Got the New Burger. It was great. The quick pickles were definitely towards the cucumber end of the spectrum which was super neat. Read a negative review that said the burgers are not as big as the Old Burger, and a rebuttal that that’s because of the new expensive grass fed beef. I recommend combining the new beef with the old size and charging a couple bucks more (or a couple Satoshis more; we will all be paying in Bitcoin soon!). I also saw the jackfruit option. I had a fun 18 month run of being plantbased before I was called back to the meatbased life. I am an ally to the plantbased peoples and I applaud all who accommodate their life choices. Curly fries were better than Arby’s and just as nostalgic. Atmosphere was cool, very East Austin. Will be back. Thanks for a quick bite!
Ooh the food is amaazing! I ordered the thai salad which is vegan with the fried tofu and curly fries. The margarita is strong and my partner had the tofu gf sandwich without mayo. The kimchi is delicious.
Great spot to meet friends in a casual backyard environment. They have a selection of international snacks and drinks in the fridges. I’ve enjoyed meeting friends in this cool spot for years. I especially like the artwork painted inside.
This place is pretty good all around. Ordered the smashburger, it was pretty perfect. Split with a friend as was not super hungry. Also tried the yucca fries. Tasted like potato, pretty good though. They did a good job frying them. Probably want to eat them while hot. They make a variety of very decent cocktails, have draft beers, They have a very nice patio, and it has a bit of shade and umbrellas. Very nice on a pretty day. Although this is probably not a great place to go in the rain. They occasionally have a band play and that's usually quite nice. Went there to see spliff kazoo band initially.
Fun east side spot that hosts tons of interesting events. Large outdoor areas in the front and back. Very dog friendly. Vegan food options and plenty of free parking.
We had lunch here yesterday. I had the grass fed burger with gluten free bun. Delicious!! We also ordered the yuca fries with dip sauce. The Micholada with a side car was refreshing. Very nice atmosphere. Great service. Plan to spend about 20-30 dollars with drinks per person.
Their Sunday brunch customer service earned my ongoing business, but it was their fried shrimp plate for supper that earned this review. Customer svc: gracious vibes, uncrowded, unrushed because they're that good. Shrimp plate: breading was just right with its own, contributing flavor, not soggy and falling apart. Shrimp were sm-med size, best for flavor. The rice wasn't supermarket-brand, tasteless starch, but thoughtful basmati rice. Even the broccoli stood out compared to all the cousin broccoli who die under counter heat lamps elsewhere. Keep up the good work, everybody.
Went on a Friday afternoon, sat outside with the misting fans going full blast, helping us stay cool. The chips and queso was awesome! Same with the Mango Margaritas 🍹
Great spot to hang out with friends. There is indoor seating and lots of outdoor seating. It has an eclectic/retro vibe. There are misters outside to help cool things down when it gets hot. We were there at night when it was still in the 90s and misters were on blast which was nice. Staff is friendly. The food is good and has a mix of different things. There are some vegetarian options. There are also a mix of cocktails and frozen drinks. No non-alcoholic frozen drinks when I asked though.
I absolutely love this place. The vibes the food just everything. My favorite is the “paint it black” margarita & the coconut shrimp & rice bowl !! Soooo delicious & refreshing. I love the outdoor set up they have a nice sized backyard area that accommodates a lot of people. They also have a cool thrift store set up on the front / side of the building where locals sell rly neat items from clothes to backpacks , purses etc and there are several locals who sell neat handcrafted jewelry as well. Such a vibe🌴🥥😎
Really awesome gathering of classic cars on Monday when I was there. I was there for that and have a couple, but decided to put something in my stomach. Boy did that end up being a good decision! The food is worth showing up for all in itself, and I think they make the best curly fries I've ever had!
Love this place! Food is always so yummy and the yucca fries have me in a chokehold 🤤
OMG, the yucca fries & chicken burger are slammin... And the staff are all really freaking helpful & friendly! I usually don't make it here early enough for the food, but the music, dancing & culture have drawn me back here constantly throughout the years... Even though I live across the river, now... I constantly suggest this as a meeting place whenever I get the chance, because the experience is always so delightful!
Great trendy spot for late night bites or anytime of day. Wonderful atmosphere friendly staff, and great drinks too.
