Southie has the coziest local vibe—walking in feels like stepping up to your own kitchen counter. Super casual, we seated ourselves and soaked in the relaxed atmosphere. The menu is minimal, but don’t let that fool you. Everything on it is absolutely stellar. I ordered the poached eggs with bacon over a salad, and my husband went for the breakfast burrito. We consider ourselves breakfast burrito connoisseurs, and this one ranks among the best we’ve had. It skips the potatoes, which some will appreciate (though I do love a good California burrito loaded with fries). We shared bites of each other’s dishes and both were delicious. The vibe here is totally unpretentious, but the food tells a different story—it’s crafted with real care. And just like being at home, they had wine on tap, so I strolled over to the counter and treated myself to a glass. Highly recommend. Whether it’s a casual workday stop or a lazy weekend morning, I’d happily come back.
I honestly forgot how good this spot is for dinner. Known more for their sandwiches for lunch. Next to their big brother Wood Tavern, this a more causal dining experience. Quality is just as good. We got the tuna salsa, a pasta dish and sea bass entree. Everything was exceptional. Service and wine were as great.
its a really nice little place in a cool area. we got 4 things. 1) Breakfast burrito 2) Chicken sandwich 3) Bacon Sandwich 4) meatball sub Get the meatballs if you go here. They were the best thing we got, and it wasn't even close. The burrito and potatoes were under seasoned, but they have salt on the table so you can adjust it yourself. Both sandwiches were pretty good. The staff was great, parking is pretty easy which was a surprise.
Great food and friendly service make this our go to for Sunday brunch! Javi crushes the whole delicious menu. It’s so hard to choose. Best hash in town. Breakfast burrito is hard to beat. Sweet corn and chile oil soup was outstanding last week. I’ve been getting the shrimp poboy of late but If his enchiladas are on the menu, grab’em!
Wow! I went in with high expectations after reading a few reviews and I was not disappointed. I went in specifically for the breakfast burrito and I was extra hungry. My first bite of burrito was all tortilla and for a split second I though “oh no”. But my next bite was like an explosion of savory delish. Most of the breakfast burritos I have had are a little on the plain side when it comes to flavor, but this burrito was like 💥💥💥. The pasilla peppers give it a nice heat and the sausage is delicious. Add the creamy avocado and egg and my mouth is watering just thinking about it! Go try it. You might see me there waiting for a breakfast burrito. Or maybe I will try the rest of their menu. The staff is friendly and the establishment is clean and colorful. Due to it’s location on College Ave. parking can be difficult to find, but it is definitely worth it.
Where should I start!!! From now on Southie will be my to-go place for breakfast… 1) Super reasonable price for exquisite food 👍 2) Their homemade pear jelly will blown away your palate 🤤 3) I loved the experience of sitting on the bar and watch the chef cooking all different plates. He is super talented!
We have been coming here a number of years. It’s been our fall back option when the bar is full next door at the Wood Tavern (same ownership). It is best described as upscale fast casual dining in a small intimate space where the noise level can be elevated at times. Menu changes frequently and is inventive. A bright spot in Rockridge for dining.
Located in Rockridge/North Oakland📍, this neighborhood gem 💎 won't disappoint. It is also the little sister of Wood Tavern, which is located next door. Before we get to the menu and the food, I need to mention how stylish this place is. Great spot for a mid-day lunch by yourself, with a date, or for a quick business meeting with a nice selection of beers on tap 🍺🍺 + a couple of wine options🍷🍷. You can sit at the bar, which gives you a high end diner "experience" w/o the price, the wall area is perfect for a solo lunch, or at the bar to ceiling window which opens directly to the street. Sitting at the bar watching the orders being cooked reminded me of #WaffleHouse (those who know about WF will understand this next point), if WF had an A rating and ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ a high casual vibe, Southie would be it. Now to the food. You can rework anything on the menu to make it into your own remix or even make any of the sandwiches into salads. Either way if it's on the menu they'll make it your way. We got the Turkey panini and the fried chicken + romaine salad. Wow and and amazing can't even capture how good the food is here. The salad I got wasn't the salad I had pictured in my mind (pre-order), but I was more than satisfied with the flavor of the salad that arrived. The fried chicken was amazing, almost reminded me of catfish nuggets. The turkey panini was really good and comes on Acme bread, which I here is another Oakland must-have. Overall would highly recommend checking this place out. You won't be disappointed.
Coffee: I stopped by for a relaxing morning coffee in an uncrowded store, drinking from a real cup Very civilised and preferable to sitting out on the street.
Always had a great meal here. Visited there three times and enjoyed every moment.
Delicious sandwiches made with fresh ingredients! Enjoyed the grilled asparagus & burrata as well as the meatball sandwich. The bread was fantastic!
Epitome of small restaurant excellence. We had the B.L.A.T. and steak and taleggio. Both were delicious. We're now going to make Southie our new first meal when visiting Oakland
The mussels and fried chicken were delicious! Wine selection is amazing. Cute date spot!
If you're a breakfast burrito fan, Southie serves one of the best I've ever had—anywhere. I've eaten great burritos across the Bay and in L.A., and this one easily ranks at the top. It's perfectly constructed: ripe avocado, fluffy scrambled eggs, cheese, chorizo, and an onion-pasilla pepper relish, all wrapped in a warm, soft tortilla. The flavors are bold and balanced, and it’s finished with a smoky chipotle aioli that adds just the right amount of kick. One of the things I love most is that it doesn’t include potatoes—just pure flavor, no filler. I keep coming back for this burrito, and it never misses. If you're anywhere near College Ave, it’s more than worth the stop.
Part of the Wood Tavern family. If the wait is too long at wood tavern - don't skip out on southie. They might be known for their lunch sandwiches but they make a mean dinner too. Some of my go-tos in every season: mussels (you get a huge portion!), bacon/egg/frisbee salad, breakfast burrito (to die for), all the various crostinis, balls/polenta, Sunday brunch menu (everything on there). They have the warmest front of house (shout-out to Leo) and the most efficient kitchen staff - you'll see how well they operate when you are there, it's an open kitchen. Space is more condusive to smaller parties - so grab a best friend and go.
Solid spot. Meatball sub was good, but should come with warning as to how hot it is. Burned the top of my mouth.
The food was pretty tasty (Meatball sandwich and Ahi Tuna Sandwich). About $25 for two people to eat, before tax and tip. Fair price overall. The venue is pretty small, so don't be surprised if there's no space. Nothing special about the service (nothing good or bad in particular).
It's a casual small local cafe with limited seating around the cafe and bar. Has good sandwiches but breakfast items are very limited despite it's brunch vibe! This is just based on our experience: Cafe latte was cold, we literally saw when made and took like 5 min to pick up and deliver. This just made the service very slow. Chau's are very uncomfortable more of high bar stool type to just accommodate small area and perhaps made customers leave ASAP! Again, fair under more of a bar type cafe! Food was just OK nothing to highlight but sandwiches looked delicious. Not sure if try this place again though. No kids friendly.
We usually love Southie but the last few times we've picked up our order the main hostess has been especially rude as soon as we walk in the door. On a street busy with restaurants, we will be taking our business elsewhere.
Terrible breakfast burritos where they cheat you on eggs, chorizo, but which contain so many poblano peppers and onions that they take over the flavor profile of the burrito. So wet from the veggies that there was a pool of liquid by the time I finished the burrito at the bottom of my plate. The burrito could be so much better, but they quite literally, water it down. Very nice gentleman at the counter. I'm surprised you guys are recommended so favorably on the internet for your burritos.
