Roasted in Brooklyn- fresh, delicious and gives a huge boost to your day. The espresso here is on a completely different level than what you would normally see at larger chains. Make sure to put your seatbelt on before taking your first sip.
Lovely spot - we stopped briefly for a coffee, chai latte, and almond croissant. We sat briefly then took our drinks to go. Not a large space, so I wouldn’t bring my laptop to stay and work for longer periods.
Perfect Iced Latte! It is a small place, part of Grand Central & entrance on the street, too. If you are looking for a big interaction and conversation, probably not the place. But if you want a delicious pick-me-up that isn't Starbucks (they are everywhere!), then try Cafe Grumpy!
Cafe Grumpy does great coffee the way we Australians like it, which is really the Italian style that established itself in the inner city cafes of Melbourne generations ago. Starbucks never flourished here the way it did in the USA. Starbucks began to invade Melbourne some years ago believing that the coffee nazis would embrace their style, but they lost and had to shut down half their stores. We like the coffee to be made from roasted ground beans expressed under pressure from a big espresso machine. Then steam and froth the milk. This is what you will get at Cafe Grumpy and they also have a range of milk too. It's a life saver in New York.
Really lovely baked goods - the chocolate chip cookies and scones are delightful. Excellent coffee. Good service. Prices are what can be expected in midtown Manhattan
Four stars for a tasty, strong, more-than-just-foamy-milk cappuccino, and one more star for serving it in a ceramic cup and saucer. Add in nice clerks, glasses and water on the counter, no crowd on Saturday afternoon, and a soundtrack curated by a knowledgeable rock fan and you've got a new regular customer.
The Grumpy chain has probably the best coffee in NYC. Highly recommended. Their scone was delicious as well.
I had a great experience at the Grand Central location last week. I dropped in on a crazy hot afternoon for an ice latte. The Barista was so into it, friendly and my drink was GOOD. I went home and kept thinking about how delicious it was, ended up buying a pound of Grumpy coffee at Whole Foods (I live in CT) and was also impressed. Thank you for a highlight to my city day.
Great coffee beans. Heartbreaker is my personal favorite. They are always fresh and they have a nice selection. The baristas are very talented, they always do designs on your drink
Great coffee and energetic staff haha. Despite the name of the cafe, the baristas shared some fun energy with enthusiastic hellos as I entered lol. Ordered a flat white and it was really good, so definitely an A+ on the coffee. I wouldn’t plan to sit down and relax there, not that type of atmosphere, but perfect for a grab and go. I’ll for stop by again if I’m in the area.
Amazing drip coffee! First time trying Grumpy's. Stopped by after 6pm to get an iced coffee, and not only was it freshly made, it was the best drip coffee I have ever tried -- great deep flavor but not bitter (this was with milk and simple syrup added). Wonderful customer service, the barista who made the drink was very pleasant and friendly. The store itself is very clean (so important for a location in a train station). I highly recommend this location. If you're trying to locate it, the easiest way is from Lexington Ave (its the first store on the right in the Lexington Passage, aka the hallway just south of the Grand Central Market).
Simple, cramped, fast paced coffee shop. I got an iced cortado with oat milk. Highly recommended. The espresso was very different than what I'm used too. It was a little bright and extremely mild. I encourage anyone in the area to stop by, especially if you're staying in the Grand Hyatt.
I find the name and logo of this spot to be both fitting and hilarious 😂 😃, as far as the spicy iced mocha itself, thankfully it didn't burn my mouth but the drink is very rich in flavor. Worth all 7 dollars and change I shelled out for it.
They really know their coffee and do fabulous espresso drinks. This place is the highlight of every Metro North journey I take. Great people, tasty pastries, and the best coffee you’ll get in and around GCT.
What can I say? Cool staff, delicious coffee, and probably the best name for a cafe ever - definitely a must visit, whether you live in New York or the North Pole!
Great place for coffee. Always go here when in NYC, rich tasting and satisfying, yeh it’s just under $5 for latte etc but you get what you pay for! Can get busy at certain times but service is always friendly. Would’ve loved to have bought a mug to take home but $12 a mug is a bit steep tbh!
