Unbelievable. I was really regretting being dragged at this place by a friend. You can tell by driving by. It's a step above 7-Eleven food. And then you walk up and then nice staff member in her Modelo hoodie. Greets you and smiles and treats you like you've been coming there for years. You get your little vibrating food alerter , how modern considering how old the place looks. And as you look around, you realize it's not dirty at all. It's actually quite well kept and there's tons of patio seating and twinkly lights overhead and happy faces all around. And you chat for a bit and then the food comes and it's way better than you expected. By 10 times. I got a hot dog with everything on it. It was absolutely delicious with a toasted bun. And the cheese fries I ordered were just enough and the cheese was a little spicy. I loved it. I've lived in this neighborhood for 15 years and underestimated this place far too long. I 100% recommend coming to this place. It's cheap prices and they've been in business forever. Obviously they're doing something right. I am very excited to go back, especially after how wrong I was by my drive by judgment.
Fries, hot dogs, burgers, and shakes! Really high quantity in all aspects. Shakes were on point too. Corn hole and other games on the side. Great outdoor and indoor seating. A classic updated to a modern burger joint without loosing it soul.
Best late night spot for burgers and hot dogs in the area! Always friendly service and tables available. There’s so parking lot so plan accordingly.
We love this place! The employees are friendly and considerate. The food comes quickly, in nice durable containers so that your food does not leak on the carseat. They always think to put napkins, cutlery and straws in the bag. I love the round buzzing disc system that lets you know your order is ready. Last but not least: the food is excellent. Beautiful char on the burgers, thick fries that are salted just right, and creamy shakes. The price is well worth the product.
By far the best burger joint in the Bay Area! From the burgers, fish & chips, chili fries, cheese fries, chili dog and especially the milkshake, this place is a gem! Great service and lots of seating in the heart of Berkeley. It's packed throughout the day with great vibes, I would recommend this restaurant to everyone. 5/5
Had a great experience at the Smokehouse! We ordered cheeseburgers, fries, and a strawberry milkshake—and everything was absolutely delicious. The cheeseburgers were hot, juicy, and cooked to perfection over an open fire stove, which gave them that amazing smoky flavor. The fries were crispy and golden, and the milkshake was creamy and refreshing. Best of all, the service was impressively fast. Highly recommend if you’re craving a solid, satisfying meal.
A true staple of old Berkeley! The Smokehouse has been a local favorite since 1951 and its delicious food still hold that to be true! Thankfully we were able to get there before the rush and find a table! The shakes are so good, with free mix ins and you can even get a dairy alternative with oat milk! The burgers are perfectly cooked and dressed with the bun being the perfect amount of crunch and softness to make every bite heavenly! The pieces are super fair too! Spent less than $10 per person.
It’s rare to find a burger under $10 in the Bay, but a DOUBLE CHEESEBURGER under $10? That alone warrants this classic Berkeley joint a standing ovation. The burger was excellent, and I would have been okay paying double the price for it — patty made-to-order with fresh pickles, shredded lettuce, and crisp tomato. They go heavy on the mustard which I welcomed (but yellow sauce haters be wary). The giant soda machines in the back were a welcome respite from the Diet-Coke-only fast food restaurants everywhere (why does no one seem to stock Coke Zero?!) and the back opens up to ample indoor and outdoor seating. The only downsides were the fries — they were just okay — and the wait time was longer than I expected. Though, I suppose waiting awhile is the price we pay for a fresh, cheap burger, and I’d gladly pay the cost again. This place is undoubtedly a CLASSIC Berkeley spot and one of the few places a family could feed everyone without breaking the bank. Perhaps that’s why it’s been an East Bay staple for over 70 years — I’d highly recommend taking the extra 15 minutes to opt for Smokehouse over a trip to Jack-in-the-Box or McDonalds.
Love the food here! Always down for a burger and some fries. They also have delicious fish sandwiches, dairy free milkshakes and cheese fries. Great, friendly customer service. You can even dine out back, lots of benches and tables to hang out with friends or on a date. Parking is pretty easy to find. Highly recommend The Smokehouse, a local gem!

Solid burgers! The burger off the BBQ grill ... so great. It was a longish wait for our takeout order but worth the wait. It was a real treat to get chili on my burger. Thumbs up!
Tasty hot dog, tasty shake, 1950's ambience, just what I needed. The burgers looked great but I can get those everywhere.

