Always fresh tasty seafood. I switch between the fried shrimp and fried fish. My wife likes the fried oysters. Lots of parking and plenty of outdoor seating. Great water views of sailboats and jet skiers.
I been coming here for years..love the food and fast service
My family and I have been coming here for years. We love the fried shrimp and fries 🍟. The frog legs are okay but the pina colada is great (perfect consistently). Manhattan clam chowder is really good and the size is good.
First time here last Friday. Seafood was flavorful . Only complaint would be that I wish the shrimp and calamari were hot when served. Fried lobster tail was perfect.
My family and I have being coming to Johnny for over 40yrs . It always has the same taste and even staff. They are awesome
If you want fried seafood that won't break the bank out on City Island, this is the place to go. It's basic and that is A-OK. Scallops and clams were the big winners.
Classic staple place to eat if you grew up in The Bronx. Service is always quick & easy. Food is always fresh & delicious. Atmosphere is nostalgic. To eat/drink by any body of water is always a welcomed & sought after experience. I've loved coming here all my life.
For A quick bite of seafood, Johnny's Reef is the place to go! I've been going since I was a child. They don’t disappoint! If you eat outside, be careful of the seagulls...they love Johnny's too! Enjoy!😋
Classic, casual seaside restaurant, portions are huge, everything is fresh. Scallops are huge and cooked perfectly. French fries and coke are good too. There's a reason this place has been around so long. Cash only, be prepared. There's a full bar as well. Kids can get burgers, dogs or nugs. Order and pay at the counter and dining is cafeteria style with great view of the Long Island sound/East Chester Sound with the Throg Neck bridge in the distance. We make the trip every time we visit NYC, it's worth it. Not a fancy place, just great food and lots of it.
This place has been the best always. Simply put, the best place you can go to with family and not spend over the top. Food has always been great.
The place is really nice. I love the views, the food is delicious, the workers are polite. The frog legs were really good! Quick service too!
The food was great! I got the fried shrimp and my husband got the fried scallops. Both were great portions and fantastic flavor. We went between lunch and dinner hours and it was still slammed with people. The line to get into the parking lot at early dinner time was already getting long. Get there early people! Nice views by the water
It's been 4 years since my last visit and the food is better than ever we had fried shrimp scallops, whitening, red snapper all fried frys and coleslaw comes with every order we also had drinks strawberry daiquiri long island ice tea, banana margarita delicious I'll be back next year
I am a senior now, so I came this past Thursday (June 20, 2023) morning with a group from the NORC program. Johnny's Reef is CASH ONLY! Good thing they had an ATM machine. I feasted on frog legs. It was very nice to be able to sit and eat and not worry about birds swooping down, or baptizing you or your food with poop. There are wires overhead that one can barely see, but they prevent the birds from entering the space. Best idea they have had. The frog legs were excellent. I just wish they offered other vegetables as side orders. The frog legs only come with fries. Besides corn, they do not offer other options. However, I was happy to have the frog legs as I have not seen them offered any other place.
We recently dined at Johnny’s on City Island in the Bronx. While it may lack the frills of upscale restaurants, if you're a seafood lover looking for a reliably tasty meal with a view, this is the go-to spot! The highlight for me was the fried lobster tails – they were absolutely delicious and always hit the spot. The batter was crispy, and the lobster inside was tender and flavorful. It's a must-try! What sets this place apart is its optimal view of the Long Island Sound. The waterfront setting adds an extra layer of enjoyment to your dining experience. It's perfect for a relaxed meal with friends or family.
Wanna eat some good seafood....like a lot of what you'll find at the restaurant but without the extra charges? Go for Johnny's. Plus the tartar sauce is amazing!
City Island is our spot for a Seafood Getaway as we travel from Maryland at least once a month. We frequented Johnnies Reef often back in the late 80's and 90's and decided to check them out as they were still in business. Still customer friendly and food cooked with great texture. We ordered our favorites fried lobster tails and shrimp. Both were tender, but seemed as though the seasoning was decreased, making the taste somewhat bland. The Pina Colada's were still amazing and we will return again when we travel back to City Island. Even though the seasoning was a little bland, they still deserve (5) stars.
