Everything was fresh and service was fast. We will definitely be back.
The Fish Friar has awesome fried fish and other assorted dishes. I have not yet eaten at the restaurant but have gotten take-out a few times and each time the food is perfectly prepared. Even by the time I get home, my food is hot yet still crisp. The Fish and chips are wonderful. The fries are tasty and the fish is perfect. They even have their own specialty tartar sauce which pairs wonderfully with the fish. I would recommend giving the Fish Friar a try if you haven't.
Early dinner date, got there at open. Wonderful staff, great atmosphere. Cozy and small, I like smaller restaurants and the menu was simple; don't need a million choices. Definitely would go again!
Food and drinks were absolutely outstanding. Host was tremendously helpful. Server was a very nice guy. But, when it came to the check. He disappeared and we hadn't seen him for a period of time. The young man at the host station took care of us. He was freaking awesome.
FANTASTIC FISH This spot is super cute, service is friendly, and the food is DYNAMITE. We tried to get into a place around the corner, but we’re happy to walk-in here. Next time I visit my baby in Cuse, I will be hitting up this joint for sure. Batter on the fish is flavorful, light, & crispy.
This is a great space with outdoor seating and superb food. Our waiter was wonderful with my rather sharp sense of humor. The food was outstanding and we actually ordered seconds lol. We sat outside on a very beautiful day with a seating is quite spacious. I strongly recommend this place.
The food was absolutely lovely and our waiter was super nice. The vibe of the restaurant is very nice; kind of a chic industrial affair. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, so if the weather is nice, I’d recommend sitting outside. It’s right by Hannover square which is very cute and is one of my favorite places in Syracuse. So if you’re having a day on the town, I’d highly recommend coming here.
What a nice surprise. We were looking for a seafood restaurant downtown and googled this gem. Short walk from our hotel at Armory Square area. Quaint little restaurant with real burning candles. Food was exceptionally fresh and well prepared. The staff was equally amazing, with a ton of knowledge about the food and the history of the restaurant. Must try when in Syracuse.
A must go place if you are in Syracuse .Excellent fried fish which was a haddock ..I have not ate such a flavorful crispy fish in US. Fresh and reasonable portion . Also I had the Spicy Haddock bisque which was basically the haddock in a tomato broth .But it was tasty ! Affogato in dessert is a must to have The ambience was cozy and definitely a place to visit again
My mother and I were visiting Syracuse for the first time and came across this cute and quaint restaurant and left extremely satisfied. We shared the chowder of the day, the Cobb salad and the fish and chips. Everything was amazing, but would have to say the Cobb salad was the best of all - so flavourful and they did not skimp out on the smoked salmon on top at all. Would highly recommend this place!!
Husband and I enjoy coming here. He loves the shrimp, we get them every time, and he literally raves about them to friends and family. We usually get a bowl of whatever the house chowder is, and it's always delicious, and their spicy haddock chowder is delightful. We both get fish and chips. The fish is always perfectly cooked and so juicy. The fries are crispy and delicious. Neither of us like tartar sauce, so we leave that off, husband gets the friar sauce and garlic butter, and I get honey mustard. The fish and honey mustard combo is fantastic. One of these days, I'll branch out and get something different; but starting with some chowder and having a main dish of fish and chips just hits the spot perfectly. On top of all that, the hostess/waitress is amazing, friendly, and attentive. The bartender seems friendly and makes a killer lemonade. It's a solid spot to go get dinner. Especially If you're craving a fish fry. We do miss the captains platters though!
In from out of town and this is a fun place to visit. They have rotating taps including local drafts, though I stuck to the iced tea with lunch. Try the haddock sandwich! That and the rice pilaf are great. I like the roast carrots but prefer them more done like we do in NYC. However when I asked for salt they brought a great small grinder so bonus points there. Don’t miss this spot.
Great place for fresh seafood! The smoked salmon is 11/10. I wish there was a little bit more variety, such as a veg option besides peas or a second dessert option :) that would definitely bring me in more, knowing I won't be able to get dessert with dinner is a bummer The cook on more delicate things can be hit or miss, I've had a lobster roll be very chewy and overcooked, but I've also had beautiful buttery scallops, it's a risk you take with seafood. Decent wine list too and the bartenders make great drinks!
