I've tried 9 (or so) of the tasty, delicious foods here, both sweet and savory, and they're all wonderful. The sweets are flavorful and not overpowering; the savory are well seasoned and robust. The teas that I have tried are also fantastic, and you can't go wrong with the coffee! It's an easy atmosphere to spend some time or bring your kids (there's a playroom, patio, and playground).
I am so grateful to Brentwood Social House for opening their doors to Measure as we celebrated the Austin Woman Magazine Covergirl reveal! The space was so beautiful and warm. The staff amazing. There is something very special and magical about the culture of that place. Go go go and find out for yourself! Oh… and they have this tea that was almond-y… yum! Thank you Suzanne Daniels 💕
My Bestie and I reserved an Afternoon Tea , and it was perfect! The tea sandwiches, scones with jam and butter, and desserts were all so delicious! And filling. We got to choose a pot of our favorite hibiscus tea. The tablecloth and settings and mismatched china were adorable! And the service was perfect. Would highly recommend. Can’t wait to do this again —maybe with my little girls in tow 💝
Great atmosphere with delicious food. The Cheese pasty was perfect. The staff is warm and genuine. The quality of the ingredients for both the coffee and baked goods is very apparent. Added bonus, the tables are a great size for laptops to get some work done while you enjoy your coffee.
Wow what is there not to love about this place!!! They have a wonderful play area, kids toys both things to ride on push, everything in between outside. not to mention the indoor play room that is loaded with a train table wooden blocks puzzles a play kitchen with lots of play food and just hours and hours of fun. They also have great food and pretty good coffee. Everyone there especially the owners are just precious and very very friendly. Absolutely adore this atmosphere and by far a nanny favorite
Great place to go with kids. They have a nice outdoor playground and a indoor place as well. They frequently have weekend events. Our favorite is the petting zoo but they have other family friendly events too, sometimes there is an additional fee. The food and coffee seem fresh. The staff is friendly but sometimes they seem a little too busy and could definitely use a few more people during busy times. This is an excellent place for the neighborhood and especially good for families with small children.
Coffee is very good, but the baked goods are simply the best. I appreciate the vegetarian options. Love both the lighting and the atmosphere. While it's usually busy, the place doesn't really echo, which I appreciate. The service is friendly. And they display a lovely selection of artwork. During busy times, the line will be long and they may run out of the pastry you want by the time you get to the register. There's very little parking, and I'm not sure where people park when their parking lot is full. Free wifi and a children's play area is also available outside.
Great medium roast coffee (no light roasts 👎🏼) and the pastries are delicious. The place is large like a three bedroom house. And they have a room dedicated to children so you can enjoy coffee while letting your kids play. The outdoor seating is huge and fenced in and also has a few toys for the kids.
If you're a parent of a child under the age of 6 or 7, and haven't been here, you're not doing coffee right. This place is freaking awesome. Good to great coffee. An entire play room indoors for kids (best for ages 0-5) makes for a great distraction for the kid while enjoying your drink. Similarly, there is a cool playground outside for kids. They have a kid-centric band called the Other Brothers that plays every first Saturday (maybe its Sunday idk look it up on their site), and they are super fun. Highly recommend for any parent to come here for a coffee and healthy distraction for the kids.
I told the cashier had and cheese croissant but I was brought up a chocolate croissant. Not a big deal since I love chocolate croissants anyway but I mentioned it to the person bringing it and said it's okay. I felt really bad because I should have checked before paying or at least on the receipt. They were so nice they brought me out a ham and cheese croissant anyway. What sweet people.
BSH has become my location of choice for al meetings. They bring quality food and drink, good, kind barristas, a good and diverse environment (outside, inside, quiet room, family room, etc.), and wrap it in neighborhood and community.
The pastries and food are great (the raspberry honey mustard that comes with the sandwiches is stupid good; inject it into my veins), the coffee is always good (lots of prompting questions to make sure you get exactly what you want!) and the staff is always friendly and the vibes are fantastic. Lots of rooms with different seating configurations (indoor and outdoor), natural lighting, and outlets. Lots of parking spots + street parking. A fantastic community resource stocked with a little free library + free community fridge. Committed to being a welcoming place for everyone.
This café is a delightful spot with a warm atmosphere and delicious coffee. Their pumpkin coffee is a standout, offering a perfect blend of flavors that I highly recommend. The service is quick, making it an excellent place to relax with friends or catch up on some work. Overall, it’s a charming place to unwind and enjoy a quality cup of coffee.
Great coffee and pastries. I particularly enjoy their ham and cheese croissants
Great food and a fun vibe. We went on a Saturday morning, and while busy, things were moving along and the staff was clearly in high gear to make sure everything was perfect. Great coffee and quiche. The shepherd's pie is fantastic, too. We'll be back.
