Opinions de Josephine House Austin
The half chicken entree - crispy skin, lemon, spicy chickpeas, unctuous sauce… incredible! If you ever remove from menu I will form a one man protest. Love this spot.
Great food and mouth watering sauces. Extremely good service. I wish the chairs are more comfortable.
We took our son here to celebrate his birthday and really enjoyed our dining experience. We sat outside and the ambience was perfect. Our food was delicious with generous portions. We had the crab cake for a starter and it more crabmeat than filling. I really enjoyed the pork schnitzel. I could not finish it the portion was so large. Our son had the duck and my husband had the steak frites. It was a lovely dinner celebration.
Such a nice dining experience. Sat outside for lunch. There are multiple porch areas in a decent sized indoor area. I looked at the baked goods were just out there for everyone to see. The food was delicious. Not a good thing or a bad thing, but I was just surprised at how the portion size is buried quite a bit. Everything was great that we had and I also love that they had Jono Pandolfi tableware (my fave). My friend made the booking, but I assume you gotta make a reservation because it was pretty crowded. Would definitely go back and expect to the next time I’m in Austin.
Visiting Josephine House to start the new year has become a tradition of ours. Generally speaking, I like it. The staff are usually great and the space is nice. I think the portion sizes might be on the smaller side given the cost of each dish. Their bakery items are great but will run out. It’s a popular place but the location doesn’t support easy parking near by so plan to have a walk over to the restaurant.
Such a cute spot and I’m so glad I finally stopped in! Similar to a lot of the little bars and restaurants in Austin Jospehine House is quite literally in a little home with both indoor and outdoor seating. We went for breakfast and were so happy to see the fresh pastries available and the wide variety of options for mains. We ordered the almond brioche pastry and flourless chocolate cookie which were delicious. Both had a decedent rich flavor and the waitress heated them up with us and sent them over in a cute little basket. For mains we ordered the huevos rancheros and the avocado toast. The huevos was a little small portion size but for us it was perfect since we weren’t starving. The avocado toast was decent in size and had an egg on top to fill you up. They have a full service coffee bar with lattes or just drip coffee that was equally as good. If you’re looking for more of a boozy brunch they also had some nice bubbles and cocktails! Seating was a little cramped since the indoor space isn’t huge but we enjoyed the fact that it was more quaint. Want to come back and try lunch or dinner next. Staff were lovely, food was good, service was quick - and such a cute spot. Highly recommend!
I absolutely love Josephine house!! I go to their Monday night steak dinners. It’s a great deal and who doesn’t love a cozy wine Monday night?! The courses complemented each other very well. The salad was robust and filling. While the steak was cooked to perfection with some good ole fries. The desert was my favorite it reminded me of a Samoa Girl Scout cookie but fancy.
Great spot. We had lunch. Parking sucks. Get ready to walk. DO NOT PARK ACROSS THE STREET IN THE LOT. They will boot your car and make you pay $100 to get it off. Anyway…this spot is perfect for a casual lunch or work lunch. They have a decent wine selection, tasty stuff. The food was good too, HUGE portions. You could easily share a salad with two people. Sandwiches and burgers are very yummy. Fries are obviously incredible. I’d recommend a reservation. Lots of cute outdoor seating with little cozy spots for intimate conversations.
A long awaited birthday brunch at Josephine House! Beautiful weather for an outdoor table. Waitress was exceptional—great combination of ease, efficiency and quirky. The lox offering was exceptional. The touted lemon ricotta pancakes were good but not exceptional. Had other good menu options I’ll try next time. Great selection of brunchy drinks too.
I had the pleasure of dining at Josephine House in Austin with colleagues, and every dish was an absolute standout. We shared the panzanella, crudo, crab cakes, curry roasted octopus, and steak frites, and each one was both beautifully prepared and full of flavor. The panzanella was fresh and vibrant, the crudo delicate and balanced, and the crab cakes perfectly crisp with generous crab. The curry roasted octopus was a surprising highlight—tender, aromatic, and so well seasoned. And the steak frites? Classic, perfectly cooked, and incredibly satisfying. Beyond the food, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, making it the perfect spot for conversation and connection. Josephine House truly delivers on every level—an experience I would recommend to anyone visiting Austin.
My husband took me to Josephine House for a brunch date today, and what a special experience it was! We had a reservation and were seated indoors, where everything was set just right. I especially appreciated that the air conditioning was kept at a comfortable temperature, not freezing cold like so many places in Austin tend to be in the summer. The interior decor is charming and inviting, creating a lovely atmosphere for a meal. It can get a bit loud at times, with voices carrying through the narrow room, but it didn’t take away from our experience. The staff were all incredibly polite, attentive, and welcoming. Their kindness and professionalism stood out. Now for the food: we started with a flavorful scone infused with orange zest, anise, and black currants and it was absolutely delicious. Then came the sourdough avocado toast topped with a poached egg as well as shrimp, along with a side of creamy corn grits seasoned with fresh herbs. Every bite was full of flavor! I'm so glad we kicked off our weekend here. 🙌 I highly recommend it!
