Opinions de Cafe Hong Kong Albee Square
I recently discovered that this Chinese restaurant is offering a lunch special. We must maintain quality. Don't sacrifice the quality of our dishes for the sake of increasing traffic. Packed fried chicken I'll try the braised fish set meal next time. We hope to invent more cost-effective package options.
Love their choices in the lunch menu, especially the steam fish. They give you authentic Chinese food that is freshly cooked and order to serve. I ordered 2 lunches and brought the left over home. The price is great.
We had Christmas day dinner here. It was the only restaurant without a line out the door. We were glad we ended up here!! The food was amazing! Fresh, tasty and the portions were hefty! We had to share a table with a lovely family from Hong Kong and they raved about the food so it is very authentic. I highly recommend this hidden gem!
We came on a weeknight for dinner, and it was packed and very busy! The HK cuisine served here is one of the most authentic in the city and it's a great value with large entree sizes. 5/5 Sweet and Sour Fried Pork Chop -- the best in NYC imo! They really have such crisp pork slices in a sauce with the perfect sugar to vinegar ratio! This is a must order here! 4.5/5 Baked Tomato Pork Chop Fried Rice -- piping hot, fresh tasting tomato sauce, huge portion of fried rice and pork 4.5/5 Salt and Pepper Fried Squid -- solid dish, but a bit on the saltier side and could be fried crisper
First time dining here. Love the service and food came out fast. Had been buying take out and never disappointed, didn't wait for too long either when buying take out. Good food. Share the table if you come with a small party and get big table. Must try the steamed fish, fried rice and lobster (better without noodles underneath). Unfortunately, cash only.
My rating for this place is 4.5/5 since I found a few dishes were premade such as fish with tofu casserole (斑腩豆腐煲). The fish has too much flour and since fish was premade it lacks of the crispness. Other freshly made dishes have good wok heat (劐气)which is important in Cantonese food. I feel the Chinese water spinach with fermented bean curd needs a bit more fermented bean curd for its unique flavor though I enjoy the wok heat on this dish. Overall very solid Cantonese restaurant and I will be back.
Literally to die for when the food comes out hot. Pea sprouts are perfectly crisp, garlicky, and the hot oil makes it juicy. The fish is silky, the pork is crispy (some fatty parts), and the eggplant has a fermented fish crumble that is absolutely a welcome contrast to the savory eggplant. Set with hot tea, it was an entirely enjoyable and filling lunch!
Passed by many times! Met friends here for early lunch Saturday 3/18/23. They have been here before and recommended. The service was good and good was delicious. There was only one mistake. We ordered the steamed carp fish with a different sauce and received it the way it's normally prepared. The person who brought it to us said the chef must have made a mistake. He didn't go back to check and see if the one we ordered was still being prepared. About 10 minutes later someone else comes to our table with the correct dish and we said we already received because we were told that there was a mistake. It was fine since it was good that's why I am not taking away from the stars I gave. I would definitely recommend and go back.
This is by far the best value Chinese full-menu restaurant in New York Manhattan Chinatown. The majority of the dishes still have the pre-pandemic price. We tried 3 dishes this time. 1. Salt and pepper pork chop. Just look at the picture — good portion size. Tastes so good. 2. Salty fish with chicken and eggplant. This might be too exotic for non-Asians. I can eat a bowl of rice with just 3 spoons of this. But the salty fish part might be too strong for people who mainly eat burgers and pizza. 3. Curry beef. This is not recommended — too watery. And the beef is supposed to be the beef belly part, theirs was too lean. For curry beef, West New Malaysia (on the same street) is still the best by far. Total was $39 after tax. BTW, they accept cash only.
Café Hong Kong in Chinatown, Manhattan, delivers a solid Hong Kong-style dining experience with flavorful dishes, fast service, and a lively atmosphere. The menu is extensive—from classic BBQ meats to sizzling clay pots—and portions are generous for the price. It’s not fancy, but it’s authentic and dependable. Recommended.
If you’re looking for some no frills goodness, with affordable prices and very nice portions, come here!!. . Here is what we ordered: 1) Fried Pork Intestines - it was very fatty, might’ve been too much fat but I liked it. - comes with sweet sauce on the side 2) Fish Maw Soup - very plump fish made, make sure to add the red vinegar for extra flavor 3) 1/2 Crispy Garlic Chicken - this was ok, maybe a tad on the dry side 4) Lobster Yee Mein - barely saw/had any of the yee mein under all that lobster. The lobsters were very fatty, very meaty. We got it canto style, it came with some jalapeño, which had a kick to it 5) Lamb Casserole - this was very tasty. Not gamey and the fried tofu skin absorbed all that sauce, so tasty 6) Peking Porkchops- their porkchops are more on the thin side. And it’s flatten, at least most of the pieces. Not too many fatty pieces either. It was good 7) Beef Chow Fun - lacked a little wok hey here but they give you a lot of beef. Still good 8) Choy Sum with Preserved Meats - a simple dish, the preserved meats added a nice salty element. Parents thought the choy sum could’ve been cooked a bit longer. 9) Jelly Fish (not pictured) - this wasn’t bad, they give you a lot of the pickled carrots and radish (which is pretty good). . This was way too much food for 7 adults and 2 kids. All was $246 before tip, the most expensive dish was the lobster yee mein at $70, seafood is always pricy at restaurants. There was a lot leftover too.
Service was horrendous. The lady made us buy more plates to match the number of people there, even though we don't eat a lot. Restaurants near Cafe Hong Kong are also tastier. The sesame chicken was a little too sweet and the crispy tofu was not that good. Seriously, there are much better, much tastier restaurants in Chinatown.
Our second dinner in Big City was a major disappointment. Out of a party of six, only two people had anything positive to say about their meals - one ordered the lobster, the other the sweet and sour pork. The rest of the dishes were deeply underwhelming. The soup was bland, the tofu was even worse, and several of us genuinely could not identify what we were eating, either by taste or presentation. It was particularly frustrating to see other tables - mainly Asian diners - being served dishes that appeared far more appetizing, which made us wonder whether our experience might have been different had we been able to communicate more effectively. To compound matters, the bill felt like an insult added to injury, given the overall quality of the food and the experience.
