We stopped in the morning of the Macy's Thanksgiving parade to grab some to-go breakfast sandwiches from a non-chain. It was a little pricey at nearly $40 for 4 breakfast bagel sandwiches but they were SO good! Everyone was very timely and friendly. I highly recommend for a good sit down or take out meal!
For over 40 years the Astro Diner has been serving up an affordable menu in midtown. The portions are large and presented well. The dining area is cozy with a friendly attentive staff. For all the traffic they keep the place clean. May this diner go on for another 40 years. Its a classic.
Was not planning to eat here but got caught in a rainstorm while visiting the city and was cold and hungry so I walked in randomly to this diner and so glad I did! The staff here were so nice. The food was great and I was happy with hot coffee after getting soaked in the rain. The nice server kept refilling my coffee which was an added bonus. I visit this part of the city often and will definitely be back!!
The wait was a bit long, and the service was a bit slow, but the food was spectacular, and the portions were generous. Of particular note is their freshly squeezed orange juice, which is probably the best OJ I've ever had! This is a diner I would definitely visit again the next time I'm in New York, but I would definitely make sure to allocate plenty of time for this busy and crowded place!
A true classic NYC diner. Great timely food. Attentive wait staff. Reasonable priced.
Awesome food and good service- fast and delicious. Best diner experience in many years
Lovely food and staff! Busy both times we had food, so must be good 😋
My family and I came here, not only once but twice while we were in town for a quick trip to the city! We are a family of six and spent about $160 each meal. For our family, everyone cleaned their plate so it was well worth the money. There was never a wait to get us seated. It is a small diner, but it was not as loud as we thought it was going to be so that was great. We were able to have a conversation and hear each other. Our waitress, Voula (sp?) was awesome! She was so sweet and kind! She was the reason we came back a second time for sure!
We sat at the bar and the service was great. Food was served fast and hot. Definitely have to try the the crepes.
Great spot! Fast, friendly service with a TON of options. Food was awesome! Would definitely come again!
A classic American Diner in the heart of Manhattan since 1980. We ordered 2 pastrami sandwiches and than regular coffees and enjoyed our time over green seats. You can find whatever you like in their menu. Brekfast, Lunch or Dinner, doesn’t matter; you’ll find something to eat that suits you. By the way; service was great also.
Everything was good. I was there for business for just a few weeks and stopped by here a couple times. No issues.
A beautiful little diamond in the ruff , i really enjoyed that atmosphere of this diner & the lamb gyro was amazing. One of the best i've had in the city.
Astro Diner or as we read it on the green sign - “Restaurant” : If you want a VERY quick breakfast and good quality cooked exactly as desired - go here! Carnagie Diner was great food but very slow. This is for good food but super fast! Our server was great, attentive and fast as lightning too! Fast without sacrificing quality is hard to find.
Best pancakes of my life! Great service and so so so kind. Would 100% recommend.
Amazing service and absolutely fantastic food - well oiled machine and I cannot wait to go back! Service was superb and the food was HOT!
I was first introduced to Astro in 2013, and since then I have been every time I visit Manhattan. If you're looking for something to get you ready for a day in the Big Apple, this is what you need! Shun the souless chains, and head straight for an independent institution. It's a traditional urban diner, with everything you would expect; great service, great food and a great atmosphere. It feels like the menu has grown over the years, but I tend to stick to a couple of classics. It's fairly priced for the area (everything in Manhattan feels expensive at the moment!) and don't forget to pick up one of thier mugs to take home as a souvenier!
Friendly service and very attentive staff. The food came out a little slower than anticipated but definitely understandable as we ordered eggplant Parmesan and a breakfast waffle. Great home cooked meals, would come back just for the service -- our waiter was so kind! Thank you for feeding us late!
Great breakfast spot in Midtown Manhattan, with an extensive menu and ultra-fast service, This is our go-to spot for breakfast in this part of town. This morning, I had the bagel and lox platter, which was excellent. The salmon in particular was super fresh.
