Basque done right! Bring an appetite and enjoy the flavors. Hits: basque sausage, pickled tounge, oxtail stew..

Great Staff! We were just past 2pm, closing time for lunch by the time we arrived, but, without hesitation they sat us we still felt welcome! Havent been to a Bakersfield Basque restaurant in YEARS and have been wanting to. So much food. Made a quick decision so we didn't hold up the kitchen. We both ordered the Thursday special, garlic chicken and had to take some to go. Can't wait to come back to try other menu items.

Great restaurant, went to celebrate a birthday party on 3/26. Wool Growers went above and beyond to making the birthday party a great dining experience. The food was amazing and the service was impeccable. My hats off to Wool Growers and staff for making this evening a notable experience. Highly recommend for those who have not had the pleasure of one of Bakersfield finest restaurants.

Tonight was my first time eating here. I must say that it was quite the pleasant dining experience! The moment you sit down the food starts coming. Soup, pasta, tongue, green beans, beans, salsa, fries, and then your main course! It was very busy in this restaurant but the wait staff was on top of it. Refills were anticipated and we were asked if we needed anything more often than expected. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants to experience an authentic basque feel. They feed you very well here.

Wool Growers is a unique experience and definitely worth a visit. It’s clearly an old Bakersfield institution and I’m so glad my partner took me there during my recent trip. I’ve never seen so much food and all of it was delicious, although, the pickled beef tongue took some getting used to, probably because of its texture. We ordered drinks and one entrée with “the set up“ between the two of us, and I was stuffed when we left. We had lamb chops, which I thought were delicious – a simple, classic preparation without a lot of extra seasoning. Service was brisk but friendly - I highly recommend giving it a try.

We've been coming here as a family for generations! The food is amazing every time, and the servers treat everyone like family. The neighborhood has gone downhill unfortunately, but they do have a parking lot attendant to watch the cars.

Everything we ate here last night was awesome! The "setup" is so good. The cabbage soup was so flavorful along with the fresh bread. It is one of my favorites. I also had the lemon butter halibut and my wife and the fried shrimp. The halibut was so tender and bursting with flavor. The shrimp were lightly battered and perfectly fried giving them great texture and tasting great as well. This is always a wonderful place to enjoy a family meal and family time. Don't miss an opportunity to come here.

My son and I had dinner. He ordered the scampi and I ordered the fried chicken with garlic and fried chicken with garlic was delicious when they served my son, the scampi, we both to our surprise could not believe the portion was not even worth the price they were little shrunken Scampi‘s about six of them and that was such a disappointment. I may add the salad has changed, and that was a disappointment as well. We couldn’t believe it and I was really surprised because I’ve gone there for many years and we’ve never had any complaints and they’ve always served nice portions, but this was a disappointment . And the prices are way off the charts and I miss having a pickle tongue included. Now you have to pay and it’s steep in price. I will consider going back, but it’ll probably be for a while.

Recommended by my father. We've been periodically eating at Bask restaurants when we drive through Bakersfield for decades. My dad said something about a local favorite to a local and was told the Wool Growers was the spot but you got to get there early because it was so popular. Well he was impressed so I had to try it. Fortunately, I was driving through right at opening time. Headed over after filling up at Costco. So much food; so good. Hard to stay awake driving on down the road. Can't wait to come by again.

This is a family favorite for many years. The food is very tasty. As with other Basque restaurants, everything other than the entree is served family- style. I had roast lamb, and it is just as great as always. I love their picked tongue as well as the other side dishes such as salad, soup with beans and salsa, and fries. It is highly recommended.

M
Matthew Kerley-Otten

Some really good food at a decent price. Very old place as well. Lots of families grew up going here every week. Get the soup, salad and bread before your main course and you won't be let down. Really tasty stuff. I had the lamb drip sandwich and while it wasn't bad I have to say that it was a little lacking in flavor. Then again I really like my food with lots and lots of flavor so maybe that dish isn't for me. Either way, it was a good price.

