An absolute delight and a must go to place while in Cornwall! The building is stunning, the team is genuinely lovely but also made of knowledgable and professional people and the food is just the best. Being the newest arrival from the Adam Handling group all the expectations were definitely met 😍 Loved everything and everyone and can’t wait to be back for more!

Tartan Fox is a must visit if you are in Cornwall! Just 15 minutes outside of central Newquay, this gem is tucked away within gorgeous surrounding nature; setting the scene for the stunning experience. Right away you get the sense of an amazing harmony between a comfortable and approachable vibe, and British cuisine done amazingly well. Tartan Fox does such an amazing job at maintaining that welcoming pub environment that everyone loves, mixed with elevated delicious food, without being the slightest bit pretentious. Everyone we interacted with from the team was so warm and friendly, the artwork and decor was stunning to look at, and of course the food was phenomenal. Can’t wait to return.

Fantastic place, staff would get a 6* if possible, however a couple of inconsistencies with food quality did let it down as the snacks were incredible and the chicken butter and hash browns/caviar blew us away, the starters themselves were a little bit bland, the crab starter tasted of essentially nothing and felt rushed, and yet the mains steak / market fish were absolutely fantastic, we would love to come again and perhaps its just knowing what to pick with course choices.

Blooming brilliant. Delicious flavourful food. Roast beef and roast pork super. Attentive friendly service. Refreshing change not to have a service charge automatically applied to the bill. Will return next time in Cornwall.

Food, service, atmosphere - all absolutely incredible. My partner and I went for a Sunday Roast - I had the pork roast and my partner the beef , great portion sizes and well worth the money. The Toffee Apple crumble was the star of the show! Will definitely be visiting again!

Firstly the warm welcome, atmosphere and the entire team's investment in providing a smooth and polished operation throughout were absolutely phenomenal. The food was truly delicious—flavourful, passionately executed, and presented with flair. I believe this was possibly one of the best meals I have ever had. The warm bread and chicken butter, the roast chicken and accompaniments and the chocolate/ coffee soft-serve were standout dishes. Thank you for an exceptional experience. Ten out of ten.

Incredible food and service! Josh the GM was amazing, the whole meal felt very personal and he got to know us to be able to accurately select wines and food that we would love and he did a great job - the cheese doughnuts and deep fried Mars bar were the cherry on the icing on the cake, really simple and comforting but so well done! Very reasonably priced when you consider pubs in general at a lower price points than here have all increased, making better quality food more accessible. The whole team at the tartan fox is were excellent and I’m not surprised to see they got 41st out of the top 50 gastro pubs in the UK last week - we will be back! Thank you ☺️

We had an outstanding meal at Adam Handling’s pub restaurant, The Tartan Fox. The pub itself is absolutely beautiful—warm, inviting, and full of character. We started with the cheese donuts and lobster hash browns, both of which were exceptional and packed with flavour. The star of the meal was the roast dinner, cooked to perfection and easily one of the best I’ve had. For dessert, the deep-fried Mars bar with ice cream was pure indulgence and the perfect end to an already amazing meal. Overall, The Tartan Fox delivers incredible food in a stunning setting. Highly recommended!

Hands down the best pub Sunday roast we have ever had. I would genuinely consider coming back here (even though it’s a 5 hour drive from us). The chicken fat butter was unbelievable and I didn’t know I liked Kale until I had it here. The scotch egg is also a must try! The staff were amazing, cannot think of a single to improve.

This was an unexpected and very welcome pleasure. Coming to see family in Cornwall we travelled down in or campervan and booked at the Carveynick holiday park it was open all year, had hard standing pitches, and a pub within walking distance. We booked a table online and glad we did as it was quite busy from about 7pm. We often eat in pubs when away in our van but this place brought that to a whole new level for us. A varied menu, with dishes that we never come across before caused us to stop and think for a while. Starters was the soup of the day; apple and celeriac was absolutely stunning. For mains we opted for the catch of the day with was plaice on the bone with a brown sauce with mushrooms and capers. The potatoes and broccoli seaweed were the perfect complement to a wonderfully cooked fish. For sweet we opted for the late summer fruit and ginger trifle. This meal was clearly not your standard pub fayre but it was really great leaving us comfortably full. Yes it was a higher price than you would normally expect for pub food but this was by no means standard pub food. I could not recommend this place more.

