You probably missed it when you were looking for it… it’s that sexy and mysterious black door. The name of the restaurant is so subtle. Such a tease and I’m here for it. Inside doesn’t disappoint. I was obsessed with the gorgeous glass bricks on the exterior. We sat at the bar because that’s our vibe. We love hanging with the bartenders. They were all so nice and attentive. Our water glasses were never empty. They waited patiently for breaks in our conversation to ask if we needed anything. They paced the plates out perfectly. Every bite was fun and interesting and most importantly different from any place I’ve ever been. The menu was full of unique kinds of food, prepared and mixed up in different ways that really intrigued us. I wanted a single bite of all of it. Their tequila selection was beyond impressive. A whole wall from counter to ceiling, they have to climb to get things from the top. The bone marrow tacos were an obvious choice, please get them - don’t be a wuss. The cocktails were nice too. I HATE espresso martinis…but this place changed my mind! It was perfectly bitter with a hint of sweetness, didn’t have that artificial coffee flavor either. So so good! Can’t wait to come back here. Valet next door was only $12! Super easy. Parking downtown can be so annoying.
Ella and Alieana were amazing. They were funny, super attentive, and just really helpful the whole time. Both my friend and I have allergies, and they took it seriously and made everything easy for us. We felt totally comfortable ordering, which isn’t always the case. And the food was unreal. Easily some of the best I’ve ever had. It was my first time there, but definitely not my last
Had the best night at Comedor in Austin for my friend’s bachelorette! We had a bit of a rough start, but the manager (I believe her name was Bar/Barb) completely turned the evening around with such great hospitality — truly appreciated. Our server Andrea was phenomenal from start to finish: attentive, fun, and made sure our group was taken care of all night. And the food… SO good. The bone marrow tacos are an absolute must — easily one of the highlights of the meal. Overall, such a memorable experience and a perfect spot for a celebration. We’ll definitely be back!
Had a fantastic experience with Ms. Taylor. She gave us phenomenal recos, and everything was delivered beyond our expectations. It was our anniversary and she made it so special. Definitely a night to remember. Will be back. I encourage anyone curious to come try the food, and request Ms. Taylor for a top notch experience.
This is my second time coming to Comedor and both times have been really stellar. Great menu with lots of choices. It's designed to be shared "small" plates, but the portions are not small! My table of 4 was pretty stuffed after 7 dishes, and the server recommended 6-8 for our party. Standouts for me were the tacos de res, lamb barbacoa, and pescado fundido. The service is spot on (quick, kind, there when you need them, not when you don't) and it's a lovely atmosphere (elegant, understated, not too loud, not too dim). Don't skip the helado de platano! P.S. - Yes, the door is impossible to find.
The Austin Foodies Meetup had the recent pleasure of dining at Comedor. Our group really enjoyed their time here, and the elegant and nice ambiance. The staff above and beyond in accommodating our group size, which is a bit large for some restaurants. Comedor's staff frequently checked up on us, and made us feel so welcomed and attended. They even provided quality food recommendations and quickly served us food. Overall, our foodies meetup really enjoyed our time and we would highly recommend this place. We will be back!
Where to start? I am a repeat client. If I am going to eat downtown, I want to eat at Comedor. First of all, the interior is elegant and welcoming. My favorite spot is the patio. But, of course, it is all about the food. Each dish is presented beautifully. Each dish is uniquely sauced and seasoned perfectly. All ingredients are best quality. On this visit, standouts were the aguachile and quesadilla. I enjoyed a delicious mocktail, the Sendero Verde. Service: I have food allergies, and they were addressed directly and thoroughly. We were not rushed through our dinner. Bartenders and waitstaff are friendly, attentive, and informed. I look forward to my next visit.
I’m a huge fan of Comedor! Where incredible architecture meets delicious food and well paired mezcal. I enjoyed the bone marrow tacos and the wagyu tacos, we had great shareable plates as well. My favorite part was pouring the mezcal down the bone and drinking it with the oils of the meat. This was a recommendation by our server and it was very memorable in flavor! We went here for a birthday dinner and they kindly gifted us the desert. Can’t wait to go back!
