I’ve been coming here since the very early days … even forgetting for years at a time before once again becoming regular….and it’s remarkably consistent, naturally hospitable and perfectly charming. Its like the deep sea prize fish beneath the swarms of small school fish activity buzzing around what has now become Dimes Square.
This is a wonderful spot on the LES for a date night or a group meal. The restaurant is beautiful, with a very unique, rustic vibe. Everything we ate was amazing, in particular the cavatelli duck ragu and the spaghetti con vongole. The apps and desserts were spot on as well. Finally, the service was warm and attentive.A true NYC gem! We will definitely be back!
Excellent food and very friendly staff. Upstairs (ground floor) bar and one longvtable, downstairs in the basement is the main room with different tables. As an italian, I must admit: the food was hilarious. Wine very pricey (more than $20 for a glass of Amarone). But would go again, definitely!
We came across this restaurant accidentally and so happy we did! The service is fantastic and the wine is great. It feels like you’re in Italy. A must see hidden gem!
Charming, quaint European spot with delicious sharing plates and cocktail menu. This small hidden gem was perfect for catching up with friends post-pandemic in their cozy downstairs bar.
A cozy and inviting spot. Great for a romantic date. The wait staff is very friendly and attentive. The food is just incredible. Can't say enough good things.
This is a special place. Ideal for a group or a romantic dinner. Wonderful food on plates best shared. The restaurant is in the basement, with vaulted ceilings and atmosphere in abundance. I will be going back to Bacaro, time and time again...
I hate writing about this place because I don't want it discovered by a glut of tourists and loud NYU students but it's without a doubt The Tastiest Restaurants In The Whole East Side (by which I mean, East Village AND Lower East Side). Fortunately this place is off the beaten track. It's hard to find and hard to get to which is fine by me. The plates, especially those I mention here, are absolutely spectacular. A thousand times better than the tourist crap they serve in Little Italy. Let's start with the appertizers: most enjoy the fried zucchini blossoms which are great, but my personal favorite is the Insalata Di Granchio. As for the entree'.... I'm a diehard fan of the Tagliata Di Manzo. The steak is marinated four days in a special sauce and literally melts in your mouth. Also, get a side order of the Polenta- it's delicate; made with a parmigiano & butter-base that's truly delicious. All the pasta dishes are to-die-for. (These are very nuanced dishes and are unlike any pasta dishes you've ever eaten, trust me!) My favorite is the Duck Raga. The Spaghetti Nero is a close second. You can't lose with this place, and I've been to almost every restaurant below 14 Street.
Interesting decor, small upstairs bar area with a full bar & restaurant downstairs. Vintage doors & hardware with 3 dining areas. I'm not sure about handicapped access. The food was delicious. We were there for a wedding and family style service was perfect! Wine and water glasses were continually filled.
I had a great solo birthday dinner here a few weeks ago. The cave part of the restaurant is really cool & the staff was very nice and kind. Even when I set my bread basket on fire from the small tea candle on the table (wish I was joking), they were still really nice! Try the meatball appetizer!
Super tasty. We had the gnocchi, ragu, and sole which were all amazing. The service was excellent and the atmosphere was vibrant. Prices were very fair. Went on a weeknight at 9p without a reservation and was seated immediately.
Ana was amazing in coordinating our special dinner. Great service & ambiance in the cellar! Linguine with clams, gnocchi & eggplant parm were the best. Thank you for a special night!
Hidden gem in Chinatown! Bacaro literally transports you to Venice with an atmosphere that is cozy, romantic, rustic and sexy rolled into one. Better yet, from the greeter to table side service, the hospitality was first in class, genuine and unobtrusive. They took the greatest care to ensure our experience was memorable. Now, as far as the food, simply delectable. From the quality, flavors to presentation, Bacaro certainly exceeded our expectations. Kudos to the chef and entire team for an amazing culinary journey!
Came to Bacaros for the first time to see the band Jack of Clubs. The restaurant was full and for good reasons. Great menu with nice selection of appetizers. The food was served quickly and it was delicious!!!! The staff was very friendly and attentive. Will definitely go back.
