We had a really lovely birthday dinner this evening. The staff were so friendly, the atmosphere was chilled and we never felt rushed. The food was so tasty and looked beautiful. I had the prawn cocktail and the chicken supreme and my husband had the hog starter and the halloumi salad. The staff made us a Happy Birthday dessert to go with our coffee's which was so kind. At the end the bill handling was so efficient that we didn't have an option to leave a tip and we don't carry cash. We felt really bad but wanted to make sure we left them a review to say thank you at least! You guys should add a tip option! You deserve it.
We had a fantastic experience! My brother, who is vegan, was visiting, and the menu had great options for him as well as for the rest of us. From start to finish, the meal was excellent. We ordered a variety of dishes, including the veggie roast, beef brisket, duck breast, crab, and steak – all cooked perfectly. Starters were also impressive: prawn cocktail, goat’s cheese with beetroot and lentil dal, and pork – each one delicious. Portion sizes were generous, and we enjoyed sharing dishes. The ambience was lovely, with a relaxed atmosphere and great service. Highly recommend!
Relaxed, casual restaurant with fantastic food. Brisket pie and grilled halloumi mains were delicious. Service was friendly and not rushed. Good value for money. Will definitely return
Goats cheese croquettes, the most outrageous prawn cocktail I've ever had (Queenie scallops in it! Small brown shrimp, big king prawns AND crayfish!), chips to die for and a vegan mousse so perfect I actively chose that over the equally great ice-cream it came with. And home made hokey-pokey (the middle of Crunchie bars if you didn't know). Decent wine-list, nothing outrageously priced and all out the kitchen before you could say 'Get Graham the chef to move down to Southend immediately'. The bill doesn't even COME with service added but of course we tipped. Thank you boss for recommending this. We'll be back.
Myself and my husband were in York last weekend to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary/my 50th birthday. I wasn't overly impressed with the vegan option for breakfast at our hotel so thought we'd book in somewhere for Sunday and Monday morning. On the Saturday night as we were ambling back to our hotel my husband showed me Galtres Lodge which is where he was going to book for our stay but the only room available had a bath but not a shower. Anyway we were looking at the menu at Forest (where Galtres guests eat) and I was impressed. We called in and booked for the following morning. I had the Gardener's Breakfast and my husband had the Santa's Breakfast, they were so tasty and the atmosphere and service so good we booked in for our evening meal. We both had the roasts, mine was the vegan option. They were so incredibly tasty, we didn't want them to end. Even the sprouts (which I never eat!) were polished off! We had breakfast here again on the Monday morning and it was excellent again! I hope we'll be able to come back to York sooner than we had done (we last came 21 years ago when we got engaged) and return to Forest. Highly recommend it!
The restaurant has a great atmosphere. The young staff were friendly and attentive. I was served quickly and got my tea and food straight away. However, I was there in winter at around 3 p.m. The food tasted very good. The salad side dish also tasted fresh. I really enjoyed everything about it! Thank you very much for this cosy restaurant with lovely vegetarian dishes.
Went to the forest restaurant as it looked really inviting from the outside! Went for lunch a group of 4 of us. Food was delicious and I mean delicious!! So fresh and yummy! Serviced I marked a 4 due to servers being slower than usual. But overall would recommend and eat again.
We had an absolutely stunning dinner here. Booked a table a few days in advance. Asked for a dog friendly table. It appears to be a very cute table separated from other tables and we felt very safe (dog wise) and cozy. Had goats cheese croquettes and whole hog as starters and lamb as mains. I was so tempted to lick my plate 🤣 And to finish we decided to have dark chocolate fondant (one each obviously)! Nice wine, very friendly service and brilliant food!
Great vegan options! I had the Buffalo Cauliflower Wings which was so tasty, followed by the Affogato (espresso and vg ice cream) and also just to mention the Merlot wine is vegan too. Pictures of all of the above attached. The service was excellent and we absolutely loved the decor and atmosphere of this place too. Would definitely visit again! Thankyou for a lovely evening 😊
Such a beautiful place. We came for breakfast (two days in a row!) and opted for eggs benedict (classic & veggie option which is served with either spinach or mushrooms) & granola/ berry jogurt. The food is very delicious & I can only highly recommend this restaurant, the atmosphere is absolutely stunning & seriously so chill! They also offer rooms (B&B) upstairs and I regretted not booking with them, next time! staff is very friendly and fast (seriously! the food / drinks arrived promptly & they had lots of people to serve). If you are looking for a unique dining option, check this one out!