I was absolutely delighted with this place! The food was amazing—every dish was fresh, delicious, and beautifully presented. The atmosphere here is incredibly cozy. I will definitely come back again and highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates great cuisine and a warm ambiance!
I recently visited this restaurant for the first time, and it was an exceptional experience. From the moment we walked in, the service was top-notch—attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. We started with the octopus, which was perfectly cooked: tender, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The fish dish that followed was equally impressive—fresh, delicate, and expertly prepared. The overall ambiance was inviting, and the attention to detail in both the food and service really stood out. I’ll definitely be coming back! Highly recommend this spot for anyone looking for a fantastic dining experience.
I think I need to come back here at night. They have Bandol. That stuff is hard enough to get in Europe. It is a tiny little appellation controlé and I can never find it. But there it was on a work day when I went for steak and eggs (which was great) and couldn't have any of the lovely lovely rare wine.
Overall the place is ok. Food was good. Husband got steak and it was cooked perfectly. I had schnitzel and it was quite good. I ordered one cocktail and it was nice. Parking is horrible. My husband parked in an empty parking lot across the street (other restaurant nearby was closed) and got a $100 ticket. This restaurant has 3 parking spots which were full. So, you have to find street parking. My husband spoke to someone who lives in the neighborhood, and they stated the restaurant recently increased their capacity, but did nothing about parking. Seems the neighbors are not too happy about it. Service was ok. We felt we had to wait a bit long for our server a few times even though they didn't seem that busy.
Well, this place like so many others in Austin claims to be a fantastic quality and for the most part it is however the menu is not too original. If you have to serve brussels sprouts like every single other restaurant in town I’m sorry not to creative. My complaint is that the Hamachi Crudo, which at first sounds original because there was persimmon under the hamachi, however, the peel of the persimmon is not supposed to be there. I told the server and she never came back never offered to replace the dish. I asked her to tell the chef I have no clue if she did, but that’s not great service for an expensive restaurant. Love the lamb rat Ragu and glad that the portion was split because it would’ve been way too much for one person and towards the end of the delicious ricotta and fresh spice herbs and lamb bits in the fusilli. I believe it was. I almost choked on cartilage that shouldn’t be in there! So I spit that out too. The cheese plate was underwhelming and the pieces of cheese way too small. The bread though sourdough seeded was delicious.
Good food, well priced and what we tried was well balanced but they seated us in the patio’s “exile corner,” a boxed-in little nook that looks exactly like it sounds: wedged between a blank wall, a utility-style brick structure facing a whole lot of nothing. We actually had a reservation, and when we asked to move, we were told the nicer tables were “reserved”.....awkward, since those seats stayed empty our entire visit. The servers were lovely but couldn't make any recommendations, but the overall vibe had that quiet hint of “you’ll be fine out here,” which didn’t make us want to linger or sample more. We even thought about coming back with friends ...strength in numbers, right? ... but decided once was enough.
Austin is flooded with so many average brunch spots just like this: places that rely on quality ingredients to justify jacking up the prices all while serving these standard, generic, forgettable dishes that lack inspiration. It's culinary noise taking up space but not really elevating the food scene. For that same money, I'd rather support a spot that brings bold flavors, creativity, or maybe global influence to the table. At least give me something memorable. Places like this are a dime a dozen, but I guess if you just want "OK", it's an option. The Good: Service is excellent. Warm, attentive, and efficient. Also, the nugget ice here is a small but mighty win in the brutal Texas heat, especially if you're dining outside. The Meh: The food is HUHHHHHH. To be fair, it’s quality ingredients executed in a general well-prepared manner, but it's boring, safe, and…unimaginative. The best way to describe it. There's nothing culinary-forward or inspiring happening here. And for the price point of the dishes, the lack of creativity is hard to justify.
We invited some friends to Josephine House for lunch, and honestly, it was just okay. The lunch menu was very limited — we ordered the steaks and eggs, but they weren’t that great. The patio area was also quite uncomfortable for what they charge — the tables and chairs weren’t cozy at all, and there wasn’t enough shade or umbrellas to make it pleasant to sit outside. What really surprised me was the billing — they automatically added a 20% gratuity to the check, and then still asked for an additional tip at the end. I was shocked. I believe tipping should be a personal choice, especially when the service and overall experience were just average. In short, ordinary food, uncomfortable seating, and confusing tipping policy. Definitely expected more for the price.
Underwhelming experience even though we booked months in advance for a special occasion. Tiny, cramped dining areas inside and outside. They don’t have seating inside for more than 4 people. They seated 6 petite women at a patio table more suitable for 4 people. Way too hot to be sitting that close and waiting on slow service. $20 avocado toast was nothing to write home about- something I could have made at home.