Wow, what a place! My fiancé and I were in the area for a little staycation and wanted to find somewhere to eat along our route. After trying to find some places to go we stumbled across The Tartan Fox, a quick look at the menu and we were sold at “Cheese Doughnuts”. So along we went hoping there was room. We were so warmly greeted upon arrival like we were regulars, we knew we’d found a gem. The decor of the place is just stunning, I will definitely be pinching a few of these ideas for our wedding next year! We were seated downstairs by the log burner, which was an absolute dream. Also meant our dog could have a snooze by the fire. We obviously immediately sought out the cheese doughnuts and ordered those, and oh my they were just divine. The mains we had were also probably some of the best meals we’ve ever had. Apparently we were the first to try the rack of pork and beef short rib. Just…wow. We’ve never savoured a meal so much. Just exactly what you want in a meal, nothing too faffed with or presented exotically, just really really good food. Also gherkin gravy?! What a revelation! The puddings we had were just as delicious, deep fried mars bar, what’s not to love!! All the front of house were so lovely and welcoming, such amazing service is often hard to find. Although we may not be around to visit again soon, we were made aware of the other restaurants around the country, we will certainly be making a trip to those. If you’re making a trip to Cornwall, make sure a meal at The Tartan Fox is on your to-do list!!

We came to visit family and called to see if there was a table free. We were NOT disappointed. The staff were great, very attentive & helpful. From start to finish we were wowed with the food. Loved the dessert of Parkin, Brie, Parmasan & honey totally not what we expected, recommended by Zoe (fab waitress, alright my lovlies)! Told my son & his wife about it, they will definately be visiting.

Absolutely amazing place to eat, food I would 100% recommend and would love to go back! Visited this lovely place while on holiday, they are dog friendly and this is within a campground. Location is still beautiful as it’s out of the way but the interior is stunning, such a cozy vibe in the summer and I can imagine also the winter too! Super dog friendly and the staff were really friendly. We had a mixture for meals and all were absolutely superb, the flavour was amazing, the portion size, perfect! The meat quality was delicious, the smoked flavours, the grilled section for the steak was cooked perfectly. All flavours combined worked so well. The staff were friendly and especially Niamh that answered our curious questions regarding the menu and how the food is cooked. I would recommend this restaurant and especially if you have a dog.

Wonderful and delicious food. Fantastic service. Very accommodating of our dog. We ordered alot of food and enjoyed all the dishes. Would highly recommend for anyone in the area. The scotch egg was very light and perfectly cooked. The tatare was seasoned well. And the trifle was a delicious treat.

Enjoyed a fantastic Sunday dinner with friends here. Service was friendly and accommodating. Atmosphere was cosy and relaxed. Everyone enjoyed their meals, especially the Scotch egg starter and trifle dessert. I've already recommended The Tartan Fox to a number of my friends.

Absolutely divine dining experience. We took our 18 month old cocker spaniel with us, he was greeted as warmly as we were. The food was mouth-wateringly delicious. I’d highly recommend the cheese doughnuts, light but so flavoursome. The batter on the fish was light but crispy, the quality of the fish was incredible. The pork chop was melt in the mouth with the most amazing apple sauce. Everything was perfectly cooked and served. The staff are a credit to the establishment; friendly, knowledgeable and ready to help. Thank you so much for an awesome dining experience ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

An incredible dining experience. We came last night, and this restaurant did not disappoint! My personal favourite dish was the caviar hash browns. Our waitress was excellent too, sorry we didn’t catch her name. We are coming back to Cornwall in November for our mini moon, and we will be back to try the winter menu! Can’t wait. Thank you for an amazing meal. Harriet & Jono

Outstanding evening at The Tartan Fox. The food was amazing, the service was on point all evening and the pub had a traditional and warming atmosphere. We will definitely be back.

Went for my Birthday in March & what a treat 😳 The staff were incredible, friendly, informative, superb services. The food was exceptional, we could not fault in any way everything tasted so so good. Slightly larger vegetable sides would be good 😊 Loverly touch of a birthday card & the happy birthday chocolate on my dessert. The only small criticism would be the high prices on Wine, we aren’t London !! add 2 or 3 more reasonable prices for us locals. However we will return 😁

We went to the restaurant with my 2 kids, the staff was so friendly and helpful, they also serve kids menu for my younger one. Both the starters and main dishes were amazing, would highly recommend the oysters and the lobster tart from the main. I usually prefer the raw oyster, but I tried the fried one today and it was really good. The batter is so crunchy and crispy, and with the sauce slightly spicy, the whole combo works together so well. For the main, would high recommend the bbq mussels and the lamb rump. Both are so tender and juicy, and you could tell the chef did pay an effort on the sauce of each dish! Would definitely come back and try the other restaurants in the same group.