I am in LOVE with this place! The food was AMAZING. It’s so cute and unassuming from the outside, but once inside, it’s extremely cozy and welcoming. Every course I ordered was delicious, and plated beautifully. The portion sizes were perfect, well balanced and seasoned. I thoroughly enjoyed everything I ate. The seasonal soup (mushroom soup when I went) was rich and hearty, without being too heavy. The duck breast for my main was cooked to perfection. The sticky toffee pudding (my favorite!) was moist, warm, and decadent. I will definitely be going back the next time I’m in York
Really nice atmosphere and service. Food was great. Only thing I thought was odd was paying extra for Yorkshire puddings on a Sunday roast. But the price including Yorkshire's was what I'd expect so not a complaint at all. I would definitely go again if in York.
A wonderful meal here on a wet Tuesday in October. We were easily able to get a 6.00pm booking but when we arrived there were plenty of other tables occupied. This was in contrast to many restaurants we saw whilst in York. The food options for dinner were pretty good and we ordered the Yorkshire pig/black pudding starter and the lentils and for mains the salmon and house burger. All well presented and tasty. Volume was such that we couldn't manage the sticky toffee pudding. Reasonable prices. The young girls looking after us were really lovely.
We really enjoyed our meal at Forest. The food, service and interior decor were all great. Would recommend the 'whole hog' starter (pork 3 ways with an apple sauce) and the Sunday lunch beef roast. Good portion sizes and the roast was reasonably priced (£18). Would definitely go back!
Excellent food and service; staff are all really friendly and our meals were delicious! Great value, would highly recommend :)
Wonderful breakfast, lovely staff, best waffles we have ever eaten. Cosy and warm atmosphere
One of my favorite restaurants in York! I found out about Forest from a YouTuber and glad I finally got to try it out. The ambience is perfect with their cozy outdoor and indoor seating. The staff here are also super friendly. As for the beer - try the local brews! Their selection is impressive. Also their apple crumb custard is AMAZING. Also if you're here for breakfast then I recommend the Yorkshire breakfast. It's just the right amount of food. Can't wait to visit again soon.
A great Sunday spent here for part of my wife’s birthday celebrations. We had the feast and it didn’t disappoint. How they can give so much quality food for the price charged is amazing. Both my wife and I were left very happy and full with good quality ingredients in copious amounts. The bread and soup were excellent as were the meat and cheese sharer. As for the roast beef and trimmings, well I would happily travel to york just for this. Service extremely friendly and relaxed. A perfect Sunday all round.
Quality food and friendly staff sum this restaurant up nicely. The outdoor seating area is well heated and ideal for a pre-dinner aperitif. Menu choices are a bit limited, but the quality of what is there more than makes up for it. Really good location in Central York, close to the minster. Update: August 2023 - Second visit to this lovely restaurant, but this time with our little dog 🐕. Superb experience 👌
A nice restaurant near York Minster. We went on a Tuesday evening and it was still fairly busy so recommend to book on a weekend. The food was lovely. My husband had the lamb and was really pleased with the portion too. It was our wedding anniversary and they surprised us with a dessert plate wishing us a happy anniversary. The atmosphere and decor was quirky and charming :)
Had a really lovely and chilled brunch at Forest. The place is very unassuming on the out side, but once inside it's very cosy. The food was brilliant and the local beer is really worth trying as well.
Best rump steak ever; burger equally as nice and really enjoyed a pint of Hawkstone Lager
This was delicious! I recommend 100% Staff is adorable 😊
We were lucky enough to sample the Forest Afternoon Tea after many hours of researching the delights York had to offer. Being my partner's birthday, I wanted to organise something a little bit different. Hands down - this was the best afternoon tea we'd ever experienced. From the moment we arrived, we knew it was going to be special. The table was laid out beautifully for us. The menu was ready on the table, so we knew what delights we had in store. The tea bags were ready on a board. Let the feasting commence! A different tea accompaniment for each of the 5 incredible courses. Most of the teas are from a local tea shop just around the corner (which we very much utilised afterwards). The food was superb. All carefully handmade and delicious. We certainly left feeling full. The best bit was the value - for everything we ate and drank, we were stunned and delighted by the final bill. We are telling everyone we know about this - it was a brilliant experience and made our trip wonderful.
