Chengdu Taste is a popular Sichuan restaurant known for its authentic and flavorful dishes, generous portions, and reasonable prices. The toothpick lamb and boiled fish with green pepper sauce are highly recommended. Some find the noodles too soft and the spice level intense.

Excellent! One of the best meals I’ve ever had in my life. Everything cooked perfectly and so flavorful! I feel like there’s something here for everyone. Not one dish is just “okay”. They’re all fantastic! The Tan Tan noodles, the popcorn chicken dish, the lamb!!, the chengdu fried rice. I’m just wow. I love this place. Please go eat here and tell everyone you love!
We loved this restaurant! Everyone was friendly and the food was delicious! We got the deep fried chicken with red chili pepper, the sautéed string beans, the spicy arden lettuce, wontons with red chili sauce, and the griddle cooked shrimp with mixed vegetables. We recommend all the dishes, especially the griddle cooked shrimp. We’ll be back!
Yummy, yummy, yummy!!!!!! Long time no Chinese food. We got Toothpick Lamb,Flavored Chicken in Chili Sauce and Boiled fish . Still delicious is still my favorite. The quality is excellent, And they will always be a very reasonable price.Everything good.Highly recommended!
Authentic and deliciously good, definitely numbs your tongue quite quickly but the food was very well done. The Veggie dishes were very good, complimented the Meats really well. Would definitely recommend if you want to have a szechuan style meal.
Really good, spicy food. Love the beef with cilantro and pickled pepper, the eggplant, and the pork hock. Received a complimentary dessert because got an order wrong—very responsible people!
My go-to restaurant for Sichuan food - extensive menu, delicious food, excellent value.
One of my favorite Chinese food places. I live in the Bay Area and come here every time I’m in LA. Yesterday I drove 2hrs from laguna beach to eat here for dinner! The flavor is so on point - delicious, authentic, good quality ingredients, and good prices. We always get: green peppercorn fish (though over the years they seemed to have dialed down the peppercorn numbing flavor), toothpick lamb, chicken gizzard, and 2 pepper frog. With a side of rice and the plum juice - always a great meal!
The food is very tasty and service is very good too! Will come back.
Everything tasted great! My favorite was boiled fish in green pepper. Plenty of street parking. Waited for 15-20 mins when we arrived at around 7pm on Saturday.
This place is a classic and one of the first to bring sichuan. I ordered something new, grassfish in red chilis and it was well cooked but grassfish is super chewy. I would not recommend it if you are not used to it. Grassfish is asian carp. I enjoy fish more at Tai er. In general, this place is great, just didn’t order the right items.
I have been to this restaurant a couple time. Definitely would like to come more often. I had tried their toothpicks lamb and it's was delicious. Fragrant cumin flavor with perfect amount of spiciness. Recently, I have fallen in love with their Dan Dan noodle. I have been ordering to go Dan Dan noodle. $9.99, it looks small. But they packed their noodle and it's actually 2x as many as you think there is. Their sauce is a bomb: numb, fragrant with sesame/peanut/nutty flavor with nice spicy flavor. Minced pork (some may think the portion of pork is small) and not too many other ingredients. But the sauce is definitely to die for. Absolutely delicious.
We were craving spicy food and this is the winner. We had toothpick lamb with cumin, flourless pork belly and crispy shrimps with ground pork french fries. It is really delicious. The pork belly was just ok but the other 2 dishes was a hit. We will have to try the other dishes next time.
Thank you J Kenji for the recommendation! This was my first time eating LAs best schezwan food. The tooth pick lamb was fantastic and the egg plant was solid! This is the most authentic chinese food around. The spice and heat were nothing for the bland palate. Got the food to go for a group but I’d recommend eating in the restaurant if able. It was very clean and the staff were kind and considerate taking serious pride in the food and the history of its making.
