We went to Bronwyn on a Sunday. The place was busy! The ambience was nice. It can get a little tight in terms of spacing between tables, so be aware. I got the mulled wine. It was fabulous. The best I’ve ever had. Highly recommend especially on a cold evening. We got the pierogis and the schnitzel. The food was very tasty. Overall, it was good time.
- Schnitzel was excellent; large and crispy with a nice side of potatoes. - Beer is a little pricey, but good quality - I really like the ambiance; definitely a place I would return to for German food in Boston
Wasn’t exactly certain what I was getting myself into as German food seemed like a fun adventure with uncertain outcome. But wow was it great. Menu is fun and different than you might find in a restaurant that serves similar fare. Yet this place is a terrific series of dishes and a vacation for your palette. Best items - the sausage trio, the burgers were great (try ordering them medium if you can), the sauerkraut, those roasted potatoes - the whole thing. Definitely worth trying!!
This place is a gem, German food is a real treat. I lived in Bavaria when I was younger, and Bronwyn brought back a lot of nostalgia. My girlfriend and I started off the meal in this authentically decorated German restaurant with a pomegranate and shrub drink, we don't drink alcohol but we saw they had a very tempting selection. The drink was great with a wide range of flavors from lime to pomegranate. As an appetizer we got the Langos, which I had never had before. The dough was delicious and crunchy contrasting with the soft rich mushrooms and the cream had a nice touch of fresh dill. For the main course we split the Spätzle and the Schnitzel. It came out in a timely manner and we never felt like we had to wait as the restaurant was such a marvel. The Schnitzel was one of the best Schnitzels I've had, it was a little bit thicker than the Schnitzel I had back in Germany which allowed it to be so tender and crunchy, the lemon complimented the sauce and the Schnitzel perfectly, and the potato salad with chunks of pork belly is something I'd highly recommend as an addition to your meal. Spätzle is probably my favorite dish of all time so I may be biased but I thought it was so worth the hour drive we took to get there. The noodles had a perfect bite to them and the cheese was not too overbearing, the spinach and onions gave the dish its depth. Now my only complaint if ever so slight was I thought the sausage that we ordered with the spätzle was not the best pairing with it. It was a fine sausage on its own, but I think it would have gone better with their horseradish mustard or their jalapeno aioli. We still enjoyed it in contrast to the meal but I probably would opt for a different pairing. Finally we finished off the meal with their Apfelstrüdel. What a nice end to the meal, it surprised us by having a mild sweetness the apple and raisins carried the sweetness while the pastry and the freshly made whipped cream balanced out the flavor with chewiness and creaminess. We left the restaurant bellies full with enough leftovers for a full meal. The price was moderate and our service was incredible. Our server was very attentive, accommodating, and always available within a few minutes. Throughout the restaurant there were people of all cultures including German, and it was a really nice modern authentic experience. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.
If you like meat and potato’s, come here! Authentically German. Lots of sausage on the menu! Good fries. Pretzel was great. Big selection of German beer. Almost feels like you are in Germany here!
Went for Oktoberfest. I didn't go in expecting much, but the food was good, the music was fun and the decorations felt authentic.
It was very yummy and the German decorations are on point. The structure of the wooden table was interesting with some holes and indents and hexagonal bolts, and so we were postulating that it was refashioned from a door. I ordered a Goulash soup but the Latke, apple cider and the homemade sausages were all great.
Awesome German bar / restaurant with a great legit vibe and fantastic menu, and the best German beers in the area. Definitely recommend going with some friends and sharing a few liters of delicious fest beer. Can't recommend anything by Weihenstephan or Paulaner enough. The staff also totally rock!
