First visit and won’t be my last! Stopped in soon after opening on a lazy summer Saturday and was rewarded with a welcoming atmosphere, friendly folks, a $3 mimosa and a crazy good oyster po’boy. Cajun French fries were filling, unusual and tasty and my friend’s fruit side was ample and fresh. Gave St. Pedro (centerish candle) a little wave on the way out and thanked him for a delightful lunch.

Loved the lunch special. I got the fish sandwich blackened. I wish they had fresh sweet tea. It's a very unique option on Franklin Street. There's often live music too at night

We wanted to try Imbibe and sample some Cajun food. I ordered a half Mufeletta and my partner in crime, an oyster Po Boy. And since I hadn't had a cheese curd in 20 years, I had to order them as well. Probably no surprise, it was a lot of food. The "half" Mufeletta was huge! I ended up only eating half of the half. It was quite good, certainly something different for me. My wife thought her Po Boy was fantastic. I had a bite and it was super good. The cheese curds were as good as I remembered. So, Imbibe was a nice experience. I'll look forward to visiting again and trying some different items from the menu.

Great food! Really enjoyed everything I ordered and will be eating here frequently. Crazy amazing softshell crab, great fried oysters, love the pickles and the potato salad was wonderful. This is the real deal for great fresh seafood with great flavors located right here in CH. Go forth & IMBIBE.

This is absolutely one of the best places in Chapel Hill or Carrboro. The atmosphere, the music, the people, the pure quirkiness and beauty. Please keep going! I’ve eaten about everything on the menu but I think the specials are often the best.

Amazing service and delicious food. My partner got a chicken poy boy, and I had the vegan jambalaya and falafel po boy. I have never been more pleasantly surprised by the food and decor. Update: the fries got more delicious.

Seriously delish NOLA goodness here. Menu rotates based on freshness and quality. We had two amazing soft shell crab dishes. Great beer selection. Sweet live 3-piece jazz on Mondays and Wednesdays.

This is one of my favorite restaurants. I LOVE the shrimp and grits. I’ve eaten many other things too…I like the mussels when they are on the menu because they are AMAZING. You are going to come here and have an atmosphere that is 100% not Panera or some sort of fast food restaurant. The food will be outrageously delicious and not expensive by any sort of Chapel Hill standard. There will be good music and nice people. There will be interesting books and board games to look at and good drinks. Overall amazing vibe and absurdly delicious food. I like to come for lunch and buy my shrimp and grits and Diet Coke and take bottles of wine to go. I also like to come in for a drink in the evening like a normal adult but usually I don’t because I have children and I’m running around at their activities. Oh, and if you also have kids and your kids like food and know how to conduct themselves in a restaurant they will like this restaurant too. My kids love this place and Mandey.

Great food and drink. Amazing, attentive service. Very impressed out of towners. Thank you for a unique, wonderful experience! 😁 John, the bartender was knowledgeable, informative and very friendly.

This is the perfect classy dive with good food that I have been looking for! It has so much character and very affordable prices, especially for being on Franklin st. I was so impressed with the food. My boyfriend got the shrimp po boy and I got the shrimp and grits. Shrimp and grits is often hard to impress me with but they did a great job! The grits were creamy and the shrimp and sausage seasoned perfectly. I would highly recommend checking this place out!

Such a cool joint. My wife and I drove 45 minutes to try it out. Wasn't many people since it's the day after Christmas. The NOLA shrimp was great, the blackened fish was awesome, and the gumbo was amazing. Got some gumbo to bring home too. Prices are very reasonable for the area. The bartender/server was a really nice guy, the cook/server/(owner I think) was really cool and nice. The digs were really cool and relaxed and go with the theme. Some guy was playing guitar outside, and maybe that's normal for the area, but not where I presently live. If I lived in Chapel Hill I'd probably go there once a week for a beer and some gumbo. Good find.

I ordered delivery from this spot. Got dissed w the normal corporate bullshit. Owner reached out to me directly. Unreal! Why can’t we just go back to this one-to-one accountability? Ethically, this place is 4 trillion stars. Support this real enterprise. So much love.

Rougarou is one of our absolute favorite spots! The vibe is casual and fun and Mandy’s food is AMAZING. I’ve never liked a hush puppy before this place. Get the cheese bites and party ranch and thank me later. And Neil is always killing it behind the bar; he gives great recommendations and makes everyone feel welcome! Can’t recommend this place enough.

Ok ok ok, I’m bias… I periodically perform at this establishment, but I can offer an objective view. Unique & a standout in a populated area. Mandey is a jewel & Neil is a great paired part of the restaurant. The food is creatively designed, prepared & delicious. The evidence is in the first bite. Words can only lead, and as the old saying goes, the proof is in the pudding (pudding is not served here though!! Or maybe it’ll be added lol) so go taste & see….& maybe we’ll meet each other with good tunes to enjoy..

