Wonderful meal. The food was well though out service was good. I would highly recommend it. We liked the veggies best.

It comes at no surprise that BATA received one of Bon Appetit's Best New Restaurant designations for 2022! BATA is an excellent addition to the downtown dining scene. The dishes are well-prepared and the staff are very welcoming. I can't wait to see what they do next...

This place is amazing. The bar seat is the best. Opening up with a great view of the kitchen. You must start with the Malawach it's amazing butter fried bread with a side of homemade Labna. Will definitely hit this place everytime I'm in town to see what chef Fenton has on his ever changing menu!

Outstanding food, service and ambiance!

This is a very interesting, good nouveau cuisine place in downtown Tucson. Creative menu so the price of entrees is higher and the portions are smaller. Cocktails were good but not worth the price. Almost all Servers and staff have tattoos everywhere.

Amazing food and amazing service! We’re visiting from out of town and wanted a nice dinner with delicious food and friendly people, and BATA hit the nail on the head. Highly recommend the beef carpaccio, which paired great with the malawach, and the albacore crudo (picture)! Our server Oliver was so kind and helpful as well, huge shoutout to him! 5/5 we’re definitely coming back in the future.

Great for foodies. Locally sourced ingredients. Great natural wine list.

Wow! I can’t say enough good things about Bata. Our server, Rhea went above and beyond and gave us so many recommendations! The food was absolutely delicious and the atmosphere is so unique and cozy. I highly recommend dining at Bata!

Impressive and delightful. The flavors are subliminal and the service is attentive. The kitchen is open and you can see the robata grill with all the goodies in action. The items are made for sharing and selecting a couple items per person is optimal. Wine selection on point.

10/10 experience! Our server, Oliver, was fabulous and the food was phenomenal. Highly recommend letting your server curate the experience for you. We will definitely be back!

Your favorite restaurant is now your second-favorite restaurant. Ultra Cool vibe on the approach, into reception, and throughout the entire venue. Meticulously appointed, even down to the lights on the tables. Wait staff is knowledgeable, hospitable and accommodating. Extensive wine list, craft cocktails and "Zero Proof" cocktails. Food is visually appealing, well-plated, and impeccably prepared, not to mention next-level delicious. Portions are perfect for sharing however, once you have your own bite you'll wish you had the entire dish all to yourself. BATA-boom

BATA was an incredible experience! Great attentive service, paired with delicious small plates. The portions are perfect for sharing! We tried 6 menu items and each one was better than the last. The pork belly melted in my mouth. I'll be coming back to try more! You'll definitely need a reservation if you'd like to sit at a table. I was able to walk in and sit at the bar with a party of 3.

If you’ve ever wondered why Tucson is a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, head to BATA — and bring your foodie friends. Sourcing nearly all products from a 400-mile radius certainly pays off, with fresh, seasonal ingredients highlighted in every dish. Other reviews do touch on the pricing, and it’s true that this isn’t a low-cost restaurant, but I find value in chefs emphasizing high-quality components from smaller local sources (which may in turn cost more). The menu is continually evolving, and small-plate sharing ensures a new adventure with every visit. The servers attentively explain the format and flavor profiles, and the restaurant itself has an inviting, moody modern-warehouse feel, including the cellar bar. On a recent visit, we enjoyed this array of delights: malawach with labneh, compressed cucumber, and cured egg yolk; shishitos with jamon, bean purée, and roasted-fennel soubise; Japanese eggplant with peanut sauce, shrimp aioli, roasted corn, kelp oil, and lemon/Thai basil; halibut with grain porridge and smoked-butter sabayon; a mushroom skewer with whiskey-garlic glaze and mushroom broth; and grilled potato bread with cultured butter and smoked salt. Each fire-kissed dish built upon the next, with umami, texture, and depth, and it was a pleasure to watch the open kitchen humming along in the background as we savored the outstanding food. Among the most memorable meals we’ve had in Tucson!

Came here for dinner for my wife’s 30th bday on a suggestion from her best friend, and we’re glad we came. Food was unique, creative and flavorful. Had 10+ dishes and every single plate was top notch. Ordered the malawach twice. Highlight for me was the grilled cabbage with a sourdough sauce and the butter poached halibut. Restaurants in my city just got awarded Michelin stars and BATA definitely deserves at least 1 because the food and room was spectacular

This place is a unique and special dining experience. The atmosphere is industrial with an open kitchen taking up a large portion of the overall space. You can smell the white oak fires that they use to prepare every item on the menu, and there are stacks of oak firewood by the door. The meal is served family style/tapas style with each dish intended to be shared. Their menu is very vegetarian friendly, but they also feature dishes including aged local beef, pork, and fowl; as well as fresh Seafood from San Diego. Their cocktail selection is delicious and their Old Fashioned, with Buddha's Hand bitters, is the best I have ever had. The dessert selection is also amazing and showcases a lot of the Molecular Gastronomy style flare that is tastefully used throughout the menu. The menu changes daily so you'll have to be prepared to choose your dish after arrival, but there are no bad options here. This is fine dining, so the price isn't cheap, but for the quality of meal you get here it's very reasonably priced compared to similar experiences.