This place is near my apartment but would be worth a trip across town. I've dined there several times with guests and without exception, they loved it. I personally am a big fan of decor that is repurposed -- this one was a factory or warehouse and it makes great use of the cavernous space, with beautiful lighting and decor. The food is a unique kind of Mexican fusion. My go to is the fish tacos and the hummus. They have an ice cream desert (i forgot the name of it) but it's been there since the restaurant opened and is hugely popular for good reason.
We hosted a Welcome Event for 120 people for our son's wedding on a Friday night in December. We had a full restaurant buy-out, and having eaten there before, we were pretty confident the food would be amazing. Our expectations, not only for the food, but also the service, the layout of the space, the quality of the cocktails, and the overall experience, were met and then some. We worked with Events Manager, Evan Cowley to plan the event. He was accessible, competent, and accommodating - both in the lead up to the event and the evening of our party itself. His attention to our wishes and every detail was noteworthy. The entire staff who worked the event were tremendous; so much so that our guests approached us both during and after the evening to comment on the extraordinary and personalized service delivered by the Comedor team. In addition to the food and service, the space itself is magnificent. Upscale, yet casual; the elevated "Austin" vibe was exactly what we were looking for. No need to bring any decor or flowers, the space speaks for itself. We happened to have a gorgeous weather night which allowed the roof to be open, with food stations and casual seating plentiful - both indoors and out. On Evan's suggestion, we added a satellite bar, with a tequila tasting, which was an enormous hit with everyone! If I could give more than 5 stars - I would do so without hesitation! Kudos to the entire Comedor team and restaurant for a job VERY WELL DONE!
Went to Comedor to celebrate a friend’s birthday & couldn’t have gone better! It was our first time dining there and the experience was excellent. The atmosphere is intoxicating, the food was incredible, & Caitlyn, our server, made us feel welcomed and well taken care of. The entire staff made the night exceptional. Special compliments to the chef! Excited to return in the future!
Mind-Blowing Flavors and Unforgettable Service – A True Austin Gem Wow. This vibrant, upscale Mexican restaurant in the heart of downtown Austin is absolutely Michelin-recognized for a reason. My mind was blown by the explosion of flavors and creative spice combinations in every dish — it felt like each bite told a story. The cocktails were incredibly well-crafted and came out quickly, setting the tone for what turned out to be one of the best dining experiences my wife and I have ever had. Their bone marrow tacos are a must. Rich, bold, and packed with flavors, the fish tacos were equally phenomenal. After we devoured the bone marrow tacos, one of the bartenders surprised us by coming over and recommending we take a mezcal shot down the bone to celebrate our anniversary. He even took the time to explain the origins of the mezcal. That moment turned an already amazing night into an unforgettable one. The staff here is on another level. Yadi the manager stopped by our table to check in and make sure everything was perfect — and it truly was. The service was warm, professional, and full of heart. This is the kind of place you rave about to your friends and we absolutely will. Thank you for an incredible experience!
Went in for the first time FINALLY with my friend as a sort of “cheer-me-up” girl date/birthday and was blown away with this spot! Rocky was not only our bartender but also an amazing server from the very start, greeting us with warmth. The menu was a little confusing for some things we were unfamiliar with but Rocky gave us great suggestions as well as helped us understand the rest of it. Each dish was uniquely deliciously with rich flavors that paired well with each other. By the end of the night we were perfectly full, KNOWING we’ll be back again! Thank you to Rocky and the staff for making our night so special!
A fantastic dining experience with exceptional service. As soon as you walk in you are welcomed by the servers, bartenders and even the managers. The food was beyond anything I expected. The bone marrow tacos are to die for and everything else was just as good. Shout-out to Blake our server who ensured we selected the best dishes for our night out. Also, get the tiramasa. Best thing I have ever eaten.
