Opinions de Gen Brooklyn
This is a wonderful local "hole in the wall" with amazing sashimi and an expansive sake selection. They even fly in sake reps from Japan to give taste tests. They even have actual wasabi not the horse radish and mustard paste that often gets passed off and 99% of sushi spots.
Gen never stop surprising us with their consistency with amazing quality of foods and unique sake collections! Aside their carefully curated foods, You have to try ‘special flight’ from sake artisans/masters from Japan.
The most amazing sushi I have ever had in NYC. Gen gets packed fast so go early and order fast before the kitchen gets baked up. Now if only they had temari sushi then this place would be heaven.
This is my favourite sushi restaurant in Brooklyn. I have been there thousands of times and it only gets better and better. I really recommend chef’s recommendations and signature sushi rolls as well as the octopus and the tofu starters
Delicious sushi. Fish was buttery and just what you want. Walked over and picked up to go and the sushi was good after a 15 min walk back to my house. Definitely my favorite sushi in the area.
Gen is a special neighborhood place with a warm and creative vibe. Some more experienced companions have told me the food is more authentic japanese. In cold weather I often get the Nabe, which is a soup stew with salmon, oysters and cabbage. I always order the Abstract Garden appetizer, which comprises three things of the chef's choosing and is generally awesome, usually including a great ceviche in warmer weather months. The sushi is delicious. They often do interesting varieties, including uni or monk fish liver.
One of our local faves. I don't usually get the sushi, but the hot food menu is excellent. Great for small groups.
Amazing food, vibes and service. We got the Otoro Aburi special and it was incredible!
Great atmosphere and sake. The manager provided amazing sake recommendations and ensured we enjoyed our meal. Highly recommended!
Incredibly fresh and high quality raw fish dishes. I only wish that they offer their omakase sashimi and sushi entrees during lunch. They have a very limited lunch menu on the weekends.
Super cute spot! First off, the food is incredible and the music was good which added to the overall very chill vibe. Service was really great as well. Will definitely be coming back
Best Japanese Izakaya in NY. Foods are awesome. They don’t have any hard liquor but sake selection are awesome. I strongly recommend you WHAT THE JAPANESE IZAKAYA IS.
Wow, I had been wanting to try this place for ages. If I knew it was this amazing I would have gone ages ago. I've only been twice so I haven't gotten to everything on the menu but trust me I will. Everything has been so delicious.
This is a very special resturant. I Love this place. Supurb sake list. Very tasty, well prepared food with unique special touch. I saw another reviewer complaining about the chicken teriyaki they ordered. Seriouly?
Gen is my only claimable regular-ish spot, because they actually make it delicious AND affordable! 30 dollar seven-piece omakase? Fresh fish that never misses?? Perfect low key vibe for a weeknight relaxed meal or solo at the counter. service is always friendly. Love pulling up to this spot and highly advocate for it so it thrives as it deserves.
Fantastic and fresh fish. I had chirashi and it was absolutely great. A wide variety of fish and roe placed atop delicious Sushi rice. Shared an appetizer called 'secret garden' which is the chef's choice of appetizer. We got some wonderful treats that were all delicious. Also had edamame (I know) which was also very fresh and cooked well, not overcooked. Would highly recommend especially if you're in the area and in the mood for some good fresh fish.
Excellent food - we've been coming here for around 20 years.
We went here and had a really lovely time sitting at the Sushi bar. The staff is hip, snappy, and really friendly. Nice neighborhood spot that was bustling and small and quaint. Really clean fish, the Agadashi tofu was delicious, and had a few rolls and other appetizers. I’ve been to most places around the FT Greene cobble bill P heights Clinton Hill area, and this is one of the better ones!
I've had consistently good rolls, sushi, sashimi, and apps from this place via delivery. Delivery sushi almost always falls a bit flat regardless where I get it, but this place is phenomenal every time. Eventually I will have have to go in person because if the delivery is this good then in person has to be even better
Great restaurant. I've been going here for years and at least twice a week with no regrets. Hibachi dishes, sushi platters, the food is so tasty, filling, and refreshing. The people there are also very nice and have a good sense of humor and down-to-earth nature. Overall, I find this place very pleasant to dine at.