Can’t wait for Oktoberfest every year. Some day I hope to go to Germany until then… Bronwyn The food is out of the park. Service is bar none exceptional. 6/16/2024 update: Father's Day Feast to Remember: An Unforgettable Brunch at Bronwyn Father’s Day brunch at Bronwyn was an experience to remember, blending rich German heritage with contemporary culinary excellence. Nestled in the edge of the heart of the Somerville, this gem of a restaurant offered a brunch that was as hearty as it was refined, perfectly capturing the essence of German cuisine. From the moment we stepped inside, the warm and welcoming ambiance enveloped us, setting the tone for a delightful family gathering. The décor, a harmonious mix of rustic Bavarian charm and modern elegance, instantly transported us to the quaint villages of Germany. The attentive staff greeted us with genuine smiles and promptly seated us at a spacious table. There is also outdoor dining but it was full of The brunch menu was a veritable feast, showcasing a variety of traditional German dishes with a contemporary twist. Authentic Bavarian comfort. Bronwyn delivered a Father’s Day brunch that was both a culinary delight and a heartfelt celebration of family and tradition. Whether you’re a connoisseur of German cuisine or a newcomer eager to explore, this restaurant promises an unforgettable dining experience that will leave you eagerly anticipating your next visit. Prost!
Absolutely loved the 2lb pork shank and their sauerkraut. A little crowded but fits well with the atmosphere. Would definitely recommend for anyone looking for great German food.
Stepping into this restaurant is like stepping into a different world. The decor is super fun and inviting. We got two 3-course Oktoberfests to try as much as possible. I will note that individually the plates were on the smaller side for the US but as a full dinner this was the right amount of food. The schnitzel was my favorite of everything I’ve tried - extremely crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. It pairs very well with the German potato salad. This was followed by the potato pancake and German apple cake which I was pulling large slices of apple out of. The braised beef fell apart in a beautiful way but I was not a huge fan of the cherry sauce. The service was quick and our waitress was very sweet. We also got cute Oktoberfest tattoos at the end of our meal! I am excited to come back and try more food especially the pretzel!
Hearty food, awesome beer, great vibes. The warm, slightly salty bretzel was my favourite! I am not usually a beer person but quite enjoyed a lager that the server recommended (the most popular beer on the menu). Schnitzel was a tad dry but had a great mushroom sauce. The sauerkraut braised pork was tasty. Portions are big but are a tad pricey. Excellent service and interesting atmosphere.
There is a bar and an inner seating space. The bar look very nice, but the inner room is AMAZING! Antique chairs and tables. The whole atmosphere is very romantic and warm and cozy. Highly recommend this place for special occasions! The potato pancake is a very nice sharing plate. The main dishes have big portions, so I’d consider boxing them for later.
We adore Bronwyn. My wife has had a lot more connection to Bronwyn and is great friends with them, but I have to say, as impartially as possible, that this is our absolute favorite place to celebrate Oktoberfest each year. Is there anything better than raising a liter of Märzen in a hefty stein? Well, yes, if it's followed by a trio of sausages, schnitzel, spätzle, and all the soft pretzels, mustard, and accoutrements you can handle! The strudel was the best way to end the night along with a shot of pear schnapps. 5 stars across the board, for sure!!!!!
Delicious vibes all the way! The staff was super sweet and made navigating food sensitivities a breeze. And OMG—the Shonberry and Honey Bear drinks were next-level amazing!
We visited BRONWYN (I have no idea why they capitalize their whole name.) Friday because October calls for German food. I love German food and there aren’t a lot of German restaurants around. I’ve been there before, but this was a wonderful visit. We started with the pretzel, big soft and covered with course salt. It comes with a very nice horseradish mustard, spicy but not overwhelming. For an up charge you can also get beer cheese, but I greatly prefer the mustard. They were celebrating Oktoberfest, but I’m not much of a beer drinker, so I started with a cocktail. They have a variation on a Negroni called Czech Yourself, made with Czech fernet, gin, and Campari. Although I’m mostly Irish-German, I do have some Czech ancestry and as you well know I’m a gin guy, so I had to try it. Very nice, I actually preferred it it to the traditional Negroni. After that I had a couple glasses of Austrian Grüner Veltliner. I’m not Austrian. For dinner we split the Spätzle and the Schnitzel. The spätzle is larger than I’m used to but nicely browned and served with spinach and onions. You can add a sausage to it if you like. We added a bratwurst. This dish is delicious but huge. I took some home, and it heats up nicely in a frying pan the next day.The schnitzel was also excellent. It is topped with a mushroom cream sauce and served with warm, bacony potato salad. I would get both of these dishes again with no hesitation. I’d even get the spätzle to go because it reheats so well. For dessert, we had the Apflestrudel, apples and golden raisins stuffed into a pastry and topped with buttermilk whipped cream. With it, I had a shot of Jäegermeister, which I didn’t shoot, I sipped. The staff was dressed in traditional German attire and the small space was decorated for Oktoberfest. There aren’t many seats and it’s crowded, but definitely charming. The service was very friendly and the atmosphere was casual. It was a relaxing feast. Union Square is about the worst place to park, but once you find a spot everything is great! I’m excited to go back to try the sauerbraten and of course more of their haus sausages.
