Opinions de Chowdar Bar Bay Shore
I was in the area and I wanted a lunch break. I looked online and saw all the good reviews. So I went. The New England clam chowder was delicious. Service was good. Recommended for a nice quick lunch
I love this place ! I have been coming here for over two decades and the food as well as the service has always been exceptional. The lemon panko crusted salmon over Caesar salad is out of this world! Ellen is so wonderful to talk with at the bar too!
First time visiting and I have to say, the food was amazing and our waiter was fabulous. He was social and talkative but not annoying at all. My sister and I have a friend are still talking about our experience today. Please, don’t change anything. Thank you for a Fantastic experience.
I grew up on Long Island, taught at the Middle School until I retired. We were frequent diners at the Clam Bar. I particularly fell in love with their Manhattan clam chowder. It’s so chock full of clams and vegetables! After retiring, we moved to Maine where, sadly, I have yet to see anything offered besides New England. So, whenever I returned to visit friends, I always stopped to get 4 or 5 quarts to bring back. Yes, I did freeze it for the trip. Pure heaven in the winter!
Good place to go if you miss the ferry 😂 Friends and I got the shrimp po boy, tacos (w/ sweet potato fries), fried calm on a roll, fish and chips. All were great! (Fish and chips don’t look as amazing but hits the spot)
The Bayshore chowder bar continues to be a favorite whenever I am in the neighborhood. The seafood is fantastic, the service is friendly, the atmosphere is relaxed, and make sure you try their Long Island clam chowder which is not like either New England or Manhattan style!
Had the grilled mako special clams casino and Manhattan and New England Chowder. Staff was awesome and friendly. Cook/owner even came put and chatted with us. Will definitely come back!
My go to meal is a cup of seafood bisque and a grilled cheese with fries. Great prices and very small town feel. The ascetic is old salty saloon. It’s awesome!
Still as good as ever. The clam chowder is a meal by itself, as is the seafood chowder. I'm told the rest of the food is excellent but I did not have room for any after the bowl of marvellous chowder.
I don't eat seafood but ate the Buffalo chicken wrap, which was out of this world. My family ate the clam chowder, which one member said has been consistently great for over 27 years.
Best seafood in the area! Their new England chowder and chili are phenomenal and their seafood is fresh. They know the ferry schedules as well, so quick service as well!
Just went here again and the place is great comfort food, their TSB sandwich is awesome and the new England clam chowder is very good. I searched Google at 9:40 pm and it showed them closed but I called and luckily their kitchen was open until 1030 on a Saturday night.
I’ve been enjoying the food, atmosphere and the friendly staff of Chowder Bar for pretty much the 30 years Lynda and Pat have been owners of this true seaside-beachy, seafood ‘shack’. Take a booth, table or pull up to the polyurethaned wood bar/counter. Do try their original Long Island Chowder. It’s *fantastic*!
Great Bayside local seafood restaurant experience. The amazing staff round out the exceptional local seafood with a vibe that is authentic. The soups are all delicious and available to go.
The management is superb. As you step inside, you feel the history and smell the delicious food being prepared. The service is A+. The management is superb. The food is to die for.
Highly recommend the chowder and fishburger. Food and service is always top notch. Only gripe is that prices have gotten a little expensive over the years. Still worth the trip!
Had some coconut shrimp, fried Cajun scallops along with a chicken blt. Food was outstanding. Parking was easy and free. Staff was friendly and helpful.
What an amazing little hole in the wall this place is! From the outside, it looks like a tiny little shack on the water, but on the inside it is super cozy with plenty of seating. We got the seafood bisque and the new england clam chowder and both were out of this world delicious! The price is right, the service is great, and the location can't be beat. Definitely plan on going back soon.
Always a 5-star experience. We love the New England soup! There's also the Cajun fries, calamari, clams casino, shrimp scampi, so much!! Ellen is one of the amazing servers. Ellen is personable, has knowledge of menu and a newly 2x Grandmother. We recommend this restaurant.