Real Tasty!!! Every time it is good Very good breakfast. Typical diner food but very good and great people watching. Get a booth on the windows or sit outside and watch the world go by. If you know what a chocolate egg cream is this is the place to get one that is how you remember from the "good old days". Excellent bagel, egg and bacon sandwich too. Check out all of our reviews. If we do not like it we do no review it so all of the ones you see are places that are fantastic. Follow us if you like. We had over 17 million views in 2021 and we thank you for that. We don't get paid, we just love to eat. Be sure to click on "RobH" at the top of this review to see all of them and to follow us if you like good food and FUN.
First time to New York City. Looking for a straight forward breakfast with Something a could eat on the menu. Thus restaurant was perfect. Service was quick. Staff was polite. Prices were reasonable. Food was excellent. Going back tomorrow. Extremely busy but efficiently managed. 5 star
Even after several months, i recall the quality of each dish. The cost won't leave you feeling cheated. It's been too long since I received such good service. Every selection I've made was flavorful. We're certain we'll be back.
Great classic diner experience! They have a huge variety to choose from on their menu for breakfast. You can get healthier options like the varieties of yogurt parfaits or sweet options like pancakes. The pancake menu is huge and you'll have a hard time deciding but you can't go wrong with any of the options. I got the Dulce De Leche pancakes and tried the Polynesian pancakes my friend got. Both were amazing! I took leftovers of my pancakes home. The place was very busy when we went but the service was still pretty good.
What can I say I wanted to experience the ultimate New York American breakfast and it fulfilled are taste buds amazing food friendly staff what more can you wish for the only criticism I can give is a thought they see an area would have been bigger but I'm guessing it's because it's New York loved it
I dont know WHY Hilton concierge looked at me with my pregnant belly and my toddler (and my family of 4) and said, "yes this place is family friendly." Older kids? Absolutely. It was a nightmare and it wasn’t even the place's fault. It's a tight place. Enough space for one person to walk down. I had to leave with my toddler while my daughter and spouse stayed. They liked the food and didn't bring any back for us. So below is my daughters perspective. My 8 year old daughter says the food was 6 stars out of 5. She said service was also 6 stars out of 5. She was able to ask for help and they helped. She said the atmosphere was calm and she got to talk to her dad. So the ratings reflect her experience. So...thank you for giving her a good experience on this trip.
What a gem… fastest coffee in the city.. family owned and wonderful place.. have a good food at a classic dinner.. just got into New York and of course I’m going to Astro for some breakfast and some delicious coffee. This is a great place to just chill out relax and nice quiet atmosphere nice family own restaurant and the coffee is amazing.
Everything was amazing! This is one of the best restaurants in NYC and it is a good spot to come back to. There is a good variety of good things to get, and so you can try something new every time.
Peak New York diner vibes - it’s a small space but service is lightning fast so they hustle people in and out so you don’t wait long even if it’s full. Had to get a mug for myself because the aesthetic was just so classic. I wouldn’t say it’s overly pricey considering where it is in New York either, and the portions are enormous.
We stumbled across Astro on our first night in NY. We hadn’t been in the city more than a couple of hours and we just wanted something light. All the staff were friendly and helpful. We opted for open faced BBQ brisket with french fries, pickles and coleslaw….the serving has more than enough and very tasty. We returned the next morning for breakfast and I had pancakes,(when in America 🇺🇸), with Canadian bacon…a strange combination to an English palate BUT it works really well and was delicious. The menu is VAST and very varied…well worth stopping by for something to eat. Ps it’s a lot better than my pictures show. 👍😋👍😋👍😋👍
Uk hoilday goer. I recomend this place as the Staff are so helpful. They helped explan the tip system and gave us great advise for things to do while in new york. Food price is understandable and the food is delicious. I had a french toast sandwich bestbthing ive ever had.
Went here bc we had vouchers from time share presentation. They have gluten free bread so you can get sandwiches made accordingly. Food was good, not the best I've ever had but no complaints. Service was awesome, everyone spoke perfect English but the guys working there let me practice my terrible Spanish with them. Overall 5 stars.
LOVED this place, I don't know why more people don't talk about it but then it would turn into a tourist trap I suppose. Had a great sandwich for breakfast. Sat at the counter which was very nostalgic. Staff was super friendly and talkative. My sandwich came out without it's bacon and it was fixed quickly and professionally. HIGHLY recommend! Prices are very affordable.