Very fun and unique place! You feel like in the middle of October fest every time you visit. The beer selection is great. Some nice cocktails as well. Don’t count of finding anything healthy in the menu though! Caesar salad would be your only option. But the sausages and fried potatoes tastes amazing! Hot Dog was very delicious as well.
Delicious food. I got the German pancakes, they were incredible; soft and fluffy on the inside, the bottom was slightly crispy from the pan. They used high quality maple syrup. The restaurant has a super cute ambiance. Very well decorated in a rustic germain style. Very unique and enjoyable. Service was quick and friendly. This is a great restaurant for brunch, especially if you’re looking for a new and exciting place to try out.
Great beer & great food - wonderful for groups. Bronwyn is a lovely German themed gastropub in Somerville. The beer is very typically German and always very good. I recommend the random beer of the day - it always offers good value and expands the pallet. Their beer menu is huge. The food for me though is the star of the show. It's truly amazing and unique with robust flavors and tons of fun options that rotate with the seasons.
Amazing food and atmosphere! If you're looking for great traditional German beers, delicious German food, especially those sausages, then Bronwyn is the place you need to be. Make sure to check their hours as they close between their brunch and dinner services, but it's well worth it whenever you go!
Really delicious meal and cozy atmosphere!! This is definitely more of a cold weather restaurant, as the the portions will fill you up and the drinks will warm you up! The vibe is really cool and they have a lot of interesting things on their menu. My favorites were the Wurst Trio and gluwein (mulled wine), and naturally the soft pretzel (we started with one and ended up ordering 2 more). The burger and pierogies were also pretty decent. You can't go wrong here!
Food was delicious, great atmosphere. We were a group of 9 and we had a great time. Would definitely come back again!
Great German fare with lots of international beer options including German beers on draft. The spatzle was not what I'm used to traditionally but very good. In addition to the spatzle we got schnitzel and the sausage platter, as well as the pickled eggs and potato salad to start. Everything was very well done. Come hungry and expect to leave satisfied.
Let me start off and say, you may get sticker shock but you get your dollar's worth. All the food was made with care and pride, they don't skimp on portions and the ambience is a relief from the neighborhood. If German food is this good, I need to go to Germany. Big fan of their fried potatoes
Fun German pub with welcoming vibe. The burgers and wurst got high marks from our crew. The wait staff was flexible and fun.
Sorry for the subpar photos. They definitely don't do the food justice. Everything we ordered that night was phenomenal. 5 different house made sausages, hot potato salad, sauerkraut, potatoes fried in pork fat, spatzle, and huge goblets of beer. Their beer menu is massive, I wish I had the stomach to have more than one glass that night. 10/10 would recommend.
Really liked this place. Went for dinner with my Husband and we both really liked it. The place has a German Bavarian-like decor that makes you feel in the mood. Tried the burger which was delicious and has a pretzel bun that gave the burger a lot of flavor and I could say its a very good differentiator from other burgers I have tried near Boston. We also ordered some doughnuts for dessert which were also delish. This place has good service and good, I highly recommend going and trying its delicious stuff. They have a famous pretzel that is made daily, was not able to try it but will surely come back to that. They also have a great variety of European beers.