I love Brentwood Social. I've had the pleasure of enjoying so many wonderful experiences here since 2016/17! I love the atmosphere and the food and the drinks. Start with a latte end with an iced tea. The staff is always so welcoming. I was reminiscing over the Mediterranean Tart they used to serve precovid. Man it was delicious! I keep hoping if I mention it enough they will bring it back.
Brentwood is a fabulous coffee shop and bakery providing the best quiche I’ve ever had (get the spinach and feta!) and delightful house-made chai with clove being the star of the drink. So delicious and satisfying! All the pastries are fantastic and the cosmic London fog is incredible as well. Great place to bring kids since there is an indoor playroom and an outdoor playground. Awesome place all around!
What a gem of a spot tucked away in the Allandale neighborhood! Clean and cozy tables in the rooms of a converted house that makes you feel like you want to sit down and stay awhile. I tried the seasonal Cherry Almond Iced Matcha, Bakewell tart, and Millionaire bar and they were absolutely delightful; one of the best matcha drinks I’ve actually ever had. A quintessential Austin business that stands for supporting local LGBTQ and community; I’ll cheers to that!
I wandered in here on Tuesday July 16 at sunset and I was in store for quite a treat. They were having a group meeting hosted by a wonderful lady named Fatima. She has a website named Love and Healing work. The group was discussing the practice of rest and everyone was sharing their thoughts, experiences, and concerns. Fatima was facilitating the group discussion and she had very helpful wisdom to share. The group was various ages and ethnicities but I felt we were all able to relate to one another. I was able to meet the owner Suzanne, who was very warm and welcoming. This was my first visit here but I’ll be back because the experience left me feeling worlds better than how I came. Thank you Fatima and Suzanne and you have gained a customer.
I just love this place! The different rooms, the back patio with the playscape - it makes it perfect for "working from the coffee shop" as well as business meetings, catching up with friends, or meeting a fellow Mom and letting the kids run around for a bit. The coffee is great and the food options a delicious! My favorites are the Fat Rascal Scone and the Bakewell Tart. They'll warm them up for you to get the fresh-baked feeling. Yum! Did I mention that I love this place? 😀
Few coffee shops actually deliver on being neighborhood cornerstones. Brentwood is so obviously frequented and loved by the community.
Just by default, the food is delicious and unique, and the coffee is excellent! I'm sitting here today writing my review after the power at my home went out due to winter icing. Brentwood Social House flung open their doors, let people come in to warm up and cheer up, and they're working so hard to make sure everyone is comfortable and getting something hot to drink. They're awesome, and kind, and generous. They deserve your business and lots of appreciation!
Great coffee, excellent pastries. The shop is a house that had been converted into a business, so there are lots of different rooms available. Great spot to meet with a group of friends to hang out. There is also a kid-friendly room with toys, great spot for parents. I also like that it's not too loud. I've been here several times and am always satisfied with my experience.
I am in love with this place!! Not only is it a great coffee shop, it is a great place grab a beer. It is very kid/family friendly, with its own kid play room! It also has a great outdoor area with toys, dogs are welcome too for all those parents of four legged babies. I also recommend this place as a private rental space. I had my baby shower here and they did a great job! The price is also very reasonable.
This place has a very cozy and comfy atmosphere, with a unique bakery smell that make you feel as if you were a child in your grandma's home. The coffee is good but what makes this a special place are their pastries. Tarts, quiches, muffins,...visually beautiful and appetizing, and with an amazing flavour. This is a high recommended experience. No doubts!
Such a cute coffee shop that has flavorful chai tea and London coffee and perfect pastries. Not pictured here: the lemon loaf (I scarfed it before I got a photo in), pain au chocolate and ham and cheese croissant. Ham and cheese croissant is super delicious as it’s not overly salty. The pain au chocolate is filled to the brim with chocolate which is SO wonderful for someone who eats a lot of them and never gets enough chocolate. The croissant themselves are light but flakey and not overly filling which is nice. Highly recommend if you’re looking for good distancing for meetings as well as a place that has plenty of parking! Will be back to try their afternoon tea service.
Cute coffee shop with delicious food. I got the quiche, while I sat in a chair reading. They also had a cute small kid room on the other side and a shaded playground in the back.
This is a neighborhood hang, with families of young children enjoying the playground in the cafe's back yard. The inside has a charming setting that is conducive to having coffee or tea with friends. The fat rascal scone with the forbidden currents is delightful. Food ranges from the vegan to the meat lover's dishes. All are tasty.