Second time there and didn't disappoint! The staff are friendly and welcoming. The menu has a something for everyone and the atmosphere is delightful! They were able to fit us in without booking as well, which was a great bonus!
The Forest was a great little find in York, decor inside is unique, but charming. There is a lovely secret garden outdoor space. We went for breakfast and we wasn't disappointed, service was very good and quick. Looking forward to coming again.
Stunning location and a beautiful setting for a delicious fry up. I spotted this restaurant whilst walking round York. The food and serving were excellent.
A beautiful restaurant. From the service to the food we thoroughly enjoyed it. Even more so my girlfriend whose birthday it was and waiter Dave made it extra special for her. 😊
Stopped in twice . 1st time because it looked nice ,2nd because we loved the 1st. The atmosphere is lovely, it's cozy, the staff were great. If your visiting york don't miss out on this lovely place!
Me and my girlfriend came for a meal and it was lovely, the theme and atmosphere was all done so well and the food was very well done and presentation was spot on. Staff were super friendly and very attentive to us. Would recommend and come back again.
Really enjoyed our visit here. Food was really nice and the beer was really good and well kept (the beer was the clarksons farms beer btw) I asked to move seats for my own reasons and the venue accommodated without issue. We had the mixed grill and it was lovely.
A really great first meal there. We had the burger which was really tasty and the lamb which just fell off the bone, it was delicious, wish I had picked it rather than the burger, it was so nice!! A really lovely non-chain place to eat. We will certainly be back.
We had the Yorkshire Breakfast this morning, which came with toast, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, black pudding, and beans. The food was average overall – the seasoning could have been better, and the scrambled eggs were quite dry. The atmosphere and interior were lovely, which made the experience more pleasant. Service was okay, but the staff weren’t particularly friendly. Not bad, but not something we’d rush back to.
In the heart of York. I had fish n chips, with mushy peas. Other half had a chunk of salmon. Both enjoyed immensely. Excellent staff. Tad loud but conversation still easy. Pudding stuffed us. We had crumble and creme brulee, which could have been a bit crisper on the top, YMMV depending on preference. We'd go back happily.
Sweet and atmospheric. The food was nice, however, no little trimmings to embellish the dishes we had, which were eggs benedict and eggy bread. Would recommend the chai latte and the mocha which were made with attention to detail. Polite and attentive staff.
Came here under all the online posts and social media attention this place has gotten. Made a reservation but arrived early and the accommodated. Place is quant and very attractive inside. They sat us at a table but was not the most comfortable as they had huge metal type table legs that make it hard to get in and out of. I hit my knee a few times and foot got stuck once just trying to get out. Took sometime for anyone to come around to introduce themselves as our server. Like maybe 20 minutes. Even after we received our order we didn’t see our server again. We had to flag them down to get our check. Food was very tasty and satisfying. Very comforting on a rainy night. If I am ever in York again I may comeback but hope they improve on their service.
Cute place and friendly staff. We were disappointed by the vegan options on offer though. We came because we saw there was a vegan breakfast, but the tofu scramble was just plain, uncooked tofu with a sprinkle of black pepper on it. Needs to be fried up with onions, garlic, spices, maybe some tomatoes or chilli! The rest of the breakfast (spinach, tomatoes etc) was also unseasoned. The veg bites were nice. I had the coconut milk porridge which was nice! Would have liked some nut butter or more protein as an optional addition. Also would have liked all this to be labelled as vegan clearly on the menu. Still giving 4 stars though because overall nice enough and it's a cute vibe inside.
Wonderful service with lovely food in quirky woodland setting. A must eat place when in York. It is actually quite difficult to find this lovely restaurant, the outside present with a wealth of green foliage hides FOREST sign. Once inside, the service is a delight and food is just about perfect. We had the forest sharer for starters; this was simply delicious..I fact we kept the remaining mushroom sauce for our steak - yea there was just to much for the two of us! Our main was the rump steak from the local farm. While the med-well steak was closer to well done and the cheese sauce was a little to rich. Everything else was spot on; pepper sauce had lovely kick to it, the home cooked skin on chips where lovely too. Even the onion rings, crispy yet melt in the mouth. The steak, even though slightly over cooked, was tender and full of flavour and everything just worked. If we were staying longer, I would go again.
