The Last Real Refuge on Brand Blvd: Why Damon’s Pastrami is the King of Glendale Let’s just cut to the chase—the pastrami at Damon’s is ridiculously good. In a city like Los Angeles, where we treat smoked meat with the kind of reverence usually reserved for religious relics, that’s a dangerous thing to say. I’m a fan of the legends—Langer’s, The Hat, you name it—but I’m telling you, this is better. It’s a bold claim, but once you’ve sat in a booth under a thatched roof with a plate of this meat in front of you, you’ll understand. A Time Capsule of Tiki and Tradition Tucked away at 317 N Brand Blvd, Damon’s Steak House is a glorious, unashamed throwback. It’s been a Glendale fixture since 1937, and walking through those doors is like stepping into a mid-century fever dream. We’re talking full-tilt tiki: bamboo-lined walls, vibrant tropical murals of island life, and dim, amber-hued lanterns that make you feel like you’re hiding out from the world in a Polynesian hut. There is a soul to this place that you can’t manufacture. It’s in the giant, glowing salt-water fish tanks and the outrigger canoes hanging from the ceiling. The atmosphere is managed by a team that actually gives a damn; the service is exceptional and attentive, delivered by a staff decked out in floral Hawaiian Bermuda shirts that signal you’ve officially left the stress of the city at the door. It’s a masterclass in hospitality that invites you to order a Mai Tai in a ceramic tiki mug, forget what year it is, and settle in for a long, slow lunch. The Main Event: A Pastrami Masterpiece While they’ve built their name on "Thick Steaks and Tropical Drinks," the real secret weapon here is the pastrami. This isn’t just a sandwich; it’s an event. The meat is sliced perfectly—not too thin, not too thick—and piled high with a peppery bark that hits all the right notes. Most importantly, it is tender as hell—almost melt-in-your-mouth tender. It is a masterpiece of construction: loaded with melted Swiss cheese, tangy coleslaw, and a generous swipe of Russian dressing, all held together by warm, toasted rye. It’s a visceral, messy, beautiful thing. This isn't just about the sandwich, though; it’s the whole spread. It arrives with their signature chopped salad—a local legend in its own right—or a bowl of soup, alongside a mountain of crisp shoestring fries. Compared to the heavyweights across LA, Damon’s version has a specific kind of magic. It’s the underdog that shows up and knocks the champion out in the first round. Beyond the Sandwich The menu runs deep with those retro-steakhouse classics that satisfy a very specific kind of craving. You’ll find their famous garlic toast, thick-cut steaks, and the kind of salads that remind you why "old school" became a compliment in the first place. And of course, you cannot leave without exploring the bar. The drinks are cold, strong, and served with a garnish of pure nostalgia. The Verdict In a world that’s constantly trying to be "new" and "minimalist," Damon’s is a loud, colorful, and deliciously defiant reminder of what makes dining out great. It’s not just a meal; it’s a sanctuary. If you find yourself in Glendale and you haven't experienced this pastrami yet, you're doing it wrong. Go for the kitsch, stay for the meat, and thank me later.
Damon’s is a welcoming and charming restaurant, with a nostalgic feel! I love the classic tropical feel of the restaurant, and the staff is so friendly. Lots of seafood options, and delicious cocktails. The Mai Tai is a must! I enjoyed the Salmon with Smashed Potato, and salad. Lots of good options and if you’re unsure just ask for a recommendation. This is my second time here and can’t wait to come back!
I really liked Damon's! Good atmosphere and all the patrons seemed to be having a good time. There were also 3 birthday celebrations happening as I dined. Food was very good too!
This place is incredible. The dole whip tastes just like Disneyland! The drinks were spot on! You get a lot of food for the price and it is enjoyable. Definitely enough for leftovers. The decor is a huge plus, there is so much to look at.
Truly a place to visit! The decor was beautiful and historical with the murals and items around since 1937. With Trader Vic's and Don the Beachcomber gone, we hope this tropical themed gem sticks around. The food was very delicious! but the presentation did not match the ambiance or price. We were still happy with our experience. The hostess and manager were very kind. Definitely coming back when they get their tiki mugs in!
my family and i decided to randomly visit damon’s on a saturday. we had the best experience due to a lovely waitress named mary. it was my pre birthday dinner and she made me feel so special. her attitude was incredible and i felt like i was eating at a family member’s house. not to mention the food was great :) i highly recommend the twice baked potato and garlic bread! we will be back again ♥️
First time here. The vibe was great. The service was great, and hostess was very attentive (too bad I can't recall her name) came to celebrate a bday.