If you are the plug in the laptop, drink great coffee, eat hipster curry pasteries guy, this is your nirvana. They have an outdoor area and indoor seating with plug-ins. Decent wifi. Good sized parking lot but a lot of folks go here and linger. You can reserve a table but you don't have to usually. I'd do this place 10 times before I did Starbucks once. Like a bar for people who want coffee and coffeehouse food versus liquor and fried junk. Highly recommended for its genre. Never had a bad visit and the staff is super nice. The only recommendation I have for the place is, they are hurting for a counter seating area because it's mostly four-seater tables inside and they have a lot of single walk-ins and duos, so it can "fill up" quick with customers without filling up.
Cozy coffee shop with delicious food and coffee! I visited for the first time from out of town and the owner gave me a list of wonderful places to visit in Austin! Kind owner and friendly staff! 😊This is one of the best coffee shops that I've visited in Texas! I'll be back. Thank you!
Lovely little house converted into a coffee shop. Nice place place to chill with a good cup of coffee and delicious scone.
This place is very friendly with a fantastic food/drink collection. Both the playscape & the family room are great for kids. Being here makes me wish that we live in Austin so we can come visit more often.
Cute little bistro. Was excited to visit because of being woman owned and LGBTQ+. The coffee and pastries was delish. The batista not so friendly, and they were busy having a group social with themselves instead of being friendly with the customers.
I have to say, this place is truly amazing. One of the highlights is how family-friendly it is. Inside, there’s a cozy little area perfect for younger toddlers, complete with a play kitchen, toy tools, and a sweet selection of books. It’s such a thoughtful setup that keeps little ones engaged and happy. Love it. Outside, there's a great playground area in the shape of a ship, complete with two slides. It looks fantastic and adds to the charm, making it a wonderful spot for kids to run around and explore while parents relax nearby. While I didn’t try the coffee, the tea was excellent, very smooth, and flavorful. The food was also a standout. We came on a Sunday morning, and although it was bustling, the staff was clearly in sync and working hard to make sure everything ran smoothly. The curry pie was especially delicious, rich in flavor, and perfectly done. You can tell a lot of care goes into everything they serve. If we’re ever back in town, this will absolutely be a place we return to.
Got the chance to try the quiche. I wasn’t planning on eating anything with my coffee, but the quiche were out on the counter and so fragrant. I got the bacon one. The top has a great bacony flavor crust with a fluffy bacon, egg and cheese filling. It was a bit salty, but tbh, I like my food on the salty side. If I wasn’t trying to be mindful of my calorie intake, I’d have ordered several more. Coffee was fine, and I enjoyed the acoustic live music while I worked and had a meeting with a colleague. It was very comfortable, and I can’t wait to come back with fam.
Great food, variety of drinks and all delicious!! This is a REAL tea house, fashioned after English culture with pastries to boot. Incl vegetarian options. Try the Erva Yerba Mate. They had a Jazz Brunch with a band, Mystery Mustache. Great background music! Also a perfect place to take the little ones (inside room) and they're pet friendly (outside patio).
Smells welcoming when you walk in the door. I was greeted with cute pastries and chill & attentive service. I had rushed over to meet a friend and when I gathered the flow of the counter I was able to chill out immediately. Was nice to feel like you walked into your friend’s house. No fancy decor, looks are nothing to brag about inside BUT it that the most important thing when looking for a good place to meet a friend? BONUS: there is a small playground in the back where the kiddos can play and the decor out there is quite nice. I could see myself making this place part of my ritual if I had little ones and took a sacred moment to relax.
Brentwood Social House is a social quaint place mixed with working people, kids on the playground, and parents. They have a phenomenal selection of savory and sweet delicacies for kids and adults alike. I highly recommend a visit. If you have kids, go here after school. It seems to be made to please people of all ages.
I have lived in Brentwood for over 20 years. I want to thank and recognize the Brentwood social house both staff and owner, Suzanne for their contribution to our community. As Austin grows and becomes more economically difficult for seniors and lower income individuals,The Brentwood social house's community refrigerator has been a absolute lifesaver. The fresh, healthy food that they provide for our community helps so many that are experiencing economic hardships. With budget cuts, inflation and rent skyrocketing this resource has been invaluable. And it is through the kindness and empathy of the Brentwood community and the social house which work together that have kept many children seniors and anyone in need with sustenance, hope and the warm feeling that they are not alone in an ever-growing colder world. With great appreciation, gratitude The previously mention groups,Thank you, All of you that take time out of your busy day to think of someone else. It has not gone unnoticed by us nor the greater good. 🙏
Great this is a place with very good coffee, snacks and desserts, warm space, good service staff. I like the food station and the free stuff they created. Very meaningful. I am proud of this place. I will recommend this place to my family and friends. Thanks for serving my wife and me a wonderful cappuccino and great cake.