Small boutique menu of unique craft cocktails and delicious foods with a couple of gluten-free options. Large back patio, artsy punk underground vibe carries spirit of artistic East Austin locals. You will pay for the ambience a bit, but it is worth it. Money goes back into local art scene.
Great brunch. You have to try the yucca fries, they are so good!! Fantastic patio with dogs and umbrellas. Chill vibes.
The perfect spot to take out-of-towners to showcase the best of trendy, cosmic cowboy Austin. Also good for relaxed work lunches, staff is friendly and accommodating. Food is on-point and fits a variety of dietary restrictions- our favorites are the shrimp, tofu sandwich (the quick pickles are delicious!) and yucca fries. I drool thinking about their yucca fries!
Always a great late neighborhood spot to get a bite. The burger is excellent, I also enjoy the curly fries and shrimp. It's in close proximity to art galleries in the area and a good spot to chill after the hop on 3rd Thursdays.
Good food, good drinks, good times 😏 We came on a random Sunday and were pleasantly surprised. Very fairly priced (for today’s Austin economy anyway). I got the burger and yucca fries. You get way more fries than I was expecting! And the strawberry pina colada is so yummy! We’ll be back to try dinner!
Came for brunch on a Saturday, and what a VIBE!!! Super casual, they are so cool and definitely not trying too hard. This place has so much personality and the FOOD!!! Was SO good. Had the kimchi breakfast sandwich and DANG!! Now I’m drooling. I felt cool eating there, and my mouth can’t wait to go back. They also have a patio which seemed nice too!
Came here to enjoy some drinks and food and work with friends. The burger is SO GOOD!! There was also the option to switch to a veggie patty. Highly recommend getting it. It’s pretty big and will fill one person up. The spicy cucumber margarita is delicious and refreshing, but not super strong. You can’t taste the liquor in it, which I like being able to taste, so maybe ask for a floater.
Absolutely insane! I cannot believe that I have passed by this before and didn’t know how incredible the food is! The burger is incredible and the jackfruit sandwich made me double guess my dedication to the meat-itarian lifestyle. It’s innovative design makes it a unique selling point, located in a completely revamped former gas station, you can see the shell was used to create incredible things. The decor is as the name would suggest, but isn’t diluted in anyway, absolutely adorable! For those scared about Covid the tables are super far apart, and the back patio area is massive and private. My only suggestion would be to somehow make it more known or more obvious as a restaurant, the first few times I passed by I assumed it was either a plant place or an abandoned independent gas station. Cheers!!
Went on a Monday night with all the old school hot rods come and park while everyone walks and talks about their prides and joys. Great atmosphere, met a ton of cool people, staff are super attentive and friendly and a chicken sandwich I ordered which had hot honey on it, first time I’ve ever tried hot honey, and it was phenomenal. Cheap beers, decently priced drinks, will definitely come here again
A great place to meet up with friends for food or drinks. The vibe is grungy cowboy. Lots of western imagery and tequila. The drink menu is heavily inspired by Mexican culture… palomas, margaritas, and lots of spicy tajin rims! But they add creative twists that make classic cocktails feel exciting and fresh. The food menu has a global energy. Coconut shrimp, bibimbap, yucca, cbd waffle ?????? It’s all over the place but aren’t we all? Every item is well executed so you can’t go wrong. I recommend ordering a few things and sharing!!
Love KT. The sesame chicken salad is delicious. Some of the best queso in town. Don’t skip the curly frys ♥️🖤
Absolutely amazing service!! The bar back (Isabella I think her name is) was so helpful and kind and gave great advice about what to do in the city. I definitely would bring my family back here just to speak with her again. Awesome vibes all around
Delicious burgers and cocktails! Very relaxed atmosphere. Space indoors and in the garden (and they’ve got heaters too). Good for big groups.
Great Bartender, Shawn was his name. Nice guy and had some good tips on how to make a NA cocktail even better.
First ran into this place when they had an art event . First lunch here today 11$ for wings. wings were great dry rub I got the ranch rub with a side of lime ranch . Fantastic ! Service very friendly . I like the atmosphere of an old gas station with a lot of plants semi open concept . Planning on trying it again !
First time here, its always busy on weekends. Went during week. Delicious chips queso and the margaritas lots of flavor and good alcohol.