Don't let the name fool you. You won't be grumpy after you come here. Coffee is strong, baristas are friendly and the music is great. A good boost to your morning routine. A fan of orange merchandise and we have a couple of those in our office.
I love this place! It is a bit small and gets very busy but the coffee is well worth it! I like to stop whenever I'm nearby and grab something. They even have yummy seasonal drinks to mix things up.
Best coffee in NYC. Coming from a South American. Loved it and it was super quiet as well (might not always be the case idk)
I had a Tahitian Vanilla Latte from Grand Central and a Peppermint Mocha from the Nomad location. I enjoyed my drinks each time I went in and meant to return one more time before leaving the state (for my birthday drink $5 coupon), but forgot to. I definitely recall the staff being friendly the first time I went in and pretty sure they were the second time too. The place fills up fast, so if you don't see a line jump in on that opportunity. It was one of my favorite NYC coffee places.
The medium roast espresso served at s extraordinary. Service was also knowledgeable and kind. This is a destination coffee spot for me now.
I really like this location in Grand Central Terminal because it's a great place to grab a coffee and sit while waiting for a train. I knew I would be traveling Metro-North and have a bit of a wait, since I tend to be early, so was excited to know that I would have my morning coffee, latte actually, at this Cafe Grumpy. They have a nice bank of stools along a large, floor to ceiling window looking out at the busy corridor, great for people watching! Simply put, this place has a cool, relaxed vibe that is perfect for taking a break from my travels. And of course, as always, the latte was great too!
Priced high but excellent in nearly every way. The quality has been top notch at every visit. The only negative is the space, which is small, but I'll take it over the chain coffee that was there previously.
I am from the Wa state and am VERY picky about coffee. People in the PNW do not mess around when it comes to coffee or espresso. The roast they use is fantastic. It’s not bitter or too rich. And the home made flavorings are amazing. I highly recommend coming and trying their coffee.
100% the best coffee in and around grand central. The manager really cares about the process and every latte is on point
Good services.Hot chocolate is very nice!
If you're in the area around Grand Central and are looking for a coffee fix this is THE place to go. The coffee is excellent, the staff are so pleasant, and they have a wide selection of milks including skimmed, soy and almond. I was feeling festive and recently tried the cookie butter latte which was beyond delicious, but the regular coffee is just as good. It's a pretty small shop, so probably best to be getting it to go.
An amazing staff who will make you're experience better, if you are near to grand central you must go there for a latte, an americano, or a capuchino. You can drink special coffee too, in a Chemex, buy good.coffee, and also you can get water to your bottle, without buying a new one, even they will give you ice. The coffe is from Ethiopia, Honduras and Guatemala. Excellent coffe.
I saw The NY Times video on this place and popped in during the morning rush. Everyone was friendly. I didn’t wait long for my honey oat latte and it tasted delicious. Great vibe, love the decor and the name!
Cute coffee shop off of Grand Central, I popped in needing a coffee before my train and turns out it was the best coffee I’ve had while travelling around the USA. Lovely service and great spot if you’re needing a good flat white in the city!
Stopped by Cafe Grumpy Grand Central offer a long week at the US Open, in need of some caffeine. The nice man working here offered good recommendations, since I couldn’t decide what I wanted. The coffee was delicious. Service quick yet friendly and upbeat. When I’m back in town for tennis next year, I’ll make this place my usual coffee spot. Thank you!
I recently stopped by Cafe Grumpy on my way to Grand Central, and I had such a great experience. The service was super quick and friendly, and I loved that they support local artists. Plus, when you buy a mug, a portion of the proceeds goes to help animals, which is amazing. The lavender oat milk latte was absolutely delicious—I’m already looking forward to my next visit!
Sasha made a cappuccino with a medium blend of Colombian and Ethiopian coffee beans. This was a fine cup of coffee and far superior than the one I had yesterday at Gregory’s Coffee. I sat here savoring each sip slowly. Having coffee outside is a treat for me and Cafe Grumpy always delivers nicely. Good service and sometimes a delectable baked item.