So, first time here, and they could tell I was nervous, because I didn't know what I was doing, but they totally had the laidback tiki vibe, and put me as ease. Brought me to a table immediately. Food may be more expensive than what I'm used to, but honestly, it's really good! Portions make up for it. Our server was really nice, and every suggestion she gave our table was on the spot! Definitely would come back if I get a chance.
The Mai Tais are fantastic! I didn't like the Rose Gimlet as much. They don't skimp on the coconut on the coconut shrimp which is great. Famous French bread is decent with good skiing of garlic, although not the best I've ever had. As many reviews mention, parking is a nightmare. My friend ended up sneaking into the Bank of America lot since we went at dinner and they're closed then, but park at your own risk! The staff are also all so friendly, from the hostesses to the bartenders. And we had gone on Valentine's Day, a day that's probably crazy busy and stressful for them. The decor has this sort of kitschy suburbs type vibe that we enjoyed. Love the seashell chandelier in the dining room and string lights at the bar.
Classic old school Tiki bar! And yet the Mahi Mahi was excellent! Snap peas with garlic is THE side to get. Mai Tais oh YES! Damon's or Trader Vics. How many places have you been to where a starter van star? Mushroom soup 🍲 with fresh large slices!
Affordable, delicious, and classic! We're obsessed with their house chopped salad that comes with your dinner (chopped romaine, celery, chives, beets and their secret dressing). The steak was cooked perfectly medium rare (as requested). My Husband and I were hungry but also not starving so we decided to split an entree (which was the Sirloin Coulette, came with the beloved salad and we ordered the twice baked potato as our other side) and it was the perfect amount for us to share. Love the Trader Vic's Mai Tai to pair with dinner. The restaurant is absolutely gorgeous and filled with vintage tiki decor.
It had been many many years since we have been to Damon's. We got there right at open. Which was nice. Food was fantastic. It is a lot of food. Drinks are amazing. Recommend Damon's Famous Chi Chi and Macadamia Nut Chi Chi. Service was fabulous. Environment is Polynesian Hawaiian decor. Tiki everywhere and we loved it. Everyone there was really nice. Will definitely be back.
Was delighted to discover this iconic restaurant while visiting the Museum of Neon Art down the street. There is a parking lot in the back that you pay by the hour. The Chi Chi drink and coconut shrimp appetizer were my favorite items. I loved the tropical theme decor. The staff was very nice and helpful. I would highly recommend this place to everyone.
Amazing experience and a definite step back in time. Cocktails were great, but also 70s era. Steak was fantastic. Will return.
After stumbling on Damon’s from a list of top restaurants in Glendale we have been super happy for n both of our visits to Damon’s. Michael is a great host who made all of us feel welcome and ensured to check on us throughout our visits. We enjoyed the potato skins , fried shrimp , and garlic bread to start the meal and washed it down with a few rounds of trader Vic mai tais. My wife enjoyed the salmon while I thoroughly enjoyed the New York which we were told is a crowd favorite. We are so happy this little place of history is here so close to the house and surely will be back regularly.
We stopped in for dinner and had a great time! I had the bbq brisket sandwich, and my boyfriend had fish and chips. For drinks I had a Trader Vic’s mai tai, and my bf had a skrewed up daiquiri, both of which were delicious! The staff were super friendly, especially our server. The decor inside was beautiful! The place has a great vibe! At the time we visited, there were two tiki mugs available for purchase. They appeared to the the same design in 2 different colors for about $46. Happy to add one of these beauties to my collection! We’ll be back! Thank you for such a wonderful time!
First time here, and I am a fan. The food is great and a great value! The garlic bread is a MUST!!! I want more already (btw, bring mints!!). Cocktails are well poured! Have the adult version of Disney’s Dole whip! We had the prime rib and a seasonal special bruschetta. With coconut shrimp appetizers. Everything came with a salad too! 😋
We’ve now lived in Glendale for 5 years and just made it to Damon’s for the first time and I wish we would have gone sooner. We had Damon’s mai tai, coconut shrimp, potato skins, garlic bread, cream of cauliflower soup, house salad, the brisket pulled pork combination platter, medium cut prime rib, twice baked, and Mac and cheese. Dessert was the Kona coffee ice cream cake. Everything was delicious and I’d likely reorder exactly that next time. The bill was very fair for what we received and portions were great so we had some leftovers.