Always a good time at the Chowder Bar. Best NE Chowder in town. Please keep the Nashville Spicy Chicken Sandwich!
I just discovered this place when looking on google for someone where new to eat. I love everything about it. From the food to the friendly staff and the welcoming atmosphere. I have eaten here twice in the last two and half weeks! This has become my new favorite place. The peanut butter pie was delicious and my salmon was perfectly cooked. Will be returning regularly. If you couldn’t already tell... I highly recommend.
Great place to eat. Small but great atmosphere and great food. The seafood bisque is absolutely delicious. Probably the best I've ever had! Friendly staff make you feel welcomed.
A few weeks ago my husband and I came here for dinner for the first time, and as they say here we "got hooked." We have now been back a handful of times and plan to keep returning. This is truly a hidden gem, as a Bay Shore native I was surprised I had never been here before. Our server was incredible. Will butcher this beautiful name but Seirshe was attentive, charming and honest. She gave us good recommendations, as I had the famous "Fishwitch" and it did not disappoint. I came back with my husband last night and she was our server again. She made our night. If you are in the Bayshore area come here
The wait staff is extremely friendly and courteous. They are very attentive to your situation. If you are pressed for time and have a ferry to catch they will expedite your order and have you on your way in no time. The food is also great. I recommend the long island clam chowder, it is half Manhattan chowder and half New England chowder.
I love the chowder bar. Fantastic rustic nautical environment down by the bay. The chowder is outstanding, as it should be, but they offer much more. The seafood chowder is my personal favorite, but the baked clams are exceptional, and the shrimp cocktail with their own home made cocktail sauce is also worth the trip.
Great food, loved the Blackened Cajun catfish with zucchini and sweet potato fries. 😋 So good! Fun mural on the wall in the side room. Friendly wait staff. This will be our go to when visiting.
A great cozy little find with really good seafood. The clam chowder is a must (try the Long Island version) and the steamed mussels were some of the best I’ve ever had.
We just ate here this past Sunday evening. If you love Braun's out east on the North Fork, you'll enjoy stepping back in time here! Our table is third one on the right as you step DOWN into this historic landmark. Best view of sunset to one's left, over ferry terminal after I sit down. Even better with a glass of pinot grigio! Soup! All are great. Passed my at -home taste test this past winter, not salty or heavily seasoned. Stock up! February only month Chowder Pub is closed and is cold month for soup take out from here! Both Nicky's Clam and Chowder Bars should have Opening Day specials in unison /competition on March 1. Chili? Soup? Shrimp Cocktail. and Welcome Spring at Benjamin Beach! Any shrimp with Bay Seasoning is drenched in clarified butter on bed of mixed greens with additional butter in a cup for dipping! Tuna topped with cherry tomato and basil sauce, served with rice and steamed zucchini and Spanish onion was outrageously delish! Fish and chips with generous amount of homemade cole slaw and tartar sauce equally tasty and deserves 5 ⭐️alone. Close one's eyes and you could be in London, not Bay Shore! Our waiter Alex was extremely kind and well versed in menu specials. First time fresh tuna diner! Salmon ordered on previous occasions is equally good! You must order fried ice cream! Sandy divulged its secret ingredient to me only because I am celiac and must adhere to a gluten -free diet! Kindest , most accommodating dynamic duo of owners! It takes women to make one feel so at home in this fine , and artistic (sit in attached family room) place to eat really good, generous potions of fine food. Very kid friendly! Do stop in. Truly one of a kind !
It was awesome!!! I had the “Fried Catfish Wrap” I loved it the fish was very fresh and crispy and the homemade tarter sauce rocked ! All the flavors complimented the sandwich ! My husband had the “Rob Wrap” he enjoyed his meal so much he devoured it ! The meals where also well packaged and the staff their are very courteous and accommodating! Thanks guys ! 🥰💕
Great lunch place near the FI Ferry Terminal.