Absolutely loved this place, the people that go there show how lovely it is, lots of regulars. Staff are knowledgeable, friendly and have been there for ages. Bar staff talk passionately about the chefs and awards. RUN to this place and order the pavlova! As a long time pastry chef it was the most perfect combination of flavors. Loved it.
Absolutely amazing restaurant. Food and service included. Probably one of the highlights of our trip to Austin. Bone marrow tacos were out of this world. We appreciated that they also had non-alcoholic mocktails that were well thought. Will absolutely be making a return trip my next time to Austin
I visited Comedor for the first time last night and was incredibly impressed from start to finish. Despite arriving about 20 minutes late for my reservation, the host team was gracious and accommodating, quickly finding a table and ensuring my evening started off right. I began with the Beet Happening mocktail—refreshing, subtly sweet with a healthy twist and just the right amount of kick. It set the perfect tone for the rest of the meal. For starters, I tried the bone marrow tacos, Comedor’s signature dish, and they were nothing short of exceptional—rich, flavorful, and easily my favorite of the night. I also enjoyed the crudo and queso fundido, followed by a beautifully cooked NY strip paired with a glass of Italian wine that complemented the steak perfectly. Though I didn’t have room for dessert, the general manager personally stopped by to check in, which added a thoughtful touch to the experience. The service, atmosphere, and attention to detail at Comedor truly set it apart. I’ll definitely be returning soon. Thank you Adrian.
Comedor — Austin’s Most Delicious Bunker Dinner at Comedor feels less like going out to eat and more like being invited to a secret society that worships Mexican technique, candlelight, and premium pricing. Finding the place alone feels like an escape room challenge—solve the concrete façade, locate the door, descend into darkness. Once inside, the lights stay low. Very low. So low you start wondering if Austin Energy is running a social experiment. The ambiance is… committed. Dark, bunker-like, candles flickering everywhere, Mexican music looping in a way that makes it feel like Día de Muertos has been going on uninterrupted for several years. Atmospheric? Yes. Confusing? Also yes. Romantic? Possibly—if your idea of romance involves whispering and squinting at your plate. Thankfully, the service snaps everything into focus. I sat at the bar, which is absolutely where you should be. Josh, the bartender, is a masterclass in calm confidence—precise, warm, and deeply knowledgeable without ever flexing. Miguel, his right hand, mirrors that same sharp command of the menu and drinks. Together, they run the bar like a well-rehearsed duet: recommendations land perfectly, cocktails arrive exactly when you want them, and you feel taken care of in a way that justifies some of the sticker shock that’s coming your way. The food itself is a thoughtful, modern mix of Mexican creations—rooted in tradition but not trapped by it. Portions are solid, plating is handsome, and the kitchen clearly knows what it’s doing. Start with the cold mix of smoked vegetables salad with chapulines, which is a must-order appetizer. Smoky, earthy, chilled just right, and textured beautifully by the chapulines—it’s confident, surprising, and quietly addictive. Even skeptics at the table will be converted by the second bite. The standout main is the pork chop milanesa over manchamanteles mole. The pork is beautifully cooked, the mole rich and expressive, and the whole thing eats like a dish that knows it’s the star. That said, the decision to crown it with cold pickled chiles is… questionable. The temperature clash pulls you out of the moment, like a DJ scratching the record during a love song. Not disastrous—but unnecessary. Pricing, however, is where Comedor raises an eyebrow. A milanesa at $70 or barbacoa at $71 is objectively a lot. The dishes are good, sometimes excellent—but this is special-occasion territory, whether you planned it or not. Still, as much as I winced, I didn’t regret ordering them. That’s the dangerous part. Dessert brings the meal to a high note with the tamal de chocolate, which is genuinely one of the most unique desserts I’ve ever tried. Deeply chocolatey, texturally fascinating, and not overly sweet, it feels both ancient and futuristic—like something you’d be told was “a traditional recipe” or “invented last week,” and you’d believe either. Final verdict: Comedor is absolutely worth visiting in Austin—especially if you sit at the bar and let the staff guide you. Come for thoughtful Mexican cooking, stay for exceptional service, and brace yourself for prices that make you pause mid-sip. It’s not an everyday restaurant, but it is a memorable one. Best for diners who value experience, excellent cocktails, and don’t mind paying a little extra to eat well in the dark.
