This place has undergone a major overhaul from when it used to be Genghis Khan many years ago. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and the food is incredible. I'm so impressed with how many different selections are on the menu. I've always come for the sushi but I've seen other people with regular entrees and they look so good. Top three favorites: Volcano Lobster Roll (one of the specials), Flaming Scallops and Salt and Pepper Mushrooms.
Best Sushi Period! Have been going over 13 years now and it's still the best! My family from San Diego to Seattle insist we go when they come to town. Chu's the man!!!
I've been here a couple of times now with my family and love it every time. Absolutely wonderful food and super awesome staff. The fish is fresh and delicious. The presentation of food is beautiful and unique. I love it and highly recommend this place.
This place was one of those unexpected hidden Jewel's. The service was second to none, very friend staff and the food is so fantastic!!! Family friendly, or a great place for a very impressive lunch date or business meeting over an impressive lunch. This is a MUST stop on your hidden places to impress a client, or dinner date...
The service, the atmosphere & the food are all great. Peking Ribs are always a great choice. They're always busy so it's loud but you can still hear the people at your table.
Castro Valley is small, and Genghix seriously dominates as the best restaurant my wife and I have been to in town. Their sushi is amazing and you really get a lot for your money. They have some of the larger rolls I have seen in the $8-14 price range (per roll) and the ingredients have always been fresh. When the place gets busy, you may have a wait and service may be a little slow, but I honestly never mind because the food is amazing and you will need some time to rest after stuffing your face with a whole lot of deliciousness!
I eat there mainly for the Sushi, service is great and Calvin, the Sushi Chef is the best. I am either eating Seared Albacore, 6 oysters and a Lion King Roll or Sushi. The wait staff is the best.
One of my favorite lunch spots. Love Love Love the Jalapeño Poppers and most of the Sushi rolls! Been eating here for at least 8 years and service along with quality of food has always been consistent, fresh, delicious, and pleasant.
great food at a ok price...if youre getting sushi then you obviously pay more but if you get chicken and other stuff you pay less, i love their lettuce cups and their oysters.
Our first time here today.. food was amazing. Service was exceptional.. interior of the restaurant is beautiful too.. it’s great if you looking to come for a date or any special occasion or even casual. It’s gonne be our fav restaurant from now on.
Drew welcomed us with a sincere smile, he was constantly checking on us: paid attention to every way he could make our first time visiting memorable. There are so many food choices we asked his recommendation and we loved all of them. Our favorite was the Thai rice with shrimp. My mom and I were impressed with the size and delicate flavor of the shrimp. She ordered salmon sashimi and as expected it was amazing. We will definitely return with our entire family next time. Thank you for a great lunch!
Tonight I had one of my favorites: salt and pepper scallop with green beans. Perfect balance of salt and spice. Wonderfully crunchy. Love the sushi rolls here, and it's a great menu for folks who have dairy or gluten issues.
Good food, very fresh. Combination of Chinese/Japanese/Thai menu with fresh Sushi bar. Big menu selection. Great gyoza. The spicy tuna roll was good, not too spicy, though. Thai Basil Chicken was great. I'd come here again to try the wide variety on the menu. Good prices.
I just discovered this amazing place and I am in love with it. The food is delicious and satisfying. The restaurant itself is amazing with lots of indoor and outdoor seating, a full cocktail bar, and a very large sushi bar. Please go check it out cuz it is cool and a great find in Castro valley, California.
One of the best sushi restaurants in Castro valley and the surrounding area. Very reasonable prices but get there early on a Friday or Sat night or you will be waiting for a table. It fills up quick. Try the Oh My God Roll or any of the specials on the wall.
Always come here for a birthday or holiday get-together. Food is great (we had tried almost everything on their menu). Servers and chef are friendly and attentive.
I absolutely love this sushi place. My favorite. I only go here.
I’ve had nothing, but pleasant experiences here at Genghix. I have been dining at this place for a long time, even before they were called Genghix! The wait staff are top notch, good quality food and a relaxed atmosphere. It’s a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for! The sushi is very fresh and I love that they have a good selection of vegan/vegetarian options. It’s a great place to go on special occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries. Give it a try if you like Asian food!
