They maybe spicy and even though I cant take pepper this place keep reeling me back. The food is just so good........ dont worry that's what water is for!
Such delicious food! So well favoured and not heavy.
Great restaurant to get the bajan cooking like back home. Homey feeling and service was excellent would recommend and would visit again. 👍👌
The food is delicious!!!! There are a couple of seats but I always get my food to go!
Bought some fried chicken. Chicken was ok but the Black cake was very good. Go here for black cake hope they keep up the quality.
Barbados In Brooklyn 🥰 can’t get any better than this. For your favorites call ahead and reserve. I drove in from Long Island and missed out be a few minutes on some delicious fried bakes. But I was able to get me some conkies and pudding and sousse. Which I devoured before even reach my home 1.5 hours away. Fish cakes and baked good are sooooo good. I look forward to my trips to Brooklyn to get these treats from home.
My dad who is Bajan brought me here and the food was 😋 I had cou cou and snapper and it was savory and hit the spot. I will be returning
Ms. Browne was kind, polite and has a great personality. A winner in customer service and the key to any successful business especially food. Speaking of food:. The oxtails which came with rice & peas, fried plantain and mixed vegetables was flavorful, well prepared and plentiful. Fish cakes and fish patties were crispy and not doughy. Mauby is to die for. I will order 2 of them when I go back to collect my puddn'nsouse on Saturday which I already put in my order for with Ms. Browne. Met the handsome Mr. Culpepper who was hands on serving his customers. Drop in or call them.
I'm always going to support the Bajan massive. I got the flying fish sandwich and it was 'almost' like I was in Barbados. I will be back for my next sandwich and macaroni pie.
I've been coming here for years and I just love being recognized as a regular by Dave at least. The food is good and is the closest thing to quick home food
Best place to go to for authentic Bajan food. It's unlike any other food in the Caribbean! Nice and delicious bakery items too!
Great food. Needs to work on customer service. Even though service is slow it is still worth a visit. Best pudding and souse in Brooklyn
Vsiting New York always ends with delicious delights from Culpepper. Mauby, turnovers, cassava pone, conkies ,fishcakes and I must get the souse for my husband. It takes me back to Barbados.
Food is great, especially their fish cakes, very, very delicious. If you want a large amount you must put order in advance.
If you want pudding and souse you better go here on a Saturday morning. Best pudding and souse you will ever have. The current rolls to die.
Always great food paired with some good Bajan service, if you know what I mean. Worth the wait.
Wonderful fish cakes. Try a “bread and two” with pepper sauce, superb flavor and unbeatable price.
Sweetest people! Delicious treats & kind service. I will definitely be back. Thank you for a fantastic experience, Ms. L ❤
Everything is excellent here, but the fish cakes are a masterpiece. Try them and tell me they aren't seasoned perfectly!!
Fish cakes perfect. Best peanut punch ever!!! Cheese cutter qnd strawberry puffs amazing
If I could give it 10 starts I would Had the oxtail and she gave me some delicious fish cakes Can't wait to come back on Saturday to try the pudding and souse with some Mac pie on the side cause why not
This was my first time going there. I did take out. Most of my favorite food choices were sold out. I learned from the staff it's best to call in your order for pickup early when the open up at 8am. The food was great. I will definitely be calling in my future orders ahead of time.
First time ordering food from this restaurant. I ordered the curry chicken with rice and peas and stewed okra. The chicken was very tasty and well seasoned. My sister said the chicken, " fell off the bones". I liked the type of curry seasoning that was used as all curry is not the same, or at least, don't taste the same. I usually order from another Carribean restaurant when I'm in Brooklyn but I will check out this establishment again when I return to New York. Plan to try other items on the menu!
My favorite and probably only Bajan restaurant I know that sells souse! So good and the fish cakes are amazing. I looked forward to ordering here, every Saturday before I moved.
I can rely on getting a good meal here. Plus I support my Bajan culture. Fish cakes and roti are my go-to but just about everything else here is delicious.
Went there with my Aunt who is bajain like me and this place reminds me of back home with a variety of things to choose from to eat and drink.
As a bajan, when I'm in New York, especially on a Saturday i have to go to Culpeppers. I have to have their pudding and souse, my family loves the cornmeal and breadfruit coucou, the pigtails, the turnovers, the jam puffs...i could go on. Point is the food is excellent, staff is friendly and efficient. The only thing I wish is that there the option to sit-down and dine in.