Went to the Fish Friar recently - the remodel looks great. Tried out one of the fancy new house cocktails - very nice to look at, and strong too. Our server Maria was sweet, effervescent, and knowledgeable about the menu. We loved her! There was a special that night of lobster rolls - we got one cold with the lemony mayo, and one warm with butter. I liked the cold better - the lemon mayo went excellent with the lobster. We also shared a basket of fries that were perfectly crisp. I was a bit disappointed that they didn't offer desserts, but was told that its something they are working on in the future. I cant wait to come back!
Super cute cafe. The food is plentiful and delicious. We over ordered not knowing how huge the portions were. The calamari app was tender and delicious, the fish and chips perfectly cooked, and our desserts left us wanting to lick the plate. Service was prompt and not overbearing. We'll be back.
Food was great and service was 👍. The atmosphere 👌 . Need more comfortable chairs 💺 outside 😩 but worth the price of the food . Must try with friends . Parking a bit tough but available. Fish and chips 🍟 are good.
If you're looking for a place with good food and drinks, I'd recommend stopping by FF. I love their fish; it's always hot and fresh. I've tried out a lot of fish options in the area, and FF has one of the best fish dinners. The ambiance at FF is great too. I love this space. I've been coming to different restaurants in this space over the years. It's convenient to get to and has plenty of parking nearby. I can't wait to stop back soon.
Location is ideal the staff seems friendly, Host did not smile while greeting. I ordered the fat boy Shrimp Poboy. The order took a little over an hour, but food was hot when it was received. The food did taste good and I appreciated how hot it was. Portion size was very small versus cost for a plate. The meal definitely did not have enough rice. Pretty tight with the sauces here, Host would not get some sauce for my meal as I asked for. Overall my experience was good but I think it would have been better with some more side sauces. Thank you!
Pricey, but came out with massive portions. The haddock was huge, and sat on a giant bed of fries. Had a side of rice pilaf as well, which was oddly flavored unlike other pilaf I had, but I scarfed every bite down! Haddock batter was very well seasoned and not too oily. I left an empty plate, though I really shouldn't have eaten that much for lunch, def needed a map after. Have to take a star away as service was nonexistent after my order was taken, other than to take the plate away and give a bill. Def worth going back with a friend and splitting a plate though!
Scallops for the wine. Great beer and wine selection. Atmosphere is amazing for a date night. I am a pescatarian. So fish us my thing. The fish and chips are okay. FF are just FF and so is the haddock. The breading had little to no flavor. I hope they rethink the breading. The fried shrimp was also meh....
This place has turned into one of my favorite restaurants in Syracuse. Right at the edge of downtown Syracuse, this restaurant offers a very healthy Seafood menu as well as comfort food options including fried fish and chips. But those looking for just a taste of the meal here, consider the scallops and shrimp options as snacks. Get to know the bartender and you may be invited to monthly beer tastings.
Fish Friar was a great place for fish / seafood. It's been around just over one year. It's not your typical greasy fish and chips joint but above average restaurant with simple and uncomplicated menu. We had mussel bisque. It was tasty with a little on the spicy side soup (we loved it). Recommended. Next dish was fried calamari. Lightly battered fried with slices of jalapeno, not greasy with sprinkled parmesan cheese. Excellent. Recommended. For main course, we tried fried fish (haddock) platter with mushy peas, potato salad and rice pilaf. Rice pilaf could use a little less salt. Mushy peas and potato salad were very good. The fish was crispy on the outside and perfectly cooked inside. We recommend with mushy peas as one of your sides for the platter. Thank to Chef Boggan (spelling?) for creating beautiful and tasty dishes. We will definitely return and highly recommend Fish Friar.
We hadn't visited this restaurant since they moved to a new location in downtown Syracuse several years ago, where they now occupy some of the space that once comprised the French restaurant L'Adour. I ordered the Captain's Platter which included fried haddock, 3 fried shrimp, french fries, coleslaw, tartar sauce, and cocktail sauce. It was quite a filling and tasty meal. My favorite part was the fried shrimp and cocktail sauce. I also enjoy the fish but felt the in-house tartar sauce was a bit bland. I'm used to a version that has more texture from chopped dill pickle, whereas the sauce made here appears to have been blended in a processor. The French fries were were ok and the coleslaw was very good. I look forward to trying one of their crispy shrimp Po'Boys the next time we visit. My wife ordered steamed clams, three seared scallops and a sides of potato salad and macaroni salad. They were all enjoyable. The service was excellent and the ambience was casual and fun.