Five out of five stars. Love and adore. Incredibly spicy, Szechuan style food; intensity flavored and aromatic, this kind of food is dryer and spicier than south Chinese food that incorporates lots of sauce. You won't find things like almond duck on this menu - every dish packs a whallop, and it's incredible!! Standouts are the poached fish in super spicy broth; white fish simmered in a broth laced with liberal amounts of Chinese vinegar and laden with chili peppers. Plenty of greens and celery make this a hearty, sour, spicy, soul warming dish. I also love the hot and spicy Chinese eggplant; the eggplant is not overcooked, which helps it retain it's almost meat like toothyness that is so so good with a little rice to mop up the chili garlic sauce it comes swimming in. Guess Guess shrimp is just shrimp and french fries, which should please some of the pickier members of your group. I also loved the Ma Po Tofu. I know every Szechuan place does Ma Po Tofu, but this was something special. Tofu is creamy and sublime, melting into a savory and highly spicy backdrop of chili peppers and garlic. I ate some much my lips went numb from the heat! Chengdu Taste: come hungry, like spicy, and be ready to blow your nose. ;-)
Ohhh all those Sichuan peppercorns swimming in the broth of the green chili boiled fish, mouth-numbing citrusy juniper aroma. So good and so unique. The cold garlic noodles were perfect to cool off the fire but some other patrons were drinking yogurt. Whatever helps you enjoy the spicy and yet bursting in flavor dishes. We ordered the green beans (amazing), toothpick lamb (amazing), and the incredible boiled fish with all the Sichuan peppers your mouth can handle.
Definitely the place to go for authentic Sichuan Chinese food. Food is spicy but there are options for milder dishes. Highly recommend the hot pot dishes. Wait can be a little long since there is not a lot of seating inside. Overall, the best Chinese food I’ve had and a must try for anyone!
Casually serving up some of the finest Sichuan Chinese food in all of LA. Strongly recommend the cold dishes including the little sister rabbit and the jelly noodles (as long as you don't mind eating around the bones). They truly deliver on the classic slowly building tongue numbing heat that makes Sichuan food special, balancing with savory flavors that makes each bite a small triumph. I guess there's a reason this place has been an SGV staple for so many years.
Sichuan dishes with real numbing heat—mapo tofu and toothpick lamb are standouts. Servers will warn you about spice levels if you ask. Interior is simple and clean. Good for groups willing to share plates. Parking in the plaza can be chaotic at dinner
Sorry, no photos. Ate it all. Couldn't give 4.5 stars for inadequate seats and a long wait. But having said that, the toothpick lamb made up for everything. Food is excellent. Service is fast. Go. Early.......OK: Update! I went early for Mother's Day. I tried to control myself so I could snap a photo for you. Everyone takes photos of the Toothpick Lamb (a must order), but I had some Fish, Mapo tofu, and the green beans too. Enough leftovers not to have to cook this week. Enjoy!
Really good. The Toothpick Lamb was a surprise and a highlight. It was very tasty, well seasoned and a delight because I don't usually order lamb at many places. The Boiled Beef in Hot Sauce was the main reason for our visit and was really good. We were actually expecting it to be spicier but that's okay because it was so good. We also ordered the Sauteed String Beans which I would highly recommend. Spicy and good flavors. I also ordered the Twice Cooked Pork Fried Rice which was awesome.
The BEST! Mouthwateringly numbing delicious spicy Szechuan legendary spot in Alhambra. Was inspired to leave our bubble in the Westside to visit a top restaurant in Jonathan Gold’s Best 101 Restaurants in Los Angeles List. Chengdu Taste was everything we wanted... aromatic, layers of flavour, surprisingly light and not greasy. The chefs know how to cook and it’s evident in every single dish. The numbing taste catches up so first your tongue and lips then nose and head may start tingling. Water doesn’t help. Eat rice or vegetables. It will ease up but it’s a very surreal feeling. We ordered 9 dishes Fresh Fish in green pepper sauce Chicken and vegetables in red chilli sauce Fried chicken with red chilli Lamb cumin Mapo Tofu Won ton in red sauce Won ton in numb sauce Green vegetables Pork in garlic sauce Seriously all were so good. My nephew who loves spicy foods declared Chengdu Taste his “favourite restaurant ever.” Mad props to Top Chef All Stars LA to feature a Jonathan Gold episode.
