The place is quaint and pleasant. The staff was efficient and courteous. The GM Barbara was also very attentive and made it a point to double check on our food and overall experience. The food was delivered in a timely, but unrushed manner and it was excellent. The French onion soup is one of the best I have ever had. The food gras, which is not always available was very well prepared and was delicious. The entrees (steak, and fish special ) were also excellent. Overall it was a great dining experience.
Wow! Just wow! Some of the best drinks, appetizers, food, and deserts EVER! Their food is fresh and made to order. We have NEVER had such an amazing dining experience! The service was impeccable. This will definitely be our to go to in the future! I highly suggest not to try the chain restaurants. This place will leave you in pure bliss. Thank you!!!!
Fantastic food! Ive been here many time over the last few years and loved each one. The owner is a wonderful woman along with Julian who served us on many accounts. I highly recommend the New York Steak with the peppercorn sauce. It's delicious and the veggies are superb. If you want an incredible meal come here!
We ate at Gemelli's the first night we stayed in Dana point and went back every night for our 4 day trip! We never do that! But this traditional French restaurant had everything: amazing food cooked perfectly, a quiet & lovely covered patio with views of the cliffs (if not the noisy/busy harbor everyone else was packed into) thoughtful & attentive service from Kevin every night, and charming French music from days gone to provide just the right ambience. We've lived and travelled all over including the French countryside & this place had the feel of a family business that's been around in a place for a long time the way restaurants are in Europe: because they add the right touches to add to local foods & enjoy giving customers a special evening. We had escargot every night both ways, so good! The duck was amazing. And we couldn't get over the Sand Dabs, a perfect light juicy flaky crispy deliciousness! And EVERYTHING had the perfect sauce as good French cuisine should! Thank you Gemmell's for making our trip very special!
Charming French style restaurant with a comfortable upscale feeling. The food and service were wonderful. I ordered eggs Benedict and happily the sauce was perfect! The servers were friendly and attentive and made an adjustment to my dish. I prefer ham to Canadian bacon. All in all, a very pleasing find in Dana Point Harbor!
Absolutely fabulous food! The ambience is peaceful, but nothing beats the food. French cuisine is my favorite and this just hits every mark for me. I might actually be addicted to the poached salmon by now and the French onion soup is literal perfection. Can’t get enough!
This is my most favorite restaurant and cuisine in all of South Orange County California! I have visited here often through the years and introduced it to my best friend just last night! She is a self made chef and knows what is good and what also meets her high standards. The lemon tart is now her most favorite at Gemmell's who also wowed her a main choice of Sand Dabs. She never had them before but she loved them. They were cooked in such a way they were so light to the palate. The ambience is always classy and warm and private and festive and personal. The decor takes you away to another time and another world. I can never part with their Chicken Elizabeth but I added their fresh mushroom soup to my meal. If you want a taste of heaven go to Gemmell's. You will not be disappointed ever!
Really a very nice place for French food. Not many of those left. They're all taco restaurants now. Over Christmas the decorations are gorgeous. It is worth coming in and going to the tiny bar and having a drink just look at the decorations.
One of my absolute favorite restaurants for fine dining! The mushroom soup is fantastic! The seafood dishes are served with very flavorful sauces, the wine cellar is fantastic and the desserts superb! The servers are personable and allow you time to dine leisurely. Love this restaurant!
We'd used the Groupon for a 4 course meal for two. The atmosphere was nice, service was excellent, and the food was amazing. They also worked with my gluten issues, changing the way a dish was prepared, offering a different dessert. Had no problem. A lovely evening.
I'm so glad that I found this restaurant! I was concerned that it wasn't opening today, but it just opened a little later than posted. Chicken/mushroom crepe, potato leek soup, Grand Marnier souffle...everything 💯✅️💯✅️💯! This will be my stop when I return to Dana Point!
If you’re looking for real French food with amazing sauces, this is your place. My compliments to le Chef. I felt like I was back in the south of France.
I had a lovely dinner there with family while I was visiting in Laguna Niguel. The restaurant still had their Christmas lights & decor up which made it very cozy & festive. My Chicken Picatta was divine as were the other menu items my group ordered. I am devastated that this restaurant will be demolished with the new development.
This is a true gem. It’s a small, family business. The food is absolutely amazing. The service is normally super, but on the rare occasion, it can be slow when too busy. Julian is a mainstay and at times a one man show; having been there for years; offering wonderful libations and service. Normally, it is pretty mellow and not a problem. The ambiance is special. I love it. GenXer’s, Millennials and Boomers alike will feel as if they stepped back to the 80’s. A hip, “happening” place it is not. Everything else about it obviates any need for scene!