I don’t eat usually fried food, but the Chicken liver with the lemon here jeez, least once in every summertime for the past 6-7 years.. Don’t skip the shrimps! Everything always fresh not oily, menu on the wall big section fish, calamari, clams, frog legs, but burgers shakes also! They have bar! Johnny’s Reef located end of the City Island (last house on the left) sometimes people act like in the movie little crazy because parking a little tricky there . Just be patient and prepare, summer always busy there. You can sit in- or outside, if jet skis around I love to watch the “show” just like yesterday. Great place if you wanna pick up something and chill a bit after a beach day ! Price is amazing, you will get huge amount of food ! Cash only.
My boyfriend brought me here on a food adventure on City Island. The place has been open for many decades. They have a huge variety of fried seafood. They also have raw clams and raw oysters. We got the soft shell crabs and the raw clams. We loved the food as it was hot and scrumptious. We also got the white clam chowder which was a potato base rather than the red clam chowder which is a tomato base. It was a pretty good portion for $6. You have to try the house made tartar sauce. All prices include taxes. They only accept cash. My boyfriend also mentioned that the fries are a huge improvement compared to a few years ago. There are birds that you can feed too if you have leftover fries.
Loved the setup! Tables distanced. Clean up crew on standby. Food was delish as always! So glad we got to go. On a rainy Thursday...thinking noone would be there...BUT NOPE, it was full. That's cause they ROCK!! A much needed outing for food and it didn't disappoint. THANK YOU!!
It's been at least 8 years since I last visited Johnny's Reef and it's better than ever! I ordered the Fried calamari and it was absolutely delicious. Calamari was very fresh and tender, and not too heavily breaded. It came with french fries, which also were really good, and coleslaw, which I found not so great..but I didn't go there for coleslaw!! The portion was very generous, it could easily be shared with another person, I was being greedy but still was only able to make my way through 1/2 of it! I visited around 3pm, on a Tuesday which was perfect, a good amount of people, but not very crowded.
Been coming here for 20 years! My Dad used to take me here after a day of fishing at the bridge. Nothing but GREAT memories and INCREDIBLE food. The portions are proof that Johnny’s Reef really knows how to take care of their customers! Johnny’s Reef will always hold a special place in my heart, and of course in my stomach!
Old-school fish spot that brings the memories with good fried food. You can't beat the price, drinks or nostalgic atmosphere. Brings me back to my youth every single time.
What can I say... OMG! It was so good! We went to Johnny's Reef in City Island, NY - YES THE BONX. The food was amazing. They had a wonderful assortment of steamed and fried food. Everybody left with a very full belly. We waited on about a half hour line. They even had a QR code so we could see the menu from our phones while we waited patiently!! Food prep was quick and easy. They were making everything fresh like it came out of the sea. Pricing was fair for the fare. Everything was delicious. I will be back.
I love Johnny's been coming here since I was a kid. It was also my parent's favorite spot. Their location is great because you can enjoy your meals with a great view of the water, ofcourse if your not afraid of the flock of seaguls constantly flying over. The food is fresh and budget friendly, the place has a nostalgic feel...which I like, some may not. The only down fall is their system of lines for food pick up. You would have to make one line for your food order, then get on another line for beverages....its a little annoiying, plus they only accept CASH but theres plenty of ATMs on site.