I know a lot of folks have their go-to's from major brands (S-bucks, ahem, ahem), but this is just down the Lexington Passageway in Grand Central and I say... Come here! This is what good, real coffee is supposed to taste like! I'm talking if you think you don't like unsweetened coffee, try again and get the flat white. I have to agree with the reviews (which prompted my visit today) - they know how to make it exactly right! The velvety texture, the balanced taste. The coffee itself: notes of dark chocolate, nutty, smooth goodness. Perfection. It's a small shop but there are some seats available inside. Despite its size, they move quickly and effectively which I appreciate given the challenges of being in a busy area with limited space (and at the time of my visiting, only 3 staff members!) Thanks for the treat and the care. It's important to patronize locations where staff takes pride in their skills and hospitality. People get burned out and busy, so I recognize and appreciate the friendliness from the staff (and customers seemed to be nice, too! I just wish more people considered these things when going to service locations - let's all try to be better humans, eh?) Cheers.
Delicious cappuccino!!!! Very clean place. Great selection of coffees and pastries. They have organic teas. Small place but cozy. You can sit and watch people walking in and out of Grand Central terminal. Two entrances. One on lexington Ave with steps. Other just inside terminal entrance, no steps and wide enough for wheel chair.
Chilly winter morning here in Midtown Manhattan. First time trying Cafe Grumpy in the Grand Central Terminal. Aromatic coffee blend smells to die for with super friendly service. I couldn’t decide between the vegan banana walnut muffin or the sugar plum danish… so I had both 🤣 Hey… it’s the holidays. We can start counting calories in January. Keep being amazing out there!!
If you're passing through Grand Central and you need a cup of joe, this is my favorite option. The coffee is always solid. It's a tiny space with a few counter seats up against the glass, so it's not built for lingering. There is a Jacques Torres across the way so you can pick up a delicious chocolate chip cookie there to have with your coffee!
If you like a solid cup of coffee, go here. Solid: strong but not overly toasted, average price, amenable service. Their mugs for sale are the classic Grumpy image. You know, a millenium coffee bar.
This is a relatively small location inside Grand Central. The coffee quality here is excellent. I recently went a couple of times and got cold brew and there were some minor issues, hence the four stars instead of five. First off, they only sell medium size. I want a large coffee in the morning to start my day. It is a big downside that I can only get a medium iced coffee if I come here, and prevents me from coming more often. Second, they do not put the proper amount of ice in the cup. The ice melted and the coffee warmed before I finished it, and I drank it pretty quickly. They need to put slightly more ice in the cups. Lastly, they did not fill the cup to the brim. Considering I am paying $4+ for less than 12 ounces of coffee, the cup should be filled to the top. Especially for cold brew, which is very often not combined with milk. Another minor issue- the cashier stamped my punch card for one coffee even though I bought two. When I asked for the other punch he had a bit of an attitude. However, he did punch the other hole. This is really minor, but does affect the experience. This only happened once though.
Mild tasting espresso which was the first for me— and it’s actually delicious. I wish I tried oat milk to my drink (I got soy). I got a refreshing and light tasting iced mocha. A bit on the pricier side especially with the alternative milk. Staff are friendly and the space was small but clean with a few spots to sit if you wanted to dine in for a bit.
I was happy to discover a new cafe inside Grand Central Terminal. The cappuccino was delicious, and the two employees were very professional and polite. However, it looks like because of the covid19 situation, they are only serving coffee and tea, and no food items, such as pastries. Also, right now, they are completely cashless, so if you go, make sure you bring a credit card or debit card. Maybe the next time I visit they shall have a food item or two.
Don't come here if you're going to order a mocha choca latte with extra foam and some sprinkles on top. That's not what Cafe Grumpy - or any coffee shop that takes it's coffee seriously - is about. The staff are super efficient here, real friendly and engaging - bloody good at their job when it comes to speedy service without slacking on quality. They kept me fuelled for the long days and nights I spent in NYC. I miss them already.
Enjoyed my cappuccino. The restaurant has an adorable theme and interesting culture among the employees that is noticeable as a consumer. There is a small area for seating, which was appropriate for a quick break. Conveniently located in Grand Central, and good deviation from the usual Starbucks without needing to go too far. May come back again while in the area.