This place is a gem! Delicious!!! I stopped by on a Saturday morning and it was nice and quiet—only a few other people were there. I ordered the fried chicken, cabbage, and mac n cheese, and every bite was southern-style perfection. Also, if you like Bojangles sweet tea, you’ll love it here! Get one of those square biscuits and the cinnamon roll! Must try! The biscuit was buttery and melt in your mouth and cinnamon roll had perfect amount of icing. It is like a diner inside and has an old school feel. The location is perfect—right on Franklin Street and super convenient if you’re out hitting the shops. Definitely give them a try!

If you're looking for a place to eat that hits all the nostalgia buttons and has a long history of being a gem among eateries, Time Out is it. The Chicken & Cheddar Biscuit was absolutely phenomenal. The chicken breast they used was massive and definitely a meal in itself. My wife got the regular fried chicken plate and again, the chicken was great. Whenever I come back to Chapel Hill, I'll be stopping here again for sure!

Found this gem of a restaurant on a humbug. Chicken taste like the colonel’s on steroid. Green beans slightly greasy like grandma’s, Mac & cheese is immaculate. 3 people ordered just that alone. Ask for a chicken sandwich. Y’all get a bone-in fillet on bread of choice..

Excellent food, service, and atmosphere. As a lifelong Tar Heel fan, I loved seeing the legendary players' photos on the walls. Time-Out serves all the classic Southern comfort foods, and my Sunday morning visit at 7 AM did not disappoint—the food looked amazing and tasted just as good. If you're in the area, I highly recommend stopping by with a big appetite!

Southern food 24/7 that is delicious and well priced?! Give it a try. This place hit the spot for me. Best collard greens I've had in a long time. Carolina BBQ, black eyed peas, biscuit, iced sweet and very kind service made for an excellent meal. Can't wait to come back and try the many other tasty looking foods.

If you are looking for a foo-foo restaurant with a wine menu and white linen napkins, this ain't it. However if you want a ton of good southern cooking at a reasonable price then welcome home! My wife and I were in town for the Miami vs. UNC game (we lost, so sad). My wife had the chicken liver dinner and I had the pulled pork dinner. The fried biscuits, cornbread, okra and cabbage are excellent. If you leave here hungry it's your own fault! The only knock was the service. The lady serving up the food was great but the guy that waited on my wife acted like he wanted to be anywhere but there. The gentleman at the cash register was also exceptional. We will definitely visit again if we venture back to Chapel Hill.

Go for the biscuits, but stay for the pie! While staying in western NC a few weeks ago we planned a day trip out to Chapel Hill just to visit Time-Out after hearing such amazing things. Let me tell you that the 4ish hour drive was 1000000% worth it!!! The chicken biscuit was unlike any other, the flavor was OUTSTANDING and it was huge. From what I understand, they fry the chicken on the bone then remove the bone to make the biscuit sandwich. This absolutely makes a difference in taste. It doesnt just taste like chicken on a biscuit, it has that delicious fresh fried chicken taste. We ordered our food as takeout so we could eat in the car with our pup and when we got to the pecan pie...I took a bite and cried tears of joy...it was AMAZING. I IMMEDIATELY went inside to get more for the road (and some cinnamon rolls which were also very delicious). The owner is unbelievably nice and couldn't believe we drove all the way just to try the food, his reaction made my day. I have been in the food service industry my whole life and meeting people like him just makes a great restaurant even better. I cannot say enough about how happy we were with our visit. Time-Out was definitely a highlight of our vacation and I cannot wait to come back...next time I plan on ordering a pecan pie (or two) in advance.

Dirty fries were pretty good, I forget what the fried balls are, and ghost pepper pork rinds. The pork rinds are made in house so they are fresh. Don't order the ghost pepper ones unless you are hard core. BF and I had them and spent the next two days running to the bathroom. Yes they really are that hot. Totally worth it though... We ate every last one.

The food is really quite good! I give it 4 stars because it seems like they run out of ingredients a good bit, limiting their selection - but they are very kind and gracious in replacing items and giving a little extra to make up for any substitutions. Additionally, there were some minor things I wasn’t a big fan of - lack of salt on fries, etc - but overall it was excellent. I took my food to go, but I don’t think I would’ve enjoyed eating in the restaurant at least in the daytime. It was quite dark. But based off pictures, it’s much nicer at night!