I don't know why the Astro Diner is not rated higher on Google reviews. It is by far the best non-touristy diner on the west side of Midtown. They have a very large, diverse menu, and the food is great. I've eaten here many dozens of times, and while the decor inside is nothing special, the experience has been fantastic on every single occasion. The service, specifically up front at the bar area, is the best. We had the carrot cake for dessert this visit, and it was out of this world. Maybe the best carrot cake that we have ever had!
Love love loved our egg, avocado and cheese sandwiches at Astro! We were craving some comfort food and this hit the spot perfectly. Really cool little diner with quick service and fresh ingredients. The sandwiches were about $15 each, so pretty good for NYC standards! Will definitely be back!
Went for breakfast here this morning with my wife and son and was a great experience. The service was fantastic, really friendly and fast and efficient and made sure you were well looked after. The food was a great surprise as didn’t expect it to be as good as it was, was definitely worth far more than they charge. I had the Californian Benedict which was a great take on Eggs Benedict. We also had the Nutella Pancakes and Poached eggs on toast and they were just as good. If you are near Astros in Midtown then definitely drop in for breakfast when you are in New York you will not be disappointed.
I was looking for a quick and cheap but good lunch in the area and this turned out to be the ideal place: I had the grilled chicken quesadillas which were so good, my husband had the burger which was not as amazing but really fine, service was ok, the place isn’t anything special but honestly it doesn’t matter as it’s good and efficient.
The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere with limited seating, providing an intimate dining experience. The food is flavorful, though the portion sizes are on the smaller side. While the prices may be a bit higher compared to similar establishments in the area, the quality of the dishes stands out and makes it a worthwhile choice for a pleasant meal.
So the menu here is huge! I got the California Benedict and it was really good! The toast it came on was a little cold but the avocado and eggs were hot. As for the atmosphere, this place is crazy busy and kind of cramped. So if you are an anxious person, find another breakfast joint! We literally had a waitress ask us to leave because other guests were waiting, mind you-we had not been sitting at our 2 person table for long but we were waiting for our check so that we COULD leave. It's also a bit pricey for a diner style breakfast (everything was about $17 or more).
For over a decade, my weekends have truly begun at 6 AM at Astro Diner. While Midtown Manhattan is constantly changing, this landmark remains a reliable haven for great coffee and classic comfort food. The secret isn’t just the massive omelets or Nutella pancakes—it’s the people. After ten years of visits, the staff feels like family. Juan, Vaela, Rogelio, Hector, Lidia, Giota, Andrea, Adolfo, Mario, and Alvaro—along with chefs Pablo and Jose—provide a level of warmth and efficiency that makes even the earliest mornings feel welcoming. If you’re on 6th Avenue, skip the overpriced hotel breakfast. Grab a stool or a booth here for an authentic NYC experience rooted in consistency and friendly faces." 4 1/2 Stars..
We saw this when we were walking and decided to stop because we very hungry for lunch. It was a yummy choice. The food was very expensive but it was fresh. I got the Buffalo chicken wrap with fries. The others got a party melt and Ruben. The pickles were yummy! The service was very quick!
Busy NY diner, but totally worth the wait. Which is really the only downside. You can’t go wrong with the Pancakes and bacon. My husband had The San Fransisco, it’s served surrounded by cutout potato skins, with cheddar, Swiss , turkey and the insides of those potatoes. And what breakfast is complete without some grits. Which were of course very yummy!
We stopped in for lunch before a show at a theatre nearby. The location is great. The diner is small and a bit cramped. If there’s a line, people are huddled together waiting for an open table. It’s a mixture of tourists and locals. The servers are nice, but hurried. Food is served fast, our fries could have used more time in the fryer… however the cheeseburger was delicious!! Perfectly made but needed addition of salt and pepper. Large menu… Pricey.
We were looking for a diner for breakfast and Astro was near our hotel. Highly recommend if you love HUGE portions. One member of our party was missing England and wanted a full English breakfast, these guys have an ‘across the pond’ menu which was sweet. It’s the first full English breakfast I’ve seen with fries but there were no complaints from my daughter. Service was swift as seems to be the pace in New York - in & out as fast as you can but really nice place. The atmosphere with road noise, plasma TVs and the bustle of the cafe was too much for me hence 4* for environment.
