Food was great on my last visit. Parking was challenging during peak hours but that’s outside of the restaurant’s control. — We frequented the Plano location and glad to have them on Frisco. Overall the dishes were good. Some of them were a tad salty than I recall. During our visit the wait staff were severely understaffed but they did their best.
Late afternoon carryout to take back to hotel for dinner. It was excellent. This is not the local takeaway. This was a gourmet food prepared by a chef. It was authentic Hunan ( Xiang) cuisine flavor and presentation style but prepared for the American consumer. Traditionally spicy, I asked for it to be mild, unsure as to what to expect. The flavor profile was complex. As much work went into preparation as the cooking, if not more. They were NOT cheap, but the value-price ratio was definitely more than fair for the overwhelming quality. Two main dishes and spring rolls were $45 USD. That was enough to feed a family of 3 or perhaps 4. I will have leftovers for at least 2 meals.
Fanstastic and authentic hunan food. I have to say, the food I love and I don’t think I know of any other place in the area that can make hunan food like this. That said, service is just so so. I feel like I’ve been underimpressed or underwhelmed on multiple occasions of coming here with the service but I tolerate it because of the great food. They could clean the restaurant a little more too but I won’t be too hard on them about that. As far as hunan food though, I will keep returning here and I do think the food is great.
Run, Don’t Walk To Hunan Chef! “Oh my, God.” “Mmmm.” “That’s good.” “Wow.” These are the literal words that had a chance to escape our lips as we ate an absolutely delicious meal. 😋 Tip: 1) Everything is family style; 2) There are A LOT of options, so don’t get hung up on your selection because you will be back 😄. Atmosphere- When you walk in you smell something delicious in the air. You see a beautifully designed dining room with furniture that looks like real wooden artwork. You hear the sound of great music. 😌 Service- Excellent and above board. From the moment we walked in we were welcomed with a smile. Everyone was really kind from the woman (who we think may have been the chef or an owner) that walked us through the very extensive menu. She made recommendations, explained what was what and was patient. We ordered tea and soup in addition to the main meals and they served us when they arrived. They check in on us at the right times. 👏🏾🥰 Food- Excellent is an understatement. This food was good it touch my soul. This food reminds me of my grandmother’s cooking because clearly there is a sprinkle of love that gets added. I know that really cheesy, but I don’t care. This is the best food I’ve had in a very long time and we eat out often (maybe too often). Anyhoo, we had: 1) Braise fish cake w/ three delicacies; 2) Spicy, shrimp Hunan with style; 3)Eggplant w/ green bean; 4) Scallion pancake; 5) Jasmine green tea.🤩
All the dishes at Hunan Chef are balanced and all taste good as well. The service from the employees are always fast and are friendly. The atmosphere is family-friendly and is comfortable for everybody. Hunan Chef is overall a great restaurant and gives a great dining experience for everyone.
Food is absolutely top notch. This is authentic Hunan Chinese food and taste. Portions were XL size. Prices are a few dollars more than average Chinese mom and pop but definitely worth it for the quality, portion size and ambience. We came during mid afternoon and didn’t have any issues with service. Will be back and recommend to others. Photos were what was left over cause we couldn’t finish. The food is spicy even by asian standard. You should ask them to make it non spicy or less spicy if that is not your thing. They can benefit from having lunch specials like other restaurants
I really enjoyed this place! Food: Almost all the food is going to have hot chilli oil and peppers in some way or another. Not sure what others were expecting but it wasnt too oily or spicy. There's definitely other places around town that are way more oily. The twice cooked pork tasted great, similar to other places, this is usually my favorite dish. What sets this one apart is the included mushrooms that helped cut the oil and fats. However, I would want fewer mushrooms because I'd rather have more pork. The steamed pork belly bao dish were pretty salty but otherwise tasty, the bao buns helped cut the saltiness but there wasn't enough buns really. Boiled fish soup was good. We have several other things like a squid dish, shrimp dish, etc but overall, enjoyed each dish. I mean, not everything was my fav but I never expect to love everything at a place. Service: Typical service at Chinese restaurants? Not sure what others are expecting but if you've been at similar restaurants, it seemed fine? We had a group of 12ish and it worked out fine and had typical service. Price: Yeah a bit more pricey than some other similar restaurants further away but really everything in this emerging Asian food plaza area is more than usual just for the nature of the area. (Picture did not show everything we ordered) Edit for 2nd Visit: Came back for take out so will add new food items reviews plus more pictures. Spicy diced boneless chicken has become a favorite dish. It's crispy, not too bready, the chicken is very juicy, it has good spiciness. Will definitely be back for this. House special braised beef is alright. Not bad but I wasn't a fan. It came on a bed of noodles that were too soft for me. Maybe because it was a takeout item and the noodles were steaming in the bowl but I did not like the texture. Honestly would have preferred rice. The taste of the beef was good, I had thought it was just a meat dish and wish it was. Dry pot konjak with duck was flavorful but spicier than I was expecting! Spicier than the other dishes and I actually had to put out the fire in my mouth with boba milk tea from another store. The dish was full of spicy peppers of some sort, ginger, and other things. I really enjoy duck but the pieces were cut roughly so watch out for splintered bones. Overall pretty good. I know a few favorite dishes so I'm trying to expand my horizons and try different things on the menu, which is quite extensive.