Went to Brentwood Social House for a friend’s birthday and tried their afternoon tea experience ($50 per person). We had a big group, and they did a great job accommodating us. The setup was super cute—pretty tea cups and pots that really added to the vibe. I had Earl Grey, which came with milk and honey or syrup options. The tea itself was simple but nice, and it just felt good to sip tea and hang out with friends. The real star was the snack tower. Each person got two pieces of cucumber sandwich, goat cheese with fig jam sandwich, and chicken salad sandwich—all super tasty and well-balanced. Then there was a second tier with marmalade brownies, tea cookies, and mini cupcakes, which were all sweet and delicious. The top tier had raisin biscuits with whipped butter and jam—classic and comforting.Honestly, it was way more food than we expected. Everyone ended up taking leftovers home in boxes. The whole experience felt fun, cozy, and a little fancy in a casual way. Definitely a unique and enjoyable way to celebrate something special with friends. Would totally recommend it if you're looking for something a bit different.
Charming neighborhood coffee house with an extensive menu of drinks and eats. It has several tables inside and out, along with a large play ground and little shop. There is a small free parking lot wrapped around the building. They host many events, so I'm looking forward to visiting again and trying more of their menu.
Great little coffee spot. We visited while visiting Austin, it was a walk away from the air-bnb we stayed in. Their Americano was spot on. They also have some delicious looking fresh baked goods that they put out in the morning until they run out out. We got a chocolate croissant and it was scrumptious. Recommend trying it if you’re in the area.
Very friendly and helpful staff. I had a great dirty chai tea while my wife had a cappuccino. Tasty. I saw quite a few of cool menu items you won't see at a typical coffe house...Shepherds Pie, Some huge cheese paninis, and all sorts of the normal pastry fare. Inside seating exists, though we sat out front, and my last trip here I sat out back. Kid friendly, nice atmosphere, fast service. Beats Starbucks and the wifi works well. 5 stars.
The coffee is good. The tea is excellent in taste and has the right amount of selection (not everything but with variety). But it is the pastries that make this place five stars. I've taken pictures of two tarts here. The almond tart had a jam at the bottom so you ate it as both a soft tart and as a hard bottom to break off. I loved that contrast. I loved that it was naturally sugary and thus not overpowering. The blueberry tart was the best form of a blueberry pastry I've had. It's small, soft, with the right amount of blueberries and a lower sweetness. That way I enjoy what I'm eating. The quiche I had a previous time was flavorful and filling. I liked that I could eat it slow and it retained heat. I also liked that the vegetables were larger pieces so you got contrast with each bite. I've also had the fat rascal scone which is very very good. I didn't take a picture because I enjoyed it too much. The coffee shop has a nice working atmosphere and a nice social atmosphere. I'd say on the weekends when I work I work inside but feel a little bad. Weekdays I don't as most people are working. Maybe I shouldn't work so much on the weekends ...
I made a small trek for this place! But what a super cute coffee and tea shop it was! I had a house made iced chai and a croissant. Both were fabulous. And when I say house made chai, I mean it. They brew together their own chai rather than just serving super sugary Oregon Chai or Big Train chai. And they use a local Austin chai tea distributor. All of the baristas and servers were super friendly! Lots of outdoor and indoor seating, which is perfect for the pandemic. There is even an awesome playground for kids and tables under shade coverings for their parents. This is an awesome hangout spot for all sorts of people! I had the best time sitting outside in the shade reading while enjoying my breakfast. Well worth the trek. Hope to come again soon!
The staff here are so friendly and genuinely welcoming. And the bakery items are delicious. Scones break apart easily, Bakewell tarts are moist, and Millionaire bars are a delicious treat with a lovely, thick layer of chocolate. And, I can't overlook their croissants: fresh, soft, and flaky. Other than pastries, I have to say that you must try their chicken salad: tender chicken, crunchy celery, and sweet red grapes. Perfect on a croissant. When it's not COVID time, you can have a tea party here. Enjoy tea sized sandwiches, pastries, jam, and a selection of tea. It's a wonderful time to sit in a comfortable and peaceful environment, with a lacy table cloth, enjoying personal tea pots and wonderful service. It's also a great excuse to pull out those party clothes you've been dying to wear--or, ladies, an excuse to buy a beautiful, multipurpose tea dress! They have excellent COVID precautions right now. You place your order online and call in to let them know you are there so they can start your order. When it is ready, they bring it out to a table outside their door and call your name. If there are others waiting, their lovely front yard allows adequate, personal spacing.
I really like this coffee house. Their espresso is fantastic and still crafty not processed. They have a great kids play area both inside and out. Please be respectful and pick up after your kids. They also have room rentals so if you need to make a room private that's available.