A bit of a trek from Manhattan, but if you wanna treat yourself + friends to fresh buckets of cherry stones, little necks, oysters and scallops at an unbeatable price, this is the chill spot albeit a bit deep (*gotta take the 6 to the end of the line in Pelham Bay, then get on the Bx29 bus toward Orchard Beach)
The only reason I came out this far was for this. City Island and Johnny's Reef. This is not a spot you just happen to go to, it takes planning, preparation, saving and probably some fasting. I go all out when I come here becuase it's fast seafood at it's best, steamed, raw or fried. You order at the counter for things you want, so plan your order with friends so you can get what you want all at once. Send one to get the fried's, one to get the steamed, raw, etc. It looks like any seasonal shack on the eastern seaboard, but just a tad busier and a tad nicer. Service is good becuase it's far enough away from the NYC grind that people aint tryna bring that vibe. They're trying to have a different experience. It's got great views. Cash only of course. Seating is cafeteria style. I usually have to go for a walk afterwards to help digest everything. Prices are high if you indulge or come with your whole family, but it's kinda in line if your tryna splurge and go big. My usual order is steamed snow crab legs, fried calamari, fried clam strips, steamed cherry's and little necks (or raw if it's daytime or late summer) and a steamed whole snapper if I'm with more than 1 person. It's a feast, but worth a gout attack. It's fresh seafood that's well prepared and simple. You can't go wrong on the cocktail sauces, butter, lemon on most items.
Stopped for a quick lunch, simple no frills spot, laid back atmosphere, nice views. Had the galamah and a henny colada. Everything was great but the calamari was very "leggy" which I don't mind but I know some people do. Also be advised there's a lot of gulls in the parking lot so maybe don't go fresh off a car wash.
Just came back again and as usual this place just hits I truly like the vibe the views just overall a dope spot in city island Been coming here since I was a kid. place has change a lot but over all I think it got better. I enjoyed today. Food was good shrimp was good overall cool spot as usual. not my go to anymore in city island but never a miss. Worth it Came back again for Mother’s Day and like always this place just brings back so many memories They changed their French fries and it’s was a good change it was so good loved it had the fried whitening and the red snapper both was amazing the red snapper definitely worth the extra price. This place will always be what it is to me because of memories I’m glad they are taking steps to do new things so more people can start to make memories and have new generations here to enjoy good food for good prices. My ig is @imbroke_eats & @imbroke_rob
I’ve been coming to Johnnys since I was a child. It’s located at the back of city island on the left hand side. Cash only establishment with plenty of parking. Amazing outside view of the water. They also provide a portion of the outside seating with a covered section so you don’t have to directly be in the sun. Ordered the usual basket of Fried Shrimp 🍤 and a basket of Lobster tails. It definitely hit the spot Johnnys always had the best tartare sauce on city island d nothing compares. Staff is always friendly respectable and hard working remember to tip.
Made my annual cycling pilgrimage here from Long Island. If you visit City island on a bicycle then Johnny’s Reef is a must. 🥇🥇 This venue easily accommodates 100 or more cyclists with a water view and outdoor seating. The vibes are good 👍. I noticed majority of the crowd have some fried seafood and a beer. A 16 oz Corona is only $5 & Coors lite is $4. Tax included. CASH ONLY. My shrimp basket with fries went well with a corona. I generally don’t drink while cycling but today was an exception. Very likely the busiest venue in city island. I noticed all the locals come here especially the off duty bus drivers 👍.
The fillet of sole was all of that and some chips. The French fries were freshly cut and fried to perfection and so was the fish. Great service doesn’t take long for your food to be fried on the spot so you know it’s fresh and this place stays packed with people. Do you know the food is moving. The corn on the cob with the melted butter will have you closing your eyes. Tbe view is perfect close to the water you can sit outside and enjoy the ljve scenery of people sailing, jet skiing. Great place happy eating
First time in City Island! As soon as you enter the restaurant there is a long line, there are many seafood option to choose from either broil or fried. I chose the fried lobster tail and shrimps and it was delicious. I also enjoyed the thick cut French fries and the tartar sauce. There was a lot of outdoor seating towards the back which is nice and relaxing. Definitely recommend just don’t feed the seagulls 😊
I love this place. I have been coming here for 38yrs and they are still the same. Lines can get long, but they have an effective system, so you move fast. Sea Food is simple but good. Not the place to go if you want fancy. Atmosphere is nice. Everyone was hanging out, just enjoying themselves and the food. I love it as much as I did 38yrs ago.
