Casa Herrera is a popular Mexican restaurant known for its outstanding service, friendly staff (like Nettie and Amanda), and welcoming atmosphere. Many rave about the green chile chicken enchiladas. Some find the salsa too cumin-heavy, and the food can sometimes lack flavor.

This was our first visit to Casa Herrera in Abilene. We were very happy with the food and price. Very clean and efficient. Very well taken care of by Dannielle. Looking forward to going back.
Always excellent food, fresh, and tasty. One of my favorite places to eat in Abilene. I especially love the lunch buffet. They obviously pay extra care and attention to make sure the quality is very high at all times.
Great family owned business! Delicious food and super attentive service. Only place I can find rice made like my abuela made it! Still the same great food, a true family business. Since 1977. Delicious!
Good Tex mex food. Great service Netty is probably the best waitress I've had in 20 years. Fair prices
This is a great local Mexican food place to eat. Their service is always good and the atmosphere is authentic. They have a buffet option but on Sundays the buffet has guacamole on it! Also, sweet or unsweetened tea is included with Sunday's buffet. Their menu items are also fantastic. They do serve alcohol. I highly recommend eating here.
Food was delicious! Got the tampico plate that had lots of variety. Our waiter Logan especially deserves a shout out! Funny and friendly and would definitely come again for him to be our waiter
I have eat the #29 and the #27 and have enjoyed them both. My wife likes the sour cream enchiladas. We both like the 5 layer dip. And I enjoy the Flan!
The best Mexican restaurant in Abilene. This has become our favorite place to dine in. The atmosphere, the waiters and waitresses are the best!!! All the employees are so nice and very friendly. We love 💕this restaurant. Until next time “Casa Herrera!” Thank you so much!! 😍
Yum! My fav place to go, always a treat to me! Their charro beans are so good, wish I had some right now...so if you like beans get these versus refried. Lots of tomatoes and onions and flavor. I love their iced tea, not too sweet. I usually order the same thing everytime but in the past have tried different things, and haven't been disappointed. Servers are always attentive and so nice!
I just Love this Restaurant and there severs one that I have to mention is the sever Sue . The woman and men are all great I wish I had them when I ran a restaurant. They are all so caring and gave me the best service and gave me what I needed and they do with a smile and respect. I have never seen any severs actually help one another and clean as they go. It is so refreshing to see that and that they care about there employers Business. I would like to say that is so rare and I salute them for a great time and excellent service and experience. Thank you so much Richard Francis Brogren
Con Anthony eating enchiladas. Nice vibe
They were have nice it it was About 5 minutes before close time and they still let us come in and they were so sweet about it and don’t let tell you about the food it was so good it was like I was in San Antonio thank you for let us have dinner and you stuff are so sweet and the girl was help us was so sweet and was always check on us
We loved this place! Great nachos and enchiladas tacos and margaritas! Cute inside and great wait staff.
Every time we go to Abilene Texas and want real authentic Mexican food we go to Casa Herrera. I order the beef nachos which were very delicious, I had them add jalapenos and bring extra salsa. My husband ordered The steak and enchiladas. Mannnn that steak was seasoned to perfection and cooked just right, medium well!!! The salsa is always delicious with just the right amount of kick and those chips were fresh and hot. The service was very great. Our waitress, and I didn't get her name was very attentive to our table. We didn't run out of drinks, chips or salsa. The atmosphere was very inviting, music playing the family members walking around checking on the customers. If you're ever in Abilene stop by. You will NOT regret it. Be Blessed till next time
Second Visit to Casa Herrera! Great food, awesome atmosphere, and service was stellar, ordered the three beef enchiladas with sides of rice, beans, and guacamole and a crunchy beef taco. and was amazingly good as expected and still awesome! We were stuffed! Will dine again! 💯 recommend for a nice quiet place to eat some amazing food! Sorry no photos because you got to check it out yourself!