First off, yes, any fine dining establishment comes with a bit of a steep price; that said, I would say Bata’s prices are some of the fairest among fine dining establishments I’ve visited! My partner and I ordered nine dishes, three cocktails and two desserts for $200 after tip, which blew our minds (especially when compared to prices in cities like LA, Seattle, and even smaller cities on the West Coast). Most importantly, though, the food and service were were OUTSTANDING! We had the tomato tartlet, smoked tomatoes, potatoes with harissa and chili crisp, lion’s mane mushrooms, malawach with labneh, potato rolls, carrots with bagna cauda, and two desserts (basil ice cream sandwich and bread pudding). Our favorites were the charry, garlicky carrots, the crispy, flaky, buttery malawach (a flatbread that I would describe as a mix between a paratha and puff pastry), and the smoked tomatoes (if a sun-dried tomato sat next to a campfire—deliciousness). The bread pudding has a brûléed topping and was swimming in crème anglaise (I know that sound pretentious, but trust me, you want to try it—it’s like if a cinnamon roll and toffee had a baby and moved to France). Please try Bata for a nice dinner out in Tucson!

Lovely food and drink experience. Ordered several dishes all which were unique and tasty. Thought the tartar was one of my favorites ever.

Took my husband here for his birthday and we had a great experience. Every dish served is concocted thoughtfully and is absolutely delicious. The chefs are all wonderful, they explain the dishes well. We did the wine pairing also and our server seemed well versed in all the wines and described each well when they were served with our tastings. Definitely worth it and would go again!

Gorgeous, stunning food, and amazing customer service!!! This is next level Tucson - seriously, get the adventurous testing menu for $60 a person. The menu was spectacular!

We loved everything about our experience at BATA! A group of 4 of us made reservations for a Sunday night at 6:30pm. We were very excited to try this new Tucson space as we were visiting from Nebraska (we used to live in AZ) and travel often around the country visiting the best restaurants we can find. BATA ranks up there. The menu changes often so our particular food experience but be different, but we had a total of 8 dishes: 2 from the top, 6 from the middle, and all 3 desserts. You can see our pictures but the highlights were the carnitas, the bean broth (beans were slightly undercooked), the malawach and the accompanying dip, the AZ grains that accompanied a few of the dishes, and the eggplant. Cocktails were also a highlight! I believe the coffee-infused vodka drinks was one of the best cocktails I’ve ever had. Aside from the food, I found the service to be fantastic. Eva, our server, was quiet and calm but added to the experience with her knowledge of the dishes. I mentioned the “experience” of BATA as being first-class and here’s why: as I made my way back from the bathroom, I stopped at the bar to peek at the shelf of liquors. After being nosey for a minute, I sat back down. Within 1 minute the bar manager approached our table and asked if there was anything I needed or had questions on. I told him I was just being nosey and looking at the bar ingredients. I thought this was a very nice tough that I’ve never experienced at a bar/restaurant before. Additionally, for my second cocktail, I wanted to see what else the bartender had up his sleeve. I asked our server to have the bartender make me a drink—something bitter and dry with gin. He made me a fantastic Vesper. But after a while, the bartender himself came over to the table to ask how it was. Another nice touch. If you’re dining at BATA, you CANNOT bring the same expectations as you would to Texas Roadhouse. Trust the experience that the kitchen and bartenders will take you on!

My sister and I had an excellent dinner at BATA when we visited Tucson last month. As a vegan, I felt extremely well-taken care of and appreciated the specific vegan-only menu set aside for me. The food was incredible and creative, from start to finish.

My experience was very euphoric. Watching the staff was like watching a dance. The food was beautiful and delicious. Oliver our waiter was knowledgeable and articulate. He was brilliant at reading his customers. My favorite was the smoked and grilled pork belly, potato pave, carrot beurre monte, dill. Wonderful! Labne ice cream for birthday finish. Yum 😋

We just let our server make recommendations and everything was fantastic. Plates are served family style or small plates for sharing. So many delicious combinations that I wouldn’t normally select. The Bordeaux wine our server suggested was wonderful too. Such a fun spot for those special occasions.

So, my friend and I walked here from The Century Room. It was a nice stroll, there was rain in the air, and the light was amazing. We sat at the bar facing the open kitchen. The bartender was super friendly, very helpful. He told us they had a separate bar downstairs, so we had to check that out first. The downstairs bar is fantastic. We were the only ones there besides the bartender. There is a large L shaped bar, and lots of table and benches with cozy pillows. After checking downstairs out, we elected for our original seats at the upstairs bar. I ordered a beer, which our bartender gave me in a cold glass (he even poured - really good guy). My friend had a sweet tooth thing going on and ordered a lemon tart. Bata is a fun place. Lots of attention to detail is evident. If you're looking for a nice place to take a date, somewhere where they aren't too stuffy and full of themselves, this is a great choice. I can't wait to bring my special someone here for the great food they have on their menu (which is seasonal and reflects market conditions).

The best restaurant in Tucson. We reserved their private room and had our small wedding reception there. I’ve been here ~6 times now and each time has been amazing. Literally the best duck and the best pork I’ve ever had have been here. The cocktails are always extremely cold and are typically simple cocktails upgraded with interesting ingredients so they’re amazing without being showy. I’ve never had anything but amazing service here. When/if Michelin comes to town, BATA will immediately get at least one star.