Cash only!! Lobster tail steam comes in 5 small ones for $36. Fresh and delicious. I recommend it. Snow crab legs are uncomfortable to eat because there are no tools. I ordered 1 dozen little necks, but it's a little salty. They serve clam soup as a cup, but it's too salty.
Very fast. They are attentive and organized. Huge place. The food was great. The ribs was okay not that good could of been better. Theres lots of restaurants around this area. The strawberry daiquiri with henny was amazing. The blue drink was wack didnt really like it. They have table service you can sit inside or outside. In the deck you cannot smoke. They have a parking lot.
I'm not that into seafood but went last weekend on a Saturday night and it was jam packed!! I tried frogs legs for the first time and it was really good (kinda tastes like duck). We also had ribs, wings and whiting. Fair warning, the whiting has bones in it so be careful when eating it and giving it to small children. The sauces are great, and we had our food within a 25-30 min period. It was hella crowded even though it was cold out so we ended up using their outdoor tables. Overall, everything was good, but the seating area gets a bit dirty as people come and go because it's cafeteria style seating so you basically clean off the area yourself. In the summer, it gets even more crowded so you might have a hard time finding seating inside and outside.
This place never disappoints. There are tons of outdoor tables for you to social distance. Two lines when you are inside (one for food and one for alcoholic drinks). Took one star off for the small and dirty bathroom. Otherwise this is my go to place whenever we are near city island. Took some photos for the menus for everyone. Reasonably priced also.
Prime location, reasonable prices and great food. The food was ready on spot and steaming hot. Everything is set up at "stations" to make the flow go. There are four stations: drinks/ desserts, food, condiment, and alcoholic beverages. Seating inside our outside. In the outside there is a overhead cover and the bird are not as aggressive as i remember from my childhood years. Parking lot was well laid out and even with the amount of customers the was an abundance of spots available. This is also the spot where you can look over at the historical Hart's Island aka Potters Field. There are binocular stands mounted for one to get an up close and personal look across the water as well. Only gave 4 stars due to "cash only" posted everywhere (there is an ATM onsite). And I did not see this listed in anything I viewed prior to getting there. Personally not a problem for me, I just happened to overhear two other patrons ask, Guy behind the counter was a bit abrasive, in assuming they get that question alot.
Ok where do I start? This place gets PACKED and you have to wait in line for a while before going into the restaurant. The people in line are not socially distancing and will literally stand directly behind you. They only allow 10-15 people inside the restaurant at once. This restaurant has beautiful views and lots of outdoor seating. Inside they have a variety of seafood and regular food like salad and burgers to choose from. The prices are a little high but the food and drinks are good. The garlic bread was average and the corn was very buttery. The fried shrimp, the fish and the tostones were delicious. The calamari was average as well and wasn’t fried that long, I like mine very crispy. Also make sure you ask for all the condiments you want once you’re ordering because if not it’s hard to try to get back in line and ask for them.
This place is definitely a hidden gem to find, placed all the way at the end of the island. I have more pros than cons. Which is still pretty good. The seafood here is fried. There’s no boil, broiled or nor steamed cooking options for seafood. Plus lacks seasoning and they don’t provide seasoning dispensers/ individual packs. Lastly the outdoor seating has a cafeteria on the water feel. Otherwise my seafood entree was fresh, well done and presented nicely. They also have a section ordering for alcoholic drinks. This place is family friendly, has a fantastic view outdoors and has pretty affordable prices on seafood dishes. Definitely a destination place to visit. GO HERE!
I’ve been this year twice to Johnny’s Reef. We had fried shrimp with fries and homemade tartar sauce - delicious. The portions are very generous for the price and freshly made. They are using all the precautions necessary. The staff is friendly and they are serving the food very quick. Indoor seating was both times I visited full but they have a heated outdoor seating area were you can enjoy the beautiful view on rainy days. On hot days half of the outdoor seating area is in the sun and the other half in the shade. Wish all seats would be in the shade, especially on days 90F and above. They also have a parking lot, never had problems finding parking there. At the moment they only accept cash, which is a little bit inconvenient for me. If you don’t have any cash, don’t worry - there is an ATM. There is also a section were they serve alcoholic beverages - We had a piña coladas and they were great - tasty and strong! This place is family friendly. I highly recommend.