Great little hidden gem! Great food, great atmosphere great service. Skip those fancy places nearby and hang out with the Denise and crew at the Chowder House!
A true Gem in Bay Shore...among all the ferry boats sits this cute chowder house. Everything including the free parking is GREAT. Hot portions of great seafood..I'll be back...but don't tell anyone 😅😅😅
Seafood Bisque is supreme!!! Great little place near the water! Perfect for a bite before or after the ferry! Favorites include the spinach salad and pecan crusted talapia!!!
Had a wonderful Father's Day Dinner with Mom at the Chowder Bar Restaurant in Bay Shore, Long Island, New York! Mom ordered Shrimp Scampi over Linguine and I ordered the Broiled Seafood Combination Platter with Scallops Shrimp Flounder and Clams Casino with Rice Pilaf and Green and Yellow Squash and Onions. Hot Tea and Hot Coffee with their secret recipe Deep Fried Ice Cream for Dessert. Our food and service from our Wonderful Waitress "Sandy", was top notch and the free Weekend Valet service made for an awesome day.. Thank you so much Chowder Bar Restaurant, and we are looking forward to a return visit soon with the rest of our family!
Sweet little spot! Classic seafood, fair prices, and a cheerful staff. Must stop on the way to the ferry.
The Chowder Bar arguably has the best key lime pie on Long Island. I speak with authority because I am a key lime pie connoisseur. It is a wonder why the Chowder Bar has not won a “Bethpage Best of Long Island” award for its own version of the dessert. Just look at the photo. The filling is so creamy and tart. The graham cracker crust is perfectly crunchy. Many other enticing desserts are made on the premises, such as apple crisp and carrot cake, but I always come to the Chowder Bar, just for a slice of their key lime pie.
Really amazing great food selection & flavor. Worth is every time
They have some really amazing sauces and salad dressing. Fried Boats are so good.
Our go-to spot for home cooked food that is good value. Seafood bisque, grilled fish and chicken jambalaya are our favorites. Best carrot cake and key lime pie 🥧 in the world.
We make this part of our Fire Island vacation each year. Located across the street from the Seaview ferry more or less, and after 10 or 12 hours of dealing with airports and airline travel, it's a quick walk and a welcome wind down to really great chowder and a brew before hopping on the ferry to the island. I prefer the New England style chowder to the Manhatten style, but I have had both, and they are both very good. The atmosphere is always good, with friendly staff and even local workers who are quick to say hello and ask about your vacation plans. The service is as quick as you need it to be and we have come to look forward to this as the gateway to relaxation each year.
Cajun Catfish Tacos 🌮 are unbelievable! Staff is friendly and attentive. Becoming a reoccurring customer. Most importantly, my wife loves it also!
This place is really good. The service was amazing, everyone was really nice. All the sea food is fresh and delicious. We had a little of everything appetizers, soups, entrée, and desserts. And wasn't disappointed with anything. The interior was also very comfy and warm. When I am in this area I would definitely come back
It was a beautiful day outside so I ate outside with my family and my dog ,they had a bowl outside for my dog so I knew it was pet friendly. The food was really good the seafood bisque was wonderful with chunks of seafood in it. Everyone enjoyed their meal and the service was quick. I will definitely be back.
Amazing atmosphere, food, service and owners! This little restaurant has been serving Bayshore for over 35 years!! I would suggest the Chowder Flight where you can pick 3 different soups to try for under $9! One of the best New England Clam chowders on the Island!!!
This is my favorite place to get a slice of key lime pie. The graham cracker crust is brown and crispy. The filling is creamy and has a strong lime taste. I come here at least six times a year to have a slice. They have dessert specials as well. Below is a photo of a slice of Lemon Ice Box Pie. Note the crispy, brown graham cracker crust. It is so good!
My favorite restaurant in the world. Best seafood ever. Long island clam chowder is to die for. Everything I ever ordered was delicious. Service is great. Place is clean. Used to come here as a kid. I'm now 59. Place has been around forever for a reason. They have there own parking lot behind the building which is great.