A little coffee shop that is at the edge of the Grand Central shops on the first floor. They have some iced teas and lots of coffee. Low ceilings and a few small seats at a bar, and staff was quick and efficient. Just like Starbucks with a less clear menu.
Really amazing coffee here. I haven't been to a coffee spot in NYC where I was disappointed, and Cafe Grumpy is no exception! I love their coffee cups, their design is subtle and cute. I was very tempted to save my cup. The baristas here are very friendly and cheerful people; I enjoyed my visit mainly because of the service!
The coffee at this place is equal to the best you will get anywhere in the world and especially in New York. But be aware for $4.25 plus a tip if you drink it there the coffee is small. As shown in my pic the size was hardly bigger than a demi-tasse size. But the taste could not be faulted.
Their 12 oz iced Americano was just ok - not bold enough for my taste. Same for the latte. The ginger chai latte was not good - it was very watery and lacked in flavor. I also got the blueberry scone which was ok but tastes a bit grainy. Another visit - I tried their cheddar chive biscuit which was just ok. The texture was chewy and had a slight kick to it. They get their pastries from Colson patisserie.
Good but not up to the price: The place is small but easy to navigate as the sitting place is along a glass iverlooking one entrance of Grand Central. The macchiato is strong as it should be but a bit bitter and the milk was added before being “foamed”. The decoration is simple but nice and the music is good
A nice little cafe inside grand Central passageway (accessible from outside too) with a variety of single cup brews. Lots of coffee merchandise on sale, and a bunch of bottled cold brews are also available. It has got a few seats on the side bar if you are planning to hang out for a few minutes.
Weird staff. The barista didn't want to give me milk with the Chai Latte. Said it doesn't work. Never heard that before and I've been to the other location later and there I got it. Coffee and Chai was still good though.
I’ve worked in coffee for years and normally I’m a big fan of Grumpy (hence 3 stars instead of less) but they were uncharacteristically rude at this location. I asked why they were charging me the same for an iced cortado as an iced latte ($6.75 with oat!!!)—despite their hot counterparts having such a large price difference due to the different quantities of milk—and both employees gave me an exceedingly unfriendly retort about the “drink not even being on their menu,” so they were “just charging me for an iced latte and putting in less milk” ….yes, so an iced cortado..
My iced latte had way too much milk and not enough espresso. I was kinda expecting better for such a highly rated NYC coffee place 😅
It is convenient being in Grand Central, and it was empty on the Saturday morning we went there so pretty quick service with some seating looking out to the hall. The staff was definitely not friendly at all but didn't seem awake enough yet to live up to the namesake "grumpy" reputation. The coffee prices are normal and were fine if not particularly notable. Fine place if you are catching a train and need to grab a coffee and run.
Service is usually good but the americanos & drip coffees are not worth the amount they charge. Expresso may be good but for their black coffees are just vile- bitter like a punch in your chest. I’ve had a lot of good coffee from Italy and theirs don’t compare. I don’t see why people line up for this.
The brewed coffee was too strong, too hot, had no specific notes, and was too expensive.
"Café" ??? Meh. --- I typically order an espresso macchiato, which is just espresso with a small amount of milk foam. Today, when I asked for foam only, the barista and the manager told me they don’t make “dry” macchiatos and seemed annoyed by my request. I ended up with just the espresso. Paid $$$ plus a forced tip at the register for what felt like a tiny cup of espresso, which left me disappointed.
Please go here if you want to be ignored... want to wait... and want to have them “forget” your drink. Had this happen several times. Their general manager... who I spoke to on the phone twice... promised me a coupon. Never showed up. “We’ve had some problems with that location” was all he could explain. The place is a dump and many other places eager for your business. Go elsewhere.
I love coffee. So I am always excited to get some iced coffee to jump start my day, unfortunately once I received my iced coffee (I asked for it in mocha flavor) it tasted like chocolate milk. There was no trace of any coffee what's so ever. I am very disappointed. This was my first time coming here and I will not be coming back. Plus the workers were a bit rude to me. The only positive thing about this experience is that they were very efficient in taking orders and having the drinks ready in a short time.