Hot sauce could use more cilantro to it. But they arrange a small shell under your taco so your taco doesn't get soggy. Another restaurant does this to. Great idea. Excellent cheese sauce tamales we're great.
Always good food always good service
Great place for lunch by the mall. Server brought us a pitcher of tea for the table! Good lunch for a decent price and friendly staff!
We ate here for the first time 3/30/21. The gentleman that waited on us was fantastic! He was incredibly busy but continuously checked on us and his other tables with a genuinely good attitude. Our food came to the table quickly and was reasonably good. The atmosphere is comfortable and welcoming. Overall, I am very impressed and wish that we had come sooner.
1st time here, quickly sat, and greeted straight away by server. Made suggestions and I opted for guacamole. Different than what Iam typically used to, but was very delicious and creamy. The salsa, was very unique and delicious. The chips were very good and crunchy, the more I ate the better they got! Had the lunch taco salad supreme with shredded chicken. I used the remaining guacamole and salsa as dressing, and ate it with the chips. Was very good! Very impressed and would recommend. I took pictures but am unable to add them to this post.🙂
Always a nice quiet place to get a good meal.
Awesome food reasonably priced, great margaritas & good service besides. Don't think about it, just go!
Love this place. Good is delicious
Our server Don was amazing, never had an empty glass, our salsa and chips were plentiful. Great personality and the food was delicious! First time there and will not be the last. Thank you Don and thank you Casa Herrera!
We've eaten here several times in the past. This time we arrived couldnt dine at this establishment because they were closed for vacation... such is the nature of supporting small businesses... we'll try them again as should you.
Went with the family for dinner and had the beef fajitas for two. They were delicious. My wife had the chicken enchiladas with green sauce and sour cream sauce. They were great as well. Really enjoyed the chips and salsa and the service was excellent. Will be back.
Great food and outstanding service. I really like this family owned restaurant. Surprisingly, it's rare to find a buffet style Mexican restaurant that offers chef quality food at a modest price, how do they do it! The food is really good. I've tried and tried to imitate their rice without success, so I've given up and I just order their's. Even though they only offer a buffet during lunch hour, they are an excellent choice for dinner. Their dinner entrees are excellent. I enjoy the atmosphere, cleanliness and service and you will too. Enjoy...
Update: returned, never disappoints. Fresh and hot! Outstanding food and service. Was very impressed watching the bus person unwrap unused utensils and put them in the dirty dish bucket. The server (#7) was outstanding. Will definitely be back
My husband and I had lunch at Casa Herrera Restaurant today, and the food was so delicious and kept perfectly warm. From the chips and salsa to our main courses, everything was amazing and the prices are very affordable. Plus, our waitress was very professional and extremely helpful. The owners were also friendly and appreciative of our business. The restaurant's atmosphere was cozy and clean, and the decor was so Mexico... We loved it!
This is my first time here and the food is phenomenal. I’m visiting from out of town. The service is excellent. They make their own chips and salsa in house. I had a great experience.
I love this place! We got here when it was busy, and we were still seated quickly. Our food arrived just as fast and it was delicisio!! Our server Marie was amazing! If you are in Abilene you owe it to yourself to go.
I have never had a bad experience here. Food is always delicious! Staff always friendly! Even take out is great! You get chips n hot sauce! lol ❤️❤️
Just passing thru town and found this place. Really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere of the restaurant.
Excellent salsa is always a good indicator of the Mexican food experience. Chile relleno exceeded expectation too! I’d add photos but as usual it was gone before I remembered to take a pic 🤩
First time. We were visiting a niece in abilene and she recommended this place.
First time tonight, Wife and I enjoyed it very much, our waiter was the best, Will be back again
Love the beef and cheese enchiladas the Spanish rice is delicious too . Salsa has great flavor pairs well with the fresh chips. Liz is pleasant and nice I enjoy talking with her , a excellent place to dine for authentic Mexican food (:
Always good I go here with my mom when I visit from Washington
We've been eating there since the 80s. Best chicken fajitas in town in my opinion. Great atmosphere and service
I've been here twice, both times we were quickly seated and our servers were very awesome. There are very limited healthy options, I'm not super upset over this except when I'm with those who want to eat here I can't eat with them. I know we'll be back, my party very much enjoyed their experience.