Amazing. Creative and delicious sushi rolls & salad, great sake list (waiter was helpful with recommendations and served the sake at two temperatures so we could taste the subtle difference), attentive and charming staff, and the new back patio area was so pleasant. Decor is modern but has the feel of an old-fashioned paper-wall dining room. I've been craving that sushi ever since.
Favorite neighborhood Japanese place. Good food, good service, took care of my dietary restrictions without a problem. Will definitely come again soon!
Very authentic atmosphere, amazing and friendly service. The food was fresh and a cut above what you find at most Japanese restaurants. For example the seaweed salad incredible, combining very delicate marine plants with a light and delicious dressing.
Intimate sushi spot that's worth the wait (we snuck in right before the Saturday evening rush and got a spot at the bar). Some of the best sushi I've had in the city with some great choices available for the more daring diner. I was amazed with the monkfish roe wrapped in shiso and my partner's monkfish liver was right up her alley. The less adventurous will enjoy their fine tuna selection and unique takes on familiar rolls. Total bill for the two of us with three beers, two appetizers and two levels of omakase was around $180 before tip, so this may be best for a special occasion, but we felt it was very much worth it.
Delicious, fresh Japanese food My significant other and I shared a special chef appetizer called Absurd Garden. We both had soup! Heck yes! Good quality ingredients, and a great place for date night.
Definitely one of the best restaurants in the neighborhood! The sushi is great without being super pricy, and there's a wide variety of other interesting stuff on the menu, too, including a few seasonal specials.
I’m lucky that Gen is on my doorstep, but if it wasn’t I’d probably traverse the city to eat here. The vibe is awesome and the staff friendly, but go for the excellent, authentic dishes. The owner, who crafted the wood interior by hand, recently celebrated 12 years in business (pre-gentrification) so here’s to 12 more.
It's been years and instead of it getting boring with time or else, it's become a favorite and a place we reserve for that special pick-me-up kind of night. Usually some great tunes to pair with some great food, just what we need when you're feelin for some comforting Japanese foods.
Ive been coming here since they first opened in the early 2000s when I was in my early 20s. Much of the neighborhood has changed since then, but Gen hasnt. The food and attention to detail is super high quality, and the price reasonable. Now we bring our children here, the next GEN-eration, and they love it as much as we do. Thank you, Gen!
Gen has been serving the best sushi since forever. It's a great neighborhood place but it's also better than a neighborhood place. I'm so glad it's hung around -- their fish is so fresh, even their most basic rolls feel stand-out. Go Gen go!
This is ThePandaPhotographer This is one of my best and top choices to visit and eat in NYC. I was just visiting there for an event they were having and my Japanese friends were also intending this event. The food and sake are always so good. My friend Dj Tek knows that Gen is one top choice and when he told me about an event, I made a decision to shoot. No one pays for me to shoot for the photos. These are my personal work for editorial usages or if the owner in the future will like to have them. But the food, oh my panda is so good " love the way they make the agedashi tofu. Tues is bottle less sake and I might go tonight for one last visit
An old standby that is absolutely one of the best sushi restaurants in the neighborhood! Unbelievable and *affordable* omakase, low key some of the best ramen in BK, wonderful daily specials. Staff is incredibly nice. Don’t miss!
Gen is my favorite restaurant in the neighborhood. The omakase is great and the fish they include with it is always changing. The waiters are very knowledgeable and friendly. In particular the young Asian waiter (Daniel?) is very good!
My favorite! Ayako is a gem and everything we have ordered there is top notch, authentic, fresh. Highly recommend the tempura udon and the agedashi tofu especially.