We needed a spot to meet that was about halfway between Long Beach and San Diego. Dana Point is always nice, and I picked Gemmell's based on some of the comments. WOW... The outside of the restaurant isn't very impressive, but the meal was fantastic. I started with the escargots - the menu says it best - "Farm raised Helix snails, sautéed with garlic, shallots, mushrooms and diced ham, in a rich burgundy sauce". Outstanding - the snails were tasty, and the burgundy sauce with the finely diced pieces of ham, mushrooms, garlic, and shallots was amazing. It will be hard to go back to plain butter escargots after this. My wife had the Chef Byron's smoked salmon appetizer - lots of thinly-sliced salmon with capers, lemon, and toast points. I had a bite and it was very tasty. The toast points were very light and airy - almost like biting into foam. My sister and I also shared the pate canard - also with toast points and aspic. Delicious! For our salad course, I had the wilted spinach - baby spinach leaves in a flambeed bacon dressing. WOW - we all agreed that I won that round. The spinach and dressing was rich and flavorful. My wife had the lobster bisque and said it was the best she had tasted. I tasted it and agreed that it was truly rich and full of lobster flavor. My sister passed on the salad/soup course - saving room for dessert later. For our main courses, I had the scallops. From the menu - "Eastern Sea Scallops sautéed in Garlic champagne butter sauce, vegetables and rice". The garlic champagne butter sauce perfectly accented the scallops, and the rice gave a break to the richness of the scallops and sauce. My wife had the chicken crepe (chicken and mushrooms sauteed and wrapped in a crepe) and I think I will have that next time - it had a great flavor and texture. The crepe texture with the chicken and mushroom pieces was a perfect mix. My sister had the "Chicken Elizabeth" - from the menu - "Fresh Tender chicken breast sautéed with artichoke hearts, garlic and gulf shrimp, In a citrus chardonnay sauce vegetables and rice". Another winner. Finally, for dessert, my wife had the Creme Brulee - served in a large ramekin with artistically arranged strawberries and blueberries. Again, she raved about the flavor. I had the blueberry tart, and my sister had the Meyer lemon tart - both were delicious and not too heavy. Prices were quite reasonable (actually lower than we would have expected for the quality of the food and the presentation). We are already planning on coming back. Even though it is an hour's drive from our home in San Diego, it is definitely worth the trip. This may be one of the best French restaurants in Southern California.
this wonderful restaurant hosted my wife's birthday party. We couldn't ask for more beautiful environment. The staff were so accommodating. And the food was amazing. Will definitely be back and once again wanted to thank them for helping us create such a wonderful memory.
Went for dinner and had a great time at Gemell's. Beautiful restaurant and ambient atmosphere. Pleasant French music. Prices are great for a restaurant like this. Or food was FANTASTIC. We had a 4 course dinner for 2. My husband preferred potato leek soup and said it was the best soup he had ever eaten in the restaurant. I also liked a lot my cream of mushroom soup. The presentation of the dishes is very interesting and cute. Steak was well cooked and so was the fish. I was blown away by the presentation of the duck patte appetizer (see the photos).Dessert was fantastic and I loved my cappuccino! We will be back for sure.
Very good food nothing is over seasoned or too salty. Lunch portions are much bigger than expected and everything was cooked perfectly, down to the vegetables that are served. Prices are also very good considering it's located right next to the beach.
Fine dining by the Gemmells. No relation ;). A little on the spendy side but the meals were great. Quiet and intimate restaurant. We both had steaks; the Filet and New York. 10/10 would eat at again on date night. Not really for kids....
Absolutely great atmosphere for an intimate experience. If you miss this gem, you have missed one of best experiences of southern California.
We have been here many times. The French onion soup is the best, and the deserts are just amazing. . This time we came for a lovely birthday dinner. Thank all of you for making it special!
I loved the rack of lamb, had the escargot for an appetizers. Loved the experience
Don’t come hungry. The wait for a nice table ‘outside’ on a Sunday morning is long, but worth it! My eggs Benedict were bomb! Looking forward to trying more things next time. Side note: They also had the game on, for those of you sports fans 😎
It’s a place where time flows differently - you can just enjoy your food, music, company and forget to hurry up or stress out.

Our lunch today was excellent ! From freshly baked hot rolls, excellent Gruyere cheese French onion soup to our entrees -- baked salmon fillet and sliced pork sirloin with steamed vegetables (broccoli, carrots, squash & roast potatoes). They were cooked just right! The white wine was very good too. Waiting staff did a terrific job too. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and for sure will keep going back.