I’m usually not the one to leave reviews but I was extremely impressed with everything about this restaurant. The atmosphere was very welcoming, the food was delicious, and our server was beyond amazing. I want to thank the host for such a warm welcoming, our waitress Amanda for the spectacular service, and the lady at the register for the kind jesters. I highly recommend this restaurant and will be returning. Thanks again.
Classic mom and pop family restaurant. Spot on margaritas! Nothing overly trendy but consistently good food on a classic plate. One of my favorite places to go!
We had a party of 17 and all the food came out hot and very good. Service was outstanding.
Service was super on point. The food was delicious! The only negative thing I could mention is that the oil they use to fry the chips is getting really close to needing to be charged. They were starting to get that old fry oil aftertaste. Which is not super noticeable unless one eats a chip by itself.
Great food, comfortable environment. Exceptional employees who have always gone above and beyond making for a great dining experience. Been coming here for many years! And will continue coming for many more! My favorite Mexican food restaurant in Abilene since I was a little girl, and now it is my daughter's favorite as well. Keep it up Casa Herrera family!
Some of the best green chile chicken enchiladas I've ever had! And I am SUPER picky on chicken enchiladas! My husband said his beef enchiladas were good as well. Rice was pretty tasty as well as the beans. The chips were good but hot sauce not for me. Ill definitely be thinking about those chicken enchiladas until my next visit. 🤤
This was the first time we came here, we were in Abilene and driving down the street. We knew we wanted Mexican food, we were passing the restaurant and my husband said yay or nay. I said yes, we went inside and were greeted and seated. Our server was Nettie, she went above and beyond to make our experience there the best. Nettie was very attentive and friendly, we ordered fajitas and the Mexican platter. The food was excellent and the portions were so huge we brought some home, we will definitely be going back to visit our friend Nettie and getting more of the excellent food.
Very good experience, I was met quickly and seated promptly. Staff was friendly and attentive. Restaurant was clean and staff cleared and cleaned empty tables. The salsa and chips were amazing. Remainder of my food came out quick, served very hot, and had great flavor. Definitely will return.
Great food and atmosphere. Great hosts and a great server. His shift was up, and he introduced me to my new server just as great. Smiles and eagernesss to make sure your visit was unforgettable. Strawberry Margaritas were awesome! They have real fruit in them and they come in a mug so ditch the straw and drink up. Shrimp Fajitas were delicious and plenty of food. Fyi Menudo on Sundays. Definitely recommend!
The service was wonderful and the restaurant was clean. I love all the Christmas lights, and the prices are reasonable. The only thing is the food just isn't that amazing. The chili rellanos are soggy, and filled with queso(?) Instead of cheese. The rice is so so, better when drowned in salsa, the beans were fine. I think the chips are too thick. But my mother-in-law loves it and the service is great so we'll be back lol.
I’m a real Mexican so this is going to hurt. The food is not the greatest. I mean I don’t expect much out here. But if you can’t get the rice and beans right🙅🏽♀️ . If you like Tex-Mex then go for it. You’ll love this place. For Authentic Mexican food Go to Celso’s the wait is horrible but the food is on another level.
We love eating at Casa Herrera great food and atmosphere. Wish they still had lunch buffet all you can eat. All their food is good Wait staff is good also. Enjoy the building and decorations. Owners always polite. Good prices for good food.
Had quesadillas and they were good, but needed more cheese to hold them together. Husband had enchiladas and said they were really good. Will be back!
We were seated right away (party of 4) the hostess was very friendly and our server was awesome! She was very attentive and very sweet. The food was delicious. The chips and salsa were so good!