Best Bajan Food in NYC! Consistently quality food for decades because it is a tight-knit-Family restaurant that takes real pride in its authentic and delicious cuisine. I’ve eaten here easily 100 times and NEVER been the least bit disappointed!
The curry goat and oxtail here are to die for. The baked goods are great. But I urge you to get some cou cou and fish cakes.
We placed an order with Ms. Loo, and when we got there, she took great care of us! Thank you! I was shocked that the fish cake price increased from $0.50 to $0.80... inflation at its finest.
The fish cakes were amazing and inexpensive. Reminds me of Haitian marinade. The fish cake was fried but not too hard, just spicy enough, well seasoned, not overpowering and not greasy at all most importantly. It's a great quick snack which was what I needed after a long trek home. I will be trying thier other meals soon! Its not quite like an American fish cake/crab cake/croquette. This is almost like a savory donut hole if that makes sense. Enjoy.
Due to mishap with order. The manger and staff went above and beyond to make it right. Showed the true spirit of what real customer service looks like.
This place is probably been open 15 years and I've only lived here for 5 and I admonish every day I have not gone in to get food here
This is favourite place when I want my Bajan Delicacies, especially the cou- cou and the souse
I had the coucou and red herring yesterday and it was so delicious. Haven't had this delicacy in years. The staff is amazing and the prices are great, would highly recommend.
Food was delish! Ordered oxtails, mac, and rice& peas. Sorrell was tasty and took a peanut punch to go!
The food is awesome. Great Bajan spot, pudding, and souse is the best.
Culpeppers is a restaurant where you can get all or most of the products you need from Barbados the food there is one of the best.i don't have to wait too long, but If i have too I know that it's worth it. Thank you Culpeppers
Food is delicious right seasoning But small the amount they put into the container has been reduced Another thing is: there is so many people behind the counter but yet still it takes a long time in purchasing your food
Souse on Saturdays is my go to along with some fish cakes. I highly recommend their hot pepper sauce which is very spicy and flavorful! Sorrel is good also.
Placed an catering order for pick up which was easy. However pick up was not as I called ahead of time to confirm and still had to wait. Worth the wait time, food is good!!!
Please don't take the 4-out-of-5 rating as a knock on this place. The food is marvelous and priced appropriately. To me "5" is perfection and no restaurant can reach that. If you get a chance, try the cornmeal Cou Cou with steamed Flying Fish. Yum!
The food is great The bread and pastry great Love the coo-coo I am enjoying it every weekend. It's like going to a family members house to pick up food. Thanks Culpeppers
You can find Bajan dishes here like pudding and souse, cuckoo, fish cakes and more. Depending on how much people come to order you may have a bit of a wait but good food takes time. Baked goods are made fresh and tasty like turnovers (a lightly sweet bread with coconut rolled inside), sweet bread, buns and more. If you have an appetite, and some time to enjoy your food you should stop by.
This is my go to place in Crown Heights for caribbean food. I love their okra and fried sweet plantains. Their oxtails are delicious but could be made more tender. I love oxtails that melt in your mouth. Their king fish is hit or miss because some days it is perfect but other days it chews hard and salty. Overall, I enjoy their food.
I finally found a good Bajan restaurant to satisfy my craving. Fish cakes were hot and fresh, they tasted just like the way I had them in Barbados. Their macaroni pie was good too, I just wish it was a little bigger inside to dine in. It's definitely worth the train ride from New Jersey!
Please remember when ordering that this is Bajan cuisine and not Jamaican. If you are not Bajan and use to eating Jamaican oxtails then it will shock your taste buds. It’s good, however you just need to be fully aware of the type of Carribean food you are ordering in order to truly appreciate it.
EVERYTHING IS GOOD!! From the cou-cou (which I didn't start eating until approximately 2 yrs ago; BTW I'm an American with bajan parents) 2 the stew beef on down. ..the only thing I don't eat is the pudding & souse but as far as everything else, including their pone & lead pipes are good! If you're in the area, stop by!
I was craving some Bajan food and stopped by to satisfy my hunger. The lady serving me was less then friendly, almost a attitude. I asked for baked chicken.."we don't have that"..in a impatient manner.I then asked for macaroni Pie and veggies. Soooo that came to 7$ and some change .I asked why and was informed 4$ for the pie and 3 for the 3 scoops of cabbage.Call me cheap but I can get a full meal for 3$ and felt overcharged. She dropped/threw my change in my hand and I left.I haven't been back since..that left a bad taste in my mouth.Maybe I shouldn't question the prices..IDK.