We eat out a lot and we were looking forward to dining here. We weren't disappointed ! Wow where to start !! The food is amazing as you would expect. A really diverse menu and wine list. You are literally spoilt for choice. I had the Haggis Scotch Eggs and then the Hot Smoked Lamb Rump with Asparagus and Wild Garlic. Truly amazing. All the staff are super friendly without being over the top . Giving advice about the food and drinks. Outside eating area which is dog friendly. This place is definitely recommended, can't wait to go back and try something else off the menu 🙂

10/10 would recommend. Definitely visiting again, The steak fillet was to die for, cooked on a bbq, it's like butter melting in your mouth. Would recommend the fox sauce too. For a pub/restaurant in the middle of nowhere these guys have nailed it. There aren't enough stars to give.

We went for a meal today for my girlfriends birthday and the food and service were both stunning, a card left on the table hand signed by the staff for my girlfriends birthday, very attentive service and incredible food, very highly recommend The chicken butter and bread and smoked haddock tart were highlights but I couldn’t fault anything about our experience, thank you very much to the staff working today

I visited today for lunch as a belated birthday gift from my niece and her husband. What an absolute treat it was. I've enjoyed lunch at The Ugly Butterfly so had high expectations and wasn't disappointed. I'm a huge fan of Adam's food and ethos. Our meal was faultless. Every dish was exemplary. The staff are attentive and knowledgeable. A birthday card signed by the staff and presented on arrival was a lovely personal touch. The pub has a great relaxed atmosphere with some very interesting artwork on the walls. A roaring fire just added to the ambience. I will very much look forward to a return visit.

One of the best meals I’ve ever had and the service was the best I’ve had anywhere. As a touring musician I’ve been fortunate enough to eat in some fantastic places around the world, but this might just be the best service and food combination I’ve ever experienced. There were 8 of us and everyone loved it! The haggis scotch egg was immense and the steak was sublime! Thanks to the team and in particular the wonderful waitress who made us feel so welcome. I’m unfortunately not from Cornwall, but regardless I’ll 100% be back. Thank you guys for the world class meal.

Had a great meal here tonight. We had the venison and the tomahawk steak. Both were incredible. The flavours and texture of the venison are rarely achieved by others. The tomahawk was the best I have ever had. The chef certainly has mastered the art of cooking on a fire. This was trimmed perfectly. It was a thick, juicy perfectly cooked wall of meat. The chips were proper crispy big chips too. If you love a big steak, this is the best I have eaten world over from the finest restaurants.

I can't recommend The Tartan Fox enough! From the moment we walked in, the warm, cozy atmosphere made us feel right at home, especially sitting next to the crackling log burner. The food was absolutely outstanding—every dish was packed with flavor and beautifully presented, showcasing the best of local ingredients. What really set the evening apart, though, was the exceptional service. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, making us feel welcome from start to finish. It was my wife’s birthday, and the team went above and beyond to make it memorable, surprising her with a series of thoughtful treats throughout the evening. It truly felt like they went the extra mile to ensure we had a special celebration. A perfect blend of excellent food, welcoming service, and a delightful atmosphere—The Tartan Fox has certainly earned a place at the top of our list. We’ll be back soon!

Excellent venue, Food and attentive staff. We went for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. Innovative food selection. Particularly liked the selection of well cooked vegetable sides. Deep fried Mars bars weren't to my liking. But felt compelled to try them while I was there. Great for a special occasion, but a little expensive for a regular Sunday lunch.

Amazing Christmas Day Lunch! Cannot find fault with anything the staff were brilliant, cheerful and accommodating. The food was delicious, beautifully presented, and plentiful. The food ethics were very thoughtful, and as for the port n cheese.....I was disappointed I had no room for more! It really was freeflowing. Yes, it was a bit pricey, but not much different from other venues locally, and still very good value! We all had a really special memorable visit! Can't wait for our anniversary in feb, to go back .