Incredible long-lived gem of the neighborhood. We eat here more often than our budget would like- Gen has become our default treat after a rough day. Omekase is casual style; all the servings on a board at once rather than course by course, which allows for a more idiosyncratic exploration of the menu. Ala carte offers lots of solid choices- the hamachi, saba, and toro here are notable in their consistent distinct quality. Seaweed salad is rustic and a must have start to any dinner, agedashi tofu is superb and the house dashi is 💯, I always ask for more. Sake menu is solid, we tend to default to the Narutotai but there’s lots to love across the list. Service is mixed, seems to be a good bit of FOH turnover so hard to find servers that are fully seasoned with the menus and overall fine dining schema, but the vibe is always good regardless and the prices are from 2018 (pls don’t raise them lol) 10/10 PH/CH banger 🔥
Love this spot so much. The sake is fantastic. The fish is incredible. Me and my partner have started coming here once a week because we just can't get enough. I'll jokingly say "well, maybe we should go to Gen" and then we both know it is going to happen because we are so thrilled. Get the "on draft" sake. The sake toro is incredible. Agedashi tofu is unmatched. Underpriced for the quality.
This is hands down one of my favorite Japanese restaurants in NYC (which I'm biased because I live very near by). Everything I've eaten here has been excellent, and all of the sushi/sashimi is reasonably priced for what you're getting. I think I've been here about 8 times so far over the last 2 years, and it's always been a good meal.
It was my first time at Gen and it will not be the last. The customer service was amazing everyone was very welcoming and the food was delicious. I had the nabeyaki udon and my partner had the curry chicken cutlet these two dishes will not disappoint you!
We were warmly greeted. Our waiter was nice and explained the menu to my son who is autistic. Everything was fresh and delicious! The music was a nice touch as well. We enjoyed ourselves. My son gives it a 10 out of 10.
Fantastic experience all around. Very clean and cozy place. The servers were friendly and attentive. The fresh mint infused water was a very nice touch. The traditional Japanese breakfast is a must try! The salmon was incredible and perfectly cooked. Their tempura was just about perfect! Very satisfying and will definitely be coming back!
The best Japanese restaurant in Brooklyn! I mean it! Besides the lovely and fun interior and the kind and friendly staff, the food is really special. They have the usual sushi rolls and dishes, which are much fresher and tastier than you'll find at an average spot, and they also have a lot of unique dishes that aren't outlandish but are remarkably good. The best thing is that the special menu changes every day, so a regular like me always has something new to try. The rotating menu has a lot of great cooked fish, vegetables, soups, and marinated or pickled foods. Don't miss the saku saku roll or the Asian broccoli. (And, especially if you order from the standard sushi menu, it's very affordable.) There's also a huge sake selection and they're knowledgeable about what sake to order.
Been coming here for 6 years. Consistently excellent. Really nice service, very fresh fish, cute but chill atmosphere. Secretly some of the best ramen in the neighborhood. A lot of staff, especially kitchen, have been there for years, which means they probably treat their employees well. Japanese breakfast, bento lunch, omakase dinner - I’ve tried it all. I’ve been lucky enough to visit Japan several times and this place would be successful in Tokyo. We’re lucky to have it in Prospect Heights.
I truly love Gen and it is such a neighborhood staple for us! We bring everyone that visits us here to enjoy their fresh sushi and appetizers. That being said - I very very very much miss the mushroom curry that was taken off the menu :( the vegetable curry is good but the mushroom curry is something that I still dream about constantly and was devastated when it was removed! Again we love Gen and would highly recommend to anyone!
I’m very pleased with the inventive new menu at Gen! The smaller dishes — you could call them Japanese tapas — are creative and delicious. The Mini Ochazuke bowl features small pieces of sushi fish over rice and is a great value. The Crab Bomber is a delightful pairing of warm, crunchy rice and the rich taste of crab. Another standout is the Seafood Salad — a fresh mix of sushi and greens with a Japanese toasted sesame vinaigrette that complements the fish perfectly. Usually, I reach for soy sauce, but this was a refreshing twist on an old favorite.
My wife and I have lived in the neighborhood for years and this was our first time trying Gen. We had a wonderful time. The karage was amazing and the sushi was so fresh. Best part? We asked to take some of our mains home with us, we open the bag and there’s a surprise can of the Sake we ordered during our meal. Incredible experience, incredible staff. Can’t wait to come back for some more delicious Japanese food. gochisousama deshita!