I cannot say enough good things about our experience at BATA. It is fine dining! First, the staff is top notch! Our waiter, Trevor, was knowledgeable and patient with us as we navigated our first time there. They made me a special cocktail that was phenomenal! Second, the food is high quality, extremely delicious, unique, interesting, and well crafted. On the way home, we couldn't pick our favorite dish because they were all so good! Finally, the atmosphere is fantastic! Big windows, not loud, and comfortable for the high quality of food and service. We enjoyed it so much, and will be back because we love to try new things! Thank you for giving us such a wonderful experience!

Farm to table is common in my home region, the Pacific Northwest, but quite an accomplishment in Tucson, AZ. Bata’s chef and team have emphasized this aspect brilliantly and every dish I sampled brought forward the very essence of fresh and perfectly prepared. Andy provided a tour of the menu, which I greatly appreciate on a first visit. Very plant forward, but samples of the steak tartare and the succulent pork were outstanding. Every aspect, from cocktail through desert and coffee were presented thoughtfully and enthusiastically. These folks love what they do and where they do it. I have been blessed to dine at three Michelin starred restaurants in the last few years and BATA meets or exceeds that standard in a far less pretentious and far more personable way. Take someone you love (and who loves food) here!

S
Stephanie Fournier

Thank goodness for our wonderful waitress, she explained that you want to think of the menu as family style and order a few plates for everyone to share. By a few I mean about 8 to 10 plates for 4 people. If you go into it ordering one dish for yourself you'll be left hungry. Now that that's out of the way, the food was delicious! Fresh, unique flavors, with a lot of smoky ingredients. My favorites were the beef tartare, albacore tuna, mushroom skewers and the dry aged picanha.

For my birthday, my amazing girlfriend treated me to Bata, an extraordinary culinary experience in the heart of Tucson’s Warehouse Arts District. Housed in a beautifully renovated historic warehouse, the space is stunning—soaring ceilings with exposed bowed trusses, floor-to-ceiling windows, and an open kitchen that invites you into the action. The name Bata is a nod to robata, the Japanese tradition of grilling over an open flame, and while this isn’t a Japanese restaurant, the influence is unmistakable in the technique-driven, fire-kissed dishes. We started with cocktails, which were nothing short of inspired. The Marshall Gulch Manhattan—a perfectly balanced blend of 6-year-old rye, Napa sweet vermouth, Barolo Chinato, and Buddha’s hand bitters—was bold and nuanced, while my Skull Valley Part II was a revelation: smoky, spicy, and tropical all at once, featuring blanco tequila, pineapple, eau de vie, chili liqueur, blanco vermouth, lime, and a delicate Chartreuse rinse. The menu at Bata is designed for sharing, with small plates that let you explore a range of flavors and textures. We began with a delicate tartlet of herbed ricotta and carrot, a perfect little amuse-bouche that set the stage for what was to come. The pork and beef meatball, paired with chimichurri kimchi and miso, was umami-rich and deeply satisfying. One of the most memorable bites of the night was the Malawach—a flaky, pan-fried Yemenite bread served with whey jam and cured egg yolk. It was simultaneously crisp and buttery, with layers that melted on the tongue, balanced by the richness of the jam and the umami depth of the yolk. An absolute standout. Then came the Seared Albacore, a dish that embodied balance and restraint. The silky fish, just kissed by the heat, was paired with creamy curd, bright marmalade, a whisper of heat from chiles, and the luscious depth of olive oil. Every bite was an interplay of richness and acidity, a beautifully executed study in contrasts. The honeynut squash with koji custard, grains, and Bata’s own furikake was another dish that showcased their mastery of layering flavors. Sweet, savory, and nutty with a whisper of fermentation, this was autumn on a plate. The black cod arrived bathed in a luxurious kimchi broth, accented by blistered greens, miso mushrooms, and tender turnips. The fish was perfectly cooked—silky and infused with a subtle smokiness that only live fire cooking can achieve. Every spoonful of that broth was a concentrated hit of complexity, with just the right amount of heat. Desserts at Bata push boundaries in the best way possible. The tiramisu was unlike any I’ve had before, reimagined with lion’s mane mushroom mascarpone, cherry, hibiscus, and matcha. Earthy, slightly floral, and deeply creamy—it was a work of art. As if that wasn’t enough, the restaurant surprised us with an additional birthday treat: a lavender pavlova with cat’s claw honey caramel, citrus, and burnt corn husk. Light as air, floral, and perfectly sweet, it was the ideal ending to an unforgettable meal. Service was impeccable—Oliver, our server, was attentive without being intrusive, always ensuring our table was refreshed, water glasses filled, and dishes timed perfectly. Bata is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates bold, inventive cuisine and masterful technique. The fire-driven menu is deeply thoughtful, the cocktails are top-tier, and the ambiance is effortlessly cool. Tucson has a real gem in Bata. I can’t wait to return. Thank you so much J.S. for such a wonderful evening. :-)

I really enjoy BATA, and I've been there before. This time the food was not as good as the last time (summer menu, I presume) and they were also short staffed, but that did not deter from a great experience and a lovely evening. Back at winter again, and the food was fabulous. My only criticisms is that some of dishes come a little lukewarm vs super hot, but the flavor is just out of this world.

