Lovely place!!! One of the most well decorated Chinese restaurants I've ever been to. The menu has two separate sections for american Chinese & Chinese Chinese which was a nice touch.Gonna come back and try other menu items
Great friendly staff great food.. I've had better fried rice though... but the egg foo yong was delicious, hot and sour soup egg rolls magnificent 😋
Absolutely a five-star restaurant! What impressed me most was their service—they truly have an eye for the needs of their guests. When we accidentally knocked over a glass, the staff came to help clean up immediately, without showing the slightest impatience, and even proactively asked if we needed a replacement. This kind of thoughtfulness greatly enhanced our dining experience. Of course, the presentation and taste of the dishes were also on point—the sauerkraut fish slices were truly memorable. A restaurant run with such care definitely deserves our support!
Best in the city for its style. They have authentic dishes, and Americanized dishes. I ordered apps and entrees to go for 4 and a beer while I waited. The gentleman behind the counter asked me to sit in a private dining room while I waited. When he came in with my beer, he also gifted me with a marinated cucumber salad that I'm at a loss of words to describe. He said it went good with beer, and he knew what he was talking about. The sauce was sweet, spicy, and fresh. It also had cilantro, garlic, and peanuts. The cucumber was fresh and crisp. My wife and I will be back soon, and we are definitely starting with that cucumber salad.
I have never been disappointed when I order at Great Wall. The food is always fresh and taste good. I Love the Shrimp Fried Rice and they will add any additional items when you ask. This place has been around a very long time, I recall eating there in 1990. Great Food, Great Job to Great Wall!
It is very difficult to find authentic Chinese food in the South. Most Chinese restaurants around here are so heavily geared toward the American palate that they taste like something different altogether. I'm not Chinese and didn't have Chinese food that wasn't the equivalent of fast food until my teens. Once I had authentic Chinese food, I was hooked. I travel all the time, and finding true quality Chinese food away from the West Coast or New England isn't easy, but I found this place recommended highly online, and was absolutely thrilled with what I found. This is the real deal, folks. If your conception of Chinese food started at a buffet, you're about to discover a whole new world of cuisine. Some of the menu will include things you've never seen before, but I've probably tried half of it at this point, and I haven't had a bad meal yet. Anything that says it's spicy is actually spicy, which is a rarity in the South. The Great Wall is on par with some of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco. I live in the Florida Panhandle and have to drive nearly 4 hours to get to Birmingham, but the Great Wall is by far the best Chinese restaurant within a four hour radius of me. I don't know how to give it higher praise than that. Fantastic.
Hands down, the best meal we’ve had in forever. We ordered the whole fish and the sizzling rice soup, and I genuinely wish I could rate it 10 out of 5—because this meal deserves it. The fish? Crispy, tender, perfectly spiced, and absolutely stunning to look at and eat. Layers of heat, garlic, and herbs with charred edges that had us leaning in for more. The sizzling rice soup is also so good. When we picked it up, the staff kindly checked in—“Are you sure? And it’s a whole fish.” Let me tell you: YES. We were sure. And they delivered the sexiest, most satisfying meal we’ve had in a hot minute. Every bite was full of bold flavor and joy. Great Wall, you are doing the most, and we are so here for it. Will 1000% be ordering again.
Going to dream about those wontons later. The service was incredible, and our waiter, Daniel, was super sweet. The ambiance is very nice and cozy. The glaze on my sesame chicken was unreal. Moved to the top of the ranks as far as Chinese restaurants go. But also top five for just any restaurant in Birmingham in my book. I’ll be back soon.
This is a nice sit-down restaurant that also does take-out. We unintentionally showed up 30 minutes before they closed for their lunch period, but we asked if it would be alright to dine in, and they said yes. I appreciated that so I tipped pretty well for them being accommodating. Service was very attentive and the food came out quickly, which I expected since we came before they were supposed to close. I got the pork lo mein plate with steamed white rice, as well as an egg roll. The egg roll was a little bland in my opinion, but the lo mein was AMAZING! The white rice tasted nice, too. The amount of food was enough for at least two meals, so I took home leftovers as well. They reheated quite well. The inside of the restaurant is absolutely beautiful with the decorations and red seats. I would definitely come back here!
After some days in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and then Anderson and Clemson, South Carolina, where we encountered some of the most unpalatable food imaginable, it was such a pleasure to find Great Wall Chinese restaurant in Birmingham. It has been voted the best Chinese restaurant in Alabama, and with good reason. The food is real, authentic, and tasty. We had lamb with green chili, stir-fried rice cake with Napa cabbage, and braised dried bean curd sticks with black mushroom and tofu (all pictured below). Every dish was delicious, as were the pot stickers with which we began, and the amounts were so generous that we have a second take-out meal for tomorrow. Service was friendly, courteous, and prompt, and the atmosphere of the place very pleasant. I highly recommend it.