Very cozy and intimate atmosphere. Food was absolutely excellent. Service was knowledgeable and reasonably attentive, although my party of six was noticeably rushed in order to turn the table. It should be noted however that the manager did, very kindly, offer to buy us a drink at the bar in order to accommodate the next party.
Did my research before going here and could not be happier! They were very busy the night we went so we chose to eat at the bar instead of a table and very glad we did! The bartender was extremely helpful, funny, and engaging. We ate way too much! The soup was amazing and the appetizers were spot on. Definitely not a quiet place, but as long as you know what you want, that's ok. Will definitely be returning the next time we are in NYC!
The atmosphere is great and the service is very good. But I don't know if it was due to cultural differences, but the food was not very good. It's probably not a cuisine that suits my taste, but you can go there for drinks.
I've been going here for what feels like a decade. The food is good, sometimes great, sometimes whatever. But it's just such a charming place to spend an evening - I call it the girl magnet. Lately the wine has been getting better and better too. Bacaro is always a good call. Also, if you just have to hang out on Division St., it's way better than Kiki's - don't listen to the hipsters.
Quaint, cozy place with great food, drinks, and service. We made a reservation and the only available option was outdoor seating. It was about 35 degrees and they had heaters but it was still chilly. The hostess quickly grabbed us once spots opened at the bar, and we enjoyed a great meal there. The bartender was very friendly and attentive. This is a great date night option.
I’d been here once years ago for a private party in the downstairs but had never been for a meal. Wow was I missing out. Was able to snag a last minute table upstairs (fully accessible) and when I say every bite was better than the last, I mean it. From the happy hour special crostini appetizers to the meatballs and salad apps to the main steak, it was foodgasms all night. Special bonus to the delicious wine that also flowed with each course. I was so focused on the delicious food, ambiance and conversation that I didn’t take any pictures except of my main. Shoutout to the server who kept topping off our wine free of charge.
A place with lots of character. Authentic and delicious Italian food in a very cool underground setting. The cicchetti and pasta are excellent. Very attentive service. Highly recommended for a unique experience!
Cute little spot between Kiki's and Forgetmenot that we discovered while waiting in line. Waiters were quick and wore masks the entire time, and menu can be pulled up via QR code on that is taped to the table. We tried the tequila cocktail and bourbon cocktail. We didn't order food but noticed a lot of other tables who were enjoying meals. Great place to grab drinks - the street is lively and always packed in the evening!
To start the atmosphere is awesome. We sat in the basement and it was very cozy and unique. The service was amazing. The wine was all Italian. She got the chicken and it was crispy and lovely, she also got the potatoes, again, lovely and perfectly cooked. I got the mussels as an app and the sole filet with broccoli. The broccoli was the highlight for me as its prep was perfect. We got deserts which we normally don’t do, she had the lemon sorbet and again, excellent, I got panna cota, excellent. If I had a complaint, the music was eclectic and sometimes a little loud and just jumped genres a bit much…if I had to complain. But I’m giving this 5 stars.
I have been here multiple times but only ordered one dish: the squid ink spaghetti, it is the closest thing to the one in Venice. It was delicious. Will definitely come back for more. :)
Love this spot. A favorite for dinner with friends. Food is so good and people are lovely.
Amazing atmosphere! So romantic and peaceful. Went for Valentine’s Day and my girlfriend was blown away. Slightly limited menu but the food and drinks were amazing.
During a recent snowstorm we visited Bacaro as it was open for business as usual when others were closed. It still represents, even after 20 years, the best of NY. The Food, atmosphere and Service are what made me fall in love with NY and the LES 30 years ago. This place was magical that night. You feel like you're part of a community. People are local, and wonderful. We were even asked to join a birthday party downstairs. Sadly these places are now rare in NY. This is a treasure, go and treat yourself and savor the true NY. Fabulous
Cute ambiance! Great funky-chill background music… Love the style, awesome little spot : ) . Especially the downstairs “cave-like / wine-cellar”; Appetizers were great! The only thing I was disappointed in was the garlic shrimp and polenta entree. Polenta was delicious however a little TOO MUCH garlic and the shrimp were small, dry and bland. The Gnocchi Pomodoro was excellent, the linguine con vongole was on point! Will definitely be back.
