Opinions de Sushi Junai Omakase Austin
Our server, Calvert was exceptional. He was attentive without being intrusive, knowledgeable about the menu, and made sure everything was perfect from start to finish. Truly elevated our dining experience. Highly recommend!
Had one of their pasta dishes and the beef tartare with the best shoe string fries - soo good. Ofc we had to try something off the Negroni menu...mind blown. The Negroni Blanco and the mezcal Negroni were unexpected twists to the meal and I'd forego the wine every time for them. Great date spot before a show at The Paramount.
Very enjoyable overall experience. The food was great. Our favorites were the rabbit rillettes, con chiglie pasta, and braised lamb shank. The steak tartare and Gina’s Caesar were also good. The bone marrow in the bone marrow and sourdough dish was a slimy texture, which we weren’t a fan of, but that was a personal preference that I don’t think reflected the quality of the dish. The service was good. Our server and the staff were very attentive and kind. We’ve recommended the restaurant to friends and will be back.
Had a lovely lunch at Gina's. A cozy place for a delicious lunch. There wasn't a wait to get in and we didn't have a reservation. Waitress was great, great recommendations, offered us tap or sparkling water and kept us filled up. Started off with a the stake tartare and it was delicious. Once you mix in the little quail egg it gives it a delicious flavor that went perfectly with the crunchy waffle chips. The Mafaldine pasta is a must if you love mushrooms. It was a very heart dish full of flavor I will definitely be ordering that again. Ended with the sherbert that had hidden granola at the bottom. Great lunch overall.
Gina’s Hapy Hour Review: VQS 9 A romantic & chic French bistro serving modern French Cocktails and Bites. Value-9: All menu Cocktails and Snacks were half off which allowed us to try a variety of their offerings for half the price. Their Happy Hour also runs everyday unlike most other restaurants with similar offerings. Quality-9: Their food was so incredibly fresh and high quality. Everything including the chips and bread was house made from scratch. Everything seemed simple, yet incredibly on point. The best part about the salmon dip was the incredibly delicate house made chips it was served with. They were cut so thin to the point of looking translucent. The gougeres was our personal favorite and we both concluded we could eat it all day every day. The drinks on the other hand were a miss for us. 3 out of 10 cocktails were sparkling wine based and the rest were also on the dry side. They could have used some variation of mixed drinks with more creative mixers on the menu. I bit the bullet and ordered the ’It’s raining in my Champagne’ which was supposed to be mixed with Limonchello and Lemon and it seemed like I received a glass of straight champagne with a few drops of lemon in it. Quite painful to digest for anyone who isn't a hardcore Dry Champagne drinker. For someone with a stronger flavor palette these drinks would be a winner considering they are going for the French Champagne bar vibes ✨ Keeping the strong flavors aside, I’d still value their drinks at high quality due to their menu creativity. Service-9: Our server was absolutely amazing. She was friendly yet professional. She was so patient with me as I presented to her my picky taste in drinks while she explored the entire cocktail menu to see if she could find something that fit my choice. Most servers lose steam and leave it up to me to make a decision after pointing out the obvious answers. She was also very diligent about checking on us. The only reason I didn't give them a full 10 was because the hostess who checked us in could have been more polite. She looked visibly agitated due to a slight bit of confusion around whether we had a reservation or not. Still not rude in any way at all.
This restaurant reminds me of dining in Europe (which is always where I’d like to be dining) - cozy atmosphere, great food, and cocktails that are actually worth the price! I feel like this place has been flying a bit under the radar since it opened, so I hope more people check it out, but not TOO many more. 🤣 As everyone has probably mentioned, try the happy hour for half priced cocktails and snacks. Their cocktail list has a lot of classics with a twist to keep it fresh and interesting. My faves from the food menu: the crab croquettes, Texas redfish, mafaldine pasta, and the burger. 🍔
Nut allergy friendly: I only came for happy hour, but the servers seemed to be pretty aware of anything! Possibly one of the best weekend happy hours in downtown Austin! We stopped in with a group of 7 at 3:30PM and were seated with no wait. Drinks came out in about 10 minutes. They have their own twist on many classic cocktails. For example, the French Old Fashioned was much more fruity than a standard old fashioned. I didn't have any particular highlights, but the drinks were well crafted and very reasonably priced on happy hour. Paid via inKind with no issues.