Tonight my boyfriend and I went to the bar for his 25th birthday. The bartender was great and the overall experience was unforgettable. 10/10 highly recommend!
Cosy Bavarian tavern feel, food was universally good, varied selection of German beers, and excellent service. Oompah Band was good fun on an Oktoberfest Sunday.
Very cozy environment with attentive staff. The food was excellent! I'd recommend it to anyone who hasn't been here, to stop in and experience it for yourself
Great beer and solid German comfort dishes. Don’t usually crave German food, but had to stop by for their “Oktoberfest”. I was expecting most of the food to be a little one-dimensional, but this place had enough personality in its cooking to keep me interested. For the Oktoberfest setup, all the servers were in trachts and the place was decked out with festive décor. We came in for an early dinner, so it wasn’t packed yet, but it had that cozy German tavern energy. Since Jacob Wirth closed, this is the only German spot I know in the area, so it felt refreshing to walk into something different. Beer-wise, they had a few interesting German selections you don’t typically see in pubs. The draft we ordered was light, crisp, and easy to drink (clean finish without the lingering bitterness). Food was solid overall, and our favorites were the schnitzel and sauerbraten. Schnitzel – Thin, crisp, covered in creamy mushroom sauce. Fine on its own, but the mashed potato on the side had a really nice smoky, savory kick. Sauerbraten – Really tender briskets set on sweet-sour cabbage. The only vegetable on the table, so it was necessary. Spätzle – First time trying this ultimate German comfort dish. The hand-ripped egg noodles had that rustic chew I liked. But throwing one sausage on top for $6 extra felt lazy. Would recommend if you’re in the mood for some good German comfort food and beer.
Festive, German restaurant with authentic faire. Hostess was quick to seat us; however our waitress was a bit rude and disinterested in handling our table.
Overall, it was very good. I degraded the rating for a couple of things. The style was unlike anything we have ever had in Europe, so it is hard to adjust to. The service is much like European style, very hands off. That kinda goes with the German restaurant style, but it was also a little annoying trying to get attention. First, the potato pancakes. The flavor was good, and they were done well. The sauce on top was almost like a horseradish, and then there was apple sauce on the side. Was not a big fan of sauce, and never taisted something like that before. The two flavors didn't combine well. The schnitzel was incredible. Very original. The sauce was a little weak and not enough. It was over potato salad, which was warm. The flavor of the salad was very different and, again, warm, unusual. The spatzle was very different. Large long clumps. There was also spinach in it, slightly overcooked. The flavor was good, but the size and spinach really threw us off. The food was very well cooked and everything did taste good. It is definitely worth going to, but be aware it is a little different than the traditional German food we were used to. We did live in Germany for 8 years. The place was clean. The staff were friendly. The place is crowded and they have a center table that is pretty European. Basically one long table that everyone sits at, not really separated, so be prepared for that. I would still go back, just keep my mind more open.
In Boston for the weekend and my daughter suggested we try this German restaurant that was across the street from the axe throwing venue we went to. The menu is not as extensive as the German restaurant I frequent in Columbia, but the food is well prepared and very tasty. The interior of the restaurant is decorated with authentic German decor and items. The chairs and table seemed very authentic amd the chairs were very comfortable. The price is right, so I would definitely try this spot out again if I wanted German food when in the Boston area.