Hosted our wedding rehearsal dinner here. Food was great, the basement is beautiful too. Family loved the food and the severs were really nice. Would highly recommend for dinner or an event!
Absolutely wonderful. Elise & the rest of the team took care of us so well. Extensive Northern-Italian wine list. Pointed us to a Nebbiolo which was fantastic. The pea salad was an unexpected standout! Also fantastic & fresh fried zucchini blossoms, amazing pastas. The mushroom gnocchi was amazing. Great selection of amari was perfect way to end the night. Highly recommend the place -- you descend into the basement and suddenly it's a maze of candlelit alcoves oozing with charm and romance.
This is one of the best Italian restaurants in the city. The food is fantastic. The fritto misto is a hit, and the eggplant parm is excellent. The salads are always fresh. Everything on the menu is good. The service has always been wonderful to me and my family. It’s a blessing to have a restaurant this good nearby. Many surrounding restaurants have wine lists that are heavily, if not entirely, focused on natural and organic wines. These are great for people who enjoy stemmy, funky, and fizzy wines. Bacaro, however, offers an extensive list of classic Italian wines, which is a nice change from the natural wine trend that has taken over the Lower East Side.
Walked in with a party of 5 without a reservation on a Saturday night and of course there was only outdoor seating available. It was chilly but the space heaters worked well so we were comfortable. The waitress that served us was attentive and welcoming. We had no idea what to expect of the food but all of the dishes were tasty and satisfying. I’m pretty picky when it comes to fried calamari but I quite enjoyed their fritto misto antipasti and would happily order it again! My only critique would be for the bacalao with polenta that was flavorful but just way too salty. Special props for the fact that the bathroom inside was super clean and featured a large vase of fresh lilies! Just shows that the owners/managers care about the details!
I came here for my friend’s birthday. They have large tables that are great for groups. Also the layout of the place allows for privacy for groups. The design of the space was very inviting, it had exposed brick and gave out wine cellar vibes. We shared salads and rice balls and got a pasta entree each. The salad was 4/5, rice balls 5/5, seafood spaghetti 4.5/5. We also got tiramisu at the end and the texture was different from the ones I’ve had before. It felt like they have leaned into the cream cheese and butter. I liked that it wasn’t too sweet. Overall, I would recommend this restaurant to friends.
The squid ink pasta was terrific. So was the tagliata steak. The greens—broccoli rabe E and, we were told by people dining next to us, the asparagus–were less good but still not bad at all. The wait staff were really nice too.
Fantastic old-stone basement environment, solid food, stellar desserts. Service was a bit confused, though. Ordering was strained, oddly and needlessly fragmented -- when a guest is ordering drinks, stay until he/she is done. Overall, very good and with potential to improve with tweaks.
Really cool restaurant - feels very rustic and authentic. The food was delicious but small portions for the price. They have a GF pasta option available as well as a lot of polenta on the menu!
The downstairs at bacaro is sooo romantic and cozy. The pastas are great (the cavatelli duck ragu is delicious). The service there was seamless for the area. Honestly the place is quite the gem
We kind of stumbled onto Bacaro wandering along Division St looking for something to eat. On a cold night we wanted something comforting and Italian sounded good. The sub terrain dining area feels like a cozy wine vault and softly lit candle light but still bright enough to read the menu. We had an early dinner so the choice of tables was our to chose. It filled up a bit late as dinner time came. Our server was friendly and recited the daily specials. The food came out at a reasonable time not too long and not too quickly. They seem to like their polenta there. I guess nothing says Italian like polenta? We started with the Insalata di Granchio over you guessed it polenta. The crab was delicate and fresh as the salad. The polenta was more of a congealed mush but wasn’t bad. The beet tips sautéed with garlic was a good accompany with the whole wheat pasta in rabbit ragu and the beef shank on top of a creamy polenta! While I don’t remember if the whole wheat pasta was housemade or not but it was cooked al dente. The rabbit ragu was well seasoned. The beef shank was tender and meat fall of the bone. The polenta was nice and creamy. I can’t imagine who many stick of butter went into this but I just won’t think about it. Bacaro was a good dinner in a quite setting. The service was good and out water always filled when needed. It would be a good date dinner night with food that is solidly good.