9 piece nigiri. Good quality Sushi, and just enough rice for the nigiri. Placed a pickup via DoorDash and my meal was on the counter when I arrived, not placed in refrigeration. This was not a big deal to me, but if you are running late, I would call the restaurant and ask for them to place your items in a cool place if it needs it. Update 10/11/21 Placed a Sushimi order for pickup earlier today, I was late this time again by 15min, however, this time my order was refrigerated the whole time. Thanks!
FABULOUS dinner!! Had the "Girlyman" & "Snow White" rolls as well as a beef teriyaki/tempura bento dinner & sashimi salad all shared with our group, plus gyoyza & edemame. Staff was attentive & very friendly. It was just super LOUD & hard to hear ourselves at our own table. But the food was AWESOME.
Went here for the first time with four other friends. This place completely knocks it out of the park with respect to food, service, atmosphere and price. I could go into a lengthy review however, everything that I would have to say would be positive. Would most certainly recommend and would highly like to return again sometime.
Went here four lunch with coworkers. This place has a bit of everything, a fusion for sure! Bento boxes range from 12 - 17 dollars and they include a soup ABC's salad which both were delicious. They also bring edamame for your table! Service was great and that make sure your water is filled. Would stop by once again.
Service from everyone was amazing and very attentive the entire time. My boyfriend and I ordered oysters (10/10 very fresh), spring rolls, 3 rolls (lion queen, spicy crab roll and 49ers), and miso soup. Everything was very very good, fresh and came out fast
great food with great people...yes when it gets busy the service drops but that comes with all restaurants, they also added an outdoor seating area which is nice during summer time.
This was my first time visiting this establishment. I had the chicken pho and the friend that was with me had the chicken and shrimp won ton soup. We had fresh spring rolls and spare ribs as appetizers. The food was hot, fresh, and a good proportion in comparison to the price. Service was excellent! I would recommend to anyone who appreciates Asian cuisine, or just delicious food in general. I will definitely be back!
Loved their house salad. We always make sure we order their house salad dressing to go everytime we come here. We also had their house fried rice which was really good too. And the soft shell crab and kung pao beef were also delicious. Oh, and their young coconut juice was great too.
First of all let me say I was hesitant to write this review as I want this place all to myself at any point that I want it.... But I must give credit where credit is due. My boyfriend and I came here tonight to have dinner and we were absolutely blown away. From first bite we were absolutely enamored. We only got 2 pictures since we went devoured most things as soon as they hit the table. The waitress recommended a special hand roll with tuna and fresh wasabi and oh boy. I saw God. It was the BEST thing I HAVE EVER TASTED! We got the jalapeno poppers, the Lion queen roll and the Phoenix roll and 2 more of the special hand rolls which were delivered by the chef himself! Everyone was so friendly and attentive and the sake was delicious! All different and all amazing in their own way! This will be our new favorite spot!
We stopped for lunch and had a wonderful experience. The service is exceptionally good, from the moment we walked in and throughout the lunch. They were present refilling our beverages and making sure we were OK. Our lunches were quickly served, fresh and delicious. Great experience altogether.
What a mouth explosion this was. Sushi was delicious. The decorated plate was named Four season and it was tasty, it had Crab, salmon, spicy tuna and eel. The long platter was eel, fried shrimp and avocado. The drink was a Coconut Mai Tia. Service was great and place is clean. 4 years ago Today 4/25/2023 Wow what a experience. Felt a bit rushed but was our fault for walking in right before the end of the lunch rush and prep time for the evening rush. Can't complain they where great at bringing out our food. Everything was good Pictures from 4 years ago to today are quite a change yet the food is good. Good has a good taste. My chicken was supose to be spicy but had no spice as I expected. But even then it had a good flavor.