I've been going to this restaurant for about 20 years. I celebrated my grandparent's birthdays, my parent's anniversaries...good times. I recently came back and the food is as good as I remembered. I love the Shirley Temple and the wine. Their vegetable soup, beans, fries, fried chicken with garlic, bread, spaghetti, tomatoes, corn and shrimp are absolutely delicious. It's pricey, but you get a lot of food in the set up. You do however, have to make a reservation for a table.

The set-up alone gives you a LOT of food. The menu doesn't change and the prices for the entrees seem reasonable. The reduced price for kids under 10 seems like a bargain. Overall, it's a good value for what you get. Be sure to go in loose-fitting clothes, you will be eating a lot when you are there!

I had one of those life-changing moments while I visited here!!! The food is incredible, and the staff treat you like family. Even if it’s your first time. Wow, just wow. I was so very impressed by the food, service and family feel of this location. I ordered the fillet mignon with garlic and it was perfection and a generous cut. I really enjoyed all the sides that just kept coming. I was passing through and stopped on a recommendation but I will make a trip to come here next time.

I've been going to Wool Growers since the 70s-80s. The food has always been excellent and the service top notch. If you're looking for marble floors and crystal chandeliers you're not going to find it. But, the food and service makes up for the "Glam".

Must eat here! My favorite Basque restaurant in town. One of the only places that knows how to cook a proper rare filet mignon! In fact this is where I have my birthday meal! And the bread, and the cabbage soup. Oh man. It's like love in the shape of food.

This place is amazing. Lots of really excellent food, not very expensive. Great service A friend said if I was ever in Bakersfield I should check it out, and he was totally right. I had the roast lamb, a friend had the oxtail stew, but honestly just the included sides makes for a great meal. Definitely take the pickled tongue extra! Will definitely plan to go again if I'm in town.

Excellent 5 course meal at a very affordable price! This was a great first French Basque experience for me! It was great for our celebration and I highly recommend this place. The prices were so inexpensive, like $30 for 5 courses. In San Francisco I could easily imagine the same thing going for $150. Great place!

Woolgrowers has been a staple in Bakersfield for over 60+ years, been coming here since I was a kid. Come hungry because they serve a lot of food. The food is outstanding. We came in for dinner, a party of three. I had the filet steak, cooked perfectly, it was very good. Others had the fried chicken and pork chops-two chops, they loved it. Many side dishes come with your meal, soup, beans, salsa, salad, green beans, French bread, marinated tomatoes, French fries and spaghetti .

This was our first experience with Basque food, and we found the food, service, and hospitality wonderful. The staff members were friendly and patient. We each ordered an entree with the full setup, which was way too much food, and was all enjoyable. We had a lamb shank special and the oxtail, and were just about full before the entrees arrived, so we took home enough leftovers for two more meals. Highly recommended.

This was my first time dining here, but I can confidently say it won't be my last! This restaurant is literally a hidden gem. The moment I tried the food, it was a genuine teleportation back to my grandma's house. It truly doesn't taste like typical restaurant food—it feels like HOME😍😋. If you're looking for authentic, comforting, and soul-satisfying dishes, look no further. Highly recommended!

Service was spot on and the employees were very polite and helpful. It was my first time eating Basque food, and with a little guidance, it was a wonderful experience. The soup, beans, salsa, salad, Filet of Sole, fries, spaghetti, carrots, and bread were all awesome. They just KEPT bringing food. Alot of new and exciting flavors, very savory. 10/10 reccomend, can’t go wrong here. This local business deserves your money.

A Truly Unforgettable Experience Having traveled from coast to coast over the past 30 years, we have had the pleasure of visiting countless establishments—but none have left an impression quite like Wool Growers. From the moment we stepped through the door, the warmth and kindness of the staff made us feel like part of the family. We always seek out family-owned businesses during our travels, and this gem stood out in our search. We are so grateful we found it. The food was exceptional—flavorful, authentic, and clearly prepared with great care. The portion sizes could not fit on the table. Just as impressive was the impeccable service. Every staff member was attentive, friendly, and genuinely welcoming. We had the honor of meeting the owner and learning about the family’s rich heritage, which added a meaningful personal touch to our visit. It’s rare to encounter such heartfelt hospitality, and we truly cannot express how thankful we are for the experience. In three decades of travel, we have never encountered hospitality of this caliber. This establishment is a shining example of what makes family-owned businesses so special.