One of the BEST eating experiences I've ever had. Not only had I never been here before, But I had never tried Szechuan food. I'm not local to this area, but my friends one day were raving about this place. We drove over 40 minutes to go here, And honestly I didn't expect too much, Just wanted to hang with the boys, But once I took my first bite- Wwwaaaaoooooowww. I was SO surprised at how unique and delicious this flavor was. We ordered a lamb plate, where they served it with toothpicks, I'm uncertain of the name of the dish, But my goodness. It was one of the best things I've eaten. I love spice, and this was spice in such a unique way that I had never had before. My lips were numb, not in an uncomfortable way, but in a truly exciting way as far as a food experience is. We also got other plates, But to me the clear stand out was the lamb dish with the toothpicks. If this place was any closer, I'd be paying rent there, eating there like 3 times a week 😂 The staff is friendly and extremely accommodating, attentive, and helpful. Our dishes came with this lovely tea, and perfectly steamed rice. It was such a satisfying experience all around that I had to write this review to support their business. Now, I don't think I'll be able to eat Szechuan food anywhere else and honestly- I am not upset about that. If you haven't tried this hidden gem, It's with the trip out to experience it. Parking is... Horrible honestly, the restaurant faces a busy street, But even still, It's absolutely worth going here. Bring anyone who's like me and hasn't tried Szechuan before, And they'll be just as happy with their experience as I was. Look forward to coming back here in the future.
Eat here every time in LA ..... Twice this week. Best Sichuan Food Spot in North America..... Period. Enough said!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 O yeah..... Lip smacking good. Always feel like a winner....eating here.
this is a must try. it is one of my favorite places in the SGV and is easily the best sichuan restaurant i have ever been to. i strongly recommend the zajiangmian, and all of the cold dishes. the sliced pork with garlic sauce is standout. i have not tried much else from their menu yet, but i would feel confident ordering any dish. the portions are generous and the pricing is fair. if you like sichuan food, get in your car right now and get over here. it’s worth it.
Hands down the best (not one of) Sichuan restaurant in LA. Food is not just spicy, but actually flavorful! Service is great. Considering the portion size, the pricing is actually very reasonable. 10/10 recommend!
Chengdu Taste “real Hunan style” one of our all time favorite Chinese Restaurants, simply the best! Tonight, food quality was perfect, delicious! Service was over the top, Young gentleman and two, lovely ❤️❤️ young ladies working the floor tonight were so awesome. they took real good care of us, like royalty 🙏🏻🤗 Highly recommend Chandu Taste,, the Original location-San Gabriel-Alhambra 🇺🇸
I can’t believe I’ve never posted a review on THE Chengdu Taste! It’s beyond!!! 🍲 You can’t miss no matter what you order, I’ve literally never got disappointed in trying out new dishes at Chengdu Taste. This Michellin awarded restaurant sure plays a big role in putting some pounds on me but I’ll take it! 👫 I love the team at Chengdu Taste, they all are wonderful, helpful and observing. 🌶️ Spicy but yummy, so enjoy the kick! Also the team double check with the spice levels. I wished I lived nearby so that I can come every other day!!! PS: can we please bring back the spicy soup noodles…
Wanted an authentic Sichuan experience, and definitely got it here. I would NOT recommend ordering things extra spicy, because they are already sufficiently spicy thanks to the plethora of red chilis served with pretty much any dish. The lamb bites were delicious, the green beans were well prepared, and the beef with ginger was tender + delicious. The boiled fish in soup dish was a standout winner. Prices were a tad high but commensurate with the value and portion given. Would definitely recommend!