Great neighborhood restaurant. This restaurant offers Asian Fusion so they have Japanese, Chinese and Thai dishes. Their food is very taste and fresh and the drinks are delicious as well. My favorites are the spinach garlic noodles, crispy salmon skin maki, Kumamoto oysters and ahi tuna tartare but everything is very tasty and staff is friendly as well. I would just love for the restaurant to be a bit brighter
Great place to eat if you like to eat "Asian Cuisines." Genghix serves generous portions of Chinese, Japanese (Bento, Sushi, and sashimi), Korean and Thai food. Menu is extensive; lots to choose from. There is also an extensive wine, beer, and cocktail menu too! Service is efficient. As of June 10, 2021, tables are social distanced (indoor dining only, no outdoor dining). Customers were wearing mask when not eating. Staff was wearing mask. There is a extensive weekday Chinese lunch plates and Japanese bento menu, which is reasonably priced for what you are served. A fresh green salad and a bowl of miso soup is served with the entree. Kid friendly: There are high chairs if needed. However, no diaper changing table in the women's restroom.
I've been here a few times and have never been disappointed. My favorite is the Go Go special roll. The coconut shrimp, Peking pork chops, and bento boxes are also great. Good prices by sushi standards, with large portions and a great variety. Nice atmosphere and the service is very fast and friendly.
Arrived with reservations on a Saturday night with a large group 10+. There is some parking in the strip mall but it does fill up so you may have to park farther away. The restaurant was fairly busy when we arrived around 7pm and definitely recommend making reservations. The offer a variety of Chinese and Japanese options and the cooked foods tend to be on a saltier side. The sushi was fairly fresh and tasty and the food overall came out quickly after ordering. The waitresses stopped by frequently to clear plates, refill water, and take new orders from our large group. The bathrooms are small but clean and I would say it's priced similar to what you find in the area which tends to be a little higher than other rural areas of the Bay Area. Might go back with a big group, not a fan of the saltier cooked dishes.
This my go to. For the most part their on point, however they're off every now and then forgetting to bring certain food. At times it has taken a long time to get my food. For instance, today I came to eat with a reservation for 11:30 at opening so there weren't many patrons and our food took relatively longer than expected. The food is delicious, I look the fusion, I highly recommend this establishment.
Genghix is a solid go to for me when I want good food, good/fast service and reasonable prices. My colleague and I usually share a roll, potstickers and an individual lunch special. 5 yrs in and I always leave looking forward to my next visit. Sushi fresh, service staff friendly and attentive, restrooms clean although paper products were running low on the day I went to visit.
This is a local establishment I frequently visit with my family when we want to go for sushi. Quality is good and service is nice. They recently, 6 months or so, added a bar towards the back of their hall, which is nice addition for people who wants to catch a game and have sushi / Chinese food. They do get packed so sometimes the service may suffer a little. Their price is on the high side.
A lot of the foods have been hit or miss for me and everyone I've gone with, but when it hits its amazing! I hate Peking sauce, but I get their Peking spare ribs every time I go because it's just that good. And I haven't seen salt and pepper mushrooms anywhere else yet. It's a good dish. Even with the misses I'll keep coming around. Because when the food is good, it's really good.
My little family of 4 has been going here for about 8-9 years. Lovely atmosphere. Friendly staff. The food is wonderful. I love the 49'er, Cherry Blossom, Ghenix Roll and assorted sashimi. They have a bar now too, so bottoms up🍻 Sake bombs are fun with your friends😜 We have never had a bad experience.
High quality food. We went for 3 different maki rolls (double Hamachi, double salmon, and "Oh yeah") and all were excellent. My favorite was Hamachi. Then we had also unagi donburi that was excellent and salt and pepper squid which was the least impressive part of the meal, but still good. Atmosphere of the restaurant is very pleasant. The only complaint was a distracted server and the suggested tip "game" on the bill: we split the bill 50-50 but the suggested tip on the both checks was calculated from the full amount. If you don't pay attention and simply check one of the options you end up double tipping...
First time ate there great food great experience..
We are sushi snobs and are addicted to Angry Fish, but Genghix was really tasty and enjoyable. The fusion really works. The sushi rolls were all full of flavor. Their warrior chicken was a delectable surprise. The shrimp tempura was crunchy and not greasy. We will be back for more of that chicken for sure!