This has become one of our favorite restaurant . So far whatever we ordered has turned out good . This time planned to get vegetarian food for myself and ordered tofu which was good . Portion size for main course are too good . When the bill came found it to be expensive but when opened the Togo box price was completely justified.
My partner and I stumbled into this place while shopping in the area and we are so happy that we did. The menu had a lot of dishes we weren’t familiar with and our waiter answered all our questions and was very friendly. We tried two different tofu dishes and an order of potstickers. Everything came out in good time, hot, and tasted delicious. We can’t wait to come back and try more of the dishes. Highly recommend this place!
So many choices on the menu and they all look delicious. Seems there are selections for both local Americans and authentic Chinese people. As in China, Hunan area is famous with hot spicy food (normally very dry hot, some different from the hot-pepper spicy in Szechuan/Sichuan province). Any pork belly dishes and fish soup won't go wrong.
Amazing authentic Chinese restaurant! Definitely in the top 3 of Chinese restaurants I have been to globally. This was our first visit here - everything we ordered was delicious. The service was attentive and kind. The decor was beautiful too - authentic Chinese wood carved furniture! The food warmed my soul, much needed after a really rough morning at work. We tried the Hunan stinky tofu, Typhoon Shelter Lotus Cake (deep fried battered lotus cakes), and the Hunan Hot & Sour Chicken Gizzards. Huge portions! We will definitely be back to try more of the expansive menu!
This is one of my favorite restaurants in DFW area. Every time I walked into it, the smell reminds me of my hometown. If you love spicy food, this will be your heaven. My favorite is the appetizer Chicken with Chili oil (口水鸡), dry pot tofu (家常豆腐), stir fried pork(小炒肉). The soup is also delicious. You can order just a cup for yourself. The staffs are really nice as well. Their homemade yogurt is delicious as well.
the most delicious, authentic chinese food in this plaza (saying this as a chinese person)! we got the stinky tofu, scallion pancakes, vegetable lo mein (you're telling me a vegetable lo'd this mein? very very good lo mein), and the heng yang noodles. all of them were absolutely amazing. definitely worth a try! :P
The food was Ah-mazingly authentic. We got sweet & sour pork & this Chef’s house special Fish with garlic. The only problem we had was the lovely was unable to recommend anything vegetarian for our friend… communication was tough… anyhoo…. That’s ok… the food is too good.
3rd time eating here. Ordered spicy beef and bean curd, my wife ordered fish filet with turnip . Loved the taste and atmosphere . Price very reasonable. Will definitely come back again soon.
I went here with my aunt, and the food was absolutely delicious! The servers were also very friendly and attentive. I would definitely come back and try more items on the menu since they do have a lot of options.
Everything we ordered was tasty, but the real standouts were the crispy boneless chicken and the spicy cabbage. Great flavors and definitely worth coming back for!
We love this restaurant. The food is delicious, big portions, and great service. The interior has nice decor too. We got the lo mein beef noodles and kung pao chicken. Can't wait to go back and try more dishes soon!
Drove for three hours to get to Dallas and couldn’t decide what to eat. Finally took a chance on Hunan cuisine — one of the hardest Chinese regional dishes to get right. Turned out to be quite satisfying; at least the stinky tofu was authentic, which is rare.
This is one of our new favorite spots, the menu is huge and we’ve loved everything that we ordered so far
We got here around 6pm on a Sunday and the place was packed. We got lucky and were seated immediately, but people that came after us had to wait. The food here is good and they definitely don’t hold back on the heat. If an entree has three chilis next to it you’re going to get something that’s fairly spicy. Everything we ordered tasted really good. I was happy to see Stink Tofu on the menu as not too many places serve that. I only wish that it were more pungent. The prices were slightly higher than similar restaurants in the area, but it was justified in how good everything was.
Such a gem, this restaurant offered authentic delicious food and amazing service. It was our first time here and with a big menu, but the waiter was patient and helped make recommendations. We came here during a storm and were soaked, and the host intently sat us away from the door and offered us hot water. The restaurant is beautifully decorated. We had the stinky tofu, the house special garlic fish fillet, and the pork with celery. All dishes were perfectly seasoned. At first, we felt it was a big overpriced, but once the food came out, the portions were huge. There'll be a second meal out of this. It was justified. They did not have the dessert we wanted, so we'll have to come back again!