We went during the Fluff Fest which also happens to coincide with Oktoberfest. They served a pretzel and fluff rimmed beer to celebrate the occasion and it was far more tasty than it may sound. We dined on the best Spätzle with a side of of sausage and it was delicious. The menu is full of authentic German food from schnitzel to sauerbraten. Good bar area and great service
This place is nice. It has a good location with available parking. They have indoor and outdoor dine-in. It is a cozy place. I and my boyfriend went there for a dinner. They have 3 courses meal for $35 per person. It is a good deal. I recommend going there when you are starving, otherwise, you most likely will not finish your food. The portions are big enough. For $35 you got an appetizer, main dish, and a dessert. We tried almost everything that they had on the menu. For appetizer we had Veg Pierogi (potato, cheese, sauerkraut & spinach filling, dill créme fraîche) and Reibekuchen (potato pancake, apple sauce, dill crème fraîche, horseradish). For the main dish, we ordered Schnitzel and Wurst Trio. And the final was desserts German Apfel Kuchen and Schokoladenmousse. Food was okay, I cannot say that it was extremely delirious but it was alright. Honestly, my boyfriend and I went there because we saw on the menu that they serve a Berliner Eisbein. Unfortunately, they do not serve it anymore. The customer service was great, our waiter was friendly and nice. We also ordered the German beer and a Nürnberger Glühwein. They also have only one type of German beer.
Great place with good food and brew selection. However, if it's a great beer garden as advertised, they fall short by a long distance. Service was par at best and beer selection was so-so. Overall a decent spot that is nothing special--especially if you know your Bavarian brews.
📍BRONWYN Restaurant Boston 🍻🥨 1️⃣Konigsteller for two. It’s huge! Definitely for two, the pork shank is okay, but fried potatoes are 💥 👍🏼 ( you can also order fried potatoes for appetizer too) 2️⃣the appetizer 🥨 are sooooo delicious, have to get another one. 3️⃣starters- charcuterie Plate for two. Chicken liver is pretty good with the bread/ bacon is smoky and sweet, really good 👌 4️⃣Schnizel- fried pork with mashed potatoes at the bottom, the garlic mashed potatoes are super good 👍🏼 8️⃣we ordered a Mystery beer, and this beer is delicious! Has strong 🍏 Apple scented, and not bitter at all. Saw many people just come in and enjoy a few beers. It must be a pretty good place for beer🍻
I can only review a weekend lunch that I had here. The location had ample parking out front. The service was quick and efficient. I ordered the BratDog for $15.00 and it was served on a nice pretzel dog roll and tasted great. I would order this again.
Really cozy European pub vibes inside. We were pleased with the outdoor dining option-- it's even viable while snowing, which it was, but it really was nice. (There was a heater under the table and the umbrellas had us well covered but some snow did blow in on us.) I had the potato rosti and the pretzel and enjoyed both. The restaurant adds a 20% tip by default. Public parking is available right outside, if you can snag a spot.
First time having cheese fondue..lived up to expectation. Cosy warm environment with a great selection aside from our choice of the 3 course menu which was a large delicious serve. Definitely recommend to book ahead.
Enjoyed a meal in the biergarten on a warm Summer night. Bronwyn has an amazing atmosphere and the decorations really make it feel welcoming. The service was great and we were able to be seated at a table instantly. Menus are small but focus on their specialty items. The beer flights and cocktails are the best part of this restaurant. They are inventive and give you a chance to try something new. During this visit we decided to share a few apps. The Plaky was the clear stand out. The flavors of the creme fraiche, smoked salmon, and potato blended perfectly and we left craving more. Unfortunately, the Urnebes was a disappointment. The dip was clunky and hard to pick up and needed a bit more cream to be classified as a dip. Overall, while we enjoyed trying a new restaurant we are unsure if we will return since Somerville has much better options.
Nice decor but food was mediocre. Came here for authentic German food but it was so salty and portion was small for two. Beer was ok, imported from Germany. Don’t think will come back again tho.
It was not at all as promised. The parking lot had 12 spots. Far too few for the number of tables. The beer garden was supposed to be covered and heated. The covering was umbrellas over the picnic tables and there was no heat so had to wear our coats. The food was mediocre Though the pork was tender and the sausages were good but the sides were mushy and not any food I have eaten in Germany on the two occasions I was there. And for two entres, two sides, a pint beer and a non alcoholic cider, the bill was $106.89 including the tip of 20%. Not a place for older people, due to lack of parking and the noise. We tried it for Octoberfest. Will not be returning.