The Crispy Tofu Sandwich is genuinely the best food I've ever eaten in my life. The remainder of my days will be spent in melancholic remembrance of this delicious sandwich. I had to order a second one to savor the limited time I can spend at this establishment. In your first precious moment of biting into this sandwich, you will have a brief moment for your hindbrain to think, "Wow, that's a good bun!" However, the instant your teeth reach the crispiest tofu you've ever encountered, you will enter pure, primal, animal shock. I pray you have your wits about you as you take your first bite, lest you lose yourself. Savor this spirit-shaking moment, and then rejoice as you discover that you can experience it again, and again, and again, as each bite rocks your central nervous system just as the first did.
This place is AMAZING, I’ve always seen this spot around the neighborhood but never went until now. 1st off the atmosphere is amazing, this is a great place to pregame, take a date on, or just go and chill, the wait staff is friendly and sociable and the vibes are off the charts in a good way. The food is delicious, the yucca fries are well Seasoned and are a great appetizer/snack to keep you from blacking out. The Sesame Salad is HUGE. Like normally some fries and a salad won’t fill me up but this salad alone left me stuffed. It was good, there were loads of chicken and spinach but most importantly they DID NOT SKIMP on the avocado at all. It was a ton of food tbh. Next time if I get the salad again I’ll probably get it by itself w/o the fries Lastly I just got the Paint it Black Marg and was highly satisfied. It was flavorful and boozy. Not boozy tasting to the point you wish there were more margarita mix and not too sweet/sour to the point you wish there were more tequila. Really a delicious drink. Overall let this review be a sign that you need to check this restaurant out. It’s reasonably priced food and drinks with a friendly staff and great atmosphere.
Updated: Been here a few times now. Food is consistently good and atmosphere is great for hanging out, especially outside without constant pressure to buy more. Staff are friendly but unobtrusive. ---' What a hoppin' kind of place! Burgers, yucca fries and kombucha qas great. Abundant outdoor seating made relatively comfortable with misters, fans and shade makes this place appealing for group events. Our Human Design Tribe Meetup was good and everyone enjoyed the venue. There was no pressure from wait staff, and we enjoyed hanging out for a couple of hours 😀.
Staff is always on point. Service is speedy AND accurate. Food is very top notch… some might say a little pricey BUT the quality is great and the portion sizes are big. Second shout-out to Sala, who nailed my very large order with speed and accuracy… also, damn good Guinness pour.
My kids and I shared a burger, curly fries, and fruit bowl. The burger was excellent and both sides were large quantities and very tasty. Also had a good cold brew coffee and OJ for the toddler. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Inside and outside spaces both seemed good; we chose AC. Everything gave a chill and positive feel, but our drinks came out before we left the counter and the meal was out rapidly - but clearly fresh. Great lunch spot.
Had a great relaxing lunch in the outdoor seating area at Kinda Tropical. My wife and I shared the yucca fries, and the smoked turkey and sweet potato bowl. Both were excellent. The staff at the bar were awesome and friendly and same with the guy circulating in the Seating area. Lots of fans to keep everybody somewhat cool, and a giant red oak tree providing shade, along with umbrellas over some of the tables. The outdoor seating area is set back from the street a bit and surrounded partially by vines and plants. Pleasant environment.
Kinda Tropical is everything you want in a chill Austin hangout spot. The vibe is laid-back but full of character — think tropical patio meets artsy industrial with plants everywhere and colorful touches that feel super inviting. The food? Absolutely hits the spot. Their small plates are perfect for sharing, and the flavors are fresh and creative. I especially loved the fries with house-made dipping sauces — simple, but done right. Great cocktails, too! You can tell they care about what they’re serving. It’s also surprisingly spacious, with both indoor and patio seating, making it ideal for any kind of hang — solo work session, date night, or catching up with friends. And bonus: it’s wheelchair accessible and open until midnight, which is a rare combo. If you’re anywhere near East 7th, don’t miss this place. It’s got that effortlessly cool Austin vibe down to a science.