We tried rabbit for the first time and it was paired so perfectly with crisps and jelly (I’m totally downplaying it, I forgot the names. it was good to our surprise ! The lamb was done very well and I loved the “grits” with it, so good. Bartender was charming and said he loves his job. It shows. :) He got us an extra jumbo shrimp to even up the number on the plate haha . Dessert I failed to take a photo of before we went for it . It was surprisingly filling and I don’t usually like chocolate mouse type desserts but this was good and had some whisky and oddly if you close your eyes you could say it maybe resembles a healthy, classy cookies and crème , it was interesting. Ambiance is really nice for quiet dinner with a friend , a date , or classy but relaxed little group outing. Food quality was very good. Not disappointed at all.
I love Gina's! The food was incredible, the drinks were out of this world, and the service was top notch. the location is extremely convenient and there's lots of easy parking nearby. Yummy, gorgeous, friendly, absolutely perfect.
We’ve been looking for a nice little French restaurant and this is it. It’s not the same as the beloved Chez Nous that closed during the pandemic but we are quite happy to have Gina’s. The decor and ambiance were great. The food was fantastic. We ordered the golden beet salad, mussels, cod, and rigatoni. All were superb. Only the cannoli for dessert was disappointing so we will skip dessert next time.
My 2 friends and I walked in on Saturday night and were seated promptly at the bar. I have to say, I’ve worked in restaurants/hospitality for 7 years, this was an ELITE dining experience. We went big and got a sushi boat because, why not, we’re on vacation! Our server Sonny helped us tailor everything with the Chef to upgrade our experience. He also selected a really great bottle of Sake that was perfectly in our price range. Everything was delicious but the wagyu and the uni were my favorite bites. Highly recommend going here :)
Been here a few times and each time gets better than the last. Most recently we did the omakase and it was an awesome experience. Chef Eddie was so friendly and engaged, and each plate that was served was fresh, thoughtful, and delicious. Would definitely recommend this experience, if you’re considering it!
We had an excellent experience at Sushi Junai! The food was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared, but what truly made the night stand out was our server, Sunny. Sunny did a phenomenal job. he was attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely welcoming without being overbearing. Everything was timed perfectly, recommendations were spot on, and the overall service elevated the entire experience. We’ll absolutely be back and will be asking for Sunny again. Highly recommend! 🍣✨
I cannot say enough great things about this neighborhood gem! Ever since we visited, I have been talking about this place nonstop and that is saying a lot, considering that Austin has no shortage of sushi restaurants. Sushi Junai Omakase is one of those places that you expect to pay a lot of money for the quality of fish, but surprisingly, the prices are very reasonable. I love asking for recommendations and we were all very happy and pleased that Sonny Thai was our waitress. She recommended some fabulous dishes: Kanpacchio, spicy garlic edamame, spicy tuna roll, hotate, sake toro, engawa, chu toro, kanpachi, seaweed salad, shrimp tempura, and the negi toro roll. Between 3 people, we all had either 2 glasses of wine each or Sapporo. Our entire bill before tip was $70pp! I just went to Uchi recently and 2 pieces of fish ran about $70! To say Sushi Junai Omakase is a dream is an understatement. The next time we come back, it will be to try the omakase menu.
Where do I start? Chef Eddie was remarkable! He asked us what we preferred, and if we had any types of fish we didn’t like. It was our 2-year wedding anniversary and he made it so memorable. Eddie incorporated educational materiel as part of the experience. Everything was exquisite. Can’t wait to visit again.
Visited Sushi Junai Omakase for lunch while I was in Austin and was so impressed. I’ll admit, I’m a bit of a sushi snob and this place absolutely delivered. The fish was incredibly fresh, flavorful, and prepared beautifully. You can really taste the quality. My waiter Sunny was amazing. Super attentive, friendly, and made great recommendations. Service makes such a difference and he really elevated the experience. I didn’t get the omakase this time, but now I have to come back for it. If the lunch was this delicious, I can only imagine how incredible the full omakase experience will be. Cannot wait to return. 🍣💛 Highly recommend!
From the moment we were seated, the atmosphere was engaging, largely thanks to the phenomenal service and the opportunity to watch the talented chefs at work. Our visit was immediately elevated by our outstanding waiter. He was attentive, highly knowledgeable and went above and beyond for us. While known for their wide variety, we focused on the cooked sushi, and the quality was top-tier. Every dish we tried was perfectly prepared and flavorful. The cooked rolls were not just an afterthought; they were skillfully balanced, warm, and utterly delicious. We never had raw sushi but our waiter let us try something off their secret menu, and when I tell you it was good. The real standout, however, was the "pretty cool experience" of sitting right in front and watching the cooks make the sushi in front of us. This live preparation added an exciting, personal touch that you simply don't get at most restaurants. 10/10 definitely recommend!