I like that they have food service after 9pm. Came late after work and was happy to try a local German restaurant. Maybe it was late or an off night but the food wasn’t great. I ordered the Salat salad: beets, arugula and greens. The salad tasted as if the all of the greens had been individually salted. I picked at it as I ate the warm German potato salad I’d ordered. I wish they’d have cooked the bacon more, found a few fatty pieces of bacon in it, a turn off for me. Overall it was ok because I was hungry. The service was great at the bar. I might return for another try and order the salad with dressing on the side and ask for bacon on the side too if that’s at all possible.
Came here for brunch and my partner got a burger and I got the Wurst Teller. The sausages were good, but the eggs were raw. Not over medium, not slightly under done but RAW. The mustard was salty and the potatoes were unremarkable home fries. The salad was really just garnish to surround the mustard and ketchup containers. Salad was really just added for color since it was mostly smashed beyond a few leaves. The burger was pretty good if not a little on the small side. It had some pretty nice pickles and was a good deal at $14. The place was busy but since it's so small, it was hard to justify the wait for glasses and then again to order. This was too bad as my dining partner's first choice had just run out after our order was taken. Staff never asked how the food was and the orders took a bit of time to come out of the kitchen. Overall it was a disappointing meal.
Bronwyn is the manifestation of what Americans think a German restaurant should be... But isn't. I lived in Germany for years and expected to have a proper German meal here. Unfortunately, the menu was very limited and overly expensive for the offering. A plate of Spätzle for example cost ~$20 (no meat included). The sauerkraut tasted overly processed as though it came from a can and was heated. The schnitzel was small and dry. There was no Rohtkohl, no Klöße, no Rouladen. Freunde, geh irgendwo anders.
Food was very good but the prices are outrageous. We spent 90 dollars on one entree and a couple of appetizers. While everything was delicious the portions to price ratio will probably keep us from coming back. Being from Germany, the portions are usually much heartier and affordable. So I just felt disappointed by that.
So they have the glasses. They have the ability. They just won’t serve you a Liter or Boot of beer UNLESS it’s one specific beer. (That’s my confused face) Then when the bartender was asked about this, she was rude in her response saying “they just don’t” …might as well have said “Well, it’s always been done that way” Food is delicious. Service could be better. Decision making behind providing beer could be extremely improved on. Too many other great places around the area to deal with this. If I see the guy next to me with a Boot of beer but I can’t get it filled with the beer I want “just because” there’s too many other great places that don’t pull that.
The only food star this place gets is for the Baltic charcuterie board, which was actually pretty fire. Service was fast and friendly and the place is well decorated and has good vibes. But Jesus the other food we ordered was not great. It wasn't German at all (I am German) and took my German family to eat there tonight, November 12th. The Schnitzel, the Wurst Teller and the Reibekuchen were atrociously bad. Let's start with what Schnitzel is. It's a breaded cutlet that's airy and juicy. This was dry, under seasoned, and had no separation of meat and breading. A good Schnitzel will see little bits of breading lifted from the meat to form air pockets like you see on pizzas sometimes. The warm potato salad was literally this mound of some weird potato mash mixture with brown stuff. Traditional warm potato salad is acidic, sweet, with chunks of potato, bacon, onions and some mustard. This was a far cry from that. The Wurst Teller had two sausages, both were somehow dry and not juicy. Seasoning on both was off, like too much caraway seeds or other spices, not enough salt or fat in the sausages, and just tasted awful. It comes with sauerkraut which was waaay too acidic and these home fry American style potatoes that absolutely have nothing to do with German style Bratkartoffeln which are cooked in Butter or other fats while these were likely just deep-fried. Lastly Reibekuchen are something similar to latkes. You eat them with apple sauce. These pucks of potato were way too brown, and shaped in mounds rather than flat even spheres. They were likely deep fried too. If you make them oddly shaped you won't be able to cook them evenly, so the inside texture will be way different than the outside edges. These were so bad. After paying for the meal (that last pic is how we left our plates) my parents told me in German, "we don't need to come here again". Do NOT come here if you want German food. Maybe drink a beer here for the vibes and get that Baltic Charcuterie board, but otherwise I would never order anything else here again.