I've been wanting to try Culpeppers for 10 years but due to this heatwave this was a perfect opportunity with Seamless. I will say Culpeppers is expensive but worth it. It's very tasty not too spicy. Pros: Their chicken rotis are so good. Their rotis are huge Sweet plantains are very sweet Jerk chicken is delicious with split peas rice :) Cons: Even though we ordered a jerk chicken dinner we didn't receive half of our macaroni pie We also didn't receive a slice of pound cake. We were bummed. All in all it was good experience for our first time... we will have it again :)
I visit here a couple of times and each time I go to the lady seems to have an attitude I don't know why the food is okay I wouldn't say it's all authentication food but it's good if the young lady the light skin one with the long fake eyelashes would just stop having an attitude it will make the visit better. But I do like to come here and get my lead pipes and my fish cakes
I bought brown stew chicken which was tasty and well seasoned. The tie leaf was also very tasty. However, don't expect a smile from anyone working there. They always look stressed. The "hello" is on you. They take your order, fill it, take your money and give you your change. No smile. No thank you. No have a good day. Good food though. Just don't expect to get that welcoming feeling there.
#TGTG -This appeared on my app, so I couldn't tell if it was a restaurant or a bodega, however I digress. I got a healthy serving of rice, meat and fried dough balls, which were fantastic. While the rice were cooked properly, as a South Asian, i prefer basmati rice. Overall I felt satiated from the meal and the staff was courteous and gave me the order in no time :)
Est. 1998 Layout/atmosphere *Bajan (Barbados) half bakery/half luncheonette; electronic kiosk for ordering by door; one table; three stools Service *Solid Food/drink *Goat Roti (buss up shut paratha roti) - good; not too spicy *King Fish Cutter (lettuce, tomato) - good; roll was doughy, little sweet (fell apart towards the end); lettuce was Romaine; fish tender *Macaroni pie - solid; simple
Staff needs to be more structured when it comes to taken and filling orders. This would save time, prevent over crowing,as well as customer lost
The Sunday chicken soup used to be to die for. New recipe renders it only ok. Slow service, ok food, but always a pretty steady crowd. Must be doing something right!
Good old fashioned 🇧🇧 food and pastries..pudding & souse, sweet bread, jam puffs, conkies..etc. The ordering process is however very unorganized, resulting in very long wait times and poor customer service.
.The souse was on point! Delicious just like I remembered it to be,Thank you🙂The cou cou however, was like a cake no flavour. Dry n hard. There was no okras in it that keeps it wet and slippery. All of them were outside in the gravy. Even I asked for extra gravy it didn't make no difference. I am hoping this was just an off weekend and not the "new normal" for my favourite dish. I will try again. Customer service and food is great 👍 it's always hot if you don't mind the wait.
Love, love, love their fish cakes which are good for party trays. Some of their baked goods are great as well. Tried an oxtail dinner once and was not impressed on the skimpy portion, so never again.
Customer services leaves a lot to be desired (slow service, not particularly friendly people behind the counters), but the food is really good. I am particularly fond of the roti but hate having to wait forever for them to prepare it, which is why despite living so close, I choose not to return often.
The food is okay, I've only had Rotti from there. My last vist was just that my last. The attitude of the people who work there is horrible. I can say the woman with the glasses is usually nice but the one with the fake eyelashes does not need to work with the public. I don't feel I should spend my money in a place where I'm not treated well.
The workers can be kind of rude but there are at least two people who I have had a good experience with. The food is good, I think it also depends on the time of day that you go. The atmosphere is kind of small for the amount of people that come in but it is what it is, you order wait for your food and go.
The place was clean and the food was decent. The woman's attitude was unnecessarily rude. For that alone, I won't be coming back.
They are totally overwhelmed. You call ahead on the weekend to place an order and when you get there you still have to wait outside FOREVER and when you get your food it's usually wrong. They are confused and EXTREMELY DISORGANIZED
The wait is ridiculously long, despite pre ordering. Your pre order number is given to 3,_4 individuals with litte results at shortening your wait time. A better system should be put in place.
