Everything was so authentic here. Not just the food and atmosphere but the interactions. Our server was awesome and was so knowledgeable about every dish and the background of the restaurant. I wish I remembered his name but he made the whole experience even better. I had the duck enchiladas, the queso fundido, and the Pepino Pica to drink. Everything was so flavorful and fresh I would definitely recommend all 3 of those. Someone with me had the tortilla soup and the broth was super tasty and the toppings on the side were fun, but there was barely any chicken in it which was a bummer. Also, I'm not a huge sweets person but the Crepas de Cajeta were perfect for sharing and so rich and yummy. Definitely recommend for a nice evening out!
I went here to celebrate my husband’s birthday, and it was a wonderful experience. The property and décor are beautiful, unique, and thoughtfully done. I absolutely loved the ambience and overall vibe. Our servers were amazing, and the food was delicious especially the mango tres leches, which was to die for. The only downside was that it felt a bit noisy since the tables were placed quite close together.
The food was fantastic, and Maury’s service was outstanding, he was attentive, friendly, welcoming, and gave great suggestions! We’ll definitely be back. Thank you, Maury We ordered: - Prickly pear frozen margarita (strong and not too sweet) - Frozen sangria swirl (STRONG lol) - Queso with rajas and chorizo verde, served with fresh half flour/half corn tortillas (the small portion is actually a good size for 3–4 people). - Duck enchiladas with half salsa verde and half poblano spinach sauce (Maury’s excellent suggestion!). - Mole enchiladas. - Tres leches cake with mango sorbet. - Crepas de cajeta.
I’ve never been excited to write a restaurant review before, but Fonda San Miguel exceeded every expectation. Located just off the main road in the Allandale neighborhood, the restaurant sits in an area where quiet residential streets mix naturally with local shops. We knew immediately we were in the right place when we saw cars making a beeline for the valet. The dramatic, old-world entrance—with its historic hacienda feel—set the tone instantly and had me genuinely excited for what was to come. We arrived about 30 minutes early hoping to hang out at the bar, but the place was already buzzing and completely packed! We were told we’d be seated closer to our 8 p.m. reservation, which was understandable given how lively it was. The air was filled with conversation and energy. We made our way to the bar, but every seat was taken, always a good sign! The bar itself is stunning. The back bar rises into glass-fronted shelves lined with vintage bottles, decanters, and colorful vessels, all dramatically backlit in saturated jewel tones. The bottles glow like artifacts. What truly elevates the space is the stained glass running beneath the shelving, so intricate, richly colored panels that cast a soft, prismatic glow across the bar top. Light reflects off the glassware and marble, creating a layered, luminous depth. This restaurant nails every important detail from service and decor to food and drinks. Our server, Daniel, was phenomenal. His recommendations were spot-on, and he checked in at just the right moments without ever hovering. What we ordered: Appetizers Lobster and Shrimp Tostada Special- one of the specials. A beautifully composed tostada topped with tender lobster and shrimp. Queso Fundido with Rajas- arrived bubbling hot, rich, and comforting, with the roasted poblano strips adding just the right balance of smokiness and depth. What truly elevated it was that it came with fresh, house-made tortillas. Angels on Horseback- beautifully executed, but what really stood out were the pickled vegetables served alongside the shrimp. Ate mine without the bacon. Drinks Pepino Pica (their cucumber margarita) — so good I had two La Rubia- vibrant without being overly seeet Paloma- clean citrusy and well executed. A classic drink you can never ho wrong with this. Entrees Vegetable Enchilada de Mole Poblano (my order): deeply comforting and beautifully executed. The mole was rich without being heavy, and every bite was savory and satisfying. One of my friends described it as perfectly authentic with an elevated flair. Beef Wellington Special: ordered by my friend, who said it was cooked and prepared flawlessly. Enchiladas Suizas: another solid, well-executed dish that was thoroughly enjoyed. Dessert Tres Leches (shared)- not your traditional overly sweet version. The flavors were beautifully balanced, light, and absolutely delicious. A small but thoughtful detail: my friend ordered a Coca-Cola and it was served in an OG glass Coke bottle, which felt perfectly on brand. Shoutout to Paul, the manager, who made sure every table was taken care of and was consistently present throughout the evening. Overall a 10/10 for ambiance, service, and food. Everything was top-notch. This is a must-visit in Austin, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone!
Traditional sharing mexican cuisine, the restaurant located inside a beautiful old mansion. It's very pretty and nicely decorated. The vibe is casual and fun, elegant and colorful. The food is great and it is a nice place for gathering, special occasion. Cocktails are recommended!
