Opinions de Defonte's Sandwich Shop Brooklyn
That was an excellent fried eggplant, peppers and provolone sandwich on a fresh Italian seeded roll. You bite into it and the experience is pure delight! The eggplant, crispy, the peppers, sweet, the provolone, medium sharp, the bread, seeded and soft. Washed it down with some coffee soda...it was very amoré! This is a great sandwich that's well worth the journey to Red Hook, Brooklyn especially for those discerning sandwich enthusiasts looking for a proper Italian hoagie! 🇮🇹❤️😋
Defonte’s Sandwich Shop is a slice of old-school Brooklyn soul. The moment you walk in, you’re wrapped in a warm, smoky aroma—not harsh, just comforting. It’s easily the most community-centered spot I’ve been to: staff fist-bumping regulars, checking in on their families, and blessing America out loud. Many say it’s the best sandwich shop in NYC, and I get it. I tried the Nicky’s Special—a cold-cut classic stacked with layers—and it truly hit the spot, especially on a hot summer day. The fried eggplant was flavorful though a bit oily, and the potato & egg was humble, slightly under-seasoned, but still satisfying. Come for the food, stay for the neighborhood vibe. This place isn’t just a deli—it’s a Brooklyn institution.
Decided to take a 35min walk from Brooklyn Heights and it was definitely worth it. Ordered the large Nicky Special and Roast Beef (with mozzarella and eggplant). Both were awesome and huge. The Nicky had a great amount of meat and topped with a bunch of fresh veggies, the Roast Beef had only 3 ingredients which resulted in an outstanding sandwich! Thanks to the friendly staff Defonte's, great job.
Great food with good portions ans a friendly staff. We had no idea the small sandwiches were so big. I had a chicken cutlet sandwich with roasted peppers lettuce tomato mayo. My wife got the Italian and she said it was grateful, my son loved the meatball sub and my daughter enjoyed the Buffalo chicken cutlet. There were so many options to choose from be sure to look ahead or plan to be overwhelmed by the options. We went during a time where it wasn't busy so we were able to get some seats at the picnic tables outside. Next time I want to try the Steak pizzaiola since it looked really good.
Came right before closing - the staff were top notch. Very helpful. The place is cute. No sitting only standing space. I don’t remember where I was recommend but got there 30 min before closing and they were very nice. I wanted a hot roast for me and to go - but they only have enough for one - I would have eaten this for days if I got more tho. I’ll have to come back. Something about the meat the cheese that is just amazing. The hot roast is one of my top sandwich in the city at the moment However I also got an Italian and it was perfect. I kinda wanna try everything here so I will be back! Cash only thankfully for the atm this wasn’t a problem. The small is huge. But I wonder if they hooked me up cus that’s all that was left. Still would get a large and eat later if I go back
When a place has been around for so long its for a good reason. Very friendly service on top of delicious food. I got the golden boy sandwhich which is: chicken cutlets with vodka sauce and prosciutto topped with melted mozzarella. This has been one of my favorite sandwhiches so far, looking forward to returning and trying others.
Nice day in Brooklyn. Went to Japan Village to walk around. Wasn't in the mood for Japanese food. IKEA was a planned destination but I didn't feel like swedish meatballs. Defontes!!!! I hadn't been there in a while. It was near lunch time so I want sure about the crowds. Usually it's packed on a Saturday lunch hour. Not today! Maybe people were out and about. Looked the wall of sandwich choices. Then it slapped me in the face. Chenzo 13 special. Prosciutto, sopressata, provolone, hot salad, broccoli rabe. I got the large. Went to my car and devoured 1/2 as soon as I cleared my car door. I saved the other 1/2 for dinner or tomorrow's lunch. It was awesome. But I won't have it again for a couple of months as I like to cycle thru the menu. 😋
The Red Hook Special has a great balance of meat and vegetables. As a result the lettuce and tomato work really well with the chicken cutlet and the turkey. That's two crunchy and two soft textures, well done. They don't put too much mayo either. The seeded bread is crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. A "1/2 sandwich" can feed two and is often cut in half for that reason. Lovely spot, highly recommend, $20 for that sandwich is the right price and is an NYC steal. Remember, cash only!!!!
DeFontes is one of those Brooklyn institutions that instantly reminds you why some places never need a refresh. I went straight for the Signature Hot Roast Beef and, in a moment of well justified indulgence, added the Steak Pizzaiola. Zero regrets. These sandwiches are unapologetically stuffed. Meat, cheese, sauce, seasoning, all layered with confidence and generosity that feels almost defiant in today’s portion-controlled world. And the bread matters here. It’s fresh, warm, and crisp in all the right places, sturdy enough to carry the weight of the fillings without stealing the spotlight. It’s the perfect vehicle for the kind of sandwich that requires both hands and lots of napkins. Ordering at the counter may look intimidating at first, like there’s a secret rhythm you’re supposed to know and have rehearsed. Don’t stress it. The service is quick, efficient, and genuinely friendly. The staff are happy to guide you through it, even if it’s your first time staring at the menu trying to decide how hungry you actually are. Just keep in mind that there’s no seating beyond a stand-up counter along the wall, so plan accordingly. This is very much a grab-and-go or eat-it-immediately experience. DeFontes isn’t chasing trends. It doesn’t have to. This is classic, expertly executed deli cooking that delivers exactly what you want and then some.
The food is outstanding!! If you get over to Brooklyn, you must give it a try. They do have one counter by the door to stand at, If you wanna eat there. I decided to take my sandwich over to the waterway and sit in my car and enjoy the view.
The food and staff are great!!! Love their Shrimp Parm sub!!! Defontes isn’t really a dine-in spot. They’ve got one bench table outside that fits about four people, but once it gets cold, that’s not really an option. Best move is to order and take it home — or eat in the car. Either way, it’s worth it — the food is so good! 😋🔥
I love coming to Defonte's (in Red Hook) here. As one of the best sandwich shops in all of NYC. You feel at home walking in. Today I got the Valentino Special with Eggplant, Roasted Red Peppers and Provolone, with added Jalapenos + (Lettuce/tomato/onion) 1/3 sandwich with pickle, hot chips and a soda. It is cash only. So plan accordingly but worth the trip down to red hook for lunch every time. Everything tasted just as good as the first time. They have so many different options and combinations for all different sandwich eaters and diets. Definitely will be back again and again.