The whole line was nice and quick on getting the orders out. The two pics I posted are on their wall which I thought was really sweet. The Cons would be the restaurant was extremely small & people had a hard time getting through. Also, even though Covid is still spreading like wildfire...they weren't taking precautions to keep the store clean, line spread 6 ft, or making sure the patio wasn't crowded w/a whole bunch of people (including kids) on their playground outside. Parking was also a bit tight...but all in all it was cool. 😎
Recommended. My son really enjoys the pirate ship play structure with pole, slides, small climbing wall, etc. As well as the indoor family room with toy kitchen (& books). My mom appreciates that it's a short walk away in the neighborhood, especially with Thunderbird being gone. The multilingual clientele is fun to hear. Sometimes there are special events for artisan gifts. Their indoor & shaded outdoor seating options are handy. No complaints about the coffee drinks, either! The baked goods and drinks are a little pricey but it's understandable. Sometimes I get a vegan curry pie or a quiche to go (very yummy but I like to eat them with salsa!) &/or we grab another baked treat. They seem to have extended their weekend hours recently (noted in late Feb. '22). Cheers.
Cute little shop and friendly environment. We had the Mediterranean and grilled cheese sandwiches, the spinach feta quiche and chocolate croissant. Sandwiches were tasty, pastries were a bit dry. Would also like to see more vegetarian options on the savory menu. But overall nice little shop with a cool playground in the back for kiddos!
Coffee was good. They use greater goods coffee grounds. The lemon poppy seed bread was delicious and moist. The vibe is cool, its very lgbtqia+ and feminist focused. The barista was friendly and attentive. You can have a tarot card reading while you enjoy your coffee as well. Check them out!!
Edit: As the owners response states I do now see there was a phone call message that the food was boxed up. The call was screened as a spam call which is on me not the restaurant. The fact that a call was made and the food was boxed up changes my opinion. I am less upset knowing taking the food home was an option and that the cafe did what they could to ensure we got what we reserved. Original review:2/5 My rating is purely based on my scheduling experience with this establishment. I did mess up my dates and thought that the tea time I had paid for was on a Saturday not a Friday. I called to ask if there was a way to reschedule or ask for a gift voucher. There is not a way to talk to someone on the phone, it is all done via text. I was told no because the food is prepared ahead of time but they did say if I book in the future with someone they would give 50% off *one* of us. (Which I did turn down but I did not want to spend more money at this point). I think this experience could’ve been improved by having a text reminder/confirmation system (they do it over email which for me went to my junk box). I also don’t understand if the food had to be tossed or was it resold? Because I would’ve been happy to pick up the food in a to go box if that had been offered as an option which is was not. The tea bookings are 50$/person +tax/tip so it is a bit of a splurge to book and atleast being able to take the treats home to enjoy would have made it worth it. Going forward I would not recommend this establishment or attempt to reschedule based solely off my experience with the customer service. Sucks because it looks like a great place, hope others have a better experience than my friend and I did
I really like this place, but they have room for improvement. It’s got a wonderful little free library, a fun playground and an indoor play space for kids. There’s several rooms so you can find a quiet space if you need to concentrate. I do wish they had more food options. The playground is in dire need of maintenance - the gangplank onto the ship is extremely slippery, the mast has broken off leaving a jagged edge with caution tape wrapped around it, and the mulch is mostly dirt and ants at this point. Also there is a random deck out by the fence with more jagged holes in it - I saw a little girl get her foot stuck. In the heat of summer, it is very unpleasant and it would be nice to have the area more covered, maybe with a cooling system. There are also a LOT of flies. The coffee is ok, but my coffee snob friends do not prefer this place, so who knows. It is tolerable to drink and appears to be caffeinated. That said, my kid still likes to come here, so we do! He would give the place 5 stars for the millionaire bar and pirates booty.
I wasn’t prepared to like this as much as I did at start due to some hiccups, but the food was so good that the negatives were overcome. I walked in and a staff of four was in front but, as I looked for my party, not one greeting or welcome or acknowledgement in spite of me walking back and forth a few times. Should be step one in training. We were there for a reserved table so I went ahead and found a friend and then we got some help to find our table. We were served the tea party food but waited approximately 12 minutes with it in front of us for the tea to go with it. We finally gave up and began sipping water and eating. Horrible acoustics. Some old rugs on the floor would help muffle the sound so that patrons could talk without the whole room hearing. Perhaps some music and some hanging plants. The floor was self-done and rather than cutting any boards, they just left side gaps in between each board that dirt falls into. This would cover that but wood putty might work too. (Ruggable has washable rugs ) So as I said I was set on not likening it here. But then we are the food. Honestly the best scone I’d ever eaten. Perfectly buttery crispy on the outside and soft and cake-like on the inside with many flavors. Everything was scratchmade unlike most tea spots that mix in homemade with Sysco. A wonderful English vegetable tart that I could not stop eating. A delightful chocolate pastry. The cucumber and cream cheese finger sandwiches had fresh dill and lemon zest. The food was perfect. The tea was also excellent. So while I felt overheard and overlooked, initially, our table service became better and the food was fantastic. So, for that, I’d be back. But I do hope rugs and plants lessen the acoustics by then. No doubt all conversations are shared with all other diners.