Amazing food and friendly staff. Staff have amazing recommendations! The Adobo Negro Ribeye was a perfect medium rare, and the whitefish civeche was a great twist on a dish.
We had a fantastic birthday dinner here. The food was absolutely delicious, one of the best mexican dishes I’ve ever had. I’d definitely come back!
This is a must if you visit Austin. Staff was great and the food and drinks even better. Can’t wait to go back. The margaritas were really good.
This is our special holiday meal. It's just such an amazing experience. The decor is captivating. Th wait staff is exceptional. And the food is so good. We started with the queso fundido (with extra corn tortillas), 2 of us shared the whole dish and a nopales salad and sweet potatoes- every bite was delicious. One person had another fish dish that was both delicate and rich. And the 4th person in our group had the chicken enchiladas mole - it was hard not to lick the plate. We shared the caramel crepes and tres leches cake for dessert. Rich and delicious.
In the last year, we've eaten here 3 times and it is now one of my favorite restaurants not just in Austin but anywhere in the US. While parking is in short supply, there is free valet parking and they are fast and efficient. Both the outdoor and indoor decor is welcoming and enticing. The food and drinks are fantastic. On our most recent visit, there was a small mariachi band that was incredibly talented. While they were a little loud as they played near us, one of the musicians was charming and kind; he suggested we signal if we'd like them to move a little further away. I'll be back again and again for more fantastic dining experiences!
Went here for a birthday dinner, was pleasantly surprised by the great service and good tasting food! We arrived late at night, there was complimentary valet service as well as a parking lot next door which we utilized. The waitress was very attentive making sure all our needs were met so we didn’t feel rushed whatsoever to leave our table, like some other restaurants. The duck enchiladas were very very good, highly recommend getting it. The queso fundido was fun to eat as well — I preferred the flour tortilla over the corn. The staple chips and salsa were nice but the green was better than the red, try mixing them for a nice combination. The Chile relleno was ok but I preferred the duck enchiladas so much more.
Pretty good. Food is great, but you are eating here for the atmosphere and experience. The enchiladas are excellent as are the tacos. Our server was John F, he was fantastic. Very professional and attentive. Not to mention they give you chips and salsa. Seems like a standard, but not every place does that here (cough, cough-Curra’s). Tres Leches presentation was incredible as well. Even the flowers on top tasted great.
What a wonderful meal on so many levels! The wagu beed al carbon tacos melt in your mouth. The cauliflower tacos were as delicious as they were beautiful. The trees leches came with a scoop of mango sorbet. Then the ambiance was every bit as good as the food. My wife declared this restaurant as our new celebration restaurant.
We went here for a birthday dinner and had a great dining experience. As a vegetarian, I wasn’t blown away by the limited vegetarian/vegan options on the menu, but the great service was what made it a 5⭐️ meal. The ambience was lovely, right from the entry doorway, to the antechamber and the main dining spaces (we sat in the central space, but there were two other spaces as well). The menu is quite pricy, however it was great to see that reflected in the service as well - our server (Jennifer?) was attentive and polite, and also packed up our food for us after the meal. For drinks we got margaritas - one with lemon and another with watermelon: both tasted great (we’re also quite potent). The queso fundido was melty and delicious - served with corn and flour mini tortillas, the corn tortillas were very good. The sweet potato was actually the best tasting item (we ordered it based on an Instagram reel): perfectly steamed and pan fried. The chipotle shrimp dish was good. The vegetable enchiladas were also decent but nothing great. As it was a birthday meal, the très leches we ordered came with a greeting (not complimentary though) - it was great with mango and mint. It was served with a mango sorbet with granita which was a little strange in its flavor. Overall this was a great restaurant for a special dinner.
Awesome atmosphere, great service including free valet parking. The margaritas are STRONG! Food is super flavorful and the tortillas are all made fresh in house. We loved the entire meal and highly recommend. Just don’t eat lunch so you can have proper space for all the heavy Mexican food.
Came here with a friend for dinner and had a very pleasant experience. All of the food was delicious and portions were just right. I ended up having a small bone in my chicken and had to return my dish but the waitstaff were extremely courteous about it and handled the situation great. The suiza sauce and tres leches really stood out for me and my friend enjoyed her tostadas as well!
The finest authentic Mexican food in Austin. The service and atmosphere match the food experience. Easy directions to get to this amazing establishment. Take some time to read through the website to understand the history and read published articles as well. Our food was divine! Each dish was one of a kind. We hope you enjoy these pics as much as we enjoyed the view. The Atrium/Bar area is exquisite.