We started are week long trip off here and it left such an impression we came back time final night for a nightcap. The drinks were great, food was perfect and just the right amount. The atmosphere here was one of my favorites from our entire trip, was great to just kick it in the back with some drinks
Cute little lunch spot close to the airport! Came here right after I landed and I ordered the curly fries, and shrimp! Both were 10/10 The shrimp was actually amazing and the sauce on top was chefs kiss the rice was flavorful too! The curly fries were hot, crispy and the garlic aïoli was sensational. The vibe in here were immaculate. Super cute and colorful. You order at the bar and then take a seat wherever you like! Definitely would come back!
This place is laidback and fun! The Draft Zombie was really good sipping and not too sweet which was great. Now, the Fried Shrimp was a treat. It was crispy, chewy and cooked to perfection, and had a slight sweetness in the flavor. The rice was the best I’ve had in a while, it was soft, dense, and the flavor of coconut was perfectly balanced. I really liked the pickled onions in the mix too, it cut the sweetness nicely. Fries came out a bit cold. I will definitely be returning here.
Kinda different but certainly tropical. I love the vibe at this place. It feels like classic Austin. An old renovated gas station turned into a great lunch spot serving good bites and delicious drinks. I had (a few) frozen cocktails to help beat the beat and they were delicious. Didn’t try any of the food but several friends in my party did and had great things to say. The patio in the back is amazing. So much seating and very chill vibes. Highly recommend!
Kinda Tropical is kinda amazing. The menu may be brief but the choices cover the spread (tofu, wings, Thai basil soup, salsa, burgers…etc.) and you can find something for everyone. And the food is GOOD…the burger as a litmus test, is fantastic with great flavor, texture, perfect portion, and just pure deliciousness. The curly fries may be considered dangerous by some, I recommend ordering to share. The drink variety is great, from beer on draft to house specialty cocktails, and non-alcoholic options (kombucha and waters galore). The outdoor seating is plenty and the music and atmosphere is lively and relaxed.
Showed up at Kinda Tropical for Sunday brunch just before the rush around 12ish. We were a little bit confused by the menu and ordered online because we didn’t realize we were supposed to go up to the front order first. So we got our food in to go containers which was fine because it was our mistake we didn’t really know that we needed to go out front to order. Once we got the food I have the egg sandwich which was eggscellent. We also have an order of the chicken wings which were outstanding and my date had fried shrimp which was also really good. It was such a great sunny day we were able to sit there for an hour or two just talking and everyone was super cool the staff was awesome and we will definitely be back not only for brunch but anytime!
Super nice place! I went last week for the tatto and little market and the vibes are super cool
We stopped in for a bite on a whim when our preplanned dinner location closed before we got there. Very clean and not too busy for a Friday night. This kitchy place has some character! Interesting art and plants all over. You place your order at the bar and choose your table inside or on their expansive patio. Food came out fast and was hot and fresh. Even for a group of our size (8) we were all eating almost the same time and very quickly. I would recommend this place to anyone looking to try something new.
The fried shrimp rice bowl is a must. The shrimp is coated with the best sauce I've tried and elevates the shrimp. It's delicious. I also ordered the fried chicken sandwich, which also had a great sauce. We ordered the strawberry piña colada, which wasn't strong, but it tasted really good. Good location to drink outdoors with a group of friends.
The vibe is laid back, there's a pulled jackfruit sandwich aiming to convert lovers of pulled pork, the happy hour has great deals on food and drinks, and the back patio is a chill, misty getaway, shaded by lush trees and canvas covers. The staff are friendly and did a great job of clearing our table and keeping things tidy as we journeyed through happy hour. Kinda Tropical is pretty cool!
Kinda Tropical has this cool I’m hanging out in my friends backyard vibe. They’re nice to host, make cocktails and provide food for you. If that’s what you’re in the mood for then Kinda Tropical is kinda what you’re looking for. People were nice, back patio has ample space and is dog friendly, food and drinks were ok. Best thing there are the yucca fries with the mayo dip.
We only came to Kinda Tropical for a Bloody Mary. The ingredients were not the ones listed on the menu, but it was still good. Looking at other tables dining, the food looked pretty fresh and ample portions. We will probably come back and sample the brunch menu. One drawback is the bathroom. It's a bit dark and very industrial, and not in a good way.