Like many good eateries in Venice, this Venetian restaurant is hidden on an unassuming street in Chinatown. The rustic decor and warm lighting made me feel at ease, and the gnoccheti I ordered had just the right amount of chewiness, although it was slightly heavier on the sodium for my personal taste. The panna cotta was very thick and solid...quite substantial. I'd go back to try other items on the menu. There are several large tables (one in a semi-tucked away nook), so this would make a decent place for group dining as well.
I've been here twice, first time downstairs in the dining room and the food was pretty mediocre (had fried zucchini blossoms which were heavy and a spaghetti pomodoro that tasted like canned stewed tomatoes) Second time was MUCH better I was upstairs in the bar - food was very good. Enjoyed the duck ragu and tiramisu. Wait staff were attentive but not exactly friendly. Music was great but it was so loud you couldn't hear across a (quite small) table.
Went there with a group of 10. Great place for group dining. Many large tables are available in the cellar. The food is both good and well priced. The fried zucchini blossoms and the stuffed artichoke were delicious. So was the duck ragu pasta. Service was a bit slow.
Awesome food, great space & service. Had pork shank, fried zucchini blossom stuffed w/ goat cheese, spaghetti Nero - which was all wonderful. The wine selection is vast and the service is really great. Recommend for intimate gatherings or date nights!!
The ricotta cavatelli with duck ragu was delicious. Really enjoyed the apps as well, especially the beans and the meatballs. However, they only offered spaghetti for the 4 year old in our group, even though my dish had pasta that would have been easier for a child to manage.
Lil' hidden Italian gem in the heart of Chinatown. Great atmosphere and really good food. Better as a great wine bar with o'bdouves so don't expect big portions. Small, quiet, cozy, romantic snd tasty are five best descriptors one should use in an accurate review - enjoy!
The pork shank literally melted in my mouth. It was incredible. The ice cream was top quality, I especially liked the pistachio. I went here in the summer but this is a cozy basement restaurant, so I’m assuming a winter meal here would be even better.
Visited with 11 people, service and atmosphere were excellent. The dining area was underground in a converted basement that felt like a trendy catacomb; complete with retro candlelight chandelier. The food was very good; the gnocchi with mushrooms was the highlight for me, the beef was tender and perfectly cooked, the pork shank fell off the bone. The flavors of the protiens were subtle, I would have preferred a flavorful side sauce to complement them. I enjoyed all the deserts that were shared by the table; cinnamon rice pudding (very light and subtle, I liked it, others in my group disliked), tiramisu was fresh and light, chocolate cake was very rich and delicious, panacotta was fresh and light, too.
Food and service were awesome. Authentic Venetian food. Went with family early Sunday evening so we expected it to be sleepy but the basement eating area felt a little empty and dark. There was one other table there and it felt a bit like we were eating together.
Bacaro serves exceptional food that truly shines - every dish was delicious and beautifully prepared. While the service and atmosphere are just average, the quality of the cuisine alone makes this worth visiting. Come for the food and you won't be disappointed!
Overall rating: 4.5 Super popular Italian place that seems to be best for group of friends or a date. Very tight on the main floor, but the bottom floor seems super romantic I went with a group of 6 and the underground feeling transported me. I had the duck cavatelli and it was good. But was it $$$ good. Eh. I’ve had better. The service was also a tad rough. They were very busy and it was hard to order, get a drink and close out. Not sure if this is the place for me.