The branding here has always mildly annoyed me, though it seemed they have toned it back over the years, the whole "real Mexican food, not Texmex" attitude kind of puts me off, as if Texmex is not just another regional cuisine of Mexico. But I was craving this type of food and they definitely deliver every time. The interior is meticulously curated, maybe one of the best-designed restaurants in the city. I ordered the mole enchiladas with chicken. The mole sauce was not too spicy, and rich and complex, but when it was just the sauce over the enchiladas it became kind of heavy and one-note. It needed some sort of greens to cut the richness. But nevertheless on the same tier as mole I have had in Mexico for real and in my opinion the portion was pretty large. I did not try much of the pastor tacos but they were pretty good. You can also order a dressed modelo here which is what won me over and convinced me that this place is not too snobby. We were here celebrating an anniversary-turned-engagement(!) and our waitress was super super knowledgeable and friendly, I wish I remembered her name so I could give her a shout out, and she brought us dessert and champagne on the house. The tres leches cake was good but the mango mezcal ice cream was the real winner of the night. It was not too boozey but the smokiness from the mezcal was still really forward. And it tasted like it was made from real mangos because it was very fresh. in the past I remember ordering the relleno with chicken as well as the queso fundido which I think I liked a little bit more than the mole and I would probably get that next time. But I am glad to have tried something new. Also this place is very good about listing allergies. The specials menu(not the main one) even listed some dishes as having allium in them which seems like a rare allergy for people to list and I appreciate that.
Last night we went to Fonda for girls night out and the place is absolutely beautiful. To start with our sever brought us water and chips right as we got seated. Chips were all broken and the server started off as very inattentive and uninterested in checking on us. After waiting we asked the other server who was extremely polite and attentive and eventually the service got better. Food: chips and salsa was good, queso was pretty stretchy (maybe it’s supposed to be that way) but not out of the world taste. My friends ordered shrimp dish and loved every bite of it. I got veggies enchiladas were pretty delicious. Overall the food was good and definitely above average. Service was okay.
Atmosphere here was fantastic! Love the location and how everything flowed. The food was very tasty. We had Camarones, tostadas appetizers, al pastor tacos, and a classic marg! The camarones was quite large — lots of food to soak up. Slightly spicy but very tasty. The tostadas were amazing — loved these so much and the variety was perfect to get a taste of everything. The Al pastor was also good. Smaller in size but so tasty. My biggest critique was how the waiter we had was honestly a bit unprofessional, seemed rushed and that was inconvenienced him. Not a fan of being rushed during an expensive dinner. The price point for the dishes also did not match up. $30 for 3 pastor tacos? That is crazy. This is something I encourage people to review. The food is tasty but doesn’t live up to the price point.
Love this place! The art and paintings all around are just spectacular, it really feels like stepping into Mexico — almost like being in San Miguel de Allende. The service was excellent and the food was good as well. The only downside was that the bar closed without us being told. It would have been nice if our server had let us know and given us a last call, because when I asked for another margarita I was told the bar was already closed. Maybe just a reminder for the staff to announce when the kitchen or bar is about to close would make the experience even better.

I really love eating this place when I visit Austin, but tonight I had to do a pick up order. The fish was delicious but you cannot forget to debone a fish before serving. It could really hurt somebody. But for me I just ate my fish while carefully fishing shards of bone from my mouth in between chews. Very disappointing for a restaurant at this price point.
Food was great! Service was mediocre. Felt pushy to order specific things. We went on our wedding anniversary and it didn't feel special. No one mentioned it from the reception to the server. Not asking for much but to pick somewhere to celebrate our special occasion, specify it on our reservation, and not even get an acknowledgement is pretty sad. Not asking much. We spent almost $200 total on 2 drinks, 1 appetizer, and 2 entrees. I ate here with my friends before for her moving away and you all acknowledged and celebrated when we dined in. Parking here is limited and spills onto neighborhood street parking.

I mentioned to our server, Mer, that the sauces and guacamole tasted sour to me. She responded by saying that maybe I was sour, which I found unprofessional and rude. I still continued tasting the food with an open mind, just in case it was my own perception, but I remained confident that the food did taste sour. Because of this experience, we decided not to order dinner and left the restaurant. As a heads up, parking is very difficult. The restaurant itself looks nice, but the waiting area was extremely cold. There was no heater, and with the outside temperature around 33 degrees, the waiting area felt just as cold.