All time! Is now my #1 fine dining spot in Tucson when I'm in town. It's a must! Secret... come with a couple people or so when you have at least $80 per person, $100+ is better if you like to drink too, then ask them to have the Chef surprise you by designing/choosing the dishes and order himself! We had 11 courses I think for about $90(not including our drinks). It is in the running for the best meal of my life, seriously! And I traveled to NOLA for 4 years for work! Perfect plating, presentation, and service!!!

We had dinner last night (7/9) at this lovely restaurant. First, the food selection, portions and above all the tastes were superb. Prices were reasonable and certainly not out of line for the Tucson area. We will certainly return in the near future. The chefs are artists and really magic. Thanks especially to Oliver and D.J. You certainly helped make it a memorable evening.

Classic comfort dishes made in a 1 of 1 fashion, Every dish I have ever had here has been exemplary, unique, and thought provoking in the most unexpected way. Sustainable kitchen, kind and personable staff, beautiful venue displaying Tucson’s best. Also quite affordable prices and deals for being Tucson upscale. Highly recommended atleast once! Also the desserts are super fun and TO DIE FOR !!!!

This was an amazing dining experience. Reminded me of a high-end restaurant in any major city. The food left me wanting to lick the plates! Leave room for desert, you won’t want to miss it! A shout out to our server Grace. She was very knowledgeable about the menu and provided a very high level of service. Even when something came out not to our liking, she handled it quickly and professionally. We are already planning our next visit. If you want a more modern, big city type of dinning experience, give BATA at try! You will not be disappointed. I’m glad to see a restaurant like this in Tucson.

We dined at BATA for the 2nd time tonight. Perfection! We had the best meal, even better than the first time. Service was fantastic and timing was well executed. Oliver was our server last time; he recognized us and came to say hello. Portion sizes are perfect as the quality of ingredients are key to the success of each experience. This is my favorite restaurant in Tucson. We will be back and we will bring friends. If you are not sure about dining here, don't hesitate. This is a gem!!!

The food and service were both exceptional. I asked our server a ton of questions about the dishes because they were all very unique and I'm a food nerd. He and the bartender were very knowledgeable and friendly. The Chef explained their endeavor to be an almost zero waste restaurant, no easy feat! I will definitely return!

Delicious as always. Small plates crafted with precision. Wonderful fresh flavors. Great innovative cocktails. Bartenders and servers that know and love the food they serve. The Tuna dish we had most recently was a stand out. Love the open kitchen concept so you can sit close to the action.

We went to BATA to celebrate our Anniversary and were pleasantly surprised by the experience. The lighting used for each table created a nice atmosphere. We enjoyed the open kitchen concept. The portions were very reasonable for the ingredients and quality. We really enjoyed the tartare and the chocolate cake was heavenly. The only issues we had were that the water carafes weren’t polished and the server incorrectly placed our silverware. Nothing that would be detrimental but something we noticed as restaurant workers. We would definitely come back again!

Came here on a date night and did the Let Us Pick for you option on the menu. The dining space is beautiful, with an open dining rim, with low light around the tables. We were seated at a booth along the window. The kitchen opens to the restaurant space. We came early on a Sunday evening and it was quiet with only a few tables full. Our server DJ was great, attentive and engaged. The food was excellent, every dish was flavorful, touched by the fire and offering great combinations of texture, flavor and color. The Malawach was awesome, buttery and flaky. We shared a bottle of Sparkling Tea, which was a nice N/A option. We both left contented after sharing the dishes within the fixed menu. At the end of the meal, before leaving one of the servers referenced the downstairs bar, which was closed for the evening. However, they took us down to see - looks like a great space with a small food menu and an awesome cocktail list.

BATA offers one of the best dining experiences in Tucson. My wife and I did the Chef’s Counter with the wine pairing, where we were able to taste through 10 different dishes, with approximately 1 wine per two dishes. The food, presentation, attentive service and ambiance of the space were excellent from start to finish. Being able to speak with the chefs about the dishes, and to dig into the artistry of each plating elevated the entire experience. I cannot recommend BATA enough if fine dining is something you enjoy.

Lovely dinner at Bata. It’s been on the bucket list and it did not disappoint. Our favorites in order: 1. malawach (my goodness the flavor) we gobbled up two! 2. Steak (sauce and it was cooked to perfection) 3. Mushroom skewer (sauce A+) 4. Boa bun (great flavour but not the best of the best, still good though) 5. Albacore (decent tuna dish nothing spectacular) 6. Chocolate sorbet dessert (had high hopes for it but was medium good, not bad but not amazing). Husband also ordered the old fashioned - superb cocktail. Overall great experience, our waiter and other wait staff were attentive and awesome. Will return and recommend.