We really liked this place. The food was very good and portions extremely generous. The menu has a very large selection, you may say too large. Some items weren't available though, they mentioned they were changing the menu 🤷 Service was very friendly but a bit slow, we around 30 minutes for our dinner. The place is nicely decorated and not too crowded but a bit loud. Prices were great, we paid around 20$ per person with tips
No matter what you're in the mood for, you'll probably find it on their menu. Service is always excellent. Food also excellent. Sometimes it can be pretty noisy with large parties are there. But that's the case with any good restaurant. You won't be disappointed. Their lunch specials are really great. Give it a try
Went for lunch and ordered off the lunch menu. Sweet and sour chicken. Now they served Vietnamese Pho another noodle dishes. The menu is big. They have a lot of sushi to choose from and full bar.
Solid spot for takeout- warriors chicken is pretty good. Like the chow fun, though wish the noodles were cut slightly wider. Honey walnut prawns are epic, super flavorful, huge, bouncy, tons of bite. fried rice is pretty great, some clumps of rice with no seasoning, rice tastes fresh which doesn't produce the best rice flavor/ texture for fried rice imo. Nice bar vibe. Friendly service. Usually a bit skeptical of fusion but what we tried was pretty solid. Food is not overly umami, missing the oomph that maybe msg would leave in it.
The food is not bad, the prices are alright. But I did find a piece of foil- from the scrubbers i believe it's from. inside my chicken teriyaki bowl of rice & broccoli.. (it was stuck on my broccoli) that wasn't a good thing to see. Glad I checked it before taking a Blinding bite.. 🙏 They just need to be a bit more careful next time. Dangerous!
Great place for sushi! One of my favorites. The fish is always fresh and tasty, rice well seasoned. They were pretty busy and forgot it off my order tonight, but fixed it fast. I sat at the sushi bar and it was fun to watch the chefs at work. The ratio of rice to fish is great! But I noticed one thing that bugged me a little... When a sushi item was done, one of the chefs would put the receipt paper printout onto the plate touching the food or sometimes right on top of a roll. Definitely made me glad they were just handing plates right to us. I didn't order that side of BPA. Otherwise, this place is great.
Place was close to empty upon arrival. We were far from the specials board so I asked if it was the same on the site. Waitress said yes and then upon ordering she said, Oh no, that's not the price. I reminded I asked her and she said oh no, thats different. What do you think I was asking you about then. Shouldn't have been any confusion since I showed her but obviously there was a misunderstanding which I don't know what she could have thought I was talking about. Food was ok to good. It was a bit pricey tho.
Update: lost a star from me because of service last time I was here (prepandemic). Placed an order to go while we were dining in a little over halfway through the meal. When I finished and paid the bill, my party and I waited for them to bring our to go order. And waited. And waited. They were busy so I didn't want to pester them, but I finally gave up after 15 min and asked about my order. Apparently it was left and the front counter and was just sitting there getting cold and the server wasn't apologetic. I do this quite often when my entire family can't go out and this has never happened anywhere else that I can remember. I've only been back once since, but this dropped off my list of regular choices in CV. For Castro Valley, this is a great option for sushi as well as having other menu options like Chinese. It's great if you're in the mood for Asian food, but just not sure from where. It's usually pretty packed in here and gets REAL loud, so don't expect a reserved dining experience.
The food was tasty & the service was good. When it starts to get filled, the noise really gets pretty bad. The restaurant needs some kind of noise dampening waffles. We couldn't talk at our own table of 4 without yelling. We had to leave.
I usually love this place, but the food quality has slipped the last few times ive been there. Had to send back my chicken broccoli . It tasted like it was warmed up and old. The meat had a weird texture. 😕 also feels like I'm being rushed.
Prices have gone up from our last visit. It wasn't that busy and we constantly had to ask for water. The Chou fun was bland. They used to have a happy hour. (They no longer do) they used to take passport cards, (they no longer do) we spent over $100 and when we asked for a bag to carry our leftovers in they asked for .10 cents for the bag. (Really?)
