We had such a wonderful dining experience here. Our waitress Madison was knowledgeable and personable, her energy lit up the room! The manager, David, was attentive and engaging. He went above and beyond to accommodate us. It’s quite evident the employees at this establishment are treated well and love their job. From what we heard, the owners have cultivated this remarkable atmosphere. We had such a fabulous anniversary dinner and loved spending it with the Hell or High Water family. Thank you for hosting us :)
We’d been looking forward to visiting Hell or High Water since we’d heard they were opening, and when we finally got a chance to visit tonight it more than lived up to our expectations. The service was prompt, friendly, and helpful. The atmosphere was inviting, from the midcentury standards music to the decor where we sat in the Highwater Room upstairs to the sweeping mountain views beyond the rooftop deck. And the food and drinks were delicious from start to finish. We rarely order steak at restaurants because we’re often happier with steaks we grill at home, but the Foothills Butcher Shop 28 day dry-aged bone-in ribeye was spectacular. Other standouts were the agnolotti and the deviled eggs, although we enjoyed everything we tried. We can’t wait to return to sample more of the menu.
Our dinner last night was delicious! This was our second visit and we brought some friends along who wanted to try it. They did not disappoint. Every dish was outstanding, from the appetizers, trout spread & potato waffle, to the entrees, butternut squash pasta, pappardelle w/ beef, mushroom dish & the Ribeye tomahawk, with homemade donuts that were outstanding! Prepare yourself for a “slowed-down” experience since it’s tapas. Food comes out as it is ready & is meant for sharing. Great signature drinks & wine selection too! Upstairs seating has great atmosphere and look forward to outdoor experience when weather warms up!
Our visit to Hell or High Water was a flawlessly delicious experience! This is much more than a restaurant. We were immediately given a warm welcome and were impressed by the upscale yet comfortable & romantic decor. Our server suggested an excellent wine to accompany or exceptional meal of heavenly scotch olives, the best trout dip we've ever had, a fun and delicious tater-tot waffle, and perfect bone in aged ribeye for two with creamed kale. Even the potatoes were exceptional! We will absolutely return and look forward to sharing this fantastic venue with friends.
We visited this restaurant to celebrate my father-in-law’s birthday. We brought my nine-month-old child, and they were incredibly accommodating, providing us with a high chair from their brewery next door. The food was absolutely delicious. Our starters, the Scotch Olives and Tot Waffle, were a great start. For dinner, we shared the 25-day aged bone-in ribeye and the pan-seared flounder. The quality of the meat was exceptional, and the prices were reasonable considering that they own their own butcher shop.
This is exactly the kind of restaurant we hope to discover when visiting a new town. The menu felt intentional, with every dish thoughtfully prepared, perfectly cooked, and beautifully presented. The atmosphere struck the perfect balance between cozy and refined, and the staff went above and beyond to make the experience feel personal and welcoming. Exceptional food paired with genuine hospitality made this a meal we won’t forget.
Delicious and creative! We had scotch olives 🫒 kimchi deviled eggs, bread service, a beautiful grain salad and a ragu pasta. Both had drinks and it was very reasonable. Will be back! I want to try the whole menu now
This was the first time we've tried Hell or High Water, but we'll be back. It's basically a tapas place and wine bar. We were there mid day, and for some reason were the only people there. It has a somewhat eclectic selection of small plates, all of which we tried were quite good. It's an excellent location with an excellent atmosphere. We had the tater tot waffle, the Calabacitas, and the Scotch Olives, all of which were very good.
As someone who grew up in Asheville and went to school in Swannanoa I am so proud of this quality of restaurant in blk mtn! Absolutely love our evening. The wait staff were tentative, knowledge, curiosity and helpful, we had Justine. The food and drinks were incredible we had the beef tartare ( our only “complaint” is we wish it had the crust just on the edge so you could taste the meat better), trout dip with beef tallow saltines, a steak with the fries and for dessert we had the spumoni joconde. As someone who works in the accessibility industry, I was glad to see it being fully wheelchair accessible including an elevator! Can’t wait to go back!
Simply one of the best restaurants my wife and I have ever been to. From the service (Jimmy is awesome) to the views, the amazing food and drinks…you can’t go wrong. The pictures tell the story. Don’t sleep on the grilled cheese, hands down the best I’ve ever had.
First visit to Hell or High Water and it won't be our last!! EVERYTHING was spectacular - we sat on the patio on a crisp Halloween evening. (Oh! The view!) We were immediately greeted by Christina and welcomed. We ordered the smoked trout appetizer, I had the seasonal pumpkin Old Fashioned, (which was delicious) and then hubs ordered the boneless ribeye (perfectly cooked to medium rare) with a glass of red wine and I had the Maritake Mushrooms. What a perfect combo! We shared a bit of my mushrooms with his steak and WOW! What a flavor surprise. I also enjoyed dipping the very thin, crispy fries in the garlic cream sauce in my dish..Trust me, you will be happy. They also treated our 80 lb GoldenDoodle with love, kindness, and water (we got him his own burger patty..Rugby gives this place 2 paws up 🐾). Christian and Side kick- y'all were great! Hope to return soon.