We order ox tails and lamb chops per recommendation of the restaurant for traditional basque food. They are so good. Ox tail is so tender and tasty. It matches the rice well. The lamb chop is also good but volume is smaller and the French fries is so so. We add soup and salad. It is totally worth it. The price is not cheap but with the quality and quantity it is justified. No wonder it has so many good reviews.

My wife and I had lunch at Woolgrowers. I had lunch and dinner there about five years ago on a business trip. We were seated quickly, and our waitress showed us the menu, and offered recommendations. We had the Thursday special - garlic fried chicken with carrots. We really enjoyed the family style soup, salad and bread. The food arrived in a reasonable amount of time, well seasoned and tasting great. I think Woolgrowers is the best Basque restaurant I have ever tried. Besides the high quality of food taste, the photos and decor is very pleasant and enjoyable.

I love the whole set up the food there was excellent. I was disappointed however when they forgot a plate in my party and when it finally arrived the lamb was under cooked. They offered not to charge for the plate which was really nice if them but then over cooked it when it was returned. At least they tried, which says a lot for them. Over all it was a good experience will definitely go there again. I highly recommend the oxtail stew.

The soup soo good. Our waitress got our bills mixed up. We all ended up paying for something someone else ordered. We ordered the pork chops and usually they're Thick and juicy these were full of a lot of fat and were Very thin. We all had to order Refills on tea and water. My brother and sister-in-law ordered the roasted lamb and it wasn't completely cooked. Some of the changes that they've made in the menu are good others are not.

Super interesting place. All about history here. Staff is super friendly and you definitely step back in time when you enter the doors. It is a super shady part of town but there's security in the parking lot so you'll be safe. The food idea is awesome where the sides are always shared around the table. The food itself is your typical American diner style, nothing fancy, but definitely homey. Worth a visit.

Now that Noriega's has closed its doors and moved to the History Museum, I find myself at Wool Growers for my Basque fix. My husband is half French Basque (If you know, you know) so we always look forward to a good meal whenever we get to Bakersfield. Wool Growers never disappoints. The selection, quality and quantity of the food meet or exceed our expectations with each visit. I do wish that they didn't charge extra for tongue, but it is worth adding to the bill to enjoy it. As with all BFL Basque restaurants, the wine is mandatory but not stellar. The ambiance was folksy, old school and visited by locals. It can be a rough neighborhood but there is a guarded parking lot adjacent to the building. My Picone Punch was the only disappointment of the meal, it seemed a little weaker than what Noriega's poured back in the day.

C
Candace Shellnutt

The bread and soup are the main reasons I go. It's so good. Really amazing crusty delicious bread slices and real butter pats The rest is not bad, it's just not my cup of tea. It's like being in a school cafeteria. We went for a company meeting and the long tables were ideal for that.

W
Walter Holt

The food was great. I lived in Spain so I'm familiar with Basque restaurants. The bartender is a Spaniard, good dude! Maybe an update to the decor? It's like the difference between Northern and Southern Spain with American West thrown in? We'll be back. Tasty!

C
Craig Hayward, Ph.D.

Fun experience of Basque cuisine. The soup and salad and fries are part of the standard "set up" and are delicious. I was less crazy about the pickled beef tongue and green beans. The beans were mushy and flavorless as if from a can. But there was plenty of other deliciousness to go around. Along with the set up, you can pick a meat. I got the roasted lamb. The brown mushroom sauce was very good; the lamb itself was okay though not remarkable. Big serving but with lots of tendons and inedible stuff to work around. Come hungry as this is a big and varied experience to eat your way through. Great service in a family style restaurant that it's clearly a local favorite.