Comedor, one of the best dining experiences in Austin for intimate and private dinings. From the moment you walk in, the space feels superb — sleek, warm, and unmistakably Austin with that gorgeous living wall and open kitchen energy. The menu: Every dish I savored felt thoughtful and bold at the same time. The bone-marrow tacos are legendary for a reason (rich, smoky, and perfectly balanced with the salsa macha), but don’t sleep on the Berkshire pork chop that literally melts in your mouth. The crudo was incredibly fresh and so well balanced, but with a kick of hot 🔥 to it. Cocktails are creative (and delicious) — the Repo Ginger and the Oaxaca Marg are worth the visit alone. Service is attentive without being overbearing, and the staff clearly loves what they do; our server gave us perfect recommendations and made the whole night feel effortless. One tiny nitpick: the lighting is pretty dim (very moody and romantic), so have your phone flashlight ready if you actually want to read the menu or admire the plating in detail. It’s a small trade-off for the vibe they’re going for
The environment is definitely aimed at upscale. Our server was polite but not the most attentive. Recommendations were a little off for our party size. We ordered nearly everything on the menu, including duplicates to make sure everyone got to try it all. Most of the dishes were what I would consider average in taste and creativity. Our server pushed us to order all at once so that dishes would arrive in proper order but things arrived out of order including a main protein just before dessert. The lamb barbacoa and NY strip were both good. Everything else was just a little on the plain side. The flavors/combos didn't really stand out or present exciting combos. The pescado fundido was incredibly smoky so much that it overpowered all other flavors. Many dishes had so much garnish that it was unclear whether they were intended to be consumed or were merely for decoration. The atmosphere was nice, albeit loud and very dark. I don't think I would visit again.
It was our first time here, and reservations are definitely recommended. As a Michelin-star restaurant, you can feel the elevated experience from the start. With its inspiration in Mexican cuisine, we were eager to try it—especially since I have a Mexican background. We were seated right away and started with salads topped with roasted crickets, followed by flavorful fish tacos. The lamb barbacoa entrée, however, was disappointing. At $70+, it didn’t live up to expectations—too mushy in texture and not at all reminiscent of true barbacoa. It left a lot to be desired. The ambiance was also challenging. The restaurant is extremely dark, making it hard to appreciate the details of the food and décor. On the positive side, service was phenomenal—the staff went the extra mile to explain the menu and the overall concept. This has the potential to be an outstanding experience if they adjust the lighting and rethink the music. For now, it feels like a missed opportunity. Hopefully, next time will be better.
Drinks were good. Food was…like when your friend says she can elevate a taco by doing something to it and you don’t quite know what that something was and you can’t figure it out even hours later. It was just weird. They took a shot at elevating Mexican food and just whiffed on some dishes. A few staples were ok. The Pavlova and Chocolate cake at the end were actually worse than the dinner. Like eating sand. Sand would have been a better investment. Bone marrow tacos are cool to look at but…just don’t. Fish tacos are…fried fish tacos. Ok. Go for a drink. Maybe an app and just choose your main carefully. Like I said. There are some things that are fine. Also it’s very dark inside.
The atmosphere was nice and the music was relaxing. However, the food was 1 star. To start to got the Heirloom hommus that came with veggies, it was ok. Nothing special. Next we got the bone marrow which the waiter said is what they’re know for but it was bad. It smelled bad when we removed the filling. I can’t even describe the smell. I felt like throwing up. The kale at the bottom tasted better that the expensive bone. (don’t get it!) Than we had NY Strip steak, medium well. It was very salty. I couldn’t even enjoy the flavor because of how salty it was. I wanted to send everything back but my partner refused. It’s a manners thing for him but for the price? Do better. People are paying top dollar. $71 just for the steak. Now the drinks, also not good. We won’t be going back.