I can’t speak highly enough of Hell or High Water. I’ve been a handful of times since they opened and I have never left dissatisfied. The atmosphere is incredibly classy and elegant, the service is top notch, the drinks are always exceptional and oh my gosh…the food! The menu flows with the season, and the flavors are impeccable. You can always get a great steak, house made pasta, seafood tapas, and fresh breads. I recommend the spumoni cake for dessert.
This place tops the charts of the best restaurants I have ever been to. Amazing experience, great and friendly staff and food is on par with some Michelin Star places I have been to but is on the more affordable side for the obvious preparation that goes into the servings. I will come here every visit!
Hell or High Water is a must visit in Black Mountain! I love how their whole concept is farm to table. They also own a butcher shop, and use the whole animal in various dishes at the restaurant. We had a butternut squash soup, garden salad, cornbread, and a pork chop that was juicy and cooked to perfection. Our waiter Rocky was fantastic and had so much knowledge about wine and food pairings. The atmosphere is stunning with the rooftop bar and two different outdoor patios. I can't wait to come back and try new things on their menu!!
Absolutely recommend this place. I called to let the restaurant know we were going to be a bit late to our reservation, the lady that picked up was so absolutely nice letting us know to take our time and get there safely… Then the host was so kind and showed us around this lovely building. The waiter was great too! He was so attentive his suggestions were on point! The Food! We were so pleasantly surprised with all the dishes! The flavors so beautifully crafted together. The tenderness of the chicken like no other! The bar tender made our daughter a fantastic lemonade even though not in the menu. She was absolutely kind! Recomend 100%
The staff is incredibly kind and accommodating. The drinks are well balanced. The food is unique and memorable. The atmosphere and the rooftop are 100% worth planning for ahead of time and reserving to ensure that you get a place! My second time here and it gets better each time. Thank you to Hell or High Water.
This is our third time dining at this restaurant, each time has been a great experience, with outstanding service, food with rich and multilayered flavor profiles. Atmosphere is delightful. Our server was Ben and he did a fantastic Job. Congratulations to the entire team, to the chef your creativity coming
5/5 and can't wait to go back! Easily the best meal and experience we've had in a while. We shared the shaved carrot salad, golden tile yakitori, duck confit, and oatmeal porter & ginger cake. I'd happily order all again. The attention to detail and care that went into each dish was unbelievable. The people were as great as the food.
We enjoyed so many items from the menu. Some of our favorites were the provoleta, the trout dip, the shaved carrot salad, the beet salad, and the mussels. They had a slightly spicy kick, and the sourdough bread was so good.
I recently dined at this outstanding restaurant, and I can't recommend it highly enough! The tile fish was perfectly cooked. The duck was some of the best I've ever had. The pasta was fresh and al dente, with a delightful sauce that was amazing. The desert was phenomenal and I can't say enough about the cocktails. Each cocktail was expertly crafted, adding a refreshing twist to our meal. The service was impeccable, attentive without being intrusive, making our evening truly special. A five-star experience all around! 🌟
Many menu courses to choose from on the menu, with most intended to be shared. The best starter was the provoleta, although it was a tiny bit overcooked on the bottom. We also enjoyed the tater tot waffle and the charcuterie board. Next we enjoyed the cavatelli and the scallops. For our entrees, we were absolutely thrilled with the steaks -- ribeye and bone-in strip steaks. Our compliments to the chef. Great big love for Steve, our waiter, as he did a phenomenal job taking care of us from beginning to end.
What a fun bar! It's huge and has lots of outdoor balconies. The food is great!
Hell or High Water - Owned by the Foothills Honest Meats We were invited by friends to check out this restaurant recently opened after Hurricane Helene destroyed most of the Black Mountain / Swannanoa valley. They soft opened in around December 2024 and only have the upstairs dining available. The family style three course meals for a fixed price of $35 per person was amazing. The choices for each course are limited to three at this time. As they grow, this may change. Service and drinks were clearly professional. We will be back.
Hell or High Water in Black Mountain is absolutely phenomenal! The rooftop bar is next-level—the views are to die for and create such a relaxed, elevated atmosphere. The food is excellent—fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented—and the service is truly impeccable. Every team member we encountered was kind, attentive, and welcoming. Whether you’re looking for a casual night out or a spot to impress guests, this place is a total gem. Can’t recommend it enough!