The environment is great for families with kids, we had a great time playing on the playscape. Unfortunately the staff was rude to us in two separate interactions, and not thoughtful/accommodating of families which is odd since it's set up to be family friendly. We had coffee and croissants, the croissants were delicious and the coffee was just ok. Willing to give it another try and hope that staff can practice customer service skills.
The vegan croissant was delicious, and so was the matcha latte. I like that they offer day-old pastries at a discount, and they still taste great. The atmosphere is cute and casual. It's a good place for meetings, working alone, or enjoying coffee with family and friends. The service was fast and efficient.
UPDATE: I wanted to update here and make note that true to their word, Brentwood did reimburse me for the visit I initially wrote about. I was pleasantly surprised and felt like this spoke volumes. I went back today and had a lovely visit. Staff were courteous and helped me navigate foods that were allergy friendly for my littlest. I’ve updated my review according to my most recent visit and hope to see it continue as such! I have tried so so many times to love this place, but at this point I have to say something. For a small local cafe that really seems to be involved in the community, the vibes of the staff are just NOT it. Behind the register is a “pass it forward” bulletin but it seems that the staff can’t even be kind enough to their own costumers. The baked goods and shepherds pie are usually quite delicious, today the panini came out barely warm with hard cheese after waiting over 30 minutes. I don’t wish this business to fail, I sincerely hope they consider the environment they are curating and work to be more welcoming and friendly to all.
A few vegan food options are available and the coffee is pretty decent. It is a great place to get some work done. There is also an outdoor playground for young children to roam around. So, definitely family friendly. The parking lot gets filled pretty fast, especially during the weekend.
Cute space and idea (the repurposed house, a welcoming community hub) that could use more warmth, in every sense of the word. I did not feel welcome by staff. They weren't overtly rude, just very indifferent, kinda cold, and no one smiled or even readily acknowledged mine or other customers' presence when approached. The AC was on blast, and I know it's hot out, but it cold enough inside to be really unpleasant for me. Rooms could use a little warmth decor-wise, too. I liked my coffee beverage, the outdoor space, and the pastries looked beautiful, though I didn't eat one. Parking lot is a circus once it starts filling.
Iced latte and croissant were good but the staff seemed annoyed I was even ordering anything. And even more annoyed when I took 15 seconds to put my wallet back in my pocket. The playground was nothing special but my kids had fun at least. Probably won’t go back though because of the staff
The pie and coffee were good. But the space outside where the children’s playground is located seemed completely uncomfortable to me - uncomfortable tables and chairs, cleaning equipment in the most visible place and a huge number of flies that I had to constantly brush away completely ruined the impression :/ Perhaps mothers with children will feel comfortable here drink coffee while the kids run around in the fenced playground.
This coffee shop is legit a house that was turned into a cafe. Each room has its ambiance - whether you are here with friends, flying solo, or brought toddlers and kids with you. There is a room with toys and puzzles for toddlers (and its own tables for the adults) and a backyard with a playground. I'm not sure if they are pet friendly... but i don't see why not since they have a patio. I would have given them 4 stars if the house smelled cleaner. It has that musty smell mixed with coffee and food... it's interesting. Kudos on them serving wine and beer now, however! Pretty cool place, nonetheless. Super chill. The house is decorated with local artwork that's available for purchase.
My gal friends and I went here for afternoon tea. I was expecting a quiet place, but in each corner was a table for someone different...meaning there were college kids studying and dining, people reading books, playing on their laptops and then us having tea. We shouted over the noise to chat. Eventually It got super quiet when everyone left and tables kept looking over at us to quiet down because they were trying to study. It was weird. As for the food? Lemon cake was dense and super tart. The quiche tasted really eggy and I couldn't get past the after taste. Cucumber sandwiches was refreshing, but nothing to call home about. You only get one pot of tea. The scones are my favorite with jam and butter to spread. To each its own though. This place has a lot of wonderful reviews. Maybe the rest of their food and drinks are amazing, but their afternoon tea was not.
A Cute shop that didn’t show me good service. The atmosphere in the house is very Austin. Very eclectic with an interesting offering of foods and drinks. I was very curious about a curry pastry that I haven’t tried yet, but it looked divine. I went to Brentwood Social House for afternoon tea service that was borderline the worst service I have received at any restaurant. After getting our orders I never saw our waiter unless he was bringing us something ordered. Teas were never refilled and I had to get up and approach the front desk to get basic service. Our table was also not set and required me to once again seek out someone to get the normal fixings for tea and coffee. Outside of the bad service, the food was only “fine “. It tasted good enough, I wasn’t blown away, but I wasn’t turned off by the food I was eating. I would say of the food offerings the egg sandwich was the stand out for me. For the price, I expected better service and food that stood out more than being something to eat. The shop is cute but I feel zero desire to return.