Super fun, small authentic Japanese place. Tons of options. I had the vegetarian dashi with udon and the vegetable tempura roll. When I say the soup was full bodied and the tempura had such a strong umami flavor I cannot emphasize how uniquely well done these basics were. The service was Lightning fast, and the servers were so good humored and accommodating. I asked for a dark beer and they recommended a beer described as chocolatey that was so perfectly what I wanted. I also had the green tea iced cream which was light and not bitter. We went in without a reservation but the staff let us have a table as soon as one opened up. We stayed slightly past closing, but didn’t feel rushed and absolutely enjoyed hearing the staff enjoying each others company. Seems like they are passionate about this place. Pictured: the udon I absolutely destroyed, the beer I had and the green tea ice cream.
We are so in love with Gen we have to stop ourselves from going every night. It is the coziest place with some of the most flavorful food I’ve ever had. The uni don (eel) is mouthwatering, spectacular, and we get it every time. The rolls are hearty and well-priced, and the small omakase is lovely too. Our server is fantastic (I think her name is Yuki, apologies if not), she helped us navigate the drinks menu and was so kind. I loved the “marshmallow notes” sake, we loved the ale too. One of the best places in Brooklyn.
Incredible fresh fish! We ordered the Omakase and it did not disappoint. Every fish was yummy. We also had miso and edamame as starters. Their sale selection excellent as well. The ambiance is very cute and intimate. Great service! We had an excellent experience overall. Perfect for a date or small group.
Probably the best sushi in the neighborhood, although Silver Rice is awesome; Gen does a different thing though, with lots of daily specials, inventive combos, and fresh chef touches. Good sake and beer menu. Weathered outside begets cozy and intimate seating inside - interesting corner space. For its small size, punches way above its weight. Nice service. Good value with price options for all kinds of folks. Tasty. Gets crowded on peak times on weekends.
This was our first time here, waiter was very attentive, friendly and thoughtful. They have weekend lunch special and Tuesday happy hour bottomless sake for $25. We ordered udon, sushi omasake, ramen from lunch special menu. But the dishes on their regular menu seem more home cooking and not greasy at all. Waiter gave us free gobo dish because the fried chicken was taking a bit longer to cook. Cozy down to earth food and authentic as well. Definitely would come back again. They also have Sake tasting on weekdays.
Excellent gyōza soup. Extensive sake selection. Nice selection of sushi and Japanese main courses.
Many good and some great dishes at this true Japanese restaurant. Good service and reasonable prices make this a must go to place in Prospect Heights.
Excellent sake list with helpful, informative servers, 9 Japanese craft beers on tap, good fresh seafood, and very warm service. Low key gem, much better than so many other Japanese neighborhood spots, and the music is good too. Make sure you're clear with your order, there was some confusion about ours, but everything was very delicious regardless.
I stopped by here for dinner late in the evening and was surprised to find that it was pretty packed (but that's probably just due to limited table space). I ordered a normal spicy salmon roll and a special roll and discovered that the salmon roll was tiny, but the special roll made up for it. The service was slow but you could see they were pretty busy and possibly understaffed. Overall the meal was enjoyable, but I just wish service was a bit better. I see myself coming back though, so I guess what counts.
When I get sushi at a moderately to cheaply priced establishment, I am usually all about value. Give me lots of delicious fish for not so much money, and you have a friend in me. However Gen is in an interesting place where they substitute some value for creativity. The creativity is what will bump this up from three to four stars. Right now the value part of my brain keeps sending me red signals. You had to order food after eating the omakase the last time you were there! Remember that time when you needed extra rice to go with the curry roll? This rating is wrong!!! Settle down value brain. If Gen were the kind of place that just served up a couple rolls with the standard dozen types of fish, charged more because it's not a take out joint, you'd be right. But sometimes, something different is required. I like that Gen does specials that change and are interesting. I like that there is a dinner vibe at 9:45 PM on a Sunday. I like that its an enjoyable experience that makes me look forward to going back. I like all of it enough to get that fourth star.