Went there some years ago and placed my order. I waited and I noticed people who came in after me placing their orders were receiving them before I had received my own. I asked again for my order, they said they'd make it. More people came in after me and left before me. What I'd learned watching them is this: my order was small. In other words it didn't bring in enough money so they were taking larger orders that did, while they made me wait. That was my second and last time ever in that store in nearly thirty years living here.
I have been going to Culpeppers for years and the food has always been good.(Not Any More). I wonder if they changed the cook because the food was very greasy, coocoo, rice etc and the oxtail had absolutely no flavor tasted like when you soak meat in salt water and add a little black pepper..it was horrible.. Maybe they are no longer hungry for the money..
The food is great but the service is subpar. I doubt I will be going back. Rudy needs to be taught how to treat the customers. Winston needs to institute a system where the way Culpepper functions remains consistent in his presence and absence. To many times I would stay in line and watch Rudy's acquaintances order over my head because they have absolutely no respect who have been waiting. This has happened more than once and I've pretty much had it with that place.
Ordered food for my mother's 88th Birthday which is a big deal through Seamless and the order was missing items and other things included that I didn't order. When I called Culpeppers the lady said they were out of the ginger beer and other things I ordered. I asked COULDN'T YOU ALL CALL AND ASK WHAT WOULD WE LIKE IT REPLACED WITH ??? I was extremely VEX that after I PAID $88+ ON FOOD DURING THIS AGE OF THE PANDEMIC AND I DON'T EVEN GET THE COURTESY OF A CALL ! ! ! She said to contact Seemless and I can get a refund but IT IS THE PRINCIPLE OF IT ! I told her this was going to give them a bad review from me :-( BTW the food LUKE WARM and tasted ok
I ordered the stew chicken and couldn't believe what I got. It was not chicken parts but ground up pieces. There was so much bone pieces in it I might as well have been eating fish. It is a good thing I was not sharing this meal with a child. This is a choke hazard. They added cubes of potatoes so, you got even less meat. The sauce was a bit salty. The coconut drop was dry and tasteless. There were small shreds of coconut. They probably the leftovers to make this.
The food at this place has s extremely good but the service is not the best there was this lady there that had a crazy amount of attitude for no reason at all.And the place is extremely hot and needs air conditioner especially when the weather is 86 degrees. I would recommend getting better service
My girlfriend is Bajan and all she spoke about this spot for the last 5 years and desperately wanted me to try it. Of course, I was excited LOL but all for nothing. It was decently flavored but I never had a roti with various sized bones in it. My girlfriend even said she doesn’t recall the roti’s having bones in them. It really wasn’t enjoyable struggling for my life trying not to choke on bones. Eventually I just threw it out. Top of my mouth all scraped up. Not sure if this is a normal thing for them or if they’re just too lazy to remove the bones. Either way, I’m just never eating here again..ever. Atmosphere was cool and the People were kind so it’s no complaints about the restaurant itself but It could be the simplest things that just turns you off …and picking bones out of my food for 45 minutes really kind of pissed me off.
This place regularly gets my orders wrong. Just an hour ago delivery person literally left my food outside bc they didn't want to go upstairs. So I also got my food stolen.
I WAS CRAVING COCONUT TURNOVERS, SO I DECIDED TO ORDER SOME. I FIGURED EVERYTHING WOULD BE FRESH SEEING THAT IT WAS A SATURDAY. THE TURNOVERS WERE AT LEAST 3 DAYS OLD. NOW WHY WOULD YOU SELL STALE ITEMS. THE CURRANT SLICE WAS EXTRA SWEET AND FULL OF ESSENCE. THE HAM CUTTER HAD 1 SLICE OF HAM, 1 SLICE TOMATO AND 1 WILTED PIECE OF LETTUCE. NOTHING WAS SALVAGEABLE. CULPEPPERS USED TO BE GOOD BUT NO MORE. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND GO TO ALLANS BAKERY A BLOCK AWAY OR SVG BAKERY A COUPLE BLOCKS AWAY. WORST $47 I HAVE EVER SPENT. NEVER AGAIN.