We were sat outside without the heater even though it was a 'warmer' day but we were chiveriling the entire time, fair, cuz we opt in due to our first choice had to wait an hr. Anyways, Spaghetti Nero was so good, a must try, and also the steak even though they were a bit cold by the time served and a bit too salty for us. Fritto portion is divided into 5% of shrimp, 5% of calamari and 90% of olives n others, cant complain cuz it tastes good just you know and right portion as an appetizer for two. The potates are crispy and steaks taste good but are bit too salty for us again. Honestly, dine outdoor in cooler weather isnt ideal for people who enjoy food as an experience rather than just filling up an empty stomach or spending time with friends. Actually would go again but will ask to use less salt next time😅
Come to Bacaro for its truly unique ambiance, replete with exposed bricks, candlelit lighting, and a maze of dining nooks that are reminiscent of a speakeasy. The food and drink options are great, but the service needs some work. For appetizers, we ordered the Zucchini Blossoms (good, but a tad bland), the Green bean salad (flavorful and refreshing), Fritto Misto (interesting mix of calamari and shrimp), Spaghetti Nero (very fascinating), Garlic Shrimp over Polenta (quite good but wasn't amazing), Eggplant Marinara (quite tasty and flavorful), and the Tiramisu (was straight out of the refrigerator, felt a bit firm). All in all, the food was quite good but lacked the wow factor. The service needs some improvement - I recognize that it was a busy night, but the interactions could have been better (their response to our question about the specials could have been handled better - they didn't have any, but the way they responded was odd, they brought out our entrees while we were still working on appetizers and the small tables couldn't accommodate all the plates). Nonetheless, Bacaro gets a lot of things right, and there is potential for it to be a truly special dining experience.
This is one of my go-to Italian places in NYC. The atmosphere of the dining area in the cellar is lowkey and romantic. Service is always exceptional too. The only thing that I would imrpove is the food. Don't get me wrong; it's great and one of better Italian food places you can go to in NYC, but for example, the gnocchi I had are too hard and better for fried gnocchi dishes. That said, the desserts are always perfect and our personal highlight.
Great basement restaurant with good Italian food. The basement was inviting and cozy, and the staff was welcoming. The food was good, but nothing remarkable. The spaghetti nero was salty and a bit of a one note. The cavatelli with duck were much more interesting, and I would recommend it. The fried zucchini blossoms with ricotta were decadent, and I also enjoyed it. The gelato on the other hand tasted store bought, rather flavorless, and I was rather disappointed seeing how other reviews praised the dessert.
Had dinner here last week. Very pretty restaurant with two floors, though main dining is downstairs. The food was fine, except for the broccoli rabe which was way over cooked. The staff was superior and immediately said they would cook up another batch or take it off the bill. The dessert on the other hand was excellent!!
A great dinner date or group spot. I was there toasting a birthday but there were several groups that visited. It’s an unexpected location because you are seated downstairs and you pass Canal Street. The food is good - steak and duck ragu. I’d prefer the noodles for duck to be wider but the flavor was good as is.
You're paying for the atmosphere (which was really wonderful) not the food, quite mediocre. Very nice people but once again the food isn't anything to phone home about. If you've never had italian food come here.
We were here for a 9 ppl birthday dinner party on Saturday night, but the service was so bad. We waited for half an hour to order food and need to wait servers for 20mins. Cake fee is $3 per person/wine open is $4 per person but no one helps to serve us (we keep asking but no one comes, so we open ourselves) The manger gave us 20% off after complaining, but hope they can get more staffs especially when you charge 20% tips for large groups
Bacaro has the potential to be the go-to Italian restaurant on my list on this side of the city, but the food falls a bit short. Echoing what everyone else has said, the atmosphere is brilliant, whether it's for a date night, group event, or whatever else. The downstairs "dungeon" is fantastic and the bigger tables are in their own little caverns. The service is fine - it just takes some warming up to get the conversation going, otherwise yeah, I can tell some people might feel a little put off. The service is also fairly slow, but honestly in this environment of a restaurant you really shouldn't be rushing anyways. As far as the food goes, I ordered the pork shank for my main. The portion is definitely plentiful, however it wasn't a particularly "moriesh" dish. It was tender enough but I felt like it wasn't really braised in anything flavorful. There is a lot of fat on the cut which was fine by me (because that's the only thing that gave it flavor) but I can see why others wouldn't be too excited if they aren't comfortable eating the fat. The polenta it was served on was fine but there were only two or three little tomatoes - I wish there were 3-4x as many to help cut down the richness of the fat. The appetizers really weren't anything to write home about. The mozzarella and tomato dish was very simple and wasn't served with any olive oil or seasoning so you're left to your own devices there. The fried calamari was just spongy batter with hardly any seafood. The meatballs did actually taste quite good but as others have pointed out, they are very, very small and it really isn't worth sharing them. The drink menu is solid and prices for both cocktails and wine are good, although some of the others felt their mixed cocktails on the rocks were just fine, so I'd suggest sticking with the wine or spirit-forward ones I'll definitely look forward to coming back down the road, trying some pasta and seeing if anything has changed - I just hope they don't get complacent and rely on the ambiance to continue bringing traffic in.
