Just about thought I was in Nashville. I love Skinny Dennis. It’s an authentic Honky Tonk. I don’t drink, however they were really accommodating and were happy to serve me Seltzer. Great spot for country music fans in the city.
This place is the best bar / live music spot in NYC. If you're here on a live music night, you're never going to leave. Drink their milkshakey smoothie type drink and your night will be amazing. The crowd is always fantastic. Not your normal NYC crowd and most the people here are not from Manhattan (except for the truly cultured ones). People are from deep BK, the south, or visiting from other countries.Truly a total melting pot of people. Vibe is awesome. People are friendly. There's space, but not too much so it still feels cozy. TIP THE BANDS!!!
If you’re itching for a bit of Nashville in New York City, strut on over to Skinny Dennis in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This honky-tonk haven serves up a heady brew of live country tunes, potent whiskey, and the much-ballyhooed Willie's Frozen Coffee that’ll have you yeehaw-ing with joy. Open since 2013, Skinny Dennis has perfected the art of laid-back charm with its divey decor and a friendly crowd that’s as diverse as the borough itself. With 18 beers on tap and a vibe that’s both welcoming and wonderfully unpretentious, it’s the go-to joint for a night of unfettered fun and foot-tapping frolics. Whether you’re a country soul or just in search of a cool drink on a hot night, Skinny Dennis promises a rollicking good time.
Skinny Dennis is a great spot. They have a good range of drink options from cheap deals to some half decent cocktails. My favorite thing to get here is the frozen bourbon coffee. It's like a coffee slushi with a good a decent amount of bourbon in the mix but nothing overpowering. It's nothing special but I appreciate it because it's very good and something that you can't get at every bar you go to in the city. In addition, they've constantly got live music and one of the best things of all is the availability of free roasted peanuts at the bar. Gotta love free peanuts. Overall it's an interesting spot and worth the visit for the coffee drink alone.
A Texan myself, there couldn't be a better place to spend time with friends drinking beer and listening to great music. Music ranges from classic country to southern rock to pure banjo and harmonica. If you enter, you will move your body awkwardly to music you don't know how to dance to - and you will like it. Also the beer is like $3.
Went there on a beautiful Sunday for their live music, which was a great blue-grass band! Their drinks were so inexpensive I had to do a double-take! They also offered hot peanuts. I didn't get their special Willie's frozen coffee, but it seemed very popular! Highly recommend!
Skinny Dennis is a fantastic dive bar. They offer live music several times a week and they have free peanuts with shells they give to anyone who asks for them. The best part is that you can dump the shells on to the floor. After a long night it's covered with them. Besides that it's a regular dive bar with great beer/shot specials. The staff is great. Come check it out.
Been to this bar many times, bands can be hit or miss, but some talented musicians play here. Great for a southern transplant or anyone who likes a country-esque vibe in Brooklyn. It can get a little too crowded towards the weekend so maybe not your place if you prefer to avoid crowds. During the week it is totally fine though. Affordable beer (+Willy's frozen coffee) and authentic live music make this place a winner for me.
Skinny Dennis is a best in class dive bar with what most places lack : an authentic atmosphere. Well priced drinks and superb location. Came in on Monday to have a drink with some friends and it just felt great. Really appreciate this pillar in the neighborhood.
Cool little "Texas bar" in Brooklyn that has live country music. Great service from attentive bartenders. The coffee slushy is one of the best cocktails I've had. I would highly recommend. So delicious.
I don't even live in NY but this is my favourite bar, hands down. Willie's frozen coffee is really good, but I don't like bourbon so I usually don't get it. The beers and cocktails are well priced and in the winter they have warm cocktails such as Irish coffee and adult hot chocolate, both of which are good. Sometimes they have live music on the weekends, which is cool, but it'll get crowded. Either way, never a disappointing experience.
I love Skinny Dennis. Friendly Staff, great music and great atmosphere. The coffee thing is delicious! Gets really busy at weekends. And some nights they have live band! Amazing!
Cheap dive bar with a great selection of beer and other fun drinks ($5 for a 24oz Narragansett and seasonal staples like Pumpkin brews and Oktoberfest, too). The frozen coffee slushie was especially satisfying, as well. A much more down-to-earth option down than most will find in the area. I will absolutely be making this place part of my itinerary anytime I'm in Williamsburg!