The best place in the Mountains! You have to go and go again. The steak was amazing. Eggs, salad, tater Toto waffle and bread. We will be back!
Went for appetizers and drinks. Definitely some good cooks in the kitchen! Enjoyable tasty food and nice atmosphere. I will be back. Thanks! - (you should allow dogs ) more people would be there more often, just sayingggg...
I've dined at Hell or High Water twice now. They have the friendliest staff ever, the food was fantastic, and you can't beat the views from the rooftop. Can't wait to go back!
The food here is out of this world delicious. Everything is made from scratch. The service was excellent and the ambiance relaxed and cozy. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Perfection from start to finish. Amazing food, service and atmosphere. Love that they are farm to table.
I celebrated my birthday with some girlfriends at Hell or Highwater last night and was so impressed with our experience!! The woman that seated me was extremely warm and attentive and our waitress Abigail was really friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. The food was AMAZING as were the drinks and Abigail made sure I knew what food had gluten in it and what was gluten free. They even put a candle in my dessert and sang me happy birthday!! I can't wait to go again on another girl's night!
I don’t want to even list what we ordered. Two shared and two individual dishes were extraordinary! Astounding …! And, we did not even order any of their amazing prime beef offerings. Service with Madison, really gracious, knowledgeable and so friendly. Thanks very much Hell and High Water.
Came here to get a bunch appetizers and drinks before the Holly Jolly parade. Amazing food and great service. You can tell a lot of thought went into creating and preparing. Jimmy was serving us and he was a lot of fun. Very knowledgeable on his cocktails and steered us right. Would definitely recommend for anyone looking a spot to eat in Black Mountain. Hope to return soon!
The food and service was impeccable. Madison was our server and she was incredibly knowledgeable, kind, and attentive. The GM David spoke to us as though we were long time friends and went out of his way to make sure our visit was amazing. The food was some of the best I've had. Will definitely be going back!
Can’t recommend this place enough! Our food was absolutely amazing, 5 stars. The smoked trout dip is an instant favorite. We ordered the Pappardelle and the New York Strip and both were phenomenal, melt in your mouth. We loved to hear the nose to tail philosophy and that everything was locally sourced. The service was great, we loved the atmosphere and will certainly be back.
An exceptional dining experience in Black Mountain, North Carolina! Every element — from the attentive service to the exquisite presentation — was flawless. The Beef Tartare was truly extraordinary, perfectly balanced and infused with authentic Turkish spices that elevated every bite. Whether you’re a local or traveling through the Blue Ridge Mountains, this restaurant is a must-visit destination for fine dining in Black Mountain. A memorable culinary experience that defines elevated Southern hospitality.
Most amazing dining experience we have had. Small plate pairing were perfect. If you want the most tender, juicy steak come here! Our server Madi S is the one to ask for! She suggested drinks, small plates and great service. Don’t leave Black Mountain without eating here!!
This was our first visit to Hell or High Water. The experience was excellent from the moment we were greeted. We shared the trout dip, scotch olives and foothills meat board. All three dishes were delicious and a work of art. Our main entrees were the Pappardelle and Port Belly - which we also shared, both were fantastic. We ended our meal with the Zeppole - absolutely melt in your mouth goodness. Serving sizes are on the smaller side which is perfect for sharing. Great atmosphere, our server, Bailey was attentive but not intrusive. All the staff was very friendly. We will definitely go back.
Despite the silly name, this place is pretty great and has only gotten better since opening. Kind of a strange layout for a restaurant/bar, but they've done the best they can with the existing building. Great food options. I'm still calling it Icehouse
I have eaten here several times, and it is always impressive. The food is delicious every single time, and the hand crafted cocktails are some of the best I have ever tasted. The wine selection includes many good options that I have never heard of before. Sunday nights sometime seem like a different restaurant, as they offer some items that are not listed on the menu, and they seem to run out of certain menu items early, but I am fairly sure that is only because of many vendors and nearby places are closed on Sunday. The staff is friendly and attentive, and Rocky is particularly knowledgeable and humorous. The menu is mostly smaller dishes with big flavor on a seasonal rotation, so I will have to stop by regularly to see what they come up with next, and hopefully one day they will have some lasagna.
I had the Delmonico steak, cooked perfectly and excellent flavor. My wife had the Pappardelle pasta dish which was also delicious. Indoor seating area is a bit loud, but manageable.
Fantastic find! This was our first visit to Black Mountain and we just happened into this restaurant for lunch. They only started opening for lunch the day before. We had the most lovely server named Abigael! She had a great personality and we found ourselves wanting to come back just to spend more time with her. My husband had the pork katsu sandwich and I had the BBQ chicken sandwich. He said his was very tender and flavorful. My sandwich had pulled tender chicken with a wonderful coleslaw and it was likely the best sandwich I’ve ever eaten. They make their bread in house and it’s fantastic. They had a nice selection of wines and bourbons also. We ran into Chef Eric on the way out and he was super nice and spoke with us for a few minutes. Please give this place a try if you’re in black Mountain! It’s a darling little town.