The seafood was fresh and nicely cooked. Service was fast and efficient. Parking was free and convenient (on the weekdays, I guess!). The ocean view of the outdoor sitting was magnificent. So what more can you ask for when the weather is nice and you want a nice casual outdoor meal?!
One of 2 restaurants that I enjoy visiting in City Island. I prefer coming here at night but sometimes it can get rowdy. Although they say do not feed the birds people refuse to listen. The aggressive birds flock to this area and I've seen them poop on people. Smh! I now only go during the day where it's more calm and you're serviced in a matter of minutes. Update: since the pandemic prices have gone up through the roof. Not very reasonable but since they are one of the most popular restaurants on the island they felt it was necessary I’m assuming to make up for the loss of revenue with Covid19. They’ve made huge upgrades. Outside dining now has a area (view photos) under a pavilion/gazebo set up. They have places clear dividers in all the food and drink stations as well as put hand sanitizer throughout establishment. One huge change I am glad to see installed was the handicap ramp. Huge points as it was not a requirement but still was installed.
Food was so Good.!!! Very fast line Tartar sauce is the best I have ever try.! The only bad thing is people who go there are smoking w..d EVERYWHERE.! We were seated outside with my little daughter and it gets me mad that she has to be smelling this when she doesn’t have too.!! WHY PEOPLE DOESNT GET THAT THIS IS A FAMILY RESTAURANT.! The parking full of people drinking and smoking I hope this changes because the restaurant is really good at a very nice location
My first time here and it def won’t be my last! I wasn’t too happy about the strawberry daiquiris but the henny coladas were good but it did need a little more slosh! The shrimp and fries were really good and the views were beautiful! I didn’t like the fact that it was cash only and there was only one atm. For only accepting cash there should be at least 3 atms to avoid long lines with frustrated hungry and thirsty people. Other than that I would def. like to come back again in the summer and have some more drinks and shrimp!
A trip to City Island wouldn't be complete without some seafood by the water, and Johnny's Reef didn't disappoint. True, it's a little hectic and the the lines can be long, but the wait isn't all that bad. It's all a part of the experience. We chose the fried shrimp and steamed squid in garlic sauce. Both were delicious.
When it comes to delicious fried seafood, this spot is easily one of the best places you can go. From the moment you walk in, the aroma alone lets you know you’re about to enjoy something special. The menu is full of fresh options, from golden fried shrimp to perfectly crisp fish, each seasoned with just the right blend of spices. Every bite delivers that satisfying crunch on the outside while staying tender and flavorful on the inside. What sets this place apart is not just the quality of the food but also the atmosphere. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick bite, bringing family along for a casual dinner, or meeting friends for a relaxed evening out, the vibe is always welcoming. The portions are generous, making it great value for both your appetite and your wallet. Pair your meal with their sides—like crispy fries, coleslaw, or hush puppies—and you’ve got the perfect combination for a hearty, comforting meal. Beyond the food, the service adds to the experience. The staff is attentive, friendly, and clearly takes pride in what they do. They make you feel right at home, which only enhances the overall dining experience. It’s the kind of place where you’ll want to return again and again, not just for the amazing seafood but also for the warm and inviting atmosphere. If you’re a fan of fried seafood—or even if you’re just looking to treat yourself to a flavorful and satisfying meal—you won’t regret checking this spot out. It’s truly one of the best places to go for good fried seafood, and it will quickly become one of your favorite go-to destinations whenever the craving hits.