My grandma has loved coming here for the longest. It is very delicious and authentic. Guacamole is the one thing I check everywhere I go and the avocados are authentic here. I love it . A great place to get together with family!
The food was great! The people that work their not so much! We waited at least 15min for her to ask if we wanted a drink and then another 15 min to eat the drinks and chips. The staff as a whole seemed like they all needed a break or an attitude
We had a good experience, their menu descriptions could use some work as we were unaware all sauce was an extra $2. They were very nice and took it off our bill anyways. Very nice staff we were greeted and told by everyone passing that we would be seated in a moment, our waitress was nice and attentive and we saw similar from other wait staff. The food was very seasoned and very tasty, the salsa was spicy but the green Chile and everything else was not. The green Chile did have very nice flavor. Overall was happy, the price was a little high but not absurdly so.
The service was excellent! The flavor of the food was excellent!!! The only down side was that the whole family began experiencing stomach issues the next morning. Not sure what exactly was the culprit but we enjoyed out meal.
We arrived 30 minutes before they were closing. Didn't bother them at all. The service was fantastic, and the food order was spot on. The server was very efficient, prompt, and personable. It was obvious she wanted to make our meal as enjoyable as possible.
I'm a regular here I love this place but this last time they overcooked my steak
Picked up take out again, and it was very good. I waited less than 5 minutes. Really like the place. We ordered 2 servings of Chille Rellanos. Only proble we had was when I got home with them, neither one was Chille Rellano. Whatever it was, it wasn't bad, but we wanted Chille Rellanos.
Not as flavorful as I had hoped. Took a while to get the flour tortillas we ordered.
Have been a few other times, food was good. Went 5/27 was sorely disappointed. Food was over powered with chilli powder instead of just being flavorful. Rice was a brown color and was flavorless. The best part of the visit was the chips and salsa
I love their lunch specials, but their salsa has way too much cumin in it! I judge a Mexican food place by their salsa and will often pick where I want to eat based on how much I like their salsa, since I add it to my tacos and mix it with queso when eating chips.
Good chips & atmosphere! Salsa had strong cumin flavor, but tasty. Waitress was busy, but kept up and did a great job! Crowded after church on Sunday so it must be a favorite!
February 24, 2024 Our go to Tex-Mex place. I had the Herrera special #5. One Tamale, 2 beef enchiladas, 1 taco, beans and rice and guacamole. My lady had a children's plate , a beef enchilada with rice and beans. Our server was very friendly and checked in us often. If you read any of my recent reviews, you'll note whether or not the establishment charges for water. This one does not.
I hadn't been in a few years but it was still quite charming. The buffet could be better, such as lukewarm food, not enough meat in the tacos or tamales that had been under a heat lamp a little too long and no brisket in the brisket and veggies dish. Everything else was good and the service was awesome.
We visited here with friends, had a party of 10 including two children. The service was pretty good, the waiter was friendly and accommodating to our large party. We were seated fairly quickly as well even though it was rush time. The food was acceptable, nothing special. I had the chile relleno which was a bit bland. I felt the prices were too high for the quality of food. Our food was on the cool side which was disappointing.
Its pretty okay, nothing too special, but i definitely would want to go to chewys next door tho, no hate love the service 🙂↕️🙂↕️
4/14/22: Went again in hopes it was better. Nope, still too spicy. They use way too much chili powder in their enchilada sauce. I went to San Antonio, and the flavor was awesome and didn't burn your mouth. Casa Herrera owners need to learn something from SA. Edit 06/13/21: We went in several times over the last few weeks. I called to complain about their enchiladas sauce being a bit too spicy. Leaves a after taste of heat in your mouth and your stomach will be bothering you later. Too much chili powder or something else in it. My mom and brother came and it was too much for them too. I tried to talk to the manager that is usually the cashier and she was rude and wouldn’t listen. Saying we never had complaints on it before, and it’s me since they eat their food all the time. I’ve been going to them for years and they changed over the last year. They have other complaints it the reviews of similar problems. Guess they don’t read the reviews. We will be going elsewhere now as they don’t seem to care to fix it. Older review: Been coming here for years.. Love the texmex but lately their sauce on the enchiladas has gotten a bit too spicy with too much chili powder. They use to be awesome. Last at least 5 visits have not been so good and we stopped going as often now as my family cant handle spicy food.