Popped by here per the recommendation from the bartender at the sister bar Rocka Rolla and man it did not disappoint. Great atmosphere, great drinks, and great company. The bartender Brittany made us feel like we had been regulars for years. Any time we are in the area we will make it a point to come back.
Most fun I've had with my pants on. Great band. Cool old school 70's dive bar atmosphere. Place was packed and the bar staff was on their game. No waiting. Other establishments take note.
If you're looking for a dive bar then this is your spot. Good cheap drinks and beers - Lone Star my personal favorite cheap beer. Late-night live music. Does get crowded on weekend nights but is a great spot to have a good time with friends if there is room. If you're looking for a casual drink alone or for a romantic date I would avoid this spot unless you date is cool AF, and if that is the case then you should lock them down ASAP and have you reception here.
Saturday afternoon, big crowd of people having fun, lots of folks in and out so the crowd changes, top notch band of local musicians playing rock and blues covers that most of the crowd can sing along with, modestly priced alcohol, very "old school dive bar" feel in a gentrifying neighborhood. Loved the art on the walls, paint by numbers Willie Nelson on black velvet, "outsider art" painting of Graham Parsons, just nothing bad to say about this place.
The live music was great and the crowd was such an interesting mix. I don’t go out to Brooklyn too often but would love to go back soon. If you live / are staying in the area, definitely worth going to for a night.
Being the 1000 review, I better make it good. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A True Time Machine Honky-Tonk Experience Walking into this dive bar feels like stepping straight into the late ’80s or early ‘90s — and I mean that in the best possible way. It’s not trying to be nostalgic; it is nostalgic. From the worn leather stools to the soft neon glow bouncing off antique beer signs, everything here tells a story. The jukebox is pure gold — loaded with classic country tracks that’ll have you toe-tapping from the moment you walk in. Think George Strait, Reba, Randy Travis, maybe a little Garth for good measure. And if you’re lucky, someone will pick just the right song that turns the whole bar into a singalong. There’s a shuffleboard table that’s seen some serious history — a little crooked in just the right places, and surrounded by good-natured trash talk and laughter. It’s the kind of place where strangers become drinking buddies over one game. Drinks are cheap, cold, and poured with a heavy hand. No frills, just the way a good dive should be. The bartenders are friendly but no-nonsense — they’ve seen it all and still manage to serve it with a wink and a smile. If you’re looking for a polished, Instagrammable night out, this isn’t it. But if you’re after a genuine, boots-on-the-floor, beer-in-hand country night that feels like it’s been preserved in time — this bar is your new favorite haunt. I’ll be back there tonight!
Skinny Dennis is the perfect spot for hanging out with friends! We went early on a Saturday afternoon, and when we arrived, it was empty, but by the time we left, it was jam-packed. The laid-back vibe and good music sets the tone for a great time, and Willie's Frozen Coffee is an absolute must-try—it's worth the visit on its own. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in the area.
Good place, Concerts happens several times a week I’ve been there a Monday night, a very cool country band was performing !
This was my first time at Skinny Dennis and let me just say, it was amazing. The tenders were so funny, welcoming and charismatic. The drinks are reasonably priced and they do the job. Trust me. I recommend the Bourbon Mint Sweet Tea. The atmosphere is not something you could replicate. Perfect vibes to come alone and enjoy the ambiance or come with a friend or group and enjoy the live music they host and have fun.
I love this place specifically in two occasions: in the early evening, before it gets packed —the vibe is great, the beer is affordable, and the table and bar next to the window are cozy and nice. Also on Friday nights when the house band is playing —even if the crowd is a bit too much, the music is amazing and it's a guaranteed fun time.
Get a frozen coffee, it’s similar to the 1970’s cocktail, mudslide, but better. Warning though too many will put you on an express train to a blackout. 🚂🍹Skinny Dennis is a what a dive bar should be it’s lots of fun and the music is great. It gets really busy through the evening. There’s a shrine to Willie Nelson.
Saved our New York experience. After a rough night in a bad hotel, we rolled into skinny d and found our time out. Best bar I’ve been to in the area if you’re looking for a bit of a dive but with that country oriented playlist that makes it feel so down-homely. 100% will return next opportunity.
Great local spot for a weekly beer with your neighbor. Texas vibe. Bands regularly play country music (check schedule on the facebook page of the bar). Free peanuts (just like at Five Guys!). There is a juke box with good old vinyls (Fleetwood Mac, Johnny Cash…). Try the local frozen coffee for a buzz. It gets VERY packed on the weekend, and very noisy.