The best “Chinese food” (in this case, actually Szechuan) in all of LA. This place has been around for years and it’s actually gotten better since Covid. Large shareable portions, reasonable prices, great service (they even pack up your to-go), and most importantly legit awesome flavors. The green beans are a favorite, and we recently loved the cold green pepper oil chicken and veggies on skewers and tomatoes with egg. You can’t go wrong here.
Great Chinese restaurant offering authentic Sichuan cuisine. Most of the dishes are spicy so be prepared, but they taste delicious. Had to wait on Saturday for dinner but once seated the food came out quickly and service is great. The value for each dish is incredible, very affordable and huge portions. Very flavorful and filling.
Such a treasure - very appropriate for Bib Gourmand! Pickled peppers with chicken gizzards were very very tender and fresh, as how it should be in chengdu. green peppers with fresh fish was as good as the signature dish at Mountain House but at half of the price. All the dishes reminded us of home. The ice jelly was a great closure of a feast for the taste buds. The quantity was so large that we had enough left over for another meal. Great services too!
My sister has been trying to get me to try this place for a while now, and finally I made it there. There was 5 of us and we ordered 6 items, 1 white fish soup 1 eggplant 1 cucumber salad 1 lettuce salad 1 shrimp with veggies 1 crispy beef More than enough food, we could have had 6th person and would have been enough. Everything was delicious , the menu doesn't do justice to the food and the ingredients. Price was also very reasonable. Around $120 for everything. This place is great if you go with 4+ people. If you cant handle spicy food, this place is not for you.
The food was absolutely amazing! It was a flavor bomb explosion in your mouth and nothing else mattered. The restaurant is small and comfortable and lunch was affordable. I live in Los Angeles and will never buy Sichuan Cuisine here again. OMG, delicious.
Great food with a cozy vibe! The service was friendly, and the menu had a nice variety. I especially loved the pasta dish; it was cooked to perfection. Prices are reasonable for the quality. Definitely worth a visit!
Park in street. Price is fair. Portions fair. Scan qr code and order from phone then itll say order submitted. Pay regular like u do at a restaurant. First time here suggested with friend. We also got the toothpick spicy lamb. Good stuff. With a chicken dish and shrimp fried rice. The shrimp fried rice was perfect had peas egg shrimp. The chicken didnt taste like chicken but thats chinese food right. Not the lamb had like 50% fat. Maybe 10% gristle. Quality of meat could be way better. The service ppl weren't the most friendly and welcoming. Idk. I smiled and thanks and everything and it felt like cold shoulder. The food was ready in a blink of an eye lol. Would i go back? Idk. Leaning more towards no based on quality of meat unfortunately. Theres a reason why i prefer grass fed steak . All 3 dishes came out to like $68 total. The dishes here were really different which was cool too btw. Also chew carefully, u might catch a bone and a lot of gristle.
Chengdu Taste is a staple place in the area to get Sichuan food. I visited on a Saturday, when they are open all day. There was plenty of free street parking directly in front of the restaurant. During the weekdays, they close between 2:30-5 PM. Ordering is done on their tablet or you can scan the QR code on your phone. Using different devices to order is fine. Rice is ordered individually at $1.50/bowl, but they served it all into one red rice pot. (We had a party of five.) When we asked for more rice, they happily obliged. The following dishes were solid and well-liked by the entire group: -twice cooked pork -dry pot vegetables -fried intestines -water boiled fish We also had the beef with cumin, but this was not spicy. It also came out last, and we ended up boxing the leftovers. The server spoke English. There were bathrooms in the back. Credit card/Apple Pay accepted.
Amazingly spicy and tasty. Just as good as the one in Vegas. Many of the dishes are also numbing, due to the Chinese peppercorn and it's oil. So many favorite dishes, especially the fish (be sure to pick live fish). Super authentic ❤️. A previous fish had numerous scales, hopefully they pay more attention. Skip the Tan Tan noodles here since they over cook noodles and go to Chong Qing Special Noodles for the best in the area. Service is fast. The atmosphere is lively!