Absolutely superb lunch and can't wait to return. From the moment we arrived, we were excited and energised by the staff we met in the garden! They were full of fun and enthusiasm for the pub/restaurant. We sat next to the woodburner and we were so well looked after by the team from wine and non alcoholic pairings to selections from the menu. Would highly recommend the hashbrown, truffle mayo and caviar - a real treat and such an amazing way to start the meal. We had the monk fish and short rib... both seriously tasty and full of great flavour. The chocolate pud and deep fried mars bar were simply sensational! (As was the pudding wine!). Honestly could recommend this place enough. A little pricey but worth it for a very special treat. Thank you so much to the whole team x

Absolutely amazing experience at The tartan Fox near Newquay. Took a trip to Cornwall from London last summer and stumbled upon The Tartan Fox. Could not recommend it more! The food was excellent, the pub was beautiful and the staff was very friendly and attentive! Ended up coming multiple times during our trip because the food was so good, 10/10!

On Sunday we arrived for lunch and, as usual, the carpark was almost full at 1pm, showing how popular this place is. Fortunately, we found the last remaining space in the main carpark, but there is overflow parking available at the caravan park next door. We had expected that the menu would be the same as our previous visit but on arrival we were delighted to be told that Adam himself was in the kitchen and during the few days he had been in residence he had revised the menu to include some new dishes and already started on the Christmas decorations! We were able to try some different starters and desserts but still went for the Roast Pork Belly which was excellent. We had a very nice table by the window upstairs and the service from the lovely Lottie and Zoey was superb. Both food and hospitality was excellent and so we can understand why it is so popular and the need to book to avoid disappointment.

Enjoyed the best ever Sunday roast today! All meals were delicious, beautifully prepared and served. Plenty of sides and gravy too! Service was just right… engaging and efficient. 10 out of 10! We’ll be back!

Just had the most incredible meal here at the Tartan Fox. From the moment we walked in, to the second we said goodbye, the service was impeccable and the atmosphere extremely welcoming. A special shout out to the waitress who lives in Foxhole (sorry didn’t catch her name!) she was so lovely the whole night - it felt like we’d made a new friend by the end of the night! Everything we ate was out of this world. The whole menu is elevated comfort food and it was just absolutely delicious. I especially recommend the cheese doughnuts - which I already can’t stop thinking about! This was our first visit but we will certainly be back. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary and we were greeted with a congratulations from the host and an adorable Tartan Fox card. Just little touches that made the night so special. Thank you!

We visited The Tartan Fox for Sunday lunch and it completely reset the standard for what a roast should be. We started with the cheese doughnuts and the Scotch egg. Both were outstanding. The doughnuts were light, rich and addictive without being heavy. The Scotch egg was perfectly cooked with a runny yolk and properly seasoned sausage. Already a strong start. Then came the beef roast. The beef was beautifully pink and clearly rested properly. The gravy was deep, rich and full of flavour. The vegetables were cooked with care, not just thrown on the plate. But the real headline was the roast potatoes. Genuinely a 10 out of 10. Crisp, golden, glassy outside. Fluffy inside. Seasoned properly. No grease. Absolute perfection. Finished with the chocolate mousse which was smooth, balanced and not overly sweet. A proper end to a serious meal. What made it even better was that Adam Handling himself was in the kitchen during service. Seeing the chef whose name is above the door actually on the pass overseeing everything says a lot about the standards here. This isn’t just a good pub roast. It’s the best roast dinner I’ve had in Cornwall, and I’ve had some strong contenders. Already planning a return visit.

Dined here of the evening. Food was delicious and the cocktail gorgeous, for me the glass was too small. The bread and chicken butter was to die for. Lovely atmosphere but there was a couple of dogs in and barked a few times.

Lovely cosy place, delicious food. The most delicious sticky toffee pudding. However, removing one star for the following reasons: Charging £1.50 for tap water only because it is served in their own branded glass bottles. Charging £2.00 for charity. I already give to my own charities and I really dislike when restaurants try to charge me for a charity that I do not know about.