Few things get me more excited than Great Wall out with new dishes! Grabbed a friend to try the Hunan style spicy liver and the Chongqing Hotpot, along with the old favorite mustard fish fillet. The liver gains so much depth of flavor from the black bean sauce, perfectly highlighted by the Szechuan pepper flavor, unreal! The Chongqing Hotpot is like a farmhouse bowl of joy, fresh and flavorful blood curds, fatty and tender bites of intestine, fish fillet, fun chewy beef tripe, all balanced on a bed of soy bean sprouts, mmmm! Mustard fish fillet is as good as we’ve always held in our belief of Great Wall’s ability to deliver. The Great Wall faithfuls, we have a new chapter to be excited about!
I found myself driving past this place a lot and wondering about how good the food was. Tonight, we decided to put an end to that wondering and give it a try. For an appetizer we ordered the steamed dumplings and for entrées, I ordered the chicken pad thai and my sister ordered the beef lo mein. We opted for take out so we could eat at home. The food was ready so fast. We waited for thirty minutes at most, and it was ready. The staff was friendly, had everything all packaged up and cashed us out. Everything tasted delicious and was still very hot and fresh when we arrived back home. I'm glad we had the dumplings to eat while we waited for our entrées to cool of. The portions were giant, and now I have the perfect lunch for tomorrow as well. 10 out of 10 all around, and I will definitely be a regular patron here.
This place was a surprise. Red Pearl at Homewood is my default go to Chinese restaurant forever. But decided to try out Great Wall Chinese Restaurant; I have been hearing good reviews on authentic food for sometime now. It didn’t disappoint. We tried Garlic chicken, juicy dumplings and chef’s special flaming pan chicken with vegetables. They all were super good, taste was authentic and portion was generous. Price wise, I felt was it was tad bit pricer compared to other Chinese restaurant around it. On the positive side, they offer good authentic food, plenty of seating arrangements, minimal wait time and quick service, ample parking spots, centrally located, open late till 10 pm. Will definitely visit again for some dan dan noodle.
Visited on a weekday.. The place isn't crowded and the ambiance is really nice.. If you're looking for an authentic chinese restaurant, this is the place to go. We ordered their lunch special sweet and sour shrimp and chicken with rice, chicken flaming pan with rice, steamed shrimp dumplings (1 order is 6pcs.) and combo fried rice. Bill ended with $52.18 plus tip.. I was actually looking for siomai and sesame balls, but isn't available here.. but will keep on looking for a chinese restaurant that has it. Recommended for a visit.
my niece ordered a beef dish and was mistakenly brought a combo. when she sent it back, they fixed it and it came back out with a hair on it. they "remade" it and it was the same food but on a different plate. she didn't eat at all and they still made us pay for it! wouldn't recommend
01/17/26 we usually have a great experience eating here. We dined with a party of six during lunch hours. i ordered the kung pao beef lunch special, but because i said special there was unfortunately a misunderstanding. i received the kung pao chicken and shrimp, which wasn't a big deal, but i asked to have it remade as what i ordered. the server tried to tell me that i ordered wrong, even though i clearly said beef, but he had the order remade anyway. by the time it was made again, everyone else had received their dishes and i was the only one not eating. the second time my food came out, there was a thick black hair on the plate. we sent it back immediately, and they took it to the kitchen and put the same food on a different plate. i know this because the rice comes out usually on the plate shaped by a bowl, and it was just slid off with a fork and lost its original shape. i ended up not eating at all. they never checked in after bringing it out the third time, and i didn't take a single bite. i had lost my appetite. we ended up being charged for both the chicken and shrimp combo, and the kung pao beef with the hair. i will not be bringing my business here again after today.
The food was average. The waiters wasn't nice at all.But they were very attentive to all the white customers. I will never come back
I used to come here all the time and always got the General Tso’s chicken with extra sauce it was my favorite. But over time, the quality became hit or miss, so I stopped going for a while. I recently decided to give them one last try and ordered my usual. Unfortunately, the chicken tasted old and had a strange smell. It didn’t seem fresh at all and honestly it was pretty disappointing. This was my final attempt to give them a chance, but it’s clear the consistency just isn’t there anymore.
We came to the Great Wall after being away for a long, long time. We did not know they closed at 3 o’clock as there was no sign. The door was wide open. We walked in and we were told that basically we couldn’t come there. They only had 20 minutes. Both of us are disabled, my friend is mobility challenge and I’m visually impaired. I understand that you have to close to prepare meals for dinner. But if you’re going to do that, please put a close sign up. I’m very disappointed. I would love to be able to give a good review and I could give a good review but it’s been a while since I ate there so I can’t. Hopefully everyone else has a good experience, this time I did not.