BF took me on a date here and we got 4 pieces each of salmon belly and fatty tuna nigiri as appetizers & the Salmonaholic and I Love Tuna specialty rolls. Quality of fish and freshness superior to lots of other local sushi joints. Salmon belly melts in your mouth! Staff was very attentive and friendly. We sat at the bar and watched the sushi chefs prepare all the orders which was a fun experience. Will be taking others here now that I know about this place! Highly recommended by me!
OMG, Sushi Junai Omakase was an absolute divine experience! From the very first bite, I was transported to sushi heaven. Every piece was crafted with such precision and care it felt like the chef was telling a story through the freshest fish, perfectly seasoned rice, and delicate garnishes. The omakase journey was an exquisite parade of flavors and textures each course more surprising and delightful than the last. The balance between the creamy, the umami-rich, the bright, and the subtly smoky was flawless. You could tell every ingredient was top-notch and handled with masterful technique. Beyond the food, the intimate setting and the chef’s friendly, passionate presentation made the experience feel personal and special. It wasn’t just a meal; it was a celebration of Japanese culinary artistry that left me completely speechless. 100/10
Went here for omakase with my wife for our combined birthday dinners. Loved every single bite Chef Eddie prepared. He knocked it out of the park. Don't sleep on the sea urchin option. It is unreal. I would definitely go back for a lighter meal as a less splurgy option. My only criticism was it was hard to hear the chef because the music was a little loud. I'm old though so factor that in.
Been here multiple times. The scallop and toro were some of my top favorites for sure but my absolute favorite was dessert. A friend showed me this place and I’ve been paying it forward by bring all of my friends here. Love everything about this place, such positive energy all around. 5 stars isn’t enough!!!
Came here to celebrate an anniversary. We had the 24 course omakase, every single dish we had was incredible! My favorite was the fatty tuna nigiri. Aside from the food, the service was excellent. They were kind enough to gift us an extra dish free of charge and also gave us a free dessert. Will definitely be coming again to enjoy their happy hour!
I took my boyfriend here for his birthday. The omakase here is so creative. It was so enjoyable and an adventure to go through. At the end you get to choose another piece of something you already had and we both got the A5. It’s crazy delicious and absolutely melts in your mouth. We also come for happy hour because it’s the best happy hour in town. Great price on Asahi and the sushi is still amazing quality even for HH. I think Sushi Junai is such a hidden gem. We’ll keep coming back!
Highly recommend this place. Came here for my wife’s birthday. So glad we did. We had the full Omakase experience with 15 dishes. Each dish just got better and better as we progressed. Sean was awesome and great at educating us on what we were eating and very knowledgeable about each dish. Great atmosphere. Beautiful cherry blossom trees inside with a large wrap around bar where you can watch the chefs as your meals are prepared. Will be back!
Daaaaamn Gina! Gina’s on Congress is a charming little spot in the heart of downtown, and it definitely delivers a solid dining experience. The French-inspired menu has some really tasty dishes, and everything we tried was well-prepared and flavorful. The drinks are where they really shine—creative, unique, and expertly made. The French Old Fashioned was absolutely amazing and easily one of the standout parts of the night. Service was friendly and attentive, and the overall atmosphere is cute and inviting. Good food, great drinks, and a nice vibe right on Congress.
I tried their Texas redfish and it was absolutely devine. Fish simply melts in your mouth. The buttery sauce was perfect and everything on the plate just balanced well together. Also tried their Tiramisu marquise which was also pretty good. Atmosphere was pretty loud and it was a bit weird having 2 waiters for the same table and one keeps asking the same question already answered by the other, but overall would absolutely recommend the place for delicious food, just get a table inside because the outside just smelt like weed (through no fault of the restaurant itself). Also noted that portions were more what I'm used to (in Australia) which would be too small for the average American standard, which was the only reason I ordered desert as well. Price guide (as of Oct 2025): Texas redfish $39 Marsanne wine $15 Tiramisu marquise $12 Tax $5.45
A great little bistro tucked away on Congress Ave near 3rd Street. It has a charming interior. The staff was all very friendly. The food was good. We had the bolognese and lamb shank, both were excellent. We finished with vanilla gelato. They have specials on different nights of the week. Tuesday is date night where you get 50% off bottles of sparkling wine. We took advantage of that and got a bottle of prosecco. The menu is limited but I understand it changes over time. Everything is made in house.