With shrinking portions, rising prices, and a changing demographic, one that includes vegan options, oat milk, and taro root gluten substitutes, this place still holds some loyalist fascination for me, as a place where I would get a burger anytime I happened upon a few bucks in the 1970s. The Smokey char flavor is definitely the appeal here, and on a 1 to 10 I'd rate the burger a solid 6, (they simply cannot, and will not, ever hold a candle to Big Al's on San Pablo across from Albany bowl, currently The most consistent, and high quality hamburger in the East Bay hands down). The outdoor seating is nice especially in the evenings, and I'll give any newcomers a couple of solid tips. 1: if you're eating in the outdoor area anytime after 6:00 or when it's slightly cooler, your food, particularly your fries, will get cold faster than a bad date. 2: several of the tables in the outdoor area are slightly angled and have plastic tops, which when you place the plastic milkshake containers on them, might give you the impression that there are poltergeist or evil spirits moving your drink around! There are not. It's simple physics. Two slippery plastics make for one moving drink. You have been warned. 3: on the weekends, and after work, this place can become a rambunctious, zany, loud, explosive corral of toddler rugrats making more noise than a Republican who just got voted out of office. Pick your slot carefully. 4: if you can, we'll leave the oat milk, and taro root gluten substitutes alone. They are disgusting and will ruin all your positive memories, and they will also remove any good flavor memories that are on your hard drive, so that you never taste anything good again. They're disgusting. I'm currently appealing to the attorney general of California to strictly control, and punish the supply of gluten substitutes and oat milks. So far I haven't heard back from them. All in all, though it's a really solid burger experience, if you eat your food within 5 to 10 minutes of getting it, and when you want to sit outdoors, it's still a nice spot. The people are super cool, and the cooks are super hard working, and I have a lot of respect for them. That is my review. Mr 27 million views
The hot dogs are ok, but the burgers are where I'd focus my food order. Additionally, the non-dairy shakes are fantastic. Fries are terrific, crispy outside, fluffy interior. They use a premium onion ring, which was perfectly fried, but unseasoned. So close to perfect!
The five of us went on a Friday night and had a good time sitting outside with the burgers. Most of my family liked their hamburgers. My fish fillet was ok, nothing to rave about. French fries were decent. Prices were good.
Apparently went there while blacking out after losing two teeth somehow. Woke up with this photo geotagged here. Returned to 1) retrace my steps, 2) confirm that the bathroom graffiti is indeed this good, and 3) see how delicious the burgers are when sober. (They’re delicious!) PS- if you suspect that you were involved in or witnessed the incident described above, please reach out to.
I’ve been going to the smokehouse for decades, and it’s mostly the same as it was way back when. They don’t have the orange Julius anymore, which was great, but the burgers and hotdogs are still excellent. They add chili and cheese for no charge, and caramelized onions as well. The service can be a little iffy, and it was cold out, bring a jacket. They only have outdoor seating and while it is covered, it is still often cold. Parking can be difficult since it is on the corner of a busy street on a residential neighborhood. It’s also open late, when there is not much to choose from.
Food is good, wish that the cheese would melt more on the burgers though. Even if you order a small bag of fries, you’re still going to get a lot! I would recommend ordering and eating in person even though there might be of a wait rather than ordering online. They messed up my order and wouldn’t refund me since it was through a “third party.” I directly ordered from THEIR website but somehow I wouldn’t get my money back.
Very okay food in a nice setting. Bun was better than fast food but could be more billowy or chewy. Patties were a bit overdone. Seasoning and sauce was lacking. Lettuce was not crisp or fresh. Fries were solid but I prefer a heavier fry on them. Didn’t try it today, but cool to see they have vegan shakes! Cute spot with partial indoor and outdoor tables by a sizable lawn. Awesome place to stop by and grab quick bite and hang for a bit. This is my first time here. I’ve heard prices have gone up but it’s still much more affordable than what you get at full-service restaurants.

Edited review, was 5/5; check bottom for update Food is great. Nothing fancy, but if you're in the mood for a good burger and chili cheese fries then this joint hits the spot. Pretty cheap too, considering how much nearby places cost. Service isn't special but it gets the job done; you get the impression they just care about serving customers good food. The atmosphere is so-so. They're definitely going after the young person/young family vibe, aka some sports in the background with wooden tables and chairs outside and inside the restaurant. It doesn't stand out to me but I don't really care about that stuff very much anyways. Still a 5/5 for me. Here's a pic I took of my food; see how glorious it is? Update: I came back a few weeks later and some of the staff seemed to have changed. No worries. Took a minute or so for someone to attend to me. It was raining when I went in so I took a seat inside to wait for my meal. As soon as I take a few steps in my nose is assaulted with the smell of urine. Very gross, that wasn't there before. Maybe they're super busy. I wait for my meal, takes a bit longer than usual (~15m). I get the grilled chicken burger meal and it has a ton of lettuce on it... even though I asked for the opposite, no lettuce. What? I take it up to get remade and the staff is a bit confused; broken English so it seems it wasn't their first language, even still I'd think "no lettuce" would be clear at least. They remake it and I get it back after a minute or so of waiting, annoyed now but whatever. The chicken was overcooked. Not burnt, there's that at least, but cooked long enough that it's hard to rip apart the grilled chicken. Maybe it's not supposed to come with cheese but the last time I went I got cheese on it. The pee smell was overpowering enough though that I decided to just scarf down the meal and go on my way. ~30 minutes later since I walked in and it's still there...families out and about in the restaurant as well. If I had to guess it seems like their staff from before quit or got laid off, maybe switched shifts because food and service sucked. Pretty disappointed.

The double cheeseburger was laughably small. The patties, not the buns. The patties were completely overcooked and dry. I wonder if I just got a bad batch.Because mine looked nothing like any of the pictures that other people have posted. Also, it didn't come with lettuce, tomato or anything.
When you drive by this lace you see a lot of customers so you think food might be good, but boy wasI wrong! The burgers are tiny and they taste disgusting. Ordered onion rings, they were cold and refried., the milk shake was pure sugar, no taste. All those people have no idea what's good burger tastes like. If I could post review and give give it ZERO STARS I would! Would never come back here again!!!
Driest meet I’ve ever had in my life. So bad I had to stop eating and take a picture of the burger. So dry, not juicy at all. I can tell that they made the patty, just left it there for hours and then served it to me. Absolutely not fresh at all. Gave me a horrid stomach ache after. So sad, it takes one bad batch to ruin it for so many people. I’ll make sure the word spreads and people don’t come have a bone dry burger. Just look at the picture I posted and see how dry and discolored the meat looks. Fries were also soggy for some odd reason. Quality control does not exist here.