Nice small playground for children, but otherwise a pretty disappointing place. Small cup of steamed milk was charged at $5, when the cortado of a similar volume is only $4.75. Literally cheaper when you add espresso. I also made the mistake of asking if they sold croissants (this being my first visit) and was really rudely and abruptly told "read what we have got" which was on a counter around the corner from the register where I was standing. I had not previously walked past this area, so would have had absolutely no way of knowing that it was there, plus it took longer for the woman to say this than to have said "yes" or "no"! The answer, which they did not give and I had to walk and read, was no. No croissants. Lovely outdoor area, but the experience inside was really unpleasant. Maybe it was a bad day to be here, but I wouldn't repeat the experience if the place was giving out free coffee.
I really want to love this place but it’s not quite there. I like their scone which pretty good. Egg bacon was so buttery. It’s just not that clean especially kid’s room which everyone has to clean after their kids but some toys are super and dusty. For the services, it’s depends tho. If you’re lucky, you’ll get friendly cashiers but not all the time.
I live close by and have been wanting to try this place for awhile. It was a terrible disappointment. I was intrigued ny the online menu, curbside pickup, and options offered. I ordered online when I arrived. I noticed several other people ordered before they came by to pick up, because they had a much shorter wait than I did. When I ordered I was told it would ne ready in about 10-15 minutes, but I waited more that 30 minutes, for a very mediocre cup of Americano. A woman came out and announced, you have to "check in" at your pick up time by phone call, I had tried to do that, and left a couple of voicemails, no answer. Then she said, Everyone must be calling at once? There were 3 people outside...? Will not be returning, not a good experience. Which is unfortunate because they have a really sweet outside seating area with picnic tables.
Michael Gailinas’s Open Mic at BSH: Weak conception; poor execution; off-putting, exclusionary, and unimaginative host. BSH is normally great. It’s the first place I played music in Austin, and I found it supportive. But yesterday was different. I went to the open mic with a friend who recently moved to the neighborhood, to meet my partner, who has always spoken highly of BSH. None of us will be coming back. The host, Michael, was condescending to both me and my friend; he was gatekeepy and threatening about how we could perform; and he personally insulted me while we were preparing to leave. I cherish the Austin open mic community. I’ve met many hosts. I even host my own. In over 6 years, I have yet to get such a hostile, sour, and unenthusiastic first impression from an open mic host. Mike was unprofessional, uninterested in others’ music, and completely humorless. The outcome of his attitude is evidenced by the fact that nobody else came for the mic, save a few “regulars” who were there before he was. Within this “safe space”, he made both me and my friend self-conscious, converting our excitement to meet new friends into fear of his judgment. He greeted us by shaming me for bringing a keyboard to his “acoustic sets only” open mic, a phrase which doesn’t usually exclude piano, and isn’t written on the flyer. He then insinuated we would act inappropriately, and without provocation he threatened to cut us off if we stepped out of line. While I was setting up, he criticized us for not arriving at the signup time, even though *nobody* had shown up at his signup time. He interrupted my song with an early clap. Nobody else in the room mistook the end of the first chorus for the end of the song. He was eager to get me off the stage. Everybody in the room was actively invested in the art–except for the host. It’s embarrassing. Most of the “open" mic time was for Michael’s music. I’m not convinced he’s interested in sharing the stage, in building community, or in encouraging expression. He claimed the stage is too small for a keyboard, while behind him rest FIVE of his own guitars. While we prepared to leave after one song each, Michael informed me that it was my fault that his “regulars” had left early. I had changed the vibe by bringing a keyboard. People only want to hear guitar. He spoke on behalf of people who were not in the room. They had left for their own reasons (after my song), but he used that to bully me. He didn’t bother to say anything about my actual music, nor my friend’s, because he hadn’t bothered to listen. Condescension, projection, and obvious insecurity. I’ll be fine to weather his rankness. But there are people in this city who need compassion to feel comfortable with sharing art, and BSH could have that. It’s been years since I've felt such hostile pressure getting onstage. A less confident musician might have lost the nerve to share at all for months. Michael should not have this responsibility. With total obliviousness, he will do lasting harm to someone who is desperate to be heard. His style of hosting is genuinely worse than setting up a microphone and leaving the room. He is failing this business and himself, making a mockery of the format, and squandering the potential of the space he holds. There are many mic hosts in Austin who state their rules clearly, who lead with enthusiasm and warmth, who listen to and support their performers, who are open-minded and creative, who don’t take more time than they give, who don’t shadowban pianos, who are not so inept as to intimidate and talk down to new arrivals on first contact, and who are not so tepid as to allow someone onto the stage while actively and openly resenting their instrument. Moreover, most of these hosts are also more talented, but as Michael said to me unprompted, “This has nothing to do with your talent. There are plenty of other spaces in Austin where you might fit in.” I hope that the house can find a better arrangement. There are a lot of musicians in that neighborhood, and a lot of empty chairs in front of that stage.
