Been coming here for years. My late-Mother loved it too. From the current management, cooking staff, bussers and especially the wait staff (Courtney, Vanessa, Darla, Julianna and A.J. and all the rest, just awesome). It's always clean and welcoming. When I run across people who complain about Hayward not having any 'family friendly' restaurants, I immediately tell them about Black Bear and they thank me after eating there. DO NOT CHANGE!!!

Great food and service went there for breakfast and got the Bear's choice. This is a very good for customization and picking out what you like and a good pricing. Friendly staffing and a great place to take your family for breakfast just make sure you know you have time because sometimes the weights can be bad but nothing too horrible.

I really enjoy this place! It has rescued us many times for a last minute dinner when no one is open late or on the most important holiday's. Reliable menu with great choices for your mood.

We always have a great breakfast meal at the Black Bear Diner. On this outing we enjoyed the Shasta Scramble and the "Bear's Choice" mix and match breakfast. Both were excellent. The orange juice tasted fresh squeezed and our coffee was refilled regularly. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient. The Black Bear Diner offers lunch and dinner items as well, but we just can't get past the breakfast offerings on the menu when we are there.

So, we originally thought this place would be “ehh” but I had to use the bathroom and we were hungry. I was pretty surprised to see all of the outside seating and the employees were all so nice! The food was awesome and I have to say the habanero hot sauce was bomb! If you’re in the area, I’d say stop by. It’s definitely better than an IHOP, Denny’s etc. and the people were great.

Nice place to bring the family. Also, kids eat free from 4pm-9pm so that certainly helps! When we got our plates, I was surprised to see the pancake was shaped like a bear with eyes made of banana slices with chocolate chips, etc. (see picture). I've got two small children and the wait staff was really nice. After dinner, my toddler wanted to roam around and I walked with her. I like the diner experience and the food was particularly delicious. We'll definitely be coming back.

Another go to spot for good food. More people are beginning to dine in here, theres outdoor dining too. We had a nice night out. People are friendly and took care of us.

To be honest, the only reason that this place got a 4 is due to the fact that they didn't serve out the can corned beef hash. But with that being said the corned beef looked a couple of days old. I'm fully aware fresh corned beef would be a task and a half. At the very least when serving left overs, remove the parts that have dried out due to being under a heat lamp for an extended period of time. My eggs were over cooked and only at the tail end of my meal did someone come and ask if I needed more coffee. My cup was only empty for 15 minutes. Usually the service is grade AA. Not sure what happened today.

I think this is my second time here. The one thing that is improved is things were a lot less salty The salad is very fresh and that was a side dish too the chicken pot pie Really nice, I liked it a lot. It is not a big pie so if you come with a really big appetite I suggest getting another dish or maybe and additional side. My partner had I believe the pot rest which was pretty good too and she liked the veggies and everything. The only flaw was she had ordered corn muffin and it came kind of on the late side but that's okay. All in all plus an atmosphere. Even with a lot of people, there not too noisy because the design breaks up a lot of the sound.

He ordered medium well but it was well done with parts that were closer to medium. They where out of baked potatoes. Also they have a bizarre policy, according to our server, we aren't allowed to share the soda. If we shared one drink they would have changed us for two since it's free refills. My partner didn't even need a refill.

I’m a huge fan of Black Bear Diner—our go-to spot in Danville, CA—and I’ve enjoyed many locations, including Shasta. Unfortunately, the Hayward branch was a big letdown in taste, service, and cleanliness. Service was extremely slow—we waited 20 minutes just for water. The waffles were nearly burnt (though replaced), and the country potatoes had a bitter taste. The staff seemed careless and inattentive throughout. Not sure why this location falls so far behind others. Black Bear Diner, please show this branch some much-needed TLC.

It came well done and cold. Our server didn't even drop off the food and didn't return to the table until 10 minutes after the food had been placed. The next time she returned was to drop off the bill. I spent many years working in restaurants so I know exactly what happened. Nobody on that day gave him a damn. I ordered for delivery and my pancakes came burnt. I have emailed my feedback and tried calling to get a refund. It has been a week and no has tried to contact me. I'm not sure what happened, but this Black Bear Diner has recently gone downhill. Maybe a change in ownership or menu, but I've been going to this location for a few years and won't be going back after visiting last night. The menu is definitely different, with fewer options, and the food was disappointing for all six of my party. I had a burger that was less enjoyable than a quarter pounder from McDonald's, with some of the worst hash browns I've ever had. The rest of the meals were similarly disappointing for everyone, and the service was almost non-existent.

I placed an online order and it was a 20 minute drive, when I arrived the app said my order was ready. Terrible experience. I ordered a steak which took over 40 minutes for it just to arrive cold. I kindly told the server to remake it and specifically mentioned for it to be medium rare. She ended up giving me the same steak back this time well done. I even heard her telling the chef if it was actually medium rare which it clearly was not and the chef looked like he could not even care less. We were still nice enough to give her a tip but this place should really let go of chefs who are incompetent that can’t even properly cook a steak and clearly do not care about their customers.

And when we got our food it want until 15 minutes later someone asked if we wanted refills on our drinks which were empty for quite a while. Looking around us nobody had empty glasses. Everyone was getting their food and their drinks and we might just as well been invisible. That's the worst service I've ever received. Maybe that's not how it is all the time there, but that was my first and only experience there and it was enough to make me decide I'd never go back to that black bear diner again.