So, we see this place after leaving a show and thought we'd try it out for breakfast in the morning. It had the look of a typical dinner and it was walking distance from the hotel. We arrived at 8am, and had no problem getting seated, but as soon as we walked through the plastic barrier, we were greeted with "Good Morning, follow me" and not even given the option to sit inside. They seated us outside, which was enclosed with plastic and small heaters above. The temp was around 39 degrees, and it was ok, but not comfortable. We asked if we could sit inside and the waitress accommodated us. Once inside there were five open booths that I could see, so not sure what their reasoning is on seating. The food, nothing to write home about. The strawberry shortcake pancakes were good. All that you would expect, whip cream and sauce. The Western Omelette, was not an Omelette. Scramble eggs with a little ham, onions and green peppers thrown on top while on the grill and folded over twice. Don't think there was any cheese. Very dry and over cooked. Atmosphere was kinda like sit, eat, leave. The waitress did refill our coffee twice, but there was not any type of small talk. All business. I wouldn't say not to try the place, I'm sure they have meals that are worth it, but don't expect too much.
Decent but $70 for 2 for breakfast. My coffee was half done and realized my mug had lipstick on it, I wasn’t wearing any, so that’s cool. The food tasted good if I’m honest but not $70 good. That B grade was missed by me though. Yikes. Try to stick with A’s. Had pancakes eggs and bacon x2 and 2 drinks and it was $70.
This place is really small and for the price you don’t get your moneys worth. I got a cheesesteak and fries, the food came out fast but it had no flavor and tasted bad. I cannot and would not recommend this place.
Good service and location, but that's it. The food was not good at all. I had a roast beef sandwich. It consisted of bread, meat, and lettuce. That's it. No sauce, no tomatoes. SUPER basic food for top dollar. Don't waste your time.
Quick and easy if you are nearby and need to get in and out, but other than that it’s expensive for what it is and probably not worth the visit. I can see a nostalgic factor to the seniors who frequent here but if you’re looking for a good diner with lots of options and bang for your buck, this one’s not it. We got two fairly small, standard dishes (egg and ham sandwich + BLT) and it was over $50 incl. tax/tip. On top of that, this place is very small and even walking in the aisles was hard… and I’m a relatively tiny person. The setup isn’t good for lounging and with the prices high, food quality pretty OK, safe to say we won’t be coming back.
Classic tourist trap. Impatient and insensitive waiters. Exorbitant prices for mediocre food. Dishes are not tasty and I'm still being subtle. The place has an unpleasant attitude, everything says give me your money and go. I really don't recommend going near it despite the inviting design. There were 4 of us and we received a bill without the option of discussion, including an inflated tip from a rude waiter that is served to you upside down. In short, avoid.
I love diners, especially in NYC and I really wanted to give this place a fair shake but both times were not that great in the same week. First time I ordered a chicken Caesar wrap. A minute later they asked if I ordered their California chicken wrap and I said no, the Caesar. The wrap came out and I feel like they started the California and then when I corrected them they finished it as a Caesar because it had both Caesar dressing and guacamole on it. Second time I ordered chicken tenders and fries. Their fries are pretty bland and you have to season them (I never season anything with salt) and there was a piece of fried chicken wing in my tenders.
Live down the block and wanted a quick omelette before going to the park, born and raised in New York so unless I’m ready to spend some money I know where to stay away from, just wanted simple affordable breakfast. I’m leaving this review because this place is just wrong. Walked in put me and 1 in ring booth then I sat a larger both and had to get approval from owner/manager then I ordered a western omelette no potatoes or toast and a side of back and apple juice. I was an idiot for not looking at the menu, it was $40 for this corner hole diner. Others came in and they server said they aren’t allowed to let anyone sit unless he approves. Sad place. Server was good food was good but not $50 for an omelette here
Total disappointment. The menu talked up a pancake with strawberries, but what I got was one single strawberry sliced into four tiny pieces. The food was overpriced for what you actually receive. On top of that, the staff looked like they couldn't care less. The attitude was terrible from start to finish. The only thing worth mentioning is the architecture. Everything else felt like a complete waste.
