What a cool place. Was looking for a fun Izakaya. Food is great and drink selections are even better. Looking forward to coming back.
This place is a gem! I was looking for a place to get quality food after typical eating hours and this place did not disappoint! Besides the extensive menu, there is a huge selection of whiskey and sake! They even offer a"liquor locker" to store your bottle in the event that you can't finish it! The ambience features traditional architecture and art while the vibe is very laid back and cozy. They play great music and the servers were so very friendly and offered great suggestions! I definitely recommend trying this place. I know we'll be back!
Galvin was our waiter and he was amazing. He had a great attitude and provided excellent customer service to my wife and me. He made outstanding recommendations for our dishes, and everything we ordered was delicious. We truly enjoyed our experience and will definitely be back.
Always loved coming here, but we had Galvin as our server, made the experience ten times better. Super high energy, super funny, matched all the vibes. Sukiyaki don was amazing as per usual, love the happy hour.
food and service are great ! i usually only place takeout orders so the small conversation while your waiting speaks volumes showing they care about the people who they serve to dine in or takeout ! music is trendy and fun atmosphere is great , prices are very reasonable too Definitely recommend !! plus their late night hours are super convenient
My experience at Toukei last night was lovely. From the ambience, modern interior deco, good service and delicious food it all wowed me! We started off with some seaweed salad, kimchi, pretty standard. The server recommended we try the Fried Burdock Root which he described as being a more flavorful french fry and apparently they had been out for a few months. The texture was more firm than a french fry and had more chew/flavor. I would definitely recommend/eat it again. I've never had a truffle flavored ramen before but it was so flavorful along with the toppings. The chashu was a thick piece that was flavorful and tender, the fat melted nicely and wasn't overbearing. The soft boiled egg was perfectly cooked and marinated as well. The chirashi bowl had 14 pieces of fish which I thought was quite substantial. The octopus was tender and all the fish was very fresh. I'm coming back to try their drinks next (huge selection of japanese whiskeys) and will update!
My brother and I have been on the lookout for a good Yakitori spot. Oddly, it seems there aren’t too many choices in Houston. BUT, the Yakitori here is good! They actually grill with charcoal, as they should! Not sure why some places use electric? Anyone know why? It’s definitely not traditional. Their Japanese whisky selection is also insane!
First time coming here and had a really awesome time! We got here before the late dinner crowd came so we got seated immediately which is a plus. Very modern look and perfectly lit for a nice dinner date. Kim took very good care of us. She recommended her the popular ones on the menu and they were very good. The winter silk sake, which we had 2 bottles of, was sweet and smooth. We ordered mostly skewers and a couple of hot appetizers, we were full! Our favorite was the Ribeye Caps, so tender and flavorful! Will definitely come back to try more items in the menu!
I love the awesome dishes they have here. The fact that it's small plates you can try everything. The menu is pictured so it really tempts you to order everything. They become pricey if you over order. Ambiance is nice for date nights, hangouts. Service is usually good, fast and attentive. Everything pictured is 5/5 Very yummy and flavorful. So many dishes. Chicken skin 4/5 Good crunch to add. Can get a bit hard Chicken kaarage 2/5 Kinda hard and batter is chewy. Not the fave. The skewer don 2/5 It was kinda underwhelming.
Really really delicious foods. Tons of menu options but we ordered a ton of appetizers and yakitori. The food was simple but delicious. Everything came out fast and we had really good service. Someone was always getting us food, taking new orders, and refilling our drinks. It wasn’t too expensive either. I will be back.
Tried out this place after seeing it in the area and it was amazing! When we arrived there we did wait about 2 minutes to be seated until the waitress (which seemed to be the only one there at the moment) noticed us. They have an extensive selection of alcohol and the food is a bit smaller of a selection but delicious. The prices for the food are pretty reasonable and everything looks amazing. My Salmon bowl was amazing, the food tasted super fresh and had tons of favor! The drinks were strong but also delicious. I will definitely be coming back to try other things.
This place is fantastic! The decor and seating is very aesthetically attractive, and of course the whole theme is a Japanese izakaya style restaurant. Food was incredible. Started with grilled baby octopus on skewers, so satisfying and smoky. Karaage was fresh and crispy. Star of the show was the ramen with bouncy thin noodles and the most savory tonkotsu broth. Definitely marked this on my map of Japanese spots. I can’t wait to try their other dishes.
Had an amazing time at this place. I was extremely surprised as I walked in. I didn't expect something that looked like it came out of a Japanese TV show or movie! It gave quite an interesting vibe. The wood accents, shelving with grills, paintings, etc all made the place a lot of fun to experience. The service was excellent. Itzel was our server and she did an amazing job. It looked like she was in training but she didn't lack anything. She regularly checked on us to make sure our experience was a good one. We ordered a few appetizers; all were quite good and enjoyable. We then ordered Ramen bowls and a bowl of roast pork belly. Those were also quite good. The cocktails were excellent. I also enjoyed the sake flight. The Toki highball was definitely the highlight when it came to the drinks! They had an actual highball machine allowing you to have the true highball experience. Overall it was a really good place and is highly recommended.
This place is a very chill spot: a must go to as a hangout location. The food is very decent and I love the sukiyaki don plus the ramen. It did not take long for us to get our food. The portions are not that big per the price but it's alright. You just have to be patient with the service, it does get pretty busy.
