Phenomenal! Authentic Scandinavian spot with traditional Swedish and Nordic pastries, dishes and fika style treats and coffee. Couldn’t be happier to discover this place. Pastries were fresh, handmade not overly sweet. Coffee was third wave SF standard and the smoked trout bowl was incredibly healthy and tasty.
One word: semla Kantine’s seasonal semla is my favorite pastry in SF! I make it a point to visit when it’s available for a very short time before the Lenten season when it’s traditionally served. It has a delicious almond paste and whipped cream and is truly delightful. Other items like the breakfast sandwich, cardamom knot, and cardamom latte are excellent. I haven’t made my way through the entire menu but hope to try the savory porridge, breakfast plate, and other pastries soon. The space is beautiful and the counter seating can get sun drenched and quite warm. I’m inspired to visit Scandinavian countries one day to get a taste of what Kantine does so well!
An absolutely amazing place with healthy and satisfying brunches. Both food and service were top notch...oh and other visitors were so nice and inspiring!
Kantine is the only authentic, truly Scandinavian place in the entire Bay area. Amazing, healthy and tasty food! Love their pastries as well as their sandwiches. The interiors follows the typical Scandinavian style. Day specials are sold out quickly. You cannot book a table but waiting in line is always worted! Prices aligned with the typical ones in the bay area. They are the best!
My Norwegian teacher recommended this as a place to try out some true Nordic pastries. It was phenomenal. We loved the danish, morning bun, poppy seed covered croissant, cardamom bun and the chocolate covered chocolate mousse. The strawberry lemonade was also excellent. We sat outside with the dog on a warm day and they kindly brought extra stools to seat all of us.
This place is a great place to grab a filling sandwich that is not a foot long or a thick dough bread. I know I love Scandinavian food but I truly enjoyed the smoked trout sandwich! The organic strawberry lemonade was a good beverage to partner with the sandwich. Kudos to the owner and staff!
Always a pleasant and delicious visit. I’m often inspired but Kantine’s weekend specials—pastries & dishes. Even with a longer than usual line, I can find a spot to sit and stay for a little while. The staff is friendly and efficient with fulfilling orders, especially on the busiest of weekends.
The best way to find a cool cafe serving great food, just stumbling across it whilst waiting for the local record store to open (at midday! Lazy! 😆). I had the cured trout in a seeded roll with potato crema and salad. Delicious. And as good as anything Ole and Steen can rustle up. Glad I ordered 2 Swedish Caves (crumbly jam-filled treats) as I got most the first one all down myself. Super friendly and handsome staff. Highly recommended.
I LOVED kantine. The bakery has to be one of the bests in SF, they have mastered everything on the menu and the flavor profiles are there. The staff working there is super kind. However, I’ll have to give it just 4 stars because I had to wait almost 30 mins to finally get something I didn’t order. The staff was definitely overloaded. I came back in a less popular time and it was okay. A must try for me is the morning bun, flaky, sweet and buttery and the Hugo cocktail is one of the best ones in the city. They really do a great job with the elderflower. They also have a bunch of goodies you can get. As for the vibe, it’s great to meet with friends or even have a date.I also think they do a great work with the artists and relevant personalities waiting names. It just makes the experience more whole and gives you an opportunity to get to know or revisit someone’s work.
very authentically scandi! i recommend the hot trout bowl- so good. northern europeans know their stuff about fish and potatoes. loved my kardemumma kaffe and it was so nice to see classic swedish buns 💜 made me really miss home which is how you know it’s legit. for the people complaining saying it’s too healthy/bland/expensive/small portions….. food is healthy and simple in northern europe! portions are small and quality ingredients are expensive. that’s just how it goes in norden. thanks for a taste of home in sf <3 source: i’m danish-american, have lived in sweden and was married to a swede so i have a pretty good grasp on nordic fare!
I usually run in for coffee and their baked goods which are delicious. Their Cardamon Morning Buns, Semlor Bun, a cardamon bun with cream filling, almond croissants, and I love their cookies esp. the Kolasnittar (caramel slices) and their Jam Caves, a Scandinavian Thumbprint. The cafe is a little off the beaten track on Market (away from Downtown), a couple of blocks from Zuni Cafe. Parking is not too bad if you go up the hill away from Market St. It’s cute place with a nice vibe. I intend to have a meal there soon, their plates look delicious with whole grain breads, cheeses, porridges, eggs & salmon. As an aside, they also have a cookbook, Scandinavian from Scratch. I had a couple of questions on a recipe and asked when I happened to stop in for pastries. Nichole, the owner and creator was there and was really nice and helpful troubleshooting the recipe!
After visiting Copenhagen last spring, I'd been struggling to find the Danish pastry tebirkes in the US. Luckily they have it here. It was good, but not as good as the ones I'd had in Denmark. However, the cardamom bun here is a must try. It was perfectly flaky and soft with a great balanced cardamom spice. I enjoyed these pastries with a black tea with steamed oat milk. Service is excellent and the counter views offer a great vibe. Definitely a must try spot.
The environment is so so so pretty that we decided we must come. I heard they are the only Northern Europe brunch place in SF. The waitress were super nice and recommended the pastries to us. The pastry was insanely flaky and good!!!!!! We also got the savory porridge. It’s fairly unique and I would love to try the sweeter one next time :) the brunch plate is very cool. I recommend here :)
Everything we tried was delicious. Option to choose/customize several items for the brunch board is so fun. The ham and cheese sandwich was recommended by one of the staff, huge portion, very crispy croissant like bread with assorted seeds on the outside. Flaky and delicious! Grilled cheese and tomato soup was a smaller portion but I really enjoyed it! Indoor and outdoor seating available. Self serve water and utensils.
TLDR great vibes great pastries ok food! The tebirkes croissant was amazing. The cardamon knot was a bit overhyped we found it just ok. Food was mediocre - very aesthetic and healthy but honestly overpriced for what it is (porridge, bread, butter, jam, cheese, egg) like you can just make at home haha there’s nothing special about the flabors. No technique involved either. Just simple healthy ingredients (at least the brunch plate and porridge) so don’t get all the hype tbh. But pastries are amazing!
Pastries are delicious - it always exceeds my expectations and utilizes very unique and special flavors in a city with tons of bakery options. Staff is very kind and helpful. It can get crowded so be prepared for a wait. Unfortunately the latte I had left little to be desired - the milk was steamed too hot and was overstretched; the espresso itself was bitter and didn’t have any discerning flavor. Overall food and pastries are delicious; I personally would go just for that; could have been an off day for the barista, but I would personally skip the coffee/latte