Amazing place. I just adore it. We went to NY February 2019, just before everything went to hell. We had a great time, staying here all evening. If I ever go back to NY, this is a must to visit place. People here are so friendly and fun, the bartender is super nice and the enviroment takes me back to the ´90s!
A truly great, chill spot for some solid drinks and vibes! Just what we were looking for after having an expensive dinner nearby - a lowkey and chill dive bar with amazing aesthetics and a fun atmosphere! There's plenty of seating, and it feels very warm and cozy within. Ordering at the bar took a little while, but the bartender was very friendly and once I had the drinks, it was a great space to relax within. We had some of the ciders, which were a great flavor and taste. I also loved the decor behind the bar and also throughout the building. There's a yellow, comforting warmth throughout the space, something that I loved on a cold winter evening. If you want a chill space with excellent vibes and a warm atmosphere, Skinny Dennis is definitely the spot for you. I think they also have live music frequently - no one was performing while we were there, although I did notice someone beginning to set-up just as we were heading out. I highly recommend!
This is not a restaurant. It's a great dive bar where they play excellent country music. Always people dancing. Great bartenders. Highly recommend
This is one of my favorite Bar in Brooklyn / Williamsburg. I love to get there on Saturday afternoon, they have always a nice live session. Although you are not in Texas or Nashville, you can have a nice Honky Tonk in New York City. Good beers, friendly staff, nice vibes, good Music!
When I saw Michelle at the bar, I immediately felt at home. Not only has she never met a stranger, but I told her if she didn’t officiate my wedding- I’d end it. She accommodated on a dime, and by god my first child- daughter or son- MICHELLE. Go here if you’d like to transcend into eternity. Thank you Michelle.
Well this is a Williamsburg area surprise. I'll call it the country bar in Brooklyn. A great relaxed vibe during the day and a festive vibe at night often with live music. Great spot to hang and recalibrate that city intensity and grab a beer and warm peanuts. Pricing was average and service was great. Inside and outside seating available with a fun southwestern interior. Get on over there and give em a yeehaw.
Great country bar with amazing atmosphere and ambience. Staff were great and very helpful, loved the drink recommendations too! Highly recommend the bourbon and sweet tea! A must! The live music was great too, maybe just a bit loud... Still I would recommend for a good drink and to relax or be with friends.
I can tell I would love this place if I were there on a slow night, however I went at about 8pm on a Saturday and it was so incredibly packed my group and I could barely get to the other side of the room. Maybe I'm just too old for it, but when a place is that crowded it kills any chance of me having a good time. I came for the live music and could barely hear it. NYC needs more country bars, clearly!
There is good love music almost every night and they have a good selection of beers, their prices are fair. The bartender thinks she needs to have an attitude, which is unnecessary. But overall it's a very nice bar.
Considering how weird it is to be outside during winter, its pleasantly nice. The bartender is sweet. They generally have a tent for customers to keep warm in. Two actually. Excited about in door dining at 25%
Great country bar. Very good music. Its the real deal being here. Waylon and Willie would happy.
Came twice in the past few weeks. First time, came on a Saturday during the day and ordered a coffee drink with my friend and drank it with a friend in their outdoor seating. Coffee drink is yummy and a great deal (it's a frozen coffee slushy with bourbon). Second time, came on Saturday night and it was POPPIN but I'm not really into country so the live music (which of course is on brand for them) is not my jam so I chugged 2 coffee drinks and hopped over to another bar
So it is what it is. A small dive bar. To be fair, there's enough seating around the edges that you could still probably grab a seat if you needed to. There was room for a live band in a packed house on a Friday night. Packed but not uncomfortably so. Decent choices in the beers, so if the location works for you then here's your spot.
Amazing place. Omg I love the bartenders and how well they take of you. I asked them to hold my drink and they kept it in the back for up to 10 mins while I was busy. The female bartender (I don’t know her name sorry) with mico bangs was the sweetest. So kind and attentive. The place was good, there were about 2 other bars close by and the band was great. Also lots of Native American decor, which I wasn’t expecting considering the targeted demographic but whatever ig🤷🏻♀️. However they have no patio so if you want a smoke break you gotta go out the front door, again not a big deal. Didn’t order food so idk about that
Love this place! So many wonderful memories here. Unfortunately, the owners seem to have gotten the memo that the place is a lot of fun and doubled the cover ($5 to $10) and raised drink prices. This is their right - and I hope much of that money trickles down to the staff and talent. But, part of the appeal of SD was its low cover and drink prices. I always felt like I was getting away with something when I went there. With the increase in price, it's just not the same - for me at least. So, I feel like the SD chapter of my NYC experience has come to an end. I hope others can enjoy it as much as I have.