Food was not cooked well. There was more grease on my plate then I've ever seen coming from meat. The toast was overly dry, potatoes bland. Service was horrible and no they weren't busy. Very disappointing and disgusting... what happened black bear!

Terrible location. We walked in, stood at the front for over 15 min with multiple staff just staring at us. No acknowledgement. Come to find out there were 2 other parties ahead of us and we were going to have to wait longer. This would have been nice to know before we waited 15 min just standing there like idiots. Keep up the great customer service!! 👍👍

I would advise going to this place 4 or 5 am not getting good service this girl that works there is not nice. If you not happy working over night you don’t need to work there your lucky I gave you a tip that’s all your worth. The menu is very limited beer again

We came here for breakfast today and the service was terrible. Our hash brown and bacon was burnt and my waffle was also burnt and had it remade and it was undercooked. The icing on the cake is when we found hair on my sister’s French toast plate. What’s worst is, we tried to tell our waiter and he tried to play it off like it was from the eggs and my sister had to take the butter knife from the waiter and pull out the hair so he can see it. We immediately stopped eating and requested to speak to the manager. The waiter went to the back and came back and said the manager can’t come right now because he is busy but said we can get 50% off our meal. We proceeded to tell the waiter we are not paying for the food because there was hair on it and the waiter proceeded to say, it’s ok you guys don’t have to pay so you guys can leave. We ended up leaving but we really wanted to talk to the manager but was refused. Don’t recommend going here. Also the waiter was not very attentive to come by and check if we needed refills, we had to wave him down.

I had a very disappointing experience at Black Bear Diner recently, and it was largely due to the unacceptable behavior of the shift manager, Raymond. While sitting at one of the booths, I tried to plug in my wall charger and was shocked—literally—when the outlet sparked and shot out flames. My charger stopped working immediately. Concerned and hoping for at least a helpful or respectful response, I brought this to the attention of the manager. Instead of addressing the issue with basic courtesy, Raymond snapped at me with a rude and dismissive tone, saying, “We don’t advise you to use the outlets.” Nowhere in the diner is this posted, and other customers were using outlets just fine. Even if he truly couldn’t do anything to help, there’s no excuse for the attitude. A calm and respectful explanation would’ve been completely fine. But his negative tone and lack of empathy killed my mood and completely ruined my appetite. I canceled my order, paid for the drinks we had, and left. This kind of customer service is unacceptable—especially from someone in a managerial position. I won’t be returning, and I hope the company addresses both the safety issue and the behavior of its staff.

Kept telling everyone that came in 15 minutes wait but it was more like 45 minutes wait minimum. Don’t waste your time with this dishonest people and then the food takes another hour.

Another reminder of why we stopped going here years ago....the pictures are of a sandwich we were given to replace the first one. The first one was on different bread and about a quarter of the size as the one pictured. When the first sandwich was delivered, the person who ordered it asked if that was for a child, that's how small it was, comical in comparison to the large empty plate it was served on (was as big as the little round dish the coleslaw served in). The waiter then notified us that they ran out of the bread it's supposed to come on. Asked us if we want another half to the sandwich, which the three halves still equated to less than a half of normal size. The person said no, and almost changed their entire order (mind you everyone else at the table had already been served), when the server finally asked if we wanted the sandwich on sourdough - we were skeptical but he promised it'd be normal sized. Hesitantly, we agreed. The nerve the chef had to bring out the sandwich in the picture - not only was the cheese unmelted, there was tuna only in a small circle in the middle of the bread. You can clearly see how much bread in proportion to tuna, I took a bite and only tasted bread. After the waiter ignored us for the next 20 minutes (never coming around once to even refill our coffee), we finally were able to get his attention and asked for more tuna. He tried arguing that the amount of tuna present was the exact same amount that was in the first (very small, incorrectly made, and improperly offered substitutions in a timely manner). I argued with the waiter, that if he could please just bring us enough tuna to cover the bread, we'd be somewhat happy. On top of that, the country fried steak and country potatoes were also ruined by the chef, who chose to mix raw red onion and raw bell pepper in with the over cooked, soggy potatoes. If I wasn't in a rush, I would've demanded a manager, but even if our meal had been offered to be comped, I honestly will never go back to this black bear diner location in Hayward, Ca across from Chabot College. This experience has reoccurred each time we've tried to give them a chance for redemption. If they still can't get it right after all these years, I'll save my frustrations and money to go somewhere where the chefs actually take pride in their work, and floor staff care about the patrons. Maybe they need higher wages? Who knows. I give up on them! Even their eggs are overcooked. Best thing here is the free coffee refills

We came to the restaurant , and the hostess had an attitude from the beginning.. we asked to be seated Ina. quiet s criondue to my granddaughter having to do online school work.. so she seated us, and then left us .. never came back .no water nothing.. we sat there waiting...so I went to the front and asked if we had a server , she ignoredme and walked past me staring with a Dirty look...so I got my family and we left . it was bad service....and all we.eantwd to do was have a nice meal..we went to Denny's where we received excellent service.....

Very slow service we waited for almost hour for our meal. Do not come here hungry or else you will starved I ordered Caesar salad received garden salad but they give my caesar after I finish the other salad I ask for T-bone steak ‘rare came in well done hard as rock. I return it and they give me medium rare, Vegs all overcooked, mash potatoes are cold. Why served steak if you don’t know how to cook it. Mac Cheese took forever to served as well. I been to this restaurant twice first was bad service second was horrible never again.