Apparently Basque food is a thing here in Bakersfield. When I arrived at Wool Growers at 6pm on a Saturday right when they were opening, the parking lot was already full and the restaurant was completely packed. Luckily, someone was a no show for their reservation, and I got in. On the table when you sit down is bread and butter. Before you even order, the vegetable soup, salsa, and baked beans come to the table. I didn't know you were supposed to mix the beans and the salsa into the soup, and I was just eating them separately when I asked the waitress what the salsa was for and she told me. Next out is the salad, the tomatoes, and the pickled beef tongue. I liked their tangy vinegar and oil dressing. The pickling wasn't as pickled as I was worried about, and I thought the soft texture of the meat was great. Finally, out comes the spaghetti with meat sauce, french fries, the steamed vegetables, as well as your main courses if you order any. If you don't get a main course, it's $15. I also got the fried chicken for $4 more at $19 total, since it seems like such a good value, but just the basics is plenty of food already. I also tried the lamb chops at $28, and I asked for them medium rare, and they were wonderfully tender. Overall, I don't know if the food reminds me of anything I ate when I visited Basque country in Spain. Other than the beef tongue course, it all tastes very much like unpretentious regular American food. Nonetheless, the whole place is a real scene and I had a good time.

I have never had Basque food and wasn’t disappointed. Got the setup and added pickled tongue and entree of roast lamb. A bit pricey for one person, but after seeing how much good I got, I can see why. I couldn’t eat it all as a solo diner. Clean, quaint restaurant with fast and friendly service. Since I have never had or heard of basque, I can’t say authentic, but it was good food. Pickled tongue was different (it’s an acquired taste), but I ate it all. Salsa was on point and roast lamb was good.

The restaurant is located among warehouses. Driving through the neighborhood, we were a little uneasy. We were able to find a spot at the adjacent lot. Definitely the restaurant is located in an interesting neighborhood. We stopped in around 12:39 on a Saturday. The parking lot was full. Walked in from the banquet room side door. The room was full of people. Service was prompt and friendly. Drinks, bread, and salad were brought out quickly. Food was hugh portion. The salad and pickled tomatoes were delicious with its dressing. The sandwiches had a lot of meat. Our favorite was the oxtail stew. The oxtail was so tender that meat came right off the bone. Didn’t give a five star because we were expecting a basque cheesecake but it was a cheesecake that one can buy from a supermarket.

Service was great. Food/Portions were great for the price. Ambiance was good, cozy. Tried cow tongue for first time (second course with salad) and it was as pretty good- if I could imagine how cow tongue should taste. Cool little casual hole-in-wall, should definitely try it.

It wasn't bad. Not a lot of diversity if you know what I mean. Older crowd. I think it's a nice place for older people to go but I've only been there once. I also didn't feel like the prices were clear.

They removed the tongue and increased the price. Now they removed the Spaghetti and increased the price. I use to order some blue cheese and make a sandwich with the tongue. Now that costs $20 extra, on top of the huge price increases. The food is still good but costs 3 times as much for the same thing.

First time going and was excited cause my friends talked about how great it was. Our waitress was very good and attentive. The atmosphere was charming but the sandwich I ordered (beef dip) was disappointing. I took one bite and that was it. 😵My friends enjoyed their sandwiches but it could be that I am not a roast beef sandwich person. I was thinking it was gonna be a shredded beef sandwich. I did enjoy the soup and french bread!😃

We went to this restaurant because of recommendation from locals and also we want to try the Basque cuisine. You wouldn't thought it's a restaurant when you pass by that area because it looks like a warehouse and the sign looks old and faded. The parking is full when we arrived but there's an extra parking lot at the back. The interior looks casual. With regards to food, they'll serve you first with complimentary sides and the food are in large portions. I ordered the oxtail stew (good for 2-3pax) and my husband ordered the roast beef which he doesn't like much. The oxtail is very tender and it's good. We have leftovers, so we took it home. We spent a total of $50+ just for the two of us and I would say its kinda expensive.

This place seems OK to me. A lot of people like it because it is family style and you can try a variety of options. The quality of the food does need improvement. The noodles in the spaghetti taste really cheap. The green beans look like they came out of the can. For the price, the quality should be higher.