I did enjoy my food. I'm going to give it 4 💫 Service. I'm going to give it 4/1 stars 💫 The environment was clean and felt comfortable. That gets another 4 stars. I think that would come there to eat whenever I'm in the neighborhood. Their menu is quite large.
Very carefully made food served in cautious manner and perfect sequence. They show a respect for the food they make. The only problem is that the music here is not consistent. Random Latin American-ish pop music simply does not match with the dishes or sake. This really destroys the experience of dinning here.
Food is soooo good ♥️ in love with their Matcha IPA
When It comes to this place, I would stick to the hand rolls. I can’t speak on the meany other cuisines this place offers, but I can’t speak say that out of the sushi I would avoid sashimi or raw fish. I had three of the specialty rolls, one tuna, one salmon and shrimp, and one eel and shrimp tempura. The tuna was boring and flavorless, the salmon and shrimp was pretty good and the shrimp tempura was fantastic. The sashimi was flavorless. Stay away from the iced teas or smoothies. I made the mistake of ordering the Thai Iced tea. This restaurant was pretty good though I ate those handrolls UPPPP. Great deals.
A standout Japanese restaurant in Prospect Heights. Chicken katsu dinner hits the spot. Takoyaki appetizer and shrimp tempura udon are also done right. Presentation is top notch but nothing to knock your socks off, which is why this place is deserving of their rating. Still no substitute for Manhattan.
This place is like you are home, waitress is nice but their plates are not that clean and everything looks old, but they have fresh mashed wasabi, traditional ingredients that you hardly find from other restaurants. You should always try their $18 traditional breakfast set. It's really good!!
To sum up: over priced, unpleasant fishy tempura dipping sauce, shameful labeling of the omakase that just isn't, over salted katsu and salty curry to make it worse, plus the inattentive & careless servers who won't clean up the table with needless dishes. Note, when a diner says he's done with the food yet the plate is full, at least take it away immediately.
Came here based on good reviews after visiting the Brooklyn Museum and very much regret it; could have gotten a way more satisfying meal with much less. Paid $60+ for a bowl of udon with two pieces of shrimp tempuras in it and four pieces of sushi. The udon tasted like something we could make at home with udon sauce and frozen udon. The one piece of toro sushi was good; nothing impressive beyond that. Service was also very cold and slow; staff were mostly chatting amongst themselves. Read the reviews again (filtered them from lowest ratings to highest this time), and have to say that I agree with the negative reviews that this place is overpriced.
I've been really excited to try this place, but unfortunately this experience was overall quite disappointing. Starting off, we went on a Thursday evening, and the restaurant was empty. Nevertheless, it took us forever to get our entrees, though our appetizers came out more or less within a reasonable timeframe. Our server was personable enough, but disappeared for like 40 minutes while we were waiting for our entree and i ended up having to find them to get the check at the end as well. That's whatever, I work food service so I know that's how it goes sometimes, but I would have at least appreciated a checkin about the status of our food because my date and I were about to ask the kitchen to cancel our order by the time it finally arrived. Again, its not the end of world, and if had been busy, I would have understood, but that wasn't the case at all. The most disappointing thing about this meal was ultimately the meal itself. We started off with a salmon belly avocado roll (I can't remember the name of the roll and their website is down). It was mostly rice, and the rice was noticeably unpleasant and unbalanced in flavor, being aggressively sour. The salmon itself was just as lackluster and the avocado was on the underripe side. I wouldn't complain about this if it was like a 15 or even a 17$ roll, but this was 22$, and I've had grocery store rolls that were on par with it. We also tried the hijiki tempura, which was fortunately reasonably priced at $7, but the tempura overwhelmed the flavor of the seaweed completely. It really just tasted like used fryer oil, evoking all too vividly the flavor of country fair funnel cake. I got the ramen, and I was underwhelmed. There were a decent amount of toppings, which is were a lot of ramen spots fall short, but the chashu pork belly was ice cold. I understand that is something prepped in advance then reheated by the individual serving, so there wasn't any danger of food poisoning or anything like that, but it detracted heavily from the dish. I would have asked our server to heat it up, but they were