I love izakayas and this one just didn't do it for me. I've given it multiple chances. I like that it's in chinatown and open late but the food is fine it hust doesn't hit. The staff are nice enough as is the ambience.
The dining experience at this ramen restaurant was a mixed bag. Undoubtedly, the food was delectable, offering rich flavors that satisfied our taste buds. However, the portion sizes seemed inadequate in relation to the prices charged, leaving us wanting more value for the money spent. Unfortunately, our encounter with the service left much to be desired. The initial interaction with the waitress was rocky, marked by an unpleasant attitude. Moreover, our group of five was served only four bowls of ramen, leading us to assume the missing dish would arrive later. As we continued eating, we eventually had to bring to their attention that an order was mistakenly omitted. This incident was compounded by the lack of proactive service—no check-ins or refills, which could have salvaged the experience, especially considering it was a relatively slow day for the restaurant. Despite the delightful flavors of the food, the service issues and portion sizes left us feeling somewhat disappointed and hoping for improvement in their service standards to match the excellence of their cuisine.
Small Japanese plates in a relaxed atmosphere. Service was good. The food was good. Ended up ordering alot but wasn’t really blown away by the taste of any of the dishes, except the fish here was really fresh, the salmon was delicious. The cocktails definitely need to be worked on, they were mediocre at best.
Ordered the shisamo, “mountain man” sake, and truffle shoyu. The fish was excellent, very well balanced and delicate and was further enhanced with the lemon and dipping sauce (mayo based) provided. The sake was great as well but I can’t compare it to much since im not too much of a sake drinker. Onto the ramen. It was easily the best ramen I’ve had. Everything was executed very well. The chashu was perfectly cooked, tinder, very flavorful, and had a bit thicker cut than other chashu I’ve had. The noodles themselves had a very nice bite to them and in my opinion, were perfectly done. The broth was sublime. Very subtle flavors all coming in together to form a delightful brother packed with umami. The only disappointment was the tamago which I found to be a bit less marinated than I wanted but was also perfectly cooked. UPDATE: I don't know of they changed ownership or vendors but the food quality is much lower than the last time I visited. This WAS the closest ramen I've had in the states in terms of quality compared to Japan but now it tastes like it came from an instant noodle pack. Noodle quality is terrible, broth tasted extremely diluted, egg was not marinated, chashu has no flavor and has a chewy texture.
Ate here with my mom, aunt, uncle, nephew, and cousin. We walked in at 7:15 on a Friday evening and we were promptly seated. The food was great and service was great, or so we thought. We also ordered an entree to go for my brother in law. By the time we finished and received the check, I paid quickly because there were several guests at the bar and host stand waiting to be seated. I should have reviewed the check more closely but I provided a credit card and quickly signed the receipt without looking at it so the restaurant could quickly turn the table. I included just under 25% tip. Hours later at home I reviewed the receipt and I noticed that 18% was already included and no one from the restaurant ever mentioned that either on the phone when I called to inquire about a reservation, in person when we were seated, or when the check / credit card slip were brought to me. This was my second trip to Toukei and I was excited to introduce the restaurant to my family. Ultimately I’m responsible for over tipping but as someone that worked many years as a waiter in casual fine dining restaurants, I’m extremely disappointed that the automatic gratuity wasn’t pointed out when the check was delivered.
Coming here for the fifth time just for the first time having a bad experience. Toukei has always been my favorite restaurant but this time was a little unhappy about the service. Food was okay. The Fish Tonkotsu Ramen turned out didn’t have actual fish and it’s just “fish paste on the top” (the bartender explained so). Overall it’s just an average ramen. Salmon Don wasn’t spicy, at all! If you like spicy, you would have to ask for the chili paste which they charge you 2 bucks (even more expensive than the egg). Their chili paste is good but isn’t worth that much. They bring you soy sauce on the side so you can put it in as your likings. Nothing special. The appetizer was good. We love the sauce. Service: The bartender is cool and nice, he did a good job. The waitress at the bar isn’t nice and it seems like she doesn’t wanna do her job. She didn’t repeat the orders which later on she asked again if we wanna order it (so unprofessional). She asked if we wanted to get the egg and we said yes, but turned out our bowl did not get the egg as we wanted so we had to call her to get the egg.
The food is mediocre, and the service is very bad. I ordered wine, and every time I have to ask the waiter to serve the wine! Our food was almost finished, so we were given wine. We only ordered one cup, and then two cups were served, and there was no refund. In addition, there are five of us, and they forced me to tip me 20%. And I didn't get the service I deserved.
Didn’t try the food, but the atmosphere is good for grabbing a couple drinks. Not a bad selection of Japanese whiskey, but… they serve it with small ice ????? instead of a proper rock. Melts too fast, and your whiskey tastes like water in minutes. They really need someone who knows how to serve whiskey and pay attention to the key details that make it right.
5 stars for all of the delicious food, and ONE STAR FOR SERVER NAMED “LY”. I have been to this places a few times and it’s my favorite place. She has served me a few times already. She was not really happy the previous times but not too much. However, tonight, she was extremely rude to my friends and me. She asked me but the music was load and I didn’t understand the question. She repeated the second time and started raisde her voice up. After that, she never came back to my table to check up. We had to ask other servers for spoon (for our Unagi Don), more water, and etc. She should know that we were a group of 8 so she will automatically get 18% of the gratuity so just please do whatever she neee to do. I didn’t expect more. She never smiled to us. This is the worst service ever!