I order food for pickup, so I can only tell you about the food itself. I ordered a shrimp bánh mì, it was great! Flavor was on point, even though the sandwich wasn't as big as a regular bánh mì. Because of this, I think prices are on the higher side for what you get, but it's delicious food. From picking up the food, I took a quick look to the place, it seems nice! I would come back to seat down if it wasn't for Wolf's biergarten around the corner. I found out about this place while watching a soccer game, and you can get a free beer if you purchase food from here (there's a minimum purchase that I don't remember)
This place is fantastic. Normally no complaints at all ever! I been eating here since they were in Solvay with the huge lemon at the register 😊. However I did order calamari to go and was disappointed at the portion I received versus when I dine at the bar which is fab as all hell! I did call and was told to come back and get a new order but I was damn scared lol I ate my tiny portion and drank water and shut up lol this place does rock tho so yea couldn't be too mad just a bit hungry…… Edit: 9.12.25 I have actually reviewed this place when they first moved to downtown sorry if my Google account was different. I have always highly recommended this place to everyone since they were in Solvay. So not sad but the quality has changed is all. I miss the small shop in Solvay. It reminded me of Home, Baltimore. The restaurant has changed. As a long time patron I think I have a right to speak up about that. Thank you
This is a record from a little while ago. It was our first visit. I ordered restaurant's signature fish & chips. The haddock meat was soft not dry at all, the batter was crispy, and the oil was not tasting oxidized. There are more different types of seafood dishes on the menu, and I would like to try something else next time! Btw the restaurant's interior was also cute!
We had called in earlier to be put on a waitlist . We arrived and ordered a drink at the bar. Shortly after we were told our table was ready. We were seated. Shortly after that, a staff member told us we sat at a table reserved for another party. You sat us. Why did you blame us. Very unprofessional. The reason I gave you 3 stars is the food is good, although portions have gotten alot smaller. Our waiter was good.
The food was very good. 5 stars there. The fish and fries were on point. The appetizer (calamari) never came out. The bartender never addressed it, asked how the food was, we asked for silverware and not offered a desert. The single older lady next to us got the attention as she was done with her meal and sipping wine. A check was simply placed in front of us. With a little more attention a 5 star meal would have been given.
I was a little mixed with this place. This definitely a place I would go for outside seating but I a little disappointed in the shrimp poboy sandwich I got. I think it could have used some more seasoning to give it that extra kick. I would try again but maybe not choose this particular item. The lemonade was more on the sweeter side then tart and on a hot day, I was looking for a nice balance. Overall, I would go here again with friend's for their outside seating option. The customer service by servers was very good.
I ordered take out this past Friday afternoon. It was my first time ordering at Fish Friat in about a year. I was always a big fan and was excited to give them a try again. I was extremely disappointed in the food. I ordered the scallop roll. It only had 4 scallops and they had absolutely no color on them. Whether they were broiled or seared, they should have been browned. The roll was completely over saturated with butter. For $20.00 I would expect more than 4 scallops seeing that the price of the sandwich did not include any type of side. I ordered a side of potato salad, which has always been one of my favorites. It was dry and lacked basic seasoning. The side of fries were good, although I requested them cooked crispy and they weren't. Also, if you want a dipping sauce it is a $2.00 up charge. In the past the side of fries came with the spicy chili sauce. It was my first time trying the peanut butter pie. It had really nice peanut butter flavor, but the ratio of crust to filling was off, way too much crust. I'm disappointed that I had such a negative experience with the food. I like the online ordering system and easy pick up for take out they have in place. The staff is always efficient and friendly. Hopefully they can get these kitchen issues worked out.
I ordered a 6 piece fried shrimp, when I got the bill it was for 12 dollars. Are thoroughly believe this is a rip off They will never get my money again!!!
Sat on the waitlist for 45+mins to have it disappear. Asked the host if our table was ready and was told that they were no longer accepting waitlist.
We just walked out of this place because the music was blasting dangerously loud and there was only one couple eating. When we politely asked them to turn it down and the woman was so rude we walked out !