Over hyper and over priced. The last straw was automatic gratuity because service did not deserve that. Poor wine service, slow service overall and cold maître d'. Many dishes sold out which could mean they're popular or they don't know how to plan ahead. Best dish was Nero spaghetti but still needs a protine.
Food was very good, especially the spaghetti nero. The service left something to be desired. Main complaint is that we ordered several dishes to share and instead of coming out as courses everything came to the table at once instead of one at a time. This completely overwhelmed the space on our small table (without clearing the bread and plates!) and made it difficult to share as intended.
Food was very good, and ambiance nice - but bizarrely they served our main course just minutes after serving the first course. We were not finished with the first course and the second course got cold. Plus there were plates all over the place. Very strange particularly for an Italian restaurant. The waiters were attentive but perhaps too attentive trying to clear the table too soon as well. Seems like these are easy things to correct.
My girlfriend and made reservations for a Saturday night dinner at Bacaro to celebrate our anniversary. Their main dining room is in the basement and it is rather small. We were seated no more than 18 inches from another couple which really ruined the atmosphere. The space is cramped and it was so loud we could barely hear each other. The food was good overall however we found a hair in one dish and they did not automatically compensate us which was frustrating. The service was overall ok. With so many Italian restaurant in the City, I don't anticipate returning.
Food was alright—the pasta itself was good but I would’ve preferred larger portion sizes. The bread and olive oil was served cold, which was disappointing. We got the panna cotta for dessert, and that was incredibly bland. Service was okay.
service was fine food was just ridiculously lazy broccoli was floating in its own oil, salad is just a pile of leaves chicken millenese was decent and the only thing edible, but you’re in the neighborhood so idk if the foods why you’re here
Don't understand the good reviews. If you're a 'foodie', don't bother. It's average. Also, the staff member we had was extremely rude and grumpy. & There was a hair in one of our mains.
It's alright. The drinks are good but they're also ~$15 so they should be. We ordered the meat and cheese plate, which for +$20 was plated the same way you'd plate $6 worth of cold cuts at home. Decent bread, but it's bread and it wasn't served warm. For main I had an ink pasta. Which was one dimensional, salty with no balance. Honestly seemed like they just wanted me to get excited over black pasta and there was no reason I'd rather eat that than a spaghetti marinara. Lot to be desired especially for the high price tag. If the restaurant wonders why I didn't mention any of this while I was there, the most honest answer is that for around $60 a person for main, shared app and cocktail I should just be able to come and enjoy. It would've been too much work to have a retry. I think there's much better Italian food in the city.
Had a very rude waitress (pink hair), she came to the table slammed the water glasses down and was visibly angry to be serving our party. Also charged us for more drinks then we ordered and would not adjust the check at the end. Overall, the food was good and the scene was nice but the attitude on the server was too much
Came here for a birthday with a party of 12. We started off with a meat/cheese platter - pretty standard. Then we ordered some of the razor clams, which were pretty good. For my entree, I had the steak, which was overcooked and a bit bland. Plus it took forever for the food to come out. Not worth the high price tag for mediocre food.
I didn't quite like this place. Food wasn't tasty and honestly wasn't impressed. The servers were nice, cordial and helpful. I came out of the restaurant a bit dissatisfed about my overall experience. Also note that gratuity is automatically added to bill for group dining, I'm not sure if this applies to 1-person dine in. I had the indoor, basement style dinner. Overall just a 2-star experience
Very overpriced: small portions and average quality. The restaurant offers Anerican spinoffs of some Venice traditional dishes. The Italian names on the menu are bad Google translations. The only highlight was the ambience.