Not great. Nothing really good. Its ok price
Went here while in town based on the reviews. Service was amazing, food…. Not so much.
Server 5 stars, food 3 stars, hostess 0 stars We came tonight at 5 and were told a 25-minute wait. I gave our name and said we would wait in the lobby where it was extremely hot even with two fans blowing (maybe they could invest in a window shade). We waited about 20 minutes, my husband went to check, and he was told they took our name off the list because I said we were going somewhere else. I did not tell them we were leaving. Instead of honoring our original place in line, the hostess said she would see what she could do and put our name on the bottom of the list. Then our guest went to check and they argued with her. We finally got seated about 5:45 after several people who came in after us got seated. This is poor customer service. The Herrera mom and dad would have been embarrassed by this. We were embarrassed how we were treated in front of an out-of-town guest after we had said this was a good place to go. The good news is that we had a wonderful server named Maria and she saved the evening. She was friendly and did her best to get us taken care of quickly. Our guest had an appointment to get to and the seating delay could have meant she would be late. Maria got our order, kept our glasses filled, and served our food in time for our guest to finish and get to her appointment on time. The ladies up front have not been friendly the last three times we have been there. It's a shame. We like to go to locally-owned places, but I'm sure it will be a long time before we go back here. If we get an apology, we will forward it to our guest.
We just walked in to hopefully get a table, but when they asked how many and were told 5, they told us to wait for the others to even be seated? I've never been told that before when eating here, but we won't be back because that's the stupidest thing I've heard. We've always been able to get seated and meet people there or wait for them.
My first experience ordering take out here. I called to place my order and the employee was friendly, quick and knowledgeable of the menu. I ordered the beef enchiladas and fajita chicken quesadillas. When I arrived to the restaurant it looked like an old two story office building. Walking inside it had some kind of musty smell, which wasn’t pleasant for a restaurant. I was acknowledge immediately by the host and she checked on my order. I received all the items I ordered with complimentary chips (freshly made) and salsa. The enchiladas were very bland in taste and the fajita chicken in the quesadilla was dry. I was disappointed in the food overall. The chips and salsa were the only thing I ate. It’s unfortunate the food was not good but I am giving this place 2 stars because of their staff and receiving my order in a timely manner. I probably will not be coming back again.
Went on closing time. I ordered a Manuel's plate. They could of told me to come in 10 minutes at least bcuz I ordered to go. I don't live close by . When I got home it was all cold. And the way it is on line says it comes with a chicken enchilada and beef enchilada and a taco with beans n rice, and it was 2 beef, but I didn't tell them since it was 2 minutes until closing when I ordered. I didn't like the cheese sauce over it. It was loaded with salt and no flavor. The price was 15.46 .It wasn't worth the money. 😞 They need to update their menu on line. Becuz those lower prices on line are not the real prices.
Overpiced. Didn't care for the food too much. Taco bell uses more chili powder than this place does. The carne guisada was a pink/salmon color and was not even brown or seasoned well. The chile rellenos were okay, but the skin wasn't well blistered and membrane was still chewy and very noticeable. The tortillas were store bought. The meat was tender and probably good for older folks who have food sensitivities. The best part about our whole visit was the waitress and the pitcher margaritas. That's about it.
Terrible experience. Host was incredibly rude. She didn't even acknowledge us the first five minutes we were there because she wad you busy playing on her phone. When she did look up from her phone, she quoted us 40 minutes wait. The place was empty. We waited. Finally got seated- and wish we would have iist left. Food was awful.