We went into Forest for a rather small lunch since we weren’t too hungry to begin with. We decided to go here because of its cozy and unique decor and interior. The food tastes top notch and the environment is bustling and comfortable. Some servers had an attitude, but perhaps that’s due to it being the weekend. Anyway, food was great and the experience was generally quite good.
The food was delicious. The staff were ok but not really friendly. We requested champagne and got Cava. We ordered a second bottle and got something different. We did tell the staff but didn't get much bonhomie. We liked the menu which was small but interesting with food for all tastes
I went there for my wedding anniversary. Atmosphere and service were great but, food was not as tasty as we expected. We were looking for authentic British food. It was good but not as tasty as we thought. I read the reviews of the restaurant before going, which I think were merely based on other types of dishes offered at the restaurant so, this is why I write this review considering more British dishes were not as tasty as we thought.
We have visited a few times and enjoyed ourselves, but for some reason service and food was below par this time. Started off badly with the waiter dropping our tray of drinks - followed by a hurried clear up - but not a word to us of apology or any pleasantries when the drinks were replaced piecemeal. The other staff were pleasant enough, but we both felt that the food was below par this time. My Cauliflower Buffalo Wings could have been flavoured so much better, and my son did not think highly of the olive tapenade and did not finish it. Will not hurry back.
This was the worst Sunday lunch I’ve ever had. My boyfriend had green potato’s on his plate, the rest of the meal was so overcooked it was either really dry or completely mush! It was also really bland and had no flavour. No one came to ask us how our meal was and when I told the server who I assume was the manager about the potato’s he didn’t seem to care at all. My boyfriend’s cider was also completely flat. I wouldn’t recommend and feel very upset to have had to spend my money on this!
We usually dine at the French restaurant La Restique in York. This time we decided to try a new restaurant. My son did the search on Google on found this restaurant for us, that showed a good rating. When we entered the restaurant, the decoration was old and shabby. I have passed this restaurant many times before, thinking it’s a pub, passing it quickly as it looked shabby. The restaurant smelt like an old pub and the place was dirty. The artificial leaves and empty champagne bottles were covered with a large amount of dust and grease, that it made me feel ill. Because my son booked the restaurant, I didn’t want to leave and make him sad. We were placed at the table quickly in the booths. I had to sit away from the window next to me because of how dirty it was. One glance at the printed menu made me very suspicious about the food that was coming. I ordered the Focaccia. What arrived was toasted old focaccia pieces from the oven, disgusting minced olives on the side, that did not resemble focaccia. Non of us ate it. Goat cheese croquettes were balls of goats cheese in breadcrumbs, on a bed of old and faded salad. The vegetables were shredded to pieces, so I couldn’t pick them up with a fork. We ordered two “brisket” sandwiches with a French dip. First of all it wasn’t brisket, at all. The cheese tasteless like it didn’t exist. And the dip was completely bland. For main course I had fish and chips with a bowl of salad on the side. That arrived with HAIR in it, and was so sent back. So was the salad as a result. My sons had the roasted turkey with potatoes. The potatoes were green. Which is why they should not be served as they are poisonous. there was hardly any gravy in it. It was vile. The waitresses seem to be totally unaware of anything. They sailed between the tables as question marks. The restaurant did not charge us for the fish and chips with salad. When we pointed at the green potato, and informed them about the risk of serving green potatoes, the waitress replied “Oh”. We hurried to leave the place, never to return. Avoid at all costs. If I could give 0 stars I would. Dr Linda Williams
Absolutely awful rude member of staff and her manager! The staff member who spoke to me like a child should not be in the hospitality! After the mediocre food, I tried to quietly speak to the manager to give feedback on a member of his staff. He continued making coffee, hardly looked at me then actually told me to calm down lol. No surprise the waitress was rude if his attitude was an example. Pity I didn’t read previous reviews, obviously I’m not the first to experience this dreadful attitude towards their customers. If there is someone above this rude individual I suggest you have a serious word with your staff. Never again will I visit this place.