This place is a JOKE!!! My “chicken Milanese” was literally a breaded chicken cutlet you get at the bodega with wilted mixed greens on top and a side of mayo. No effort at all
Complaint Letter to party planner: I am writing to let you know how disappointed we were with the overall experience at Bacaro last saturday 7/17/2021. This was a repeat of a celebration we had there about 4 years ago. What a difference time makes! While the food was good, the service was poor and unfocused. There really is no excuse for this. It started with your confusing text message saying we had only 90 minutes at the table (incorrect). I found a hostess to confirm that we indeed had more time as a special party. Our table was only partially set (five sets of cutlery instead of seven). The appetizers came out and dropped on a very crowded table with no explanation or warmth. Plates were cleared and as the last main came out (again just dropped on table), we still did not have clean plates to eat. As the food was cooling, plates finally came. Coffee was also served with no spoons, cream and sugar on table. I do not blame Ethan, our server. He was clearly in over his head and doing the best he could. I blame you, Ana, and the management at Bacaro. This special event was know and planned. I expected more from a $1000 meal. You knew the number of people in our party in advance. We were a special event in a private room and expected to be treated as such. It is amazing how these cumulative serving errors and inattention colored the overall experience despite the adequate food. After complaining to Manager, she said they were short on staff and even suggested if I wanted to work there due to that issue, completely inappropriate and rude. I will no longer recommend Bacaro to friends and family and I will certainly no longer book special events here. Extremely disappointed. Santiago
when i walked in asking for seating, whoever was hosting last night around 930pm told me there was only availability outside. i waited for my friend, who is white, to come, and told her what happened. i then asked my friend if she could go in alone and ask. we were then offered an amazing table downstairs.
Not worth the hype or the travel... For starters, our waitress was terrible, she never offered us the specials until we received our starters, her attentiveness... lets put it this way, the bus boy gave us better service then she did which is why we tipped him over the waitress. When you order 2 bottles of wine and don't get to taste the second bottle especially when they aren't cheap bottles of wine really showed her experience. She never once asked us how any of our meals were, my pasta with the duck meat was terrible. Pasta was under cooked to the point that it was sticking to my teeth, my friend had the asparagus risotto and it was so bitter we thought it was raw. She took the plates that were still full and didn't ask if anything was wrong. For NYC prices and the lack of service i won't be back.
i spent almost 200$ for very disappointing italian food, but nothing compared to how bad the service was, she almost knocked over my wine twice/didn’t apologize, never told me her name or answer my questions, never smiled and when i didn’t tip she came to tell me that that was insane and that i should never come back. i suggested taking the employees advice and to not go.
When I got there they couldn’t find my reservation which I made through Resy even though the details were correct and they acted as if they were doing us a favor for still taking us in. Then they sat us down at a ‘shared table’ even though there were tables for 2 that were still empty. We ordered the stracciatella with figs and it came without figs… I raised this to the waitress and she went to “check” and didn’t come back until 20 minutes later, so I asked another waiter and very nonchalantly said “Didn’t they tell you? We’re out of figs”. I asked if we could see the menu and the waiter rolled his eyes at me. Then I ordered a medium rare steak but it came very rare, almost seared and it tasted like nothing. Very disappointing experience with inexperienced staff who clearly couldn’t care less. I hope the owner of this restaurant turns things around or I don’t see it surviving very long.
Decent food, smart restaurant and good atmosphere. The service was the worst I have ever experienced in my entire life. The red haired waitress berated me publicly (and very loudly) in the restaurant for not tipping her at the end of the meal - which was a mistake on my part as I’d pressed the wrong button accidentally on the card machine, however when I tried to correct myself and tell her I did intend on tipping her but I just made a mistake, she started shouting at me. I was actually just trying to reduce the tip slightly as she was so unbelievably bad as a waitress. We certainly paid the price in the end getting shouted at.