Good seafood restaurant right by the waters. Be prepared to neighbor with the seagulls. They do have lines above that prevent the bigger birds from flying in, which is very much appreciated. The fried calamari was delicious and the little neck clams were fresh. Good cocktail sauce and linguine/clams. The ordering can be a little confusing for a first timer. They have different ordering booths for fried, steamed, drinks, sodas etc. whatever you see on the menu above, that’s likely what you can order in that area. Cash only!
To be honest, after reading up on the origins of this establishment I was expecting top of the line seafood. Don’t get me wrong the food was good. I definitely enjoyed the food but I was dissappointed with the quality. The total of food in the picture with pina colada and a jonny’s sea breeze came out to 76$. I found that to be a bit pricey for the quality of the food. There was a line to get inside to order which took about 15 minutes so wasn’t too bad. There is no social distancing here and people wear face masks for the most part. There were plenty of seats available but definitely on the cooler side in terms of temperature. I personally won’t be going back anytime soon but to try it just once I do recommend.
My friend and I ate here on a Saturday afternoon. The food prices have gone up considerably, no longer making this place a go to, to save $$$. The food tasted ok, but for about the same price, I'll go to a real restaurant and be served higher quality seafood. OVERALL: I cautiously recommend this restaurant.
Big Place, excelente to share with family and friends nice view, the Customer service need improve and becareful when serve the food can mix different kind of seafood just in case anybody has any alergy reaction. The Best Piña Colada and really cheap, nice bartender don't forget the tip. Lol..
We usually go to Seafood City as a large group, but my co-workers wanted to try somewhere different. Unlike Seafood City, you do get your food fast. The wait time isn't long especially if you get there early enough. The food however could be seasoned much better. I bought my own seasoning with me. I had to give my own flavor to the Steamed Shrimp, and Lobster Tails. The drinks were average at best. Definately not one of my favorite places in City Island.
Red Snaper fried was ok, and the lobsters tails. The shrimps not that great they tasted like refried, and they should serve in a bigger basket for the amount of food. And the kicker is 2 dollars for a cup with a little bit of ice, definitely thats a ripped off. I understand you have to charge, but 2 dollars is a fountain drink everywhere. 2 dollars for an Ice cup is a no no, Never seen it, and it was hard to digest. The people and atmosphere were good.
The food all taste like the same dry fried taste no dimension nor seasoning. My friends and I ordered everything on the menu and were not impressed. Tables are bit dirty. Drinks are okay. Other places on city island that are better. My biggest problem was raw things not served on ice. Lack of sides almost everything served with fries. I won’t be back. Don’t get the hype.
Lets just say I was reminiscing on the good ole days when Johnny's seafood was the best and quality was fresh. Came in with a table of 6 and the majority came for the lobster tails and red snapper. What a disappointment with the size of the lobster tails! They are so small and prices doubled !!! I get it...inflation and everything eventually goes up but quality of food has changed drastically! I substituted fries for vegetables...why were the vegetables not fresh but so soggy I wouldn't feed my dog that! Should be ashamed to serve those over cooked disgusting veggies! The line was out the door but it was going fast. Had my friend complain about shrimp tasting different and fries were not as fresh as before. Huge disappointment... I ll venture off to a better quality sea food in the area. I was loyal for over 35yrs. So sad!
We recently visited this outdoor fish and chips restaurant with our family, including four kids in fifth and sixth grades, my wife, and her mother. While the food was reasonably priced and had an average taste, the overall experience was marred by the environment. There were numerous people smoking cigarettes and marijuana not only in the parking lot but also at the dining tables. Despite the staff being aware, no action was taken to address it, which made the atmosphere quite unpleasant, and unsafe
I’ve been coming to this spot since I was a child. It was always one of my favorite places to come with family. Today I was so disappointed. The quality of the food went down so much. They fry their shrimp in batches to have ready to serve and it’s was room temperature. Also, I’m no fool. These shrimp weren’t fresh. They fried frozen shrimp from the supermarket. I know they didn’t take the time to remove the tails from each one. Their shrimp always come with the tail. Cheaper in quality but give you about 30 small (frozen) shrimp. :-/