I heard about this place through many old timers. Since I was in Barkersfield I had to check it out. Plenty of parking and this place fills up fast. We were one of the first through the door. People who came after us had a 1 hour wait. They had no problem in waiting. Wool Growers is all about the lamb. In not a big fan of lamb but I sampled some of my friends and it melted in my mouth. I had the fried chicken which was delicious. The meal starts off with many side dishes served family style. You get soup, salad, bread, beans and salsa. I was full before our main course came with with the side dishes they served us. After our meal we decided to go exploring and look at all the historic pictures. They also have a huge banquet room in the back which was full for bigger parties. The place is historic and very clean. The staff made the experience worth it. The have no problem explaining any of the dishes and making you feel right at home.

I hadn't been there in several years. I was surprised how high the set-up is now. They almost force you into at least one of the lesser expensive entrees. As always, the food was good but it also seemed that they were quick to move you from one course to the next to get you out the door faster. I was looking forward to another bowl of soup but looked around & it had already been taken away--with the beans & the salsa--on a Monday!

I hadn't eaten here in years, and was excited to go. The setup was amazing. All the items that come along with it were so yummy. The main courses were disappointing. My sister ordered the pork chops. They had very little flavor and were really dry. I had the fried chicken, and it was mediocre at best. The only good entree was the steak my niece had. The waitress dropped off the food and we never saw her again. We had to ask several times for our check. We were never asked how our food was at all... until we left and were paying our bill. My sister told the hostess the pork chops were bad. She barely said "sorry", and mentioned she would tell the cooks. How was that helpful? Next time we want Basque food, we'll be going elsewhere.

All the food is bland and inoffensive. If you are a picky eater you would like it here. The old decor, quality of food, sad workers remind me of the Taft College cafeteria, surprisingly. Extremely pricey for the size & amount of food given. I ordered the patty melt. The meat was extremely dry and tasteless. The 'fries' were mushy & tasted off. Decor is dated, probably all original. Bench seats are flat and wobble. The dinnerware and cutlery all look original as well with lots of scuffs & cracks in the porcelain. The dining room is too loud making it difficult to hear the waiter. Hostess & waiter stations are visibly cluttered and disorganized. The waiters themselves are so disinterested in serving you. None of them are mean, but you can tell they just want their shift to be over.

It is good food, but I think it is more a must for the experience. Basque restaurant is really unique to the region. And overall, the food is good. It is a lot of food though.

My wife has been eating basque food since she was a little girl growing up in Bakersfield. Until last night I had never been. It did not live up to the hype. I ordered tritip for my main which was awesome but everything else was blah! The waiter could not be bothered to keep our water pitcher filled. We asked for more but all he did was remove one of the pitchers. Never brought it back. Then came the soup. Blah. Then the beans, ok! Bread followed which was ok. How do you screw up bread? The salad, just leaf with a vinaigrette sauce. Then came the plate of cut carrots. For real? Last but not least….a plate of French fries. Then the bill. Not really worth what we got in my opinion but it made my wife happy. Needless to say, I’d experienced basque and I won’t be back. Much more food at the local steak house.

Basque style restaurant. Quite the history. Get there hungry as the portions are quite large. I had the ox tail. Very tender. Mom had the filet of sole. Said it was good. Soup was very tasty. There were a side of beans and hot sauce as condiment for the soup. My aunt had the fried chicken. They complained the fries was not crispy. Was on the soggy side. Must experience at least once. Meat lover a must. Not much for the vegetarian.

I was excited to go to a Basque restaurant - so chose this based on reviews. Not sure how it merits this high a rating? No complaints about the service, they were very busy and my waitress was very nice and attentive. I had the Oxtail Stew -because where else am I going to get that? I didn't care for it at all - perhaps that's just my taste - but it had a fair amount of bones and mystery fatty/inedible elements. The rest of the meal - a MASSIVE amount of food was from great to really poor. Pickled tongue - never had that before - wouldn't have considered it - was delicious. Bread, soup and salad - good. Then there were the things that seemed like they came right off the grocery store shelf - canned corn, spaghetti like Chef Boyardee - I'm not really sure why they even serve those things except to increase the volume of food. And fries? Why? 2 stars because overall the meal was poor and the good service didn't make up for that. Doubt I'll ever go back, not even for the pickled tongue.