Skinny Dennis is so fun! The country music on the jukebox is great. The employees were friendly. The other patrons were cool the be around. It’s a great place to sit and talk to catch up with friends. (I’ve heard SD gets really fun rowdy on the weekends but I was there on a Monday). The live band was great but was too loud. The space is small so with the band so loud it became impossible to have a real conversation.
Frozen coffee & bourbon mint sweet tea is the vibe here. Live music can get crazy loud sometimes in such a small space , but definitely grab a table when you can and settle in for a few rounds!
My recent visit to Skinny Dennis, located at the intersection of Metropolitan Avenue and Berry Street, was a memorable experience, capturing the essence of a quintessential underground bar. The ambiance of Skinny Dennis is intriguingly dark, creating an intimate and somewhat secretive atmosphere that sets it apart from your average bar. This shadowy setting contributes to its unique charm, making it a great spot for those who appreciate a more subdued and private environment for their evening outings. One of the convenient features of this bar is the availability of an ATM on-site. It's a thoughtful touch that adds to the ease of the experience, especially in a cash-preferred setting. The service at Skinny Dennis was notably good. The staff were attentive and friendly, ensuring that our needs were met promptly and with a smile. Their professionalism and warmth greatly enhanced our overall experience. Skinny Dennis strikes a balance between being a quiet spot to unwind and having a slightly messy, lived-in feel that adds character. This combination gives the bar a unique identity – it's neither too polished nor too rough around the edges, which I found particularly appealing. In conclusion, Skinny Dennis is a fantastic choice for those looking for a good underground bar with a dark, cozy ambiance and excellent service. It's a place that seems to capture the spirit of a hidden gem in the heart of the city.
Typical dive bar with country music. Good place to start your night and have a drink while listening to band. Cocktail drinks were below average and overpriced I would recommend sticking to beer.
I honestly wanted to love this place. Inside, everything was awesome — the bartender was super friendly, the drinks were amazing (highly recommend the frozen coffee one!), the band was great, and the vibe was really fun and lively. But the night started off on a really sour note because of the bouncer. Instead of being welcoming, he was rude and condescending. I misheard him, and instead of just clarifying, he decided to shame me and even tried to “teach me how to interact with people.” Not exactly the kind of greeting you want when you’re walking into a bar to have a good time. Thankfully, the bartender and band turned things around and kept the night from being completely ruined. But honestly, the first person you meet at the door shouldn’t make you feel unwelcome. If it weren’t for how great the staff inside were, I probably would’ve left right away.
Really bad policy at the door - they take cash but dont accept $100 dollar bills - so the only way to get into this place is to pay the cover w small bills!? 🤯
They have a jutebox but also a DJ who doesn’t take requests even if it’s old school country. So people pay on the jutebox and their songs never play.
It depends who the bartender is, they sometimes charge me $11 for Hendricks and tonic. Other times the guy charged me like $16 lol, and poured a weak drink. Long hair blonde, tattoos, I get it I don’t look like you and probably never been around people like me where you grew up. I like the levee more, I don’t feel like the people pouring the drinks judge you like they do here.
The snack was ok but the woman behind the bar was super annoyed about our order! She asked where we came from & when she heard that we spoke german she immediately cancelled us & questioned every oder… Never again. Sad that this is still a problem. But i understand that she might have had a bad day…
I don't recommend it! The staff are not friendly. A place to be avoided! They charge for toilets, even when you're a customer! Shocked
Bartenders were very rude. They would take forever to bring a beer, and then take it away before it was finished. I complained and they didn't apologize, they decided instead to ignore me and my companion. It was beyond rude. I was sober, those were my very first beers of that night. Very bad service for a bar with good music. Too bad. Never had that kind of experience in any other bar in NYC before. And now that I’ve read other people's reviews it seems that apparently there certainly is some issue with racism in here. Shame.