High end. Earthy. Dark. Mix of modern and natural elements and who doesn’t like fire. Every item on the Bata menu has been touch by fire and many ingredients are locally AZ sourced. 🔥🌵 Bata serves familiar dishes without being pretentious, yet has a unique twist that can only be found here. The plates were small and gave us the opportunity to share and taste more. 🍴 We were very satisfied and food was delicious. The food was playfully plated and some dishes too pretty to eat. ✨ I would tell anyone going to dine here to sit at the bar facing into the open concept kitchen. 🙌 You can watch the dishes being prepared throughout your entire meal. The staff is very friendly and will make conversation with your group.🙏 I will be returning to Bata for some more cocktails and dinner next time I visit Tucson.🏜️

Great meal with interesting choices on the menu. Though not a vegetarian was pleasantly surprised with the vegetarian options offered. The kitchen is an eclectic mix of Japanese/korean , Fillipine , Middle Eastern and French concepts and flavours pair with several local ingredients such a squash and beans. We had the tartlet ( good leek flavour) Meatball ( on a fascinating base made from fermented vegetable ), Squash bread , Tartare, Daikon; which proved to be a pleasant surprise. The Tortang with mushroom, red beets and pickled peppers disappointed a bit, probably because the Tortang was a bit thick (or because I am not the biggest Aubergine fan). The smoke/open fire preparation in all dishes was very noticeable yet not overbearing Overall value for money and great choices Service was friendly and efficient.

We gifted my parents a night out at Bata and the staff went above & beyond to make the experience special. Brook took time to carefully curate the perfect menu, making sure to ask about allergies & preferences. Their server (Eva or Evie - I’m so sorry I’m not getting this right!!) was fantastic & guided the experience perfectly. And then the food! Every dish was a hit, and my steak loving dad said the cod rivaled it! It’s clear the Bata team breathes hospitality and centers it at the core of their business. Thank you all for making this a night to remember!

P

How have I missed this jewel of deliciousness? Hats off to Oliver for guiding us through our first experience at Bata. It was good he asked about food allergies first, and they were not only complemented, but the chef added different ingredients. We ordered 8 items for four us with two being primarily vegetarians and two opportunivores, though the 3 course fixed price dinner was tempting. The meal was paced so leisurely. Next dishes were brought to the table when they had been prepared. We had tough time choosing a favorite for each of us as the food was so good. The local ingredients and sourced items were apparent in appearance and taste. All of the main courses seemed to have an element of grilling or smoke from the oak fired grill. As it was an anniversary, Bata provided a complementary desert in addition to the two we ordered. Not a crumb was left of any item when we departed. What a wonderful Tucson find.

BATA was fantastic!! The culinary creativity this establishment embraces while utilizing locally sourced ingredients is something every Tucsonan should experience! From the fermentation preservation, in-house cocktail program, and their intimate basement bar, BATA is an awesome time!! I'm extremely appreciative of all staff members for creating a memorable experience. I can't wait for my return visit!

I think this is the best high end culinary experience in Tucson. Everything is just incredible- the atmosphere, service and of course the food. We did the chefs choices which were perfect and allowed the 4 of us to focus on enjoying the experience without stressing about the dish choices. Surprise surprise it was all delicious. Can’t wait to go back.

Really love this restaurant. People who are saying the portions are small really don't understand what "tapas style" means. Everything we've ever had here is fantastic. Wine menu is great. Cocktails are creative. Appetizers and dinner courses have all been excellent. Love the winter squash with ancient grains especially, we get it every time. Anyone who thinks the menu is overpriced has clearly never tried fine dining in a coastal city. Hands down my favorite place to eat in Tucson, would not ever miss an opportunity to come here. Please try it out!

We went for the kitchen counter tasting menu last night. It was definitely a great experience and completely different than from the usual dining. Our course theme was all summer and herbs. A lot of the dishes are things I don't normally eat, and that made it even better when I walked away really enjoying the tasting.

Love it here! The drinks, the wine list, the cool dishes. Pricey and you won't get full, but a great experience !

Did the chef's counter tasting experience with wine pairing. My mouth is so happy.

I had the great pleasure of doing the tasting menu at Bata this evening. It was delicious food and everyone was extremely friendly and nice. I was driving so I couldn't enjoy the cocktails, but I did order the house soda which was very good. If you want a special occasion, I highly recommend going for the tasting menu.

Go here. If you live anywhere near this restaurant, go. Try anything you see, or let them bring you the dishes the chef wants you to try. We came for a birthday dinner and enjoyed their omakase style chef tasting menu. How creative, how adventurous, and all with impeccable service surrounding what's happening on each plate that came out. The wine pairing was outstanding, and we left beyond happy. Thank you to the chefs and their staff. We will absolutely be back to this powerhouse of the south! Side note: I only didn't take photos of the dishes because I thought it would be disrespectful to the experience*

This place was fantastic. I had the tartar, the squash and then the squash sorbet. It was all amazing and I couldn't believe how quickly everything came out. I'm looking forward to coming back and trying some other dishes. The service was great and the atmosphere was welcoming.

Amazing experience overall. The food was very good, the service was attentive, and the plates/courses were really cool. What stood out most was the kindness of the staff — the manager actually chased my dad and me down to return an item we accidentally left behind, which was incredibly thoughtful and appreciated. Truly great service all around. Thank u!!

Tucson, the bar has officially been raised. Tonight was a top ten meal of my life—and I’ve eaten in some truly exquisite places. Bata could be lifted straight from its tucked-away spot downtown and dropped into El Born, and it would fit right in. Every bite was thoughtful, creative, and unforgettable. The service? Flawless. The whole experience felt not just nourishing, but fulfilling. This is my new favorite restaurant in Tucson, and everyone who visits—I’m bringing them to Bata.

This was my initial dinner at Bata. The entire experience was fabulous. The food and drinks were excellent. The server was very attentive and explained each and every plate. He even ordered food selections for a food sensitivity. The desserts did not disappoint.