Blows away anything remotely similar in Los Angeles. Go here if you don't want to wait in line at Red Hook Tavern, this is probably better overall anyway.

Went out on a limb to try a new place. And I was certainly right to be adventurous it was delicious. The service was great and so was the food highly recommend
Finally tried this sandwich shop and ordered the Valentino Special. Really good flavor and definitely big enough for two people. That said, halfway through I started to lose interest—it’s a lot of food in one sitting. If I lived in the neighborhood, I’d definitely come back to try some of the other sandwiches.
I’ve been coming to Defonte’s for almost twenty years. I’ve tried a lot of their sandwiches, but the Nicky Special is still the one I go back to the most. Ham, provolone, salami, ham capicola, fried eggplant, hot salad, mushrooms, lettuce and tomato — everything fits together nicely and it’s always satisfying. It’s a solid sandwich shop. Nothing fancy, just dependable and good. The reason it’s not five stars for me is simply that I’ve had a few sandwiches elsewhere that impressed me a bit more, but Defonte’s is still a place I keep returning to. If you’re not sure what to order, go with the Nicky Special. It’s been my favorite here for a long time.
Got beef sandwich pretty good also the eggplant I think ivarones is better but Defonte's is good

Got the special roast beef sandwich. The quality of the beef and cheese was very good, but I was honestly disappointed otherwise. It was cold and the bread was soggy. The flavors felt bland too. Could really use some vinegar or mustard at the least for being a special. I honestly felt sad because of the price I paid for it. Still, it was only one sandwich, their others might be better balanced.
Sandwich are great but this place needs 3 dollar signs now. They rose their prices way too much. Each sandwich now is 20 dollars or more. Come on guys this is Brooklyn not Manhattan.