This morning I went to get a drink and a muffin at the Cafe Grumpy in Grand Central. I asked what type of muffin was sitting next to the banana walnut muffin in the display case because it looked like a different flavor. The man at the register became shockingly rude when I asked for clarification a second time because I wanted to make sure we were talking about the same row of muffins as what he was saying wasn’t clear. He was dismissive and obnoxious with absolutely no qualms about his tone. I’m wondering how he gets away with it. Maybe his parents own the location and that’s how his attitude is left unchecked but the experience was so awful and surprising that I was just speechless. He has shoulder length dirty blond hair, glasses, is tall, skinny, and may be in his 20s. I don’t plan to return and do not recommend this location. I cannot believe someone would speak to a customer that way. It was completely unacceptable and all from my asking about the baked products more than once, which makes the whole thing even more disappointing and ridiculous.
2024 October 23 at 10:55am I stopped by after seeing this location on an NYT Cooking video, but I wish I had gone out of my way to Devocion instead. The baristas at this place fit the description of “grumpy” and are quite impatient and, dare I say, unkind. I should've read the reviews beforehand. When you place an order, they will give you a number receipt. Don’t bother listening for the number, though. Right after I moved away from the register, my cold brew came out, and they just repeatedly said “cold brew” instead of the number. I was confused because I had at least eight numbers ahead of me, and my second drink wasn’t ready yet. I only realized it was mine because no one was claiming it. That caused the first unnecessary reaction from the baristas. I waited until they did it again with my second drink, an iced honey latte. Except they kept calling out “iced latte,” and when it wasn’t getting claimed yet again, did I realize it was mine? This time, the barista calling out the drinks raised his voice at me because he could see me looking at him confused once again. When I asked if honey was in it, the other barista yelled "YES" at me. This time, the reaction was bigger and louder, which was pretty nasty behavior from two grown men. This situation could've been avoided if 1. they used the number system that they have and 2. they brought out the drinks at the same time instead of leaving me with a watered-down cold brew while waiting to receive my latte. Oh, and they didn't even remember to add the honey. The latte also tasted very watered-down, and I would've thrown it out if it wasn't for the ridiculous price of subpar coffee. Avoid this place.
Their coffee is always good, the beans are precise. But service is really bad, specially if you come in with cash. I’ve been turned down multiple times because I came with cash. Today I wanted to but 19$ coffee beans and gave them a 100 bill and they told me oh sorry we don’t take 100 bills, and the worst part is that they didn’t care if I bought or not and didn’t offer any solution. This is right for only this shop I hope.
Absolute rip off. Most expensive iced latte I have ever had. The iced latte was extremely milky and when I asked for another shot - which I was in fact happy to pay for - I paid a whole $4,5 more. Perhaps also wrong of me to assume that they wouldn’t charge for a whole other coffee… but thought at least they would consider the fact that I had already paid for a coffee. I really regret even asking for it
Big shoutout to Cafe Grumpy and their magic cups and lids! I never knew how much I needed my coffee to sputter out at different locations and lucky me, this isn’t the first time I’ve been graced with such an experience. Whichever supplier they changed to over the past year should be commended. When you spend over $4.50 for a black coffee, you should have to luxury of drinking it from multiple exit points; talk about ease at its finest! I’m sorry but I had to rush over to Zaro’s to pick up a new cup to hold this one! I’m not in it for the flash and pomp of such a special cup with so many spouts! But hey, I managed to land a 2 for 1 coffee for my crowded train ride! The day is mine! ⭐️
Had some time before my train. When I ordered, 2 people were in front of me and no one else there. Waited for 20 mins and had to leave before I got my coffee. Very disappointed
I ordered an iced latte expecting a freshly made drink, but the barista simply poured it straight from a carton... no espresso, no effort. It felt more like a pre-made bottled coffee than an actual latte. Definitely disappointed with the quality and won’t be coming back. They also said they didn't know how to make a lavender latte for another customer.
First time visiting from the uk and now I understand the name and ethos of the brand. The staff were all grumpy and rude, the lady didn’t put the lid on my coffee properly and my $8 coffee split all over my hand burning me. When I asked for a napkin I was told they’re over there. Wouldn’t go back, poor experience and a mediocre coffee.