Stopped by this 24-hour diner for a quick bite and left with mixed impressions but a full stomach. The honey biscuit was a bit too much on the sweet side—drenched in honey to the point where I couldn’t really taste the biscuit itself. A lighter touch would go a long way. On the other hand, the chicken cheese biscuit sandwich featured a generous, juicy piece of chicken, though it was slightly over-salted for my taste. Service was excellent—the worker was both friendly and informative, and my order came out fast. You really can’t beat the prices here, especially with the size of the portions and the fact that it’s open 24/7. The menu is huge, and I’m already planning my next visit. Looking forward to trying a plain biscuit to really get a sense of the flavor, and I’ve got my eye on a cinnamon roll too.

Fried Chicken, MJ Legends & a Bucket of Bones While visiting UNC Chapel Hill, we made a stop at Time-Out, and it turned into one of the most unexpectedly charming, delicious, and story-filled meals of our trip. The owner, who still works the register after many decades, told us the backstory behind their legendary Bucket of Bones - a brilliant bit of Southern ingenuity. Back in the day, they’d cut the meat off fried chicken for sandwiches and were left with a pile of bones still loaded with flavor. So what did they do? Gave folks a way to eat what many really want anyway: the juicy, tender meat right by the bone. A hit was born, apparently and Michael Jordan loved it too when he was in school at UNC. He still comes by from time to time, we were told. But truly, the fried chicken is the standout. That crackly, hard shell crust? Unreal. It breaks apart like a potato chip and gives way to perfectly seasoned meat. Collard greens were melt-in-your-mouth tender. The mac and cheese didn’t hit the same- too much oil and that familiar separation that happens when the cheese sauce “breaks” from overheating or too much fat without emulsification. Cornbread was sweet, more like a honey cake and made a great unofficial dessert. The place feels like a diner frozen in time in the best way - a classic buffet line, Southern hospitality, and storytelling that stays with you. I’d definitely come back, if only for that bucket and that crust.

Good food and good service! If you’re looking for some affordable southern comfort food keep Time Out in mind. The meal was fresh and tasty! There was a nice variety of menu items to try. The food was already made so there was no wait. Handicap accessible. Street parking and space is limited. Open 24 hrs. Family friendly.

I stopped by here with my son sometime after 12:30am on a Friday night after leaving the Vintage Movie Theater. We stood outside for a solid 10 minutes looking at the online menu before deciding to go in. When I went in, I looked at the actual menu for a while. It then started to get busy. I ended up getting in line around 12:45am. While waiting in line, fresh chicken came out and of course I didn’t get it. I ordered the dark meat combo with cabbage, mashed potatoes, and cornbread. I finally got my food around 1am. The mashed potatoes and cabbage was delicious! I had a huge helping of mashed potatoes. I hadn’t had either, especially cabbage, in so long. My thigh was really crispy, warm/hot, and delicious. My drumstick, on the other hand, was on the lukewarm/cooler scale and not crispy at all. The cornbread was somewhat of a let down. I was really expecting more and wondered if I should’ve gotten the biscuit instead. While it was fairly large in size, it tasted overcooked. It wasn’t nasty and I ate it, but it definitely wasn’t a nice piece of golden cornbread. Overall, for it to be a place open 24/7 and selling soul food, it wasn’t bad. I would come back.

It was good. If everything was hot it would be 5 stars. I did get it delivered and it was 20 minutes away so maybe that had something to do with it. I can see the fried chicken being really good fresh out the fryer. Mashed potatoes and mac & cheese was okay. Homefries arrived lukewarm but well seasoned. Biscuits were great! Cinnamon roll was the best thing though. So good. I'll come back but at a different time of day.

My family is here out of town and everything I researched said to eat here and so we did. We tried the famous Chicken n' Cheddar biscuit, mac and cheese, fried okra, cinnamon roll, and sweet potato pie. The sandwich overall was a bit dry, but still delicious. The biscuit alone was so amazing. The mac and cheese was nothing special, I've had better but I've had worse. We had never tried fried okra but it was delicious too. The cinnamon roll was great, as was the pie. I was really excited to see that they had Cherrywine on their beverage list as that was something we wanted to try. It's so good and very unique. Overall, this was a nice and inexpensive stop to try local foods!