I usually give a place more than one shot before I write my not very good opinion but this time I’m disappointed again. I’m not a difficult or snobby person but when I go to a coffee shop with decent reviews I expect at least a decent service. Ordered a coffee and was asked if it’s for here or to go and I said “for here” assuming it means it will be served in a mug. (I don’t take my hot drink in a plastic cup). They gave me a buzzer and almost 30 minutes later I walk in to check if it’s ready but I did not see what I thought I ordered. I walked over the play room inside and decided to wait there and several minutes later I heard a very faint beeping and no buzz on my “buzzer”. There were only 2 of us in that room and there is no way I would have heard that faint beeping if the playroom was full of kids. Maybe was worth mentioning that the buzzer does not vibrate? I would have walked around with a toddler a backpack and a buzzer close to my ear to not miss it Idk. I walk over to the counter and found my order in a plastic cup already cold. It’s ridiculous for a cup of cappuccino to take this long, the place was not even that packed. I did not want to make a scene and did not complain but I visit very many coffee shops and my simple drink never takes this long to get ready despite the number of customers. Kids play room was a chaos and had pieces of trash left behind from customers before us I guess. I started picking up the trash so my child does not touch it. But my cold Cappuccino served in a to go cup paired with insanely slow service on both my visits and dirty toys are some of the reasons I won’t come back.
Came in today to grab a to go coffee and they told me my dog wasn’t allowed inside at all and I had to tie her up outside (on an extremely busy street). Absolutely ridiculous, she has been inside multiple times to place an order. Will not be returning.
I love this place, the food is great and the employees are very attentive and friendly. My only grievance is the use of AI art on the social media posts. It’s a shame that the business seems to want to put local artists in the spotlight while simultaneously stealing the good work done by digital artists to make AI art
We used to love this place, but over the past couple of years the quality of service deteriorated significantly. They refuse to pour hot drinks into mugs because they’re supposedly short-staffed. The kids room is uncomfortably hot, and they closed the only quiet, air conditioned room off from customers in order to charge you $25/hour. And even if it is not booked that day, they don’t let anyone use it. From an authentic Austin place that felt like a cozy family spot in turned into another money-grabbing enterprise. RESPONSE: thank you for providing context, however: 1 - the small room was not booked for that day, I checked. It was the middle of the day, not last 1-2 hours. All of the other rooms were full, and even then, we were impatiently asked to leave the room. 2 - I DID ask for my drink to come in a mug, not a to-go cup, and the person behind the counter agreed. However, when I got my order, it was in a to-go cup. I asked AGAIN if it could come in a mug, and I was told that they were short-staffed. It was a busy time, but there were 4 people behind the counter, I don’t even know if more people can work there. If you don’t serve drinks in mugs - just tell me right away, don’t promise and then refuse to deliver on your promise. 3 - I did not know that in order to be able to use the family room we would need to ask for someone to turn on the window unit. I believe it is up to the staff to ensure comfortable conditions for customers, we shouldn’t have to ask for it.
I had a very disappointing and uncomfortable experience at Brentwood Social. I came in with my service animal, who was clearly wearing his service vest, placed my order, and began looking for a place to sit. Out of nowhere, an employee approached me, questioning what kind of service animal he was and insisting that “he can’t be in here.” Not only was this invasive and unnecessary, but it is also discriminatory. Service animals are protected by law, and staff should be trained to recognize that. After I asked if she wanted to see his papers (which legally isn’t even required), she finally backed off, but by then, the damage was done. Coffee shops like this are supposed to be welcoming community spaces, not combative or uneducated about accessibility rights. The entire interaction left me feeling singled out and unwelcome. This business needs to do better in training their staff and creating an inclusive environment for all customers.
Very unwelcoming, pretentious, and rude staff, which is especially frustrating given that the coffee itself is pretty mid. There was also a gentleman sitting on the front picnic table in visible distress, with his drug paraphernalia scattered all over the table and ground. I'm not trying to judge or strip away anyone's dignity whatsoever, I have plenty of loved ones who have suffered from addiction. However, the staff were completely passive to this issue, which is concerning given that children consistently play outside here and the business presents itself as a "family friendly" establishment. Valuing performative tolerance over addressing real world child safety concerns is unacceptable. Will not be returning.