Good: clean restaurant with Chinese decor like the rosewood tables and chairs. Waiters kept our water cups filled and they spoke English. Food was brought out promptly and the entire experience was paced well from asking whether we were ready to order to being asked whether we wanted boxes for leftovers and the check. The garlic chicken cubes were delicious with tons of yummy fried garlic. The pork belly with bun was tender and great portions size. We also had the scallion pancake, which were crispy yet a little chewy in the middle. To improve: more buns for the pork belly so that we can enjoy more pork belly buns. A bowl of rice is a $1 charge, which many Chinese restaurants are starting to charge. I wish that there could be a $3 giant bowl of rice to share with family for dishes that are traditionally eaten with rice, or include one bowl of rice with each entree that is normally eaten with rice.
Food tastes authentic and of good size . Strongly recommended !
Walked in on a whim on a Saturday afternoon. Got seated quickly. Lots of options to choose from. Food came out fresh and so tasty. I'm definitely coming back to try more. My friend had the sizzling squid and an order of dumplings and I had the pork belly which was so tender! Great place!
Absolutely amazing food! Every dish was super delicious, authentic Chinese (sichuan) and fresh! The fish in hot oil was absolutely amazing and a giant portion, with good quality fish and nice spice level. The fried rice and fried chicken were amazing! You can’t go wrong at this place, especially if you like tasty Chinese food.

Good restaurant! Delicious and authentic Hunan Chinese food. Nice service!
I think Hunan Chef has changed ownership or management lately. Their service and food have been totally different from before. Now their service is the best service I have experienced compared with other restaurants I dined in. Authentic Hunan style food. Warm, welcoming and cozy atmosphere. Big clean nice table was perfect for 7 dishes that we usually ordered. They even helped pack the leftover dishes for us to take to go when we checked out. Hunan Chef at Frisco is definitely a top notch Chinese restaurant.
This is our favorite Chinese restaurant in DFW. The food is so fresh and flavorful and the portions are generous. My Chinese husband says it’s very authentic. We especially love the water boiled fish, garlic eggplant and the spicy cabbage. The restaurant itself is very clean and has beautiful decor.

Nicely appointed place. Portions are large but prices are also higher than most. Food was prepared quickly and brought to table steaming hot and fresh, minutes are ordering. The léi làjiāo (Flavored Egg w/Eggplant & Pepper) not to be missed. The Hunan favourite ( House Special Cauliflower) is good but i have had better locally elsewhere.
July 2025 We need additional Chinese restaurants in this part of town. Healthy competition is great for consumers. Food is mediocre at best but attentive service and new decoration enhanced the experience. Whenever we visited a new restaurant, we would place some of the classic and traditional selection and Kung Pao Chicken was our choice. It tasted mediocre and too saucy. It shouldn’t be so much sauce and the sauce should be lightly coated with the dark meat. The beef noodle soup was also a very traditional dish in Hunan cooking. The beef broth was kind of bland. Frankly, I’m not sure I will return even though there are many enticing selection. Another reason for my hesitation, is the pricing of the order. It is pricy to estimate here. However, the restaurant looked clean and new. Servers were attentive and courteous. My rating as 5 is very satisfied Taste 3/5 Temperature 4/5 Cleanliness 5/5 Speed of service 5/5 Attentiveness and courteous 5/5 Will I return? Probably not since some better selection in Plano. Will I recommend? Yes. I think this is a good restaurant to try some Chinese food.
We decided to come here for a quick lunch since it was near a ranch 99 grocery store! It was a real treat! The flavor of both dishes that we order was outstanding! I had the beef lo mein, the noodles were just perfect and my husband had the stir fried tofu slices with pork, it was spicy! This tofu dish was very oily too! But good flavor! There were just 3 staff working but they were very efficient!
Great Chinese restaurant! Didn't try any Hunan cuisine this visit, but the food we did have was excellent. In general, their ingredients are fresh and cooked well. Their Sichuan Boiled Fish was delicious, tender, and nicely spicy. It also came in a ridiculously large bowl without being overpriced. I recommend keeping your rice separate to help balance out the rich flavor of this dish. Out of all the Chinese restaurants in Dallas I've been to that have snow pea leaves / shoots on the menu, which is already a green flag, this one had the best. Unfortunately, the beef fish we had wasn't great. It was rubbery. On a side note, the water tasted amazing. The restaurant was also sparkling clean.