Disappointing experience for lunch. Food very underwhelming for the price. The only thing on the menu that my sister wanted (beef short rib) for her 50th birthday was off so she got a burger which tasted of nothing except generic burger. Cheese doughnuts were boring, and I don’t appreciate being told I have to eat them with my fingers as they were messy and no finger bowl or extra napkin was provided. Coronation chicken hash browns were beyond salty and all I could taste was curry powder, not good at all. My pollack with warm tartare was also disappointing, the fish was bland, nothing special. Half the beans were hard. The sauce needed a spoon not a fork. Rosemary salted chips excessively salted. Hispi with red pepper was undercooked and hard. Deep fried mars bar nearly broke my teeth, didn’t enjoy it all. All the drinks and wines were great. Server quite pushy with the wines and extras. Toilets are communal, hate that. Overall, overpriced and not good food. Michelin star chef? Must have been off today. Oh and I emailed in advance about my sisters special birthday and was promised a birthday plaque on her dessert that never arrived either.

Having recently dined at The Frog in London, which is absolutely sensational I thought we would try The Tarten whilst on holiday in Cornwall. Acknowledging the different styles of the two, I was surprised how worlds apart they are in every way - yes the frog is a luxury, high end dining experience and the Tarten Fox is an affordable gastro pub but with both having Adam Handling above the door I’d expect a particular level of standard. The venue is nice, decor well thought about and good spacing between each table. The service needs improving, a lovely welcoming by the gentleman manager but the seated service lacks attention to detail - my partner spilt some sauce from his starter on the table, the waitress noticed it when clearing the plates as she picked a crumb up from the sauced area, she didn’t return to wipe it. A second waitress placed new cutlery in the sauced area. Small thing but a quick wipe would have gone a long way. The food was a good standard of pub food, although a few negatives - the burger lacked flavour and the chicken butter was foul, a strong offensive odour and not at all the same taste as The Frog - a real disappointment as I’ve craved the chicken butter since my visit to the frog. Something not quite right there. The menu is a little misleading, desert says coffee and chocolate but it comes out as a tiramisu style desert - very different to the description, desert was nice but the misleading menu description could be a problem for some. Overall, a 3/5 - nice, pleasant, but not worth shouting about. I can’t help feel that you’re paying for the name here, as opposed to the quality. It’s an affordable option to be able to say you’ve dined in Adam Handlings restaurant but some simple changes could really improve this place. Bill came to approximately £120 for 3 drinks, bread, 2 starters, 2 mains and 1 desert.

What a beautiful restaurant! Now, not everyone may notice this, but they definitely have some kind of electric aroma dispenser which goes off at regular intervals. At first I thought something was burning, then my daughter said 'oh they like it to have an oaky smell', well after a couple of hours that smell got right in the back of my throat. It was just horrible!!!! I like to smell my actual food. That nasty scent for me, was really off putting. Yuk! Starters were amazing! I can highly recommend the cheese doughnuts. We had Sunday Roast and the potatoes looked amazing but lots of them were hard inside. They had run out of Belly Pork so offered Pork Chops instead which, too be frank were fairly dry. Dessert was lovely too. Service was OK, but it was noticeable that one waitress would turn on the smile for the table and then turn around and roll her eyes to her colleagues, and have a bit of a moan every chance she got. Not great! My children were paying the bill as it was mothers day, I felt so sorry for them as the restaurant added a 'charity donation'. They didn't ask, they didn't even explain what charity and why!? I didn't want to interfere, as the kids were sorting it, but I wish I had now. I have no idea what that was about, and frankly it's just wrong! It was a nice meal, but the food and service didn't match the price for me. Sorry. ...... and that awful smell!!!! Yuk!!!

I came here for a Sunday roast (vegan) and what I was served was an insult. Calling a cauliflower drowned in katsu curry sauce with a side of cabbage, potatoes, and sweetcorn a “roast” is laughable. This wasn’t a creative twist, it was a complete cop-out. No gravy, no roast trimmings, no meat substitute—nothing even remotely resembling what anyone would recognise as a roast. The atmosphere may be nice and the staff friendly, but none of that makes up for being misled and served a random, spicy curry dish (for £22!!!) instead of the roast I came for. Don’t advertise a Sunday roast if you can’t be bothered to actually deliver one. It’s misleading, disappointing, and frankly lazy

E

We booked for a valentines meal however we left really disappointed. The staff and service were brilliant but the food was extremely poor, we were not the only ones to complain as the two tables next to us were saying exactly the same. A small steak a bowl of chips a few bits of lettuce for £70, and the sticky toffee pudding very dry. Maybe this was just a bad night but we will not be retuning