nowhere to be found as mentioned previously. The broth was also noticeably bad, lacking any sort of richness or depth, and tasting strongly of bouillon powder, which I can only imagine they used instead of the more expensive dashi stock. Again, I wouldn't be writing this if the prices were a bit more reasonable, but don't charge luxury prices and offer mediocre food. My date's soba was also underwhelming. The dipping sauce was unbalanced, lacking depth and richness, while being overly salty, and the tempura toppings were oil-logged like the hijiki. The presentation was nice, but was not enough to make up for the meager portion of condiments. Daikon radish is dirt cheap, you can served more than a teaspoon with a $22 plate of plain noodles. Overall, this was a very disappointing experience. The restaurant is beautiful, and years of good reviews lead me to believe this is a recent, and hopefully correctable, trend of mediocre food and poor service. I'm sure that number of our issues with the food could have been alleviated if our server had checked in, and I wouldn't have minded the absentee server if they had offered up an acknowledgement of the long wait times, if there had been more than 10 people total in the restaurant, or if the food was anywhere near the quality that the pricepoint would suggest. Our tab was just shy of $100 after tip for 2 people not drinking. Next time, we'll take that money to Geido down the street.
The food is so amazing. The location interiors are so astonishing. The only thing that my friends and I don't like is that the Japanese server lady is taking too long to take orders from us. And we can hear the lady arguing with other servers. It is disturbing, although the food is delicious.
This experience would have been a 1 star except the staff was great. There was nothing wrong with the service. We were excited to try this place, but we were extremely disappointed. The food was inedible. The soy ginger fried chicken appetizer was incredibly dry and came with no sauce. We ordered several rolls including a special roll and they were all sub par. There was too much rice and the fish tasted fishy and chewy. We had to send it back, which is something I’ve never done, because it was inedible and we did not want to eat it.
We ate at Gen about two years ago and it was just ok. Since we moved to the neighborhood recently we thought we’d give it another shot, and we were even more disappointed. I would love to give Gen the benefit of the doubt and assume that they were just having an off night but not sure I can stomach it. First of all, the Miso soup was obviously instant soup and not even a good version. We ordered 5 rolls and they ranged from flavorless (snow crab California) to sloppily cut (hamachi scallion) to insanely salty (Ume Shisho) to incredibly “meh” (Saba Gari). So surprised it gets such good reviews - what am I missing?
We bought to take away and the tuna was bad . When we asked for a refund they us that they do not give it because the tuna is in good condition, but it smelled terrible, it felt dull and the color was dark. We will put the formal complaint with health because they do not care. this place is disgusting
My friend and I went here and saw unbelievably terrible service. The waiters here wasn’t friendly at all(No smile)and the food was terrible. We didn’t wanted to pay even 1cent here. We’ve never had service so bad will never go this place again and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.
Ordered on GrubHub and was disappointed when Gen gave our order to the wrong delivery person. Lady on the phone was rude and said there was nothing she could do about it. Asked them to make a new order and they refused to do so. Customer service here is terrible. Can’t rate the food because they never ended up delivering to us. Do not order from here.
COMPLETELY IGNORED… after being sat right after white family the restaurant and they completely ignored us . The family before us already got their drinks and sushi while they didn’t check in with us at all. A white couple was sat 10 minutes after we were and within 5 minutes they’re orders were being taken. All three wait staff members passed us and said absolutely nothing. Don’t come here if you’re black.
Food was good and service was good but we decided to leave in the middle of our meal due to the terrible attitude of the manager. We found one dish too sweet for our tastes and simply asked to exchange the dish. Upon hearing this request the manager practically berated us for considering doing such a thing. According to him no restaurant ever does this and he has worked at many "very fancy restaurants." Even if the request was to be denied, it does not justify the behavior of the manager. Ultimately this left a sour taste in our mouths and we will never return, despite enjoying our experience up to this point. Also the music was just terrible at some points.