Well established Steakhouse in my hometown of Glendale. I've been going here since I was a kid and the food is still just as good. Whether you're looking for a great steak, bbq or prime rib they have it all and more. Not to mention the desserts are amazing as well. Don't forget to try their garlic bread.
I recently moved to Glendale area and searched for the best steakhouse in the area. I quickly landed on Damon's and found the food and service to be outstanding. Over the next few weeks I ventured away and tried other places but always came back to Damon's. The staff including Gilbert, Preston, Connie, and Roxy are amazing and always make you feel welcome. The prime rib is the best in the area and their often special of pot roast is the best I ever had in my life.
First time here and the drinks were amazing! Some nice tiki inspired libations. Must try the coconut shrimp and any cocktail of your choice. Looking forward to exploring this place some more as I've been around but never came inside. The space is spacious, open, and nice on the inside.
A true neighborhood gem. Great food, service, and drinks. Even more incredible is the Tiki bar vibe. Come and enjoy.
Great classic restaurant. Portions are perfect and the ambiance is the best.
Great atmosphere and amazing food and even better service. Id come back. But also isn't the usual tiki bar I'm use too. Thought there would be more Polynesian food.
Solid spot that has been in Glendale for a long time. Great steak, awesome service, and surprising good BBQ. Make sure you get an order of garlic toast too. Blast from the past tiki vibe with delicious food and great staff!
32oz T-Bone was delicious. More importantly our server Mary was absolutely amazing. Super attentive and overall was the sweetest person. Highly highly recommend!
The tiki vibe was great, as well as the food! The steak with au jus was delicious, and it came out at the perfect temp we asked for. The garlic bread was not worth it, but the rest of the food and experence was good. Will definitely be going back
My parents went here when they started dating in 1948! I grew up going on special occassion and not a thing has change (the location back in the day)... same great food, service and atmosphere! A real treasure in downtown Glendale♥️
Fun place to spend an evening drinking a few sweet, but strong, cocktails. Service is great, as is the food. We usually get the coconut shrimp, pairs perfectly with a mai tai.
Damon’s is a dream! It has really great ambiance— you can tell it has been around and loved for a long time. Our server Mary couldn’t have been kinder, more knowledgeable or more attentive. The drinks and food were delicious and a great value. This is the kind of special place that has become increasingly rare. 10/10!
I love Damon's. I like the vibe, the staff are great, and they always knock it out of the park with the steaks and drinks. It's a fun local place and a must-try if you're in Glendale.
First time here, our server Ruben was amazing. 10/10 service and the food was delicious. Loved the garlic bread and potato wedges. The brisket and steak are the perfect combo!
Love the salad. Great service! I was there for my 80th birthday with my children and grandkids. Our server Mary was just wonderful! She is the reason I gave 5 stars. I would definitely recommend dinning at Damon's Steak House and hopefully you get Mary to help you.
January 2025: Met some friends here for dinner. First time at this restaurant. This made the list of Glendale's favorite restaurants. Started with a beer and tried Elysian hazy IPA. Was good. I liked the salad. Dressing tastes a little like the House of Prime Rib in San Francisco. Garlic bread was a little burnt and super chewy. Shared the rib eye steak 🥩. Was good. Came with a Side of spinach. I'd try something different next time. Service was friendly and attentive. Nice little spot that was super busy.
Food great. People working there nice. Smelled like a sewer as we walked in and smelled it the whole dinner. Steak was good but we got our of their as fast as we could. They need to fix the bad smell.
Okay, let's cut to the chase. Their steaks are amazing, have great flavor, and are cooked to perfection legit A. The oyster Rockerfellers, great give them a try if you like oysters. The pulled pork and brisket had a very unique BBQ sauce that paired well with the mac and cheese. The decor was awesome. Sorry, no photo. Service was a solid B. A local legion does yourself a favor.
Nice place. It's a huge space with very friendly staff. You need to walk through dining room to the hostess station by the bar. Unfortunately the prime rib was overcooked that day I was informed so I got the bone in NY and she got the ribeye both were excellent. She had Spinach and I had a salad which was amazing . Just a chopped salad with blue cheese and beets but literally I'm still thinking about that salad the next day. She had the pea soup and it was excellent. For appetizers we had the potato skins also tasty. We had some mai tais and chi chis which were not shy on the boos. All and all a nice steakhouse and a nice night
Extremely busy extremely expensive steakhouse. For over 40$ for a steak I would expect 3 sides and bread! Glad I didn't pay. We were constantly chasing someone down for some water or an extra fork etc.