I love eating at Gemmell’s especially for dinner. The food is outstanding and the whole place is so calming and comforting. This is one of my first options to eat out with friends or family because of how great it is. The service is great especially when I get Kevin and Julian. They are such hard workers and are always so kind to me and family or friends. I can’t wait to go eat there again. I absolutely love their service and all the employees are so kind, loving, and helpful. The atmosphere is also great and I love all the decor and music there is, especially on Christmas and Halloween with all the beautiful decorations. I really recommend this place with all the great food, atmosphere, and service.
I've spent many years coming here, and honestly, this has become my favorite restaurant of all time. Learning that it will be closing by the end of the year fills me with deep sadness. I truly hope the owners are able to open a new location soon.
The restaurant had a nice and pleasant atmosphere. The cream of mushroom soup was delicious with a nice hint of black pepper cracked into it. Bread rolls were warm and just out of the oven . The calamari steak dish was nicely done with bare minimum oil. It was fresh and healthy. The angel hair pasta had a nice garlic flavor , I wish it was seasoned well. But for that , the whole dining experience was memorable.
I don’t write restaurant reviews. I’m finishing another angel hair pasta special on their lunch menu. Best pasta and value I’ve had in this area since I moved here a year ago. I highly recommend supporting this local gem (short for Gemmels!) as they navigate the harbor renovation issues.
Had some issues, otherwise could have been a 5 star. Beignets are NOT good, they are dense and cake like. Could not try the Lobster bisque as they were out of it. The main courses were exceptional as was the French onion soup. Prices are reasonable and portions good. Just don't go when they first open. They are unprepared for early visitors. Cheesecake was perfect and lemon tart was great.

The decor and atmosphere is enjoyable and french for sure. Service is a little on the slow side, but the food is tasty. The escargot appetizer was different and flavorful, although I enjoy a more traditional version (garlic butter & bread). There are several larger restaurants in the area, so it's nice to have a smaller and more intimate version. On a side note, not sure the sunset view as a decoration on the wall - not sure it worked for me - but, also makes the place "different".
Good meal! Four of us had the Poached Salmon, Pork Tenderloin, Duck, and Angel Hair with Scallops. Duck Pate was very good. Salmon and Angel Hair was a little under seasoned. Souffles were adequate. Service was good. Overall an enjoyable meal. We'll be back.
Not our usual neighborhood- but when a trip to the outlets turns out to be a bust, we make up for it with an early-in-the-week date night. We got to see Dana Harbor with the Christmas decorations and lights and boy what a treat. We chose Gemmell’s because of the decor and French-based menu. The restaurant was rather empty for being prime dinner time. It took a couple of minutes to get seated and overall I would say service was leisurely. We didn’t care we were enjoying the evening. The steak was good, but meaculpa ordered medium. I believe in no steak beyond medium rare, but for some reason, I messed up today. The sauce was really tasty and the softened peppercorns gave a good bite. Wine, creme brule, smoked salmon, and espresso are all good, but the runaway star was the Chicken Elizabeth that Wifey ordered. The chicken was super tender and what made French cuisine was the sauces. Enjoyed ourselves and gave into the moment.
The food was done to perfection. Never had 🦆 so perfectly! Cocktails top notch and my husband enjoyed the 2 sauces on the surf n turf.

We were meeting family halfway between San Diego and Marina Del Rey and this place looked good. I got Sand Dabs with vegetables, my wife got Cappelini alla Checca and the family shared the Calamari Steak. Everything was delicious and the portions are generous. The server was very friendly and helpful. There is a huge parking lot so parking is not an issue. The prices are typical for this quality of restaurant in this area.
If I could, I would have given this place a 3.5, but I can't and to give this place a 4* would have been a disservice to other 4* places. Food was very good. Our party of four had John Dory, Sand Dab, Pasta, and Crepe with Chicken. All the main dishes, as well as the appetizers were very well prepared with a traditional french flair (i.e. excellently paired sauces). It wasn't spectacular but I would be happy to come here again for their food. Unfortunately, the staff and the service left a lot to be desired. It took much too long to take our orders and unacceptably too long to bring the main course. This was not a case of intentional slow pace but that of an inattentive service overall. The main hall had 15 to 17 tables which were all occupied and the entire staff consisted of two Servers, a busser, a hostess, and a manager(?). And yet, there were too many occasions where I could not see any staff in the dining hall. Where did they all go? Considering that the bill comes out to be in the high 40's to low 50's per person, I expect better service. Finally, the one big positive is that the portions are surprisingly large. We all arrived really hungry and yet we all struggled to finish our main course.
The waiter was not welcoming or helpful. when we asked about the advertised happy hour offerings he was not happy and when we pressed for the menu it was clear that he did not want us to order from it vs full menu He stood over us and stared as we reviewed the wine list. this was my 65 birthday going to a place that we have greatly enjoyed before . This waiter was a problem
The food was just mediocre. We had the duck and the pork tenderloin. Steamed vegetable and potato were bland... no fresh herbs or seasonings were used. We were there many years ago and we were still talking about the delicious sauce that was served over the fish, that's why we went back. But this time, disappointed.