I love the vibes of this place. It is cool. It definitely has a Louisiana 👢 look and vibe to it. They have live music during the week. I definitely will be back for that. It seems like it may be quite the experience. I ordered takeout from this place. I will come back and have an in-dining experience and update my review. I tried the fried oysters. They were fried nicely but if you are talking about a Louisiana restaurant, you have to come with the flavor and the seasoning. They were lacking the Louisiana seasoning. I ordered the Mufalleta sandwich 🥪, the one with the meats (ham, salami, etc.). This sandwich 🥪 was also lacking flavor. The olive salad was too tangy. The meat-to-bread ratio was off: not enough meat compared to how thick the bread is. The fries weren't bad. They could use a better selection of fries, but not bad. The falafel was bland in my opinion. However, what saved the day was the Fried Pork Rinds! They were Crispy and crunchy. I ordered the Cajun style. Definitely, some great Pork rinds here. I'll try something else when I go back. Let me know what you all think about it!

The atmosphere was great, but the food was nothing too special. Would definitely go to catch live music.

I was very excited to patronize this eatery due to the aromatic aroma of the fried chicken. I was disappointed by the chicken being very salty, mac and cheese was ok, mashed potatoes and gravy, the cabbage, and the lemonade were the best parts. Maybe the time of day matters. I'll try earlier to see if there is a difference. The cookie and ice cream dessert was good. Would have liked more pecans.

I just came in today wanting to try something new! The atmosphere is perfect. The staff were super nice! However, the food was okay but i didn’t get much. I ordered the shrimp and grits and a side of Cajun fries. The portion I got for the fries was bigger than the shrimp and grits. It took forever (my whole lunch break)to get my food and I had burnt bottom pieces in my grits and not much of it.

Went with my friends on a Saturday night, and the place was completely dead. Monday and Wednesday nights seem to be the active days, so whatever. The menu was a stained sheet of paper with a QR code to their online menu and some specials. There was no table service, and the food had to be ordered online before you tell the bartender your order. I've ordered from a QR code menu before, so I was optimistic, while my friends were a little perplexed. We scanned the QR code and that's when everything went wrong. Half of us were able to scour the menu, pick food, and head to the checkout. I managed to put in my card details but the website immediately froze upon processing my orders. The other half were incapable of accessing the online menu at all, the website server refusing to load. Then the site crashed for all of us. We alerted the bartender who was kind enough to take out a pen and paper and do it the old school way, however the lack of paper menu was really baffling to me at this point. Those of us who managed to put in our orders were reassured that the orders hadn't been accepted yet, but a website crashing with our credit card details didn't make us feel any better. But the bartender and another worker assured us the food would be out. We ordered multiple Po Boys, and waited. It was a long wait, but the food was delicious. I got a blackened pork belly po boy on ciabatta bread that was greasy in all the right ways, if a little salty. My friends who ordered shrimp po boys were a little unsatisfied with the size of the shrimps. But we ate, we dined, we paid, and we left. Overall, it was a ... meh? Experience. I wouldn't return again personally, maybe if it was a busy night with live blues shows, but the QR code and lack of table service left a sour taste in my mouth. Also, the restaurant website requested a tip despite there being no table service. In my opinion, if there is no table service, there should be an option to tip the cooks/bartender directly... or no tip at all! I have no idea if those tips are going to the owner or the workers who actually helped us. I can't imagine how the website holds up during inclement weather, older customers who aren't familiar with QR codes, busy crowds with multiple people accessing the site at once, etc. My advice to the owners: replace the QR codes with reusable paper menus, put at least one waiter for table service on slow days if you're gonna ask for tips, and clean your bathrooms.

The pulled chicken plate left a lot to be desired. The chicken was super salty and lacked much other flavor outside of that. The collard greens and green beans had zero flavor; they tasted like hey went from can to plate. The biscuit was no different from everything else. I would have given it one star but the pecan pie was pretty tasty.

I stopped by Time Out for a quick bite, but this visit was extremely disappointing. From the moment I walked in, no one greeted me not even a simple “hello” which was already strike one. When I went to order a chicken biscuit with egg, the employee grabbed a piece of chicken straight from the food line, which looked like it had been sitting there for hours. The food didn’t look fresh at all. To make matters worse, he handled my food, WITHOUT WEARING GLOVES!!! Completely unacceptable for any establishment serving the public. As someone who works as a supervisor in a hospital food service, I know how important proper food safety and customer service are. If I can ensure patients, families, and staff receive quality, fresh meals every day, I expect the same basic standards from a restaurant. Unfortunately, Time Out fell far below that mark. I won’t be returning anytime soon, and I hope management takes sanitation and service more seriously going forward.

Waste of time and money! Went in as a family, hoping to enjoy some yummy food for a reasonable price. Awful food, even worse people behind the counter. Super rude, but I could've gotten over that if the food was decent. It was terrible, seriously the worst food I've had from an establishment in a long time. Bojangles would've been 1000x better! The biscuit and excuse for chicken was laughable, they had been sitting for a minimum of 12 hours, I'm sure. I was excited to try this place but will definitely not bother trying again!