Beware. I used to go to this place 3x a week before the pandemic and then moved out of New York, it had really been the real deal. I came back this weekend and the first place I wanted to go was here. I've recently moved to WV, where the DMV has admitted their ID's don't always scan properly -- it's happened multiple times in-state, and security or police just say it's fine because of the known bug. I was blindsided when mine scanned as invalid and the bouncer confiscated the entirely legal ID; claimed to use a police ID scanner. A bartender outside told me there was no manager on duty and the bouncer could not be reasoned with, leaving me with a legal ID that had been stolen by said bouncer, leaving me effectively stranded in the city -- and even with the pledge that police could back me up, he kept my valid ID. The NYPD was able to get it back in under a minute as I proved via the multiple other identifications I had on my person that I am who I am -- and a quick scan of the actual police system the officer had on-hand proved it was not stolen and that the bouncers "police scanner" wasn't such. It is very unnerving and unprofessional that there was no manager to take charge of the situation, and that their employed bouncer would act as he did, and effectively steal a valid ID -- as I mentioned the DMV would back me up as to the issue they have been having with new-resident ID's. There was no apology or anything for something so serious. It is a sad thing I can never go there again, as no former regular should be victimized and treated so unethically. The hundreds of dollars I spent there over the years, and the dozens of times I went as a New York resident didn't help at all with what was a simple, known technological issue that turned into a nightmare ordeal. Management is free to reach out to discuss further as I am happy to offer a full accounting of what went on so that they may take corrective action.
Horrible Service! This is one of the worst bars I have been to in New York. The staff will come to your table if you don’t tip AT LEAST 20% for your drinks. For the record - you have to go inside the bar and get your own drinks. No table service. They come to your table and berate you for not tipping enough. The bartender with the facial hair and hat made us so uncomfortable after tipping $5 on a $30 bill that we left. We were having a great time at this place until then. Overly entitled bartenders - you’re a bartender not a stock trader. Please rethink this persons hire, they aren’t worth the money and are making you lose patrons. We were ready to recommend this place until then. Not the mention, they are not COVID compliant.
It seems like the bartenders pick and choose who they want to be nice to, clearly not to us. Full of creepy guys by the bar too. Cringe vibes, seems like a corporate cowboy themed party. It’s also a sauna inside.
Don’t get scammed on cover fees here. The nice bouncer guy agreed to let our group of 5 in for $40 and then the short hair brunette woman inside said it was $60 and wouldn’t take our cash because we tried to pay with $10 bills and didn’t have all $20 bills. Ruined my friends birthday so we had to go down the street to radegast
It s a shame. We paid a lot of beers and we were not able to go to the bathroom because of we don t know what… and they wanted to charge us 5 dollars ! Even for girls with periods. I don t recommand at all ! Again it s a shame for them.
Denied entry despite having an Australian license and 32yo. Security said I need an “ID” not sure what qualifies?
Not sure when this became a cover charge place but it has lost its way. What a shame
Nice place, I went there around a month ago, but the staff’s behavior, specifically the bouncer, was so unprofessional that I will never go back
The place wasn’t that bad and the live music was good. The reason I give one star is because of the behavior of the staff and specifically the security at the door. The bouncer was very rude and after I went out for a phone call he asked me to pay a cover charge again. Apparently he forgot to check my ID when I entered the first time and he couldn’t find me in the list and I had to pay again due to his incompetence. And he was talking to me with the worst attitude. Never going back because I don’t want to be treated like a second class citizen by the security staff.
Home to the worst bartender in NY. You know the one: Long Hair, Thousand Yard Stare. My friends and I have been patrons of Skinny Dennis & Horses and Divorces for over 7 years, but that era must now come to an end because of this miserable miserable man. Here’s a quick laundry list of his infractions over the years: - charged me for drinks I never ordered - overcharged me for drinks I did order - smoked a cigarette outside H&D at peak hour for a good ten minutes, leaving the bar un attended as dozens of patrons waited to be served - typed away on his phone for 3 minutes as I stood there waiting for a drink Each time I go, I give this man a clean slate and he continues to impress me at how terrible and hostile he is at his job. I see him bark at other unsuspecting customers every time I’m here. I feel like he needs a hug. Here’s the thing. I love this bar when anyone besides him is working. The rest of the crew are stellar, so if you guys could just tell me which days this zombie works, I’ll remain a patron and show up the other days