Not impressed with the food. Beans were burnt, nachos were 99% lettuce. Chips were good. Salsa was horrible WAY too much Cumin. Wouldn’t recommend if you are looking for Good Mexican food.
We waited 20 mins for a table. No big deal. We finally got a table and wait over 15 mins for the server. She pops her head in the room and said it will be a few minutes, she comes back in takes are drink order and food order to our table of 2 and another table of 2. Wait over 15 mins so we walked out. The owner or manger is up against wall standing there up front.. he does not help his servers…
Very upset, TIP was added to my bill. It was placed in the center of the receipt I guess so I wouldn't see it right away..It is one thing to suggest a tip price, but to tell or make people pay a certain price tip shouldn't happen!!. I WON'T be back til this policy is changed... I had already left tip on the table. Also note that some of the other reviews and photos appear to have been professionally done to improve their ratings.
Disgusting. They did take my meal off but wouldn’t take off my kid’s meals that they didn’t touch. $52 for the absolute most disgusting Mexican food I ever had. The fajita chicken is boiled. The kids burgers are dry and burnt. The beans are clumpy and nasty. The cheese dip is gross. Not the typical white queso. It’s yellow and disgusting, also wasn’t refunded for that mess! Neverrrrr again.
Food was awful.. I got the Manuel lunch plate.. rice was gray? Beans were flaky.. enchiladas watered down queso.. beef was weird tasting.. the salsa tasted like cumin.. overall the food was horrible.. I’m from Dallas area and was here for a job and I’d wait next time maybe go to Taco Bell.. only thing good was the waitress
“Today my husband & son We were out eating lunch today and greeted fast by the sweetest young lady talked had a great conversation with them told her she has the sweetest soul & she’s absolutely amazing. 2 mins later she comes to the table crying that she was told she needed to cash her tables out so she could leave and of course my husband asks do you mind telling me what happened are you ok , she goes to state what had happened the owner LIZ had snatched a bowl of salsa out her hand stating there was to much salsa and it got all her face & how she gets picked on about she needs to wear makeup , or she has to put water in her hair , or she needs to wear lip gloss . As they were leaving he heard the owner yelling at her and I just felt soo bad hearing that when they got home cause she’s seemed so sweet and does a really good job at what she does I was hoping to return to visit her for myself but she was fired . Me or my family will not be returning back
Had the Chile rellano. Completely flavorless, not crunchy, filled with a liquid that attempted to pass as cheese, chile con carne wasn't good. Guacamole was browning. Rice looked like overcooked instant rice
Sad to see the owner treat a young lady in the manner she did, constantly commenting on this beautiful woman’s appearances saying she needs more make up on,needs water in her hair… run your establishment how you wish but remember people are always watching this woman is a fantastic server and always presentable , it’s clear your picking comes from something more internal . Me and my family will not be supporting this business anymore. I hope the young woman finds an establishment that truly appreciates and values her .
Won’t be back ! Left and went to cilantros ….. wasn’t what we expected as far as the nacho’s
This was our first time here. First I just want to say our waitress was great she was the only good thing. The food was so bad I didn't even eat mine and neither did my in-laws. The queso taste like chicken and the fajitas were just as bad.
Visited with my family, and we were seated fairly quickly. The waitress ( I can not remember her name, but she had bright red eyeliner) was so sweet and attentive. She was constantly checking on us and was overall just very friendly. Despite the great service, the food was terrible. It came out in about 5 minutes after ordering... no joke. An immediate red flag for us was confirmed once we tasted our food. I got the beef fajitas, and you could tell just looking at it that it was old. My daughter got cheese enchiladas, and the cheese inside the tortilla was rubbery as if it had been microwaved. My husband basically said the same for his chile rellenos, the salsa was overpowered by cumin, and the chips, tortilla, and salsa are store bought. You can imagine our shock when we received the bill, and it was about $60 for two adults and one child. No alcoholic beverages or anything fancy like that. Safe to say that we will not be going back.