Went for dinner with elderly parents. Set up was mediocre, no pickled tongue which I don't care for but for what is charged, should be served. The bread was clearly not a loaf but a medley from past loaves reconstituted from other baskets/tables and far from fresh or acceptable. The spaghetti was the usual soggy and bland. Pickled veggies not fresh, with only tomatoes and onions. Entrees were not great. The filets, if I had to guess, didn't even see a sprinkle of salt, pepper, garlic or anything else. The waitress made it seem as though it was putting her out to ask for simple items. Very unfriendly and unwelcoming. Over all it would appear that as little effort and interest as possible goes into running the place or serving quality basque food. Sad to say it's lost something, possibly many things. We will definitely be exploring other local places for our basque food in the future. Benji's, Chalet, etc. Missing Maitia's.

We found the food similar to the quality of a home town buffet, very American. The ambiance is lacking- we were put in a large banquet type room with lots of noise. Our meals cost from $32 to $42 each. On the positive side, the servers were great, very attentive and friendly!!

I usually don’t write reviews unless a place is either amazing or truly awful. Unfortunately, this one falls into the second category. Honestly, it’s one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had. My wife and I were driving from LA back to San Francisco and wanted a nice sit-down meal, so my wife found this place on Yelp. Big mistake. The food was very poorly cooked and way too salty. They taste just like buffet food, low quality food. The only thing that was remotely okay was the soup. Service didn’t help either. The waitress didn’t even check if we were done and just took the soup away. Then we waited almost an hour for our entrée, which ended up tasting just as bad. We paid about $80 including a 15% tip (I was polite enough to even pay for the rude and terrible service), and honestly, we would’ve been much happier grabbing fast food off the highway.

The atmosphere, novelty, customer service and air conditioning were outstanding. The food was awful. It’s criminal that they charge $30 for their scampi. The food tasted and looked like it was canned or frozen. And the food seem to get cold really fast. Wish I could give a better review but I just can’t. Greatly disappointed.

Update: 11/10/23 After 20+ years I'm sad to say the service and quality has depreciated. The food is nowhere as good as it was prior to the pandemic. The staff is no longer familiar and the service has declined. I try occasionally in hopes it will return to its formal glory. Also the decor and remodel makes the restaurant look cheap. Went to dinner for my birthday they went from a 5 star to a 1 star real quick and its sad. Prices went sky rocket and you get less and have to pay more for what you originally would. They said its because the price of meat went up and they had to cut corners. Then why do I get charged more and get less. 100 for 2 people has never happened in my life there. And they don't tell you till after you order and ask if you want to pay more.

This was my first and last visit at Woolgrowers. First of all, we waited over fifteen minutes to be seated because the lady who appeared to possibly be a manager was preparing tickets for tables as it was after 7pm and they close at 8pm. However, tables were available and she could’ve seated us and finished preparing tickets later since there wasn’t any customers waiting at the counter. Secondly, the hostess was very dry, unprofessional, and rude. We had to catch other workers walking by to refill our bowls because they were taking them off our table quickly and not returning them with refills. Thirdly, when asked for more bread, which was stale and hard a hostess came to our table with a basket and dumped two pieces of bread that looked as if it was leftovers from another table. Finally, we realized that other customers who appeared to be “white” were receiving better customer service than we were. When we went to pay our tab, the lady who finally seated us at the front counter had the audacity to ask us if everything was good. My daughter informed her of the terrible customer service and she just smiled and said she could write a note on the back of our ticket. I don’t recommend this establishment to anyone. Spend your money at a restaurant that provides good quality food and great customer service. This establishment needs training on equality, communication skills and customer service skills with minorities. It’s very overpriced and overrated for small servings of food.

The 2 old ladies hostess near the banquet room, had terrible customer service they treated me like they were better than me. That was my first and last time going. The server noticed that bad customer service and apologized for them. Not recommended.