Good service by the waiters and decent food albeit overpriced. Highlight of the evening was the bartender that guards the gender segregated (single occupant only) bathrooms to make sure the right gender uses the right bathroom. Restroom is just a restroom especially if it’s one person at a time.
I ordered for pick up and usually I eat there however I did not have time after work so I ran there and got my food to eat at home…I ordered garlic spinach noodles, garlic edamame, and garlic broccoli…everything looked good but tasted like nothing…I’m really disappointed that I even spent my money. This isn’t the first time that the flavor has gone down in my order but now it’s just not even there…
The food was good except for the San Francisco roll. Service was very lackluster we got seated but it took a long time to for our waitress to to get our orders
Quirky restaurant, clean, with a large menu and fast service. We only ordered appetizers and sushi, but it was mediocre sushi at best and is hard to screw up fried food. The rainbow roll was fine, spicy tuna tasted fishy, and the third was meh. The only reason I’d go back is it’s in walking distance, but then I could walk somewhere else.
I picked up my food through door dash pick up. What I didn't know is that if you order on the phone you get 25% off the price of the food. Otherwise on doordash you pay that extra 25%. The food, I ordered 3 dinner boxes. 2 steak an 1 chicken All 3 dinners were DRY. My folks told me the meat was overcooked. No tenderness. No sauce on the meat like seriously it's steak teriyaki or chicken teriyaki. Those dinners were a disappointment. Our dinners smelled like raw fish. I know at a restaurant you're suppose to separate chicken an steak from the fish. The staff is very friendly an very knowledgeable about what good offers you can get. Which they informed me about the 25% off I mentioned in the beginning of this review.
Forgot my roll. My entire party was almost done eating before they even noticed, then they tried to act like it just took longer to prepare. Beer was cold...chicken chow mein was good...barley any chicken. I won't return.
It was alright. I usually like to first try the not-so-challenging sushi roll (i.e. California crunch roll) to see where the sushi chef's skills and creativity are at. The sushi didn't fall apart and the items stayed intact. However the taste wasn't exactly what I was expecting. There was no creamy texture one would gather as there was but a hair of sliced avocado, so it was dry. I tried the Dragon roll and it too was dry. Even with the sauce on top. So I wouldn't recommend these sushi rolls unless preferences are otherwise. The drinks were nice, and the staff were all so great and accommodating. The decor would be great for a night out.
I've always loved the food here and appreciated the freshness and quality. My family and I come here often. On our last visit, we had 4 adults, 2 babies. We were charged an 18% service charge due to the size of our party! I usually give a 20% tip, not this time. I find this practice extremely greedy, especially for regular customers. TIPS ARE NOT REQUIRED, they are earned.
We ordered Edamame, Genghix Roll, Shrimp Pad Thai, and Peking ribs. My favorite is the genghix roll. I would recommend it. It was crunchy and tasty. They also gave a good portion of Edamame. Pad Thai is alright. I had better pad Thai. It needs more sauce. Peking ribs is ok but it had distinct taste.
Food here is ok just that I ordered two dishes that were supposed to be separate and they came in one pack which is weird cause then I had to share the plate with the other person that ordered the other dish. The miso soup was good. Flavor was ok for the aloha sushi dish but presentation to me is important and so I was not quite happy. I’m assuming they were in a rush cause they were closing but it shouldn’t matter. I’m not sure if I will come back.
I ordered the beef pad thai, Peking ribs, and a salmon bento box that came with miso soup and a spring mix. The spring mix had a sweet dressing that reminded me of honey walnut shrimp. The soup was very salty, and the pad thai was very bland. It needed just a little more fish sauce and tamarind mix! The peking ribs were finger licking delicious, and the portions were generous. Although the food was not as good as the hype from other reviews, the service was 10/10!
BAD SERVICE!!! It wasn’t really a good experience even if we were like a regular customers here. The lady got the plate out the table even if we are still not done eating. She didn’t even bothered asking us if we’re done or not. Then, gave the bill to us even if we aren’t ready to go home yet. We could’ve ordered some deserts but her service was RUDE AND HURRIED so we just paid the bill and went home. NOT A GOOD WAY TO TREAT REGULAR CUSTOMERS!!