Such a nice and homey place. Staff was wonderful and the food was absolutely delicious and most importantly fresh! We loved it.
A hidden gem on Long Island. Everyone should know this place by now. Don't know where to start? Read the menu entirely, and you will know that the chowder soups are the best. Do not skip these soups. You'll want a bowl, not a cup, and even then, you'll be asking for seconds. Don't sleep on the seafood bisque either. Definitely buy some to take home. The appetizers were a bit small, but with the prices of everything these days, you get what you paid for. The crab cakes were delicious and full of crab while other places go heavy on the breading instead. We ended up having the shrimp boat, shrimp po boy, blackened catfish tacos and shrimp salad. Everything was flavorful. Big portions as well. I do believe they are closed for the month of February but I will be going back myself when it opens in March.
Best New England chowder! And sweet potato corn chowder amazing too. Bang for the buck, good homey food with friendly staff.
What’s not to like - sitting here on a Wednesday late afternoon, an overcast low 70s mid July day. Indulging in a flight of chowders - always forgetting which one is my favorite (seafood bisque - technically a chowder?). Moving onto their baked clams, which are a little skimpy on the clam part but still tasty(take note owners please.) Went with the fish and chips today but can definitely splurge for a special. Great food, Blue Point Toasted Lager is the only draft on site and oysters are picked out back. Enjoy a non-pretentious experience that seems to be fleeting.
We found this place by chance after nearby restaurants had long waits — and we’re so glad we did! The food was delicious, the service fast and friendly, and the atmosphere relaxed and welcoming. Unlike the fancy spots next door, it’s a perfect place for families with kids — no stress if they make noise or a mess. Highly recommend!
The food is absolutely delicious and fresh. Service is amazing. Everyone that works here is so kind. Love coming here! 10/10 highly recommend. This place is a hidden gem for sure!
Nice little place that was built in 1947. It has that kind of charming vibe. The Long Island chowder is a mix of new England and Manhattan styles and is possibly the best clam chowder I've ever had. The shrimp and flounder are not overly spiced, which allows the breading and obviously fresh seafood flavors to shine through. The hot apple crisp with ice cream was a treat. After today's Neal, nothing has changed. Love that chowder. Highly recommended.
Very enjoyable. We started out with stuffed mushrooms as appetizer comes with 3 pieces they tasted great. Then I had the long island chowder and my husband had the lobster bisque both were served in small bowls they were creamy and delicious. My entree was fried fish sandwich with fries and coleslaw. My husbands entree was medley of seafood with side of zucchini and rice. Both our entrees were tasty and the serving was enough. Finally we had the famous fried ice cream which was a nice treat and so was the key lime pie. Both desserts were amazing. The server was extremely nice always had a smile on her face, constantly checking on us. This is our 3rd time visiting here and it won't be the last.
Chowder Bar is tucked in between the ferry and parking lots, but CB has passed the test of time with being around since 1946. This place is showing it's age but that adds to the ambiance, giving you that old rustic fishing boat feeling/decor making everything taste better. There are a bunch of soups/bisque's and some awards have been won, so be prepared to make several visits if you want to try them all. We had the seafood bisque, it was kinda cheesy, full of seafood flavor, very nice consistency, and some pieces of what seemed like imitation crab(I think). So I'd highly recommend trying their "soup/bisque flight" and sample a few at a time( I will for sure, see pic). I noticed a "Fishwich" on the menu, something I will surely be back for... Anyway you look at it the, owners (usually on hand and very friendly too) have kept this place going strong for a long time.
Incredible food and service! Met one of the owners, Lynda, who was super kind and personable!! The Long Island clam chowder is THE BEST CHOWDER I've ever had! 😋 The cherrystone clams and Blue Point oysters were delicious and shucked well!! Such a cute and charming maritime ambiance by the water. Lovely experience! Will definitely be back!!!🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟!!!!