I overheard a conversation between a waitress and what seemed like the manager in which the waitress was saying that there was a male staffmember who was harassing the female staff (asking them to sit on his lap) and things like that. The manager was ignoring her, and she was expressing that girls kept quitting, and would continue to quit, until this one replaceable man was fired. The manager was not taking her complaint seriously at all, and I felt so sad for her and the other women that work here. I would not have come to eat here if I knew that management allowed this kind of work culture, and I will not come to eat here again, I will also tell my friends and family not to eat here. Shame.
I ordered on a rainy Saturday night. A Sashimi platter, salmon roll & seaweed salad..... what I revived for $40 (after tip) was an insult. I called to get a refund and they wanted to give me store credit & not return my cash. Not only were they curt but tried to justify the mess they sent me. I’m extremely upset and now 10x hungrier. I’m beyond pissed.
I've been going here for years, and I ordered for four people (delivery). The food was horrible, the chicken for example was dry and tasteless, go to KFC instead. Rice was flavorless too. The sauce was in micro container with perhaps a teaspoon of sauce and again tasteless. Everyone else's food was awful. We ended up throwing it in the garbage and ordered somewhere else. Four people, 180$. Stay away.
We've been going to Gen for years. I guess recently the ownership or management have changed as apparently has the entire staff. Gen was previously a 5 star neighborhood sushi restaurant. The staff were incredibly friendly and professional, the service was unobtrusive but attentive and the food was consistently excellent. That no longer appears to be the case. The food is still fine, lacking something, but the atmosphere is completely different now. The lights are too bright - with mismatched color temperatures, the music is too loud, the staff are friendly but unprofessional. Somehow despite there being more people working in the restaurant than I've ever seen it took longer for anything to get done. The vibe is gone. It's a real shame. Gen was incredible and now it feels like an episode of Kitchen Nightmares.
As a previous comment was stated about how the manager did nothing after an employee expressed she was being harassed by a coworker. I had to share on here that this isn’t a one time thing. I’ve come here a few times and noticed that the management here is horrible and disgusting. I overheard a manager firing his employee because of her race!!!! That poor girl has served me most of the times I’ve came into the restaurant and she did a great job and always made me and my friends laugh. A few months ago this restaurant looked very diverse and cheerful, and the ladies that served were so sweet and helpful. I guess a new staff has been hired and let me just say, it’s anything but diverse. You can tell that the new employees have no experience and are very blank and quiet. Whoever is in charge here needs to take a hard look around. I do not support racism and I will not be coming back here.
I ordered a few rolls and a platter and I wish I hadn’t bothered. The sushi came out late even though the place was practically empty at 6:15 pm and the rolls were poorly made (cut to uneven sizes, avocado inside was black, rice crumbling apart). The yellowtail was very slimy. Waitress did not seem to know much about their sake menu and could not answer a basic question. A hot mess.
My allergies were not taken seriously. Staff knowingly watch me eat a meal that was contaminated with my indicated allergy. I alerted them when ordering. The waitress acknowledged and even circled back if it’s ok my partner had that ingredient - how nice. However, my meal still came out with the ingredient I’m allergic to. I politely asked if this was a mistake and they apologized asking if I wanted it simply removed or remade - I said remade. This is where it gets infuriating: Instead of actually remaking it because it’s close to closing time; they just removed the allergen and put the remaining food onto a new plate with something to replace the allergen. And kept it in the back for however long to seem like they were remaking it.. Replating is not remaking it. After had eaten a small portion of the meal, I confronted them that it’s not actually remade. They admitted to it with whatever they felt was their justification - time, ingredients, efforts, etc. etc… it was just the gen don - rice, sashimi, and tempura. At my own judgment, I still picked at it, I didn’t finish the meal. Hoped for the best. Was able to walk out fine and still polite but later increasingly felt the effects. I can forgive unintentional accidents - although it shouldn’t happen in the food industry with allergens. But what really is unacceptable and dangerous is that they literally watched me be poisoned to cover their mistake. Also, the sashimi isn’t fresh.