Wow, WOW, WOWIE. Everything was good, but the veggie dishes were the star of the show. Particularly loved the squash with chili crisp and mole, and the squash sorbet. Will be dreaming about this food for a long time to come.

Had an excellent meal at Bata. Not just the food and drinks, but the service was impeccable. The folks there really know the menu! And give credible suggestions of food and pairing. Top 3 dining experiences in Tucson.

I was with a group who needed accommodations on fairly short notice. The staff outdid themselves for us! Drinks were excellent, food was delicious, service was outstanding. I'm thinking I need to go back to try their pizza too! Definitely a must return place. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Comida fusión internacional con sabores muy definidos y bien combinados. Ambiente íntimo y agradable. Tienen un bar en el sótano que está muy bien, parece un local europeo.

We had a great experience at Bata last Saturday. The food was amazing. And the staff took time to explain the dishes. We loved the open kitchen and how unique the food, drink, & wine menu is from most every restaurant we’ve been to in Tucson. We then went downstairs to their cocktail bar and were amazed again. The bar was busy and the music was great. There was only one bartender and he had many people in front of him but still took the time to greet us and offer us menus. He took our order, asked my name, told us to take seat and he would call my name when they were ready instead of having to stand at the bar. I really appreciated that. Our drinks were great. Bata is one of the most unique experiences we’ve had.

Dined here for a birthday dinner and it exceeded expectations! The service was amazing and every dish was delicious. The roasted squash bread rolls are the best! We also got the mushroom and melon skewer, the mushroom bao (it's huge and so good!), the braised red cabbage (chef's kiss) and the pork tenderloin. Our server also gave us a list of other Tucson restaurants to try while we're here. There is a cool bar downstairs with an impressive cocktail program. BATA deserves a Michelin star!

What a wonderful experience dining here. The food was amazing and so delicious. The staff is top notch and explained everything. The only negative was the steak. The prep and sauce was very good but the steak itself was not worth the price. We will return again.

This place is fantastic. I’m so happy to finally have something like this within driving distance. Interesting and creative combinations, painstaking presentation and servers and presenters who clearly care about what they are serving. My only complaint is there is nothing to baffle the sound. It’s a beautiful modern space, I just wish restaurants would get out of the trend of having no curtains and rugs. And I’m already making my second reservation.

The food was pretty tasty. I understand this is a tapas style menu but I found some of the 'larger' portions to be on the smallish side. Should add 25% more to those 'entree' portions. The bar is the basement is a cool vibe.

Want to first say they have dietary sensitive menus as well as a vegan one— HUGE brownie points for them on that :) no hunting through the menu or asking questions on if you can have it, etc. However, definitely don’t come unless you’re willing to pay your way to a full belly. I would HIGHLY recommend it for a cocktail/wine/mocktail and appetizers before a dinner. Or maybe a ladies night out for a quick stop. The food and the flavors are delightful and are great for even the less adventurous of eaters. Everything has flavor and depth, not just spice and contrast (I feel like that’s a big flavor of Tucson with the Latin influenced cuisine). If you’re wanting a full meal for two under $100 you’re probably not going to get that here depending on amount of food you need to be full. The vibes inside were great. They cook everything as it’s ordered— keep that in mind as food takes a smidge longer to come to the table. Service was kinda slow when it came to our actual server checking on us, however, the staff acts as one big family and plates of food/drinks are brought to the table as they’re ready by any of the staff. They also all help each other when it comes to bussing dishes. Definitely recommend making a reservation in advance :)

Tucson needed a place like this, a real showstopper of a restaurant! The atmosphere is immaculate and the presentation of the food is incredible. Its not an everyday place for dinner but rather the unique experience, so come with an already full stomach and a hefty wallet... overall we enjoyed the experience but the service could have been better downstairs in the cocktail area

We loved the look and feel of this restaurant. The decor is nicely done. We didn’t sit at the bar but might try to get a spot there next time so that we can peak into the kitchen. The portions here are small even by tapas standard so be prepared to order multiples. For example, the mushroom skewer is great but it is only one small skewer which means you should order two of them. The menu is not terribly long so you’ll probably end up trying a lot that the restaurant offers.

Sleek modern building with super high ceilings and Muzak. Most of the dishes were very good, while some eclectic ones too.

Really great atmosphere and service was prompt and friendly and professional. Appreciated the care to the environment. Artistic, creative and just enough table spacing for privacy and conversation. Servers were attentive. The good: -Malawach- was the highlight. Perfection. That sauce. Sweet and tangy -The albacore was so soft, and melted in your mouth. Great balance of flavors with a tangy sauce adding to the freshness. -The mushroom skewers were also delicious well balanced and textured. -The cocktails- daaayum. That was a proper cocktail. I had the kitt peak. Presentation game is on point. Needs work: Temperature consistency. On all our dishes, some parts were properly warm and others not. The mushrooms were cold for example and we couldn’t tell if they were meant to be warm. I think the kitchen needs to pay more attention to their plating timing. The sea bass or halibut (I can’t remember which I got and the menu changes) was a bit overcooked and warm but the rest was room temp. And the starchy rice like side was really not a great compliment. Hate to sound harsh, but It was like eating a hard glue stick. Or day old topokki. IYKYK. That took all my attention away from the dish Overall we liked the place and had a great time but in this reviewers opinion, the kitchen is still finding their stride. We may try again but wouldn’t prioritize it. Or we’d go just for malawach and some drinks. Total bill was 170 with tip for two people. (I have a background in hospitality, and my dinner guest has a background in fine dining so that’s the foundation of our review).