I've lived on Long Island for all 33 years of my life so far and had never been to the Chowder Bar, which was a huge oversight on my part. The decor is eclectic without being too busy and it's an intimate place, but the food? Every single thing we ordered was absolutely fantastic. Obviously made fresh and by hand. The homemade lemonade was perfect, the French Onion soup was wonderful, and their fried shrimp is by far the best I've ever had. My group enjoyed both the New England and Manhattan clam chowders, my kid was thrilled with his first fried ice cream experience, and we look forward to coming back to try the Long Island Chowder as well as the rest of the menu. We briefly met Lynda, one of the owners, and she was very friendly and engaging, as was the rest of the staff. I definitely recommend maybe calling ahead as they were busy, but it was well worth the wait.
The Chowder bar is one of my favorite places to go. The food is always good. The spinach salad with warm dressing is delicious. And my favorite go to is the Fishwich. The flounder is so fresh. They have handout sweet pototoe fries. I highly recommend this cozy little spot by the ferries.
Honestly, I loved the atmosphere and the staff was terrific — they couldn’t have been better! My NE Clam Chowder was just OK, and maybe my expectations were too high.
I had the fried cat fish with French fries and the Cajun mussels and both were very good, my brother had the fried seafood platter and said it was a delicious. During the Covid-19 we eat outside were there are a few tables to sit and eat. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
The food is excellent and definitely worth the price, but the service is less than desirable.
Small place but the atmosphere was very nice, waitress was very friendly and service was great! Recommend for a nice lunch down by the water
Got fried clams on a roll for pickup and while the food was delicious, the portions were kind of small. I’m not sure if it was just to fit the takeout box, but I’ll definitely eat in one day to find out
Nice little hole in the wall place to grab some good food. Went in for a light lunch. Ordered dozen little neck clams on the half shell and the blackened catfish tacos to share. Excellent service and the tacos were huge and delicious. Couldn't get a drink other than beer wine and soda. They don't have a license to serve hard liquor. Overall a nice experience but beware they charge extra to use a credit card. Big mistake in my opinion. Probably won't go back for that reason.
I've been coming to the Chowder Bar for quite some time now and I love it. This cozy and very cute locale is one of my favourite spots. Along with some of the best soups on the island, their entrees are super fresh and very well priced. Always crowded, it's definitely worth the wait. Try it and you'll keep coming back.
Had lunch as a large group (11 people) here, the employees were very nice and helpful. The soups were good, broiled seafood platter was just alright. Parking in the back was very convenient.
Nice! Cozy! Fresh Oysters and Steamers are recommended. Fishwich is really yummy. Lobster Roll is nice. Stuffed shrimp is super delicious. Try their Key Lime Pie and Chocolate Brownie! Yummy! Thank you for the lovely meals! =)
Delicious food and reasonably priced. Our party all enjoyed our food. Our waitress was very attentive and helpful. Would highly recommend coming here. The valet parking gentlemen were extremely sociable.
Old style cooking done the right way. We had a shrimp po boy and a tuna melt. Generous portion with steak fries. Cole slaw fresh. Always a nice place to come to by the bay. Nice, friendly staff and the place is clean.
This little place is so needed in the ferry area of Bayshore. Grab some soup, grab some chili or have a big ole fish fry. The food is not bad. Beer and wine helps a little. And they have a very helpful To Go counter. All the staff are very friendly and helpful!
Was looking forward to a Bowl of New England Clam Chowder. I give it a B-. Could be creamier with more clams and taters. The search continues for a really good New England Clam Chowder.