I found the food to be okay. The burger was good and fries were pretty standard. If you get the burger, just know that it doesn't come with a side and if you order fries they are $7. I wasn't pleased with their cocktails. They didn't have the best flavor. If you don't like the taste of alcohol, then these are for you. Had a little trouble with the service. One of the waitresses was pretty rude to our friend, but everyone else was really friendly. It's a great place to hang out back with friends and your fur babies. I would recommend trying it.
This venue is a laid back but chic minimal grocery with counter service food and drinks.Think Marfa meets Whip-In. Great patio and interior design from the people at Yellow Jacket. Food was tasty (expect brunch pricing) and the drinks were satisfying. Didn't check out the grocery as they were still stocking, but the space has a lot of potential-- just a couple kinks to straighten out. I look forward to visiting again soon.
It was a nice place and the vibes were fun but the p menu is limited. The space to order is cramped. Staff is amazing. The bar tenders are very kind and personable. The frozen drink selection was good and the chips and salsa were fine. It was a little pricey for what it was but i’ll be back.
Went Saturday afternoon for a thrift pop-up and grabbed a bite afterwards. The frozen strawberry pina colada was good. The griddleburger add egg and bacon was delicious, very good burger. My one complaint though was it took nearly a hour to get our food. It wouldn’t have been an issue if they set that expectation when I made my order. A “btw It’s going to be a long wait, over 45 mins, is that okay?” Would’ve went a long way. Would go back but would definitely ask food wait time before ordering. Also very dog friendly.
We stopped by for a quick lunch after a weekend at the lake with friends. Food was solid, we really liked the yucca fries. I had a michelada which was ok, but I preferred the sidecar more. Burger and bibimbap bowl were good too. The patio was nice but kinda hot. At least there was good shade and fans.
This place was great. Not super kid friendly, but we enjoyed our time. It's a repurposed gas station blended into its surroundings. Great outdoor area! So chill and probably really pretty at night. The burger was my favorite! My husband loved the pulled jackfruit sandwich, he couldn't tell it wasn't meat 🤭. I was hoping to try the CBD waffle, but it is only served during brunch time. Prices are fair and the happy hour is from 3 to 6. There draft beer selection was okay.
I can’t believe I’ve never been here considering I’ve lived near it for since it opened. I love all of the outdoor seating, that there are misting fans for when it’s hot, and that there are outlets at almost every table if you decide that you want to work there. The atmosphere is nice. It feels like what the eastside used to be 12 years ago when it was more hipster and less yuppie. They had a lot of clearly labeled gluten-free items on the menu. I ordered the egg sandwich. I liked it it was clearly identified as gluten-free when it arrived to the table. It was pretty yummy although I feel like it could’ve used some cheese. My husband ordered the chicken biscuit which looked amazing. We ordered a few drinks that hit the spot. And we started the meal with the queso. I would’ve rated this a five star experience except for that the workers were a little bit rude.
Good vibe and delicious food. I got a salad which was delicious and my partner liked his burger. I think the people working are pleasant but a bit spacey, I specifically asked about the happy hour discounts then ordered something that should have been discounted but I didn't receive the discount.
First time here and really like this space. Converted gas station. Lots of seating inside and tons outside in break. Great looking area. Smoking friendly outside. That said, I ordered the breakfast tacos and they were quite poor. Flour tortillas weren't warmed up or crisped and really need it. A little too thin and lacked flavor. Had bacon and egg and fake chorizo and egg. Nether filling was great, but not bad. Bacon one needed more filling. Rating this a 4 star because I really like the vibe of this place and my friends did was better. I'll come again. But... I won't get these tacos again.
We visited Kinda Tropical for lunch as a group of three and had a great experience. The place has a cozy, laid-back vibe with a nice dining space and a welcoming backyard that adds to the charm. We tried the chicken sandwich, Thai coconut salad, and sesame salad. The chicken sandwich was decent, but it didn’t quite hit the mark for us, so I’d give it 3 stars. The Thai coconut salad was flavorful and refreshing, earning a solid 4 stars. The real standout was the sesame salad, which was fresh, well-balanced, and absolutely delicious – definitely deserving of 5 stars. Overall, Kinda Tropical offers a relaxed atmosphere and some standout dishes that make it worth a visit, especially if you’re looking for a chill spot to enjoy a meal with friends.
Foodwise I think the thing to go for are the bowls. There's nothing especially Cuban about this place. The burger is OK. The yucca fries acceptable. They don't overcharge for Lone Star.