We were seated quite promptly on a Sunday evening, our server was alright, however, I do not like the fact that she just poured over and combined some remaining food into one plate, not cool, it's gross. We ordered 3 Japanese rolls and some Chinese dishes; I would say the food was subpar. The Chinese dishes were not authentic, the rolls were alright, but tasted all the same, though that can be our fault for ordering similar things. I would say if you want Chinese or Japanese food specifically, there are way better options in the area; if you want varieties, you are better of going to one of those buffet places.
My daughter and I walked in here at 4:30pm during the weekday. We sat at the bar. The staff was nice and greeted us. My daughter ordered a side car and I ordered a Bloody Mary. The side car was okay. The bartender proceeded to make my bloody Mary. He used his fingers to squeeze put the lemon juice as he couldn't find his lemon juicer. The bartender was actually digging his fingers in the lemon slice. I saw him doing this. He finally finished making my drink. I tried it... Just tomato juice and vodka. He asked me how it was and what it needed. I told him it needed, horse radish, pepper, celery salt. He said he had none of that. I was like, "Oh". If you need good drinks, I would not come here. Bartenders need a bit more training. I didn't try the food though. That will be a different review.
There was nobody hosting so we just waited for a while at the entrance to be seated. I ordered some hot sauce and it was brought to the wrong table, the people on the other table handed it to me. The edamame was slimy. The chicken teriyaki was cut all incorrectly, some pieces were small some way too big, they were also cut in a way that they were all stringy. If this wasn't bad enough the chicken had bone splinters in it. They were so understaffed that I just didn't ask for a refill, they were all running around. Finally the seat covers in the booth where we sat were ripped. The sushi looked really good but my table didn't order any but based on the disappointment of the rest of the food (I was expecting a lot more from their reputation) I may not go back to try it.
I have eaten here many times no problem, but today was terrible! The cucumber salad tasted very old and was sent back but they "forgot" to take it off the bill. Our individual orders came out so staggered that one of us was completely finished before another got her food-and we all ordered sushi. One of the orders came out completely wrong. I will give them another go, but today was bad.
Some of the worst Chinese food I’ve ever eaten. Horrible food. Don’t waste your money here.
I have been here several times before and have never had an issue. My last visit was traumatizing. We sat at the sushi bar, we were never given menus we had to go get them, when I poured the soy sauce a fly poured out from it, and there were cockroaches all over the bar. When I quickly brought this to their attention they said we just cleaned and it may have stirred them up. That does not explain the flies in the soy sauce nor make much sense to me but sure.
Ordered to go. Absolutely the nastiest chx pad Thai I’ve ever had in my entire existence! Wish I could give it a tenth of a star. I only chose pad Thai because it’s really hard to ruin, as I have it at dozens and dozens of different restaurants. First time for everything. It had ZERO flavor. The noodles were very poorly cooked. The chicken flavorless. To make matters worse, I asked for peanut sauce. She said it was in there and it wasn’t. I was so tempted to take it back, but it’s already been a very long trip for me. DO NOT EAT PAD THAI FROM HERE!! That was my bad! Took a MAJOR L today. SMDH
I went here cuz of good reviews but no i ordered bento box tempura with beef teriyaki it was bad only flour lil shrimp and salad the dressing to sweet u cant eat it!!! And my husbsnd ordered combo noodle soup the beef soup horrible !! Miso soup cold !!! Not recommended very dissapointed !!! We left didnt finished the food !!! 🤢🤢🤢
Our first visit was good, which is why we decided to return, but this time the experience was extremely disappointing. The spring rolls were not good, the sushi was just okay, and the service was poor throughout the night. Most concerning was the fried rice — the meat had a bad smell and was inedible. Both the food quality and service were far below expectations. A 20% tip was automatically added due to our reservation and party of six, which felt unjustified given the experience. Unfortunately, after this visit, we will not be returning.