Food was good, but uneven. Some dishes (steak, Malawach) were really good, but others like the desert pearl mushroom dish and roasted squash were not. Quality was high, and the open plan kitchen was really cool to see, but for the price, I would not go back. My friend made the comment that they left our water un refilled for 15 minutes, which is a minor thing that I didn’t think about, but I guess is a sign of service that could be improved.

Portions are confusing and you'll need heavy advice from the server about how big portions for each dish are and how much to order. They expect you to order at least 1 starter, multiple mains, and 1 desert. Some starters and desserts are individual size while some are bigger for sharing. Things are served "family style" but without serving utensils. We didn't leave hungry. The food was very good easily worth the ~70/person+drinks. The kitchen is creative and while a couple things fell flat in our table's opinion, most things were delicious. Overall it was great, 4 stars is because 1. While things are served family style, that's okay in theory, but they neither provided fresh silverware each course nor provided serving utensils. Eating off silverware and then the next course being forced to put it in a common plate with the stranger next to me that I just met was a cringy experience 2. The fashionable low-back chairs were in my opinion very uncomfortable. I had to excuse myself to the restroom at one point just to give my legs and back a break.

Excited by the ethos and styling of BATA we had high hopes. Restaurants had a lovely ambience, wait staff hit the spot with attentiveness but without hovering, and the presentation of the dishes was outstanding. Unfortunately what lets the place down is the flavour of the food. We were excited to try the chef’s tasting menu, and the malawach with labneh was a delicious strong start. Downhill after that with remainder of the dishes fairly uniformly bitter and sour - not unexpected with the focus on fermentation, but without balance to counteract this. Not sorry that we went and kudos for the local sourcing and innovative approach, but sometimes experimentation doesn’t hit the mark and our experience was one of these times.

Everything about this restaurant is on point except the food. The execution. The space is great. The mood is great. There are too many people working in the kitchen but that’s not my problem. The menu is creative and ambitious and I appreciate that. The problem is the execution. Beets and squash and mushrooms need to be cut to the same size. Salt needs to be to be right. I don’t normally notice these things because they are fundamentals. The first things you learn at chef school. These are things they get right at Chik Fil A and Dennys. Nobody wants to see a perfectly good beet or squash ruined with a knife. When you read the reviews of this restaurant you see ordinary citizens volunteering to help this place and its owners. Literally donating their time and effort to help. The mood of the place is defensive. Refusing the gift being offered to them. It’s a manifestation of self destructive pride. All that said, I appreciate this restaurant for activating my gratitude for chefs and restaurants that get it right. Without pretense or fanfare.

Bata feels like it’s a cut above most places in Tucson. It could compete in terms of creativity, atmosphere. Some of the most unique food and gastronomy energy in Tucson. Would come here to impress guests from a bigger city. DJ was our waiter, he was professional and patient with us. Only down side for me personally was that some food components didn’t really work together. For example the trout was a delicious main dish (we got the preset menu with tasting and drinks). However it was fried and the batter/fry material was too oily and didn’t add much except some crispness to the fish. However the fish itself was lovely and did not need to be fried. The sauce also left an odd aftertaste for me but my husband liked it. Another dish, a toast with tartare…the bread was delicious, but too heavy and didn’t make sense with the tartare which was already very rich and fresh. Although they were both delicious together again, they didn’t really complement each other. Would come back for the drinks and desserts. The desserts are comparable to any place I have been to including outside the USA. Next time I’d order a la carte so I know what’s coming and I can ask for substitute when I think I’ll need it.

The dinner satisfied my curiosity since Bon Appetit recognized it as one of the best new restaurants in 2022. The ambience and service were great. The food was beautifully presented and tasty but was not special. We ordered 7 plates to share. The malawach was fluffy and crispy but the yogurt based dipping sauce was not complimentary to the taste and the cured egg yolk was just interesting words on the menu (sprinkled on the plate like salt and tasted just like salt). We liked the flamed oysters with caviar. The grilled carrots was good but the hummus was too salty to eat. The only excellent course out of 7 dishes we tried was the bay leaf ice cream with black pepper hazelnuts.

El lugar es muy bonito, los platillos están muy bien presentados, el servicio excelente. Los precios nos parecieron muy elevados.

We spent a significant amount of time choosing wine and both bottles we ordered were not in stock and each time they brought out bottles that were significantly more expensive. One time I understand. When it happened again it felt like a bait and switch. Things came without serving spoons and the mushroom skewers tasted like dirt. Otherwise there were a few plates we liked. Not worth the hype.

Kade Kirkendall

The service and atmosphere were quite nice. My old fashioned was excellent and the wine we ordered was very good as well. We had the cod and carnitas and both were good but not great. As others have mentioned, the portion sizes are very small, to the point that neither of us left satiated.

M
Mac Hutchins

I would not recommend the let us pick for you option. The first two courses were decent then the main dish was fatty pork and a bowl of beans which was very disappointing. Then to cap it off we were served a parsnip miso caramel sorbet that was actually terrible. Plus the menu says $65 a person but they charged us $70.. Maybe ordering specific items is the way to go.