Decent meal but nothing amazing or out of ordinary and majorly lacking in any creativity or wow factor. Came here for the prix fix 4 course dinner for the living social deal. Was able to make a reservation very easily on opentable. Arrived and we stood at the door way for a while before the hostess acknowledged us. The restaurant was pretty empty on a weekend night which is usually not a good sign. We seated ourselves and got water and bread right away but did not get any menus. Waited for about 10min, was ignored and had to ask for menus. We made our dinner selections and our waitress just disappeared, never came back to check on us, just brought the food and came back to clear the plates. The whole service was very impersonal and lacking. The food was decent, mixed green salad wasn't very good, mushroom soup was very tasty. Both of our entrees were very tasty, sirloin steak was a good quality cut and cooked perfected, the fish had too much batter which took away from the fish even though the quality was superb. Both desserts were very good. Really expensive for what you get so probably would not come back.
We went to Gemmell's for lunch. The front of the restaurant is sunny and warm ( almost too warm...they didn't have the AC on) and we sat by a window. Service was slow and not very friendly. The room we sat in reminded me of a Tea Room. The back room is very dark and since it was a Sunny Summer day we didn't go there to sit. Our waiter was the only one we saw and there were at least eight other people in the room. Everyone waiting. The food was good but service was poor at best. Maybe someone didn't show up for work or they need to hire more people!
Decent atmosphere. Server was alone but the groups were manageable and he was prompt. Not so the cook, I presume. The food was simple and took as long as a decent steak dinner to arrive. Food? A plain steak sandwich, meh. More fat than meat and the meat needed a hack saw to cut. The onion soup was decent. Wine selection was as expected in this region. Probably won’t be back.
We wanted to give French cuisine a try and went to this place per recommendation - and food here was good. Server was friendly. Insanely slow service, probably because there was a single waiter in the whole place, also working as a host. As a result, we spent about 2 hours on lunch, which usually takes less than 1 hour in other places. Their patio roof leaks, rain actually dripped onto the table as we ate. Interior is pretty stuffy. The whole place smells like a retirement home would.
Extremely long dinner for one course on a Tuesday evening with half of the tables empty. Half hour to place a drink order. Server then used her hands to put ice in the glasses. The one glass of wine ordered had clearly been opened several days prior and tasted awful. Food was acceptable but nothing special. Surprised but my experience based on reviews and recommendations. Not my cup of tea, will not be returning.
We were trying to celebrate my daughter’s 16th birthday. Went on a recommendation but received the worst service I’ve ever experienced. Never received drink refills, cleared our on plates in a stack so she could open her gifts. 20-30 minutes after finishing dinner someone finally took our plates. Waited another 30 minutes for our dessert which never came. I was highly disappointed and will never recommend this restaurant to anyone.
My husband and I came here excited to try French cuisine. We showed up and the only person working there did not greet us and just looked over at us. We had to initiate conversation and ask if they were open and he said yes but to wait a few minutes. The place was dead so I’m not sure what we were waiting on. He didn’t offer to seat us or direct us to a table so it was a very awkward experience. After 15 minutes without him checking on us or acknowledging us we eventually left. I’ve never felt so unwelcome at a restaurant before. Sad because we wanted to try this place but I’d rather go somewhere more friendly.
I have been to this place several times before I went for lunch to take my mother out for her birthday, and the service was atrocious. The waiter did not seem like he even wanted to be there. He forgot things that we asked, for he seemed very confused. The restaurant was after lunch and it wasn’t very crowded. Maybe three tables the food I had onion soup was cold. The cheese wasn’t even melted my, main dish was cold as well. The chicken sandwiches and my mom ordered look like boiled chicken in the bread was old. I don’t think I’ll ever come back to this place I have in the past, but I would not recommend it to anyone. I don’t know how they can stay in business the server I’ve had before I think he has no interest. And his customers anymore and whoever’s in the kitchen is not well trained.
If I could give zero stars,I would. I had the escargot appetizer. Tasted like a canned beef gravy. My roasted duck was overcooked. My friend's shrimp dish had no flavor. We spent a lot of money there and couldn't wait to leave. This is a very expensive, tired restaurant that needs a new chef.
Service was okay. Long wait for our mains despite the restraunt being half full. Food was not great. Gemieli pasta tasted so sour and was inedible. We explained this to the server and owner. She said that is the flavour of the mustard (which does not maoe sense) and we ate too much of the dish for it to be fully comped. We have dined at many fine establishments around the world and this was disappointing.