The food here is so good! Yes, they have spicy food. But it's also quite delicious. Their fried rice is also pretty good even though it's not spicy. You can ask them to make something not so spicy if you want to. The quality is excellent, and so is the service! I'm surprised to see how many non-chinese there were eating there. The spicy fish and lamb barbecue sticks quite good. So is the Chengdu fried rice.
Maybe this is just a preference thing. This place tastes authentic, no doubt. But it’s way beyond my own spicy tolerance level, both the regular and numbing spice. And the flavors themselves, im just not accustomed to. Maybe it’s the heavy use of herbs/spices that I’m not used to? This place is packed, so clearly it has fans :p.
5 star for the food. Have to say, as a Chinese myself, the food is authentic Szechuan. Just thinking about it now makes my mouth water. The price is reasonable, and the serving of the dishes is big. 3 Star for the service. The service is fast and is minimally satisfactory but is nowhere near good. The service staffs seem to be very stressed out and would not bother ask you how the food is or at least take your order with a smile. Also, sometimes the chef forget to put some side ingredients and you’ll have to tell the service staffs ASAP, or they will argue with you and say you just ate them. Overall: 4 stars.
Takes credit card. Staff understands a little English. They can cook mild spicy too. To go friendly and microwavable containers. #107. Double cook pork fried rice, spicy. $12.99 is okay. Probably will not get again. #38. Pork intestine and chicken In earthen pot, spicy. $19.99. Is mostly potatoes. #82. String Beans, spicy. $10.99. Total: $48ish
Arrived there for a late dinner, and there weren’t a lot of customers. We scanned the QR Code and ordered the Cucumber Salad, Sliced Pork With Garlic Sauce, and Spicy Cumin Chicken Gristle. I’d say they were all pretty good, and I really liked the cucumber salad. We finished all the dishes. Great place to go if you wanna try out some spicy Chinese food, and I’d go back to this place to try out other dishes if possible.
Came here on a weeknight and there was no wait. There is street parking so can be difficult if it’s busy. You order from a QR code and the food gets delivered after sending it in. There are pictures so it helps with deciding what you want. Most of the food has that Szechuan spice so you will get that numbing goodness that is pretty additive. The inside has a couple of tables good for groups between 4 to 6. I highly recommend the Toothpick Lamb and Cold Noodles as they complement each other very nicely. The Kung Pao Chicken was pretty spicy but was delicious with white rice. Overall, enjoyed the food and how quickly everything came out!
Call before arriving if you’re wanting it to go. There’s not much to roam around here. Toothpick lamb - so good! Just get! Their portion was a bit smaller than I’d though but I’d still go back since it was so good! Mung bean noodle - it was a bit too soft for me. Don’t pour the entire chili oil container in. The bottom would be way too oily! Parking: parked on the side of the road.
had to wait 30 mins to be seated at 7 pm on a Monday night. the place prob should be 2x bigger than it is. ordering was through the app only, hope they still order old school for older people who don't do tech... the food was good, the flavor was good, it was a tad on the pricier side, but then they charged for rice, which was sad. the eggplant was just so so. also there no parking except for street, so prob won't be my 1st choice for szechuan.
Had a weekday lunch at Chengdu Taste with a friend I hadn’t seen in 10 years… who later blocked me over something absurd (emotional spice level: 10). Hopes were high: this place made Jonathan Gold’s Best 101, after all. I ordered the toothpick lamb with cumin and the boiled fish with green pepper sauce ($18 each), but sadly, both dishes left me more confused than satisfied. The lamb, allegedly a signature dish, didn’t wow, and the fish felt forgettable. Maybe I picked wrong. Maybe the chef took a personal day. Either way, the drama at the table was more memorable than the food. I’ll explore other SGV spots before coming back.