HORRIBLE SERVICE! If you want to wait all day for your order, only to be told you never placed it, order here. There's better Caribbean food in BK and with MUCH BETTER SERVICE
Food was very disgusting i would never ever buy this again, macaroni was sour and oxtail was tasteless and was not Rich and sweet if. This is not food to be 20$+ very disappointed
Went here expecting authentic bajan food but it was so disappointing… I think they gave me spoiled rice, it was mushy and smelled spoiled after a 30 minute drive. I asked for ribs and the lady gave me dried out beef ribs and used the sauce to cover it up. I bought salt bread outta good faith- it might as well be rock cake cause the bread was dry and stale. There were flies on the pastries on display I shoulda took that as a warning. -Red flag #1 smh just disappointed was not worth the trip
Very Salty, cod fish taste as if it was thrown directly out of package with salt and all. Unwashed and no salt boiled off, my mouth is on fire from the excessive salt and my blood pressure is high. same with the fish cakes. and I'm not going to mention the three oxtails that was also not cleaned. Never Again.
Worst Bajan restaurant in Brooklyn. I waited for 1 hour for my food, no explanation. The lady with fake eyelashes horrible, nasty attitude. They are so slow in there, they need to hire new professional people. They are unprofessional there. Never again will I eat there. Horrible.
This review is related to a seamless order. I ordered two entrees and an appetizer from Culpeppers. This was my first time ordering from this restaurant. There was also a $3.99 delivery charge plus a required $4.07 "tip' Although the food came on time, only one entree was in the bag. I immediately called the restaurant and was spoke to the woman who answered the phone. Not only was she rude and her tone was off, she told me that they were closing, didn't have my second entree and because the store was busy, she was unable to call and let me know before the delivery was made. As I was expressing my frustration, I was told that I needed to contact Seamless for a refund and was hung up on. This place was totally unprofessional. I have used seamless on multiple occasions and when a restaurant does not have the items ordered online, they call and ask for substitutions. Culpeppers did not do this and was rude in their communication. I will never order from them again, or recommend them to anyone.
The foods I had to throw in the Garbage I waste $70.00 The coconut bread had too much baking soda and salt and it was over power with vanilla essence. The cou cou did need more cooking in okra slime, the gravy were okras and onions that had no taste. The king fish were ok. The fish cakes had too much pepper and no onions or scallion. The souse the pig feet had hair and the souse did need lime juice. The turnovers were hard and dry. This is my first and last time I would buy food at culpepper. Restaurant. You all make good cooks look Bad As a bajan I know how our culture foods are made and I know the taste. You all make our culture cooks look Bad
First of all I came to get a chicken soup because I was in the area and haven't had it in a long time. The lightskin lady at the front had an HERRENDOUS attitude like if you aren't going to treat your customers nicely why are you even working there? The soup? Bare water and the lady had the nerve to give me 1 dumping and 1 little piece of chicken. never going back!
My name is Kathie and I live in Mt. Vernon in Westchester County. My parents are Bajan through and through so I’ve grown up with Bajan cuisine. The service here is horrendous. The servers always look as though they would rather be somewhere else. As a customer I feel rushed and paused at the same time. The coucou was SWIMMING in liquid. Ya Chile what kinda foolishness is dis? Any way I spent 47.00 and I regret it. I have been here tree times in the last year and each time I hope for the best. I am done. Unna should be shame! #fakebajans😩
Unfortunately my review is based solely on service, and because the customer service was poor I didn’t purchase anything at the restaurant. Maybe that’s my lost but that’s also theirs as a business because the person at the counter should be welcoming, have a smile on their face, and interact with the customers not look like they hated being there. The person that came out the back looked way more welcoming. That lady at the counter set the entire tone for the atmosphere. The customer service isn’t warm, nor inviting. I accompanied someone and they made purchases only because they came from out of state to do so, I changed my mind after entering the store and getting the vibes after seeing the lady at the counter. I’m hoping she was having a bad day and this isn’t a usual thing because I heard the food is really good and this won’t be good for business.
I can't tell you how nasty my food was. Order delivery of curry goat roti, it smelled wrong (not gamey but rank) and there were crunchy bits in it. I couldn't even be bothered to deal with complaining to them directly because I ordered via GrubHub. I'm so disgusted. Would not recommend.
Ordered the stew pork, she literally put only the fat and bone in the container. It's my fault for not looking at what she was dishing out. What server doesn't give you a mixture?
Bought pudding and sous today and the pudding was fried and very, very greasy and, the sous was bones and pieces of gristle with a few pieces of cut up parsley and I guess cucumber. It was so tasteless that I cannot tell exactly what it was. This was the WORST pudding and sous that I ever had.