Before our ferry to Fire Island, a relative recommended that we grab lunch at Chowder Bar, a fanciful and nautical restaurant that serves appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, wraps, burgers, fried boats, seafood entrees, and desserts. You can sit wherever you like. In the inner dining room, there is an under the sea mural with decorative clocks, paddles, and lanterns hanging on the wall. The staff were friendly and clarified any questions we had. We started our meal with a pitcher of Blue Point Summer Ale and a chilled mug of homemade Lemonade garnished with a lemon wedge. For our first course, we had soups - three of us had the New England Clam Chowder and one of us had the Seafood Bisque. The soup was thick, rich, creamy and tasty. It came with oyster crackers. For our main course, we shared the Fish Burger, Fishwich, Linguine with White Clam Sauce, and a large portion of Vegetable Du Jour. The Fish Burger consisted of fried flounder fillet, tomato, and lettuce on a toasted sesame bun served with tartar sauce and lemon. The Fishwich consisted of fried flounder fillet, tartar sauce, and melted cheddar cheese in between pan fried toast. It was a great twist to a grilled cheese sandwich. The Linguine with White Clam Sauce consisted of linguine topped with garlic, herbs, grated cheese, and littleneck clams. It was garlicky delicious. The Vegetable Du Jour consisted of zucchini, summer squash, and green beans cooked with butter. By the time we finished our meal, we did not save room for their homemade desserts (e.g., ice cream, fried ice cream, warm brownie sundae, apple crisp, key lime pie, and carrot cake).
Feels a bit harsh to give 3 stars, but it seems appropriate. We didn't hate our meal but I doubt we'll be back either. Our orders were hit or miss. Some foods were good, others were mediocre. Prices were all over the place. Some menu items felt a little steep (Fried boats, apps), others seemed fair(Seafood Sampler, Specials, sides, snack bar stuff).
Good fried clams, chowder, cole slaw and fried ice cream as well as homemade tartar sauce!! However, they need to have some fried sea scallops, crabs and oysters. Also, why do they serve cream of Turkey soup as a soup of the day?????? That was weird at a seafood place, why bother???
Food was good but over priced for a lunch over $70 for me and my mother. Upcharge on everything when prices are already high, portion just average not worth it for price. Food was good and clam chowder was good ask for Bowl not sure but very small. Funny how they charge fees for credit card and no discount for cash tired of restaurants raise prices, smaller portion sizes and fees for credit card and then tip. Staff was excellent. We own a business and have lowered prices to help families and no extra fees either. I would rather make less and do more business and make more in volume but seems like most businesses rather charge more for less customers.
The clam chowder was tasty but watery. The fried shrimps were tasty but small and a very small portion size. The french fries were obviously not fresh cut potatoes and made from frozen. It doesn't take a lot of effort to make fresh cut fries. The location is great, next to the ferry. The dining room is cozy and quaint. The wait staff is outstanding; very attentive and friendly. The prices are great. Overall a C+
There were very few people in the restaurant but very poor service. The flounder was tasteless, fried food overdone and clams linguine mediocre. Three of the four meals were served and we had to ask the server about the fourth meal which showed up later. The server did not check to see if everything was ok or if we needed anything. I left most of the flounder. We were given a $25 offer if we returned. Since we were visiting from Florida and will be leaving soon that was useless. I read the good reviews and had hoped for better service and food but was very disappointed.
Food is not very flavorful. Soup was good, but that was about it. We had the broiled seafood platter, it needed a lot of salt and lemon.
Ordered a chicken finger boat with cajun fries and a small container of clam chowder. Got charged $21.40 something. Tell me how that adds up? Been going to this place for 20 years. Never again. Fries werent even cajun and I got robbed.
We were very disappointed. The cup and bowl sizes of chowder are the same. And the crab cake were four little over deep fried cakes. There was always 2 large crab cakes. Very disappointed
This is easily the worst restaurant I have ever been to on Long Island... the food was very mediocre for the price and on top of that the staff and service was horrendous.. I have never had a server not clean our table, not want to explain some of the menu items and also just be so rude.. I don't know what her name was but she is pretty big and wore a cardigan , black hair ... the homemade dessert is not homemade at all.. the chocolate ice cream tasted like something from ben and jerrys but with so much freezer burn... they dont actually have enough parking either so they have valet parking so that they can fit all the cars in that tiny space.. overall it was awful .. don't go here..