I want BATA to succeed and it’s great to see it receive so much media attention lately! Beautiful presentation and ambiance for sure. Love the focus on local ingredients sourced within 20? miles of the restaurant and a rotating menu of small plates cooked from scratch. Unfortunately, the food fell spectacularly short of expectations, especially given its hype and extremely high prices. Consider the albacore tuna crudo, which probably sent us towards hypernatremia. While I initially thought the source of the salt was the dressing of caper brine, lemon juice, and olive oil, it turned out that the saline came from the tiny pieces of radishes, which literally tasted like pure salt, which then washed into the dressing to make sea water …overwhelming the natural flavors of the San Diego sourced fish. The beef taretare, for all of its acclaim, was similarly disappointing, as the buttermilk was so overpowering in quantity and saltiness that it buried the otherwise intricate flavors of the beef. The white Sonoran wheat tortilla accompanying the beef was cold and stale. People sometimes joke that poorly executed St Louis styled pizza has the texture of cardboard, but I’d say this particular tortilla came the closest to a cardboard experience . The tortilla also suffered from the same problem that plagued other dishes: a bizarrely uneven distribution of salt; some parts of the tortilla tasted like just cardboard whereas other parts tasted like cardboard dipped in saline solution . How does a single , utterly tiny piece of tortilla end up so unevenly executed ? You can probably find an affordable Sonoran restaurant in south Tucson and have a far more enjoyable tortilla …for much, much cheaper. Overall, for such tiny and expensive portions (both dishes together probably weighed less than an apple, for which we paid $50), the meal left us remarkably unsatisfied and thirsty. Thankfully one of BATA’s best offerings were its beautiful artisan? ice cubes (extra dense, extra clear), which incentivized me to keep drinking water.

Stuff shoulf be trained not to constantly interrupt people talking and not to make out of retiring the dishes the main event. About the food - i have no idea how this place got considered for the top 50 restaurants in America ! is this how the future looks like ? it sounds terrible and skinny if so. We ordered a lot of food. And all the desserts. Nothing was good. The portions were small and tasteless. The rabbit tasted like pork. The fowl was unedible. The only good thing was the bread. We ended up paying 210$ for 2 people (with just one cocktail) and being extremely hungry at the end of the night. Also, for a fancy place to not have espresso is unbelievable. Only dripped coffee, and that served in a huge bowl of a mug with a napkin and a dinnerplate underneath it ?? horrible.

This was a memorable dining experience for sure. The presentation was fantastic and the service was not bad at all. As some of the other reviews said, the portions are tiny. Some are literally one bite for $8-$10. I don’t mind paying a lot for a good meal, but this was NOT a good meal. We tried all the appetizers on the menu. They are trying way to hard to be unique and trendy, but have totally missed the mark. The flavors don’t mesh well and some are downright awful. It was comical to watch the faces of the other patrons as they tried to eat what they had ordered. Judging by the rave reviews from others, different menus had to have been much better. We opted to forgo any entrees and tried the apple desert which was mediocre but by far the best thing we tried. In the end, we spent around $110 after tip for enough food to feed a small child. Would I recommend this place? Depends on what you are looking for. While I would never eat here again, I have to admit it was one of the most entertaining dining experiences I have ever had and I will never forget it.

Porciones exageradamente pequeñas está bien que sea gourmet pero se pasan. La cocteleria no es nada buena, tragos malos y caros.

I was in town this past weekend and took my girlfriend out to dinner. The restaurant looked amazing. The atmosphere and decor were superb. The drinks were fantastic. We did a chef’s choice sampling in 5 courses. The only course that was good was the desert. The other 4 courses were not cooked well and bland, completely void of good flavor. For a meal 1/4 of that price I paid I would have expected more. Maybe we just ate there on an off night though. They nailed everything but the food.

A
Ashlee Rocchi

We had high hopes for our dinner, but was disappointed by their lack of professionalism and hygiene. During our visit, we noticed the chef using his cell phone while handling food, which raises serious concerns about cross-contamination and food safety. We reached out via email to address this issue, giving the restaurant a chance to respond, but unfortunately, they failed to acknowledge or address our concerns. Proper hygiene practices are essential in any dining establishment, and the lack of accountability here is concerning. I hope they take this feedback seriously and prioritize their customers’ health moving forward.

T
Tasha Vargas

This was a place suggested by a friend. The atmosphere was very nice. The cocktails I tried were tasty but that’s where it ended. We ordered some bread and that was good but the price was not justifiable. It worsened when we ordered entrees. I ordered a squash dish and took 2 bites. It was way too salty and undercooked to the extreme. A friend ordered the steak and vegetables and was chewing the whole night on the over cooked steak. The pricing did not match the food quality and for that, I won’t be back.

H
Heather ten Broek

Not worth the price at all. The food is mediocre quality and terrible taste. Their drinks tasted awful and were severely overpriced. In our group of 4 we ordered the special where they decide what to bring you. We had to split plates as they only brought us 2 plates to share. The portions were so small it left us still hungry at the end of the meal. We thought we'd have a plate each but this restaurant is so cheap they'll only give you one to split. Save your money and go to a quality restaurant that doesn't rip you off. I deserve a refund for their subpar service and quality of food.