I frequent this place and enjoy the food and atmosphere but the service needs work. It's always a roll of the dice as to whether you will be treated coldly or not. One time I walked in with a can of music water (it's just water) and male bartender was very aggressive about me throwing it away. The white female bartender with long brown hair is so rude it's as if it's bothersome for her to take your order. This place would be stellar if there was just a warmer welcome and a familiarity, but it instead it often feels like I'm being intrusive by coming in.
The food is great but the outdoor area is smoking-friendly. We were surprised to see dogs roaming around and people smoking cigarettes - in the presence of kids no less. Cigarette butts were sitting on a few of the tables, too.
Ordered two fried chicken sandwiches, a double burger, two black teas, one hibiscus tea, and a bowl of curly fries. Our total came out to $60 with 15% tip. The place was cuter than the food. Service was fine. The menu online included brunch and breakfast but the restaurant had a very limited menu. I wouldn't go back.
Went here for the first time and the experience was a total joke. Ordered a happy hour draft cocktail that was in a tiny whiskey glass over half filled with ice for $10. Wanted to confirm with the bartender the happy hour price and he made some snide remarks about ‘welcome to Austin.’ For someone who has lived in NY in Chicago and has had much better, cheaper happy hour cocktails since living in Austin it was super bizarre and unfortunate
We got the black bean hummus to start. The pita and dip were good. But the vegetables were in a sorry state. The carrots and peppers were dry as if they'd been cut that the morning. The cucumbers had a thick inedible peel and some pieces were soggy and smelly. We noped out of the place. Never again.
We attempted to dine in but were turned away due to bringing food for our kids to eat. We checked out the menu before hand and noticed there are ZERO OPTIONS for children therefore we decided to buy something else for them to try. We couldn't even finish sitting down before we were rudely turned away by one of the staff. We didn't get to try the food and ofc don't even want to after this experience. Do better and at the very least add a kids menu
I’m disappointed by the way I was treated here. The bartender was highly unprofessional and frankly, downright mean to everyone I saw her interact with. I have always enjoyed my time here until my most recent experience. The disturbing behavior of this bartender, not only toward me but toward everyone else that was misfortunate enough to experience her, has dampened my entire experience of kinda tropical.
Some lady who worked at the front bar, she looked older and not as presentable like the rest of the staff, was unnecessarily rude for no reason when I asked her a question about side street parking. Cool if she didn’t know much about the parking, but there was no need for her to sound as ugly as she appeared. Her delivery and how she spoke was snappy for no reason. I just walked in! She could’ve had a better way of saying it, and that would’ve been a game changer. I’ll make sure to tell many ppl I know not to go here.
I was pretty disappointed during my dinner visit today. I absolutely love Kinda Tropical — the food is always amazing and the atmosphere is one of my favorites, which is why this experience stood out. While waiting in line to order, the employee taking orders saw me and then greeted a friend who walked in. That was totally fine, but I ended up standing there for a while while they continued chatting, even after making eye contact with me and clearly knowing I was next. I had my dog with me who was excited and impatient, but I continued to wait. I considered walking out but was very hungry, so I waited until another employee became available to take my order. This was my first time experiencing poor service here, and I hope it was just an off moment, because I truly enjoy this place otherwise.
The espresso martinis were terrible but I also overheard the bartender talking about how he made them with tequila on purpose to make it taste weird. I ordered a wine to be safe and for some reason it tasted bad and there was an onion in it. Idk how. I don’t know what I did to get on the bartender’s bad side but I was incredibly disappointed by the treatment I got. I’m pretty sure I ended up paying for the bad martini too. For management, I was there at night on 11/22. Idk the bartender’s name but he had a mustache and long dirty blonde hair. The bad drinks really ruined my experience.
My friends and I came here and the two of us who ordered first paid in cash. The lady with a bun who took our order said “we’ve got a bunch of no-tippers over here” while my friend was looking for cash in her wallet for the tip jar. She ordered one $5 taco, by the way. There were five of us wanting to order so my friend and I stepped aside to allow others to order since there was a tip jar on the counter. I thought this was very unprofessional, especially since we are students and my friend was looking for cash. Also, when I got my salad, there was a clump of hair on the lettuce. This experience made me not want to come back.