We preordered ahead, but when we arrived the restaurant said they couldn’t prepare our order on time. The waiter was rude and told us to cancel the order. Very unprofessional and disappointing experience.
Went there for a late dinner with family. Below average service, food quality was not good neither. Ordered wonton soup for kid but the stuffing tasted sour and not eatable. The two other spicy entrees were okay. Maybe due to it was shortly before closing, waitress were chatting and essentially no service was provided. We did not get any attention except for bringing the bill. Would not recommend this place.
Okay so we were curious to try this as we are avid Sichuan fans (Sichuan Impressions, Hunan Restaurant, etc) and we ordered the coupon Sliced beef and the boiled fish in green pepper sauce. The beef came first and it was pretty damn salty, but we started eating the beef on top that hadn’t touched the chili sauce. Thennnnn the soup came 😖. HOLLY SALT. like I took one sip of the broth and my mouth literally had salt burn. I couldn’t rinse my mouth out enough. I asked them to take it back to see if maybe there was an error on it- and they came back, and we tried it again and I kid you not, it was legit maybe 10% less salty. I legit was worried about my actual kidney health. Even now as I write this- my tongue tastes all the salt all over my teeth. I gave the service a 5 because they at least comped the soup (we actually didn’t even try a piece of the fish after the first spoonful of broth made us gag). The coupon beef could be really good- in that the flavor was good- and the beef quality was great- but even that was horrifically salty. 🧂
Worst food ever !!! Not fresh!! The food made me nauseous for days !ewww
This is the worst Chinese food I’ve ever had!!! The rabbit dish was full of small bones. The ginger beef dish was so hot it was inedible and all the sauce was pure chili oil. No flavor, just heat. Fast food places like Panda Express is heads and tails better than this place! God awful! What a waste of money. Never again!
This was one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had. After eating at Chengdu Taste, both of us got sick with diarrhea. We called the restaurant the next day to inform them — not to argue, but to raise awareness. Instead of showing any concern, the staff were incredibly rude and defensive. They kept questioning us and immediately claimed it couldn’t be their food. There was zero accountability and absolutely no courtesy. If I could give 0 stars, I would. Between the food safety issue and the unacceptable customer service, we will never go back — and I strongly recommend others think twice.
I visited Chengdu Taste on the evening of February 8th. Although Los Angeles has many excellent Sichuan restaurants, I have been bringing my family and friends to this location for years whenever I drive to LA. Unfortunately, this time the experience was extremely disappointing. Setting aside the hygiene issue of finding a small insect in one of the dishes, what truly upset me was the service at the end of the meal. After finishing dinner, I walked to the register myself to pay, knowing the staff were busy. I also requested a few to-go boxes and offered to pack the food myself to make things easier for them. A shorter manager wearing a hat (as later confirmed by another employee) told me to leave my card at the counter and that they would process the payment and bring the receipt to me. He told me to grab the boxes myself. After packing the food for my family, I returned to the counter because I needed plastic bags. I simply stood there quietly waiting. I did not say anything, did not rush anyone, and did not show impatience. Suddenly, the manager asked me what I was standing there for and told me not to “push” them because they were busy. I calmly responded that I was not pushing anyone. He then became visibly impatient, gestured with his right hand in a dismissive motion for me to leave, and refused to communicate further. I returned to my table feeling extremely disrespected. What made this more troubling was that at the same time, this manager was actively assisting another table of young white customers with their payment and packaging. I chose to be polite and self-sufficient, and the response I received was hostility. After years of supporting this restaurant, I am deeply disappointed. I will not be returning.
This was my second time here after having a great first experience there with two males as my server. The food quality and portion was not as great as the first but what was the worst part of my experience was two female servers asking for more tip AFTER I had already paid for the bill IN FRONT OF MY GROUP. They were not attentive in serving, we had to call them many times to get their attention. I had tipped what I felt was warranted and they came back to tell me that I need to tip higher. I will not be coming back due to this experience.