Had valentine's day dinner here. They were very busy. I'll start with the bad. When it gets busy it's really loud. That's it, that's all the bad. The food is fresh, healthy, and interesting. We did Tapas style ordered 3-4 small plates and then a main. The sauce on the seafood dish was bomb! Our cocktails were also incredible. I'm loathe to say this because I don't want management to see, but they could easily raise their prices. I had the opposite of sticker shock when the check came. Overall we have a new must try spot for when we have visitors.
First time dining here and we were blown away. The quality of the food is so impressive local farm to table. My fiance is a big steak nerd and the steaks here are incredible. But make sure to try everything on their menu, each dish really stood out and was super unique. We loved that their food was cooked in beef tallow, you can tell the difference in quality and flavor. Madison was our server, you tell how passionate she is about the food & we were impressed how knowledgeable towards each individual dish down to every ingredient and where everything came from. Thank you Madison for taking care of us like we were family. Can’t wait to be back again for that Rib Rye dinner yum.
We live in West AVL & enjoy trying new places. HoHW is EXCELLENT, all the way around. Beautiful bar space & every dish was outstanding. Try the tater tot waffle, gem lettuce salad & the amazing tartar. Staff took great care of us. Shout out to Manager Amanda, sweet spirit. You’ve got a great team!
Expensive but worth it! Excellent from start to finish. Great cocktails, wonderful menu of small plates that were all very well prepared and tasty. Get the deviled eggs - loved them, and the Hawaiian rolls. Entrees and desserts also were outstanding. The dining room can get a bit loud but for the most part was manageable. Service was top notch without being obtrusive. We'll definitely be back for another special occasion.
Great atmosphere, food and cocktails were really yummy and different! Roof top area is awesome! Service could be a little more friendly. Efficient but a little cold. But would go back for the atmosphere and cocktails alone!
Staff was excellent. Food was less so. Food was oversalted. Skirt steak was overwhelmingly tough. Devilled eggs were meh. Faye and Amanda were superb.
Our first night at this restaurant this past weekend. We reserved 4 days in advance for 'locals appreciation'. It wasn't until we sat down at our table that we were informed that the restaurant ran out of the price fix menu the night prior, but we were not notified. With that, we weren't offered even a small discount or other options. Husband's ribeye was excellent but not a lot of meat for a $100+ main dish that was supposed to feed 'up to 3 people'. The mushroom dish had a garlic sauce that was good, but too rich for me to order again. I would much more highly recommend the Foothills butcher store, the store where sandwiches are made, and their adjacent casual dining area 'The Grange', where there is always great food, drinks and bar service, a large area to spread out, bring the kids and dog on a leash.
I really wanted to like this restaurant, especially since we booked our reservation weeks in advance and were required to agree to a $25-per-person cancellation fee if canceled within 48 hours. Unfortunately, the experience didn’t come close to matching the expectations—or the policy. We arrived as a party of six and were initially shown to a four-person table. Even after pointing out our reservation, we were still squeezed into a table far too small for our group, which made the start of the meal uncomfortable. We ordered cocktails and three tapas, including a meat and cheese board from a local butchery. For $25, we were served four slices of cheese and a chicken liver mousse—an extremely underwhelming portion for the price. The service throughout was slow, inattentive, and honestly pretty poor, which only added to our disappointment. Although we arrived with every intention of enjoying a full dinner, we ended up leaving after our appetizers and first round of drinks. After speaking with several locals later, we learned that many of them actually don’t recommend this spot, which unfortunately matched our experience. Overall, not worth the time, cost, or cancellation threat. We won’t be returning. Many other excellent dining options in the area to choose from.
We started with the sourdough bread, which came with a quarter-size (depth and width) of butter and a tablespoon of jelly, which I liked. Then, came the Scotch olives, which were just OK. We were served two appetizers before our drinks came out, and we ordered wine and beer, which we were told came in a can, so we weren't sure why it took so long. Finally, we got our entrees. The steak not only looked awful, it was full of fat and didn't taste good. The pappardelle was lackluster, and there was so much fat on the pork bellies that you could barely find the meat. When we asked for refills on our drinks, the server told us the bar was backed up (for a canned beer and wine). My husband took one bite of his steak, and I took one bite of the pappardelle, and our server didn't even ask us if anything was wrong with the food, but in fairness, other members of the staff did come by our table, and we didn't complain. I guess we were all in shock that the whole experience was so bad. All in all, it was one of the worst meals we have ever been served, and we paid $200 for the privilege.