The Staff was excellent, I enjoyed the Hawaiian theme. Service was quick and professional. We went on a Saturday during their lunch menu. There is a champagne brunch option but we opted not to do it. We ordered the potato skins as an appetizer for the table. I ordered the top sirloin cooked medium, with a side of steak fries. For a drink I ordered the chi chi. It was all very delicious. I would recommend.
First of all Damons has got rid of two of my favorite dishes, the steak salad and the Tahitian orange cake. The latter seems to be really missed by everyone including the hostess. But the service here is outstanding and the food is very good. I on a whim had stroganoff beef which was delicious and an excellent mango chicken salad. Both of these were not what I expected to get a Damon's in both of them were really good. But as far as the streak goes, it was the New York Frank state, and it was very good.. I do wish they had more tiki type things? Besides shrimp? But otherwise everything was good. I ordered the chocolate cake and it was like a mountain range, it was so enormous I couldn't believe it.
4.5🌟 Honestly, what a VIBE… a tiki themed steak house. You can go straight back to the bar if you’d like, and even order food there. I got the Caesar with grilled shrimp instead of chicken (perfect substitution), and the pot roast was really good.
What a disappointment. Took out of town relatives for what I thought was going to be a treat. Main complaint was the world famous mai tai. Not, repeat not the original! Premixed and watered down. I was willing to pay the high prices for food because the mai tai’s have always been the best in any island I’ve traveled to. Not anymore. $250, 4 people but until they get back to the original and not the pre mix, no thanks.
I enjoyed a nice Dinner out at Damon's. I had a truly delicious and perfectly cooked steak with a nice potato dish. They had generous proportions! The food was excellent, and the service was good.
Classic steakhouse in Glendale. Lots of choices from ribs to steak and so much more. Service is quite average. Rushed and inattentive. I’ve been here about 6 times in the last year. Love the menu, service could be better. Not allergy friendly. There are some gluten free motions but lack of knowledge causes major cross contamination.
Went here for a family members birthday dinner. I’m a vegetarian so my options are limited at steakhouses. The menu didn’t have any entrees without meat (totally understandable) but the specials did have a Parmesan and sage butter ravioli. Unfortunately felt like it was a bowl of butter, so I was overwhelmed after a few bites. The rest of the entrees ordered at the table looked good but the family said it was okay. However… the drinks and tiki vibes were great and would still recommend someone go here, even just for that.
Decor was fab. Food was ok. The fried calamari was tough and chewy. Chopped salad was good. Cream of corn soup was ok. Ribeye was overcooked medium rare. Salmon was good but too charred.
To me the food is only so-so. I could get the same steak at that Aussie Steakhouse and their famous bloomin onion lol. The bread isn't warm and the butter is cold so it doesn't spread. The portions are large though but still not worth the price to me. However their creamy Turkey soup special was AH-MAZE-ING. I wish I could have a gallon of it.
The food was awfully dry. The ground steak was raw and it tastedike old stored blood. The baked potato was so simple and tasted the same. Old fridge type of taste. I got toasted garlic bread as appetizers and I had to ask them to put them on the oven once more because it was all waterly and it tasted so bad and the last thing it had was parmesan cheese or garlic butter is truly disappointed to come here and expect each plate almost $40 and the food flavor is just something that they don't have also they don't have a fast waiter my waiter was taking forever he was so distracted it literally visited our table only once every 40 minutes and to be honest it was not good flavor. Do no recommend it. I only liked the soup. But is not worth it at all.
Thanks to the lady at the register who rushed my to go order, she walked away in the middle of my order as I was ordering, I couldn't see the menu, because it's very dim there. She started to write my order (rushy) when she walked away, I walked out. I spent a lot of money at this place & recommended to corporate clients. You were more worried about putting up birthday balloons. I got the message.
I just came from Thanksgiving Dinner. Of course I had the Turkey. It wasn't long before I noticed something "Different" about the Turkey. The meat hat a "rubbery" consistency about it. The thicker pieces were very noticable. I asked my waiter if this was Processed Turkey. He came back and told me the bag said it was "Turkey Breast". Yup. Sure enough. Not Real Turkey now is it. I couldn't believe it. This is the last Thanksgiving my Wife and I will Ever be there. We will come back when Damon's actually Cooks the Real Turkeys like they use to, instead of selling us Processed Turkey Breasts in a Bag.