We were in the market for a different venue for dinner and the restaurant got great reviews. Since we’re amateurs in authentic Chinese we asked for advice which they gave to us and decided to try suggestions. The entree presentations were mostly appealing. Happy clams w/pepper was excellent and this was our appetizer. The pork belly w/bun featured not my favorite flavor and our other entree which I’m including a picture was in our opinion almost burnt and tasted overcooked. This particular dish unnamed was not at all visually appealing. The staff were very pleasant and service was good. We might not have enjoyed all the food but we did enjoy the experience of trying something new.
We ordered egg rolls, orange chicken, steamed rice, sautéed string beans, and an order of soup dumplings. The egg rolls were ok; crispy, but not overly flavorful. They were served with what I believe to be a sweet and sour sauce (?) that was quite sweet, so it didn’t complement the egg rolls that well. The orange chicken dish had a decent flavor profile, combining a sweet and tangy orange sauce with crispy battered chicken. It tasted like average orange chicken. The sautéed string beans were probably our favorite dish with the right amount of flavor and a hint of spice. The soup dumplings were also a nice dish as well and were easily finished.
A group of us came here few years ago when it had high reviews, can’t remember what we had, just that we were so disappointed. Came back Christmas Day and was disappointed again. Food: Pork belly with buns was good. Vegetable was tough and Chuy., but I understand one can’t control the toughness pf vegs. two ordered a lobster we ordered was told around 3 lb, I asked but didn’t get a price, and it came out to be $125 at bill time. The price is ok as it was from live lobster, but it was too sweet and too much breading. The oyster had so much sand in it after just one bite from my partner, 9 tiny little pieces, I also tried, i told the waiter, and he said he’ll check… never got back to us.. after paying, I told a lady getting to go boxes for us the same, she took the dish away and gave us a a desert for free, when I asked how can she substitute $14 for a $24 dish, she pretended she doesn’t understand when I spoke her language. Anyway, this is a mediocre restaurant with fancy food at a great location.
we visited this past Saturday and ordered the "sizzling seafood egg tofu" dish. it was 90% tofu with barely any amount of seafood. very skimpy on the portion of seafood and was not worth it. felt like a rip off at $18. also when we originally walked in the waitress told us to sit at the table that was right next to the front door - Even though there were other tables available. it was also a very windy / chilly day and we did not want to be near the front door with the foot traffic coming in... so we moved to a different table that was closer towards the inside of the restaurant.. the waitress didn't appear happy then walked over and slammed the menus down on our table which was not very welcoming. The waiter who took our order was okay though.

There was very little topping in the rice noodles, but lots of pickles. The chicken offal was finely chopped, and could hardly find any. The chicken dry pot was delicious and authentic, but all the chucks had tiny bones. I will not order it again.
I want to be clear I genuinely enjoy the food here and have had good experiences at the Carrollton location, which is why this visit was so disappointing. This was my first time at this location, and the service was extremely poor. We were seated but never given menus, received no water refills, and had little to no service throughout the visit. Because of this, we paid and left. I chose not to leave a tip due to the lack of service. After checking my bank statement later, I saw that an 18% tip had been added without my consent. I had kept my receipt because I suspected this might happen. My advice to the restaurant: if you’re going to enforce or add gratuity, the service needs to meet at least a basic standard. It’s incredibly disappointing to see restaurants add tips automatically while failing to provide even minimal service to their customers.
Used to be good. Our experience in late 2025, it was understaffed for how busy it was (normally a good sign of quality). But the food was less than mid this time, declining quite a bit from past visits, so I hope it was just a bad day. With so many new options opening up, it would be a while before we would try again though.
The takeaway I ordered today, the pork liver was very fishy, and it didn't taste good at all. The pig's feet and chicken feet were different from before. They didn't taste good, and they were very small. The pig's feet were all bones. I have been here and eaten more than ten times. For the first time, I felt that it was not made by the same person.
We made a reservation for a group dinner of 12 and the restaurant called to confirm our reservation. However, when we arrived on time, we were told that they accepted another group ahead of us without notice and they had no table for us. They asked us to wait for 10-20 min for a new table to come out. THEY LIED. 12 of us have already waited in the front for an hour. We are still waiting in hunger. NO NEED TO RESERVE because THEY DON’T KEEP YOUR TABLE anyway. Think twice if you want to come for group dinner.
I came here at 1:11 PM, and it wasn’t very busy. However, no one gave us a menu or offered any drinks. My family and I were ignored many times. Meanwhile, other tables were warmly and enthusiastically greeted because they spoke Chinese? Maybe it was because I can’t speak Chinese, or because I’m not Chinese, but I clearly noticed a discriminatory attitude toward my family. Only one male staff member came to assist us, and even then, the service was not very attentive or friendly. Even though the food was average and the dining area was clean and airy, the service attitude completely ruined the experience. They didn’t check on us or make us feel welcome at all. I will never come back.