The food was good but not outstanding. The lamb falls off the bone so tender. The Gemmalini very bland had 2 shrimp so kind of expected more but beware it's under the past and tail is on so don't eat the tail! The Gelato with cookie was amazing! Our waters and my iced tea never got refilled I was hoping to get them filled but no one came back to see if we liked our foods or needed anything. Dessert was brought before plates were cleared which thought was strange. Restaurant wasnt full maybe 5 to 6 tables. Hostess was very kind and thoughtful she does a lot! Wish I could have found her for some more water or iced tea. We are big tippers so not sure why they kind of avoided our table. Just 3 women out exploring Austin having a dinner. We still tipped big although we aren't sure who our server was it seemed it changed when meal was brought to table then no one till we done and another person. We got so confused like did our server vanish? The Gelato with the pizzelle is really good! All their desserts looked really good hostess gave us a peep as she walked by.
Beef tartar was served with very thin wafers chips. It had a good flavor but the chips were too brittle to eat the tartar with (if that was the intention). Bone marrow was great, tons of marrow on the bones we got. It was served with buttery sourdough toast, and I think baguette would have been more on point for a French place. Lastly the moules frites, flavor was good but putting the ultra thin crispy fries on top of a saucy dishe is not great. We ended up with a bath of soggy potatoes.
Super cute bistro-ish wine bar with limited Italian menu. Brisket bolognese was very good as was the mushroom pasta. Burger was ok and the fries looked cool. Excellent drinks but took my cocktail before it was finished. Otherwise impeccable service. Chocolate cake dessert was not cake.
Drinks were good and half off during happy hour. I had The Diplomat which was a little on the sweet side and the Sharp Dressed Manhattan. Enjoyed the giardiniera but not a fan of the gougeres. I think if it was toasted before it was plated the flavors would have been brought out and the texture might have been better. I enjoyed the pasta and loved the caramelization and different textures of the mushrooms. The lamb shank fell of the bone was also paired well with the soft polenta and currant.
Food was solid but not amazing. I did doc the food due to the fact that the pasta I ordered had shrimp that seemed old. I ate two pieces then avoided them and just ate the pasta although the pasta also had the essence of the shrimp flavor as well. Staff was pleasant. 4 out of 5 because it wasn’t anything special just solid service. The establishment is very cute. No frills loved that it was a local place.
Pretty mid if I'm being honest. Really wanted to like this place, but the food just missed. I love steak tartare and this was one of the worst iterations I've had in Austin. Giving flimsy potato chips rather than bread or a cracker is a joke. I scooped my steak tartare onto the chip only to had it break and make a mess. Tried to enjoy the tartare on its own but it just didn't taste great. It was fine at best. I had the mussels and fries and while it looks cool it's pretty annoying to eat. My server had to explain to take the fries off onto another plate to get to the mussels, then go back to the fries. Another giant mess. Is upscale food supposed to be this messy? The mussels tasted pretty good, but there wasn't as many as I had hoped so I had to fill myself up with the fries, which were basically all breading and no actual potato they were so thin. Service was great from the bartender so props to her. But yeah, won't be returning.
Honestly, it is more of 2.75 stars but I will round up. A little on the side: it is ok, the alcohol taste was too strong Favorite godmother: it is good We also got dirty martini and old fashioned and they were better than the cocktails on the menu Gougeres: it is an attempt at popovers. They were fresh but needed more flavor or salt. Rabbit rillettes: not good at all. The pate wasn’t spreadable Steak tartare: very good, very flavorful Bone marrow: it was the meatiest bone marrow I ever had, but it could’ve used more flavor. Braised lamb shank: excellent!! It literally fall of the bone, you don’t need the knife Dark chocolate pot de creme: very rich but very good The price point isn’t worth the value. The old fashioned was $24. We had 3 items on HH and the bill was over $200 with tip, not worth it.
Yall👏👏👏 I wanted to so badly like this place!!! My boyfriend and I came to the omakase bar for our anniversary and were more than willing to spend $150 per person for this bar. I have no complaints about the service or the people but unfortunately the nigiri was not up to par. Initially I thought the food was fantastic until my stomach started to ache… A LOT. Let’s just say I had this food 30 minutes ago and came home to explode. Take this review with a grain of salt. When the kitchen gets busy the fish might not be of adequate sushi grade. Maybe avoid going on Friday nights when they’re the busiest to avoid this! Update: I had the worst food poisoning of my life!!! Don’t go here. B
